We consider the BPS dyonic instantons in the 5-dim supersymmetric Yang-Mills Chern-Simons theories. Its field theoretic structures and the moduli space dynamics in term of the ADHM data have been explored in detail. We find that the field theoretic Chern-Simons term leads to an effective magnetic field on instanton moduli space.
We study dyonic instantons in (4+1) dimensional Yang-Mills theory. Especially we consider the most general two instanton solution given by the Jackiw-Nohl-Rebbi ansatz and find its dyonic version. By exploring the zeros of the Higgs field, we rederive the porism structure of triangles in this solution and also find the magnetic monopole string loop. This leads to the identification of dyonic instanton with the supertube inserted between D4 branes.
The static Yang-Mills-Higgs dyonic instanton is shown to have a non-vanishing, but anti-self-dual, angular momentum 2-form with skew eigenvalues equal to the electric charge; for large charge the angular momentum causes the instanton to expand into a hyper-spherical shell. A class of exact multi dyonic instantons is then found and then generalized to a new class of 1/4 supersymmetric, non-singular, stationary, exact solutions of the ten-dimensional supergravity/Yang-Mills theory. These self-gravitating dyonic instantons yield new heterotic string solitons, to leading order in the inverse strin…
We study the one-instanton sector of 5d U(N) maximal SYM theory. By using the moduli space approximation we obtain all the 1/4-BPS bound states of one dyonic instanton when a vev is given to one of the SYM scalar fields that breaks U(N) maximally. We compute the corresponding 1/4-BPS index and partition function and find agreement with arXiv:1110.2175.
We explore the low energy dynamics of charge two instantons and dyonic instantons in SU(2) 5-dimensional Yang-Mills. We make use of the moduli space approximation and first calculate the moduli space metric for two instantons. For dyonic instantons the effective action of the moduli space approximation also includes a potential term which we calculate. Using the ADHM construction we are able to understand some aspects of the topology and structure of the moduli space. We find that instantons undergo right angled scattering after a head on collision and we are able to give an analytic descripti…
We study Higgs field configurations of dyonic instantons in spontaneously broken (4+1)-dimensional Yang-Mills theory. The adjoint scalar field solutions to the covariant Laplace equation in the ADHM instanton background are constructed in general noncanonical basis, and they are used to study explicitly the Higgs field configurations of dyonic instantons when the gauge fields are taken by Jackiw-Nohl-Rebbi instanton solutions. For these solutions corresponding to small instanton number we then consider in some detail the zero locus of the Higgs field, which describes the cross section of super…
This paper contains the results of our investigations of BPS instantons and of our work on N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories. The BPS instantons we study appear in type II string theory compactifications on Calabi-Yau threefolds. In the corresponding four-dimensional effective supergravity actions the BPS instantons arise as finite action solutions to the Euclidean equations of motion. For N=2 supersymmetric gauge theories we construct general Lagrangians involving gauge groups with (non-abelian) electric and magnetic (dyonic) charges. In this work a coupling to hypermultiplets is included.
We show that there exist finite energy, non-singular instanton solutions for five-dimensional theories with broken gauge symmetry. The soliton is supported against collapse by a non-zero electric charge. The low-energy dynamics of these solutions is described by motion on the ADHM moduli space with potential.
