The dynamics of a four dimensional generally covariant modified SU(N) Yang-Mills action, which depends on the complex structure of spacetime and not its metric, is studied. A general solution of the complex structure integrability conditions is found in the context of the G{2,2) Grassmannian manifold, which admits a global SL(4,C) symmetry group. A convenient definition of the physical energy and momentum permits the study of the vacuum and soliton sectors. The model has a set of conformally SU(2,2) invariant vacua and a set of Poincare invariant vacua. An algebraic integrability condition of the complex structure classifies the solitonic surfaces into three classes (families). The first class (spacetimes with two principal null directions) contains the Kerr-Newman complex structure, which has fermionic (electron-like) properties. That is the correct fermionic gyromagnetic ratio (g=2) and it satisfies the correct electron equations of motion. The conjugate complex structure determines the antisoliton, which has the same mass and opposite charge. The fermionic solitons are differentiated from the complex structure bosonic modes by the periodicity condition on compactified spacetime. The non-periodicity of the found solitonic complex structures is proved. The modification of the Yang-Mills action has an essential consequence to the classical potential. It generates a linear static potential instead of the Coulomb-like (1/r) potential of the ordinary Yang-Mills action. This linear potential implies that for every pure geometric soliton there are N solitonic gauge field excitations, which are perturbatively confined. The present model advocates a solitonic unification scheme without supersymmetry and/or superstrings.
Under a Scherk-Schwarz compactification, the AdS soliton and black brane provide a dual description to a confinement/deconfinement phase transition. We extend this construction to asymptotically Lifshitz spacetimes. In particular, we show that there must be a phase transition between the soliton and black hole if the solutions exist. We also construct these solutions numerically and compute the phase diagram.
In presence of string solitons, index theorems for the generalised Dirac operators have to be revisited. We show that in supersymmetric configurations the fermionic operators decouple, so that there are no mixing effects between different fermions in the index theorems. We extend the index theorems in presence of torsion to the generic case of manifolds with boundary, which naturally appear in string solutions and apply this result to the soliton solution by Callan, Harvey and Strominger.
The excitation spectrum of spin-Peierls antiferromagnets is discussed taking into acount phonon dynamics but treating inter-chain elastic couplings in mean field theory. This gives a ladder of soliton -anti-soliton boundstates, with no soliton continuum, until soliton deconfinement takes place at a transition into a non-dimerized phase.
We explicitly construct all kink solitons arising in the recent study of Auzzi, Bolognesi, and Shifman of a monopole confinement problem in ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric QCD. In particular, we show that all finite-energy kink solitons must be BPS.
The large N limit of fermionic vectors models is studied using bilocal variables, in the framework of a collective field theory approach. The large N configuration is determined completely using only classical solutions of the model. Further, the Bethe-Salpeter equations of the model are cast as a Green's function problem. One of the main results of this work is to show that this Green's function is in fact the large N bilocal itself.
We consider the fermionic bound states associated with a soliton-antisoliton pair in 1+1 dimensions which have zero energy when the solitons are infinitely far apart. We calculate the energies of these states when the solitons are separated by a finite distance. The energies decay exponentially with the distance between the soliton and antisoliton. When the fermion mass is much larger than the boson mass, the energy simplifies substantially. These energies may be interpreted as a contribution to the effective potential between the soliton and antisoliton. The character of this contribution dep…
In this paper we show how to quantize Hopf solitons using the Finkelstein-Rubinstein approach. Hopf solitons can be quantized as fermions if their Hopf charge is odd. Symmetries of classical minimal energy configurations induce loops in configuration space which give rise to constraints on the wave function. These constraints depend on whether the given loop is contractible. Our method is to exploit the relationship between the configuration spaces of the Faddeev-Hopf and Skyrme models provided by the Hopf fibration. We then use recent results in the Skyrme model to determine whether loops are…
We consider an integrable conformally invariant two dimensional model associated to the affine Kac-Moody algebra SL(3). It possesses four scalar fields and six Dirac spinors. The theory does not possesses a local Lagrangian since the spinor equations of motion present interaction terms which are bilinear in the spinors. There exists a submodel presenting an equivalence between a U(1) vector current and a topological current, which leads to a confinement of the spinors inside the solitons. We calculate the one-soliton and two-soliton solutions using a procedure which is a hybrid of the dressing…
We study effects of backreaction of the fermionic modes localized by the baby Skyrmion in the (2+1)-dimensional Skyrme model. It is shown that there is a tower of fermionic modes of two different types, localized by the soliton, however there is only one fermionic level, which flows from positive to negative value as coupling increases. Considering the strong coupling regime we observe that the coupling of the bosonic field to the fermions may strongly deform the Skyrmion, in particular the regions of negative topological charge density appear.
