We investigate self-similar solutions which are asymptotic to the Friedmann universe at spatial infinity and contain a scalar field with potential. The potential is required to be exponential by self-similarity. It is found that there are two distinct one-parameter families of asymptotic solutions, one is asymptotic to the proper Friedmann universe, while the other is asymptotic to the quasi-Friedmann universe, i.e., the Friedmann universe with anomalous solid angle. The asymptotically proper Friedmann solution is possible only if the universe is accelerated or the potential is negative. If the potential is positive, the density perturbation in the asymptotically proper Friedmann solution rapidly falls off at spatial infinity, while the mass perturbation is compensated. In the asymptotically quasi-Friedmann solution, the density perturbation falls off only in proportion to the inverse square of the areal radius and the relative mass perturbation approaches a nonzero constant at spatial infinity. The present result shows that a necessary condition holds in order that a self-gravitating body grows self-similarly due to the constant accretion of quintessence in an accelerating universe.
Based on the asymptotic analysis of ordinary differential equations, we classify all spherically symmetric self-similar solutions to the Einstein equations which are asymptotically Friedmann at large distances and contain a perfect fluid with equation of state $p=(γ-1)μ$ with $0<γ<2/3$. This corresponds to a ``dark energy'' fluid and the Friedmann solution is accelerated in this case due to anti-gravity. This extends the previous analysis of spherically symmetric self-similar solutions for fluids with positive pressure ($γ>1$). However, in the latter case there is an additional parameter assoc…
We investigate spherically symmetric self-similar solutions in Brans-Dicke theory. Assuming a perfect fluid with the equation of state $p=(γ-1)μ(1 \le γ<2)$, we show that there are no non-trivial solutions which approach asymptotically to the flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetime if the energy density is positive. This result suggests that primordial black holes in Brans-Dicke theory cannot grow at the same rate as the size of the cosmological particle horizon.
For a 4-dimensional spatially-flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker universe with a scalar field $ϕ(x)$, potential $V(ϕ)$ and constant equation of state $w=p/ρ$, we show that an expanding solution characterized by $ε=3(1+w)/2$ produces the same scalar perturbations as a contracting solution with $\hatε=1/ε$. The same symmetry applies to both the dominant and subdominant scalar perturbation modes. This result admits a simple physical interpretation and generalizes to $d$ spacetime dimensions if we define $ε\equiv [(2d-5)+(d-1)w]/(d-2)$.
We obtain the correct hamiltonian which describes the dynamics of classes of asymptotic open Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) spacetimes, which includes Tolman geometries. We calculate the surface term that has to be added to the usual hamiltonian of General Relativity in order to obtain an improved hamiltonian with well defined functional derivatives. For asymptotic flat FLRW spaces, this surface term is zero, but for asymptotic negative curvature FLRW spaces it is not null in general. In the particular case of the Tolman geometries, they vanish. The surface term evaluated on a pa…
In this work we use a recently developed nonintegrability theorem of Morales and Ramis to prove that the Friedmann Robertson Walker cosmological model with a conformally coupled massive scalar field is nonintegrable.
The quantum Casimir condensate of a conformal massive scalar field in a compact Friedmann universe is considered in the static approximation. The Abel-Plana formula is used for renormalization of divergent series in the condensate calculation. A differential relation between the static Casimir energy density and static Casimir condensate is derived.
