Electrical transport and specific heat properties of Nd_{1-x}Pb_{x}MnO_{3} single crystals for 0.15 < x 0.5 have been studied in low temperature regime. The resistivity in the ferromagnetic insulating (FMI) phase for x < 0.3 has an activated character. The dependence of the activation gap Delta on doping x has been determined and the critical concentration for the zero-temperature metal-insulator transition was determined as x_{c} ~ 0.33. For a metallic sample with x=0.42, a conventional electron-electron (e-e) scattering term proportional T^{2} is found in the low-temperature electrical resistivity, although the Kadowaki-Woods ratio is found to be much larger for this manganite than for a normal metal. For a metallic sample with x=0.5, a resistivity minimum is observed for x= 0.5. The effect is attributed to weak localization and can be described by a negative T^{1/2} weak-localization contribution to resistivity for a disordered three-dimensional electron system. The specific heat data have been fitted to contributions from free electrons (gamma), spin excitations (beta_{3/2}), lattice and a Schottky-like anomaly related to the rare-earth magnetism of the Nd ions. The value of gamma is larger than for normal metals, which is ascribed to magnetic ordering effects involving Nd. Also, the Schottky-like anomaly appears broadened and weakened suggesting inhomogeneous molecular fields at the Nd-sites.
We report low temperature specific heat measurements of Pr$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ ($0.3\leq x \leq 0.5$) and La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ with and without applied magnetic field. An excess specific heat, $C^{\prime}(T)$, of non-magnetic origin associated with charge ordering is found for all the samples. A magnetic field sufficient to induce the transition from the charge-ordered state to the ferromagnetic metallic state does not completely remove the $C^{\prime}$ contribution. This suggests that the charge ordering is not completely destroyed by a "melting" magnetic field. In addition, the…
Measurements of DC magnetization, AC susceptibility and Hall effect of $Pr_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_3$ single crystal are reported. The various features are discussed in terms of competing electronic and spin ordering phase transitions, in particular concerning the $e_g$ and $t_{2g}$ competition and its effect on spin ordering.
Single crystal growth of α-Na$_x$MnO$_2$ (x = 0.90) is reported via the floating zone technique. The conditions required for stable growth and intergrowth-free crystals are described along with the results of trials under alternate growth atmospheres. Chemical and structural characterizations of the resulting α-Na$_{0.90}$MnO$_2$ crystals are performed using ICP-AES, NMR, XANES, XPS, and neutron diffraction measurements. As a layered transition metal oxide with large ionic mobility and strong correlation effects, α-Na$_x$MnO$_2$ is of interest to many communities, and the implications of large…
We present a comprehensive analysis of Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction and crystal-field parameters using the angular dependence of the paramagnetic resonance shift and linewidth in single crystals of La_{0.95}Sr_{0.05}MnO_3 within the orthorhombic Jahn-Teller distorted phase. The Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction (~ 1K) results from the tilting of the MnO_6 octahedra against each other. The crystal-field parameters D and E are found to be of comparable magnitude (~ 1K) with D ~= -E. This indicates a strong mixing of the |3z^2-r^2> and |x^2-y^2> states for the real orbital configuration.
