We employ a fast and accurate algorithm to treat dielectric interfaces within molecular dynamics simulations and demonstrate the importance of dielectric boundary forces (DBFs) in two systems of interests in soft-condensed matter science. We investigate a salt solution confined to a slit pore, and a model of a DNA fragment translocating thorugh a narrow pore.
We investigate the impact of dielectric boundary forces on the translocation process of charged rigid DNA segments through solid neutral nanopores. We assess the electrostatic contribution to the translocation free energy barrier of a model DNA segment by evaluating the potential of mean force in absence and presence of polarization effects by means of coarse-grained molecular dynamics simulations. The effect of induced polarization charges has been taken into account by employing ICC*, a recently developed algorithm that can efficiently compute induced polarization charges induced on suitably…
The molecular mobility of glassy and supercooled liquid states of clotrimazole is studied using broadband dielectric spectroscopy for a wide range of temperatures and frequency. The dielectric loss data of clotrimazole below T$_{g}$, do not show well resolved relaxation. Above T$_{g}$, dielectric loss show the structural $α$-relaxation which is reformed to shoulder like shape at high frequencies due to the secondary relaxation. The relaxation time of $α$-process, $τ_α$ follows Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann equation. The glass transition temperature, $T_{g}$=296K and fragility index, m=50 are obtained …
Isothermal-isobaric molecular dynamics simulations have been performed to examine an ample set of properties of the model water-N,N-dimethylformamide (DMF) mixture as a function of composition. The SPC-E and TIP4P-Ew water models together with two united atom models for DMF [Chalaris M., Samios J., J. Chem. Phys., 2000, 112, 8581; Cordeiro J., Int. J. Quantum Chem., 1997, 65, 709] were used. Our principal analyses concern the behaviour of structural properties in terms of radial distribution functions, and the number of hydrogen bonds between molecules of different species as well as thermodyn…
Rheodielectric spectroscopy is employed, for the first time, to investigate the effect of external shear on the Debyelike relaxation of a model monohydroxy alcohol, i.e., the 2-ethyl-1-hexanol (2E1H). Shear deformation leads to strong acceleration in the structural relaxation, the Debye relaxation, and the terminal relaxation of 2E1H. Moreover, the shear-induced reduction in structural relaxation time, tau_alpha, scales quadratically with that of Debye time, tau_D, and the terminal flow time, tau_f, suggesting a relationship of tau_D*tau_D~tau_alpha. Further analyses reveal tau_D*tau_D/tau_alp…
Polymer melts show a characteristic molecular weight dependent relaxation time that can be related to the unentangled and entangled regime. At high molecular weights, influence of contour length fluctuations and con-straint release cease and pure reptation prevails. With the broad frequency range dielectric spectroscopy can fol-low polymer dynamics over a very broad temperature range, with the additional advantage of recording the spec-tral shape which contains information on reptation. Here we investigate the apparent discrepancy in the molecular weight for the onset of pure reptation from th…
We have investigated thermodynamic and dynamic properties as well as the dielectric constant of water-metha\-nol model mixtures in the entire range of composition by using constant pressure molecular dynamics simulations at ambient conditions. The SPC/E and TIP4P/Ew water models are used in combination with the OPLS united atom modelling for methanol. Changes of the average number of hydrogen bonds between particles of different species and of the fractions of differently bonded molecules are put in correspondence with the behavior of excess mixing volume and enthalpy, of self-diffusion coeffi…
We apply our recently-developed mean-field 'SL-TS2' (two-state Sanchez-Lacombe) model to simultaneously describe dielectric alpha-relaxation time and pressure-volume-temperature (PVT) data in four polymers (polystyrene, poly(methylmethacrylate), poly(vinyl acetate) and poly(cyclohexane methyl acrylate)) and four organic molecular glass formers (ortho-terphenyl, glycerol, PCB-62, and PDE). Previously, it has been shown that for all eight materials, the Casalini-Roland thermodynamical scaling, /tau_{/alpha} = f(TV_{sp}^{/gamma}) (where T is temperature and V_{sp} is specific volume), (Casalini, …
Advances in high-precision dielectric spectroscopy has enabled access to non-linear susceptibilities of polar molecular liquids. The observed non-monotonic behavior has been claimed to provide strong support for theories of dynamic arrest based on thermodynamic amorphous order. Here we approach this question from the perspective of dynamic facilitation, an alternative view focusing on emergent kinetic constraints underlying the dynamic arrest of a liquid approaching its glass transition. We derive explicit expressions for the frequency-dependent higher-order dielectric susceptibilities exhibit…
We present the results of an analytical theory and simulations of the field inside a cavity created in a dipolar liquid placed in a uniform external electric field. The analytical theory shows that the limit of continuum electrostatics is reached through a singularity in the microscopic response function responsible for a non-decaying longitudinal polarization wave. Fields in microscopic cavities are much different from macroscopic predictions, and low-polarity dielectrics are predicted to have a continuum limit distinct from the solution of Maxwell's equations. Computer Monte Carlo simulation…

In this Letter, we present a simple model of aqueous interfacial molecular structure and we use this model to isolate the effects of hydrogen bonding on the dielectric properties of the liquid water-vapor interface. By comparing this model to the results of atomistic simulation we show that the anisotropic distribution of molecular orientations at the interface can be understood by considering the behavior of a single water molecule interacting with the average interfacial density field via an empirical hydrogen bonding potential. We illustrate that the depth dependence of this orientational a…
