The connection between quiver gauge theories and dimer models has been well studied. It is known that the matter fields of the quiver gauge theories can be represented using the perfect matchings of the corresponding dimer model. We conjecture that a subset of perfect matchings associated with an internal point in the toric diagram is sufficient to give information about the charge matrix of the quiver gauge theory. Further, we perform explicit computations on some aspects of partial resolutions of toric singularities using dimer models. We analyse these with graph theory techniques, using the perfect matchings of orbifolds of the form $\BC^3/Γ$, where the orbifolding group $Γ$ may be noncyclic. Using these, we study the construction of the superpotential of gauge theories living on D-branes which probe these singularities, including the case where one or more adjoint fields are present upon partial resolution. Applying a combination of open and closed string techniques to dimer models, we also study some aspects of their symmetries.
We describe a technique which enables one to quickly compute an infinite number of toric geometries and their dual quiver gauge theories. The central object in this construction is a ``brane tiling,'' which is a collection of D5-branes ending on an NS5-brane wrapping a holomorphic curve that can be represented as a periodic tiling of the plane. This construction solves the longstanding problem of computing superpotentials for D-branes probing a singular non-compact toric Calabi-Yau manifold, and overcomes many difficulties which were encountered in previous work. The brane tilings give the lar…
Dimer models are 2-dimensional combinatorial systems that have been shown to encode the gauge groups, matter content and tree-level superpotential of the world-volume quiver gauge theories obtained by placing D3-branes at the tip of a singular toric Calabi-Yau cone. In particular the dimer graph is dual to the quiver graph. However, the string theoretic explanation of this was unclear. In this paper we use mirror symmetry to shed light on this: the dimer models live on a T^2 subspace of the T^3 fiber that is involved in mirror symmetry and is wrapped by D6-branes. These D6-branes are mirror to…
The field content and interactions of almost all known gauge theories in AdS_5/CFT_4 can be expressed in terms of dimer models or bipartite graphs drawn on a torus. Associated with the fundamental cell is a complex structure parameter tau_R. Based on the brane realization of these theories, we can specify a special Lagrangian (SLag) torus fibration that is the natural candidate to be identified as the torus on which the dimer lives. Using the metrics known in the literature, we compute the complex structure tau_G of this torus. For the theories on C^3 and the conifold and for orbifolds thereof…
The gauge theory on a set of D3-branes at a toric Calabi-Yau singularity can be encoded in a tiling of the 2-torus denoted dimer diagram (or brane tiling). We use these techniques to describe the effect on the gauge theory of geometric operations partially smoothing the singularity at which D3-branes sit, namely partial resolutions and complex deformations. More specifically, we describe the effect of arbitrary partial resolutions, including those which split the original singularity into two separated. The gauge theory correspondingly splits into two sectors (associated to branes in either si…
We revisit D3-branes at toric CY$_3$ singularities with orientifolds and their description in terms of dimer models. We classify orientifold actions on the dimer through smooth involutions of the torus. In particular, we describe new orientifold projections related to maps on the dimer without fixed points, leading to Klein bottles. These new orientifolds lead to novel $\mathcal{N}=1$ SCFT's that resemble, in many aspects, non-orientifolded theories. For instance, we recover the presence of fractional branes and some of them trigger a cascading RG-flow à la Klebanov-Strassler. The remaining in…
We introduce new techniques based on brane tilings to investigate D3-branes probing orientifolds of toric Calabi-Yau singularities. With these new tools, one can write down many orientifold models and derive the resulting low-energy gauge theories living on the D-branes. Using the set of ideas in this paper one recovers essentially all orientifolded theories known so far. Furthermore, new orientifolds of non-orbifold toric singularities are obtained. The possible applications of the tools presented in this paper are diverse. One particular application is the construction of models which featur…
We holographically engineer a periodic lattice of localized fermionic impurities within a plasma medium by putting an array of probe D5-branes in the background produced by N D3-branes. Thermodynamic quantities are computed in the large N limit via the holographic dictionary. We then dope the lattice by replacing some of the D5-branes by anti-D5-branes. In the large N limit, we determine the critical temperature below which the system dimerizes with bond ordering. Finally, we argue that for the special case of a square lattice our system is glassy at large but finite N, with the low temperatur…
We study $4d$ $\mathcal{N}=1$ gauge theories engineered via D-branes at orientifolds of toric singularities, where gauge anomalies are cancelled without the introduction of non-compact flavor branes. Using dimer model techniques, we derive geometric criteria for establishing whether a given singularity can admit anomaly-free D-brane configurations purely based on its toric data and the type of orientifold projection. Our results therefore extend the dictionary between geometric properties of singularities and physical properties of the corresponding gauge theories.
