Classical gravitational bremsstrahlung in particle collisions at transplanckian energies is studied in ${\mathcal M}_4\times {\mathcal T}^d$. The radiation efficiency $ε\equiv E_{\rm rad}/E_{\rm initial}$ is computed in terms of the Schwarzschild radius $r_S(\sqrt{s})$, the impact parameter $b$ and the Lorentz factor $γ_{\rm cm}$ and found to be $ε=C_d (r_S/b)^{3d+3} γ_{\rm cm}^{2d+1}$, larger than previous estimates by many powers of $γ_{\rm cm}\gg 1$. The result is reliable for impact parameters in the overlap of $r_S<b<b_c {\rm and} b>λ_C$, with $b_c$ marking (for $d\neq 0$) the loss of the notion of classical trajectories and $λ_C\equiv \hbar/mc$ the Compton length of the scattered particles. The condition on $s$ and $m$ for extreme radiation damping and (presumably) no black hole production is also derived.
We discuss whether the particles undergoing transplanckian collisions in TeV-scale gravity can deplete all their energy on bremsstrahlung for the impact parameters much larger than the gravitational radius of the presumably created black hole.
We propose a parton model of inelastic collisions at transplanckian energies E >> G^{-1/2}, using the gravitons, whose transverse momenta are cut at the Planck scale, as partons. For this purpose we represent the gravitational shock-wave accompanying the fast particle in terms of such partons and take into account the higher order multiperipheral-like contributions. We argue that the internal part of this shock plane contains the ``black'' disk of radius R(E) ~ E^{1/2} filled by such hard partons with the Planck density. When two fast particles collide the hard graviton production comes from t…
The classical Einstein gravity description of black hole production in transplanckian collisions in TeV-scale gravity is tested for self-consistency. In addition to the "curvature must be small" test, which was shown to be violated in [hep-ph/0401116], it is proposed to estimate quantum fluctuations in the Aichelburg-Sexl shock waves corresponding to the colliding particles. Using linearized quantum gravity, it is found that the occupation numbers of gravitons with characteristic frequency are too small to resolve the classical width of the shocks. This raises further doubts in the classical g…
The collision of two massless, gravitationally interacting, point-like massless particles, boosted to the speed of light, colliding with an impact parameter b is being investigated. The collision takes place in four space-time flat dimensional background. A perturbative scheme is employed and the corrections to the energy momentum tensor and to the metric are computed and closed form formulas are provided. This includes the back-reaction on the metric after the collision. Including such corrections suggests that the tracelessness of the initial stress tensors of the colliding particles is pres…
New gauge bosons coupling to leptons are simple and well-motivated extensions of the Standard Model. We study the sensitivity to gauged $L_μ -L_{e}$, $L_e-L_τ$ and $L_μ -L_τ$ both with the existing beam dump mode data of MiniBooNE and with the DUNE near detector. We find that including bremsstrahlung and resonant production of $Z'$ which decays to $e^{\pm}$ and $μ^{\pm}$ final states leads to a significant improvement in existing bounds, especially for $L_μ-L_e$ and $L_e-L_τ$ for DUNE while competitive constraints can be achieved with the existing data from the MiniBooNE's beam dump run.
The bremsstrahlung spectrum of photons accompanying $W$ pair production depends on the decay width of the unstable $W$ bosons. The dependence arises from the interference between emission at different stages of the production and decay process. We present a quantitative discussion of this effect, and consider the implications for measurements at LEP2 and LC energies.
