The divergence of the photon self - energy diagram in spinor quantum electrodynamics in $(2+1)$ dimensional space time- $(QED_3)$ is studied by the Pauli - Villars regularization and dimensional regularization. Results obtained by two different methods are coincided if the gauge invariant of theory is considered carefully step by step in these calculations.
The need for a cutoff in the Lamb shift calculation suggests that high-energy virtual photons do not interact with real particles. In this paper, we assume that the creation of high-energy virtual particles is suppressed by a Boltzmann factor. As a result, the Coulomb potential is modified, and the zero-point energy density and one-particle-irreducible self-energy of the scalar field are finite.
The pressure of a system in thermal equilibrium is expressed as a mass integral over a sum of thermal propagators. This allows a Dyson resummation and is used to demonstrate that potential infrared divergences are rendered harmless.
In non-supersymmetric covariant quantum gravity theory, for each system of gravity coupled with single field is one-loop divergent. Since adding other fields or other interactions to each system generates more possible counter-Lagrangian terms, there is room for improvement to restore renormalizability. In this paper, we consider Einstein-Maxwell fields coupled with electrically charged scalar which is the simplest model among the systems of gravity coupled with multiple fields having their own interaction. First, we introduce how to calculate the possible one-loop diagrams in Einstein-SQED sy…
We consider a model of quantum electrodynamics (QED) on a graph. The one-loop divergences in the model are investigated by use of the background field method.
We study quantum electrodynamics on the noncommutative Minkowski space in the Yang-Feldman formalism. Local observables are defined by using covariant coordinates. We compute the two-point function of the interacting field strength to second order and find the infrared divergent terms already known from computations using the so-called modified Feynman rules. It is shown that these lead to nonlocal renormalization ambiguities. Also new nonlocal divergences stemming from the covariant coordinates are found. Furthermore, we study the supersymmetric extension of the model. For this, the supersymm…
This paper studies the model of the quantum electrodynamics (QED) of a single nonrelativistic electron due to W. Pauli and M. Fierz and studied further by P. Blanchard. This model exhibits infrared divergence in a very simple context. The infrared divergence is associated with the inequivalence of the Hilbert spaces associated with the free Hamiltonian and with the complete Hamiltonian. Infrared divergences that are visible in the perturbative description disappear in the space of the clothed electrons. In this model when the Hamiltonian is expressed in terms of the ``physical'' fields that cr…
The reformulation of field theory in which self-energy processes are no longer present [Annals of Physics, {\bf311} (2004), 314.], [ Progr. Theor. Phys., {\bf 109} (2003), 881.], [Trends in Statistical Physics {\bf 3} (2000), 115.] provides an adequate tool to transform Swinger-Dyson equations into a kinetic description outside any approximation scheme. Usual approaches in quantum electrodynamics (QED) are unable to cope with the mechanical momentum of the electron and replace it by the canonical momentum. The use of that unphysical momentum is responsible for the divergences that are removed …
The main motivation to study models in the presence of a minimal length is to obtain a quantum field theory free of the divergences. In this way, in this paper, we have constructed a new framework for quantum electrodynamics embedded in a minimal length scale background. New operators are introduced and the Green function method was used for the solution of the field equations, i.e., the Maxwell, Klein-Gordon and Dirac equations. We have analyzed specifically the scalar field and its one loop propagator. The mass of the scalar field regularized by the minimal length was obtained. The QED Lagra…
A manifestly gauge-invariant hamiltonian formulation of classical electrodynamics has been shown to be relativistic invariant by the construction of the adequate generators of the Poincare Lie algebra [Physica, 76, No. 3, 421-444 (1974)]. The original formulation in terms of reduced distribution functions for the particles and the fields is applied here to the case of two charges interacting through a classical electrodynamical field. On the other hand, we have been able in previous work to introduce irreversibility at the fundamental level of description [Ann. Phys., 311, 314-349 (2004)] by r…
We verify that quadratic divergences stemming from gravitational corrections to QED which have been conjectured to lead to asymptotic freedom near Planck scale are arbitrary (regularization dependent) and compatible with zero. Moreover we explicitly show that such arbitrary term contributes to the beta function of QED in a gauge dependent way in the gravitational sector.
