In Kleinrock and Kamoun's paper, the inverse relation of routing table length index and routing path length index in hierarchical routing model is illustrated. In this paper we give the analytical correlation of routing table length index and routing path length index in hierarchical routing model.
This article first addresses applicability of Euclidean models to the domain of Internet routing. Those models are found (limitedly) applicable. Then a simplistic model of routing is constructed for Euclidean plane densely covered with points-routers. The model guarantees low stretch and logarithmical size of routing tables at any node. The paper concludes with a discussion on applicability of the model to real-world Internet routing.
The performances of the routing protocols are important since they compute the primary path between source and destination. In addition, routing protocols need to detect failure within a short period of time when nodes move to start updating the routing table in order to find a new primary path to the destination. Meantime, loss of packets and end-to- end delays will increase thereby reducing throughput and degrading the performance of the network. This paper proposes a new algorithm, DBRT (Driven Backup Routing Table), to improve the existing proactive protocols such as DSDV (Destination Sequ…
Due to the popularity of network applications, such as multimedia, online shopping, Internet of Things (IoT), and 5G, the contents cached in the routers are frequently replaced in Content-Centric Networking (CCN). Generally, cache miss causes numerous propagated packets to get the required content that deteriorates network congestion and delay the response time of consumers. Many caching strategies and routing policies were proposed to solve the problem. This paper presents an alternative solution by designing a query-based routing table update mechanism to increase the accuracy of routing tab…
The space-requirement for routing-tables is an important characteristic of routing schemes. For the cost-measure of minimizing the total network load there exist a variety of results that show tradeoffs between stretch and required size for the routing tables. This paper designs compact routing schemes for the cost-measure congestion, where the goal is to minimize the maximum relative load of a link in the network (the relative load of a link is its traffic divided by its bandwidth). We show that for arbitrary undirected graphs we can obtain oblivious routing strategies with competitive ratio …
A fundamental component of networking infras- tructure is the policy, used in routing tables and firewalls. Accordingly, there has been extensive study of policies. However, the theory of such policies indicates that the size of the decision tree for a policy is very large ( O((2n)d), where the policy has n rules and examines d features of packets). If this was indeed the case, the existing algorithms to detect anomalies, conflicts, and redundancies would not be tractable for practical policies (say, n = 1000 and d = 10). In this paper, we clear up this apparent paradox. Using the concept of '…
Anonymous routing protocols are used in MANET's to hide the nodes from outsiders in order to protect from various attacks. HPAR partitions the network area dynamically into zones and chooses nodes in zones randomly as intermediate relay nodes .This relay nodes help in secure routing. In HPAR anonymity protection is given to source, destination and route. HPAR have low cost and provide high level of protection. It has techniques to counter various attacks.
In the last decade, many semantic-based routing protocols had been designed for peer-to-peer systems. However, they are not suitable for IoT systems, mainly due to their high demands in memory and computing power which are not available in many IoT devices. In this paper, we develop a semantic-based routing protocol for dynamic IoT systems to facilitate dynamic IoT capability discovery and composition. Our protocol is a fully decentralized routing protocol. To reduce the space requirement for routing, each node maintains a summarized routing table. We design an ontology-based summarization alg…
security and QoS are the two most precious objectives for network systems to be attained. Unfortunately, they are in conflict, while QoS tries to minimize processing delay, strong security protection requires more processing time and cause packet delay. This article is a step towards resolving this conflict by extending the firewall session table to accelerate NAT, QoS classification, and routing processing time while providing the same level of security protection. Index Terms ? stateful packet filtering; firewall; session/state table; QoS; NAT; Routing.
This paper critically examines some propositions and arguments of cs.NI/0508021 regarding applicability of hierarchical routing and perspectives of compact routing. Arguments against the former are found to be inaccurate while the latter is found to be equivalent to well-known deployed solutions. Also, multiple (stacked) application of compact-routing solutions is found to be equivalent to hierarchical routing.