We present an accurate free-energy functional for liquid water written in terms of a set of effective potential fields in which fictitious noninteracting water molecules move. The functional contains an \emph{exact} expression of the entropy of noninteracting molecules and thus provides an ideal starting point for the inclusion of complex inter-molecular interactions which depend on the \emph{orientation} of the interacting molecules. We show how an excess free-energy functional can be constructed to reproduce the following properties of water: the dielectric response; the experimental site-si…
The glassy dynamics of plastic-crystalline cyclo-octanol and ortho-carborane, where only the molecular reorientational degrees of freedom freeze without long-range order, is investigated by nonlinear dielectric spectroscopy. Marked differences to canonical glass formers show up: While molecular cooperativity governs the glassy freezing, it leads to a much weaker slowing down of molecular dynamics than in supercooled liquids. Moreover, the observed nonlinear effects cannot be explained with the same heterogeneity scenario recently applied to canonical glass formers. This supports ideas that mol…
We define the dielectric constant (susceptibility) that should enter the Maxwell boundary value problem when applied to microscopic dielectric interfaces. The dielectric constant (susceptibility) of the interface is defined by exact linear-response equations involving correlations of statistically fluctuating interface polarization and the Coulomb interaction energy of external charges with the dielectric. The theory is applied to the interface between water and spherical solutes of altering size studied by molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. The effective dielectric constant of interfacial w…
In this paper, based on the numerical calculation of total energy utilizing the Green's function method, we found that the external electric field applied to a microparticle-suspended nematic liquid crystal cell, if reaching a critical value, combined with its direction, surface anchoring feature and molecular dielectric anisotropy, is possible to create an anisotropic "bubble" around the microparticle with a vertical fast "lane", in which the microparticle can, driven by the asymmetric buoyant force, vertically move swiftly from the cell's midplane to a new equilibrium position, triggering a …
We have employed molecular dynamics simulations based on the TIP4P/2005 water model to investigate the local structural, dynamical, and dielectric properties of the two recently reported body-centered-cubic and face-centered-cubic plastic crystal phases of water. Our results reveal significant differences in the local orientational structure and rotational dynamics of water molecules for the two polymorphs. The probability distributions of trigonal and tetrahedral order parameters exhibit a multi-modal structure, implying the existence of significant local orientational heterogeneities, partic…
In this paper we perform molecular dynamics simulations of a spherical polyelectrolyte brush and counterions in a salt-free medium. The dielectric discontinuity on the grafted nanoparticle surface is taken into account by the method of image charges. Properties of the polyelectrolyte brush are obtained for different parameters, including valency of the counterions, radius of the nanoparticle, and the brush total charge. The monovalent counterions density profiles are obtained and compared with a simple mean-field theoretical approach. The theory allows us to obtain osmotic properties of the sy…
We extend results developed by Chandler [J. Chem. Phys. 65, 2925 (1976)] for the dielectric constant of neutral site-site molecular models to mixtures of both charged and uncharged molecules. This provides a unified derivation connecting the Stillinger-Lovett moment conditions for ions to standard results for the dielectric constant for polar species and yields exact expressions for the small-k expansion of the two-point intermolecular charge-density function used to determine the total Coulomb energy. The latter is useful in determining corrections to the thermodynamics of uniform site-site m…
For charged systems in heterogeneous dielectric media, a key obstacle for molecular dynamics (MD) simulations is the need to solve the Poisson equation in the media. This obstacle can be bypassed using MD methods that treat the local polarization charge density as a dynamic variable, but such approaches require access to a true free energy functional; one that evaluates to the equilibrium electrostatic energy at its minimum. In this letter, we derive the needed functional. As an application, we develop a Car-Parrinello MD method for the simulation of free charges present near a spherical emuls…

The effect of the applied trajectory length on the convergence of the static dielectric constant and the self-diffusion coefficient were examined for the SPC/E water model in the NVT ensemble with different system size at 293 K. Very long simulation times of 6-8 ns were employed in order to track the convergence of these properties. Temperature dependence and isotope effects, via using D$_2$O instead of H$_2$O, were also investigated. A simulation for the polarizable SWM4-DP model was also carried out to compare the effect of different potential models. Radial distribution functions and the ne…

In the present work, a detailed analysis of the glassy behavior and the relaxation dynamics of the liquid crystal dimer α-(4-cyanobiphenyl-4'-yloxy)-ω-(1-pyrenimine-benzylidene-4'-oxy) heptane (CBO7O.Py) throughout both nematic and smectic A mesophases by means of broadband dielectric spectroscopy has been performed. CBO7O.Py shows three different dielectric relaxation modes and two glass transition (Tg) temperatures: the higher Tg is due to the freezing of the molecular motions responsible of the relaxation mode with the lowest frequency (μ1L); the lower Tg is due to the motions responsible o…

We have performed dielectric spectroscopy on the molecular glass-formers glycerol, propylene carbonate (PC) and the ionic melts CKN and CRN. The frequency range covers almost 20 decades from some micro-Hz to some THz. The meausrement results are compared to neutron and light scattering data and analysed with mode coupling theory.