We study the time evolution of small classical perturbations in a gauge invariant way for a complex scalar field in the early zero curvature Friedmann-Lema\^ıtre universe. We, thus, generalize the analysis which has been done so far for a real scalar field. We give also a derivation of the Jeans wavenumber in the Newtonian regime starting from the general relativistic equations, avoiding the so-called Jeans swindle. During the inflationary phase, whose length depends on the value of the bosonic charge, the behavior of the perturbations turns out to be the same as for a real scalar field. In th…
In the paper, hep-th/0501055 (R.G. Cai and S.P. Kim, JHEP {\bf 0502}, 050 (2005)), it is shown that by applying the first law of thermodynamics to the apparent horizon of an FRW universe and assuming the geometric entropy given by a quarter of the apparent horizon area, one can derive the Friedmann equations describing the dynamics of the universe with any spatial curvature; using the entropy formula for the static spherically symmetric black holes in Gauss-Bonnet gravity and in more general Lovelock gravity, where the entropy is not proportional to the horizon area, one can also obtain the co…
The evolution of weak discontinuity is investigated in the flat FRW universe with a single scalar field and with multiple scalar fields. We consider both massless scalar fields and scalar fields with exponential potentials. Then we find that a new type of instability, i.e. kink instability develops in the flat FRW universe with massless scalar fields. The kink instability develops with scalar fields with considerably steep exponential potentials, while less steep exponential potentials do not suffer from kink instability. In particular, assisted inflation with multiple scalar fields does not s…
In this paper we present noncommutative version of scalar field cosmology. We find the noncommutative Friedmann equations as well as the noncommutative Klein-Gordon equation. Interestingly the noncommutative contributions are only present up to second order in the noncommutitive parameter. Finally we conclude that if we want a noncommutative minisuperspace with a constant noncommutative parameter as viable phenomenological model, the noncommuative parameter is very small.
Calculations are presented for creation of massive and massless scalar particles coupled to Gauss-Bonnet type curvature in Friedmann cosmological models. It has been shown that, for fields of mass~$m$, the effect of the coupling parameter $ζ$ with the Gauss-Bonnet invariant is insignificant if $ζm^2 \ll 1 $. In all cases under consideration, the created particle number is compatible by order of magnitude with the number of causally disconnected space-time regions by the Compton time, corresponding $1/m$ or $\sqrtζ$.
We consider instability of the Friedmann world model to the second-order in perturbations. We present the perturbed set of equations up to the second-order in the Friedmann background world model with general spatial curvature and the cosmological constant. We consider systems with the completely general imperfect fluids, the minimally coupled scalar fields, the electro-magnetic field, and the generalized gravity theories. We also present the case of null geodesic equations, and the one based on the relativistic Boltzmann equation. In due stage a decomposition is made for the scalar-, vector- …
We consider the possible existence of self-similar solutions containing black holes in a Friedmann background with a stiff fluid or a scalar field. We carefully study the relationship between the self-similar equations in these two cases and emphasize the crucial role of the similarity horizon. We show that there is no self-similar black hole solution surrounded by an exact or asymptotically flat Friedmann background containing a massless scalar field. This result also applies for a scalar field with a potential, providing the universe is decelerating. However, if there is a potential and the …
We study inflationary universe models that are characterized by a single scalar inflaton field. The study of these models are based on two dynamical equations; one corresponding to the Klein-Gordon equation for the inflaton field, and the other, to a generalized Friedmann equation. After describing the kinematics and dynamics of the models, we determine in some detail scalar density perturbations and relic gravitational waves. We apply this approach to the Friedmann-Chern-Simons and the brane-world inflationary models.
We study Friedmann inflation in general Horava-Lifshitz (HL) gravity with detailed and non-detailed but also without the projectability conditions. Accordingly, we derive the modifications in the Friedmann equations due to single scalar field potentials describing power-law and minimal-supersymmetrically extended inflation. By implementing four types of the equations-of-state charactering the cosmic background geometry, the dependence of the tensorial and spectral density fluctuations and their ratio on the inflation field is determined. The latter characterizes the time evolution of the infla…
We propose and study a semi-classical cosmological system akin to the Newton-Schrödinger equation where matter field evolution is determined by time dependent Schrödinger equation. The resulting dynamics is one where the scale factor self-consistently informs the quantum evolution of the scalar field wave function via the Friedmann equation. We study various potentials, and show that for each case, inflation arises naturally, without fine-tuning, for arbitrary initial wave functions for the scalar field. Furthermore, due to zero-point quantum fluctuations of the scalar field, the equation of s…
We study a spatially flat Friedmann model containing a pressureless perfect fluid (dust) and a scalar field with an unbounded from below potential of the form $V(\fii)=W_0 - V_0\sinh(\sqrt{3/2}κ\fii)$, where the parameters $W_0$ and $V_0$ are arbitrary and $κ=\sqrt{8πG_N}=M_p^{-1}$. The model is integrable and all exact solutions describe the recollapsing universe. The behavior of the model near both initial and final points of evolution is analyzed. The model is consistent with the observational parameters. We single out the exact solution with the present-day values of acceleration parameter…
This paper is devoted to the approach to gravity as a theory of a surface embedded in a flat ambient space. After the brief review of the properties of original theory by Regge and Teitelboim we concentrate on its field-theoretic reformulation, which we call splitting theory. In this theory embedded surfaces are defined through the constant value surfaces of some set of scalar fields in high-dimensional Minkowski space. We obtain an exact expressions for this scalar fields in the case of Friedmann universe. We also discuss the features of quantisation procedure for this field theory.
