We present a first calculation of the rate for plasmon production in semiconductors from nuclei recoiling against dark matter. The process is analogous to bremsstrahlung of transverse photon modes, but with a longitudinal plasmon mode emitted instead. For dark matter in the 10 MeV - 1 GeV mass range, we find that the plasmon bremsstrahlung rate is 4-5 orders of magnitude smaller than that for elastic scattering, but 4-5 orders of magnitude larger than the transverse bremsstrahlung rate. Because the plasmon can decay into electronic excitations and has characteristic energy given by the plasma frequency $ω_p$, with $ω_p \approx 16$ eV in Si crystals, plasmon production provides a distinctive signature and new method to detect nuclear recoils from sub-GeV dark matter.
In their recent preprint [arXiv:2002.06937], Kurinsky, Baxter, Kahn, and Krnjaic assume an unphysical ionization yield for plasmon excitations in order to claim a possible dark matter signal. Their proposed signal is not possible based on known physics, but their proposed detection method warrants further investigation.
We present a novel unifying interpretation of excess event rates observed in several dark matter direct-detection experiments that utilize single-electron threshold semiconductor detectors. Despite their different locations, exposures, readout techniques, detector composition, and operating depths, these experiments all observe statistically significant excess event rates of $\sim$ 10 Hz/kg. However, none of these persistent excesses has yet been reported as a dark matter signal because individually, each can be attributed to different well-motivated but unmodeled backgrounds, and taken togeth…
Dark matter (DM) could couple to particles in the Standard Model (SM) through a light vector mediator. In the limit of small coupling, this portal could be responsible for producing the observed DM abundance through a mechanism known as freeze-in. Furthermore, the requisite DM-SM couplings provide a concrete benchmark for direct and indirect searches for DM. In this paper, we present updated calculations of the relic abundance for DM produced by freeze-in through a light vector mediator. We identify an additional production channel: the decay of photons that acquire an in-medium plasma mass. T…
Cosmic ray atmospheric showers provide an effective environment for the production of MeV-scale dark sector particles. We show that, when available, the resonant annihilation of positrons from the shower on atmospheric electrons is the dominant production mechanism by more than an order of magnitude. We provide a quantitative example based on dark photon production and update existing constraints on a corresponding light dark matter model from kilotons neutrino experiments and xenon-based direct detection experiments.
In the purely gravitational dark matter scenario, the dark matter particle does not have any interaction except for gravitational one. We study the gravitational particle production of dark matter particle in such a minimal setup and show that correct amount of dark matter can be produced depending on the inflation model and the dark matter mass. In particular, we carefully evaluate the particle production rate from the transition epoch to the inflaton oscillation epoch in a realistic inflation model and point out that the gravitational particle production is efficient even if dark matter mass…
We investigate light dark matter production associated with a heavy quarkonium at B factories in a model-independent way by adopting the effective field theory approach for the interaction of dark matter with standard model particles. We consider the effective operators for the dark matter-heavy quark interaction, which are relevant to the production of dark matter associated with a heavy quarkonium. We calculate the cross sections for dark matter production associated with a J/psi or eta_c to compare with the standard model backgrounds. We set bounds on the energy scale of new physics for var…
At the end of inflation, the inflaton field decays into an initially nonthermal population of relativistic particles which eventually thermalize. We consider the production of dark matter from this relativistic plasma, focusing on the prethermal phase. We find that for a production cross section $σ(E)\sim E^n$ with $n> 2$, the present dark matter abundance is produced during the prethermal phase of its progenitors. For $n\le 2$, entropy production during reheating makes the nonthermal contribution to the present dark matter abundance subdominant compared to that produced thermally. As specific…
We consider the simplest possibility for a model of particle dark matter in which dark matter has only gravitational interaction with the standard model sector. Even in such a case, it is known that the gravitational particle production in an expanding universe may lead to a correct relic abundance depending on the inflation scale and the mass of dark matter particle. We provide a comprehensive and systematic analysis of the gravitational particle production of fermionic and vectorial dark matter, and emphasize that particles which are much heavier than the Hubble parameter but lighter than in…
We study a novel dark matter production mechanism based on the freeze-in through semi-production, i.e. the inverse semi-annihilation processes. A peculiar feature of this scenario is that the production rate is suppressed by a small initial abundance of dark matter and consequently creating the observed abundance requires much larger coupling values than for the usual freeze-in. We provide a concrete example model exhibiting such production mechanism and study it in detail, extending the standard formalism to include the evolution of dark matter temperature alongside its number density and dis…
We reconsider thermal production of axinos in the early universe, adding: a) missed terms in the axino interaction; b) production via gluon decays kinematically allowed by thermal masses; c) a precise modeling of reheating. We find an axino abunance a few times larger than previous computations.