Photoproduction of electron-positron pairs by bremsstrahlung gamma-rays propagating through a high-intensity optical laser wave is studied. By calculating total pair production yields as well as energy and angular distributions of the produced particles for a range of laser intensities, we analyze the influence that the broad frequency spectrum of bremsstrahlung exerts on the properties of the process in the transition region between the perturbative and non-perturbative interaction regimes. In particular, we demonstrate a continuous shifting of the mainly contributing interval of bremsstrahlu…
We derive a set of new formulas for various distributions in dilepton production via virtual photon bremsstrahlung from pseudoscalar mesons and unpolarized spin-one-half fermions. These formulas correspond to the leading and sub-leading terms in the Low-Burnett-Kroll expansion for real photon bremsstrahlung. The relation of our leading-term formulas to previous works is also shown. Existing formulas are examined in the light of Lorentz covariance and gauge invariance. Numerical comparison is made in a simple example, where an "exact" formula and real photon data exist. The results reveal large…
Experiments using proton beams at high luminosity colliders and fixed target facilities provide impressive sensitivity to new light weakly coupled degrees of freedom. With these experiments in mind, we revisit the production of dark vectors and scalars via proton bremsstrahlung, making use of a model that describes the underlying nucleon scattering cross-section in the forward direction due to pomeron exchange. We compare the resulting distributions and rates with those obtained via variants of the Fermi-Weizsacker-Williams approximation, and provide production rate distributions for a range o…
The energy reconstruction of high-energy muons depends on the energy loss characteristics. Accurate knowledge of the cross sections of the energy loss processes is necessary for precise measurements of the energy spectrum of muons and muon-induced neutrinos. The cross sections of the two most dominant processes, electron pair production and bremsstrahlung are calculated exact in the coupling parameter $Zα$ to the electromagnetic field of a nucleus for realistic extended screened nuclei. An analytical parametrization of the mass and nuclear-charge dependence of the cross section is given.
The objective of this work is to report on the modifications in air shower development due to muon bremsstrahlung and muonic pair production. In order to do that we have implemented new muon bremsstrahlung and muonic pair production procedures in the AIRES air shower simulation system, and have used it to simulate ultra high energy showers in different conditions. The influence of the mentioned processes in the global development of the air shower is important for primary particles of large zenith angles, while they do not introduce significant changes in the position of the shower maximum.
Differential and integral cross sections of the muon are calculated in the materials: water, standard rock, iron and lead with and without the LPM effect. The corresponding cross sections are also calculated with dielectric supression effect (Ter-Mikaelian effect), in addition to the LPM effect. To demonstrate the importance of the LPM effect in the bremsstrahlung process, depth intensity relation of muon, energy spectrum, range distribution and survival probability are calculated taking into account bremsstrahlung spectrum.
In this paper, we extend the study of bremsstrahlung photon production in a quark-gluon plasma to the cases of soft static photons and hard real photons. The general framework of this study is the effective perturbative expansion based on the resummation of hard thermal loops. Despite the fact that bremsstrahlung only comes at two loops, we find that in both cases it generates contributions of the same order of magnitude as those already calculated by several other groups at one loop. Furthermore, a new process contained in the two-loop diagrams dominate the emission of a very hard real photon…
The environment in which bremsstrahlung and pair creation occurs can strongly affect cross sections for these processes. Because ultra-relativistic electromagnetic interactions involve very small longitudinal momentum transfers, the reactions occur gradually, spread over long distances. During this time, even relatively weak factors can accumulate enough to disrupt the interaction. This review will discuss a variety of factors which can suppress bremsstrahlung and pair production, as well as related effects involving beamstrahlung and QCD processes. After surveying different theoretical approa…
It is proposed that soft particle production in hadronic collisions is dominated by multiple gluon exchanges between partons from the colliding hadrons, followed by radiation of hadronic clusters from the coloured partons distributed uniformly in rapidity. This explains naturally two dominant features of the data: (a) The linear increase of rapidity spectra in the regions of limiting fragmentation and, (b) the proportionality between the increasing width of the limiting fragmentation region and the height of the central plateau.