We explore the correspondence between Yang-Mills instantons and algebraic curves. The curve is defined by Higgs zero locus of dyonic instantons in 1+4 dimensional Yang-Mills-Higgs theory, and it is identified in string theory with the cross-section of supertubes connecting parallel D4-branes. To present evidence for the identification, we show that with total charges fixed, the supertube angular momentum computed from the Higgs zero locus is maximized when the locus is circular, which has been proven for the cross-section of the supertubes. This leads to a consistent dictionary between the cha…
We introduce a calculus of the Lie algebra valued functions present in Tseytlin's proposal for the nonabelian DBI action, and apply it to show that the recently found dyonic instanton is a solution of the full nonabelian DBI action. The geometry of this solution exhibits a new effect of ``blowing-up'' of the brane, which was not present in the case of the brane realisation of monopoles. We interpret this solution as the superposition of the D0 brane and fundamental string F1 which connects two separated D4 branes. Both F1 and D0 are delocalised in the ``blown-up'' region between two separated …
We systematically construct and study smooth supersymmetric solutions in 5 dimensional N=1 Yang-Mills-Einstein supergravity. Our solution is based on the ADHM construction of (dyonic) multi-instantons in Yang-Mills theory, which extends to the gravity-coupled system. In a simple supergravity model obtained from N=2 theory, our solutions are regular ring-like configurations, which can also be interpreted as supertubes. By studying the SU(2) 2-instanton example in detail, we find that angular momentum is maximized, with fixed electric charge, for circular rings. This feature is qualitatively sam…
We discuss the baryon in the holographic QCD framework and focus on the role of the bifundamental scalar field, realizing chiral symmetry breaking. We suggest the interpretation of a baryon as a dyonic instanton within the Atiyah-Manton-like approach for the flavor gauge group in the peculiar cylindrical ansatz in five-dimensional theory. Our approach provides the new mechanism of the stabilization of the baryon size.
We discuss the description of baryon as the dyonic instanton in holographic QCD. The solution generalizes the Skyrmion taking into account the infinite tower of vector and axial mesons as well as the chiral condensate. We construct the solution with unit baryon charge and study the dependence of its mass on the chiral condensate. The elegant explanation of the Ioffe's formula has been found and we speculate on the relation between physical scales of the chiral and conformal symmetry breaking.
Heterotic strings on $R^6 \times K3$ generically appear to undergo some interesting new phase transition at that value of the string coupling for which the one of the six-dimensional gauge field kinetic energies changes sign. An exception is the $E_8 \times E_8$ string with equal instanton numbers in the two $E_8$'s, which admits a heterotic/heterotic self-duality. In this paper, we generalize the dyonic string solution of the six-dimensional heterotic string to include non-trivial gauge field configurations corresponding to self-dual Yang-Mills instantons in the four transverse dimensions. We…
To a domain wall or string object, Noether charge and topological spatial objects can be attracted, forming a composite BPS (Bogomolny-Prasad-Sommerfield) object. We consider two field theories and derive a new BPS bound on composite linear solitons involving multiple charges. Among the BPS objects `supertubes' appear when the wall or string tension is canceled by the bound energy, and could take an arbitrary closed curve. In our theories, supertubes manifest as Chern-Simons solitons, dyonic instantons, charged semi-local vortices, and dyonic instantons on vortex flux sheet.
Dyonic non-Abelian local/semi-global vortex strings are studied in detail in supersymmetric/non-supersymmetric Yang-Mills-Higgs theories. While the BPS tension formula is known to be the same as that for the BPS dyonic instanton, we find that the non-BPS tension formula is approximated very well by the well-known tension formula of the BPS dyon. We show that this mysterious tension formula for the dyonic non-BPS vortex stings can be understood from the perspective of a low energy effective field theory. Furthermore, we propose an efficient method to obtain an effective theory of a single vorte…
We consider the low energy dynamics of charge two instantons on noncommutative $\mathbb{R}^{2}_{NC}\times\mathbb{R}^{2}_{NC}$ in U(2) 5-dimensional super-Yang-Mills, using the Manton approximation for slow-moving instantons to calculate the moduli space metric. By employing the ADHM construction, we are able to understand some aspects of the geometry and topology of the system. We also consider the effect of adding a potential to the moduli space, giving scattering results for noncommutative dyonic instantons.
