We have mapped the \hcn emission from two spiral galaxies, NGC2903 and NGC3504 to study the gas properties in the bars. The HCN(1-0) emission is detected in the center and along the bar of NGC2903. The line ratio HCN(1-0)/CO(1-0) ranges from 0.07 to 0.12 with the lowest value in the center. The enhancement of HCN(1-0) emission along the bar indicates a higher fraction of dense molecular gas in the bar than at the center. The mass of dense molecular gas in the center (2.2x 10^7 Msun) is about 6 times lower than that in the bar (1.2x 10^8 Msun). The total star formation rate (SFR) is estimated to be 1.4 Msun/yr, where the SFR at the center is 1.9 times higher than that in the bar. The time scale of consumption of the dense molecular gas in the center is about 3x 10^7 yr which is much shorter than that in the bar of about 2 to 10 x 10^8 yr. The dynamical time scale of inflow of the gas from the bar to the center is shorter than the consumption time scale in the bar, which suggests that the star formation (SF) activity at the center is not deprived of fuel. In the bar, the fraction of dense molecular gas mass relative to the total molecular gas mass is twice as high along the leading edge than along the central axis of the bar. The \hcn emission has a large velocity dispersion in the bar, which can be attributed partially to the streaming motions indicative of shocks along the bar. In NGC3504, the HCN(2-0) emission is detected only at the center. The fraction of dense molecular gas mass in the center is about 15%. Comparison of the SFR with the predictions from numerical simulations suggest that NGC2903 harbors a young type B bar with a strong inflow of gas toward the center whereas NGC3504 has an older bar and has already passed the phase of inflow of gas toward the center.
The central kpc region of the low luminosity type-1 Seyfert galaxy NGC 1097 has been observed in the CO(1-0) and HCN(1-0) lines with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array and the NRO 45 m telescope. We find a striking enhancement of the HCN emission toward the active nucleus of NGC 1097; a large fraction of the CO emission comes from the circumnuclear starburst ring (r = 10" or 700 pc at D = 14.5 Mpc), whereas the HCN emission is dominated by a strong unresolved peak at the nucleus. The HCN-to-CO integrated intensity ratio in brightness temperature scale is about 0.11 in the aperture of the 45 m teles…
Bright HNC 1--0 emission has been found towards several Seyfert galaxies. This is unexpected since traditionally HNC is a tracer of cold (10 K) gas, and the molecular gas of luminous galaxies like Seyferts is thought to have bulk kinetic temperatures surpassing 50 K. In this work we aim to distinguish the cause of the bright HNC and to model the physical conditions of the HNC and HCN emitting gas. We have used SEST, JCMT and IRAM 30m telescopes to observe HNC 3-2 and HCN 3-2 line emission in a selection of 5 HNC-luminous Seyfert galaxies. We estimate and discuss the excitation conditions of HC…
We made CO and HCN simultaneous observations of lenticular galaxies, NGC 404, NGC 3593 and NGC 4293, and detected HCN emission in NGC 3593 and NGC 4293 as well as CO in all the galaxies. The I(HCN)/I(CO) ratios were 0.025+-0.006 and 0.066+-0.005 in NGC 3593 and NGC 4293, respectively, which are comparable to the late-type spiral galaxies. The average of the I(HCN)/I(CO) ratios at the center of 12 nearby spiral galaxies including late-type was 0.055+-0.028. The line profiles of CO and HCN emission showed different shape in both galaxies. The HCN peaks were not at the systemic velocity of these …
We present an imaging survey of the CO(1--0), HCN(1--0), and HCO$^+$(1--0) lines in the nearby Seyfert galaxies using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array and RAINBOW Interferometer. Some of the observed Seyfert galaxies including NGC 1068, NGC 1097, NGC 5033, and NGC 5194 exhibit strong HCN(1--0) emission on a few 100 pc scales. The observed HCN(1--0)/CO(1--0) and HCN(1--0)/HCO$^+$(1--0) line ratios in the Seyfert nuclei ($>$0.2 and $>$1.8, respectively) have never been observed in the central regions of nuclear starburst galaxies. On the other hand, the molecular line ratios in the nuclei of NGC 30…