Vector bosons, such as Dark Photon $A'$ or $Z'$, can couple to muons and be produced in the bremsstrahlung reaction $μ^- + N \rightarrow μ^- + N + A'(Z')$. Their possible subsequent invisible decay can be detected in fixed target experiments through missing energy/momentum signature. In such experiments, not only is the energy transfer to $A'(Z')$ important, but also the recoil muon angle $ψ_{μ'}$. In this paper, we derive the total and the double differential cross-sections involved in this process using the phase space Weiszäcker-Williams and improved Weiszäcker-Williams approximations, as w…
We compare different formalisms for the calculation of lepton pair emission in hadron-hadron collisions and discuss the consequences of the approximations inherent to each of them. Using a Lorentz-covariant and gauge-invariant formalism proposed by Lichard, we calculate lepton pair emission via bremsstrahlung in proton-proton and neutron-proton reactions at energies between 1 and 5 GeV to leading order in the virtual photon four-momentum. These new results suggest that some previous bremsstrahlung calculations based on varieties of the soft-photon approximation might have somewhat overestimate…
The anomalous excess of small-kT photons radiated along with multi-hadron production, is challenging the physics community over four decades, but no solution has been proposed so far. We argue that the problem is rooted in the comparison with an incorrect model, usually called bremsstrahlung model. It is believed to be an extension of the Low theorem from the 2 -> 2+gamma process to radiative multi-particle production 2 -> n+gamma, where either initial, or final charged hadrons participate in radiation. We demonstrate that this breaks down unitarity of the S-matrix, so contradicts the optical …
We calculate the first Coulomb correction to the spectra of two processes: the electron bremsstrahlung and electron-positron photoproduction in the Coulomb field. We show that, in contrast to the results obtained in the Born approximation and in the high-energy limit, the obtained corrections for these two process are not related by the crossing symmetry substitutions. The found corrections determine the leading contribution to the charge asymmetry in these processes. We use modern multiloop methods based on the IBP reduction and on the differential equations for master integrals. The results …

Radiative electron-proton scattering is studied in peripheral kinematics, where the scattered electron and photon move close to the direction of the initial electron. Even in the case of unpolarized initial electron the photon may have a definite polarization. The differential cross sections with longitudinally or transversal polarized initial electron are calculated. The same phenomena are considered for the production of an electron-positron pair by the photon, where the final positron (electron) can be also polarized. Differential distributions for the case of polarized initial photon are g…
We present a first calculation of the rate for plasmon production in semiconductors from nuclei recoiling against dark matter. The process is analogous to bremsstrahlung of transverse photon modes, but with a longitudinal plasmon mode emitted instead. For dark matter in the 10 MeV - 1 GeV mass range, we find that the plasmon bremsstrahlung rate is 4-5 orders of magnitude smaller than that for elastic scattering, but 4-5 orders of magnitude larger than the transverse bremsstrahlung rate. Because the plasmon can decay into electronic excitations and has characteristic energy given by the plasma …
We study the bremsstrahlung of virtual omega mesons due to the collective deceleration of nuclei at the initial stage of an ultrarelativistic heavy-ion collision. It is shown that electromagnetic decays of these mesons may give an important contribution to the observed yields of dileptons. Mass spectra of positron-electron and muon pairs produced in central Au+Au collisions are calculated under some simplifying assumptions on the space-time variation of the baryonic current in a nuclear collision process. Comparison with the CERES data for 160 AGev Pb+Au collisions shows that the proposed mech…
A soft photon approximation is used to calculate the rates of lepton pair production through virtual bremsstrahlung from both pions and quarks. Standard assumptions about the evolution of a nuclear system under collision allow pion and quark driven total production to be calculated. Comparisons are made with Dalitz decay of light mesons. These mechanisms are expected to be significant contributors to the soft dilepton mass spectra one might observe in heavy ion collisions at RHIC and LHC energies.