Hadronic showers transfer a relevant amount of their energy to electromagnetic subshowers. We show that the generation of "secondary" dark photons in these sub-showers is significant and typically dominates the production at low dark photon masses. The resulting dark photons are however substantially less energetic than the ones originating from mesons decay. We illustrate this point both semi-analytically and through Monte Carlo simulations. Existing limits on vector-mediator scenarios for light dark matter are updated with the inclusion of the new production processes.
We study the collider phenomenology of dark matter pair production at the LHC in simplified dark matter models and in the MSSM. Among the large space of dark matter models, we focus on two particular models where a fermionic dark matter candidate interacts with the Standard Model via the exchange of either a vector mediator in the s-channel or coloured scalar mediators in the t-channel. We find that the simplified models are capable of reproducing the predictions of the MSSM to some extent in simplified supersymmetric scenarios, but lack the complexity to descibe the complete theory over the f…
We perform a systematic analysis of dark matter production during post-inflationary reheating. Following the period of exponential expansion, the inflaton begins a period of damped oscillations as it decays. These oscillations and the evolution of temperature of the thermalized decay products depend on the shape of the inflaton potential $V(Φ)$. We consider potentials of the form $Φ^k$. Standard matter-dominated oscillations occur for $k=2$. In general, the production of dark matter may depend on either (or both) the maximum temperature after inflation, or the reheating temperature, where the …
We present a new mechanism to produce the dark photon ($γ'$) in the early universe with a help of the axion ($a$) using a recently proposed dark axion portal. The dark photon, a light gauge boson in the dark sector, can be a relic dark matter if its lifetime is long enough. The main process we consider is a variant of the Primakoff process $f a \to f γ'$ mediated by a photon, which is possible with the axion--photon--dark photon coupling. The axion is thermalized in the early universe because of the strong interaction and it can contribute to the non-thermal dark photon production through the …
Searches for dark matter production at particle colliders are complementary to direct-detection and indirect-detection experiments, and especially powerful for small masses, $m_χ<100$ GeV. An important collider dark matter signature is due to the production of a pair of these invisible particles with the initial-state radiation of a standard model particle. Currently, collider searches use individual and nearly orthogonal final states to search for initial-state jets, photons or massive gauge bosons. We combine these results across final states and across experiments to give the strongest curr…
Dark matter scenarios with spin-0 mediators in the $s$-channel have be tested in well-established processes with missing energy, such as top-pair- and mono-jet-associated production. We suggest electroweak single top production in association with a dark matter pair as an alternative channel. Based on a realistic analysis for the LHC at 13 TeV, we demonstrate how to efficiently discriminate between the signal and Standard-Model background using event kinematics. With $300\,\text{fb}^{-1}\,(3\,\text{ab}^{-1})$ of data luminosity, on-shell scalar mediators with a coupling strength $g_S^t=1$ to t…
We consider thermal production mechanisms of self-interacting dark matter in models with gauged $Z_3$ symmetry. A complex scalar dark matter is stabilized by the $Z_3$, that is the remnant of a local dark $U(1)_d$. Light dark matter with large self-interaction can be produced from thermal freeze-out in the presence of SM-annihilation, SIMP and/or forbidden channels. We show that dark photon and/or dark Higgs should be relatively light for unitarity and then assist the thermal freeze-out. We identify the constraints on the parameter space of dark matter self-interaction and mass in cases that o…
We respond to Robinson and Michaud's (RM) comment (arXiv:2002.08893) on our recent preprint arXiv:2002.06937, in which we discuss recent excesses in low-threshold dark matter searches, and offer a potential unifying dark matter interpretation. We thank RM for their feedback, which highlights the critical need for future measurements to directly calibrate plasmon charge yields for low $\sim$ 10 eV energy depositions. RM objected to our assertion that plasmons generated at energy scales below 100~eV may have a large branching fraction into phonons. As we argue below, the points raised by RM do n…
We discuss numerous mechanisms for production of sterile neutrinos, which can account for all or a fraction of dark matter, and which can range from warm to effectively cold dark matter, depending on the cosmological scenario. We investigate production by Higgs boson decay, $(B-L)$ gauge boson production at high temperature, as well as production via resonant and nonresonant neutrino oscillations. We calculate the effects on structure formation in these models, some for the first time. If two populations of sterile neutrinos, one warm and one cold, were produced by different mechanisms, or if …
Many scenarios beyond the standard model, aiming to solve long-standing cosmological and particle physics problems, suggest that dark matter might experience long-distance interactions mediated by an unbroken dark $U(1)$ gauge symmetry, hence foreseeing the existence of a massless dark photon. Contrary to the massive dark photon, a massless dark photon can only couple to the standard model sector by means of effective higher dimensional operators. Massless dark-photon production at colliders will then in general be suppressed at low energy by a UV energy scale, which is of the order of the mas…
We study the gravitational production of super-Hubble-mass dark matter in the very early universe. We first review the simplest scenario where dark matter is produced mainly during slow roll inflation. Then we move on to consider the cases where dark matter is produced during the transition period between inflation and the subsequent cosmological evolution. The limits of smooth and sudden transitions are studied, respectively. The relic abundances and the cosmological collider signals are calculated.