We demonstrate an unambiguous and robust method for computing fermionic corrections to the energies of classical background field configurations. We consider the particular case of a sequence of background field configurations that interpolates continuously between the trivial vacuum and a widely separated soliton/antisoliton pair in 1+1 dimensions. Working in the continuum, we use phase shifts, the Born approximation, and Levinson's theorem to avoid ambiguities of renormalization procedure and boundary conditions. We carry out the calculation analytically at both ends of the interpolation and…
We consider different methods of calculating the (fractional) fermion number of solitons based on the heat kernel expansion. We derive a formula for the localized eta function a more systematic version of the derivative expansion for spectral assymmetry and that provides a more systematic version of the derivative expansion for spectral asymmetry and compute the fermion number in a multiflavour extension of the Goldstone-Wilczek model. We also propose an improved expansionof the heat kernelthat allows the tackling ofthe convergence issues and permits an automated computation of the coefficients
We argue that the compact three dimensional electrodynamics with massless fermions is always confining, in spite of the bare interaction between the magnetic monopoles being rendered logarithmic by fermions. The effect is caused by screening by other dipoles, which transforms the logarithmic back into the Coulomb interaction at large distances. Possible implications for the chiral symmetry breaking for fermions are discussed, and the global phase diagram of the theory is proposed.
We consider a two-dimensional integrable and conformally invariant field theory possessing two Dirac spinors and three scalar fields. The interaction couples bilinear terms in the spinors to exponentials of the scalars. Its integrability properties are based on the sl(2) affine Kac-Moody algebra, and it is a simple example of the so-called conformal affine Toda theories coupled to matter fields. We show, using bosonization techniques, that the classical equivalence between a U(1) Noether current and the topological current holds true at the quantum level, and then leads to a bag model like mec…
The so-called conformal affine Toda theory coupled to the matter fields (CATM), associated to the $\hat{sl}(2)$ affine Lie algebra, is studied. The conformal symmetry is fixed by setting a connection to zero, then one defines an off-critical model, the affine Toda model coupled to the matter (ATM). The quantum version of this reduction process is discussed by means of the perturbative Lagrangian viewpoint, showing that the ATM theory is a spontaneously broken and reduced version of the CATM model. We show, using bosonization techniques that the off-critical theory decouples into a sine-Gordon …
We study the soliton type solutions arising in two-dimensional quantum chromodynamics (QCD$_{2}$). The so-called generalized sine-Gordon model (GSG) arises as the low-energy effective action of bosonized QCD$_{2}$ for unequal quark mass parameters, and it has been shown that the relevant solitons describe the normal and exotic baryonic spectrum of QCD$_{2}$ [JHEP(03)(2007)(055)]. In the first part of this chapter we classify the soliton and kink type solutions of the sl(3) GSG model. Related to the GSG model we consider the sl(3) affine Toda model coupled to matter fields (Dirac spinors) (ATM)…
We present a simple algorithm to implement the generalized derivative expansion introduced previously by L-H. Chan, and apply it to the calculation of the one-loop mass correction to the classical soliton mass in the 1+1 dimensional Jacobi model. We then show how this derivative expansion approach implies that the total (bosonic plus fermionic) mass correction in an N=1 supersymmetric soliton model is determined solely by the asymptotic values (and derivatives) of the fermionic background potential. For a static soliton the total mass correction is $-m/(2π)$, in agreement with recent analyses …
A central theme in many body physics is emergence - new properties arise when several particles are brought together. Particularly fascinating is the idea that the quantum statistics may be an emergent property. This was first noted in the Skyrme model of nuclear matter, where a theory formulated entirely in terms of a bosonic order parameter field contains fermionic excitations. These excitations are smooth field textures, and believed to describe neutrons and protons. We argue that a similar phenomenon occurs in topological insulators when superconductivity gaps out their surface states. Her…
Shafranov's virial theorem implies that nontrivial magnetohydrodynamical equilibrium configurations must be supported by externally supplied currents. Here we extend the virial theorem to field theory, where it relates to Derrick's scaling argument on soliton stability. We then employ virial arguments to investigate a realistic field theory model of a two-component plasma, and conclude that stable localized solitons can exist in the bulk of a finite density plasma. These solitons entail a nontrivial electric field which implies that purely magnetohydrodynamical arguments are insufficient for d…
Deep insights into the possible infrared dynamics of strongly-coupled nonAbelian gauge theories such as QCD come from the analyses of ${\cal N}=1$ or ${\cal N}=2$ supersymmetric gauge theories. Central in the whole discussion will be the topological soliton monopoles and vortices and their quantum dynamics. We review the arguments that nonAbelian monopoles, free from the classic "difficulties", can be defined semi-classically via the topology and stability connection to the better understood nonAbelian vortices. Recent results on $CP^{N-1}$ models on $2D$ worldsheet of finite width, establish …
We review the physics of topological objects in QCD. Topics include: solitons, vortices, magnetic monopoles, instantons, (effective theories of) confinement.