One of the hallmarks of molecular dynamics in deeply supercooled liquids is the non-exponential character of the relaxation functions. It has been a long standing issue if 'universal' features govern the lineshape of glassy dynamics independent of any particular molecular structure or interaction. In the paper, we elucidate this matter by giving a comprehensive comparison of the spectral shape of depolarized light scattering and dielectric data of deeply supercooled liquids. The light scattering spectra of very different systems, e.g. hydrogen bonding and van der Waals liquids but also ionic s…
The relaxation behaviour of monohydroxy alcohols (monoalcohols) in broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) is usually dominated by the Debye process. This process is regarded as a signature of the dynamics of transient supramolecular structures formed by H-bonding. In phenyl propanols the steric hindrance of the phenyl ring is assumed to influence chain formation and thereby to decrease or even suppress the intensity of the Debye process. In the present paper we study this effect in a systematic series of structural isomers of phenyl-1-propanol in comparison with 1-propanol. It turns out that …
Gigahertz-to-terahertz spectroscopy of macromolecules in aqueous environments provides an important approach for identifying their global and transient molecular structures, as well as directly assessing hydrogen-bonding. We report dielectric properties of zwitterionic dodecylphosphocholine (DPC) micelles in aqueous solutions over a wide frequency range, from 50 MHz to 1.12 THz. The dielectric relaxation spectra reveal different polarization mechanisms at the molecular level, reflecting the complexity of DPC micelle-water interactions. We have made a deconvolution of the spectra into different…
We present a theory of the dielectric response of a solution containing large solutes, of a nanometer size, in a molecular solvent. It combines the molecular dipole moment of the solute with the polarization of a large subensemble of solvent molecules at the solute-solvent interface. The goal of the theory is two-fold: (i) to formulate the problem of the dielectric response avoiding the reliance on the cavity-field concepts of dielectric theories and (ii) to separate the non-additive polarization of the interface, jointly produced by the external field of the laboratory experiment and the solu…
Molecular dynamics of two water models, SPC/E and TIP3P, at a number of temperatures is used to test the Kivelson-Madden equation connecting single-particle and collective dielectric relaxation times through the Kirkwood factor. The relation is confirmed by simulations and used to estimate the nonlinear effect of the electric field on the dielectric relaxation time. We show that the main effect of the field comes through slowing down of the single-particle rotational dynamics and the relative contribution of the field-induced alteration of the Kirkwood factor is insignificant for water. Theori…
The strengths and short-comings of the point-dipole model for polar fluids of spherical molecules are illustrated by considering the physically more relevant case of extended dipoles formed by two opposite charges $\pm q$ separated by a distance $d$ (dipole moment $μ=q d$). Extensive Molecular Dynamics simulations on a high density dipolar fluid are used to analyse the dependence of the pair structure, dielectric constant $\eps$ and dynamics as a function of the ratio $d/σ$ ($\sig$ is the molecular diameter), for a fixed dipole moment $μ$. The point dipole model is found to agree well with the…
The results are reported of molecular dynamics simulations of the static longitudinal dielectric and response functions for molten AgI at 923 K using two ionic models. The first one is a rigid ion model, while in the second the induced dipole moments of the anions are added to the effective pair potentials of the first. It is derived theoretically that the dielectric functions for the polarizable ion model are determined by spatial correlations of charge and dipole moment densities. The charge structure factor at long wavelengths is also studied.
