In a previous paper we proposed a modification of metal-coated tapered-fibre aperture probes for scanning near-field optical microscopes. The modification consists of radial corrugations of the metal-dielectric interface oriented inward the core. Their purpose is to facilitate the excitation of propagating surface plasmons, which increase the transport of energy beyond the cut-off diameter and radiate a quasi-dipolar field from the probe output rim. An increase in energy output allows for reduction of the apex diameter, which is the main factor determining the resolution of the microscope. In FDTD simulations we analyse the performance of the new type to SNOM probe. We aim at achieving of maximum energy throughput in probes with corrugations that may be realized in a glass etching process.
We propose a novel method for ultra-sensitive infrared (IR) vibrational spectroscopy of molecules with nanoscale footprints by combining the tip enhancement of the scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscope (s-SNOM) and the plasmon enhancement of the breathing-mode (BM) plasmon resonances of graphene nanodisks (GNDs). To demonstrate that, we developed a quantitative model that is capable of computing accurately the s-SNOM signals of nanoscale samples. With our modeling, we show that the s-SNOM tip can effectively excite gate-tunable BM plasmonic resonances in GNDs with strong field…
In this letter we show how the dispersion relation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) propagating along a perfectly conducting wire can be tailored by corrugating its surface with a periodic array of radial grooves. In this way, highly localized SPPs can be sustained in the terahertz region of the electromagnetic spectrum. Importantly, the propagation characteristics of these spoof SPPs can be controlled by the surface geometry, opening the way to important applications such as energy concentration on cylindrical wires and superfocusing using conical structures.
In this paper, we utilize coupled mode theory (CMT) to model the coupling of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) between tri-layered corrugated thin films (CTF) structure coupler in the terahertz region. Employing the stimulated raman adiabatic passage (STIRAP) quantum control technique, we propose a novel directional coupler based on SPPs evolution in tri-layered CTF in some curved configuration. Our calculated results show that the SPPs can be completely transferred from the input to the output CTF waveguides, and even we consider SPPs propagation loss, the transfer rate is still above 70%. Th…
The construction of the unconditionally stable planar rank 2 scattering matrix for stratified systems is detailed from Fresnel equations. Several matrix decompositions and numerical calculations performed on the planar S matrix allow for the expedient characterization of purely absorbing, brewster, surface plasmon, and wave-guide modes. A figure of merit is presented from the decompositions of the scattering matrix constructed from the Chandezon method for corrugated surfaces. This figure of merit represents the hyper-area of the scattering matrix transform and allows for rapid distinguishabil…
Near-field optical microscopes with two independent tips for simultaneous excitation and detection can be essential tools for studying localized optical phenomena on the subwavelength scale. Here, we report on the implementation of a fully automated and robust dual-tip scanning near-field optical microscope (SNOM), in which the excitation tip is stationary, while the detection tip automatically scans the surrounding area. To monitor and control the distance between the two probes, mechanical interactions due to shear forces are used. We experimentally investigate suitable scan parameters and f…
We show that surface-plasmon polaritons excited in negative permittivity metamaterials having shallow periodic surface corrugation profiles can be explored to push the absorption of single and continuous sheets of graphene up to 100%. In the relaxation regime, the position of the plasmonic resonances of the hybrid system is determined by the plasma frequency of the metamaterial, allowing the frequency range for enhanced absorption to be set without the need of engineering graphene.
The high harmonic generation in periodically corrugated submicrometer waveguides is studied numerically. Plasmonic field enhancement in the vicinity of the corrugations allows to use low pump intensities. Simultaneously, periodic placement of the corrugations leads to quasi-phase-matching and corresponding increase of the high harmonic efficiency. The optimization of waveguide geometry is performed, and the resulting spectra are analyzed by the means of (1+1)D numerical model.
The effect of Anderson localization on surface plasmon polariton propagation and outward leakage when scattered by a randomly corrugated section of the interface
Magnetic localized surface plasmons (LSPs) supported on metallic structures corrugated by very long and curved grooves have been recently proposed and demonstrated on an extremely thin metallic spiral structure (MSS) in the microwave regime. However, the mode profile for the magnetic LSPs was demonstrated by measuring only the electric field, not the magnetic field.