Measurements of thermal conductivity (kappa) vs temperature are reported for a series of Ca_{1-x} La_x MnO_3(0 <= x <= 0.2) specimens. For the undoped (x=0), G-type antiferromagnetic compound a large enhancement of kappa below the Neel temperature (T_N ~ 125 K) indicates a strong coupling of heat-carrying phonons to the spin system. This enhancement exhibits a nonmonotonic behavior with increasing x and correlates remarkably well with the small ferromagnetic component of the magnetization reported previously [Neumeier and Cohn, Phys. Rev. B 61 14319 (2000).] Magnetoelastic polaron formation ap…
We have investigated the dielectric properties of Gd$_{1-x}$Tb$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ crystals in magnetic fields to clarify the crossover between two distinct ferroelectric phases, GdMnO$_{3}$-type (first-order displacive) and TbMnO$_{3}$-type (second-order order-disorder). We have found that the compositional phase boundary between the phases exists around 0.3$<$$x$$<$0.4. For the $x$=0.1 sample exposed to magnetic fields above 3T, we have discovered successive ferroelectric phase transitions that occur at two different temperatures. We have determined the electric and magnetic phase diagram for $x$…
We have investigated the Mn-site substitution effect in Nd$_{0.45}$Sr$_{0.55}$MnO$_3$ single crystal, which has an $A$-type layered antiferromagnetic ($A$-AFM) phase with the 3$d_{x^2-y^2}$-type orbital-order. Substitution of Fe or Ga for Mn-site suppresses both the $A$-AFM order and competing ferromagnetic (FM) correlation whereas Cr substitution suppresses only the $A$-AFM order but reactivates the underlying FM correlation via double-exchange mechanism along the AFM coupled $c$-direction. In Nd$_{0.45}$Sr$_{0.55}$Mn$_{0.95}$Cr$_{0.05}$O$_3$, the $A$-AFM state with the orbital-order is chang…
We report a study on the crystal growth of the hexagonal manganites $R$MnO$_3$ ($R$ = Y, Lu, Ho, Er, and Tm) by using an optical floating-zone method. It was found that high-quality single crystals of $R$ = Y, Lu, and Ho could be easily grown with essentially the same conditions as those reported in literature, that is, with an atmosphere of normal pressure Ar and oxygen mixture and a growth rate of 2--4 mm/h. However, these conditions were not feasible for growing good crystals of $R$ = Er and Tm. The chemical analysis indicated that it was due to an off-stoichiometric phenomenon in the forme…
The structure of Nd$_{1-x}$Pb$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ crystals is determined by single crystal X-ray diffraction. Substitution of Pb at the Nd site results in structural phase change from tetragonal (x = 0.25) to cubic (x = 0.37). These changes are attributed to the progressive removal of inter-octahedral tilting and minimization of the octahedral distortion leading to a higher symmetry as doping concentration increases. While the unit cell volume of tetragonal structure ($\it{P4/mmm}$) is comparable to that of parent NdMnO$_{3}$, the volume of cubic unit cell ($\it{Pm\bar{3}m}$) is doubled. Electron d…
The infrared reflectivity of a $\rm La_{0.67}Ca_{0.33}MnO_3$ single crystal is studied over a broad range of temperatures (78-340 K), magnetic fields (0-16 T), and wavenumbers (20-9000 cm$^{-1}$). The optical conductivity gradually changes from a Drude-like behavior to a broad peak feature near 5000 cm$^{-1}$ in the ferromagnetic state below the Curie temperature $T_C=307 K$. Various features of the optical conductivity bear striking resemblance to recent theoretical predictions based on the interplay between the double exchange interaction and the Jahn-Teller electron-phonon coupling. A large…
We have established detailed magnetoelectric phase diagrams of (Eu$_{0.595}$Y$_{0.405}$)$_{1-x}$Tb$_x$MnO$_3$ ($0 \le x \le 1$) and (Eu,Y)$_{1-x}$Gd$_x$MnO$_3$ ($0 \le x \le 0.69$), whose average ionic radii of $R$-site ($R$: rare earth) cations are equal to that of Tb$^{3+}$, in order to reveal the effect of rare earth 4$f$ magnetic moments on the magnetoelectric properties. In spite of the same $R$-site ionic radii, the magnetoelectric properties of the two systems are remarkably different from each other. A small amount of Tb substitution on $R$ sites ($x \sim 0.2$) totally destroys ferroel…
We have investigated orthorhombic $R$MnO$_{3}$ ($R$=(Gd$_{1-y}$Tb$_{y}$)) crystals near the phase boundary between the paraelectric $A$-type-antiferromagnetic (AF) phase (PA) and the ferroelectric transverse-spiral-AF one (FS). The spiral AF structure breaks inversion symmetry and induces the ferroelectric polarization through the inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) interaction. We have found that the PA-FS phase boundary is located at around 0.15$<$$y$$<$0.2. In $y$=0.15 compound, PA and FS phases appear in cooling scan, while FS is not observed in warming scan. This result suggests that FS ob…
The crystal and magnetic structures of the specified CMR manganite system have been studied as a function of $y=(0.2-1)$ across the metal-insulator (MI) transition, and of the oxygen mass ($^{16}$O, $^{18}$O). We quantitatively show how the polaronic narrowing of the carrier bandwidth and the crystal lattice micro-strains control the volume fractions of the mesoscopic ferro- and antiferromagnetic clusters. A well-defined dip in the transition temperatures and the suppression of all the types of long range ordering seen near the MI-transition at $y\simeq0.9$ indicate a key role of the quenched …