We report dielectric relaxation spectroscopy experiments on two rod-like liquid crystals of the cyanobiphenyl family (5CB and 6CB) confined in tubular nanochannels with 7 nm radius and 340 micrometer length in a monolithic, mesoporous silica membrane. The measurements were performed on composites for two distinct regimes of fractional filling: monolayer coverage at the pore walls and complete filling of the pores. For the layer coverage a slow surface relaxation dominates the dielectric properties. For the entirely filled channels the dielectric spectra are governed by two thermally-activated …
The relaxation dynamics and thermodynamic properties of supercooled and glassy gambogic acid are investigated using both theory and experiment. We measure the temperature dependence of the relaxation times in three polymorphs (alpha-, beta-, and gamma-form). To gain insight into the relaxation processes, we propose a theoretical approach to quantitatively understand nature of these three relaxations. The alpha-relaxation captures cooperative motions of molecules while the beta-process is mainly governed by local dynamics of a single molecule within the cage formed by its nearest neighbors. Bas…
We study water between parallel metal walls under applied electric field accounting for the image effect at $T=298$ K. The electric field due to the surface charges serves to attract and orient nearby water molecules, while it tends to a constant determined by the mean surface charge density away from the walls. We find Stern boundary layers with thickness about $5$ $\rm Å$ and a homogeneously polarized bulk region. The molecules in the layers more sensitively respond to the applied field than in the bulk. As a result, the potential drop in the layers is larger than that in the bulk unless the…
The low-frequency collective vibrational modes in proteins as well as the protein-water interface have been suggested as dominant factors controlling the efficiency of biochemical reactions and biological energy transport. It is thus crucial to uncover the mystery of hydration structure and dynamics as well as their coupling to collective motions of proteins in aqueous solutions. Here we report dielectric properties of aqueous bovine serum albumin protein solutions as a model system using an extremely sensitive dielectric spectrometer with frequencies spanning from megahertz to terahertz. The …
The structure of polar liquids and electrolytic solutions, such as water and aqueous electrolytes, at interfaces underlies numerous phenomena in physics, chemistry, biology, and engineering. In this work, we develop a continuum theory that captures the essential features of dielectric screening by polar liquids at charged interfaces, including oscillations in charge and mass, starting from the molecular properties of the solvent. The theory predicts an anisotropic dielectric tensor of interfacial polar liquids previously studied in molecular dynamics simulations. We explore the effect of the i…
Dipolar susceptibility of interfacial water and the corresponding interface dielectric constant were calculated from numerical molecular dynamics simulations for neutral and charged states of buckminsterfullerene C$_{60}$. Dielectric constants in the range 10--22, depending on temperature and solute charge, were found. The hydration water undergoes a structural crossover as a function of the solute charge. Its main signatures include the release of dangling O-H bonds pointing toward the solute and the change in the preferential orientations of hydration water from those characterizing hydropho…
In this work we provide a thorough examination of the nonlinear dielectric properties of a succinonitrile-glutaronitrile mixture, representing one of the rare example of a plastic crystal with fragile glassy dynamics. The detected alteration of the complex dielectric permittivity under high fields can be explained considering the heterogeneous nature of glassy dynamics and a field-induced variation of entropy. While the first mechanism was also found in structural glass formers, the latter effect seems to be typical for plastic crystals. Morover, the third harmonic component of the dielectric …
Employing recent advances in response theory and nonequilibrium ensemble reweighting, we study the dynamic and static correlations that give rise to an electric field-dependent ionic conductivity in electrolyte solutions. We consider solutions modeled with both implicit and explicit solvents, with different dielectric properties, and at multiple concentrations. Implicit solvent models at low concentrations and small dielectric constants exhibit strongly field-dependent conductivities. We compared these results to the Onsager-Wilson theory of the Wien effect, which provides a qualitatively cons…

Dielectric properties are intimately related to the content and composition of the liquid phase present in micro- and mesoporous materials. The presence of ions is recognized to affect the dielectric response of electrolytes in a complex way that depends on the ion-water and ion-ion interactions and respective concentrations. Pore solutions in cement-based materials are complex and age-dependent exhibiting different ion-pair states, which make them an interesting candidate for the study of the complex pore solution found in geomaterials in general. Here, we study the dielectric properties of b…
Hexakis(n-alkyloxy)triphenylene) (HATn) consisting of an aromatic triphenylene core and alkyl side chains are model discotic liquid crystal (DLC) systems forming a columnar mesophase. In the mesophase, the molecules of HATn self-assemble in columns, which has one-dimensional high charge carrier mobility along the columns. Here, a homologous series of HATn with different length of the alkyl chain (n=5,6,8,10,12) is investigated using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), broadband dielectric spectroscopy (BDS) and advanced calorimetric techniques including fast scanning calorimetry (FSC) and…