Most calculations of air shower development have been based on the Bethe-Heitler cross sections for bremsstrahlung and pair production. However, for energetic enough particles, a number of different external factors can reduce these cross sections drastically, slowing shower development and lengthening the showers. Four mechanisms that can suppress bremsstrahlung and pair production cross sections are discussed, and their effect on extremely high energy air showers considered. Besides lengthening the showers, these mechanisms greatly increase the importance of fluctuations in shower developmen…
A possible setup for the experimental verification of linear Breit-Wheeler pair creation of electrons and positrons in photon-photon collisions is studied theoretically. It combines highly energetic bremsstrahlung photons, which are assumed to be generated by an incident beam of GeV electrons penetrating through a high-$Z$ target, with keV photons from an X-ray laser field, which is described as a focused Gaussian pulse. We discuss the dependencies of the pair yields on the incident electron energy, target thickness, laser parameters, and collision geometry. It is shown that, for suitable cond…
We calculate elementary proton-proton and neutron-proton bremsstrahlung and their contribution to the $e^+e^-$ invariant mass distribution. At 4.9 GeV, the proton-proton contribution is larger than neutron-proton, but it is small compared to recent data. We then make a first calculation of bremsstrahlung in nucleon-nucleon reactions with multi-hadron final states. Again at 4.9 GeV, the many-body bremsstrahlung is larger than simple nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung by more than an order of magnitude in the low-mass region. When the bremsstrahlung contributions are summed with Dalitz decay of the …

Experimental efforts toward the detection of the nonperturbative strong-field regime of the Breit-Wheeler pair creation process plan to combine incoherent sources of GeV $γ$ quanta and the coherent fields of tightly focussed optical laser pulses. This endeavour calls for a theoretical understanding of how the pair yields depend on the applied laser field profile. We provide estimates for the number of produced pairs in a setup where the high-energy radiation is generated via bremsstrahlung. Attention is paid to the role of the transversal and longitudinal focussing of the laser field, along wi…
We will describe radiative corrections to bremsstrahlung, focusing on applications to luminosity, fermion pair production, and radiative return at high-energy e+ e- colliders. A precise calculation of the Bhabha luminosity process was essential at SLC and LEP, and will be equally important in ILC physics. We will review the exact results for two-photon radiative corrections to Bhabha scattering which led to the precision estimates for the BHLUMI MC. We will also compare the implementation of the virtual photon correction to bremsstrahlung for fermion pair production in the KK MC to similar exa…
The implications of a numerical error in the photon production rate on the direct photon spectrum of a chemically non-equilibrated quark-gluon plasma are discussed.
We calculate numerically the emissivity and surface flux of electron-electron bremsstrahlung radiation from the surface of a bare quark star. The restricted electronic phase space due to the presence of an effective photon mass results in a strong suppression. The emissivity and surface flux are found to be substantially smaller than those found in previous work, to the point where electron-positron pair production would remain the dominant mechanism at all temperatures in the relativistic regime. As a consequence, pair production remains a dominant process even at low surface temperatures as …
We consider production of dilepton pairs through coherent electro-magnetic radiation during nuclear collisions. We show that the number of pairs produced through bremsstrahlung is about two orders of magnitude smaller than the yield measured by the CERES collaboration. Therefore, coherent bremsstrahlung can be ruled out as an explanation for the observed enhancement of low mass dileptons in CERES and HELIOS.
We discuss the dark gauge boson emission from neutron stars via nucleon-nucleon bremsstrahlung. Through the rigorous treatment of the effective field theory prescription and the thermal effect, we derive the relevant couplings of dark gauge bosons to hadrons in medium. As a specific example, the $U(1)_{\rm B-L}$ gauge boson scenario is chosen to investigate dark gauge boson emissivities during supernovae and cooling of young neutron stars. From the stellar cooling argument, we obtain the constraints on the $\rm B-L$ gauge coupling for given gauge boson masses in two observations: the duration …
We consider the problem of axion production by bremsstrahlung emission in a nuclear medium. The usual assumption of a massless axion is replaced by more general hypotheses, so that we can describe the emission process for axions with mass up to a few MeV. We point out that in certain physical situations the contribution from non-zero mass is non-negligible. In particular, in the mechanism for the production of Gamma Ray Bursts via emission of heavy axions the axion mass m_a ~ 1MeV is comparable with the temperature of the nuclear medium and thus can not be disregarded. Looking at our results w…
Dark matter may only interact with the visible sector efficiently at energy scales above the inflaton mass, such as the Planck scale or the grand unification scale. In such a scenario, the dark matter is mainly produced out of equilibrium during the period of reheating, often referred to as UV freeze-in. We evaluate the abundance of the dark matter generated from bremsstrahlung off the inflaton decay products assuming no direct coupling between the inflaton and the dark matter. This process generally dominates the production of dark matter for low reheating temperatures where the production th…
Collective bremsstrahlung of vector meson fields caused by mutual deceleration of the colliding nuclei is considered within the time-dependent Walecka theory. Excitation functions and rapidity distributions of particles produced by this mechanism are calculated under some simplifying assumptions about the space-time variation of the baryon current in a nuclear collision. In the case of central Au+Au collisions the bremsstrahlung mechanism becomes comparable with particle production in incoherent hadron--hadron collisions above the AGS energies.