We survey a new approach to the duality-invariant systems of nonlinear electrodynamics, based on introducing auxiliary bi-spinor fields. In this approach, the entire information about the given self-dual system is encoded in the U(1) invariant interaction of the auxiliary fields, while the standard self-dual Lagrangians appear on shell as a result of eliminating auxiliary fields by their equations of motion. Starting from the simplest U(1) duality, we show how this approach can be generalized to the U(N) duality (with N independent Maxwell field strengths), as well as to self-dual systems of {…
A new version of application Pauli-Villars regularized Green functions in the quantum field theory using higher derivatives is proposed. In this version the regularizing mass $M$ is large but finite. Our approach is demonstrated and discussed on the example of QED. It is shown that in our case there are no ultraviolet divergences and - on the example of the selfenergy spinor Feynman diagram - no infrared ones.
The method of flow equations is applied to QED on the light front. Requiring that the particle number conserving terms in the Hamiltonian are considered to be diagonal and the other terms off-diagonal an effective Hamiltonian is obtained which reduces the positronium problem to a two-particle problem, since the particle number violating contributions are eliminated. Using an effective electron-positron Hamiltonian, obtained in the second order in coupling, we analyze the positronium bound state problem analytically and numerically. The results obtained for Bohr spectrum and hyperfine splitting…
We study the infrared divergences arising from gravitational loops in the standard cosmological perturbation theory. We provide a simple solution to the problem at all orders of cosmological perturbation theory by redefining the perturbation theory in terms of a local observer. We propose to reformulate the standard perturbations in the in-in formalism, and obtain an infrared safe perturbation theory. Our results do not depend on any infrared cutoffs or similar parameters. We then present an explicit example of graviton one-loop corrections, and briefly discuss non-gaussianities.
We calculate the gravitational form factors of the electron at one loop in quantum electrodynamics, decomposing these into contributions from the electron and photon parts of the energy-momentum tensor. Ultraviolet divergences are removed through renormalization in the $\overline{\text{MS}}$ scheme. Infrared divergences are isolated and results are given in both dimensional regularization and photon-mass regularization. The form factors contain information about the electron's energy and angular momentum structure in QED, as well as its mass radius. Whenever possible, we compare our results wi…
We examine the generalized quantum electrodynamics as a natural extension of the Maxwell electrodynamics to cure the one-loop divergence. We establish a precise scenario to discuss the underlying features between photon and fermion where the perturbative Maxwell electrodynamics fails. Our quantum model combines stability, unitarity, and gauge invariance as the central properties. To interpret the quantum fluctuations without suffering from the physical conflicts proved by Haag's theorem, we construct the covariant quantization in the Heisenberg picture instead of the Interaction one. Furthermo…
This work comprises a study upon the quantization and the renormalizability of the generalized electrodynamics of spinless charged particles (mesons), namely, the Generalized Scalar Electrodynamics ($GSQED_{4}$). The theory is quantized in the covariant framework of the Batalin-Fradkin-Vilkovisky method. Thereafter, the complete Green's functions are obtained through functional methods and a proper discussion on the theory's renormalizability is also given. Next, it is presented the computation and further discussion on the radiative correction at $α$-order; and, as it turns out, an unexpected…
In this work the generation of generalized Chern-Simons terms in three dimensional quantum electrodynamics with high spatial derivatives is studied. We analyze the self-energy corrections to the gauge field propagator by considering an expansion of the amplitude up to third order in the external momenta. The divergences of the corrections are determined and explicit forms for the Chern-Simons terms with high derivatives are obtained. Some unusual aspects of the calculation are stressed and the existence of a smooth isotropic limit is proved. The transversality of the anisotropic gauge propagat…