In this short note we formulate Covariant Hamiltonian formalism for strings, p-branes and Non-BPS Dp-branes. We also analyse the vacuum tachyon condensation in case of unstable D1-brane.
In this short note we study null dimensional reduction of M5-brane covariant action. We analyse longitudinal dimensional reduction that leads to non-relativistic D4-brane and transverse reduction that leads to NS5-brane in non-relativistic string theory.
We study some aspects of the recently discovered connection between dimer models and D-brane gauge theories. We argue that dimer models are also naturally related to closed string theories on non compact orbifolds of $\BC^2$ and $\BC^3$, via their twisted sector R charges, and show that perfect matchings in dimer models correspond to twisted sector states in the closed string theory. We also use this formalism to study the combinatorics of some unstable orbifolds of $\BC^2$.
In this note we analyse the dynamical potential of a system of four $Dp$-branes at arbitrary angles. The equilibrium configurations for various values of the relative angles and distances among branes are discussed. The known configurations of parallel branes and brane-antibranes are obtained at extrema of the dynamical potential.
This paper is devoted to the construction of stable and unstable Dp-branes in generalized Carroll space-times. We also study tachyon solutions on the world-volume of unstable Dp-brane in Carrollian background and discuss their physical interpretations.
We present new time dependent solutions for the dynamics of tubular D2-branes. We comment on the connection to cosmic string dynamics and explicitly give a few simple examples of oscillating and rotating brane configurations.
This short note emphasises a potential tension between string models of inflation based on systems of branes and antibranes and the spectrum of strings in curved space, in particular the requirement that the leading Regge trajectory extends to the Planck scale allowing for the conventional string theory UV completion of gravity.
A first order formulation for the Maxwell field in five dimensions is dimensionally reduced using the Randall-Sundrum mechanism. We will see that massive photons can not be localized on the brane.
We construct non-relativistic string and p-brane actions in Newton-Cartan background using the limiting procedure from the relativistic string and p-brane action in general background. We also find their Hamiltonian formulations when however we restrict ourselves to the case of the vanishing gauge field.

We give one formulation of an algorithm of Hanany and Vegh which takes a lattice polygon as an input and produces a set of isoradial dimer models. We study the case of lattice triangles in detail and discuss the relation with coamoebas following Feng, He, Kennaway and Vafa.
This paper is devoted to the study of the Hamiltonian dynamics of string in non-relativistic D3-brane background. We discuss different gauge fixing functions and construct corresponding gauge fixed Hamiltonians.
We use the nonabelian action of N coincident D(-1) branes in constant background fields, in the N $\to \infty$ limit, to construct noncommutative D-brane actions in an arbitrary noncommutative description and comment on tachyon condensation from this perspective.
Recently Verlinde proposed that gravity is an entropic force caused by information changes when a material body moves away from the holographic screen. In this note we apply this argument to brane cosmology, and show that the cosmological equation can be derived from this holographic scenario.
We study (orientifolded) toric Calabi-Yau singularities in search for D-brane configurations which lead to dynamical supersymmetry breaking at low energy. By exploiting dimer techniques we are able to determine that while most realizations lead to a Coulomb branch instability, a rather specific construction admits a fully stable supersymmetry breaking vacuum. We describe the geometric structure that a singularity should have in order to host such a construction, and present its simplest example, the Octagon.