We show that space-time evolution of one-dimensional fermionic systems is described by nonlinear equations of soliton theory. We identify a space-time dependence of a matrix element of fermionic systems related to the {\it Orthogonality Catastrophe} or {boundary states} with the $τ$-function of the modified KP-hierarchy. The established relation allows to apply the apparatus of soliton theory to the study of non-linear aspects of quantum dynamics. We also describe a {\it bosonization in momentum space} - a representation of a fermion operator by a Bose field in the presence of a boundary state…
The index theorem implies that there are fermionic states localized on a soliton. Presence of these modes may significantly alter the pattern of interaction between the solitons. As a particular example we investigate the chiral magnetic Skyrmions coupled to spin-isospin fermions. It is shown that there are sequences of fermionic modes localized on the Skyrmions. We investigate the pattern of interaction between the soltions with localized modes and proved the existence of stable system of magnetic Skyrmions bounded by the strong attractive dipole interaction mediated by the chargeless fermion…
We consider a broad class of consistently reduced Manin-Radul supersymmetric KP hierarchies (MR-SKP) which are supersymmetric analogs of the ordinary bosonic constrained KP models. Compatibility of these reductions with the MR fermionic isospectral flows is achieved via appropriate modification of the latter preserving their (anti-)commutation algebra. Unlike the general unconstrained MR-SKP case, Darboux-Backlund transformations do preserve the fermionic isospectral flows of the reduced MR-SKP hierarchies. This allows for a systematic derivation of explicit Berezinian solutions for the super-…

It is very plausible that confinement in QCD comes from linking of Wilson loops to finite-thickness vortices with magnetic fluxes corresponding to the center of the gauge group. The vortices are solitons of a gauge-invariant QCD action representing the generation of gluon mass. There are a number of other solitonic states of this action. We discuss here what we call nexus solitons, in which for gauge group SU(N), up to N vortices meet a a center, or nexus, provided that the total flux of the vortices adds to zero (mod N). There are fundamentally two kinds of nexuses: Quasi-Abelian, which can b…
We study the soliton modes carrying fractional quantum numbers in one-dimensional superfluids. In the $s$-wave pairing superfluid with the phase of the order parameter twisted by opposite angles $\pm φ/2$ at the two ends there is an emergent complex $Z_2$ soliton mode carrying fractional spin number $φ/(2π)$ if there is only one pairing branch. We demonstrate that in finite systems of length $L$, the spin density for one pairing branch in the presence of a single soliton mode consists of two terms, a localized spin density profile carrying fractional quantum number $φ/(2π)$, and a uniform back…
In the framework of three dimensional extended supergravity theories, we demonstrate that there exist non-trivial Killing spinors over BPS soliton configurations, even when the space-time is asymptotically conical. We also show that there are no physical fermionic zero modes on these backgrounds. We further generalize these results to the case of semilocal systems.
Nonlinearities imbedded in the Lagrange density for non-Abelian gauge theories produce solutions to the Yang-Mills Maxwell equations that describe spatially extended chromostatic condensates. For solutions in spherically-symmetric SU(2) the topological structures separating such condensates provide a specific solitonic description of color confinement. The strong Conjecture The confinement mechanism for QCD involves a domain wall of topological (CP-odd) charge separating the interior volume of hadrons from an exterior volume. To explain the consequences of this conjecture we describe spherical…
We construct the N=2, D=9 supergravity theory up to the quartic fermionic terms and derive the supersymmetry transformation rules for the fields modulo cubic fermions. We consider a class of p-brane solutions of this theory, the stainless p-branes, which cannot be isotropically oxidized into higher dimensions. The new stainless elementary membrane and elementary particle solutions are found. It is explicitly verified that these solutions preserve half of the supersymmetry.