The evolution of the closed Friedmann Universe with a packet of short scalar waves is considered with the help of the Wheeler--DeWitt equation. The packet ensures conservation of homogeneity and isotropy of the metric on average. It is shown that during tunneling the amplitudes of short waves of a scalar field can increase catastrophically promptly if their influence to the metric do not take into account. This effect is similar to the Rubakov-effect of catastrophic particle creation calculated already in 1984. In our approach to the problem it is possible to consider self-consistent dynamics …
We discuss whether some perturbed Friedmann-Robertson-Walker (FRW) universes could be creatable, i. e., could have vanishing energy, linear momentum and angular momentum, as it could be expectable if the Universe arose as a quantum fluctuation. On account of previous results, the background is assumed to be either closed (with very small curvature) or flat. In the first case, fully arbitrary linear perturbations are considered; whereas in the flat case, it is assumed the existence of: (i) inflationary scalar perturbations, that is to say, Gaussian adiabatic scalar perturbations having an spect…
We show that simple scalar field models can give rise to curvature singularities in the effective Friedmann dynamics of Loop Quantum Cosmology (LQC). We find singular solutions for spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies with a canonical scalar field and a negative exponential potential, or with a phantom scalar field and a positive potential. While LQC avoids big bang or big rip type singularities, we find sudden singularities where the Hubble rate is bounded, but the Ricci curvature scalar diverges. We conclude that the effective equations of LQC are not in themselves sufficien…
We discuss several aspects of quantum field theory of a scalar field in a Friedmann universe, clarifying and highlighting several conceptual and technical issues. (A) We show that one can map the dynamics of (1) a massless scalar field in a universe with power law expansion to (2) a massive scalar field in the de Sitter spacetime, which allows us to understand several features of either system and clarifies several issues related to the massless limit. (B) We obtain a useful integral representation for the Euclidean Green's function for the de Sitter spacetime, by relating it to the solution o…
We study the effective cosmological dynamics, emerging as the hydrodynamics of simple condensate states, of a group field theory model for quantum gravity coupled to a massless scalar field and reduced to its isotropic sector. The quantum equations of motion for these group field theory condensate states are given in relational terms with respect to the scalar field, from which effective dynamics for spatially flat, homogeneous and isotropic space-times can be extracted. The result is a generalization of the Friedmann equations, including quantum gravity modifications, in a specific regime of …
In a previous work [S. Rahbardehghan et al. in Phys. Lett. B 750, 627 (2015)], we considered a simple brane-world model; a single $4$-dimensional brane embedded in a $5$-dimensional de Sitter (dS) space-time. Then, by including a conformally coupled scalar field in the bulk, we studied the induced Casimir energy-momentum tensor. Technically, the Krein-Gupta-Bleuler (KGB) quantization scheme as a covariant and renormalizable quantum field theory in dS space was used to perform the calculations. In the present paper, we generalize this study to a less idealized, but physically motivated, scenari…
We report a new symmetry of the Einstein-Friedmann equations for spatially flat Friedmann- Lemaître-Robertson-Walker universes. We discuss its application to barotropic perfect fluids and its use as a solution-generating technique for scalar field universes.