We review and extend the progress made over the past few years in understanding the structure of toric quiver gauge theories; those which are induced on the world-volume of a stack of D3-branes placed at the tip of a toric Calabi-Yau cone, at an ``orbifold point'' in Kaehler moduli space. These provide an infinite class of four-dimensional N=1 superconformal field theories which may be studied in the context of the AdS/CFT correspondence. It is now understood that these gauge theories are completely specified by certain two-dimensional torus graphs, called brane tilings, and the combinatorics …
We investigate the correspondence between the D2-brane, which is described by the abelian Born-Infeld action, and multiple D0-branes, which are done by the nonabelian Born-Infeld action. We construct effective actions for the fuzzy cylinder, sphere and plane formed via D0-branes and compare these actions with those for the cylindrical, spherical and planar D2-brane. We show that in the continuous limit, the effective actions for the fuzzy D0-branes precisely coincide with those for the single D2-brane if both the fuzziness of the D0-brane and the area occupied per a unit of magnetic flux on th…
In this short note we will study effective action for unstable D-brane in linear dilaton background. We will solve the equation of motion for large T and we will calculate the stress energy tensor. Then we compare our results with the calculations performed using exact conformal field theory description of the open string worldsheet theory.
We refine a previous proposal for obtaining the multi-instanton partition function from the supersymmetric index of the 1d supersymmetric gauge theory on the worldline of D0-branes. We provide examples where the refinements are crucial for obtaining the correct result.
We describe a way to compute scattering amplitudes in M(atrix) quantum mechanics, that involve the transverse five-brane. We then compute certain scattering processes and show that they have the expected SO(5) invariance, give the correct transverse-five-brane mass, and agree with the supergravity result.
In this paper, we will consider the chiral symmetry breaking in the holographic model constructed from the intersecting brane configuration, and investigate the Nambu-Goldstone bosons associated with this symmetry breaking.
We propose an action for unstable Dp-brane with dynamical tension. We show that the equations of motion are equivalent to the equations of motion derived from DBI and WZ actions for non-BPS Dp-brane. We also find Hamiltonian formulation of this action and analyze properties of the solutions corresponding to the tachyon vacuum and zero tension solution.
The algebraic definition of charges for symmetry-preserving D-branes in Wess-Zumino-Witten models is shown to coincide with the geometric definition, for all simple Lie groups. The charge group for such branes is computed from the ambiguities inherent in the geometric definition.
We first investigate intersections of an S-brane with a single p-brane and show that in addition to the already known solutions, it is possible to place the S-brane so that the radial part of the p-brane is not included in its worldvolume. This leads to a new set of solutions. Secondly, we consider intersections of an S-brane with a supersymmetric Dp_1-Dp_2 intersection and find the list of allowed solutions for both positions of the S-brane. Among them there are D1-D5-S1 and D1-D5-S5 intersections which might be appropriate for studying time dependent AdS/CFT correspondence.
We construct an action for unstable M3-brane in M-theory. We argue that in order to find M3-brane action that upon direct dimensional reduction leads to non-BPS D3-brane action in type IIA theory we have to presume that the background possesses Killing isometry and that this isometry has to be gauged on the world-volume of M3-brane. Then we construct singular tachyon kink on world-volume of M3-brane and we show that the dynamics of resulting topological defect is governed by an action that upon direct dimensional reduction leads to D2-brane in type IIA theory and that is equivalent to standard…
We study the dyon electric charge of D6-branes as eleven dimensional KK-monopoles. We observe that the dyon charge is intimately related with the existence of gauge connections and antisymmetric fields on the brane world volume.
We show a duality of branes in the topological B-model by inserting two kinds of the non-compact branes simultaneously. We explicitly derive the integral formula for the matrix model partition function describing this situation, which correspondingly includes both of the characteristic polynomial and the external source. We show that these two descriptions are dual to each other through the Fourier transformation, and the brane partition function satisfies integrable equations in one and two dimensions.