In this note we discuss the gravimagnetization of the ${\cal N}=2$ SYM vacuum in the $Ω$-background. It is argued that the Seiberg-Witten prepotential is related to the vacuum density of the angular momentum in the Euclidean $R^4$ space. The possible role of the dyonic instantons as the microscopic angular momentum carriers which could yield the spontaneous vacuum gravimagnetization is conjectured. We interpret the dyonic instanton as a kind of the Euclidean bounce in $R^4$ similar to one responsible for the Schwinger pair creation. The induced angular momentum in $R^4$ is also briefly conside…
We consider the gauge dyonic string solution of the K3 compactified heterotic string theory in a four dimensional cosmological context. Since for this solution Green-Schwarz as well as Chern-Simons corrections have been taken into account it contains both world sheet and string loop corrections. The cosmological picture is obtained by rotating the world volume of the gauge dyonic string into two space like dimensions and compactifying those dimensions on a two torus. We compare the result with gauge neutral extreme and non-extreme cosmologies and find that the non-trivial Yang Mills background…
When instantons are put into the Higgs phase, vortices are attached to instantons. We construct such composite solitons as 1/4 BPS states in five-dimensional supersymmetric U(Nc) gauge theory with Nf(>=Nc) fundamental hypermultiplets. We solve the hypermultiplet BPS equation and show that all 1/4 BPS solutions are generated by an Nc x Nf matrix which is holomorphic in two complex variables, assuming the vector multiplet BPS equation does not give additional moduli. We determine the total moduli space formed by topological sectors patched together and work out the multi-instanton solution insid…
Baryons in holographic QCD correspond to topological solitons in the bulk. The most prominent example is the Sakai-Sugimoto model, where the bulk soliton in the five-dimensional spacetime of AdS-type can be approximated by the flat space self-dual Yang-Mills instanton with a small size. Recently, the validity of this approximation has been verified by comparison with the numerical field theory solution. However, multi-solitons and solitons with finite density are currently beyond numerical field theory computations. Various approximations have been applied to investigate these important issues…
We find and explore a class of dyonic instanton solutions which can be identified as the supertubes connecting two D4 branes. They correspond to a single monopole string and a pair of monopole antimonopole strings from the worldvolume view point of D4 branes.
We consider 5-dimensional Einstein-dilaton gravity with antisymmetric forms. Assuming staticity and a restriction on the dilaton coupling parameters, we derive 4-dimensional sigma-model with a target space $SL(2,R)/SO(1,1)\times SL(2,R)/SO(1,1)$. On this basis, using the symmetries of the target space, we develop a solution generating technique and employ it to construct new asymptotically flat and non-flat dyonic black rings solutions. The solutions are analyzed and the basic physical quantities are calculated.
Dyonic classical solutions of Yang-Mills theory are considered and the complete set of fermionic zero modes of these solutions are studied. Representing the QCD vacuum as a gas of dyons, one obtains chiral symmetry breaking due to zero modes similarly to the case of instantonic vacuum.
Starting with intersecting M2-branes in M-theory, the IIA supertube can be found by compactification with a boost to the speed of light in the compact dimension. A similar procedure applied to Donaldson-Uhlenbeck-Yau instantons on $\bC^3$, viewed as intersecting membranes of 7D supersymmetric Yang-Mills (SYM) theory, yields (for finite boost) a new set of 1/4 BPS equations for 6D SYM-Higgs theory, and (for infinite boost) a generalization of the dyonic instanton equations of 5D SYM-Higgs theory, solutions of which are interpreted as Yang-Mills supertubes and realized as configurations of IIB s…
In five dimensions, we consider a model described by the Einstein gravity with a source given by a scalar field and various Abelian gauge fields with dilatonic-like couplings. For this model, we are able to construct two dyonic black holes whose three-dimensional horizons are modeled by two nontrivial homogeneous Thurston's geometries. The dyonic solutions are of Lifshitz type with an arbitrary value of the dynamical exponent. In fact, the first gauge field ensures the anisotropy asymptotic while the remaining Abelian fields sustain the electric and magnetic charges. Using the Hamiltonian form…
A class of strongly interacting 2+1 dimensional conformal field theories in a transverse magnetic field can be studied using the AdS/CFT duality. We compute zero momentum hydrodynamic response functions of maximally supersymmetric 2+1 dimensional SU(N) Yang-Mills theory at the conformal fixed point, in the large N limit. With background magnetic field B and electric charge density rho, the Hall conductivity is found to be rho/B. The result, anticipated on kinematic grounds in field theory, is obtained from perturbations of a four dimensional AdS black hole with both electric and magnetic charg…
We study three-dimensional Yang-Mills-Higgs theories with and without a Chern-Simons interaction. We find that these theories admit a rich spectrum of vortex solitons carrying both a topological charge and a global flavour charge. We further derive a low-energy description of the vortex dynamics from a gauged linear sigma model on the vortex worldline.