We have imaged the central ~1kpc of the circumnuclear starburst disk in the galaxy NGC253 in the HCN(1-0), HCO+(1-0), and CO(1-0) transitions at 60pc resolution using the Owens Valley Radio Observatory Millimeter-Wavelength Array (OVRO). We have also obtained Atacama Pathfinder Experiment (APEX) observations of the HCN(4-3) and the HCO+(4-3) lines of the starburst disk. We find that the emission from the HCN(1-0) and HCO+(1-0) transitions, both indicators of dense molecular gas, trace regions which are non-distinguishable within the uncertainties of our observations. Even though the continuum …
Several studies of nearby active galaxies indicate significantly higher HCN-to-CO intensity ratios in AGN than in starburst (SB) environments. HCN enhancement can be caused by many different effects, such as higher gas densities/temperatures, UV/X-ray radiation, and non-collisional excitation. As active galaxies often exhibit intense circumnuclear SB, high angular resolution/sensitivity observations are of paramount importance to disentangling the influence of SB from that of nuclear activity on the chemistry of the surrounding molecular gas. The tight relation of HCN enhancement and nuclear a…
We have conducted a high-resolution ``3D'' imaging survey of the CO(1--0), HCN(1--0), and HCO$^+$(1--0) lines toward the central a few kpc regions of the Seyfert and starburst galaxies in the local universe using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array. We detected luminous HCN(1--0) emissions toward a considerable fraction of these Seyfert galaxies (10 of 12 in our sub-sample), which indicated that some of these Seyfert galaxies, such as NGC 3079, NGC 3227, NGC 4051, NGC 6764, and NGC 7479, are indeed accompanied with compact nuclear starburst, given the tight correlation between the HCN(1--0) luminosi…
We present high resolution (3" - 5") observations of CO(1-0) and HCN(1-0) emission from the circumnuclear star forming ring in the barred spiral galaxy NGC 6951, a host of a type-2 Seyfert, using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array and 45 m telescope. We find that most of the HCN emission is associated with the circumnuclear ring, where vigorous star formation occurs. The HCN to CO integrated intensity ratio is also enhanced in the star forming ring; the peak value of HCN/CO ratio is 0.18, which is comparable to the ratio in the starbursts NGC 253 and M82. The formation mechanism of dense molecular …
An imaging survey of CO(1-0), HCN(1-0), and HCO$^+$(1-0) lines in the centers of nearby Seyfert galaxies has been conducted using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array and the RAINBOW interferometer. Preliminary results reveal that 3 Seyferts out of 7 show abnormally high HCN/CO and HCN/HCO$^+$ ratios, which cannot occur even in nuclear starburst galaxies. We suggest that the enhanced HCN emission originated from X-ray irradiated dense obscuring tori, and that these molecular line ratios can be a new diagnostic tool to search for ``pure'' AGNs. According to our HCN diagram, we suggest that NGC 1068, N…
We present high-resolution CO, HCN, and 13CO maps of the inner arcminute of NGC 1068 made with the BIMA interferometer. Several features appear in the CO map which have not previously been observed: (1) a firm detection of CO line emission from a compact region centered on the nucleus of the galaxy; (2) the detection of a triplet velocity structure characteristic of kinematically independent regions shown on the spectrum of the unresolved nuclear emission ; and (3) the detection of a molecular bar, the extent and position angle of which are in good agreement with the 2 $μ$m stellar bar. The mo…
We present BIMA observations of the HCN emission from five nearby spiral galaxies. The HCN observations comprise the first high-resolution (5--10\arcsec) survey of dense molecular gas from a sample of normal galaxies, rather than galaxies with prolific starburst or nuclear activities. The images show compact structure, demonstrating that the dense gas emission is largely confined to the central kiloparsec of the sources. In one of the galaxies, NGC 6946, the ratio of HCN to CO integrated intensities ranges from 0.05--0.2 within the extent of the HCN emission (r = 150 pc), with an average value…