We show that the gauge, gravitational (tangent-bundle) and their mixed anomalies arising from the localized modes near a 5-brane in the SO(32) heterotic string theory cancel with the anomaly inflow from the bulk with the use of the Green-Schwarz mechanism on the brane, similarly to the E_8 x E_8 5-brane case. We also compare our result with Mourad's analysis performed in the small-instanton limit.
We point out that some M-theory results for brane tension can be derived from Polchinski's formula for D-brane tension. We also argue that this formula determines gravitational and gauge couplings in the low energy but quantum exact effective action.
Gauging the M-2-brane effective action with respect to an Abelian isometry in such a way that the invariance under gauge transformations of the 3-form potential is maintained (slightly modified) we obtain a fully covariant action with 11-dimensional target space that gives the massive D-2-brane effective action upon dimensional reduction in the direction of the gauged isometry.
We find out a PP-wave spacetime with constant Neveu-Schwarz (NS) three form flux by taking a Penrose limit on the 1+1 dimensional intersection of two orthogonal stacks of fivebranes in type IIB string theory. We further find out an intersecting (D1-D5)-brane solution in this background and analyze its supersymmetry properties by solving the dilatino and gravitino variations explicitly.
In this work we study asymmetric thick braneworld scenarios, generated after adding a constant to the superpotential associated to the scalar field. We study in particular models with odd and even polynomial superpotentials, and we show that asymmetric brane can be generated irrespective of the potential being symmetric or asymmetric. We study in addition the nonpolynomial sine-Gordon-like model, also constructed with the inclusion of a constant in the standard superpotential, and we investigate gravitational stability of the asymmetric brane. The results suggest robustness of the new branewor…
The problem of the M5 brane anomaly cancellation is addressed. We reformulate FHMM construction making explicit the relation with the M5 brane SUGRA solution. We suggest another solution to the magnetic coupling equation which doesn't need anomalous SO(5) variation of the 3-form potential and coincides with the SUGRA solution outside smoothed out core of the magnetic source. Chern-Simons term evaluated on this solution generates the same anomaly inflow as achieved by FHMM.
We compute the vacuum one loop amplitude for two D-strings at an angle compactified on $T^2$ as a function of the transverse separation and the winding numbers. We show that in certain cases the amplitude is independent on whether the D-strings are compactified or not.
We show that a D-brane in a group manifold given by a (twisted) conjugacy class is characterised by a gauge invariant two-form field determined in terms of the matrix of gluing conditions. Using a quantisation argument based on the path integral one obtains the known quantisation condition for the corresponding D-branes. We find no evidence for the existence of a quantised U(1) gauge field flux. We propose an expression for the D0 charge of such D-branes.
The emergence of a Kalb-Ramond field and string charge in the lattice is discussed. The local bosonic model with rotor variables placed on the faces of a cubic lattice is considered. The coupling model consisting of the Maxwell fields and the Kalb-Ramond field is given. This construction naturally incorporates the emerging coupling between both gauge and string fields. In the process, an object that resembles to a D-brane on the lattice is introduced.
This note covers various aspects of recent attempts to describe membranes ending on fivebranes using fuzzy geometry. In particular, we examine the Basu-Harvey equation and its relation to the Nahm equation as well as the consequences of using a non-associative algebra for the fuzzy three-sphere. This produces the tantalising result that the fuzzy funnel solution corresponding to Q coincident membranes ending on a five-brane has $Q^{3/2}$ degrees of freedom.
We point out that the de Sitter swampland conjecture would be falsified if classical fluxed Type IIA orientifold vacua with a single non-BPS D7-brane were indeed part of the string theory landscape. In other words, the dS swampland conjecture implies the cancellation of K-theory charges on a compact space.