We construct back-reacted asymptotically AdS_4 backgrounds with both electric and magnetic charge, at finite temperature and chemical potential. The system consists of a condensed bulk Dirac field hovering over a charged black brane. We give a detailed microscopic treatment of the bulk fermions, from which we derive the usual fluid approximations describing the condensate. In the context of holography, such a gravitational solution is dual to a (2+1)-dimensional CFT with a U(1) current, at finite density and strong coupling, subjected to a transverse magnetic field.
In this paper, according to CA duality, we study the complexity growth of dyonic RN-type black holes with quartic field strength corrections ($F^4$ corrections) to the matter action in general $D\geq4$-dimensions and find the behavior of action growth, similar to the case of the normal RN black holes, is different between electric and magnetic black holes which is unexpected since violates the electromagnetic duality. For restoring this duality, we add the Maxwell boundary term (at order 3-derivative) to the action and discuss the outcomes of the addition. Also, we have used another method tha…
We construct effective hydrodynamics for composite particles in (2+1) dimensions carrying a magnetic flux by employing a holographic approach. The hydrodynamics is obtained by perturbation of the dyonic black brane solutions in the derivative expansion. We introduce a consistent way to avoid mixing of different orders in the expansion. Thanks to this method, it is possible to take the strong external magnetic field limit in the dual field theory. To compare our result with those for a composite particle system, we study several cases that correspond to special solutions of Einstein's equation …
We consider the problem of coupling a dyonic p-brane in d = 2p+4 space-time dimensions to a prescribed (p+2)-form field strength. This is particularly subtle when p is odd. For the case p = 1, we explicitly construct a coupling functional, which is a sum of two terms: one which is linear in the prescribed field strength, and one which describes the coupling of the brane to its self-field and takes the form of a Wess-Zumino term depending only on the embedding of the brane world-volume into space-time. We then show that this functional is well-defined only modulo a certain anomaly, related to t…
We consider a six-dimensional solitonic string solution described by a conformal chiral null model with non-trivial $N=4$ superconformal transverse part. It can be interpreted as a five-dimensional dyonic solitonic string wound around a compact fifth dimension. The conformal model is regular with the short-distance (`throat') region equivalent to a WZW theory. At distances larger than the compactification scale the solitonic string reduces to a dyonic static spherically-symmetric black hole of toroidally compactified heterotic string. The new four-dimensional solution is parameterised by five …
Recently, we have shown that non-selfdual self-gravitating dyonic fields with magnetic mass generalize the Dirac monopole. The unique topological index, which characterizes the field, is a four dimensional analogue of the famous monopole configuration. An unexpected result of this analysis is that the electric parameter can only take certain discrete values as a consequence of applying the path integral approach to quantize the magnetic flux. Here, we show how this result can be generalized to higher dimensions, considering a special type of inhomogeneous geometries. Our results apply to a vas…
In the limit of small velocities, the dynamics of half-BPS Yang-Mills-Higgs solitons can be described by the geodesic approximation. Recently, it has been shown that quarter-BPS states require the addition of a potential term to this approximation. We explain the logic behind this modification for a larger class of models and then analyse in detail the dynamics of two five-dimensional dyonic instantons, using both analytical and numerical techniques. Nonzero-modes are shown to play a crucial role in the analysis of these systems, and we explain how these modes lead to qualitatively new types o…
We show that D/2--form gauge fields in D even dimensions can get a mass with both electric and magnetic contributions when coupled to conformal field--strengths whose gauge potentials is are \frac {D-2}{2}- forms. Denoting by e^I_Łand m^{IŁ} the electric and magnetic couplings, gauge invariance requires: e^I_Łm^{JŁ}\mp e^J_Łm^{IŁ}=0, where I,Ł= 1... m denote the species of gauge potentials of degree D/2 and gauge fields of degree D/2-1, respectively. The minus and plus signs refer to the two different cases D=4n and D=4n+2 respectively and the given constraints are respectively {\rm {Sp}}(2m) …
