As a generic model system of an asymmetric binary fluid mixture, hexadecane dissolved in carbon dioxide is considered, using a coarse-grained bead-spring model for the short polymer, and a simple spherical particle with Lennard-Jones interactions for the carbon dioxide molecules. In previous work, it has been shown that this model reproduces the real phase diagram reasonable well, and also the initial stages of spinodal decomposition in the bulk following a sudden expansion of the system could be studied. Using the parallelized simulation package ESPResSo on a multiprocessor supercomputer, phase separation of thin fluid films confined between parallel walls that are repulsive for both types of molecules are simulated in a rather large system (1356 x 1356 x 67.8 A^3, corresponding to about 3.2 million atoms). Following the sudden system expansion, a complicated interplay between phase separation in the directions perpendicular and parallel to the walls is found: in the early stages the hexadecane molecules accumulate mostly in the center of the slit pore, but as the coarsening of the structure in the parallel direction proceeds, the inhomogeneity in the perpendicular direction gets much reduced. Studying then the structure factors and correlation functions at fixed distances from the wall, the densities are essentially not conserved at these distances, and hence the behavior differs strongly from spinodal decomposition in the bulk. Some of the characteristic lengths show a nonmonotonic variation with time, and simple coarsening described by power-law growth is only observed if the domain sizes are much larger than the film thickness.
We have explored the phase behavior of a set of water-like models in slit pores of nanoscopic dimensions. The interaction between water and pore walls mimics the graphite surface. A version of density functional method is used as theoretical tools. The fluid models are adopted from the work of Clark et al. [Mol. Phys., 2006, 104, 3561]. They reproduce the bulk water vapor-liquid coexistence envelope adequately. Our principal focus is on changes of topology of the phase diagram of confined water and establishing trends of behavior of the crossover temperature between condensation and evaporatio…
Using Monte Carlo simulation, we study the influence of geometric confinement on demixing for a series of symmetric non-additive hard spheres mixtures confined in slit pores. We consider both a wide range of positive non-additivities and a series of pore widths, ranging from the pure two dimensional limit to a large pore width where results are close to the bulk three dimensional case. Critical parameters are extracted by means of finite size analysis. We find that for this particular case in which demixing is induced by volume effects, phase separation is in most cases somewhat impeded by spa…
We present a computer simulation study of a (6,12)-Lennard-Jones fluid confined to a slit pore, formed by two uniform planes. These interact via a (3,9)-Lennard-Jones potential with the fluid particles. When the fluid approaches the liquid-to-solid transition we first observe layering parallel to the walls. In order to investigate the nature of the freezing transition, we performed a detailed analysis of the bond-orientational order parameter in the layers. Changing the distance between the slit wall, we studied howthe behaviour changes from a quasi-2d crystallization without hysteresis and an…
We have studied phase behavior of hard gaussian overlap molecules with small anisotropic parameter confined in two plane parallel structureless hard walls. Our investigation based on standard constant-NPT Monte Carlo molecular simulation led us to some interesting findings. For small anisotropic molecules the nematic phase is instable in bulk, while, if the distance between the walls is small enough, an orientation-ordered phase can form. This result indicates that the required molecular elongation forming liquid-crystal phases is smaller in confinement than that in bulk. Considering the value…
We present a computer simulation study of a (6,12)-Lennard-Jones fluid confined to a slit pore, formed by two uniform planes. These interact via (3,9)-Lennard-Jones potential with the fluid particles. When the fluid approaches the liquid-to-solid transition we first observe layering parallel to the walls. In order to investigate the nature of the freezing transition we performed a detailed analysis of the bond-orientational order parameter in the layers. We found no signs of hexatic order which would indicate a melting scenario of the Kosterlitz-Thouless type. An analysis of the mean-square di…
Nanoscopic pores are used in various systems to attract nanoparticles. In general the behaviour is a result of two types of interactions: the material specific affinity and the solvent-mediated influence also called the depletion force. The latter is more universal but also much more complex to understand since it requires modeling both the nanoparticle and the solvent. Here, we employed classical density functional theory to determine the forces acting on a nanoparticle near a nanoscopic pore as a function of its hydrophobicity and its size. A simple capillary model is constructed to predict …
