We examine the efficiency of gravitational bremsstrahlung production in the process of head-on collision of two boosted Schwarzschild black holes. We constructed initial data for the characteristic initial value problem in Robinson-Trautman spacetimes, that represent two instantaneously stationary Schwarzschild black holes in motion towards each other with the same velocity. The Robinson-Trautman equation was integrated for these initial data using a numerical code based on the Galerkin method. The final resulting configuration is a boosted black hole with Bondi mass greater than the sum of the individual mass of each initial black hole. Two relevant aspects of the process are presented. The first relates the efficiency $Δ$ of the energy extraction by gravitational wave emission to the mass of the final black hole. This relation is fitted by a distribution function of non-extensive thermostatistics with entropic parameter $q \simeq 1/2$; the result extends and validates analysis based on the linearized theory of gravitational wave emission. The second is a typical bremsstrahlung angular pattern in the early period of emission at the wave zone, a consequence of the deceleration of the black holes as they coalesce; this pattern evolves to a quadrupole form for later times.
We show that static sources coupled to a massless scalar field in Schwarzschild spacetime give rise to emission and absorption of zero-energy particles due to the presence of Hawking radiation. This is in complete analogy with the description of the bremsstrahlung by a uniformly accelerated charge from the coaccelerated observers' point of view. The response rate of the source is found to coincide with that in Minkowski spacetime as a function of its proper acceleration. This result may be viewed as restoration of the equivalence principle by the Hawking effect.
The number of superheavy particles with the mass of the Grand Unification scale with trans-Planckian energy created at the epoch of superheavy particle creation from vacuum by the gravitation of the expanding Universe is calculated. In later collisions of these particles gravitational radiation is radiated playing the role of bremsstrahlung for gravity. The effective background radiation of the Universe is evaluated.
The collision of two massless, gravitationally interacting, point-like massless particles, boosted to the speed of light, colliding with an impact parameter b is being investigated. The collision takes place in four space-time flat dimensional background. A perturbative scheme is employed and the corrections to the energy momentum tensor and to the metric are computed and closed form formulas are provided. This includes the back-reaction on the metric after the collision. Including such corrections suggests that the tracelessness of the initial stress tensors of the colliding particles is pres…
We calculate axion radiation emitted in the collision of two straight global strings. The strings are supposed to be in the unexcited ground state, to be inclined with respect to each other, and to move in parallel planes. Radiation arises when the point of minimal separation between the strings moves faster than light. This effect exhibits a typical Cerenkov nature. Surprisingly, it allows an alternative interpretation as bremsstrahlung under a collision of point charges in 2+1 electrodynamics. This can be demonstrated by suitable world-sheet reparameterizations and dimensional reduction. Cos…
Two particle collisions close to the horizon of the rotating nonextremal Kerr's and Schwarzschild black holes are analyzed. For the case of multiple collisions it is shown that high energy in the centre of mass frame occurs due to a great relative velocity of two particles and a large Lorentz factor. The dependence of the relative velocity on the distance to horizon is analyzed, the time of movement from the point in the accretion disc to the point of scattering with large energy as well as the time of back movement to the Earth are calculated. It is shown that they have reasonable order.
Advances in our understanding of perturbation theory suggest the existence of a correspondence between classical general relativity and Yang-Mills theory. A concrete example of this correspondence, which is known as the double copy, was recently introduced for the case of stationary Kerr-Schild spacetimes. Building on this foundation, we examine the simple time-dependent case of an accelerating, radiating point source. The gravitational solution, which generalises the Schwarzschild solution, includes a non-trivial stress-energy tensor. This stress-energy tensor corresponds to a gauge theoretic…
In June 2015 the Large Hadron Collider was able to produce collisions with an energy of 13TeV, where collisions at these energy levels may allow for the formation of higher dimensional black holes. In order to detect these higher dimensional black holes we require an understanding of their emission spectra. One way of determining this is by looking at the absorption probabilities associated with the black hole. In this proceedings we will look at the absorption probability for spin-3/2 particles near $N$-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes. We will show how the Unruh method is used to determ…
We consider perturbations of a Schwarzschild black hole that can be of both even and odd parity, keeping terms up to second order in perturbation theory, for the $\ell=2$ axisymmetric case. We develop explicit formulae for the evolution equations and radiated energies and waveforms using the Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli approach. This formulation is useful, for instance, for the treatment in the ``close limit approximation'' of the collision of counterrotating black holes.
