We present detailed numerical simulations of NGC 1433, an intermediate-type barred spiral showing strong morphological features including a secondary bar, nuclear ring, inner ring, outer pseudoring, and two striking, detached spiral arcs known as ``plumes.'' This galaxy is an ideal candidate for recreating the observed morphology through dynamical models and determining the pattern speed. We derived a gravitational potential from an $H$-band image of the galaxy and simulated the behavior of a two-dimensional disk of 100,000 inelastically colliding gas particles. We find that the closest matching morphology between a $B$-band image and a simulation occurs with a pattern speed of 0.89 km s$^{-1}$ arcsec$^{-1}$ $\pm$ 5-10%. We also determine that the ratio of corotation radius to the average published bar radius is 1.7 $\pm$ 0.3, with the ambiguity in the bar radius being the largest contributor to the error.
We present dynamical simulations of NGC 2523 and NGC 4245, two barred galaxies (types SB(r)b and SB(r)0/a, respectively) with prominent inner rings. Our goal is to estimate the bar pattern speeds in these galaxies by matching a sticky-particle simulation to the $B$-band morphology, using near-infrared $K_s$-band images to define the gravitational potentials. We compare the pattern speeds derived by this method with those derived in our previous paper using the well-known Tremaine-Weinberg continuity equation method. The inner rings in these galaxies, which are likely to be resonance features, …
We have conducted near-infrared (J- and H-band) surface photometry for two early type barred galaxies, NGC 3412 and NGC 3941. The bulges of NGC 3412 and NGC 3941 show isophotal twists which indicate that they are triaxial. NGC 3412 has a very short bar and its bulge is more centrally concentrated than that of NGC 3941. The unusually short bar and the centrally concentrated triaxial bulge of NGC 3412 might be the result of bar dissolution. The colors of the nuclear region of NGC 3941 resemble those of the blue nuclei, implying the presence of young stellar populations.
We have performed for the first time in the literature a 2D structural analysis on the barred lenticular and face--on galaxies NGC 4608 and NGC 5701. The results indicate that these galaxies either have never had large disks or their disks were almost completely destroyed by their strong bars, due to secular evolution processes. We discuss these surprising conclusions checking for signs of secular evolution, considering bar forming instabilities, and suggesting, based on N-body simulations, a new mechanism to form bars in spheroids, which includes non-spherical halos. Quantitative predictions …
We have used 2D Fabry-Perot absorption-line spectroscopy of the SB0 galaxy NGC 7079 to measure its bar pattern speed, $\om$. As in all previous cases of bar pattern speed measurements, we find a fast bar. We estimate that NGC 7079 has been undisturbed for at least the past Gyr or roughly 8 bar rotations, long enough for the bar to have slowed down significantly through dynamical friction if the disk is sub-maximal.
We present direct kinematic evidence for bar streaming motions in two active galaxies with boxy stellar bulges. The Hawaii Imaging Fabry-Perot Interferometer was used on the Canada-France-Hawaii 3.6-m telescope and the University of Hawaii 2.2-m telescope to derive the two-dimensional velocity field of the line-emitting gas in the disks of the Sc galaxy NGC 3079 and the Sb galaxy NGC 4388. In contrast to previous work based on long-slit data, the detection of the bar potential from the Fabry-Perot data does not rely on the existence of inner Lindblad resonances or strong bar-induced shocks. Si…