We investigate a behavior of a core-softened system in a thin slit pore (the width of the pore is equil to three diameters of the particles). In previous studies it was shown that strongly confined systems form crystalline phases which consist of several triangular or square layers. These phases can be also considered as cuts of FCC or HCP structures. We show that the behavior of the core-softened system is more complex. We observe also a quasicrystalline phase. Moreover, the phase with two triangular layers appears at lower densities than the one with two square layers which is in contrast to…
We study the charging dynamics of a long electrolyte-filled slit pore in response to a suddenly applied potential. In particular, we analytically solve the Poisson-Nernst-Planck (PNP) equations for a pore for which $λ_D\ll H\ll L$, with $λ_D$ the Debye length and $H$ and $L$ the pore's width and length. For small applied potentials, we find the time-dependent potential drop between the pore's surface and its center to be in complete agreement with a prediction of the celebrated transmission line model. For moderate to high applied potentials, prior numerical work showed that charging slows dow…
The phase behavior of hard rectangular rods with length L and diameter D is studied in a narrow slit-like pore using the Parsons-Lee density functional theory. Using the restricted orientation approximation, we find strong adsorption at the walls with planar ordering, second order uniaxial-biaxial ordering transitions and first order layering transitions. The layering transition takes place between two fluids having n and n+1 layers, where the layer spacing is in the order of D. In the case of weak shape anisotropy (L/D=3), the coexisting fluids can be either uniaxial or biaxial, while both ph…
We examine the ordering behavior of hard plate-like particle in a very narrow slit-like pore using the Parsons-Lee density functional theory and the restricted orientation approximation. We observe that the plates are orientationally ordered and align perpendicularly (face-on) to the walls at low densities, a first order layering transition occurs between uniaxial nematic structures having n and n+1 layers at intermediate densities and even a phase transition between a monolayer with parallel (edge-on) orientational order and n layers with perpendicular one can be detected at high densities. I…
The temperature dependence of the dynamics of water inside microporous activated carbon fibers (ACF) is investigated by means of incoherent elastic and quasi- elastic neutron scattering techniques. The aim is to evaluate the effect of increasing pore size on the water dynamics in these primarily hydrophobic slit-shaped channels. Using two different micropore sizes (\sim 12 and 18 Å, denoted respectively ACF-10 and ACF-20), a clear suppression of the mobility of the water molecules is observed as the pore gap or temperature decreases. This suppression is accompanied by a systematic dependence o…
We investigate the electric double layer formed between charged walls of a slit-like pore and a solvent primitive model (SPM) for electrolyte solution. The recently developed version of the weighted density functional approach for electrostatic interparticle interaction is applied to the study of the density profiles, adsorption and selectivity of adsorption of ions and solvent species. Our principal focus, however, is in the dependence of differential capacitance on the applied voltage, on the electrode and on the pore width. We discuss the properties of the model with respect to the behavior…
It is well known that confining a liquid into a pore strongly alters the liquid behavior. Investigations of the effect of confinement are of great importance for many scientific and technological applications. Here we present a molecular dynamics study of the behavior of cyclohexane confined in carbon slit pores. The local structure and orientational ordering of cyclohexane molecules are investigated. It is shown that the system freezes with decreasing the pore width, and the freezing temperature of nanoconfined cyclohenae is higher than the bulk one.
We study the dynamics of ionic liquids in a thin slit pore geometry. Beginning with the classical and dynamic density functional theories for systems of charged hard spheres, an asymptotic procedure leads to a simplified model which incorporates both the accurate resolution of the ion layering (perpendicular to the slit pore wall) and the ion transport in the pore length. This reduced-order model enables qualitative comparisons between different ionic liquids and electrode pore sizes at low numerical expense. We derive semi-analytical expressions for the impedance response of the reduced-order…
Accurate modeling of diffusive transport of nanoparticles across nanopores is a particularly challenging problem. The reason is that for such narrow pores the large surface-to-volume ratio amplifies the relevance of the nanoscopic details and of the effective interactions at the interface with pore walls. Close to the pore wall, there is no clear separation between the length scales associated with molecular interactions, layering of the solvent at the interface with the pore and the particle size. Therefore, the standard hydrodynamic arguments may not apply and alternative solutions to determ…
A simple Lennard-Jones fluid confined in a slit nanopore with hard walls is studied on the basis of a multilayer structured model. Each layer is homogeneous and parallel to the walls of the pore. The Helmholtz energy of this system is constructed following van der Waals-like approximations, with the advantage that the model geometry permits to obtain analytical expressions for the integrals involved. Being the multilayer system in thermodynamic equilibrium, a system of non-linear equations is obtained for the densities and widths of the layers. A numerical solution of the equations gives the d…