The main goal of this work is to study systematically the quantum aspects of the interaction between scalar particles in the framework of Generalized Scalar Duffin-Kemmer-Petiau Electrodynamics (GSDKP). For this purpose the theory is quantized after a constraint analysis following Dirac's methodology by determining the Hamiltonian transition amplitude. In particular, the covariant transition amplitude is established in the generalized non-mixing Lorenz gauge. The complete Green's functions are obtained through functional methods and the theory's renormalizability is also detailed presented. Ne…
A new synthesis of the principles of relativity and quantum mechanics is developed by replacing the Poincaré group for the de Sitter one. The new relativistic quantum mechanics is an indefinite mass theory which is reduced to the standard theory on the mass shell. The charge conjugation acquires a geometrical meaning and the Stueckelberg interpretation for antiparticles naturally arises in the formalism. So the idea of the Dirac sea in the second quantized formalism proves to be superfluous. The off-shell theory is free from ultraviolet divergences, which only appear in the process of mass she…
A light-front Hamiltonian reproducing the results of two-dimensional quantum electrodynamics in the Lorentz coordinates is constructed using the bosonization procedure and an analysis of the bosonic perturbation theory in all orders in the fermion mass. The resulting Hamiltonian involves a supplementary counterterm in addition to the usual terms appearing in the naive light-front quantization. This term is proportional to a linear combination of zeroth fermion modes (which are multiplied by a factor compensating the charge and fermion number). The coefficient of the counterterm has no ultravio…
Podolsky's electromagnetism which explains some of unresolved problems of usual QED has been investigated in the framework of finite field dependent (FFBRST) BRST transformation. In this generalized QED (GQED), BRST invariant effective theories are written using generalized Lorenz gauge, $(1+\frac{\Box }{m_p^2})\partial^μA_μ=0$ and no mixing gauge condition $(1+\frac{\Box }{m_p^2})^\frac{1}{2} \ \partial^μA_μ=0$, it contains higher order derivative terms. No Mixing gauge is free from UV divergences in the radiative correction and easier to handle. We construct appropriate FFBRST transformation…
We study the heat kernel for the Laplace type partial differential operator acting on smooth sections of a complex spin-tensor bundle over a generic $n$-dimensional Riemannian manifold. Assuming that the curvature of the U(1) connection (that we call the electromagnetic field) is constant we compute the first two coefficients of the non-perturbative asymptotic expansion of the heat kernel which are of zero and the first order in Riemannian curvature and of arbitrary order in the electromagnetic field. We apply these results to the study of the effective action in non-perturbative electrodynami…
A power counting rule is provided that allows us to obtain upper bounds for the absolute values of Feynman parametric integrands. The rule reflects both the ultraviolet and infrared behavior taking into account that the external momenta are on the mass shell. It gives us the ability to rigorously prove the absolute convergence of the corresponding integrals. The consideration is limited to the case of the quantum electrodynamics Feynman graphs contributing to the lepton magnetic moments and not containing either lepton loops or ultraviolet divergent subgraphs. However, a rigorous mathematical …
Quantum parity conservation is verified at all orders in perturbation theory for a massless parity-even $U(1)\times U(1)$ planar quantum electrodynamics (QED$_3$) model. The presence of two massless fermions requires the Lowenstein-Zimmermann (LZ) subtraction scheme, in the framework of the Bogoliubov-Parasiuk-Hepp-Zimmermann-Lowenstein (BPHZL) renormalization method, in order to subtract the infrared divergences induced by the ultraviolet subtractions at 1- and 2-loops, however thanks to the superrenormalizability of the model the ultraviolet divergences are bounded up to 2-loops. Finally, it…
We elaborate on a new representation of Lagrangians of 4D nonlinear electrodynamics including the Born-Infeld theory as a particular case. In this new formulation, in parallel with the standard Maxwell field strength $F_{αβ}, \bar{F}_{\dotα\dotβ}$, an auxiliary bispinor field $V_{αβ}, \bar{V}_{\dotα\dotβ}$ is introduced. The gauge field strength appears only in bilinear terms of the full Lagrangian, while the interaction Lagrangian $E$ depends on the auxiliary fields, $E = E(V^2, \bar V^2)$. The generic nonlinear Lagrangian depending on $F,\bar{F}$ emerges as a result of eliminating the auxili…
We discuss IR divergences in lepton mass renormalization in Light-Front Quantum Electrodynamics (LFQED) in Feynman gauge. We consider LFQED with Pauli-Villars fields and using old-fashioned time ordered perturbation theory (TOPT), we show that our earlier result regarding cancellation of true IR divergences upto $O(e^4)$ in coherent state basis holds in Feynman gauge also.