Double bars have been proposed as a means of transporting molecular gas past inner Lindblad resonances into the nuclear regions, where it can fuel active or starburst nuclei. Thus far, the existence of double bars has been determined predominantly through analysis of near infrared images, which can tell us little about the dynamics and inflow rates of these systems. We have observed two double bar galaxy candidates (NGC 2273 and NGC 5728) in CO J=1-0 with the Owens Valley Radio Observatory Millimeter Array. Despite the similarity in the near infrared images of these galaxies, we see rather dif…
We have made observations of the \ion{H}{1} in the southern ringed barred spiral galaxies NGC~1433 and NGC~6300 with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), the main goal being to test the resonance theory for the origin of these rings. NGC~1433 is the prototypical ringed barred spiral, and displays distinct \ion{H}{1}~counterparts to its nuclear ring, inner ring, outer pseudoring, and plume-like features. The $L_{4}$ and $L_{5}$ regions at corotation, as well as the bar itself, are relatively devoid of neutral atomic hydrogen. By associating the inner ring of NGC~1433 with the inner sec…
We have conducted a $UBVRI$ and $H_α$ CCD photometry of 5 barred galaxies, NGC 2523, NGC 2950, NGC 3412, NGC 3945 and NGC 5383, along with SPH simulations, in order to understand the origin of young stellar populations in the nuclei of barred galaxies. The $H_α$ emissions which are thought to be emitted by young stellar populations are either absent or strongly concentrated on the nuclei of early type galaxies (NGC 2950, NGC 3412, NGC 3945), while they are observed in the nuclei and circumnuclear regions of intermediate type galaxies with strong bars (NGC 2523, NGC 5383). SPH simulations of re…
We performed SPH simulations to study the nuclear morphology of a barred galaxy NGC 4314. We have constructed the mass models based on the results of a profile decomposition into disk, bulge, and bar components. Our models have three different nuclear structures according to the assumption about the nuclear bar: no nuclear bar, a synchronous nuclear bar and a fast nuclear bar. Our SPH simulations show that the morphology of the nuclear region of NGC 4314 which is characterized by an elongated ring/spiral of newly formed stars and HII regions, aligned nearly parallel to the primary bar can be u…
We present surface photometry and stellar kinematics of NGC 2950, which is a nearby and undisturbed SB0 galaxy hosting two nested stellar bars. We use the Tremaine-Weinberg method to measure the pattern speed of the primary bar. This also permits us to establish directly and for the first time that the two nested bars are rotating with different pattern speeds, and in particular that the rotation frequency of the secondary bar is higher than that of the primary one.
We present surface photometry and stellar kinematics of NGC 4431, a barred dwarf galaxy in the Virgo cluster undergoing a tidal interaction with one of its neighbors, NGC 4436. We measured its bar pattern speed using the Tremaine-Weinberg method, and derived the ratio of the corotation radius, D_L, to the bar semi-major axis, a_B. We found D_L/a_B=0.6^{+1.2}_{-0.4} at 99% confidence level. Albeit with large uncertainty, the probability that the bar ends close to its corotation radius (i.e., 1.0 \leq D_L/a_B \leq 1.4) is about twice as likely as that the bar is much shorter than corotation radi…
We characterize the stellar populations in the nuclear region of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 4900 using the integral field spectrometer OASIS and the synthesis code LavalSB and the code from Mollá & Garc\'ıa-Vargas (2000) for the young ($< 10$ Myr) and the old stellar populations, respectively. The high spatial resolution of the instrument allows us to find an old population uniformely distributed and younger regions located at the end of the galaxy bar and on each side of a nuclear bar.