We introduce and evaluate a very simple landmark-based network partition technique called Hierarchical Bipartition Routing (HBR) to support routing with delivery guarantee in wireless ad hoc sensor networks. It is a simple routing protocol that can easily be combined with any other greedy routing algorithm to obtain delivery guarantee. The efficiency of HBR increases if the network is sparse and contains obstacles. The space necessary to store the additional routing information at a node u is on average not larger than the size necessary to store the IDs of the neighbors of u. The amount of wo…
A new two layer hierarchical routing protocol called Cluster Based Hierarchical Routing Protocol (CBHRP) is proposed in this paper. It is an extension of LEACH routing protocol. We introduce cluster head-set idea for cluster-based routing where several clusters are formed with the deployed sensors to collect information from target field. On rotation basis, a head-set member receives data from the neighbor nodes and transmits the aggregated results to the distance base station. This protocol reduces energy consumption quite significantly and prolongs the life time of sensor network. It is foun…
Routing is one of the critical and ongoing challenges in Wireless Sensor Networks. The main challenge has always been to have a routing protocol that reduces the communication overhead, hence saving the energy of the sensors in the network. Hierarchical routing protocols are known to be the most energy-efficient routing protocols for Wireless Sensor Networks. In this paper, a more generalized hierarchical routing protocol is introduced for Wireless Sensor Network, which is based on tree data structures. The clustering in the proposed protocol has the format of a general tree, which is construc…
Mobile Adhoc Network is a wireless network without infrastructure. It is a kind of wireless adhoc network, and is a self configuring network of mobile routers connected by wireless links. The routers are free to move randomly and organize themselves arbitrarily, thus the network's wireless topology may change rapidly and unpredictably. Such a network may operate in a standalone fashion,or may be connected to the larger Internet. There are various routing protocols available for MANET.The most popular ones are DSR,AODV and DSDV.This paper examines two routing protocols for mobile ad hoc networks :th…
We introduce CCN-RAMP (Routing to Anchors Matching Prefixes), a new approach to content-centric networking. CCN-RAMP offers all the advantages of the Named Data Networking (NDN) and Content-Centric Networking (CCNx) but eliminates the need to either use Pending Interest Tables (PIT) or lookup large Forwarding Information Bases (FIB) listing name prefixes in order to forward Interests. CCN-RAMP uses small forwarding tables listing anonymous sources of Interests and the locations of name prefixes. Such tables are immune to Interest-flooding attacks and are smaller than the FIBs used to list IP a…
This work focusses on analyzing the optimization strategies of routing protocols with respect to energy utilization of sensor nodes in Wireless Sensor Network (WSNs). Different routing mechanisms have been proposed to address energy optimization problem in sensor nodes. Clustering mechanism is one of the popular WSNs routing mechanisms. In this paper, we first address energy limitation constraints with respect to maximizing network life time using linear programming formulation technique. To check the efficiency of different clustering scheme against modeled constraints, we select four cluster…
In this paper, a new routing algorithm based on a flooding method is introduced. Flooding techniques have been used previously, e.g. for broadcasting the routing table in the ARPAnet [1] and other special purpose networks [3][4][5]. However, sending data using flooding can often saturate the network [2] and it is usually regarded as an inefficient broadcast mechanism. Our approach is to flood a very short packet to explore an optimal route without relying on a pre-established routing table, and an efficient flood control algorithm to reduce the signalling traffic overhead. This is an inherentl…
MANET is a collection of mobile devices with no centralized control and no pre-existing infrastructures. Due to the nodal mobility, supporting QoS during routing in this type of networks is a very challenging task. To tackle this type of overhead many routing algorithms with clustering approach have been proposed. Clustering is an effective method for resource management regarding network performance, routing protocol design, QoS etc. Most of the flat network architecture contains homogeneous capacity of nodes but in real time nodes are with heterogeneous capacity and transmission power. Hiera…

We introduce a new concept called head-set, consists of one active cluster head and some other associate cluster heads within a cluster. The head-set members are responsible for control and management of the network. Results show that this protocol reduces energy consumption quite significantly and prolongs the life time of sensor networ…

Current methods of routing are based on network information in the form of routing tables, in which routing protocols determine how to update the tables according to the network changes. Despite the variability of data in routing tables, node addresses are constant. In this paper, we first introduce the new concept of variable addresses, which results in a novel framework to cope with routing problems using heuristic solutions. Then we propose a heuristic routing mechanism based on the application of genes for determination of network addresses in a variable address network and describe how th…
Routers are one of the important entities in computer networks specially the Internet. Forwarding IP packets is a valuable and vital function in Internet routers. Routers extract destination IP address from packets and lookup those addresses in their own routing table. This task is called IP lookup. Internet address lookup is a challenging problem due to the increasing routing table sizes. Ternary Content-Addressable Memories (TCAMs) are becoming very popular for designing high-throughput address lookup-engines on routers: they are fast, cost-effective and simple to manage. Despite the TCAMs s…
Wireless network topologies change over time and maintaining routes requires frequent updates. Updates are costly in terms of consuming throughput available for data transmission, which is precious in wireless networks. In this paper, we ask whether there exist low-overhead schemes that produce low-stretch routes. This is studied by using the underlying geometric properties of the connectivity graph in wireless networks.