High spatial resolution observations of the 12CO(1-0), HCN(1-0), HCO+(1-0), and 13CO(1-0) molecular lines toward the luminous infrared merger NGC 6240 have been performed using the Nobeyama Millimeter Array and the RAINBOW Interferometer. All of the observed molecular emission lines are concentrated in the region between the double nuclei of the galaxy. However, the distributions of both HCN and HCO+ emissions are more compact compared with that of 12CO, and they are not coincident with the star-forming regions. The HCN/12CO line intensity ratio is 0.25; this suggests that most of the molecula…
We present observations of the HCN and HCO+ J=1-0 transitions in the center of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC 6946 made with the BIMA and CARMA interferometers. Using the BIMA SONG CO map, we investigate the change in the I_HCN/I_CO and I_ HCO/I_CO integrated intensity ratios as a function of radius in the central kiloparsec of the galaxy, and find that they are strongly concentrated at the center. We use the 2MASS K_S band image to find the stellar surface density, and then construct a map of the hydrostatic midplane pressure. We apply a PDR model to the observed I_HCN/I_HCO+ integrated intensi…
We compare the dense molecular gas content in two barred spiral galaxies, NGC 6764 (classified LINER) and NGC 5430 (a Wolf-Rayet galaxy). We find a significant difference in the proportion of dense molecular gas between the two galaxies. CS(3-2) is detected in NGC 6764 but not in NGC 5430, even though the intensities of CO(2-1) and HCN(1-0) are higher in the latter galaxy. The non detection in NGC 5430 indicates that the CS abundance in that galaxy is unusually low, or that HCN is subthermally excited. To complement these observations, we discuss the ionization source in the nucleus of the LIN…
The Nobeyama Millimeter Array (NMA) has been used to make aperture synthesis CO(1-0) observations of the post-starburst galaxy NGC 5195. CO(1-0) and HCN(1-0) observations of NGC 5195 using the Nobeyama 45 m telescope are also presented. High-resolution (1".9 x 1".8 or 86 pc x 81 pc at D = 9.3 Mpc) NMA maps show a strong concentration of CO emission toward the central a few 100 pc region of NGC 5195, despite the fact that the current massive star formation is suppressed there. The HCN-to-CO integrated intensity ratio on the brightness temperature scale, R_{HCN/CO}, is about 0.02 within the cent…
IRAM 30m observations reveal that the deeply obscured IR-luminous galaxy NGC4418 has a rich molecular chemistry - including unusually luminous HC3N line emission. We furthermore detect: ortho-H2CO 2-1, 3-2; CN 1-0, 2-1; HCO+, 1-0. 3-2, HCN 3-2, HNC 1-0, 3-2 (and tentatively OCS 12-11). The HCN, HCO+, H2CO and CN line emission can be fitted to densities of n=5 x 10E4 - 10E5 cm-3 and gas temperatures Tk=80-150 K. Both HNC and HC3N are, however, significantly more excited than the other species which requires higher gas densities - or radiative excitation through e.g. mid-IR pumping. The HCN line…
We have performed high resolution CO(2-1), CO(1-0), HCN(1-0) and HCO+(1-0) observations of a "low star formation efficiency starburst galaxy" NGC 4527 with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array. The integrated intensity ratios, CO(2-1)/CO(1-0) and HCN(1-0)/CO(1-0), are found to be 0.6 +/- 0.05 and 0.06 +/- 0.007, respectively, at the center. These line ratios are smaller than those in prototypical starburst galaxies such as NGC 253 and M82, and we suggest that the fraction of dense molecular gas to the total molecular mass in the central a few kpc region of NGC 4527 is small. This fact may be responsi…
Aims: Investigation of the dense gas, the outflows and the continuum emission from the massive twin cores NGC6334I and I(N) at high spatial resolution. Methods: We imaged the region with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) at 3.4mm wavelength in continuum as well as CH3CN(5_K-4_K) and HCN(1-0) spectral line emission. Results: While the continuum emission in NGC6334I mainly traces the UCHII region, toward NGC6334I(N) we detect line emission from four of the previously identified dust continuum condensations that are of protostellar or pre-stellar nature. The CH3CN(5_K-4_K) lines are de…
A multi-line millimeter-wave study of the nearby starburst galaxy NGC 4945 has been carried out using the Swedish-ESO Submillimeter Telescope (SEST). The study covers the frequency range from 82 GHz to 354 GHz and includes 80 transitions of 19 molecules. 1.3 mm continuum data of the nuclear source are also presented. A large number of molecular species indicate the presence of a prominent high density interstellar gas component characterized by $n_{\rm H_2}\sim10^5$ cm$^{-3}$. Abundances of molecular species are calculated and compared with abundances observed toward the starburst galaxies NGC…