We measured the bar pattern speed, $\om$, of the SB0 galaxy NGC 1023 using the Tremaine-Weinberg (1984) method with stellar-absorption slit spectroscopy. The morphology and kinematics of the \hi gas outside NGC 1023 suggest it suffered a tidal interaction, sometime in the past, with one of its dwarf companions. At present, however, the optical disc is relaxed. If the disc had been stabilized by a massive dark matter halo and formed its bar in the interaction, then the bar would have to be slow. We found $\om = 5.0 \pm 1.8$ \kmsa, so that the bar ends near its co-rotation radius. It is therefor…
Detailed neutral hydrogen observations have been obtained of the large barred spiral galaxy NGC 3992 and its three small companion galaxies, UGC 6923, UGC 6940, and UGC 6969. For the main galaxy, the HI distribution is regular with a low level radial extension outside the stellar disc. However, at exactly the region of the bar, there is a pronounced central HI hole in the gas distribution. Likely gas has been transported inwards by the bar and because of the emptyness of the hole no large accretion events can have happened in recent galactic times. The gas kinematics is very regular and it is …
We give a brief description of a new model for non-circular motions in disk galaxy velocity fields, that does not invoke epicycles. We assume non-circular motions to stem from a bar-like or oval distortion to the potential, as could arise from a triaxial halo or a bar in the mass distribution of the baryons. We apply our model to the high-quality CO and Halpha kinematics of NGC 2976 presented by Simon et al. 2003; it fits the data as well as their model with unrealistic radial flows, but yields a steeper rotation curve. Our analysis and other evidence suggests that NGC 2976 hosts a bar, implyi…
We present the results of the CO mapping observations of the barred spiral galaxy NGC3504 with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. The distribution of the molecular gas shows offset ridges which correspond to the distribution of HII regions along the bar. The velocity perpendicular to the bar decreases abruptly at the ridge. The velocity change implies that the molecular gas changes the direction of its motion to parallel to the bar at the ridge. Since the position angle of the major axis of the bar and the line of nodes are almost the same in NGC 3504, an upper limit to the pattern speed of the bar …
NGC 4340 is a double-barred SB0 galaxy in the Virgo cluster (Wozniak et al. 1995). Here, we present evidence that this galaxy also posseses a luminous stellar nuclear ring of relatively old stars with little or no gas. The ring lies just outside the inner bar, at the probable inner inner Lindblad resonance (IILR) of the outer bar. Careful inspection of the isophotes and unsharp masks shows that the two bars are slightly misaligned, which suggests they may be independently rotating.
We compare the distribution of molecular gas and star formation activity in the bar region of six spirals (NGC 2903, NGC 3627, NGC 4321, NGC 5457, NGC 6946, & IC 342) from the BIMA Survey of Nearby Galaxies (SONG). The molecular gas, traced using the CO (J=1--0) emission line, is brightest along the leading edge of the stellar bar in the bar dust lanes. The star formation activity, traced using the Halpha emission line, is offset towards the leading side of the CO emission. A cross-correlation analysis shows that a) the HII regions are offset 0--800 pc on the leading side of the CO emission, b…
We have applied the Tremaine-Weinberg continuity equation method to derive the bar pattern speed in the SB(r)b galaxy NGC 2523 and the SB(r)0/a galaxy NGC 4245 using the Calcium Triplet absorption lines. These galaxies were selected because they have strong inner rings which can be used as independent tracers of the pattern speed. The pattern speed of NGC 2523 is 26.4 $\pm$ 6.1 km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$, assuming an inclination of 49.7$^{\circ}$ and a distance of 51.0 Mpc. The pattern speed of NGC 4245 is 75.5 $\pm$ 31.3 km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$, assuming an inclination of 35.4$^{\circ}$ and a dist…
NGC 5850 is a prototype of double-barred galaxy (Friedli et al. 1996) classified as SBb(sr) I-II (Higdon et al. 1998; Prieto et al. 1997). This kind of system is primordial to understand the physical mechanism responsible for feeding galaxy nuclei and boost the star formation rate. The CO(1-0) emission has been mapped in NGC 5850, i) in the very center, using the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer, to reach a 2.4\arcsec$\times$1.5\arcsec\ (PA$=$$-165^\circ$) spatial resolution, and ii) in the primary bar with the IRAM-30m telescope, with a 22\arcsec beam. We have found CO emission in the cent…