We have investigated the role of the 4$f$ moment on the magnetoelectric (ME) effect of orthorhombic $R$MnO$_{3}$ ($R$=rare earth ions). In order to clarify the role of the 4$f$ moment, we prepared three samples: (Eu,Y)MnO$_{3}$ without the 4$f$ moment, TbMnO$_{3}$ with the anisotropic 4$f$ moment, and (Gd,Y)MnO$_{3}$ with the isotropic 4$f$ moment. The ferroelectric behaviors of these samples are different from each other in a zero magnetic field. (Eu,Y)MnO$_{3}$ and (Gd,Y)MnO$_{3}$ show the ferroelectric polarization along the a axis in the ground state, while TbMnO$_{3}$ shows it along the c…
We investigated temperature (T)- and magnetic field-dependent optical conductivity spectra (\s\w) of a La_5/8-yPr_yCa_3/8MnO_3 (y~0.35) single crystal, showing intriguing phase coexistence at low T. At T_C < T < T_CO, a dominant charge-ordered phase produces a large optical gap energy of ~0.4 eV. At T < T_C, at least two absorption bands newly emerge below 0.4 eV. Analyses of (\s\w) indicate that the new bands should be attributed to a ferromagnetic metallic and a charge-disordered phase that coexist with the charge-ordered phase. This optical study clearly shows that La_5/8-yPrCa_3/8MnO_3 (y~…
We have investigated the magnetic and dielectric properties of orthorhombic Eu$_{1-y}$Y$_y$MnO$_3$ ($0\leq y\leq 0.6$) single crystals without the presence of the 4$f$ magnetic moments of the rare-earth ions. In $y\geq 0.2$, the magnetic-structure driven ferroelectricity is observed. The ferroelectric transition temperature is steeply reducing with increasing $y$. In $y\geq 0.52$, two ferroelectric phases ($P\parallel a$ and $P\parallel c$) are coexistent at low temperatures. In these phases, ferroelectricity has different origin, which is evidenced by the distinctive poling-electric-field dep…
We have studied the chemical potential shift in La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) as a function of doped hole concentration by core-level x-ray photoemission. The shift is monotonous, which means that there is no electronic phase separation on a macroscopic scale, whereas it is consistent with the nano-meter scale cluster formation induced by chemical disorder. Comparison of the observed shift with the shift deduced from the electronic specific heat indicates that hole doping in La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) is well described by the rigid-band picture. In particular no mass enhancement toward the metal-insulator bounda…
Employing a broadband microwave reflection configuration, we have measured the complex surface impedance, $Z_S(ω,T)$, of single crystal La$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$MnO$_3$, as a function of frequency (0.045-45 GHz) and temperature (250-325 K). Through the dependence of the microwave surface impedance on the magnetic permeability, $\hatμ(ω,T)$, we have studied the local magnetic behavior of this material, and have extracted the spontaneous magnetization, $M_0(T)$, in {\em zero applied field}. The broadband nature of these measurements and the fact that no external field is applied to the material provi…
The low-doped magnetic perovskite La_{7/8}Sr_{1/8}MnO_3 undergoes within the paramagnetic-semiconducting phase a first-order structural transition due to antiferrodistorsive ordering of Jahn-Teller deformed MnO_6 octahedra. This allows to study not only the influence of the spin configuration on the magneto-transport properties (CMR effect) but also the role of orbital order and disorder. The orbital ordering transition (at 269 K in zero magnetic field) causes a doubling of the resistivity (regardless of the CMR effect in applied magnetic fields) and a drop of the paramagnetic susceptibility. …
We report the direct evidence of the possibility of charge segregation in manganites. The high contrast of electric-field-induced local charged states is observed during more than 100 hours at room temperature. These induced states display a piezoelectric response and polar properties. This effect may be an example of a new kind of polar ordering in solid state.
Single Crystals of Nd$_{1-x}$Ca$_{1+x}$MnO$_{4}$ have been prepared by the travelling floating-zone method, and possible evidence of a charge -orbital density wave in this material presented earlier [PRB68,092405 (2003)] using High Resolution Electron Microscopy [HRTEM] and Electron Diffraction [ED]. In the current note we present direct evidence of charge-orbital ordering in this material using heat capacity measurements. Our heat capacity measurements indicate a clear transition consistent with prior observation. We find two main transitions, one at temperature $T_{_H}=310-314$ K, and other …
We report on detailed transprort measurements of single crystalline La(1-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) (x<=0.2). We have found a giantpositive magnetoresistance in the compositions range between 0.1<=x<=0.125 and give an explaination in terms of orbital ordering due to the interplay between superexchange interactions and Jahn-Teller distortions.