We present near-infrared and millimeter investigations of the nucleus of the infrared luminous galaxy NGC 4418, which previous observations suggest possesses a powerful buried AGN. We found the following main results: (1) The infrared K-band spectrum shows CO absorption features at 2.3-2.4 micron owing to stars and very strong H2 emission lines. The luminosity ratios of H2 emission lines are suggestive of a thermal origin, and the equivalent width of the H2 1-0 S(1) line is the second largest observed to date in an external galaxy, after the well-studied strong H2-emitting galaxy NGC 6240. (2)…
We present 5.2" x 2.6" resolution interferometry of CO J=1-0 emission from the starburst galaxy NGC 253. The high spatial resolution of these new data, in combination with recent high resolution maps of 13CO, HCN and near-infrared emission, allow us for the first time to link unambiguously the gas properties in the central starburst of NGC 253 with its bar dynamics. We confirm that the star formation results from bar-driven gas flows as seen in "twin peaks" galaxies. Two distinct kinematic features are evident from the CO map and position-velocity diagram: a group of clouds rotating as a solid…
We report single-dish multi-transition measurements of the 12^CO, HCN, and HCO^+ molecular line emission as well as HNC J=1-0 and HNCO in the two ultraluminous infra-red galaxies Arp220 and NGC6240. Using this new molecular line inventory, in conjunction with existing data in the literature, we compiled the most extensive molecular line data sets to date for such galaxies. The many rotational transitions, with their different excitation requirements, allow the study of the molecular gas over a wide range of different densities and temperatures with significant redundancy, and thus allow good c…
There is observational evidence that nuclear winds and X-rays can heavily influence the physical conditions and chemical abundances of molecular gas in the circumnuclear disks (CND) of Active Galactic Nuclei (AGN). In this paper we probe the chemical status of molecular gas in the CND of NGC1068, a prototypical Seyfert 2 galaxy. Precedent claims that the chemistry of molecular gas in the nucleus of NGC1068 is abnormal by galactic standards were based on the high HCN/CO luminosity ratio measured in the CND. Results from new observations obtained in this survey have served to derive abundances o…
We have used the new extended A configuration of the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer to study the dense molecular gas in the nucleus of the nearby spiral galaxy NGC6946 at unprecedented spatial resolution in the HCN(1-0) and CO(2-1) lines. The gas distribution in the central 50pc has been resolved and is consistent with a gas ring or spiral driven by the inner 400pc long stellar bar. For the first time, it is possible to directly compare the location of (dense) giant molecular clouds with that of (optically) visible HII regions in space-based images. We use the 3mm continuum and the HCN em…
We have searched for dense molecular gas in three barred spiral galaxies with young starbursts, NGC 3049, 5430 and 6764, which are known Wolf-Rayet galaxies. We detected HCN in the latter two, and CS was marginally detected in NGC 6764. The dense molecular gas contents of the three galaxies are compared to those of other galaxies and to other indicators of star formation. The HCN luminosities (relative to the CO and far infrared ones) in these galaxies with very young starbursts are consistent with those observed in galaxies with older starbursts and in normal galaxies, and so are our upper li…
We find that the HNC J=3-2 emission is brighter than the HCN 3-2 emission by factors of 1.5 to 2.3 in the ultraluminous mergers Arp220 and Mrk231 and the luminous IR galaxy NGC4418. We furthermore report the detection of HNC J=4-3 in Mrk231. Overluminous HNC emission is unexpected in warm molecular gas in ultraluminous galaxies since I(HNC)>I(HCN) is usually taken as a signature of cold (10 - 20 K) dark clouds. Since the molecular gas of the studied galaxies is warm (T_k > 40 K) we present two alternative explanations to the overluminous HNC: a) HNC excitation is affected by pumping of the rot…