Emission-line optical spectrophotometry for 55 H II regions in the prominent southern barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 is presented. Nebular diagnostic diagrams such as [N II]/[O II] and [S II]/[O II] versus [O II]/{O III] show that the H II regions of the barred galaxy have the same range of physical conditions as found in non-barred late-type galaxies. Extinction is moderately high across the disc and there is evidence for a slight trend of extinction with galactocentric distance; the logarithmic extinction at H-beta falls from about c = 1.2 in the centre to 0.6 -- 0.8 in the outer regions. The…
We have mapped the \hcn emission from two spiral galaxies, NGC2903 and NGC3504 to study the gas properties in the bars. The HCN(1-0) emission is detected in the center and along the bar of NGC2903. The line ratio HCN(1-0)/CO(1-0) ranges from 0.07 to 0.12 with the lowest value in the center. The enhancement of HCN(1-0) emission along the bar indicates a higher fraction of dense molecular gas in the bar than at the center. The mass of dense molecular gas in the center (2.2x 10^7 Msun) is about 6 times lower than that in the bar (1.2x 10^8 Msun). The total star formation rate (SFR) is estimated t…
We present sensitive, high resolution observations of neutral hydrogen (HI) in the unusually gas-rich, oval distortion of the Seyfert galaxy NGC4151. The gas dynamics of the oval are found to be consistent with those of a kinematically weak bar, fully confirming previous suggestions for the presence of a fat bar, and, for the first time, individual gaseous features in the bar are spatially resolved. In particular, the two bright regions close to the leading edges of the bar in NGC4151 exhibit kinematics strikingly similar to the signature of bar shocks seen in gas-dynamical simulations, and de…
A remarkable structure is observed in the innermost regions of the barred galaxy NGC 1415 : a small stellar bar, bright circumnuclear ionized gas seen in Halpha, two bright ionized gas sources, seen in Halpha, just beyond the ends of the small bar and a boxy distribution of optical continuum. We have developed a mass distribution model consisting in disk, a bulge, and a bar to approximate t he observed central morphology and its surface brightness. In order to reproduce the observed optical brightness distribution a two-component bar was used, with one component to model the elongated isophote…
When integrals in the standard Tremaine-Weinberg method are evaluated for the case of a realistic model of a doubly barred galaxy, their modifications introduced by the second rotating pattern are in accord with what can be derived from a simple extension of that method, based on separation of tracer's density. This extension yields a qualitative argument that discriminates between prograde and retrograde inner bars. However, the estimate of the value of inner bar's pattern speed requires further assumptions. When this extension of the Tremaine-Weinberg method is applied to the recent observat…
HI observations with the VLA of the late-type barred galaxy NGC 925 show clear streaming motions along four spiral arms close to the minor axis. A transition from inward streaming to outward streaming is found, presumably marking the corotation resonance. The realm of inward streaming extends to very large radii, corresponding to 1.3R25 and 1.7 bar radii deprojected. This implies that most of the visible disk is inside corotation, although the HI disk extends beyond, at least to 2R25. As a result, either the bar and the spirals are rotating separately or the bar rotates very slowly compared to…
We present an analysis of ground-based and HST images of three early-type barred galaxies. The first, NGC 2681, may be the clearest example yet of a galaxy with three concentric bars. The two other galaxies were previously suggested as triple-barred. Our analysis shows that while NGC 3945 is probably double-barred, NGC 4371 has only one bar; but both have intriguing central structures. NGC 3945 has a large, extremely bright disk inside its primary bar, with patchy dust lanes, a faint nuclear ring or pseudo-ring within the disk, and an apparent secondary bar crossing the ring. NGC 4371 has a br…
High resolution OVRO CO 1-0 observations of the inner kpc of the M51-companion NGC 5195 reveal the presence of a kpc-sized bar, or possibly an inclined disk with a two armed spiral, at the center of the optical bar. The molecular mass of the feature is 2.7 x 10^8 M_o, half of which is within a radius of 250 pc. The resulting gas surface density of 10^3 M_o pc^-2 is typical for starbursts. However, the lack of evidence for current star formation suggests that either some mechanism is preventing stars from forming, or the standard CO to H_2 conversion factor substantially overestimates the avail…