A simple fluid, described by point-like particles interacting via the Lennard-Jones potential, is considered under confinement in a slit geometry between two walls at distance Lz apart for densities inside the vapor-liquid coexistence curve. Equilibrium then requires the coexistence of a liquid "bridge" between the two walls, and vapor in the remaining pore volume. We study this equilibrium for several choices of the wall-fluid interaction (corresponding to the full range from complete wetting to complete drying, for a macroscopically thick film), and consider also the kinetics of state change…
Using Monte Carlo simulation, we analyse the behaviour of two-dimensional hard rods in four different types of geometric confinement: (i) a slit pore where the particles are confined between two parallel walls with homeotropic anchoring; (ii) a hybrid slit pore formed by a planar and a homeotropic wall; square cavities that frustrate the orientational order by imposing either (iii) homeotropic or (iv) planar wall anchoring. We present results for the state diagram as a function of the packing fraction and the degree of confinement. Under extreme confinement, unexpected states appear with lower…
We study by Monte Carlo simulation a binary mixture of neutral and dipolar hard-spheres with non-additive diameters. With a view to understanding the interplay between population inversion for an open pore and the demixing phase transitions, the mixture is considered in the bulk and confined between two parallel hard-walls modeling a slit pore. A uniform field is applied in the pore in order to control its composition as shown previously. The demixing lines in the bulk and in the pore are studied by the Gibbs Ensemble Monte Carlo method. The open pore-bulk mixture equilibrium is studied by a c…
Using a coarse-grained bead-spring model of flexible polymer chains, the structure of a polymeric nanodroplet adsorbed on a chemically decorated flat wall is investigated by means of Molecular Dynamics simulation. We consider sessile drops on a lyophilic (attractive for the monomers) region of circular shape with radius R_D while the remaining part of the substrate is lyophobic. The variation of the droplet shape, including its contact angle, with R_D is studied, and the density profiles across these droplets also are obtained. In addition, the interaction of droplets adsorbed on two walls for…
In this work we present results from NPT(isobaric-isothermal) Monte Carlo Simulation studies of Liquid Crystalline Dendrimer (LCDr) systems confined in a slit-pore made of two parallel flat walls. We investigate the substrate induced conformational and alignment properties of the system at different thermodynamic state points under uniform (unidirectional) anchoring condition. Tractable coarse grained force fields to model both monomer-monomer and monomer-substrate interaction potentials have been used from our previous work. In this anchoring condition, at lower pressure almost all the monome…
The effect of strong confinement on the positional and orientational ordering is examined in a system of hard rectangular rods with length L and diameter D (L>D) using the Parsons-Lee modification of the second virial density functional theory. The rods are nonmesogenic (L/D<3)and confined between two parallel hard walls, where the width of the pore (H) is chosen in such a way that both planar (particle's long axis parallel to the walls) and homeotropic (particle's long axis perpendicular to the walls) orderings are possible and a maximum of two layers are allowed to form in the pore. In the e…
Polymer solutions subject to pressure driven flow and in nanoscale slit pores are systematically investigated using the dissipative particle dynamics approach. We investigated the effect of molecular weight, polymer concentration and flow rate on the profiles across the channel of the fluid and polymer velocities, polymers density, and the three components of the polymers radius of gyration. We found that the mean streaming fluid velocity decreases as the polymer molecular weight or/and polymer concentration is increased, and that the deviation of the velocity profile from the parabolic profil…
Nanoconfinement can drastically change the behavior of liquids, puzzling us with counterintuitive properties. Moreover, it is relevant in applications, including decontamination and crystallization control. It still lacks a systematic analysis for fluids with different bulk properties. Here we fill this gap. We compare, by molecular dynamics simulations, three different liquids in a graphene slit pore: (A) A simple fluid, such as argon, described by a Lennard-Jones potential; (B) An anomalous fluid, such as a liquid metal, modeled with an isotropic core-softened potential; (C) Water, the proto…
We study the influence of wetting on the capillary condensation for a simple fluid in a pore-like geometry, where the reference system is an infinitely long slit. The Corner Transfer Matrix Renormalization Group method has been extended to study a two-dimensional Ising model confined in an L x L geometry with equal surface fields. Our results have confirmed that in both geometries the coexistence line shift is governed by the same scaling powers, but their prefactors are different.