Time-Sensitive Networking (TSN) extends IEEE 802.1 Ethernet for safety-critical and real-time applications in several areas, e.g., automotive, aerospace or industrial automation. However, many of these systems also have stringent security requirements, and security attacks may impair safety. Given a TSN-based distributed architecture, a set of applications with tasks and messages, as well as a set of security and redundancy requirements, we are interested to synthesize a system configuration such that the real-time, safety and security requirements are upheld. We use the Timed Efficient Stream…
Information-Centric Networking is still an incomplete paradigm which introduces a large variety of new topics and approaches over the traditional networking. Since it is a relatively new concept which promises for easier and faster data access many aspects of it have been studied intensely in recent years. Nonetheless, load balancing is one of the least focused but high potency, open-ended areas. The aim of this project is to present an alternative technique to load balancing in the domain of pre-suggested routing method LSCR (Link State Content Routing). We suggested multi-path interest and m…
In this paper, we consider the IoT data discovery problem in very large and growing scale networks. Specifically, we investigate in depth the routing table summarization techniques to support effective and space-efficient IoT data discovery routing. Novel summarization algorithms, including alphabetical based, hash based, and meaning based summarization and their corresponding coding schemes are proposed. The issue of potentially misleading routing due to summarization is also investigated. Subsequently, we analyze the strategy of when to summarize in order to balance the tradeoff between the …
We use the incompressibility method based on Kolmogorov complexity to determine the total number of bits of routing information for almost all network topologies. In most models for routing, for almost all labeled graphs $Θ(n^2)$ bits are necessary and sufficient for shortest path routing. By `almost all graphs' we mean the Kolmogorov random graphs which constitute a fraction of $1-1/n^c$ of all graphs on $n$ nodes, where $c > 0$ is an arbitrary fixed constant. There is a model for which the average case lower bound rises to $Ω(n^2 \log n)$ and another model where the average case upper bound …
Position-based routing protocols take advantage of location information to perform a stateless and efficient routing. To enable position-based routing, a node must be able to discover the location of the messages' destination node. This task is typically accomplished by a location service. Recently, several location service protocols have been developed for ad hoc networks. In this paper we propose a novel location service called PHLS: Predictive Hierarchical Location Service. In PHLS, the entire network is partitioned into a hierarchy of smaller and smaller regions. For each node, one node in…
During route discovery of mobile ad hoc network, broadcasting of route request and route reply packets are the essential operations for finding the path between two ends. In such situations, intermediate node which may or may not belongs will participate in route discovery process, update routing table and rebroadcast the route discovery packets again to its neighboring nodes. Finally optimal path is found with minimum hops. This simply upsurges overhead and deteriorates the performance of routing. The proposed Petal Ant Routing (PAR) algorithm offers a low overhead by optimizing FANT and BANT…
Wireless Sensor Networks is important to nodes energy consumption for long activity of sensor nodes because nodes that compose sensor network are small size, and battery capacity is limited. For energy consumption decrease of sensor nodes, sensor networks routing technique is divided by flat routing and hierarchical routing technique. Specially, hierarchical routing technique is energy efficient routing protocol to pare down energy consumption of whole sensor nodes and to scatter energy consumption of sensor nodes by forming cluster and communicating with cluster head. but though hierarchical …