NGC 6782 is an early-type barred spiral galaxy exhibiting a rich and complex morphology with multiple ring patterns. To provide a physical understanding of its structure and kinematical properties, two-dimensional hydrodynamical simulations have been carried out. Numerical calculations reveal that the striking features in NGC 6782 can be reproduced provided that the gas flow is governed by the gravitational potential associated with a slowly rotating strong bar. In particular, the response of the gaseous disk to the bar potential leads to the excitation of spiral density waves at the inner Lin…
For decades, the grand-design SAB spiral galaxy NGC 5248 has been postulated to host a short bar of semi-major axis 22" (1.6 kpc). From dynamical and morphological arguments, we argue, however, that its spiral structure is being driven by a large-scale bar whose corotation radius lies at around 115" (8.6 kpc). Our estimate is based partially on a deep R-band image which reveals that the feature previously thought to be an inclined disk is in fact an extended stellar bar. The bar is embedded within a fainter outer disk visible out to a radius of 230" (17.2 kpc). The bar has a deprojected ellipti…
We present some preliminary results from new Chandra and XMM-Newton X-ray observations of the nearby barred spiral galaxy NGC1672. It shows dramatic nuclear and extra-nuclear star formation activity, including starburst regions located near each end of its strong bar, both of which host ultraluminous X-ray sources (ULXs). With the new high-spatial-resolution Chandra imaging, we show for the first time that NGC1672 possesses a faint ($L(X)~10^39 erg/s), hard central X-ray source surrounded by an X-ray bright circumnuclear starburst ring that dominates the X-ray emission in the region. The centr…
A large position angle misalignment between the stellar bar and the distribution of dust in the late-type barred spiral NGC 3488 was discovered, using mid-infrared images from the Spitzer Space Telescope and optical images from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). The angle between the bar and dust patterns was measured to be 25+-2deg, larger than most of the misalignments found previously in barred systems based on Ha or HI/CO observations. The stellar bar is bright at optical and 3.6um, while the dust pattern is more prominent in the 8um band but also shows up in the SDSS u and g-band images…
We compare stellar orbits in an early (NGC 4314) and a late-type barred galaxy (NGC 1073). We find that these bars are cold in the sense that the majority of stars can be described as being nearby to periodic orbits. We place limits of (65km/s)^2 and (50km/s)^2 on the components of the diagonalized velocity dispersion ellipsoid matrix for stars in the bars of NGC 4314 and NGC 1073 respectively. Both bars end near the inner 4:1 Lindblad (ultraharmonic) resonance. We conjecture that a large class of bars end near this resonance. The morphology of the bars depends on the strength of the 4:1 reson…
The late-type galaxy NGC 4303 (M61) is one of the most intensively studied barred galaxies in the Virgo Cluster. Its prominent enhanced star formation throughout large areas of the disk can be nicely studied due to its low inclination of about 27 \degr. We present observations of NGC 4303 with the ROSAT PSPC and HRI in the soft X-ray (0.1-2.4 keV). The bulk of the X-ray emission is located at the nuclear region. It contributes more than 80% to the total observed soft X-ray flux. The extension of the central X-ray source and the L_X/L_Halpha ratio point to a low luminous AGN (LINER) with a circ…
We present CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) maps of the Seyfert galaxy NGC 5728. Although a stellar nuclear bar structure is clearly identified in the near-infrared images in the central 10", inside the ring identified as the ILR of the primary bar, there is no nuclear bar structure in the molecular gas. Instead, the CO emission reveals an elongated structure, 15" in length, beginning at the nucleus (defined by the radio center) aligned with the jet/ionisation cone, at a PA of 127 degrees. This morphology, not frequently observed in Seyfert galaxies, may be interpreted in terms of enhanced CO excitation al…
We present CO interferometer observations of the barred galaxy NGC 4303 (M61). This galaxy has a gas concentration at the central region and offset ridges in the bar. Sharp velocity gradients are apparent across the ridges. Analyses of the CO data and the newborn stellar clusters revealed in HST images indicate the existence of unresolved molecular clouds with masses of 10^4-6Msun. The observed shear velocity gradient across the ridges is too small to break up giant molecular clouds. Therefore, the clouds are likely to survive passage through the ridges. We discuss a cloud orbit model in a bar…