We consider the direct $s$-channel gravitational production of dark matter during the reheating process. Independent of the identity of the dark matter candidate or its non-gravitational interactions, the gravitational process is always present and provides a minimal production mechanism. During reheating, a thermal bath is quickly generated with a maximum temperature $T_{\rm max}$, and the temperature decreases as the inflaton continues to decay until the energy densities of radiation and inflaton oscillations are equal, at $T_{\rm RH}$. During these oscillations, $s$-channel gravitational pr…
We point out an earlier implementation of the "freeze-in" mechanism for the production of very weakly-interacting dark matter. We also clarify a footnote given in 0911.1120 regarding this eariler paper.
Dark sectors with purely gravitational couplings to the Standard Model are unavoidably populated from the SM plasma by graviton exchange, and naturally provide DM candidates. We examine the production in the relativistic regime where the dark sector is approximately scale invariant, providing general analytical formulas that depend solely on the central charge of the dark sector. We then assess the relevance of interactions that can lead to a variety of phenomena including thermalisation, nonperturbative mass gaps, out-of-equilibrium phase transitions and cannibalism in the dark sector. As an …
We compare dark matter production from the thermal bath in the early universe with its direct production through the decay of the inflaton. We show that even if dark matter does not possess a direct coupling with the inflaton, Standard Model loop processes may be sufficient to generate the correct relic abundance.
Assuming that dark matter particles interact with quarks via a GeV-scale mediator, we study dark matter production in fixed target collisions. The ensuing signal in a neutrino near detector consists of neutral-current events with an energy distribution peaked at higher values than the neutrino background. We find that for a $Z'$ boson of mass around a few GeV that decays to dark matter particles, the dark matter beam produced by the Main Injector at Fermilab allows the exploration of a range of values for the gauge coupling that currently satisfy all experimental constraints. The NO$ν$A detect…
Starting with the de Broglie--Proca Lagrangian for a massive vector field, we calculate the number density of particles resulting from gravitational particle production (GPP) during inflation, with detailed consideration to the evolution of the number density through the reheating. We find plausible scenarios for the production of dark-photon dark matter of mass in a wide range, as low as a micro-electron volt to $10^{14}$ GeV. Gravitational particle production does not depend on any coupling of the dark photon to standard-model particles.
Axions, the hypothetical particles restoring the charge-parity symmetry in the strong sector of the Standard Model, and one of the most prone candidates for dark matter, are well-known to interact with plasmas. In a recent publication [Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 120}, 181803 (2018)], we have shown that if the plasma dynamically responds to the presence of axions, then a new quasi-particle (the axion plasmon-polariton) can be formed, being at the basis of a new generation of plasma-based detection techniques. In this work, we exploit the axion-plasmon hybridization to actively produce axions in stre…
We discuss certain features of the low energy effective interactions of axion supermultiplet, which are relevant for axino cosmology, and examine the implication to thermal production of axino in the early Universe.