A sensitive tunnel diode oscillator (TDO) operating at 4MHz is used to probe the dynamic response of La_{1-x}Sr_{x}MnO_{3} single crystals for x=0.125,0.175,0.28 and 0.33 doping. Systematics of the measured change in reactance as a function of temperature (30K<T<320K) and DC magnetic field (0<H<6kOe) reveal distinct temperature and field scales associated with the dynamic response of spin. It is notable that these features are far more striking than the corresponding features in static measurements. The results are discussed in the context of structural changes leading to polaron ordering.
We have systematically investigated the magnetic properties and magnetocaloric effect (MCE) in $R$MnO$_3$ ($R$$=$Dy, Tb, Ho and Yb) single crystals. Above a critical value of applied field ($H_c$), $R$MnO$_3$ undergo a first-order antiferromagnetic (AFM) to ferromagnetic (FM) transition below the ordering temperature ($T_{N}^{R}$) of $R^{3+}$ moment and a second-order FM to paramagnetic (PM) transition above $T_{N}^{R}$. Both $H$ and $T$ dependence of $M$ shows that the system is highly anisotropic in the FM as well as PM states and, as a result, the magnetic entropy change ($ΔS_{M}$) is extre…
In this letter we report that the current induced destabilization of the charge ordered (CO) state in a rare-earth manganite gives rise to regions with ferromagnetic correlation. We did this experiment by measurement of the I-V curves in single crystal of the CO system Pr$_{0.63}$Ca$_{0.37}$MnO$_{3}$ and simultanously measuring the magnetization of the current carrying conductor using a high T$_c$ SQUID working at T = 77K. We have found that the current induced destabilization of the CO state leads to a regime of negative differential resistance which leads to a small enhancement of the magnet…
The nature of the phase transitions in La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$ and Pr$_{0.48}$Ca$_{0.52}$MnO$_3$ has been probed using heat capacity and magnetisation measurements. The phase transition associated with the onset of the stripe phase has been identified as second order. The model of a Peierls transition in a disordered system (a `dirty' Peierls transition) is shown to provide an extremely good fit to this transition. In addition, an unexpected magnetic phase has been revealed in low temperature Pr$_{0.48}$Ca$_{0.52}$MnO$_3$, associated with an excess heat capacity over a wide temperature range c…
We have carried out high magnetic field studies of single-crystalline Li$_2$MnO$_3$, a honeycomb lattice antiferromagnet. Its magnetic phase diagram was mapped out using magnetization measurements at applied fields up to 35 T. Our results show that it undergoes two successive meta-magnetic transitions around 9 T fields applied perpendicular to the ab-plane (along the c*-axis). These phase transitions are completely absent in the magnetization measured with field applied along the ab-plane. In order to understand this magnetic phase diagram, we developed a mean-field model starting from the cor…
We report the first electron paramagnetic resonance studies of single crystals and powders of Pr_{0.6}Ca_{0.4}MnO_{3} in the 300-4.2 K range, covering the charge ordering transition at ~ 240 K and antiferromagnetic transition (T_N) at ~ 170 K. The asymmetry parameter for the Dysonian single crystal spectra shows anomalous increase at T_{co}. Below T_{co} the g-value increases continuously, suggesting a gradual strengthening of orbital ordering. The linewidth undergoes a sudden increase at T_{co} and continues to increase down to T_N. The intensity increases as the temperature is decreased till…
Colossal electroresistance (CER) has been observed in the ferromagnetic insulating (FMI) state of a manganite. Notably, the CER in the FMI state occurs in the absence of magnetoresistance (MR). Measurements of electroresistance (ER) and current induced resistivity switching have been performed in the ferromagnetic insulating state of a single crystal manganite of composition Nd$_0.7$Pb$_0.3$MnO$_3$ (NPMO30). The sample has a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic (Curie) transition temperature, Tc = 150 K and the ferromagnetic insulating state is realized for temperatures, T <~ 130 K. The colossal elec…