In this work, we employ algebraic renormalization technique to show the renormalizability to all orders in perturbation theory of the Lorentz and CPT violating QED. Essentially, we control the breaking terms by using a suitable set of external sources. Thus, with the symmetries restored, a perturbative treatment can be consistently employed. After showing the renormalizability, the external sources attain certain physical values, which allow the recovering of the starting physical action. The main result is that the original QED action presents the three usual independent renormalization param…
This paper deals with the relativistic, quantized electromagnetic and Dirac field equations in the arena of discrete phase space and continuous time. The mathematical formulation involves partial difference equations. In the consequent relativistic quantum electrodynamics, the corresponding Feynman diagrams and S#-matrix elements are derived. In the special case of electron-electron scattering (Moller scattering), the explicit second order element <f|S#(2)|i> is deduced. Moreover, assuming the slow motions for two external electrons, the approximation of <f|S#(2)|i> yields a divergence-free Co…
The convergence of integrals over charge densities is discussed in relation with the problem of electric charge and (non-local) charged states in Quantum Electrodynamics (QED). Delicate, but physically relevant, mathematical points like the domain dependence of local charges as quadratic forms and the time smearing needed for strong convergence of integrals of charge densities are analyzed. The results are applied to QED and the choice of time smearing is shown to be crucial for the removal of vacuum polarization effects responible for the time dependence of the charge (Swieca phenomenon). The…
In this paper we study the axial anomaly in Very Special Relativity Electrodynamics using Pauli-Villars and dimensional regularization of ultraviolet divergences and Mandelstam-Leibbrandt regularization of infrared divergences. We compute the anomaly in 2 and 4 dimensional space-time. We find that this procedure preserves the vector Ward identity(charge conservation) and reproduce the standard axial anomaly in 2 and 4 dimensions without corrections from VSR. Finally, we show how to obtain the anomaly in the path integral approach.

We study field theories on the noncommutative Minkowski space with noncommuting time. The focus lies on dispersion relations in quantized interacting models in the Yang-Feldman formalism. In particular, we compute the two-point correlation function of the field strength in noncommutative quantum electrodynamics to second order. At this, we take into account the covariant coordinates that allow the construction of local gauge invariant quantities (observables). It turns out that this does not remove the well-known severe infrared problem, as one might have hoped. Instead, things become worse, s…
A simple mathematical procedure is introduced which allows redefining in an exact way divergent integrals and limits that appear in the basic equations of classical electrodynamics with point charges. In this way all divergences are at once removed without affecting the locality and the relativistic covariance of the theory, and with no need for mass renormalization. The procedure is first used to obtain a finite expression for the electromagnetic energy-momentum of the system. We show that the relativistic Lorentz-Dirac equation can be deduced from the conservation of this electromagnetic ene…
We consider one-particle reducible (1PR) contributions to QED and scalar QED processes in external fields, at one-loop and two-loop order. We investigate three cases in detail: constant crossed fields, constant magnetic fields, and plane waves. We find that 1PR tadpole contributions in plane waves and constant crossed fields are non-zero, but contribute only divergences to be renormalised away. In constant magnetic fields, on the other hand, tadpole contributions give physical corrections to processes at one-loop and beyond. Our calculations are exact in the external fields and we give strong …
We study the problem how to deal with tensor-type two-loop integrals in the Loop Regularization (LORE) scheme. We use the two-loop photon vacuum polarization in the massless Quantum Electrodynamics (QED) as the example to present the general procedure. In the processes, we find a new divergence structure: the regulated result for each two-loop diagram contains a gauge-violating quadratic harmful divergent term even combined with their corresponding counterterm insertion diagrams. Only when we sum up over all the relevant diagrams do these quadratic harmful divergences cancel, recovering the ga…
In the first part of this Dissertation, we study non-perturbative aspects of quantum electrodynamics on Riemannian manifolds by using heat kernel asymptotic expansion techniques. Here, we established the existence of a new non-perturbative heat kernel asymptotic expansion for a Laplace type operator on homogeneous Abelian bundles with parallel curvature, and we evaluated explicitly the first three coefficients. As an application, we computed the imaginary part of the non-perturbative effective action in quantum electrodynamics and derived a generalization of the classical Schwinger's result fo…
A variational method is discussed, based on the principle of minimal variance. The method seems to be suited for gauge interacting fermions, and the simple case of quantum electrodynamics is discussed in detail. The issue of renormalization is addressed, and the renormalized propagators are shown to be the solution of a set of finite integral equations. The method is proven to be viable and, by a spectral representation, the multi-dimensional integral equations are recast in one-dimensional equations for the spectral weights. The UV divergences are subtracted exactly, yielding a set of coupled…