We present a new mechanism for generating the observed dark matter energy density, through resonant production of vector dark matter during inflation. Resonant amplification of the vector dark matter is achieved through Mathieu instabilities induced by an oscillatory coupling with the inflaton, which can occur as early as 11.9 e-folds before the end of inflation. Successful dark matter production is possible for a wide range of inflationary Hubble rates and vector mass scales. This scenario generates both helicity states of the vector dark matter density in contrast to other tachyonic producti…
In the framework of hypercolor scenario of multicomponent Dark Matter, inelastic interaction of high energy photons with the Dark Matter candidates is considered. This reaction results in production of energetic leptons and neutrinos, and the Dark Matter particles also can be boosted. Total and differential cross sections have been calculated. The search of correlations between detected signals of high-energy photons and neutrinos can give an information on the Dark Matter scenario and dynamics.
We study nonthermal production of baryon and dark matter. If we extend the MSSM by introducing some singlet chiral superfields so as to enlarge the conserved global symmetry, the abundance of the baryon and the dark matter in the universe may be explained as the charge asymmetry of that symmetry. In such a case, the baryon energy density and the dark matter energy density in the present universe can be correlated each other and take the similar order values naturally.
A concise summary of out-of-equilibrium dark matter production during post-inflationary reheating is presented. We show that the dark matter relic abundance is in general sensitive to the thermalization rate of the inflaton decay products, and the evolution of the temperature of the subsequently thermalized radiation. We discuss how smoking-gun signals, such as monochromatic neutrinos or gamma-ray lines, or Lyman-$α$ data, can help constrain out-of-equilibrium DM models.
The dark photon is a new gauge boson which arises from an extra U'(1) gauge symmetry. In this paper, a novel dark photon production mechanism based on MeV-scale $γ$-$γ$ collider is considered: $γγ\rightarrow γA'$. With the aid of PACKAGE-X, differential cross section of $γγ\rightarrow γA'$ is obtained, as a function of the kinetic mixing parameter $\varepsilon$ and dark photon mass $m_{A'}$. Taking the light-by-light scattering as background, the constraints on the dark photon parameter space for different time intervals in a MeV-scale $γ$-$γ$ collider are also given.
We reconsider non-thermal production of WIMP dark matter in a systematic way and using a numerical code for accurate computations of dark matter relic densities. Candidates with large pair annihilation rates are favored, suggesting a connection with the anomalies in the lepton cosmic-ray flux detected by Pamela and Fermi. Focussing on supersymmetric models we will consider the impact of non-thermal production on the preferred mass scale for dark matter neutralinos. We have also developed a new formalism to solve the Boltzmann's equation for a system of coannihilating species without assuming k…
We consider the production of dark matter in association with a pair of top quarks, mediated by a scalar or pseudoscalar particle in a generic Simplified Model. We demonstrate that the difference of azimuthal angle between the two leptons $Δϕ_{ll}$, in the dileptonic top decay mode, can directly probe the CP-properties of the mediator. We estimate the constraints to strength and CP-structure of dark matter production for these well-motivated Simplified Models from the LHC Run II.
We study the feebly interacting massive particle dark matter whose production processes are significantly affected by the phase evolution and the complicated thermal corrections to the vector boson. We calculate the freeze-in processes to obtain the correct dark matter relic density by enumerating all the possible $1 \leftrightarrow 2$ and $2 \leftrightarrow 2$ processes. The predicted gravitational waves emitted by the first-order phase transitions and the cosmic strings are evaluated.
We evaluate the prospects for finding evidence of dark matter production at the Large Hadron Collider. We consider WIMPs and superWIMPs, weakly- and superweakly-interacting massive particles, and characterize their properties through model-independent parameterizations. The observed relic density then implies lower bounds on dark matter production rates as functions of a few parameters. For WIMPs, the resulting signal is indistinguishable from background. For superWIMPs, however, this analysis implies significant production of metastable charged particles. For natural parameters, these rates m…
Associated production of a dark particle and a photon, represented as a mono-$γ$ event, is a promising channel to probe particle contents and dynamics in the dark sector. In this paper we study properties of the mono-$γ$ production of a vector dark matter at future $e^+e^-$ colliders. The photon-like and Pauli operators, as well as triple gauge bosons interactions involving the dark matter, are considered in the framework of Effective Field Theory. We show that, comparing to the Pauli operator, the triple gauge bosons couplings are much more interesting at high energy collider. Beam polarizati…

We will review the main aspects of a mechanism for the contemporary generation of the baryon and Dark Matter abundances from the out-of-equilibrium decay of a Wimp-like mother particle and briefly discuss a concrete realization in a Supersymmetric scenario.