The short ranged magnetic correlations and dynamics of hole doped $Pr_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3}$ (0.33 < x < 0.5) of different crystallite sizes have been investigated using electron spin resonance spectroscopy (ESR). The major contribution to the temperature dependence of paramagnetic line-width is attributed to the spin-lattice relaxation dominated by thermally activated hopping of small polarons with typical activation energy of 20-50 meV. Irrespective of the crystallite size and dopant concentration, the transverse spin relaxation time ($t_{2}$) follows a universal scaling behaviour of the type $…
We report measurements and analysis of the magnetic critical phenomena in a single crystal of La${_{0.875}}$Sr${_{0.125}}$MnO${_3}$. The critical exponents associated with the ferromagnetic transition have been determined from ac susceptibility and dc magnetisation data. Techniques like the Kouvel$-$Fischer plots, modified Arrots Plots and the critical isotherm analysis were used for this purpose. The values of the the exponents $γ$, $β$ and $δ$ obtained are found to match very well with those predicted for the 3D Heisenberg model. Our results are consistent with recent numerical calculations …
The paper describes a study of the magnetic, transport and magnetoresistive properties of La_{1-x}Ca_{x}MnO_{3} (x\approx 0.33) crystals prepared by the floating-zone method. We found that these properties testify to rather good crystal perfection of the sample studied. In particular, a huge magnetoresistance ([R(0)-R(H)]/R(H) in the field H = 5 T is about 2680 %) is found near the Curie temperature (216 K). At the same time, some distinct features of measured properties indicate the influence of extrinsic inhomogeneities arising due to technological factors in the sample preparation. Analysis…
We present the results of a study of specific heat on a single crystal of Pr$_{0.63}$Ca$_{0.37}$MnO$_3$ performed over a temperature range 3K-300K in presence of 0 and 8T magnetic fields. An estimate of the entropy and latent heat in a magnetic field at the first order charge ordering (CO) transition is presented. The total entropy change at the CO transition which is $\approx$ 1.8 J/mol K at 0T, decreases to $\sim$ 1.5 J/mol K in presence of 8T magnetic field. Our measurements enable us to estimate the latent heat $L_{CO}$ $\approx$ 235 J/mol involved in the CO transition. Since the entropy o…
We report on Raman scattering measurements of single crystalline La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$MnO$_3$ ($x$=0, 0.06, 0.09 and 0.125), focusing on the high frequency regime. We observe multi-phonon scattering processes up to fourth-order which show distinct features: (i) anomalies in peak energy and its relative intensity and (ii) a pronounced temperature-, polarization-, and doping-dependence. These features suggest a mixed orbiton-phonon nature of the observed multi-phonon Raman spectra.
A field-induced crossover is observed in the resistivity and magnetization (M) of a La(0.7)Pb(0.3)MnO(3) single crystal. The field-dependence of the resistivity and M suggests that a small spin-canted species with mean-field-like interactions dominates at low fields (H), whereas, individual spins and 3D Ising/Heisenberg models describe the high-H behavior rather well. Around the ferromagnetic transition, an H-induced destruction of the small spin-canted magnetic polarons is accompanied by large magnetoresistance.
Single crystalline (Bi,Ca)MnO3 (74< %Ca <82) were studied with neutron scattering, electron diffraction and bulk magnetic measurement. We discovered dynamic ferromagnetic spin correlations at high temperatures, which are replaced by antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations at a concomitant charge ordering and structural transition. Our results indicate that thermal-activated hopping of the Jahn-Teller active e_g electrons in these insulating materials, nevertheless, induce ferromagnetic interaction through double-exchange mechanism. It is the ordering of these charges competing with the double-exch…
The resistivity in the ferromagnetic state of flux-grown La_{2/3}(Pb,Ca)_{1/3}MnO_3 single crystals, measured in magnetic fields up to 7 T, reveals a strong quadratic temperature dependence at and above 50 K. At lower temperatures, this contribution drops precipitously leaving the resistivity essentially temperature independent below 20 K. The Seebeck coefficient also reflects a change of regime at the same temperature. We attribute this behavior to a cut-off of single magnon scattering processes at long wavelengths due to the polarized bands of a double-exchange ferromagnet.