Electrodynamics for self-interacting scalar fields in spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker space-times is studied. The corresponding one-loop field equation for the expectation value of the complex scalar field in the conformal vacuum is derived. For exponentially expanding universes, the equations for the Bogoliubov coefficients describing the coupling of the scalar field to gravity are solved numerically. They yield a non-local correction to the Coleman-Weinberg effective potential which does not modify the pattern of minima found in static de Sitter space. Such a correction contains a …
We construct and discuss Hadamard states for both scalar and Dirac spinor fields in a large class of spatially flat Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spacetimes characterised by an initial phase either of exponential or of power-law expansion. The states we obtain can be interpreted as being in thermal equilibrium at the time when the scale factor a has a specific value a=a_0. In the case a_0=0, these states fulfil a strict KMS condition on the boundary of the spacetime, which is either a cosmological horizon, or a Big Bang hypersurface. Furthermore, in the conformally invariant case, they are confor…
For the minimally coupled scalar field in Einstein's theory of gravitation we look for the space of solutions within the class of closed Friedmann universe models. We prove that D = 1 or D > 1, where D is the (fractal) dimension of the set of solutions which can be integrated up to t to infinity. (D > 0 was conjectured by PAGE (1984)). We discuss concepts like ``the probability of the appearance of a sufficiently long inflationary phase" and argue that it is primarily a probability measure q in the space V of solutions (and not in the space of initial conditions) which has to be applied. q is …
The classical and quantum dynamics of the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker Universe with massless scalar and massive fermion matter field as a source is discussed in the framework of the Dirac generalized Hamiltonian formalism. The Hamiltonian reduction of this constrained system is realized for two cases of minimal and conformal coupling between gravity and matter. It is shown that in both cases for all values of curvature, of maximally symmetric space there exists a time independent reduced local Hamiltonian which describes the dynamics of the cosmic scale factor. The relevance of conformal time-l…
Stability analysis on the De Sitter universe in pure gravity theory is known to be useful in many aspects. We first show how to complete the proof of an earlier argument based on a redundant field equation. It is shown further that the stability condition applies to $k \ne 0$ Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spaces based on the non-redundant Friedmann equation derived from a simple effective Lagrangian. We show how to derive this expression for the Friedmann equation of pure gravity theory. This expression is also generalized to include scalar field interactions.
The problem of particle creation in cosmology concerning whether the results for the number of particles are infinite or finite is discussed for scalar and spinor particles in Friedmann expanding Universe. It is shown that the results are always finite if one puts in case of scalar particles creation a special term into the Lagrangian. Numerical estimates of the effect of particle creation are made. The role of creation of superheavy particles in cosmology is discussed.
In loop quantum cosmology the quantum dynamics is well understood. We approximate the full quantum dynamics in the infinite dimensional Hilbert space by projecting it on a finite dimensional submanifold thereof, spanned by suitably chosen semiclassical states. This submanifold is isomorphic with the classical phase space and the projected dynamical flow provides effective equations incorporating the leading quantum corrections to the classical equations of motion. Numerical work has been done using quantum states which are semiclassical at late times. These states follow the classical trajecto…
The classical and quantum models of the Friedmann universe originally filled with a scalar field and radiation have been studied. The radiation has been used to specify a reference frame that makes it possible to remove ambiguities in choosing the time coordinate. Solutions to the Einstein and Schroedinger equations have been studied under the assumption that the rate of scalar-field variation is much less than the rate of universe expansion (contraction). It has been shown that, under certain conditions, the quantum universe can be in quasistationary states. The probability that the universe …
Recently, Chamseddine and Mukhanov introduced a higher-derivative scalar-tensor theory which leads to a modified Friedmann equation allowing for bouncing solutions. As we note in the present work, this Friedmann equation turns out to reproduce exactly the loop quantum cosmology effective dynamics for a flat isotropic and homogeneous space-time. We generalize this result to obtain a class of scalar-tensor theories, belonging to the family of mimetic gravity, which all reproduce the loop quantum cosmology effective dynamics for flat, closed and open isotropic and homogeneous space-times.