This paper proposes and evaluates a new position-based Parallel Routing Protocol (PRP) for simultaneously routing multiple data packets over disjoint paths in a mobile ad-hoc network (MANET) for higher reliability and reduced communication delays. PRP views the geographical region where the MANET is located as a virtual 2-dimensional grid of cells. Cell-disjoint (parallel) paths between grid cells are constructed and used for building pre-computed routing tables. A single gateway node in each grid cell handles routing through that grid cell reducing routing overheads. Each node maintains updat…
Coupling regular topologies with optimized routing algorithms is key in pushing the performance of interconnection networks of HPC systems. In this paper we present Dmodc, a fast deterministic routing algorithm for Parallel Generalized Fat-Trees (PGFTs) which minimizes congestion risk even under massive topology degradation caused by equipment failure. It applies a modulo-based computation of forwarding tables among switches closer to the destination, using only knowledge of subtrees for pre-modulo division. Dmodc allows complete rerouting of topologies with tens of thousands of nodes in less …
Single path routing that is currently used in the internet routers,is easy to implement as it simplifies the routing tables and packet flow paths. However it is not optimal and has shortcomings in utilizing the network resources optimally, load balancing & fast recovery in case of faults (fault tolerance). The given algorithm resolves all these problems by using all possible multiple paths for transfer of information, while retaining loop-free property. We have proposed a new dynamic loop-free multipath routing algorithm which improves network throughput and network resource utilization, reduc…

Offchain networks emerge as a promising solution to address the scalability challenge of blockchain. Participants directly make payments through a network of payment channels without the overhead of committing onchain transactions. Routing is critical to the performance of offchain networks. Existing solutions use either static routing with poor performance or dynamic routing with high overhead to obtain the dynamic channel balance information. In this paper, we propose Flash, a new dynamic routing solution that leverages the unique characteristics of transactions in offchain networks to strik…
We study a class of robust network design problems motivated by the need to scale core networks to meet increasingly dynamic capacity demands. Past work has focused on designing the network to support all hose matrices (all matrices not exceeding marginal bounds at the nodes). This model may be too conservative if additional information on traffic patterns is available. Another extreme is the fixed demand model, where one designs the network to support peak point-to-point demands. We introduce a capped hose model to explore a broader range of traffic matrices which includes the above two as sp…

This paper explores a deep reinforcement learning approach applied to the packet routing problem with high-dimensional constraints instigated by dynamic and autonomous communication networks. Our approach is motivated by the fact that centralized path calculation approaches are often not scalable, whereas the distributed approaches with locally acting nodes are not fully aware of the end-to-end performance. We instead hierarchically distribute the path calculation over designated nodes in the network while taking into account the end-to-end performance. Specifically, we develop a hierarchical …
We present a novel heuristic algorithm for routing optimization on complex networks. Previously proposed routing optimization algorithms aim at avoiding or reducing link overload. Our algorithm balances traffic on a network by minimizing the maximum node betweenness with as little path lengthening as possible, thus being useful in cases when networks are jamming due to queuing overload. By using the resulting routing table, a network can sustain significantly higher traffic without jamming than in the case of traditional shortest path routing.
The Internet routing protocol BGP expresses topological reachability and policy-based decisions simultaneously in path vectors. A complete view on the Internet backbone routing is given by the collection of all valid routes, which is infeasible to obtain due to information hiding of BGP, the lack of omnipresent collection points, and data complexity. Commonly, graph-based data models are used to represent the Internet topology from a given set of BGP routing tables but fall short of explaining policy contexts. As a consequence, routing anomalies such as route leaks and interception attacks can…