Low frequency noise in current biased La$_{0.82}$Ca$_{0.18}$MnO$_{3}$ single crystals has been investigated in a wide temperature range from 79 K to 290 K. Despite pronounced changes in magnetic properties and dissipation mechanisms of the sample with changing temperature, the noise spectra were found to be always of the 1/f type and their intensity (except the lowest temperature studied) scaled as a square of the bias. At liquid nitrogen temperatures and under bias exceeding some threshold value, the behavior of the noise deviates from the quasi-equilibrium modulation noise and starts to depe…
The spin and quasiparticle relaxation dynamics in La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ and LaMnO$_{3}$ single crystals and thin films is investigated as a function of temperature and magnetic field by pump-probe spectroscopy. The unusually slow spin-lattice relaxation dynamics is governed by the temperature- and magnetic field- dependent pseudogap in La$_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$, and by the temperature-independent Jahn-Teller gap in LaMnO$_{3}$. Our results show that the coupled dynamics of charge, spin and lattice is strongly correlated with the distinct gap structures in these manganites.
Ba4NbMn3O12 is reported, synthesized by a solid state method in air. The crystal structure, determined by performing refinements on room temperature powder X-ray diffraction data by the Rietveld method, consists of Mn3O12 trimers in the configuration of three face-sharing MnO6 octahedra, with the trimers arranged in triangular planes. An effective moment of 4.82 μB/f.u is observed and competing antiferromagnetic and ferromagnetic interactions between Mn ions are inferred from the Weiss temperature of -4 K and the ferrimagnetic ordering transition of approximately 42 K. Ba4NbMn3O12 is a semicon…
Single Crystals of Nd$_{1-x}$Ca$_{1+x}$MnO$_{4}$ have been prepared by the traveling floating-zone method, and possible evidence of a charge -orbital density wave in this material presented earlier [PRB68,092405 (2003)] using High Resolution Electron Microscopy [HRTEM] and Electron Diffraction [ED]. In the current note we present direct evidence of charge-orbital ordering in this material using heat capacity measurements. Our heat capacity measurements indicate a clear transition consistent with prior observation. We find two main transitions, one at temperature $T_{_H}^{HC}=310-314$ K, and ot…
We report on DC and pulsed electric field sensitivity of the resistance of mixed valent Mn oxide based La(5/8-y)Pr(y)Ca(3/8)MnO(3) (y = 0.4) single crystals as a function of temperature. The low temperature regime of the resistivity is highly current and voltage dependent. An irreversible transition from high (HR) to a low resistivity (LR) is obtained upon the increase of the electric field up to a temperature dependent critical value (V_c). The current-voltage characteristics in the LR regime as well as the lack of a variation in the magnetization response when V_c is reached indicate the for…
Thin films of Pr0.5Ca0.5MnO3 manganites exhibiting charge/orbital-ordered properties with colossal magnetoresistance have been synthesized by the pulsed laser deposition technique on both (100)-SrTiO3 and (100)-LaAlO3 substrates. The effects of current-induced metallic-behavior of the films are investigated as a function of the temperature and the magnetic field. Calculations based on a heat transfer model across the substrate, and our resistivity measurements reveal effects of Joule heating on charge transport over certain ranges of temperatures and magnetic fields. Our results also indicate …
We studied the crystal and magnetic structure of the La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ compound for $x=0.8$ and $x=0.85$. At T=300 K both samples are paramagnetic with crystallographic symmetry $Pnma$. At low temperatures they undergo a monoclinic distortion from orthorhombic $Pnma$-type structure with $a_p\sqrt{2}\times 2a_p\times a_p\sqrt{2}$ to a monoclinic structure with ($a_p\sqrt{2}\times 2a_p\times a_p\sqrt{2}$, $β=90+ε\sim 91.4^{\rm o}$) and $P2_1/m$ space group below $T_N$. The onset of the structural transformation coincides with the development of the $C$-type long range antiferromagnetic…
Conductivity noise in dc current biased La_{0.82}Ca_{0.18}MnO_{3} single crystals has been investigated in different metastable resistivity states enforced by applying voltage pulses to the sample at low temperatures. Noise measured in all investigated resistivity states is of 1/f-type and its intensity at high temperatures and low dc bias scales as a square of the bias. At liquid nitrogen temperatures for under bias exceeding a threshold value, the behavior of the noise deviates from above quasi- equilibrium modulation noise and depends in a non monotonic way on applied bias. The bias range o…
