In most configurations aimed at generating entangled photons based on spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC), the generated pairs of photons are required to be entangled in only one degree of freedom. Any distinguishing information coming from the other degrees of freedom that characterize the photon should be suppressed to avoid correlations with the degree of freedom of interest. However, this suppression is not always possible. Here, we show how the frequency information available affects the purity of the two-photon state in space, revealing a correlation between the frequency and the space degrees of freedom. This correlation should be taken into account to calculate the total amount of entanglement between the photons.
We present a dissipative protocol to engineer two $^{87}Rb$ atoms into a form of three-dimensional entangled state via spontaneous emission. The combination of coupling between ground states via microwave fields and dissipation induced by spontaneous emission make the current scheme deterministic and a stationary entangled state can always be achieved without state initialization. Moreover, this scheme can be straightforwardly generalized to preparation of an $N$-dimensional entangled state in principle.
An experimental scheme is proposed for building massively multipartite entangled states using both the spatial and the frequency modes of an optical parametric oscillator. We provide analytical forms of the entangled states using the squeezed eigenmodes of Heisenberg equations, a.k.a. the nullifiers of the corresponding graph state. This scheme can generate, in parallel, several cluster states described by sparsely connected, bicolorable graph states, usable for one-way quantum computing. We indicate the experimentally accessible quantum graphs, depending on the squeezing parameter.
A class of centrosymmetric molecules support excitons with a well-defined quasi-angular momentum. Cofacial arrangements of these molecules can be engineered so that quantum cutting produces a pair of excitons with angular momenta that are maximally entangled. The Bell state constituents can subsequently travel in opposite directions down molecular chains as ballistic wave packets. This is a direct excitonic analog to the entangled polarization states produced by the spontaneous parametric downconversion of light. As in optical settings, the ability to produce Bell states should enable foundati…
Starting from the standard Hamiltonian describing the optical non-linear process of spontaneous parametric down-conversion, we theoretically show that the generated entangled photon-pairs carry non-negligible orbital angular momentum in the degrees of freedom of relative movement in the type-II cases due to spatial symmetry breaking. We also show that the orbital angular momentum carried by photon-pairs in these degrees of freedom escapes detection in the traditional measurement scheme, which demands development of new techniques for further experimental investigations.
Entangled photon-pair sources based on spontaneous parametric processes are widely used in photonic quantum information experiments. In this paper, we clarify the relationship between average photon-pair number and the visibility of two-photon interference (TPI) using those entanglement sources. We consider sources that generate distinguishable and indistinguishable entangled photon pairs, assuming coincidence measurements that use threshold detectors. We present formulas for the TPI visibility of a polarization entanglement that take account of all the high-order multi-pair emission events. M…
We present an experimental proposal for the generation of photon triplets based on third-order spontaneous para- metric downconversion in thin optical fibers. Our analysis includes expressions for the quantum state, which de- scribes the photon triplets and for the generation rate in terms of all experimental parameters. We also present, for a specific source design, numerically calculated generation rates.
Considering the paradigmatic case of a cloud of two-level atoms interacting through common vacuum modes, we show how cooperative spontaneous emission, which is at the origin of superradiance, leads the system to long-lived entangled states at late times. These subradiant modes are characterized by an entanglement between all particles, independently of their geometrical configuration. While there is no threshold on the interaction strength necessary to entangle all particles, stronger interactions lead to longer-lived entanglement.
We report the generation of polarization entangled photon pairs in the 1550-nm wavelength band using spontaneous four-wave mixing in a dispersion-shifted fiber loop. The use of the fiber-loop configuration made it possible to generate polarization entangled states very stably. With accidental coincidences subtracted, we obtained coincidence fringes with >90 % visibilities, and observed a violation of Bell's inequality by seven standard deviations. We also confirmed the preservation of the quantum correlation between the photons even after they had been separated by 20 km of optical fiber.