High resolution observations of 12CO (2.''3), 13CO (3.''9), and HCN (5.''4) J=1--0 in the galaxy merger Arp 299 (IC 694 and NGC 3690) show the line ratios vary dramatically across the system. The 12CO/13CO ratio is unusually large, 60 +- 15, at the IC 694 nucleus, where 12CO emission is very strong, and much smaller, 10 +- 3, in the southern extended disk of that galaxy. Elsewhere, the 12CO/13CO line ratio is 5-20, typical of spiral galaxies. The line ratio variation in the overlap between the two galaxies is smaller, ranging from 10 +- 3 in the east to 20 +- 4 in the west. The 12CO/HCN line r…
We have observed HNC 1-0, CN 1-0 and 2-1 line emission in a sample of 13 IR luminous (LIRGs, L_IR > 10E11 Lo) starburst and Seyfert galaxies. HNC 1-0 is detected in 9, CN 1-0 is detected in 10 and CN 2-1 in 7 of the galaxies. We also report the first detection of HC3N (10-9) emission in Arp220. The excitation of HNC and CN emission requires densities n > 10E4 cm-3. We compare their intensities to that of the usual high density tracer HCN. The I(HCN)/I(HNC}) and I(HCN)/I(CN) 1-0 line intensity ratios vary significantly, from 0.5 to >6, among the galaxies. This implies that the actual properties…
We present sensitive interferometric 12CO, 13CO and HCN observations of the barred spiral galaxy NGC7479, known to be one of the few barred galaxies with a continuous gas-filled bar. We focus on the investigation and interpretation of 12CO/13CO line intensity ratios, which is facilitated by having more than 90% of the flux in our interferometer maps. The global (9kpc by 2.5kpc) value of the 12CO/13CO ratio is high at 20 - 40. On smaller scales (~ 750 pc), the ratio is found to vary dramatically, reaching values > 30 in large parts of the bar, but dropping to values ~ 5, typical for galactic di…
We have studied the feedback influence that the central engine of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068 may have on the chemistry of the 200 pc circumnuclear gas disk (CND). With this purpose, we have conducted a multi-species/multi-transition survey of molecular gas in the CND of NGC 1068 using the IRAM 30m telescope. Abundances of several molecular species have been estimated, including HCN, CN, CS, HCO+, SiO and HOC+. We report on the detection of significant SiO emission in this galaxy, as well as on the first extragalactic detection of the active radical HOC+. We conclude that the chemistry of th…
The VLA and the BIMA array were used to obtain high resolution (10-20") observations of C+, traced by the C91a recombination line at 8.6 GHz, and the dense molecular gas, traced by HCN and HCO+(1-0), of the photon dominated region (PDR) associated with the reflection nebula NGC 2023. Using the VLA, continuum emission is detected at 8.6 GHz from a faint HII region associated with HD 37903. The C91a emission originates from a 0.4 pc long filament, extending from the east to the south of the exciting star HD 37903. Within the filament three C91a clumps can be distinguished, each associated with f…
We present new interferometric observations of the 12CO(1-0), 12CO(2-1) and HCN (1-0) molecular line emission in NGC 3227 obtained with the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer (PdBI). We achieved an unprecedented angular resolution in the 12CO(2-1) line of about 0.6'' corresponding to only about 80pc at a distance of 17.3Mpc. The mapped 12CO emission is concentrated in the inner 8'' and accounts for 20% of the total 30m CO line flux. The 12CO emission is resolved into an asymmetric nuclear ring with a diameter of about 3''. The HCN line emission is mostly unresolved at our resolution of ~2.4''…
We have conducted near-infrared (J- and H-band) surface photometry for two early type barred galaxies, NGC 3412 and NGC 3941. The bulges of NGC 3412 and NGC 3941 show isophotal twists which indicate that they are triaxial. NGC 3412 has a very short bar and its bulge is more centrally concentrated than that of NGC 3941. The unusually short bar and the centrally concentrated triaxial bulge of NGC 3412 might be the result of bar dissolution. The colors of the nuclear region of NGC 3941 resemble those of the blue nuclei, implying the presence of young stellar populations.