The ultrasonic properties of La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ ($x\approx 0.25$) with the Curie temperature $T_C$ about 200 K are studied. Temperature dependences of longitudinal and transverse sound velocities were measured in zero magnetic field and for different constant magnetic fields as well. The ultrasonic study is supported by magnetic, resistive, magnetoresistive, structural and other measurements of the sample that facilitate interpretation of the results obtained. The magnetic field influence on sound properties found in this study presents some new features of the interplay between the e…
X-Ray diffraction, ac susceptibility and electrical resistivity measurements were performed in order to investigate the effect of Ag substitution for Pr in the polycrystalline Pr$_{1-x}$Ag$_x$MnO$_3$ (0.0$\leq$x$\leq$0.25) manganites. The XRD results show that the samples crystallize in the O'-orthorhombic structure with a cooperative Jahn-Teller deformation. We give evidence that the Ag$^{+}$ is not substituted at the Pr$^{3+}$ site in the PrMnO$_{3}$ structure. The increase of $T_{C}$ up to 130 K is suggested to be due to further oxidation of manganite grains by the oxygen released from the …
We studied the crystal and magnetic structure of the La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ compound for $(0.11\leq x\leq 0.175)$ using stoichiometric samples. For $x<0.13$ the system's ground state is insulating canted antiferromagnetic. For $0.13\le x \le 0.175$ e below the Jahn Teller transition temperature ($T_{\rm JT}$) the crystal structure undergoes a monoclinic distortion. The crystal structure can be described with $P 2_1/c$ space group which permits two Mn sites. The unit cell strain parameter $s=2(a-c)/(a+c)$ increases for $T<T_{\rm JT}$, taking the maximum value at the Curie point, and then d…
We report a study of oxygen isotope effects on low temperature specific heat, magnetization, and resistivity of La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ and (La$_{1-y}$Pr$_{y})_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$. For the metallic compositions of La$_{1-x}$Ca$_{x}$MnO$_{3}$ and for charge-ordered La$_{0.5}$Ca$_{0.5}$MnO$_{3}$ no change in low temperature specific heat has been detected with $^{16}$O -$^{18}$O exchange, while compounds of (La$_{1-y}$Pr$_{y})_{0.67}$Ca$_{0.33}$MnO$_{3}$ (0.4<y<0.6) show a significant change in low temperature properties. The low temperature specific heat indicates a presence of the …
In order to study the magnetic and crystal structures in the Nd{1-x}Sr{x}MnO{3} system, we have peformed neutron diffraction measurements on melt-grown polycrystalline samples with 0.49 < x < 0.75. As a function of hole concentration x, the system shows systematic transformation of magnetic and crystal structures, which is consistently explained by the change of the character of Mn eg orbitals. With increasing x, the Nd{1-x}Sr{x}MnO{3} system exhibits a metallic ferromagnetic state, a metallic A-type AFM state, and then an insulating C-type AFM state. The CE-type charge-ordered AFM state was o…
Employing a broadband microwave reflection configuration, we have measured the complex surface impedance, $Z_S(ω,T,H)$, of single crystal La$_{0.8}$Sr$_{0.2}$MnO$_3$, as a function of frequency (0.045-45 GHz), temperature (250-325 K), and magnetic field (0-1.9 kOe). The microwave surface impedance depends not only on the resistivity of the material, but also on the magnetic permeability, $\hatμ(ω,T,H)$, which gives rise to ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) and ferromagnetic anti-resonance (FMAR). The broadband nature of this experiment allows us to follow the FMR to low frequency and to deduce the…
Hexagonal RMnO3 is a multiferroic compound with a giant spin-lattice coupling at an antiferromagnetic transition temperature [1]. Despite extensive studies over the past two decades, however, the origin and underlying microscopic mechanism of the strong spin-lattice coupling remain still very much elusive. In this study, we have tried to address this problem by measuring the thermal expansion and dielectric constant of doped single crystals Y1-xLuxMnO3 with x = 0, 0.25, 0.5, 0.75, and 1.0. From these measurements, we confirm that there is a progressive change in the physical properties with do…