We report the radio continuum structure of the barred galaxy NGC 3367 with an angular resolution of 4''.5. The radio structure indicates emission from the disk and from a triple source consisting of the nucleus straddled by extended sources (the lobes). The triple source shows an excess of radio continuum emission compared to the emission expected from the total radio - Halpha correlation, suggesting a non-thermal origin probably related to AGN activity and no to star formation processes. The triple source is about 12 kpc in diameter at a P.A. 40, close (but not aligned) to that of the stellar…
We have used the Tremaine-Weinberg method to measure the angular speed of rotation for the bar in the SB0 galaxy NGC 936. With this technique, the bar's pattern speed, Omega_p, can be derived from the luminosity and stellar-kinematic information in long-slit spectral observations taken parallel to the major axis of the galaxy. The kinematic measurement required is the mean line-of-sight velocity of all stellar light entering the slit. This quantity can only be calculated reliably if any asymmetry in the shape of the broadening function of the spectral lines is also measured, and so we present …
Strong evidence for the presence of a warped Keplerian accretion disc in NGC4258 (M 106) has been inferred from the kinematics of water masers detected at sub-parsec scales. Assuming a power-law accretion disc and using constraints on the disc parameters derived from observational data, we have analyzed the relativistic Bardeen-Petterson effect driven by a Kerr black hole as the potential physical mechanism responsible for the disc warping. We found that the Bardeen-Petterson radius is comparable to or smaller than the inner radius of the maser disc (independent of the allowed value for the bl…
Multi-fibre emission-line spectrophotometry of 33 H II regions and 3 diffuse interstellar medium positions are presented for the barred Magellanic galaxy NGC 1313. The H II regions show a fairly narrow range of thermal conditions characteristic of high excitation nebular gas. Electron temperature was directly determined in four of the H II regions. The global O/H abundance distribution appears very flat across the disk at 12 + log O/H = 8.4 +/- 0.1, with possibly the bar regions having abundances higher by 0.2 dex than the outer disc. NGC 1313 is the highest mass barred galaxy known not to hav…
Mass inflow in barred galaxies has been invoked to account for a wide variety of phenomena, but until now direct evidence for inflow has been lacking. We present Fabry-Perot H-alpha observations of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 1530 from which we determine velocities of the ionized gas for the entire region swept by the bar. We compare the velocity field to models of gas flow in barred spirals and show that it is well reproduced by ideal gas hydrodynamic models. Inspection of the models and observations reveals that gas entering the bar dust lanes streams directly down the dust lanes toward the…
We present high resolution (3" - 5") observations of CO(1-0) and HCN(1-0) emission from the circumnuclear star forming ring in the barred spiral galaxy NGC 6951, a host of a type-2 Seyfert, using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array and 45 m telescope. We find that most of the HCN emission is associated with the circumnuclear ring, where vigorous star formation occurs. The HCN to CO integrated intensity ratio is also enhanced in the star forming ring; the peak value of HCN/CO ratio is 0.18, which is comparable to the ratio in the starbursts NGC 253 and M82. The formation mechanism of dense molecular …
We present images of the barred galaxy NGC 7479 in the optical and near infrared broad--bands $B,V,R,J,H,K$, and images in H$α$+[N II] and CO(J=1$\rightarrow$0) emission. The H$α$ and CO emission in the bar are coincident and confined to narrow linear features that are offset from the center of the bar as observed in the near infrared. We estimate the gravitational potential from the $K$ image, which provides an estimate of the torque on the gas at the position of the CO emission in the bar. We find that the implied gas inflow velocity derived from the torque is $10-20$ km s$^{-1}$. Our inflow…
Aperture synthesis observations of CO(J=1-0) emission and near-infrared broad-band photometry of the non-barred Seyfert galaxy NGC 5033 (D = 18.7 Mpc) were performed. Our 3".9 x 3".6 resolution CO observations reveal a perturbed distribution and the kinematics of molecular gas in the center of NGC 5033; we find the characteristic gaseous features that are widely observed in barred spiral galaxies, such as two bright CO peaks near the center (separated by ~ 3'' or 270 pc from the nucleus), two offset ridges of CO emission emanating from the CO peaks, and a CO ring (with a radius of ~ 14'' or 1.…