A previously developed field-theoretic model [R.D. Coalson et al., J. Chem. Phys. 102, 4584 (1995)] that treats core collisions and Coulomb interactions on the same footing is investigated in order to understand ion size effects on the partition of neutral and charged particles at planar interfaces and the ionic selectivity of slit nanopores. We introduce a variational scheme that can go beyond the mean-field (MF) regime and couple in a consistent way pore modified core interactions, steric effects, electrostatic solvation and image-charge forces, and surface charge induced electrostatic poten…
Using grand canonical Monte Carlo simulations, we investigate the percolation behavior of a square well fluid with an ultra-short range of attraction in three dimension (3D) and in confined geometry. The latter is defined through two parallel and structureless walls (slit-pore). We focus on temperatures above the critical temperature of the (metastable) condensation transition of the 3D system. Investigating a broad range of systems sizes, we first determine the percolation thresholds, i. e., the critical packing fraction for percolation $η_{c}$. For the slit-pore systems, $η_{c}$ is found to …

We develop a theory of charge storage in ultra-narrow slit-like pores of nano\-structured electrodes. Our analysis is based on the Blume-Capel model in external field, which we solve analytically on a Bethe lattice. The obtained solutions allow us to explore the complete phase diagram of confined ionic liquids in terms of the key parameters characterising the system, such as pore ionophilicity, interionic interaction energy and voltage. The phase diagram includes the lines of first and second-order, direct and re-entrant, phase transitions, which are manifested by singularities in the correspo…
We consider capillary condensation transitions occurring in open slits of width $L$ and finite height $H$ immersed in a reservoir of vapour. In this case the pressure at which condensation occurs is closer to saturation compared to that occurring in an infinite slit ($H=\infty$) due to the presence of two menisci which are pinned near the open ends. Using macroscopic arguments we derive a modified Kelvin equation for the pressure, $p_{cc}(L;H)$, at which condensation occurs and show that the two menisci are characterised by an edge contact angle $θ_e$ which is always larger than the equilibriu…
We revisit the classical problem of the behavior of an isolated linear polymer chain in confined spaces, introducing the distinction between two different confinement regimes (the {\it weak} and the {\it strong} confinement regimes, respectively). We then discuss some recent experimental findings concerning the partitioning of individual polymers into protein pores. We also generalize our study to the case of branched polymers, and study the flow-injection properties of such objects into nanoscopic pores, for which the strong confinement regime plays an important role.
Nanopores made with low dimensional semiconducting materials, such as carbon nanotubes and graphene slit pores, are used in supercapacitors. In theories and simulations of their operation, it is often assumed that such pores screen ion-ion interactions like metallic pores, i.e. that screening leads to an exponential decay of the interaction potential with ion separation. By introducing a quantum capacitance that accounts for the density of states in the material, we show that ion-ion interactions in carbon nanotubes and graphene slit pores actually decay algebraically with ion separation. This…

Shape transformations of hairy nanoparticles under confinement are studied using molecular dynamic simulations. We discuss the behavior of these particles in slits with inert or attractive walls. We assume that only chain-wall interactions are attractive. The impact of the strength of interactions with the walls and the width of the slits on the particle configuration is shown. In the case of attractive surfaces, we found new structures in which the chains are connected with both walls and form bridges between them: pillars, symmetrical and asymmetrical spools, and hourglasses. In wide pores w…
We apply a modified mean-field density functional theory to determine the phase behavior of Stockmayer fluids in slitlike pores formed by two walls with identical substrate potentials. Based on the Carnahan-Starling equation of state, a fundamental-measure theory is employed to incorporate the effects of short-ranged hard sphere - like correlations while the long-ranged contributions to the fluid interaction potential are treated perturbatively. The liquid-vapor, ferromagnetic liquid - vapor, and ferromagnetic liquid - isotropic liquid first-order phase separations are investigated. The local …
Density-functional theory is used to investigate the phase behavior of colloidal binary hard-platelet and hard-rod fluids near a single hard wall or confined in a slit pore. The Zwanzig model, in which the orientations of the particles of rectangular shape are restricted to three orthogonal orientations, is analyzed by numerical minimization of the grand potential functional. The density and orientational profiles as well as the surface contributions to the grand potential are determined. The calculations exhibit a wall-induced continuous surface transition from uniaxial to biaxial symmetry fo…
We employ a fast and accurate algorithm to treat dielectric interfaces within molecular dynamics simulations and demonstrate the importance of dielectric boundary forces (DBFs) in two systems of interests in soft-condensed matter science. We investigate a salt solution confined to a slit pore, and a model of a DNA fragment translocating thorugh a narrow pore.