One-dimensional (1D) subwavelength corrugated metal structures has been described to support spoof surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs). Here we demonstrate that a modulated 1D subwavelength corrugated metal structure can convert spoof SPPs to propagating waves. The structure is fed at the center through a slit with a connected waveguide on the input side. The subwavelength corrugated metal structure on the output surface is regarded as metasurface and modulated periodically to realize the leaky-wave radiation at the broadside. The surface impedance of the corrugated metal structure is modulated …
A novel broadband technique to effectively launch plasmons along a single graphene layer at terahertz (THz) frequencies is proposed. To this end, the coupling of the electromagnetic wave from a readily available plasmonic waveguide established by a periodically corrugated metallic surface to the graphene sheet is proposed. As will be shown, this technique can significantly surmount the need for efficient excitation of plasmons in graphene. For this purpose, an analytical technique based on transmission line theory is employed to calculate the scattering parameters of the connection of the plas…
The study of metallic corrugated surfaces has recently received strong attention due to their ability to mimic the behaviour of surface plasmons. In this work, this plasmon-like behaviour is employed to design an open cylindrical waveguide. The structure consists on a longitudinally corrugated metallic cylinder with corrugations filled with a dielectric material. The dispersion relation of this waveguide is analyzed in the Òcontinuous limitÓ, defined as the limit in which the number of corrugations is infinite, but keeping their periodicity constant. It is found that, in this limit, the wavegu…
Various metals (Ag, Al, Au, Bi, Cu), polymers (polyvinylpyrrolidone, polystyrene), and electrically conductive polymers (polyacetylene, polyaniline, poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) polystyrene sulfonate) were subjected to a particle swarm optimizer inboth the planar and grating configuration to optimize conditions which supported surface plasmon resonances (SPR) for chemical sensing. The objective functions for these configurations were based on absorption peak depth, full width at half maximum, or the enhancement factor (planar). Simple logic gates were constructed for both configurations wh…
Surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) are traditionally excited by plane waves within the Rayleigh range of a focused transverse magnetic (TM) Gaussian beam. Here, we investigate and confirm the coupling between SPPs and two-dimensional Gaussian and Bessel-Gauss wave packets, as well as one-dimensional light sheets and space-time wave packets. We encode the incoming wavefronts with spatially varying states of polarization then couple the respective TM components of radial and azimuthal vector beam profiles to confirm SPP polarization-correlation and spatial-mode selectivity. Our results do not req…
We have studied the formation of near-field fringes when sharp edges of materials are imaged using scattering-type scanning near-field optical microscope (s-SNOM). Materials we have investigated include dielectrics, metals, near-perfect conductor, and those that possess anisotropic permittivity and hyperbolic dispersion. For our theoretical analysis, we use a technique that combines full-wave numerical simulations of tip-sample near-field interaction and signal demodulation at higher orders akin to what is done in typical s-SNOM experiments. Unlike previous tip-sample interaction near-field mo…
Plasmon hybridization between closely spaced nanoparticles yields new hybrid modes not found in individual constituents, allowing for the engineering of resonance properties and field enhancement capabilities of metallic nanostructure. Experimental verifications of plasmon hybridization have been thus far mostly limited to optical frequencies, as metals cannot support surface plasmons at longer wavelengths. Here, we introduce the concept of 'spoof plasmon hybridization' in highly conductive metal structures and investigate experimentally the interaction of localized surface plasmon resonances …
The second harmonic generation is one of the most important applications of nonlinear effect, which has attracted great interests in nonlinear optics and microwave in the past decades. To the best of our knowledge, however, generating the second harmonics of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) has not been reported. Here, we propose to generate the second harmonics of spoof SPPs with high efficiency at microwave frequencies using subwavelength-scale nonlinear active device integrated on specially designed plasmonic waveguides, which are composed of two ultrathin corrugated metallic strips printe…
Scanning near-field field optical microscopy (SNOM) is a technique, which allows sub-wavelength optical imaging of photonic structures. While the electric field components of light can be routinely obtained, imaging of the magnetic components has only recently become of interest. This is so due to the development of artificial materials, which enhance and exploit the typically weak magnetic light-matter interactions to offer extraordinary optical properties. Consequently, both sources and detectors of the magnetic field of light are now required. In this paper, assisted by finite-difference ti…
A recent study shows that: when a long lifetime particle is positioned near a plasmonic metal nanoparticle, lifetime of plasmon oscillations extends, but, "only" near that long-life particle [PRB 101, 035416 (2020)]. Here, we show that this phenomenon can be utilized for ultrahigh (single-molecule) resolution ultrafast apertureless (scattering) SNOM applications. We use the exact solutions of 3D Maxwell equations. We illuminate a metal-coated silicon tip, a quantum emitter (QE) placed on the tip apex, with a femtosecond laser. The induced near-field in the apex decays rapidly except in the vic…
Metasurfaces based on gap surface-plasmon resonators allow one to arbitrarily control the phase, amplitude and polarization of reflected light with high efficiency. However, the performance of densely-packed metasurfaces is reduced, often quite significantly, in comparison with simple analytical predictions. We argue that this reduction is mainly because of the near-field coupling between metasurface elements, which results in response from each element being different from the one anticipated by design simulations, which are commonly conducted for each individual element being placed in an ar…
In this paper, one of the major shortcomings of the conventional numerical approaches is alleviated by introducing the probabilistic nature of molecular transitions into the framework of classical computational electrodynamics. The main aim is to develop a numerical method, which is capable of capturing the statistical attributes caused by the interactions between a group of spontaneous as well as stimulated emitters and the surrounding electromagnetic field. The electromagnetic field is governed by classical Maxwell's equations, while energy is absorbed from and emitted to the (surrounding) f…