In a previous work the authors have solved the Einstein equations of General Relativity for a class of metrics with constant spatial curvature, where it was found a non vanishing Weyl tensor in the presence of a primordial magnetic field with an anisotropic pressure component. Here, we perform the perturbative analysis of this model in order to study the gravitational stability under linear scalar perturbations. For this purpose, we take the Quasi-Maxwellian formalism of General Relativity as our framework, which offers a naturally covariant and gauge-invariant approach to deal with perturbati…
We analyze minimally coupled massless scalar field in a Friedmann (FRW) universe in conformal co-ordinates to model the evolution of tensor perturbations and study the structure of the Wightman function therein. Using a duality map from a power law FRW universe to the de Sitter universe for such fields we obtain unequal time commutation relations between quantum field variables. We demonstrate that the commutation relations are invariant under state change and/or vacuum state selection. Using such commutators it is then possible to construct out of time ordered commutators (OTOC) in the FRW un…
We analyze solutions to Friedmann-Robertson-Walker cosmologies in Brans-Dicke theory, where a scalar field is coupled to gravity. Matter is modelled by a $γ$-law perfect fluid, including false-vacuum energy as a special case. Through a change of variables, we reduce the field equations from fourth order to second order, and they become equivalent to a two-dimensional dynamical system. We then analyze the entire solution space of this dynamical system, and find that many qualitative features of these cosmologies can be gleaned, including standard non-inflationary or extended inflationary expans…
In the present paper we study equations of state of Casimir vacuum of massive scalar field and massive bispinor field in compact Friedmann Universe. With use of the Abel-Plana formula the renormalization of divergent series for calculation of the quantum means of operators is implemented.
We clarify the procedure for expressing the Friedmann equation in terms of directly measurable cosmological scalars constructed out of higher derivatives of the scale factor. We carry out this procedure for pure dust, Chaplygin gas and generalised Chaplygin gas energy-momentum tensors. In each case it leads to a constraint on the scalars thus giving rise to a test of General Relativity. We also discuss a formulation of the Friedmann equation as unparametrised geodesic motion and its connection with the Lagrangian treatment of perfect fluids coupled to gravity.
An explicit and complete set of constants of the motion are constructed algorithmically for Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) models consisting of an arbitrary number of non-interacting species. The inheritance of constants of the motion from simpler models as more species are added is stressed. It is then argued that all FLRW models admit what amounts to a unique candidate for a gravitational epoch function (a dimensionless scalar invariant derivable from the Riemann tensor without differentiation which is monotone throughout the evolution of the universe). The same relations that le…
A general class of cosmological models driven by a nonlocal scalar field inspired by the string field theory is studied. Using the fact that the considering linear nonlocal model is equivalent to an infinite number of local models we have found an exact special solution of the nonlocal Friedmann equations. This solution describes a monotonically increasing Universe with the phantom dark energy.
We use a combination of numerical and analytical methods, exploiting the equations derived in a preceding paper, to classify all spherically symmetric self-similar solutions which are asymptotically Friedmann at large distances and contain a perfect fluid with equation of state $p=(γ-1)μ$ with $0<γ<2/3$. The expansion of the Friedmann universe is accelerated in this case. We find a one-parameter family of self-similar solutions representing a black hole embedded in a Friedmann background. This suggests that, in contrast to the positive pressure case, black holes in a universe with dark energy …
Motivated by the recent interest in cosmologies arising from energy density modifications to the Friedmann equation, we analyse the scaling behaviour for a broad class of these cosmologies comprised of scalar fields and background barotropic fluid sources. In particular, we determine the corresponding scalar field potentials which lead to attractor scaling solutions in a wide class of braneworld and dark energy scenarios. We show how a number of recent proposals for modifying the Friedmann equation can be thought of as being dual to one another, and determine the conditions under which such du…
In the context of Brans-Dicke scalar tensor theory of gravitation, the cosmological Friedmann equation which relates the expansion rate $H$ of the universe to the various fractions of energy density is analyzed rigorously. It is shown that Brans-Dicke scalar tensor theory of gravitation brings a negligible correction to the matter density component of Friedmann equation. Besides, in addition to $Ω_Λ$ and $Ω_{M}$ in standard Einstein cosmology, another density parameter, $Ω_{_Δ}$, is expected by the theory. This implies that if $Ω_{_Δ}$ is found to be nonzero, data will favor this model instead…