Generation and characterization of entanglement are crucial tasks in quantum information processing. A hypothesis testing scheme for entanglement has been formulated. Three designs were proposed to test the entangled photon states created by the spontaneous parametric down conversion. The time allocations between the measurement vectors were designed to consider the anisotropic deviation of the generated photon states from the maximally entangled states. The designs were evaluated in terms of the p-value based on the observed data. It has been experimentally demonstrated that the optimal time …
We address the intrinsic multimode nature of the quantum state of light obtained by pulsed spontaneous parametric downconversion and develop a theoretical model based only on experimentally accessible quantities. We exploit the pairwise entanglement as a resource for conditional multimode measurements and derive closed formulas for the detection probability and the density matrix of the conditional states. We present a set of experiments performed to validate our model in different conditions that are in excellent agreement with experimental data. Finally, we evaluate nonGaussianity of the con…
We experimentally demonstrate that paired photons generated in different sections of a down-conversion cone, when some of the interacting waves show Poynting vector walk-off, carry different spatial correlations, and therefore a different degree of spatial entanglement. This is shown to be in agreement with theoretical results. We also discuss how this azimuthal distinguishing information of the down-conversion cone is relevant for the implementation of quantum sources aimed at the generation of entanglement in other degrees of freedom, such as polarization.
Spontaneous down conversion in metal-dielectric interface in case of oblique laser excitation is considered. In this case it is possible to generate pairs of polarization entangled surface plasmon polaritons with high efficiency if to use excitation angle corresponding to the Kretschmann configuration for generated plasmons. The efficiency can be additionally enlarged if to use properly nanostructured metallic film allowing one to directly excite surface plasmon polaritons and to fulfill phase matching condition of them with generated surface plasmon polaritons.
We suggest the generation of photon pairs in a thermally induced nonlinear periodically-poled silica fiber by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. Photons are generated directly in eigenstates of optical angular momentum. Photons in a pair can be entangled in these states as well as in frequencies. We identify suitable spatial and polarization modes giving an efficient nonlinear interaction. By changing the pump field properties both narrow- and broad-band down-converted fields can be obtained.
Two entangled two-level Unruh-DeWitt detectors, which are in rest, spontaneously loose entanglement when at least any one of them is not isolated from the environment quantum fields. For eternal interaction between the detectors and environment, the spontaneous emission from the detectors' exited states and vacuum fluctuations of field influence this negative effect. Consequently, it suggests that two entangled qubits become less communicated during their free-fall towards the black hole horizon.
Deterministic sources of high-fidelity entangled qubit pairs encoded in the dual-rail photonic basis, i.e., presence of a single photon in one of two orthogonal modes, are a key enabling technology of many applications of quantum information processing, including high-rate high-fidelity quantum communications over long distances. The most popular and mature sources of such photonic entanglement, e.g., those that leverage spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC) or spontaneous four-wave mixing (sFWM), generate an entangled (so-called, continuous-variable) quantum state that contains contri…
We present a novel yet simple approach to produced multiple entangled photon pairs through spontaneous parametric downconversion. We have developed Gaussian masks to subdivide the pump beam before passing it through a nonlinear medium. In this way, we are able to observe simultaneous separate down-converted emission cones with spatial overlap. The technique we employ can be used to greatly increase the dimensionality of entangled photonic systems generated from spontaneous parametric down conversion, affording greater scalability to optical quantum computing than previously explored.
We present an analysis of noisy atomic channels involving qutrits. We choose a three-level atom with V-configuration to be the qutrit state. Gell-Mann matrices and a generalized Bloch vector (8-dimensional) are used to describe the qutrit density operator. We introduce quantum quasi-distributions for qutrits that provide a simple description of entanglement. Studying the time-evolution for the atomic variables we find the Kraus representation of spontaneous emission quantum channel (SE channel). Furthermore, we consider a generalized Werner state of two qutrits and investigate the separability…
The Hong-Ou-Mandel interference effect lies at the heart of many emerging quantum technologies whose performance can be significantly enhanced with increasing numbers of entangled modes one could measure and thus utilize. Photon pairs generated through the process of spontaneous parametric down conversion are known to be entangled in a vast number of modes in the various degrees of freedom (DOF) the photons possess such as time, energy, and momentum, etc. Due to limitations in detection technology and techniques, often only one such DOFs can be effectively measured at a time, resulting in much…
Tanabe et al (Phys. Rev. A {\bf 82} 040101(R) 2010) have experimentally demonstrated that the emission properties of unstable atoms in entangled and product states are different. The authors define an apparent decay time as a fitting parameter which falls below the lifetime of the single atom for entangled pairs. We argue that their results about coincidence time spectra are correct, but those concerning lifetimes cannot be considered conclusive because they assume the emission of photons by the two atoms to be independent processes, a doubtful hypothesis for entangled states. We suggest an im…
According to the famous Kibble-Zurek mechanism (KZM), the universality of spontaneous defect generation in continuous phase transitions (CPTs) can be understood by the critical slowing down. In most CPTs of atomic Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs), the universality of spontaneous defect generations has been explained by the divergent relaxation time associated with the nontrivial gapless Bogoliubov excitations. However, for atomic BECs in synthetic gauge fields, their spontaneous superfluidity breakdown is resulted from the divergent correlation length associated with the zero Landau critical v…
We describe an experimentally straightforward method for preparing an entangled W state of up to 100 qubits. Our repeat-until-success protocol relies on detection of single photons from collective spontaneous emission in free space. Our method allows entanglement preparation in a wide range of qubit implementations that lack entangling qubit-qubit interactions. We give detailed numerical examples for entanglement of neutral atoms in optical lattices and of nitrogen-vacancy centres in diamond. The simplicity of our method should enable preparation of mesoscopic entangled states in a number of p…
We propose a dissipative scheme to prepare a three-dimensional entangled state for two atoms trapped in separate coupled cavities. Our work shows that both atomic spontaneous emission and cavity decay, which are two typical obstacles in unitary-dynamics-based schemes, could be utilized as resources for high-dimensional entangled state preparation without specifying initial state and controlling time precisely. Final numerical simulation with one group of experimental parameters indicates that the performance of our scheme is better than the unitary-dynamics-based scheme.
