We study inhomogeneous one-dimensional Hubbard systems using the density matrix renormalization group method. Different heterostructures are investigated whose configuration is modeled varying parameters like the on-site Coulomb potential and introducing local confining potentials. We investigate their Luttinger liquid properties through the parameter K_rho, which characterizes the decay of the density-density correlation function at large distances. Our main goal is the investigation of possible realization of engineered materials and the ability to manipulate physical properties by choosing an appropriate spatial and/or chemical modulation.
We present a theory for charge and heat transport parallel to the interfaces of a multilayer (ML) in which the interfacing gives rise the redistribution of the electronic charges. The ensuing electrical field couples self-consistently to the itinerant electrons, so that the properties of the ML crucially depend on an interplay between the on-site Coulomb forces and the long range electrostatic forces. The ML is described by the Falicov-Kimball model and the self-consistent solution is obtained by iterating simultaneously the DMFT and the Poisson equations. This yields the reconstructed charge …
Complex oxides exhibit many intriguing phenomena, including metal-insulator transition, ferroelectricity/multiferroicity, colossal magnetoresistance and high transition temperature superconductivity. Advances in epitaxial thin film growth techniques enable us to combine different complex oxides with atomic precision and form an oxide heterostructure. Recent theoretical and experimental work has shown that charge transfer across oxide interfaces generally occurs and leads to a great diversity of emergent interfacial properties which are not exhibited by bulk constituents. In this report, we rev…
We propose an effective model called the "charge model", for the half-filled one-dimensional Hubbard and extended Hubbard models. In this model, spin-charge separation, which has been justified from an infinite on-site repulsion ($U$) in the strict sense, is compatible with charge fluctuations. Our analyses based on the many-body Wannier functions succeeded in determining the optical conductivity spectra in large systems. The obtained spectra reproduce the spectra for the original models well even in the intermediate $U$ region of $U=5-10T$, with $T$ being the nearest-neighbor electron hopping…
Using the strong coupling diagram technique for calculating the electron Green's function of the two-dimensional Hubbard model we have summed infinite sequences of ladder diagrams, which describe interactions of electrons with spin and charge fluctuations. For sufficiently low temperatures and doping a pronounced four-band structure is observed in spectral functions. Its appearance is related to the proximity of the transition to the long-range antiferromagnetic order.
We investigate the competition between charge-density-wave (CDW) states and a Coulomb interaction-driven topological Mott insulator (TMI) in the honeycomb extended Hubbard model. For the spinful model with on-site ($U$) and next-nearest-neighbor ($V_2$) Coulomb interactions at half filling, we find two peculiar six-sublattice charge-density-wave insulating states by using variational Monte Carlo simulations as well as the Hartree-Fock approximation. We observe that conventional ordered states always win with respect to the TMI. The ground state is given in the large-$V_2$ region by a CDW chara…
Determining the nature of band gaps in transition-metal compounds remains challenging. We present a first-principles study on electronic and optical properties of CoO using hybrid functional pseudopotentials. We show that optical absorption spectrum can provide a clear fingerprint to distinguish between Mott-Hubbard, intermediate and charge-transfer insulators. This discrimination is reflected by the qualitative difference in peak satellites due to unique interplay between $d$-$d$ and $p$-$d$ excitations, thus allowing identification from experimental data alone, unlike the existing methods th…
We investigate charge fluctuations in the two-dimensional Hubbard model as a function of doping, interaction strength, next-nearest-neighbor hopping, and temperature within the eight-site dynamical cluster approximation. In the regime of intermediate interaction strengths, we find that $d$ density wave fluctuations, which had previously been postulated using analytical arguments, are present and strong but cannot be interpreted as the cause of the pseudogap in the model, due to their evolution with doping and interaction strength. For all parameters away from half filling, the charge fluctuati…
