In an attenuated total reflection (ATR) geometry, energy extracted from an incident light beam by surface plasmon polariton (SPP) creation is implicitly considered to dissipate as heat. However, we show that a sharpened tip interacting with the SPP evanescent field can redirect some of the energy before such dissipation occurs. This behavior is examined with simple computer simulations and an analogy is drawn between it and a modified Mach-Zehnder interferometer. We also discuss "interaction-free" measurements with our set-up.
We report the results of theoretical and experimental studies of photoluminescence of silicon nanocrystals in the proximity of plasmonic modes of different types. In our samples, the type of plasmonic mode is determined by the filling ratio of a one-dimensional gold grating which covers the thin film with silicon nanocrystals on a quartz substrate. We analyze the extinction and photoluminesce spectra of silicon nanocrystals and show that the emitted light is coupled to the corresponding plasmonic mode. We also demonstrate the modification of the extinction and photoluminesce spectra under the …
When circularly polarized light interacts with a nanostructure, the optical response depends on the geometry of the structure. If the nanostructure is chiral (i.e., it cannot be superimposed on its mirror image), then its optical response, both in near-field and far-field, depends on the handedness of the incident light. In contrast, achiral structures exhibit identical far-field responses for left- and right-circular polarization. Here, we show that a perfectly achiral nanostructure, a plasmonic metamolecule with trigonal D3h symmetry, exhibits a near-field response that is sensitive to the h…
Fano resonance in plasmonic oligomers originating from the interference of a spectrally broad superradiant mode and a discrete subradiant mode is under intensive recent investigations due to numerous potential applications. In this regard, development of experimental means to understand and control the complex Fano interference process and to modulate the resulting asymmetric Fano spectral line shape is highly sought after. Here we present a polarization Mueller matrix measurement and inverse analysis approach for quantitative understanding and interpretation of the complex interference proces…
Interference between light waves is one of the widely known phenomena in physics, which is widely used in modern optics, ranging from precise detection at the nanoscale to gravitational-wave observation. Akin to light, both classical and quantum interferences between surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) have been demonstrated. However, to actively control the SPP interference within subcycle in time (usually less than several femtoseconds in the visible range) is still missing, which hinders the ultimate manipulation of SPP interference on ultrafast time scale. In this paper, the interference bet…
Plasmonic cavities can be used to control the atom-photon coupling process at the nanoscale, since they provide ultrahigh density of optical states in an exceptionally small mode volume. Here we demonstrate strong coupling between molecular excitons and plasmonic resonances (so-called plexcitonic coupling) in a film-coupled nanocube cavity, which can induce profound and significant spectral and spatial modifications to the plasmonic gap modes. Within the spectral span of a single gap mode in the nanotube-film cavity with a 3-nm wide gap, the introduction of narrow-band J-aggregate dye molecule…
We present a simple yet elegant Mueller matrix approach for controlling the Fano interference effect and engineering the resulting asymmetric spectral line shape in anisotropic optical system. The approach is founded on a generalized model of anisotropic Fano resonance, which relates the spectral asymmetry to two physically meaningful and experimentally accessible parameters of interference, namely, the Fano phase shift and the relative amplitudes of the interfering modes. The differences in these parameters between orthogonal linear polarizations in an anisotropic system are exploited to desi…
We present a microscopic model describing the transition to strong coupling regime for an emitter resonantly coupled to a surface plasmon in a metal-dielectric structure. We demonstrate that the shape of scattering spectra is determined by an interplay of two distinct mechanisms. First is the near-field coupling between the emitter and the plasmon mode which underpins energy exchange between the system components and gives rise to exciton-induced transparency minimum in scattering spectra prior the transition to strong coupling regime. The second mechanism is Fano interference between the plas…
Optical binding allows creation of mechanically stable nanoparticle configurations owing to formation of self-consistent optical trapping potentials. While the classical diffraction limit prevents achieving deeply subwavelength arrangements, auxiliary nanostructures enable tailoring optical forces via additional interaction channels. Here, a dimer configuration next to metal surface was analyzed in details and the contribution of surface plasmon polariton waves was found to govern the interaction dynamics. It was shown that the interaction channel, mediated by resonant surface waves, enables a…
The influence of the film thickness and the substrate's refractive index on the surface mode at the superstrate is an important study step that may help clearing some of the misunderstandings surrounding their propagation mechanism. A single sub-wavelength slit perforating a thin metallic film is among the simplest nanostructure capable of launching Surface Plasmon Polaritons on its surrounding surface when excited by an incident field. Here, the impact of the substrate and the film thickness on surface waves is investigated. When the thickness of the film is comparable to its skin depth, SPP …
Surface plasma waves are collective oscillations of electrons that propagate along a metal-dielectric interface. In the last ten years, several groups have reproduced fundamental quantum optics experiments with surface plasmons. Observation of single-plasmon states, waveparticle duality, preservation of entanglement of photons in plasmon-assisted transmission, and more recently, two-plasmon interference have been reported. While losses are detrimental for the observation of squeezed states, they can be seen as a new degree of freedom in the design of plasmonic devices, thus revealing new quant…