We show that polarization entangled photons at x-ray energies can be generated via spontaneous parametric down conversion. Each of the four Bell states can be generated by choosing the angle of incidence and polarization of the pumping beam.
How to prepare deterministically non-Gaussian entangled states is a fundamental question for continuous-variable quantum information technology. Here, we theoretically demonstrate through numerical methods that the triple-photon state generated by three-photon spontaneous parametric down-conversion is a pure super-Gaussian resource of non-Gaussian entanglement. Interestingly, the degree of entanglement between the modes of the triple-photon state is stronger than that corresponding to the two-mode squeezed vacuum state produced by a quadratic Hamiltonian with the same parameters. Furthermore, …
We present theoretical and experimental study of preparing maximally entangled two-photon polarization states, or Bell states, using femtosecond pulse pumped spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC). First, we show how the inherent distinguishability in femtosecond pulse pumped type-II SPDC can be removed by using an interferometric technique without spectral and amplitude post-selection. We then analyze the recently introduced Bell state preparation scheme using type-I SPDC. Theoretically, both methods offer the same results, however, type-I SPDC provides experimentally superior methods …
We analyze theoretically the entanglement between two non-planar and light identical molecules (e.g., pyramidal as $NH_3$) that present inversion doubling due to the internal spatial inversion of their nuclear conformations by tunneling. The peculiarity of this system lies in the simplicity of this type of molecular system in which two near levels can be connected by allowed electric dipole transition with considerable value of the dipole moment transition and negligible spontaneous emission because the transition is in the microwave or far-infrared range. These properties give place to entang…
We present detailed instructions for constructing and operating an apparatus to produce and detect polarization-entangled photons. The source operates by type-I spontaneous parametric downconversion in a two-crystal geometry. Photons are detected in coincidence by single-photon counting modules and show strong angular and polarization correlations. We observe more than 100 entangled photon pairs per second. A test of a Bell inequality can be performed in an afternoon.
We report on theoretical and experimental demonstration of high-efficiency coupling of two-photon entangled states produced in the nonlinear process of spontaneous parametric down conversion into a single-mode fiber. We determine constraints for the optimal coupling parameters. This result is crucial for practical implementation of quantum key distribution protocols with entangled states.
We implement experimentally a method to generate photon-number$-$path and polarization entangled photon pairs using ``beamlike'' type-II spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), in which the signal-idler photon pairs are emitted as two separate circular beams with small emission angles rather than as two diverging cones.
An experimental scheme for concentrating entanglement in partially entangled photon pairs is proposed. In this scheme, two separated parties obtain one maximally entangled photon pair from previously shared two partially entangled photon pairs by local operations and classical communication. A practical realization of the proposed scheme is discussed, which uses imperfect photon detectors and spontaneous parametric down-conversion as a photon source. This scheme also works for purifying a class of mixed states.
We experimentally demonstrate the generation of a three-photon discrete-energy-entangled W state using multi-photon-pair generation by spontaneous four-wave mixing in an optical fiber. We show that by making use of prior information on the photon source we can verify the state produced by this source without resorting to frequency conversion.
Multi-dimensional entangled states have been proven to be more powerful in some quantum information process. In this paper, down-converted photons from spontaneous parametric down conversion(SPDC) are used to engineer multi-dimensional entangled states. A kind of multi-degree multi-dimensional Greenberger-Horne-Zeilinger(GHZ) state can also be generated. The hyper-entangled photons, which are entangled in energy-time, polarization and orbital angular momentum (OAM), is proved to be useful to increase the dimension of systems and investigate higher-dimensional entangled states.