This paper presents a detailed study of the chemistry in the outflow associated with the low-mass protostar NGC1333-IRAS2A down to 3" (650 AU) scales. Millimeter-wavelength aperture-synthesis observations from the OVRO and BIMA interferometers and (sub)millimeter single-dish observations from the Onsala 20m telescope and CSO are presented. The interaction of the highly collimated protostellar outflow with a molecular condensation ~15000 AU from the central protostar is clearly traced by molecular species such as HCN, SiO, SO, CS, and CH3OH. Especially SiO traces a narrow high velocity componen…
We present aperture synthesis high-resolution (~ 7" x 3") observations in CO(J=1-0) line, HCN(J=1-0) line, and 95 GHz continuum emission toward the central (~ 1.5 kpc) region of the nearby barred spiral galaxy M 83 with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array. Our high-resolution CO(J=1-0) mosaic map depicts the presence of molecular ridges along the leading sides of the stellar bar and nuclear twin peak structure. On the other hand, we found the distribution of the HCN(J=1-0) line emission which traces dense molecular gas (nH2 > a few x 10^4 cm^-3) shows nuclear single peak structure and coincides well…
We have performed for the first time in the literature a 2D structural analysis on the barred lenticular and face--on galaxies NGC 4608 and NGC 5701. The results indicate that these galaxies either have never had large disks or their disks were almost completely destroyed by their strong bars, due to secular evolution processes. We discuss these surprising conclusions checking for signs of secular evolution, considering bar forming instabilities, and suggesting, based on N-body simulations, a new mechanism to form bars in spheroids, which includes non-spherical halos. Quantitative predictions …
Ultra Luminous Infra-Red Galaxies (ULIRGs) -- gas-rich mergers harboring the most extreme star-forming conditions encountered in the local Universe -- are thought to re-enact the galaxy formation processes we are only barely able to glimpse in the distant Universe. Combining new single-dish molecular line observations of 12CO, 13CO, HCO+, HCN, and CS towards the two ULIRGs Arp220 and NGC6240 with existing data in the literature, we have compiled the most extensive molecular line data-sets to date of such galaxies. The data allow us to put strong constraints on the properties of the dense star …
The interstellar medium of Centaurus A (NGC 5128) has been studied extensively in recent years, using mostly molecular lines tracing low to medium density gas (500 to several $10^3$ cm$^{-3}$). The amount and distribution of the dense molecular gas was largely unknown. Here we present new millimeter data of the HCN(1-0), CS(2-1), and CS(3-2) rotational transitions towards the nearby radio galaxy Centaurus A observed with the SEST on La Silla, Chile. We obtained spectra of the HCN(1-0) emission which traces dense 10$^4$ cm$^{-3}$ molecular gas at the center and along the prominent dust lane at …
We have used 2D Fabry-Perot absorption-line spectroscopy of the SB0 galaxy NGC 7079 to measure its bar pattern speed, $\om$. As in all previous cases of bar pattern speed measurements, we find a fast bar. We estimate that NGC 7079 has been undisturbed for at least the past Gyr or roughly 8 bar rotations, long enough for the bar to have slowed down significantly through dynamical friction if the disk is sub-maximal.
We present direct kinematic evidence for bar streaming motions in two active galaxies with boxy stellar bulges. The Hawaii Imaging Fabry-Perot Interferometer was used on the Canada-France-Hawaii 3.6-m telescope and the University of Hawaii 2.2-m telescope to derive the two-dimensional velocity field of the line-emitting gas in the disks of the Sc galaxy NGC 3079 and the Sb galaxy NGC 4388. In contrast to previous work based on long-slit data, the detection of the bar potential from the Fabry-Perot data does not rely on the existence of inner Lindblad resonances or strong bar-induced shocks. Si…
Double bars have been proposed as a means of transporting molecular gas past inner Lindblad resonances into the nuclear regions, where it can fuel active or starburst nuclei. Thus far, the existence of double bars has been determined predominantly through analysis of near infrared images, which can tell us little about the dynamics and inflow rates of these systems. We have observed two double bar galaxy candidates (NGC 2273 and NGC 5728) in CO J=1-0 with the Owens Valley Radio Observatory Millimeter Array. Despite the similarity in the near infrared images of these galaxies, we see rather dif…
We have made observations of the \ion{H}{1} in the southern ringed barred spiral galaxies NGC~1433 and NGC~6300 with the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA), the main goal being to test the resonance theory for the origin of these rings. NGC~1433 is the prototypical ringed barred spiral, and displays distinct \ion{H}{1}~counterparts to its nuclear ring, inner ring, outer pseudoring, and plume-like features. The $L_{4}$ and $L_{5}$ regions at corotation, as well as the bar itself, are relatively devoid of neutral atomic hydrogen. By associating the inner ring of NGC~1433 with the inner sec…
We performed SPH simulations to study the nuclear morphology of a barred galaxy NGC 4314. We have constructed the mass models based on the results of a profile decomposition into disk, bulge, and bar components. Our models have three different nuclear structures according to the assumption about the nuclear bar: no nuclear bar, a synchronous nuclear bar and a fast nuclear bar. Our SPH simulations show that the morphology of the nuclear region of NGC 4314 which is characterized by an elongated ring/spiral of newly formed stars and HII regions, aligned nearly parallel to the primary bar can be u…
We present surface photometry and stellar kinematics of NGC 2950, which is a nearby and undisturbed SB0 galaxy hosting two nested stellar bars. We use the Tremaine-Weinberg method to measure the pattern speed of the primary bar. This also permits us to establish directly and for the first time that the two nested bars are rotating with different pattern speeds, and in particular that the rotation frequency of the secondary bar is higher than that of the primary one.