We theoretically study the electromagnetic energy transfer between donor and acceptor molecules near a graphene waveguide. The surface plasmons (SPs) supported by the structure provide decay channels which lead to an improvement in the energy transfer rate when the donor and acceptor are localized on the same side or even on opposite sides of the waveguide. The modification of the energy transfer rate compared to its value in absence of the waveguide are calculated by deforming the integration path into a suitable path in the complex plane. Our results show that this modification is dramatical…
A terahertz metamaterial consisting of radiative slot antennas and subradiant complementary split-ring resonators exhibits plasmon induced opacity in a narrow spectral range due to the destructive interference between the bright and dark modes of the coupled oscillators. Femtosecond optical excitations instantly quench the mode coupling and plasmon oscillations, injecting photocarriers into the metamaterial. The plasmon resonances in the coupled metamaterial are transiently restored by intense terahertz pulses. The strong terahertz fields induce intervalley scattering and interband tunneling o…
We have studied the dependence of the rotation angle and ellipticity on the sample orientation and incident polarization from metallic nanohole arrays. The arrays have four-fold symmetry and thus do not possess any intrinsic chirality. We elucidate the role of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in determining the extrinsic chirality and we verify the results by using finite-difference time-domain simulation. Our results have indicated the outgoing reflection arises from the interference between the nonresonant background, which preserves the input polarization, and the SPP radiation damping, wh…
We propose a scheme to obtain a low-loss propagation of Airy surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) along the interface between a dielectric and a negative-index metamaterial (NIMM). We show that, by using the transverse-magnetic mode and the related destructive interference effect between electric and magnetic absorption responses, the propagation loss of the Airy SPPs can be largely suppressed when the optical frequency is close to the lossless point of the NIMM. As a result, the Airy SPPs obtained in our scheme can propagate more than 6-time long distance than that in conventional dielectric-met…
Optical skyrmions have recently been constructed by tailoring electric or spin field distributions through the interference of multiple surface plasmon polaritons, offering promising features for advanced information processing, transport and storage. Here, we construct topologically robust plasmonic skyrmions in a wisely tailored space-coiling meta-structure supporting magnetic localized spoof plasmons (LSPs), which are strongly squeezed down to λ3/106 and do not require stringent external interference conditions. By directly measuring the spatial profile of all three vectorial magnetic field…
We report observation of graphene plasmon interference fringes across a wide spectral range using a scattering scanning near-field optical microscope (s-SNOM) that employs a widely tunable bank of quantum cascade lasers. We use plasmon interference to measure the dispersion curve of graphene plasmons over more than an order of magnitude of plasmon wavelength, from $λ_{sp}$ ~140 to ~1700 nm, and extract the electron Fermi energy of 298$\pm$4 meV for hydrogen-intercalated single layer epitaxial graphene on SiC. Furthermore, we demonstrate the appearance of wavelength tuneable graphene plasmon re…
Surface plasmon resonances, the coherent oscillation of free electrons, can concentrate incident field into small volumes much smaller than the incident wavelength. The intense fields at these \textit{hot spots} enhance the light-matter interactions and may lead to the appearance of nonlinearity. Controlling such nonlinearities is significant for various practical applications. Here we report that by coupling dark modes to the first and the generated second harmonic modes separately, one can gain control over both fields. We find that by engineering path interferences (Fano resonances) between…
High-energy (1-100 keV) electrons can coherently couple to plasmonic and dielectric nanostructures creating cathodoluminescence (CL) of which the spectral features reveal details of the material's resonant modes at deep-subwavelength spatial resolution. While CL provides fundamental insight in optical modes, detecting its phase has remained elusive. Here, we introduce Fourier-transform CL holography as a method to determine the far-field phase distribution of scattered plasmonic fields. We record far-field interferences between a transition radiation reference field and surface plasmons scatte…
Spontaneous emission of quantum emitters can be modified by engineering their optical environment. This allows a resonant nanoantenna to significantly modify the radiative properties of a quantum emitter. In this article, we go beyond the common electric dipole approximation for the molecular electronic transition and take light-matter coupling through higher order multipoles into account. We investigate, by means of theory and numerical simulations, a strong enhancement of the magnetic dipole and electric quadrupole emission channels of a molecule adjacent to a plasmonic patch nanoantenna. Wh…
Label free tracking of small bio-particles such as proteins or viruses is of great utility in the study of biological processes, however such experiments are frequently hindered by weak signal strengths and a susceptibility to scattering impurities. To overcome these problems we here propose a novel technique leveraging the enhanced sensitivity of both interferometric detection and the strong field confinement of surface plasmons. Specifically, we show that interference between the field scattered by an analyte particle and a speckle reference field, derived from random scattering of surface p…
Polaritons can provide strong optical field enhancement allowing to boost light-matter interaction. Here, we experimentally observe enhancement of mid-infrared second-harmonic generation (SHG) using grating-coupled surface phonon polaritons of the 6H-SiC surface. In our experiment, we measure the SHG along the polariton dispersion by changing the incidence angle of the excitation beam. We observe hybridization between the propagating surface phonon polaritons and localized plasmon resonances in the gold grating, evidenced by the modification of the polariton dispersion as we change the area ra…