The nonlinear photon-photon interaction mediated by a single two-level atom is studied theoretically based on a one-dimensional model of the field-atom interaction. This model allows us to determine the effects of an atomic nonlinearity on the spatiotemporal coherence of a two photon state. Specifically, the complete two photon output wave function can be obtained for any two photon input wave function. It is shown that the quantum interference between the components of the output state associated with different interaction processes causes bunching and anti-bunching in the two photon statisti…
We demonstrate experimentally the tunable control of the joint spectrum, i.e. waveform and degree of frequency correlations, of paired photons generated in spontaneous parametric downconversion. This control is mediated by the spatial shape of the pump beam in a type-I noncollinear configuration. We discuss the applicability of this technique to other sources of frequency entangled photons, such as electromagnetically induced Raman transitions.
We study broadband polarization entangled states generated within the line width of type-II Spontaneous Parametric Down Conversion (SPDC). Applying a complete quantum polarization tomography protocol at arbitrary combination of frequency and angular sideband modes we reveal a complex structure of non-degenerate non-collinear polarization entangled states generated within the SPDC line width. It is demonstrated that simultaneous compensation of longitudinal and transverse walk off leads to homogenizing the structure of polarization entanglement.
In this paper the coherence and crossing symmetry of the electromagnetic interaction of photons involved in the spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC) phenomena in nonlinear crystals, are investigated. On this basis a new interpretation of the recent results on the two photon entangled experiment is obtained. A new field of applications is suggested.
Photonic-based qubits and integrated photonic circuits have enabled demonstrations of quantum information processing (QIP) that promises to transform the way in which we compute and communicate. To that end, sources of polarization-entangled photon pair states are an important enabling technology, especially for polarization-based protocols. However, such states are difficult to prepare in an integrated photonic circuit. Scalable semiconductor sources typically rely on nonlinear optical effects where polarization mode dispersion (PMD) degrades entanglement. Here, we directly generate polarizat…
Tripartite entangled states, such as GHZ and W states, are typically generated by manipulating two pairs of polarization-entangled photons in bulk optics. Here we propose a scheme to generate W states that are entangled in the energy degree of freedom in an integrated optical circuit. Our approach employs photon pairs generated by spontaneous four-wave mixing (SFWM) in a micro- ring resonator. We also present a feasible procedure for demonstrating the generation of such a state, and we compare polarization-entangled and energy-entangled schemes for the preparation of W states.
Using a basic Mach-Zehnder interferometer, we demonstrate experimentally the measurement of the photonic de Broglie wavelength of an entangled photon pair (a biphoton) generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. The observed interference manifests the concept of the photonic de Broglie wavelength. The result also provides a proof-of-principle of the quantum lithography that utilizes the reduced interferometric wavelength.
By utilizing the frequency anticorrelation of two-photon states produced via spontaneous parametric down conversion (SPDC), the working principle of a novel remote spectrometer is demonstrated. With the help of a local scanning monochromator, the spectral transmission function of an optical element (or atmosphere) at remote locations can be characterized for wide range of wavelengths with expected high resolution.
We put forward the concept of quantum spiral bandwidth of the spatial mode function of the two-photon entangled state in spontaneous parametric downconversion. We obtain the bandwidth using the eigenstates of the orbital angular momentum of the biphoton states, and reveal its dependence with the length of the down converting crystal and waist of the pump beam. The connection between the quantum spiral bandwidth and the entropy of entanglement of the quantum state is discussed.
We report an experimental study of group-velocity dispersion effect on an entangled two-photon wavepacket, generated via spontaneous parametric down-conversion and propagating through a dispersive medium. Even in the case of using CW laser beam for pump, the biphoton wavepacket and the second-order correlation function spread significantly. The study and understanding of this phenomenon is of great importance for quantum information applications, such as quantum communication and distant clock synchronization.
Quantum spectroscopy was performed using the frequency-entangled broadband photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion. An absorptive sample was placed in front of the idler photon detector, and the frequency of signal photons was resolved by a diffraction grating. The absorption spectrum of the sample was measured by counting the coincidences, and the result is in agreement with the one measured by a conventional spectrophotometer with a classical light source.