We present surface photometry and stellar kinematics of NGC 4431, a barred dwarf galaxy in the Virgo cluster undergoing a tidal interaction with one of its neighbors, NGC 4436. We measured its bar pattern speed using the Tremaine-Weinberg method, and derived the ratio of the corotation radius, D_L, to the bar semi-major axis, a_B. We found D_L/a_B=0.6^{+1.2}_{-0.4} at 99% confidence level. Albeit with large uncertainty, the probability that the bar ends close to its corotation radius (i.e., 1.0 \leq D_L/a_B \leq 1.4) is about twice as likely as that the bar is much shorter than corotation radi…
We characterize the stellar populations in the nuclear region of the barred spiral galaxy NGC 4900 using the integral field spectrometer OASIS and the synthesis code LavalSB and the code from Mollá & Garc\'ıa-Vargas (2000) for the young ($< 10$ Myr) and the old stellar populations, respectively. The high spatial resolution of the instrument allows us to find an old population uniformely distributed and younger regions located at the end of the galaxy bar and on each side of a nuclear bar.
We measured the bar pattern speed, $\om$, of the SB0 galaxy NGC 1023 using the Tremaine-Weinberg (1984) method with stellar-absorption slit spectroscopy. The morphology and kinematics of the \hi gas outside NGC 1023 suggest it suffered a tidal interaction, sometime in the past, with one of its dwarf companions. At present, however, the optical disc is relaxed. If the disc had been stabilized by a massive dark matter halo and formed its bar in the interaction, then the bar would have to be slow. We found $\om = 5.0 \pm 1.8$ \kmsa, so that the bar ends near its co-rotation radius. It is therefor…
Detailed neutral hydrogen observations have been obtained of the large barred spiral galaxy NGC 3992 and its three small companion galaxies, UGC 6923, UGC 6940, and UGC 6969. For the main galaxy, the HI distribution is regular with a low level radial extension outside the stellar disc. However, at exactly the region of the bar, there is a pronounced central HI hole in the gas distribution. Likely gas has been transported inwards by the bar and because of the emptyness of the hole no large accretion events can have happened in recent galactic times. The gas kinematics is very regular and it is …
We give a brief description of a new model for non-circular motions in disk galaxy velocity fields, that does not invoke epicycles. We assume non-circular motions to stem from a bar-like or oval distortion to the potential, as could arise from a triaxial halo or a bar in the mass distribution of the baryons. We apply our model to the high-quality CO and Halpha kinematics of NGC 2976 presented by Simon et al. 2003; it fits the data as well as their model with unrealistic radial flows, but yields a steeper rotation curve. Our analysis and other evidence suggests that NGC 2976 hosts a bar, implyi…
We present the results of the CO mapping observations of the barred spiral galaxy NGC3504 with the Nobeyama 45-m telescope. The distribution of the molecular gas shows offset ridges which correspond to the distribution of HII regions along the bar. The velocity perpendicular to the bar decreases abruptly at the ridge. The velocity change implies that the molecular gas changes the direction of its motion to parallel to the bar at the ridge. Since the position angle of the major axis of the bar and the line of nodes are almost the same in NGC 3504, an upper limit to the pattern speed of the bar …
NGC 4340 is a double-barred SB0 galaxy in the Virgo cluster (Wozniak et al. 1995). Here, we present evidence that this galaxy also posseses a luminous stellar nuclear ring of relatively old stars with little or no gas. The ring lies just outside the inner bar, at the probable inner inner Lindblad resonance (IILR) of the outer bar. Careful inspection of the isophotes and unsharp masks shows that the two bars are slightly misaligned, which suggests they may be independently rotating.