Conformal field theories corresponding to two-dimensional electrically charged black holes and to two-dimensional anti-de Sitter space with a covariantly constant electric field are simply constructed as $SL(2,R)/Z$ WZW coset models. The two-dimensional electrically charged black holes are related by Kaluza-Klein reduction to the 2+1-dimensional rotating black hole of Banados, Teitelboim and Zanelli, and our construction is correspondingly related to its realization as a WZW model. Four-dimensional spacetime solutions are obtained by tensoring these two-dimensional theories with $SU(2)/Z(m)$ c…
We clarify the higher-dimensional origin of a class of dyonic gaugings of $D=4$ ${\cal N}=8$ supergravity recently discovered, when the gauge group is chosen to be ISO(7). This dyonically-gauged maximal supergravity arises from consistent truncation of massive IIA supergravity on $S^6$, and its magnetic coupling constant descends directly from the Romans mass. The critical points of the supergravity uplift to new AdS$_4$ massive type IIA vacua. We identify the corresponding CFT$_3$ duals as super-Chern-Simons-matter theories with simple gauge group SU$(N)$, with level $k$ given by the Romans m…
We present extremal stationary solutions that generalize the Israel-Wilson-Perjes class for the d+3-dimensional low-energy limit of heterotic string theory with n >= d+1 U(1) gauge fields compactified on a d-torus. A rotating axisymmetric dyonic solution is obtained using the matrix Ernst potential formulation and expressed in terms of a single d+1 X d+1-matrix harmonic function. By studying the asymptotic behaviour of the field configurations we define the physical charges of the field system. The extremality condition makes the charges to saturate the Bogomol'nyi-Prasad-Sommerfield (BPS) bou…
We investigate the stability of four-dimensional dyonic soliton and black hole solutions of ${\mathfrak {su}}(2)$ Einstein-Yang-Mills theory in anti-de Sitter space. We prove that, in a neighbourhood of the embedded trivial (Schwarzschild-)anti-de Sitter solution, there exist non-trivial dyonic soliton and black hole solutions of the field equations which are stable under linear, spherically symmetric, perturbations of the metric and non-Abelian gauge field.
We derive new bounds on higher-dimension operator coefficients in four-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell theory. Positivity of classically-generated corrections to the Wald entropy of thermodynamically stable, rotating dyonic black holes implies a multiparameter family of field basis invariant inequalities that exhibit electromagnetic duality and are satisfied by examples from field and string theory. These bounds imply that effective operators modify the extremality condition of large black holes so as to permit their decay to smaller ones, thus satisfying the weak gravity conjecture.
We consider the self-dual Yang-Mills equations in seven dimensions. Modifying the t'Hooft construction of instantons in $d=4$, we find $N$-instanton $7d$ solutions which depend on $8N$ effective parameters and are $E_{6}$-invariant.
We consider the D-dimensional massive dilaton gravity coupled to Maxwell and antisymmetric tensor fields (EMATD). We derive the full separability of this theory in static case. This discloses the core structure of the theory and yields the simple procedure of how to generate integrability classes. As an example we take a certain new class, obtain the two-parametric families of dyonic solutions. It turns out that at some conditions they tend to the D-dimensional dyonic Reissner-Nordström-deSitter solutions but with ``renormalized'' dyonic charge plus a small logarithmic correction. The latter h…
We investigate Yang-Mills instantons on a 7-dimensional manifold of G_2 holonomy. By proposing a spherically symmetric ansatz for the Yang-Mills connection, we have ordinary differential equations as the reduced instanton equation, and give some explicit and numerical solutions.
In this letter, we study the instanton moduli space of the eight-dimensional solutions of the self-duality equation $F\wedge F= \ast F\wedge F$. Using the known ADHM-construction of such instantons, we compute the dimension of the space of solutions to this construction. We find a general $N$-instanton solution of the 't Hooft type which depends on $8N+1$ free parameters and investigate the cases $N=2$ and $N=3$ in detail.