An overview of hadron spectroscopy obtained from an extension of superconformal field theory of de Alfaro, Fubini and Furlan, which originates from the supergauge transformation of Wess and Zumino and influenced on the string theory are preseted. The standard model of hadron dynamics is based on gauge theory. In the 4 dimensional ($4D$) QCD Lagrangian, the Faddeev-Popov ghost that appears to compensate unphysical degrees of freedom in internal fermion propagators can be regarded as the partner of a fermion. Donaldson formulated a $5D$ gauge theory. Fubini and Rabinovici formulated superconform…
We examine the effect of one loop quantum corrections on the formation of nontopological solitons in a strongly coupled scalar-fermionic Yukawa theory. The exact one fermion loop contribution is incorporated by using a nonlocal method to correct the local derivative expansion approximation (DE) of the effective action. As the Yukawa coupling is increased we find that the nonlocal corrections play an increasingly important role. The corrections cause the scalar field to increase in depth while maintaining its size. This increases the energy of the bag configuration, but this is compensated for …
We consider two types of "dimension bubbles", which are viewed as 4d nontopological solitons that emerge from a 5d theory with a compact extra dimension. The size of the extra dimension varies rapidly within the domain wall of the soliton. We consider the cases of type I (II) bubbles where the size of the extra dimension inside the bubble is much larger (smaller) than outside. Type I bubbles with thin domain walls can be stabilized by the entrapment of various particle modes whose masses become much smaller inside than outside the bubble. This is demonstrated here for the cases of scalar boson…
We discuss the phase structure of N D4 branes wrapped on a temporal (Euclidean) and a spatial circle, in terms of the near-horizon AdS geometries. This system has been studied previously to understand four dimensional pure SU(N) Yang-Mills theory (YM4) through holography. In the usual treatment of the subject, the phase transition between the AdS soliton and the black D4 brane is interpreted as the strong coupling continuation of the confinement/deconfinement transition in YM4. We show that this interpretation is not valid, since the black D4 brane and the deconfinement phase of YM4 have diffe…
We study the gravity dual of four dimensional pure Yang-Mills theory through D4 branes, as proposed by Witten (holographic QCD). In this holographic QCD, it has been widely believed that the confinement phase in the pure Yang-Mills theory corresponds to the AdS D4 soliton in gravity and the deconfinement phase corresponds to the black D4 brane. We inspect this conjecture carefully and show that the correspondence between the black D4 brane and the deconfinement phase is not correct. Instead, by using a slightly different set up, we find an alternative gravity solution called "localized soliton…
Coincident D2-branes in open N=2 fermionic string theory with a B-field background yield an integrable modified U(n) sigma model on noncommutative R^{2,1}. This model provides a showcase for an established method (the `dressing approach') to generate solutions for integrable field equations, even in the noncommutative case. We demonstrate the technique by constructing moving U(1) and U(2) solitons and by computing their energies. It is outlined how to derive multi-soliton configurations with arbitrary relative motion; they correspond to D0-branes moving inside the D2-branes.
In this paper we generalize the fermionic approach to the KP hierarchy sudgested in the papers of Kyoto school 1981-1984 (Sato,Jimbo, Miwa...). The main idea is that the components of the intertwiningoperators are in some sense a generalization of free fermions for $gl_{\infty}$. We formulate in terms of intertwining operators the integrable hierarchies related to Kac-Moody Lie algebra symmetries. We write down explicitly the bosonization of these operators for different choices of Heisenberg subalgebras. These different realizations lead to different hierarchies of soliton equations. For exam…
Quantum electrodynamics in three spacetime dimensions, with one massless fermion species, is studied using a non-perturbative variational approach. Quantization of the theory follows Dirac's Hamiltonian procedure, with a gauge invariant factorization of the physical degrees of freedom. Due to pair condensation in the vacuum state, the symmetry of parity is spontaneously broken. As a consequence, fermionic quasi-particles propagating in the condensate can be identified and are seen to possess a confining dynamical mass, while the propagating physical electromagnetic mode also acquires a non-van…
We show that a spectral wall, i.e., an obstacle in the dynamics of a bosonic soliton, which arises due to the transition of a normal mode into the continuum spectrum, exists after coupling the original bosonic model to fermions. This spectral wall can be experienced if the boson or fermion field is in an excited state. Furthermore, while passing through a spectral wall, an incoming kink-fermion bound state can be separated into purely bosonic kink, which continues to move to spatial infinity and a fermionic cloud that spreads in the region before the wall.
We construct gray soliton configurations, which move at constant speeds, in holographic superfluids for the first time. Since there should be no dissipation for a moving soliton to exist, we use the simplest holographic superfluid model at zero temperature, considering both the standard and alternative quantizations. For comparison purpose, we first investigate black solitons in the zero temperature holographic superfluids, which are static configurations. Then we focus on the numerical construction of gray solitons under both quantizations, which interpolate between the (static) black soliton…
We determine the gluonic spectral function $SU(3)$ Yang-Mills theory as well as we found fermionic spectral functions in the strong quenched QED where we found new solutions. Our novel technique provides solutions with the usual branch cut for propagators while not showing any pole structure at the first Riemann sheet (identical with entire complex plane) of complex square of momentum. Implications and further utilizations are briefly adressed for QCD and Standard model calculations.