The problem of black hole production in transplanckian particle collisions is revisited, in the context of large extra dimensions scenarios of TeV-scale gravity. The validity of the standard description of this process (two colliding Aichelburg-Sexl shock waves in classical Einstein gravity) is questioned. It is observed that the classical spacetime has large curvature along the transverse collision plane, as signaled by the curvature invariant (R_ijkl)^2. Thus quantum gravity effects, and in particular higher curvature corrections to the Einstein gravity, cannot be ignored. To give a specific…
A systematic investigation of hard thermal photon spectra from central ultra-relativistic heavy ion collisions is presented with emphasis on the effects of bremsstrahlung processes in the quark-gluon plasma (QGP). Bremsstrahlung photon production in the quark-gluon plasma has recently been considered within the Braaten-Pisarski method in thermal QCD, where rates have been found that exhibit the same order in the coupling constants as those describing the lowest order processes, Compton scattering and q\bar{q}-annihilation. The impact of these bremsstrahlung photon production rates on the therm…
Comparative study of nonperturbative electron-positron pair production by intense laser fields colliding with either bremsstrahlung $γ$-rays or relativistic ions
Recently, the so-called relative transverse activity classifier, $R_{\rm T}$, has been proposed as a tool to disentangle the particle production originated from the soft and hard QCD processes in proton-proton (pp) collisions. $R_{\rm T}$ is a useful quantity to study particle production in events with exceptionally large or small activity in the transverse region with respect to the event-averaged mean. Contrary to the expectations, the preliminary results of the ALICE Collaboration indicate that, e.g., the proton-to-pion ratio does not exhibit the characteristic enhancement at intermediate $…
In a plasma at temperature close to the fundamental scale a small fraction of particles will experience transplanckian collisions that may result in microscopic black holes (BHs). We study the dynamics of a system (a black hole gas) defined by radiation at a given temperature coupled to a distribution of BHs of different mass. Our analysis includes the production of BHs in photon-photon collisions, BH evaporation, the absorption of radiation, collisions of two BHs to give a larger one, and the effects of the expansion. We find that the system may follow two different generic paths depending on…
We have made a detailed and quantitative study of dilepton production via bremsstrahlung of a virtual photon during pion-pion collisions. Most calculations of electromagnetic radiation from strong interaction processes rely on the soft photon approximation (SPA). The conditions underlying this approximation are generally violated when dilepton spectra are calculated in terms of their invariant mass, so that an approach going beyond the SPA becomes necessary. Superseding previous derivations, we derive an exact formula for the bremsstrahlung cross section. The resulting formulation is compared …
Collective bremsstrahlung of vector meson fields in relativistic nuclear collisions is studied within the time-dependent Walecka model. Mutual deceleration of the colliding nuclei is described by introducing the effective stopping time and average rapidity loss of baryons. It is shown that electromagnetic decays of virtual omega-mesons produced by bremsstrahlung mechanism can provide a substantial contribution to the soft dilepton yield at the SPS bombarding energies. In particular, it may be responsible for the dilepton enhancement observed in 160 AGev central Pb+Au collisions. Suggestions fo…
First we calculate cross section for the $γp \to ωp$ reaction from the threshold to very large energies. At low energies the pion exchange is the dominant mechanism. At large energies the experimental cross section can be well described within the $k_{t}$-factorization approach by adjusting light-quark constituent mass. Next we calculate differential distributions for the $p p \to p p ω$ reaction at RHIC, Tevatron and LHC energies for the first time in the literature. We consider photon-pomeron (pomeron-photon), photon-pion (pion-photon) as well as diffractive hadronic bremsstrahlung mechanism…