In previous work, we derived the most general solution of the collisionless Boltzmann equation describing the accretion of a kinetic gas into a Schwarzschild black hole background, and we gave explicit expressions for the corresponding observables (the current density and stress energy-momentum tensor) in terms of certain integrals over the distribution function. In this article, we numerically compute these integrals for the particular case of the steady-state, spherical symmetric accretion flows which, at infinity, are described by an equilibrium distribution function of given temperature. W…
It has been shown by Bañados, Silk and West (BSW) that the center of mass energy (E_cm) of test particles starting from rest at infinity and colliding near the horizon of a Schwarzschild black hole is always finite. In this communication, we extent the BSW scenario and study two particles with different energies colliding near the horizon of a static spherically symmetric black hole. Surprisingly, we find that even for the static spherically symmetric (i.e., Schwarzschild like) black holes it is possible to obtain an arbitrarily high E cm from the two test particles colliding near the horizon …
We describe stationary and axisymmetric gas configurations surrounding black holes. They consist of a collisionless relativistic kinetic gas of identical massive particles following bound orbits in a Schwarzschild exterior spacetime and are modeled by a one-particle distribution function which is the product of a function of the energy and a function of the orbital inclination associated with the particle's trajectory. The morphology of the resulting configuration is analyzed.
Classical gravitational bremsstrahlung in particle collisions at transplanckian energies is studied in ${\mathcal M}_4\times {\mathcal T}^d$. The radiation efficiency $ε\equiv E_{\rm rad}/E_{\rm initial}$ is computed in terms of the Schwarzschild radius $r_S(\sqrt{s})$, the impact parameter $b$ and the Lorentz factor $γ_{\rm cm}$ and found to be $ε=C_d (r_S/b)^{3d+3} γ_{\rm cm}^{2d+1}$, larger than previous estimates by many powers of $γ_{\rm cm}\gg 1$. The result is reliable for impact parameters in the overlap of $r_S<b<b_c {\rm and} b>λ_C$, with $b_c$ marking (for $d\neq 0$) the loss of the…
We study the collision of two massive particles with non-zero intrinsic spin moving in the equatorial plane in the background of a Schwarzschild black hole surrounded by quintessential matter field (SBHQ). For the quintessential matter equation of state (EOS) parameter, we assume three different values. It is shown that for collisions outside the event horizon, but very close to it, the centre-of-mass energy ($E_{\rm CM}$) can grow without bound if exactly one of the colliding particles is what we call near-critical, i.e., if its constants of motion are fine tuned such that the time component …
The ``close limit,'' a method based on perturbations of Schwarzschild spacetime, has proved to be a very useful tool for finding approximate solutions to models of black hole collisions. Calculations carried out with second order perturbation theory have been shown to give the limits of applicability of the method without the need for comparison with numerical relativity results. Those second order calculations have been carried out in a fixed coordinate gauge, a method that entails conceptual and computational difficulties. Here we demonstrate a gauge invariant approach to such calculations. …
We present an algorithm for calculating the complete data on an event horizon which constitute the necessary input for characteristic evolution of the exterior spacetime. We apply this algorithm to study the intrinsic and extrinsic geometry of a binary black hole event horizon, constructing a sequence of binary black hole event horizons which approaches a single Schwarzschild black hole horizon as a limiting case. The linear perturbation of the Schwarzschild horizon provides global insight into the close limit for binary black holes, in which the individual holes have joined in the infinite pa…
We investigate accretion of dark matter onto a moving Schwarzschild black hole. The dark matter is modeled by the collisionless Vlasov gas, assumed to be in thermal equilibrium at infinity. We derive an exact stationary solution and provide a compact formula for the mass accretion rate. In general, the mass accretion rate is a nonmonotonic function of the black hole velocity. A monotonic relation (the accretion rate proportional to the Lorentz factor associated with the velocity of the black hole) is obtained for high asymptotic temperatures of the gas. The derived accretion rates are relevant…