We describe non-flat standard Friedmann cosmology of canonical scalar field with barotropic fluid in form of non-linear Schrödinger-type (NLS) formulation in which all cosmological dynamical quantities are expressed in term of Schrödinger quantities as similar to those in time-independent quantum mechanics. We assume the expansion to be superfast, i.e. phantom expansion. We report all Schrödinger-analogous quantities to scalar field cosmology. Effective equation of state coefficient is analyzed and illustrated. We show that in a non-flat universe, there is no fixed $w_{\rm eff}$ value for the …
One approach to defining dynamics for quantum gravity in a naturally timeless setting is to select a suitable matter degree of freedom as a 'clock' before quantisation. This idea of deparametrisation was recently introduced in group field theory leading to a Hamiltonian formulation in which states or operators evolve with respect to the clock given by a free massless scalar field, similar to what happens in deparametrised models in quantum cosmology. Here we extend the construction of Hamiltonian group field theory to models with multiple scalar matter fields, encountering new features and tec…
Scalar field cosmologies with a generalized harmonic potential and a matter fluid with a barotropic Equation of State (EoS) with barotropic index $γ$ for the Locally Rotationally Symmetric (LRS) Bianchi I and flat Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker (FLRW) metrics are investigated. Methods from the theory of averaging of nonlinear dynamical systems are used to prove that time-dependent systems and their corresponding time-averaged versions have the same late-time dynamics. Therefore, the simplest time-averaged system determines the future asymptotic behavior. Depending on the values of $γ$, th…
We study integrability by quadrature of a spatially flat Friedmann model containing both a minimally coupled scalar field $ϕ$ with an exponential potential $V(ϕ)\sim\exp[-\sqrt{6}σκϕ]$, $κ=\sqrt{8πG_N}$, of arbitrary sign and a perfect fluid with barotropic equation of state $p=(1-h)ρ$. From the mathematical view point the model is pseudo-Euclidean Toda-like system with 2 degrees of freedom. We apply the methods developed in our previous papers, based on the Minkowsky-like geometry for 2 characteristic vectors depending on the parameters $σ$ and $h$. In general case the problem is reduced to i…
We study the evolution of a homogeneous and isotropic spacetime whose spatial sections have three-torus topology, coupled to a massless scalar field with small scalar perturbations within loop quantum cosmology. We consider a proposal for the effective dynamics based on a previous hybrid quantization completed by us. Consequently, we introduce a convenient gauge fixing and adopt reduced canonical variables adapted to that hybrid quantum description. Besides, we keep backreaction contributions on the background coming from terms quadratic in the perturbations in the action of the system. We car…
A highly excited Friedmann universe filled with a scalar field and radiation has been considered. On the basis of a direct solution to the quantum-mechanical problem with a well-defined time variable, it has been shown that such a universe can have features (energy density, scale factor, Hubble constant, density parameter, matter mass, equivalent number of baryons, age, dimensions of large-scale fluctuations, amplitude of fluctuations of cosmic microwave background radiation temperature) identical to those of the currently observed Universe.
The recently proposed theory of "Asymptotically Free Mimetic Gravity" is extended to the general non-homogeneous, spatially non-flat case. We present a modified theory of gravity which is free of higher derivatives of the metric. In this theory asymptotic freedom of gravity implies the existence of a minimal black hole with vanishing Hawking temperature. Introducing a spatial curvature dependent potential, we moreover obtain non-singular, bouncing modifications of spatially non-flat Friedmann and Bianchi universes.
We investigate the phase-space of a flat FRW universe including both a scalar field, $ϕ,$ coupled to matter, and radiation. The model is inspired in scalar-tensor theories of gravity, and thus, related with $F(R)$ theories through conformal transformation. The aim of the chapter is to extent several results to the more realistic situation when radiation is included in the cosmic budget particularly for studying the early time dynamics. Under mild conditions on the potential we prove that the equilibrium points corresponding to the non-negative local minima for $V(ϕ)$ are asymptotically stable.…
In this paper we study the effects of quantum scalar field vacuum fluctuations on scalar test particles in an analog model for the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker spatially flat geometry. In this scenario, the cases with one and two perfectly reflecting plane boundaries are considered as well the case without boundary. We find that the particles can undergo Brownian motion with a nonzero mean squared velocity induced by the quantum vacuum fluctuations due to the time dependent background and the presence of the boundaries. Typical singularities which appears due to the presence of the boundaries in…