We probe spin transport in Cu_{2}O by measuring spin valve effect in La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}/Cu_{2}O/Co and La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}/Cu_{2}O/La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3} epitaxial heterostructures. In La_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_{3}/Cu_{2}O/Co systems we find that a fraction of out-of-equilibrium spin polarized carrier actually travel across the Cu_{2}O layer up to distances of almost 100 nm at low temperature. The corresponding spin diffusion length dspin is estimated around 40 nm. Furthermore, we find that the insertion of a SrTiO_{3} tunneling barrier does not improve spin injection, likely due to the ma…
Among colossal magnetoresistive manganites the prototypical ferromagnetic manganite La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ has a relatively small magnetoresistance, and has been long assumed to have only weak electron-lattice coupling. Here we report that La$_{0.7}$Sr$_{0.3}$MnO$_{3}$ has strong electron-phonon coupling: Our neutron and x-ray scattering experiments show strong softening and broadening of transverse acoustic phonons on heating through the Curie temperature T$_C$ = 350 K. Simultaneously, we observe two phases where metallic resistivity and polarons coexist. The ferromagnetic polaronic me…
The effect of doping on the electronic structure at the Mn sites in the La_{1-x}Sr_{1+x}MnO_4 series (x=0, 0.3 and 0.5) was studied by means of non-resonant hard X- ray emission spectroscopy (XES). We observe a linear dichroism in the Mn K-beta main lines (3p to 1s transitions) that is strongest for x=0 and decreases with increasing x to 0.5. The Mn K-beta main lines in the poly-crystalline samples change considerably less upon increasing the hole doping (substitution of La by Sr) than it would be expected based on the change of formal valence. From this we conclude that the charge and spin de…
Polycrystalline La$_{2/3}$Sr$_{1/3}$MnO$_{3}$ (LSMO) thin films were synthesized by pulsed laser ablation on single crystal (100) yttria-stabilized zirconia (YSZ) substrates to investigate the mechanism of magneto-transport in a granular manganite. Different degrees of granularity is achieved by using the deposition temperature (T$_{D}$) of 700 and 800 $^{0}$C. Although no significant change in magnetic order temperature (T$_C$) and saturation magnetization is seen for these two types of films, the temperature and magnetic field dependence of their resistivity ($ρ$(T, H)) is strikingly dissimi…
Here, we study an interface induced magnetic properties in 3$d$-5$d$ based multilayer made of La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ and double perovskite Sr$_2$FeIrO$_6$, respectively. Bulk La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO$_3$ is metallic and shows ferromagnetic (FM) ordering above room temperature. In contrast, bulk Sr$_2$FeIrO$_6$, is an antiferromagnet (AFM) with N$\acute{e}$el temperature around 45 K ($T_N$) and exhibits an insulating behavior. Two set of multilayers have been grown on SrTiO$_3$ (100) crystal with varying thickness of FM layer. multilayer with equal thickness of La$_{0.67}$Sr$_{0.33}$MnO…
We report results of magnetization and ac susceptibility measurements down to very low fields on a single crystal of the perovskite manganite, La$_{0.82}$Ca$_{0.18}$MnO$_3$. This composition falls in the intriguing ferromagnetic insulator region of the manganite phase diagram. In contrast to earlier beliefs, our investigations reveal that the system is magnetically (and in every other sense) single-phase with a ferromagnetic ordering temperature of $\sim$ 170 K. However, this ferromagnetic state is magnetically frustrated, and the system exhibits pronounced glassy dynamics below 90 K. Based on…
Structural, magnetic and multiferroic properties of single crystals of Dy$_{1-x}$Ho$_x$MnO$_3$ ($x = 0, 0.2$) were investigated by the different methods of polarized and classical neutron diffraction and macroscopic methods in order to determine the effect of Ho doping on the magneto-electric behavior of the title compounds. It is shown that substitution by Ho of 20% on the position of Dy do not change overall crystal symmetry of compound. It remains of Pnma type for both compositions down to the very low temperatures. Magnetic ordering do not change the crystal structure. Precise magnetic ord…
Evolution of the average and local crystal structure of Ca-doped LaMnO$_{3}$ has been studied across the metal to insulator (MI) and the orthorhombic to rhombohedral (OR) structural phase transitions over a broad temperature range for two Ca concentrations ($x = 0.18; 0.22$). Combined Rietveld and high real space resolution atomic pair distribution function (PDF) analysis of neutron total scattering data was carried out with aims of exploring the possibility of nanoscale phase separation (PS) in relation to MI transition, and charting the evolution of local Jahn-Teller (JT) distortion of MnO$_…