We have applied the Tremaine-Weinberg continuity equation method to derive the bar pattern speed in the SB(r)b galaxy NGC 2523 and the SB(r)0/a galaxy NGC 4245 using the Calcium Triplet absorption lines. These galaxies were selected because they have strong inner rings which can be used as independent tracers of the pattern speed. The pattern speed of NGC 2523 is 26.4 $\pm$ 6.1 km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$, assuming an inclination of 49.7$^{\circ}$ and a distance of 51.0 Mpc. The pattern speed of NGC 4245 is 75.5 $\pm$ 31.3 km s$^{-1}$ kpc$^{-1}$, assuming an inclination of 35.4$^{\circ}$ and a dist…
NGC 5850 is a prototype of double-barred galaxy (Friedli et al. 1996) classified as SBb(sr) I-II (Higdon et al. 1998; Prieto et al. 1997). This kind of system is primordial to understand the physical mechanism responsible for feeding galaxy nuclei and boost the star formation rate. The CO(1-0) emission has been mapped in NGC 5850, i) in the very center, using the IRAM Plateau de Bure interferometer, to reach a 2.4\arcsec$\times$1.5\arcsec\ (PA$=$$-165^\circ$) spatial resolution, and ii) in the primary bar with the IRAM-30m telescope, with a 22\arcsec beam. We have found CO emission in the cent…
Emission-line optical spectrophotometry for 55 H II regions in the prominent southern barred spiral galaxy NGC 1365 is presented. Nebular diagnostic diagrams such as [N II]/[O II] and [S II]/[O II] versus [O II]/{O III] show that the H II regions of the barred galaxy have the same range of physical conditions as found in non-barred late-type galaxies. Extinction is moderately high across the disc and there is evidence for a slight trend of extinction with galactocentric distance; the logarithmic extinction at H-beta falls from about c = 1.2 in the centre to 0.6 -- 0.8 in the outer regions. The…
We present 13CO(1-0) and 12CO(2-1) aperture synthesis maps of the barred spiral galaxy NGC1530. The angular resolutions are respectively 3''.1 and 1''.6. Both transitions show features similar to the 12CO(1-0) map, with a nuclear feature (a ring or unresolved spiral arms) surrounded by two curved arcs. The average line ratios are 12CO(1-0)/13CO(1-0)=9.3 and 12CO(2-1)/12CO(1-0)=0.7. The 12CO/13CO ratio is lower in the circumnuclear ring (6-8) than in the arcs (11-15). We fit the observed line ratios by escape probability models, and deduce that the gas density is probably higher in the nuclear …
We present sensitive, high resolution observations of neutral hydrogen (HI) in the unusually gas-rich, oval distortion of the Seyfert galaxy NGC4151. The gas dynamics of the oval are found to be consistent with those of a kinematically weak bar, fully confirming previous suggestions for the presence of a fat bar, and, for the first time, individual gaseous features in the bar are spatially resolved. In particular, the two bright regions close to the leading edges of the bar in NGC4151 exhibit kinematics strikingly similar to the signature of bar shocks seen in gas-dynamical simulations, and de…
A remarkable structure is observed in the innermost regions of the barred galaxy NGC 1415 : a small stellar bar, bright circumnuclear ionized gas seen in Halpha, two bright ionized gas sources, seen in Halpha, just beyond the ends of the small bar and a boxy distribution of optical continuum. We have developed a mass distribution model consisting in disk, a bulge, and a bar to approximate t he observed central morphology and its surface brightness. In order to reproduce the observed optical brightness distribution a two-component bar was used, with one component to model the elongated isophote…