The flux singularity that arise when branes are put in an oppositely charged background is a wildly discussed issue and in this paper the problem is investigated further. New AdS world volume (anti-)M2-brane solutions are constructed by placing the brane in a background where the charge dissolved in the flux is opposite that of the brane. A topological obstruction is derived to show how the singularity develops during localisation of this solution and any similarly constructed solution. Furthermore the singularity is shown not to be possible to hide behind a horizon, which would have given cre…
It has been conjectured that a pair of D5 - anti D5 branes wrapped on some non-trivial two cycle of a Calabi-Yau manifold becomes a stable BPS D3 brane in the presence of a very large B field and magnetic fluxes on their worldvolumes. We discuss this by considering the non-commutative field theory on the worldvolume of the pair of branes whose field multiplication is made with respect to two different * products due to the presence of different F fields on the two branes. The tachyonic field becomes massless for a specific choice of the magnetic fluxes and it allows a trivial solution. Our dis…

In this paper we construct complete macroscopic operators in two dimensional type 0 string theory. They represent D-branes localized in the time direction. We give another equivalent description of them as deformed Fermi surfaces. We also discuss a continuous array of such D-branes and show that it can be described by a matrix model with a deformed potential. For appropriate values of parameters, we find that it has an additional new sector hidden inside its strongly coupled region.
We consider N=1 supersymmetric SU(N_c) gauge theories, using the type IIB brane construction recently proposed by Hanany and Zaffaroni. At non-zero string coupling, we find that the bending of branes imposes consistency conditions that allow only non-anomalous gauge theories with stable vacua, i.e., N_f >= N_c, to be constructed. We find qualitative differences between the brane configurations for N_f <= 3N_c and N_f > 3N_c, corresponding to asymptotically free and infrared free theories respectively. We also discuss some properties of the brane configurations that may be relevant to construct…
We promote a study of D-branes of type IIB string on the AdS_5 x S^5 background. The possible D-branes preserving half of supersymmetries were classified up to and including the fourth order of fermionic variable þin our previous work [hep-th/0310228]. In this paper we show that our classification is still valid even at the full order of þ. This proof supplements our previous results and completes the classification of D-branes in the type IIB string theory on the AdS_5 x S^5.
We first review the canonical formalism with general space-like hypersurfaces developed by Dirac by rederiving the Hamilton-Jacobi equations which are satisfied by on-shell actions defined on such hypersurfaces. We compare the case of gravitational systems with that of the flat space. Next, we remark as a supplement to our previous results that the effective actions of D-brane and M-brane given by arbitrary embedding functions are on-shell actions of supergravities.
We revisit the 1/2-BPS D-branes on the AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ background. Based only on the classification of 1/2-BPS D-branes obtained by the covariant open string description, we consider various purely static configurations of D-branes without any worldvolume flux on the AdS$_5\times$S$^5$ background. Under the covariant $κ$ symmetry fixing condition, we investigate which part the spacetime supersymmetries is preserved on the D-brane worldvolume and obtain the associated worldvolume supersymmetry transformation rules to leading order in the worldvolume fluctuating fields. It is shown that, for …
We review holographic renormalization for non-conformal branes using the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism. We provide the tools required for the computation of the holographic dictionary, while we present some marginally new technical results regarding holographic renormalization for $Dp$-branes, $p<5$, for Einstein-Maxwell theory coupled to a dilaton. The computations are based on a recursive algorithm by Papadimitriou, that solves the radial Hamilton-Jacobi equation in the asymptotic boundary of the bulk. This paper is a short version of the Master thesis of the author written in 2014 at the Instit…
Some recent literature has examined the holographic-induced cosmology of a brane universe in the background of an anti-de Sitter-black hole geometry. In this regard, curved-brane scenarios have begun to receive considerable attention. Our current interest is in a formal discrepancy that exists between two such works by Padilla (hep-th/0111247) and Youm (hep-th/0111276). In particular, these authors have incorporated different values for a conformal factor that is used to relate the thermodynamics of the relevant (AdS bulk and CFT brane) spacetimes. After a more general review, we clarify this …