It is shown that in non-linear electrodynamics (in particular, Born-Infeld one) in the framework of general relativity there exist "weakly singular" configurations such that (i) the proper mass M is finite in spite of divergences of the energy density, (ii) the electric charge q and Schwarzschild mass m ~ q can be made as small as one likes, (iv) all field and energy distributions are concentrated in the core region. This region has an almost zero surface area but a finite longitudinal size L=2M. Such configurations can be viewed as a new version of a classical analogue of an elementary partic…
A photon of momentum k can have only two polarization states, not three. Equivalently, one can say that the magnetic vector potential A must be divergence free in the Coulomb gauge. These facts are normally taken into account in QED by introducing two polarization vectors epsilon_λ(k) with lambda in {1,2}, which are orthogonal to the wave-vector k. These vectors must be very discontinuous functions of k and, consequently, their Fourier transforms have bad decay properties. Since these vectors have no physical significance there must be a way to eliminate them and their bad decay properties fro…
The generalized Born--Infeld electrodynamics with two parameters is investigated. In this model the propagation of a linearly polarized laser beam in the external transverse magnetic field is considered. It was shown that there is the effect of vacuum birefringence, and we evaluate induced ellipticity. The upper bounds on the combination of parameters introduced from the experimental data of BRST and PVLAS Collaborations were obtained. When two parameters are equal to each other, we arrive at Born--Infeld electrodynamics and the effect of vacuum birefringence vanishes. We find the canonical an…
We investigate the precisely measured anomalous magnetic moment and Lamb shift as tests for the possible existence of the radiatively induced Lorentz and CPT violation effects in quantum electrodynamics. To this end we calculate the one-loop vacuum polarization tensor and vertex radiative correction in dimensional reduction and on-shell renormalization scheme. We explicitly show how the Lorentz and CPT violation sector affects the anomalous magnetic moment and Lamb shift. Remarkably, we find infrared divergences coming from Lorentz and CPT violating term that do not cancel in physical cross se…
More than twenty years have passed since the threads of the `proper time formalism' in covariant classical and quantum mechanics were brought together to construct a canonical formalism for the relativistic mechanics of many particles. Drawing on the work of Fock, Stueckelberg, Nambu, Schwinger, and Feynman, the formalism was raised from the status of a purely formal mathematical technique to a covariant evolution theory for interacting particles. In the context of this theory, solutions have been found for the relativistic bound state problem, classical and quantum scattering in relativistic …
This paper proves that it is possible to build a Lagrangian for quantum electrodynamics which makes it explicit that the photon mass is eventually set to zero in the physical part on observational ground. Gauge independence is achieved upon considering the joint effect of gauge-averaging term and ghost fields. It remains possible to obtain a counterterm Lagrangian where the only non-gauge-invariant term is proportional to the squared divergence of the potential, while the photon propagator in momentum space falls off like 1 over (k-squared) at large k, which indeed agrees with perturbative ren…
We consider the Casimir energy in a geometry of an infinite magnetodielectric wedge closed by a circularly cylindrical, perfectly conducting arc embedded in another magnetodielectric medium, under the condition that the speed of light be the same in both media. An expression for the Casimir energy corresponding to the arc is obtained and it is found that in the limit where the reflectivity of the wedge boundaries tends to unity the finite part of the Casimir energy of a perfectly conducting wedge-shaped sheet closed by a circular cylinder is regained. The energy of the latter geometry possesse…
Axion electrodynamics is based upon the Lagrangian of the electromagnetic (EM) field plus its interaction with the axions, and is accordingly a physically open system. It means that the four-divergence of the EM energy-momentum tensor is different from zero, implying in turn that the total EM energy and momentum (when integrated over all space) do not constitute a four-vector. The EM force is in principle accessible to experimental detection, just analogous to what is the case in ordinary electrodynamics. In the first half of this paper the energy-momentum aspects of axion electrodynamics are …
A divergence-free approach to relativistic quantum electrodynamics based on regularisation of equations of quantum mechanics is discussed. This approach is shown to be exactly equivalent to the conventional Feynman-Dyson renormalisation techniques.
In 1999, R. B. Mann proposed a counterterm that is some sort of generalization of the well-known Holographic counterterm and that can eliminate the divergence of the gravitational action of asymptotically AdS and flat spacetimes (Phys. Rev. D $\boldsymbol{60}$ (1999) 104047 [1]). I show it is not only for eliminating the divergence of such spacetimes but also for setting the ground state energy to zero for any $d$-dimensional spacetimes with an $S^{d-2} \times \mathbb{R} $ boundary geometry, and speculate it is also true for spacetimes with any (suitable) boundary geometry and topology.
We consider a massive scalar field living on the recently found exact quantum space-time corresponding to vacuum spherically symmetric loop quantum gravity. The discreteness of the quantum space time naturally regularizes the scalar field, eliminating divergences. However, the resulting finite theory depends on the details of the micro physics. We argue that such dependence can be eliminated through a finite renormalization and discuss its nature. This is an example of how quantum field theories on quantum space times deal with the issues of divergences in quantum field theories.