We propose a cavity-QED scheme that can deterministically generate Einstein-Podosky-Rosen polarization-entangled photon pairs. A four-level tripod atom successively couples to two high-Q optical cavities possessing polarization degeneracy, assisted by a classical $π$-polarized pump field. The stimulated Raman adiabatic passage process in the atom-cavity system is used to produce the polarization-entangled photon pairs. The proposal is particularly robust against atomic spontaneous decay, which should have potential applications in quantum information processing.
We propose using spontaneous Raman scattering from an optically driven Bose-Einstein condensate as a source of atom-photon pairs whose internal states are maximally entangled. Generating entanglement between a particle which is easily transmitted (the photon) and one which is easily trapped and coherently manipulated (an ultracold atom) will prove useful for a variety of quantum-information related applications. We analyze the type of entangled states generated by spontaneous Raman scattering and construct a geometry which results in maximum entanglement.
What are the orbital angular momentum correlations between spatially entangled photon pairs generated in spontaneous parametric down-conversion? We show that the answer to this question can be given in two alternative, although complementary, ways. The answer posed in this letter explains satisfactorily the seemingly contradictory results obtained in different experiments, and theoretical approaches.
Quantum state tomography (QST) is a universal tool for the design and optimization of entangled-photon sources. It typically requires single-photon detectors and coincidence measurements. Recently, it was suggested that the information provided by the QST of photon pairs generated by spontaneous parametric down-conversion could be obtained by exploiting the stimulated version of this process, namely difference frequency generation. In this protocol, so-called "stimulated-emission tomography" (SET), a seed field is injected along with the pump pulse, and the resulting stimulated emission is mea…
The dependence of one- and two-photon characteristics of pulsed entangled two-photon fields generated in spontaneous parametric down-conversion on the pump-pulse properties (shape of the pump-pulse spectrum and its internal structure) is examined. It is shown that entangled two-photon fields with defined properties can be generated. A general relation between the spectra of the down-converted fields is established. As a special case interference of two partially overlapping pulsed two-photon fields is studied. Fourth-order interference pattern of entangled two-photon fields is investigated in …
Using the process of cavity-enhanced spontaneous parametric down-conversion (SPDC), we generate a narrow-band polarization-entangled photon pair resonant on the rubidium (Rb) D1 line (795 nm). The degenerate single-mode photon pair is selected by multiple temperature controlled etalons. The linewidth of generated polarization-entangled photon pairs is 15 MHz which matches the typical atomic memory bandwidth. The measured Bell parameter for the polarization-entangled photons S=2.73+-0.04 which violates the Bell-CHSH inequality by ~18 standard deviations. The presented entangled photon pair sour…
We theoretically investigate the generation of two entangled beams of light in the process of single-pass type-I noncollinear frequency degenerate parametric downconversion with an ultrashort pulsed pump. We find the spatio-temporal squeezing eigenmodes and the corresponding squeezing eigenvalues of the generated field both numerically and analytically. The analytical solution is obtained by modeling the joint spectral amplitude of the field by a Gaussian function in curvilinear coordinates. We show that this method is highly efficient and is in a good agreement with the numerical solution. We…
We present a tunable, frequency-stabilized, narrow-bandwidth source of frequency-degenerate, entangled photon pairs. The source is based on spontaneous parametric downconversion (SPDC) in periodically-poled KTiOPO4 (PPKTP). Its wavelength can be stabilized to 850 or 854 nm, thus allowing to address two D-P transitions in 40Ca+ ions. Its output bandwidth of 22 MHz coincides with the absorption bandwidth of the calcium ions. Its spectral power density is 1.0 generated pairs/(s MHz mW).
A detailed analysis of the stimulated parametric down-conversion (PDC) process is performed to investigate the effects of the spatiotemporal degrees of freedom. The analysis provides information that would be useful for PDC-based metrology applications. Using a Wigner functional approach, we obtain the parametric down-converted state as the Bogoliubov transformed input state, in terms of Bogoliubov kernel functions. The result is used to consider the case for a coherent state seeding stimulated PDC. We also compute the background which is obtained from spontaneous PDC.
The generation and storage of entangled photons play important roles in quantum information technique. Spontaneous Raman scattering (SRS) in atomic ensembles provides a promising method to generate entangled photons capable of storage. In the past experiments, a spin-wave-photon entangled state is produced via SRS in an atomic ensemble, with which a pair of entangled photons is obtained. Here, we report a scheme of simultaneously generating two spin-wave-photon entangled states in an atomic ensemble by collecting Stokes photons at two different directions. Based on the obtained two atom-photon…