In this two-part study we investigate the phase behaviour of a fluid spatially confined in a semi-infinite rectangular pore formed by three orthogonal walls and connected to a reservoir maintaining constant values of pressure and temperature in the fluid. Far from the capping wall this prototypical two-dimensional system reduces to a one-dimensional slit pore. However, the broken translational symmetry leads to a wetting behavior strikingly different from that of a slit pore. Using a realistic model of an atomic fluid with long-ranged Lennard-Jones fluid-fluid and fluid-substrate interactions,…
We study self-assembly of a binary mixture of components A and B confined in a slit-like pore with the walls modified by the stripes of tethered brushes made of beads of a sort A. The emphasis is on solvent mediated transitions between morphologies when the composition of the mixture varies. For certain limiting cases of the pore geometry we found that an effective reduction of the dimensionality may lead to a quasi one- and two-dimensional demixing. The change of the environment for the chains upon changing the composition of the mixture from polymer melt to a good solvent conditions provides…
The recent measurement of a very low dielectric constant, $ε$, of water confined in nanometric slit pores leads us to reconsider the physical basis of ion partitioning into nanopores. For confined ions in chemical equilibrium with a bulk of dielectric constant $ε_b>ε$, three physical mechanisms, at the origin of ion exclusion in nanopores, are expected to be modified due to this dielectric mismatch: dielectric exclusion at the water-pore interface (with membrane dielectric constant, $ε_m<ε$), the solvation energy related to the difference in Debye-Hückel screening parameters in the pore, $κ$, …
Molecular Dynamics simulations of glycerol confined in $γ$-Al$_2$O$_3$ slit nanopores are used to explain controversial and inconsistent observations reported in the literature regarding the dynamics of viscous fluids in confined geometries. Analysing the effects of the degree of confinement and pore saturation in this system, we found that the presence of the solid/liquid interface and the liquid/gas interface in partially saturated pores are the main contributors for the disruption of the hydrogen bond network of glycerol. Despite the reduction of hydrogen bonds between glycerol molecules ca…
We study by molecular dynamics simulations the thermodynamics of an anomalous fluid confined in a slit pore with one wall structured and attractive and another unstructured and repulsive. We find that the phase diagram of the homogeneous part of the confined fluid is shifted to higher temperatures, densities and pressures with respect to the bulk, but it can be rescaled on the bulk case. We calculate a moderate increase of mobility of the homogeneous confined fluid that we interpret as a consequence of the layering due to confinement and the collective modes due to long-range correlations. We …
We have explored a model for adsorption of water into slit-like nanochannels with two walls chemically modified by grafted polymer layers forming brushes. A version of density functional method is used as theoretical tools. The water-like fluid model adopted from the work of Clark et al. [Mol. Phys., 2006, 104, 3561] adequately reproduces the bulk vapour-liquid coexistence envelope. The polymer layer consists of chain molecules in the framework of pearl-necklace model. Each chain molecule is chemically bonded to the pore walls by a single terminating segment. Our principal focus is in the stud…
We consider a Lebwohl-Lasher model of chiral particles confined in a planar cell (slit pore) with different boundary conditions, and solve it using mean-field theory. The phase behaviour of the system with respect to temperature and pore width is studied. Two phenomena are observed: (i) an isotropic-cholesteric transition which exhibits an oscillatory structure with respect to pore width, and (ii) an infinite set of winding transitions caused by commensuration effects between cholesteric pitch and pore width. The latter transitions have been predicted and analysed by other authors for choleste…
Porous carbon is well known as a good candidate for the development of electrochemical double-layer capacitors. Predominantly, many conventional carbons are microporous and often well described by the assumption of slit pore geometry. However, there is a class of carbons that is significantly different from the others, namely templated mesoporous carbons. In this work, we study electrosorption-induced deformation in CMK-3-like mesopores having nonconvex geometry applying a mean-field approach. The model is based on the modified Poisson-Boltzmann equation taking into account the excluded volume…
Graphene nanochannels are relevant for their possible applications, as in water purification, and for the challenge of understanding how they change the properties of confined liquids. Here, we use all-atom molecular dynamics simulations to investigate water confined in an open graphene slit-pore as a function of its width $w$, down to sub-nm scale. We find that the water translational and rotational dynamics exhibits an oscillatory dependence on $w$, due to water layering. The oscillations in dynamics correlate with those in hydration pressure, which can be negative (hydrophobic attraction), …
We present gravimetrical and optical imaging experiments on the capillarity-driven imbibition of silicone oils in monolithic silica glasses traversed by 3D networks of pores (mesoporous Vycor glass with 6.5 nm or 10 nm pore diameters). As evidenced by a robust square-root-of-time Lucas-Washburn (L-W) filling kinetics, the capillary rise is governed by a balance of capillarity and viscous drag forces in the absence of inertia and gravitational effects over the entire experimental times studied, ranging from a few seconds up to 10 days. A video on the infiltration process corroborates a collecti…