We compute the dynamical charge susceptibility in the two-dimensional Hubbard model within the dynamical cluster approximation. In order to understand the connection between charge susceptibility and pseudogap, we investigate the momentum, doping, and temperature dependence. We find that as a function of frequency, the dynamical charge susceptibility is well represented by a single peak at a characteristic frequency. It shows little momentum or temperature dependence, while the doping dependence is more evident, and no clear signature of the pseudogap is observed. Data for the doping evolution…
We study the extended Hubbard model away from half-filling on a two-dimensional square lattice using cluster dynamical mean field theory on clusters of size $8$. We show that the model exhibits metallic, compressible charge ordered, and insulating charge ordered phases. We determine the location of the charge ordering phase transition line at finite temperature and the properties of the phases as a function of doping, temperature, local interaction, and nearest neighbor interaction. An analysis of the energetics of the charge order transition shows that the charge ordering transition mainly re…
We report a large-scale density-matrix renormalization group study of the lightly doped Hubbard model on 4-leg cylinders at hole doping concentration $δ=12.5\%$. By keeping a large number of states for long system sizes, we are able to reveal a delicate interplay between superconductivity and charge and spin density wave orders tunable via next-nearest neighbor hopping t'. For finite t', the ground state is consistent with that of a Luther-Emery liquid, having `half-filled' charge stripes with power-law superconducting and charge-density-wave correlations of wave-length $λ=1/2δ$, but short-ran…
We study the extended Hubbard model on a two-dimensional half-filled square lattice using the dynamical cluster approximation. We present results on the phase boundaries between the paramagnetic metallic (normal) state and the insulating antiferromagnetic state, as well as between the antiferromagnetic and charge order states. We find hysteresis along the antiferromagnet/charge order and normal/charge order phase boundaries (at larger values of the on-site interaction), indicating first order phase transitions. We show that nearest neighbor interactions lower the critical temperature for the a…
The time evolution properties of charge current for the one-dimensional Hubbard model in an electric field have been studied in a rigorous manner. We find that there is a complete and orthonormal set of time-evolution states for which the charge current can only keep zero or oscillate constantly, differing from the possible picture of damped or over-damped Bloch oscillations due to strong correlations. It is also found that, associated with these states, there is a set of constant phase factors, which are uniquely determined and are very useful on discussing the long-time evolution behaviors o…
We report a study of electronic transport in van der Waals heterostructures composed of flakes of the antiferromagnetic Mott insulator a-RuCl_3 placed on top of monolayer graphene Hall bars. While the zero-field transport shows a strong resemblance to that of isolated graphene, we find a consistently $p$-type Hall effect suggestive of multiband conduction, along with a non-monotonic and gate-voltage-dependent excursion of the resistivity at low temperatures that is reminiscent of transport in the presence of a magnetic phase transition. We interpret these data as evidence for charge transfer f…
The Kotliar and Ruckenstein slave-boson representation of the Hubbard model allows to obtain an approximation of the charge dynamical response function resulting from the Gaussian fluctuations around the paramagnetic saddle-point in analytical form. Numerical evaluation in the thermodynamical limit yields charge excitation spectra consisting of a continuum, a gapless collective mode with anisotropic zero-sound velocity, and a correlation induced high-frequency mode at $ω\approx U$. In this work we show that this analytical expression obeys the particle-hole symmetry of the model on any biparti…
Size dependent electric voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy in multiferroic heterostructures: Interface-charge and strain co-mediated magnetoelectric coupling
Utilizing the Fermi gas microscope, recently the MIT group has measured the spin transport of the Fermi Hubbard model starting from a spin-density-wave state, and the Princeton group has measured the charge transport of the Fermi Hubbard model starting from a charge-density-wave state. Motivated by these two experiments, we prove a theorem that shows under certain conditions, the spin and charge transports can be equivalent to each other. The proof makes use of the particle-hole transformation of the Fermi Hubbard model and a recently discovered symmetry protected dynamical symmetry. Our resul…