We present CO(3-2) emission observations toward the 3'x3' (or 20x20kpc at a distance of 23Mpc) region of the southern barred spiral galaxy NGC 986 using the Atacama Submillimeter Telescope Experiment (ASTE). This effort is a part of our on-going extragalactic CO(3-2) imaging project ADIoS (ASTE Dense gas Imaging of Spiral galaxies). Our CO(3-2) image revealed the presence of a large (the major axis is 14 kpc in total length) gaseous bar filled with dense molecular medium along the dark lanes observed in optical images. This is the largest ``dense-gas rich bar'' known to date. The dense gas bar…
We present high angular resolution ~1" and 0.6" mm-interferometric observations of the 12CO(1-0) and 12CO(2-1) line emission in the central 300pc of the late-type spiral galaxy NGC6946. The data, obtained with the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer (PdBI), allow the first detection of a molecular gas spiral in the inner ~10" (270pc) with a large concentration of molecular gas (M(H_2) ~1.6x10^7M_sun) within the inner 60pc. This nuclear clump shows evidence for a ring-like geometry with a radius of ~10pc as inferred from the p-v diagrams. Both the distribution of the molecular gas as well as it…
We report the gross properties of the velocity field of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 3367. The following values were found: inclination with respect to the plane of the sky, i=30 deg; position angle (PA) of receding semi major axis PA=51 and systemic velocity V(sys)=3032 km/s. Large velocity dispersion are observed of upt o 120 km/s in the nuclear region, of up to 70 km/s near the eastern bright sources just beyond the edge of the stellar bar where three spiral arms seem to start and in the western bright sources at about 10 kpc. Deviations from normal circular velocities are observed from all…
We present a detailed study of the stellar kinematics in the barred galaxy NGC 5728 based on I-band photometry and long-slit spectroscopic observations in the region of the near-IR Ca II triplet. The analysis of the stellar line-of-sight velocity distribution (LOSVD) has revealed, in the central regions of the bar, the presence of a cold (v/sigma~2.5) prograde $S$-shaped velocity component that coexists in the central 4 kpc with a fainter and hotter (v/sigma~0.5) counterrotating component. Beyond 4 kpc from the nucleus the LOSVD shows the stellar bar kinematics. The comparison of the radial su…
We report a dynamical determination of the separate contributions of disk and dark halo masses to the rotation curve of a spiral galaxy. We use fluid-dynamical models of gas flow in the barred galaxy NGC 4123 to constrain the dynamical properties of the galaxy: disk M/L, bar pattern speed, and the central density and scale radius of the dark halo. We derive a realistic barred potential directly from the light distribution. For each model we assume a value of the stellar M/L and a bar pattern speed Omega_p and add a dark halo to fit the rotation curve. We then compute the gas flow velocities wi…
The non-circular streaming motions in barred galaxies are sensitive to the mass of the bar and can be used to lift the degeneracy between disk and dark matter halo encountered when fitting axisymmetric rotation curves of disk galaxies. In this paper, we present photometric and kinematic observations of NGC 4123, a barred galaxy of modest size (V_rot = 130 km/sec, L = 0.7 L_*), which reveal strong non-circular motions. The bar has straight dust lanes and an inner Lindblad resonance. The disk of NGC 4123 has no sign of truncation out to 10 scale lengths, and star-forming regions are found well o…
We present circumstantial evidence that the central region of the edge-on S0 galaxy NGC 4570, which harbors a 150 pc scale nuclear disc in addition to its main outer disc, has been shaped under the influence of a small (approx. 500pc) bar. This is based on the finding of two edge-on rings, whose locations are consistent with the Inner Lindblad and Ultra Harmonic Resonances of a rapidly tumbling triaxial potential. Observed features in the photometry and rotation curve nicely correspond with the positions of the main resonances, strengthening the case for a tumbling bar potential. The relative …
We present CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) maps of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC3147 of the NUclei of GAlaxies (NUGA) sample at 1.8'' x 1.6'' and 1.4'' x 1.2'' resolution respectively. Identifying the presence of a bar in NGC3147 we also compute the gravity torques exerted from the stellar bar on the gas.