It is shown that the extremal Reissner-Nordström black hole, the non-extremal one with multiple scattering particles, and the Schwarzschild black hole with radial head-on particles are stable under the collision of the particles near the horizon, if the back-reaction effect and the effect generated by gravity of particles are involved. Moreover, the collision near Reissner-Nordström black holes with astrophysically typical mass can not generate the Planck-scale center-of-mass energy. However, the head-on collision near the typical primordial black hole could just occur at the Planck-energy sca…
We compute spectra, waveforms, angular distribution and total gravitational energy of the gravitiational radiation emitted during the radial infall of a massless particle into a Schwarzschild black hole. Our fully relativistic approach shows that (i) less than 50% of the total energy radiated to infinity is carried by quadrupole waves, (ii) the spectra is flat, and (iii) the zero frequency limit agrees extremely well with a prediction by Smarr. This process may be looked at as the limiting case of collisions between massive particles traveling at nearly the speed of light, by identifying the e…
We investigate the electromagnetic radiation released during the high energy collision of a charged point particle with a four-dimensional Schwarzschild black hole. We show that the spectra is flat, and well described by a classical calculation. We also compare the total electromagnetic and gravitational energies emitted, and find that the former is supressed in relation to the latter for very high energies. These results could apply to the astrophysical world in the case charged stars and small charged black holes are out there colliding into large black holes, and to a very high energy colli…
I discuss two examples of time-dependent flow which can be described in terms of an AdS Schwarzschild black hole via holography. The first example involves Bjorken hydrodynamics which should be applicable to the formation of the quark gluon plasma in heavy ion collisions. The second example is the cosmological evolution of our Universe.
It is known that the center-of-mass energy of the collision of two massive particles following geodesics around a black hole presents a maximum. The maximum energy increases when the black hole is endowed with spin, and for a maximally rotating hole this energy blows up, offering, in principle, a unique probe of fundamental physics. This work extends the latter studies by considering that the colliding particles possess intrinsic angular momentum (spin), described by the Hanson-Regge-Hojman theory of spinning particles. By analyzing planar trajectories of spinning particles around non-rotating…
We provide a systematic study for the accretion of a collisionless, relativistic kinetic gas into a nonrotating black hole. To this end, we first solve the relativistic Liouville equation on a Schwarzschild background spacetime. The most general solution for the distribution function is given in terms of appropriate symplectic coordinates on the cotangent bundle, and the associated observables, including the particle current density and stress energy-momentum tensor, are determined. Next, we explore the case where the flow is steady-state and spherically symmetric. Assuming that in the asympto…
Motivated by the TeV-scale gravity scenarios, we study gravitational radiation in the head-on collision of two black holes in higher dimensional spacetimes using a close-limit approximation. We prepare time-symmetric initial data sets for two black holes (the so-called Brill-Lindquist initial data) and numerically evolve the spacetime in terms of a gauge invariant formulation for the perturbation around the higher-dimensional Schwarzschild black holes. The waveform and radiated energy of gravitational waves emitted in the head-on collision are clarified. Also, the complex frequencies of fundam…
The perturbation theory of black holes has been useful recently for providing estimates of gravitational radiation from black hole collisions. Second order perturbation theory, relatively undeveloped until recently, has proved to be important both for providing refined estimates and for indicating the range of validity of perturbation theory. Here we present the second order formalism for perturbations of Schwarzschild spacetimes. The emphasis is on practical methods for carrying out second order computations of outgoing radiation. General issues are illustrated throughout with examples from `…
It is shown that in the Schwarzschild background there exists direct counterpart of the Bañados-Silk-West effect for spinning particles. This means that if two particles collide near the black hole horizon, their energy in the centre of mass frame can grow unbounded. In doing so, the crucial role is played by so-called near-critical trajectories when particle's parameters are almost fine-tuned. Direct scenario of the collision under discussion is possible with restriction on the energy-to-mass ratio \thinspace $E/m<\frac{1}{2\sqrt{3}}$ only. However, if one takes into account multiple scatteri…