Aims: NGC 1530 has one of the strongest bars ever observed and recent star formation sites are distributed across its bar. Our aim is to study the photometric properties of the bar and its HII regions, to elucidate the conditions under which HII regions form and their spatial relation to the principal dynamical features of the bar. Methods: We obtained BVRKs and Halpha photometry of the HII regions of the bar in NGC 1530. Broad-band integrated colours and Halpha equivalent widths were carefully measured and analysed as a function of position with respect to the main dust-lanes of the bar. Resu…
We report new detailed surface U, B, V, R, and I photometry of 81 stellar structures in the disk of the barred galaxy NGC 3367. The images show many different structures indicating that star formation is going on in the most part of the disk. NGC 3367 is known to have a very high concentration of molecular gas distribution in the central regions of the galaxy and bipolar synchrotron emission from the nucleus with two lobes (at 6 kpc) forming a triple structure similar to a radio galaxy. We have determined the U, B, V, R, and I magnitudes and U - B, B - V, U - V, and V - I colors for the centra…
We have determined the structure and kinematics of ionised gas in the weak oval bar of the archetypal Seyfert 1 galaxy, NGC 4151, using the TAURUS Fabry-Perot interferometer to simultaneously map the distribution and kinematics of Hbeta emission. We also present broad-band ultraviolet imaging of the host galaxy, obtained with XMM-Newton, that shows the detailed distribution of star formation in the bar and in the optically-faint outer spiral arms. We compare the distribution and kinematics of ionised gas with that previously determined in neutral hydrogen by Mundell & Shone; we suggest that th…
We present near-infrared images of NGC 4314 in the $J$,$H$, and $K$ bands. Colors in these bands are constant across the bar of NGC 4314 indicating that the mass-to-light ratio is constant over much of the galaxy. We have developed an efficient procedure for mapping the gravitational potential of a non-axisymmetric galaxy based on its appearance in the near-infrared using a Fourier Transform method. We account for the thickness of the galaxy's stellar disk by convolving its $K$ image with a function that depends upon the vertical stellar scale height. We apply this procedure to NGC 4314 and fi…
We present CO(1-0) and CO(2-1) maps of the starburst/Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 2782, obtained with the IRAM interferometer. The CO emission is aligned along the stellar nuclear bar of radius 1 kpc, configured in an elongated structure with two spiral arms at high pitch angle. At the extremity of the nuclear bar, the CO changes direction to trace two more extended spiral features at a lower pitch angle. These are the beginning of two straight dust lanes, which are aligned parallel to an oval distortion, reminiscent of a primary bar, almost perpendicular to the nuclear one. The two embedded bars appe…
We analyse SAURON kinematic maps of the inner kpc of the early-type (Sa) barred spiral galaxy NGC 5448. The observed morphology and kinematics of the emission-line gas is patchy and perturbed, indicating clear departures from circular motion. The kinematics of the stars is more regular, and displays a small inner disk-like system embedded in a large-scale rotating structure. We focus on the [OIII] gas, and use a harmonic decomposition formalism to analyse the gas velocity field. The higher-order harmonic terms and the main kinematic features of the observed data are consistent with an analytic…
NGC 613 (AM 0132-294) is a multi armed spiral with an active nucleus. Radio emission is aligned along the narrow inner bar of the spiral and appears to include inner and outer pairs of radio sources which define a line of ejection from this nucleus. Four high redshift quasars from the 2dF survey fall further out along this same line. The redshifts of these four, plus two others in this general direction, are close to the peak values in the periodic redshift distribution of quasars. In separation, redshifts and other properties there is an almost exact duplicate of NGC 613 in the pair of z ~ 2 …