We construct dyonic states in 2+1-dimensional lattice Z_N-Higgs models, i.e., states which are both, electrically and magnetically charged. The associated Hilbert spaces carry charged representations of the observable algebra, the global transfer matrix and a unitary implementation of the group of spatial lattice translations. We prove that for coinciding total charges these representations are dynamically equivalent and we construct a local intertwiner connection depending on a path in the space of charge distributions. The holonomy of this connection is given by Z_N-valued phases. This will …
We analyze the vector multiplet prepotential of d=4, N=2 type IIA compactifications. We find that the worldsheet instanton corrections have a natural interpretation as one-loop corrections in five dimensions, with the extra dimension being compactified on a circle of radius $g_{s}\ell_{s}$. We argue that the relation between spacetime and worldsheet instantons is natural from this point of view. We also discuss the map between the type IIA worldsheet instantons and the spacetime instantons in the heterotic dual.
Semiclassical instanton solutions in the 3D SU(2) Georgi-Glashow model are transformed into the Weyl gauge. This illustrates the tunneling interpretation of these instantons and provides a smooth regularization of the singular unitary gauge. The 3D Georgi-Glashow model has both instanton and sphaleron solutions, in contrast to 3D Yang-Mills theory which has neither, and 4D Yang-Mills theory which has instantons but no sphaleron, and 4D electroweak theory which has a sphaleron but no instantons. We also discuss the spectral flow picture of fundamental fermions in a Georgi-Glashow instanton back…
We construct a supersymmetric version of instanton operators in five-dimensional Yang-Mills theories. This is possible by considering a five-dimensional generalization of the familiar four-dimensional topologically twisted theory, where the gauge configurations corresponding to instanton operators are supersymmetric.
We construct black holes with a Ricci flat horizon in Einstein--Yang-Mills theory with a negative cosmological constant, which approach asymptotically an AdS$_d$ spacetime background (with $d\geq 4$). These solutions are isotropic, $i.e.$ all space directions in a hypersurface of constant radial and time coordinates are equivalent, and possess both electric and magnetic fields. We find that the basic properties of the non-Abelian solutions are similar to those of the dyonic isotropic branes in Einstein-Maxwell theory (which, however, exist in even spacetime dimensions only). These black branes…
We construct octonionic multi-instantons for the eight and seven dimensional Yang-Mills theory. Extended soliton solutions to the low-energy heterotic field theory equations of motion are constructed from these octonionic multi-instantons. The solitons describe a string in ten-dimensional Minkowski space, and preserve one and two of the sixteen space-time supersymmetries correspondingly.
We consider a gauge theory in which a nonassociative Moufang loop takes the place of a structure group. We construct Belavin-Polyakov-Schwartz-Tyupkin (BPST) and t'Hooft like instanton solutions of the gauge theory in seven and eight dimensions.
BPS instantons are discussed in Lifshitz-type anisotropic field theories. We consider generalizations of the sigma model/Yang-Mills instantons in renormalizable higher dimensional models with the classical Lifshitz scaling invariance. In each model, BPS instanton equation takes the form of the gradient flow equations for "the superpotential" defining "the detailed balance condition". The anisotropic Weyl rescaling and the coset space dimensional reduction are used to map rotationally symmetric instantons to vortices in two-dimensional anisotropic systems on the hyperbolic plane. As examples, w…
We summarize the results for four-dimensional Bogomol'nyi-Prasad- Sommerfield (BPS) saturated dyonic black hole solutions arising in the Kaluza-Klein sector and the three-form field sector of the eleven-dimensional supergravity on a seven-torus. These black hole solutions break $3\over 4$ of $N=8$ supersymmetry, fill out the multipletes of $U$-duality group, and the two classes of solutions are related to each other by a discrete symmetry transformation in $E_7$. Using the field redefinitions of the corresponding effective actions, we present these solutions in terms of fields describing class…
Using the Sen's entropy function formalism, we compute the entropy for the extremal dyonic black hole solutions of theories in the presence of dilaton field coupled to the field strength and a dilaton potential. We solve the attractor equations analytically and determine the near horizon metric, the value of the scalar fields and the electric field on the horizon, and consequently the entropy of these black holes. The attractor mechanism plays a very important role for these systems, and after studying the simplest systems involving dilaton fields, we propose a general ansatz for the value of …
Here we study the global existence of `hairy' dyonic black hole and dyon solutions to four dimensional, anti-de Sitter Einstein-Yang-Mills theories for a general simply-connected and semisimple gauge group $G$, for so-called topologically symmetric systems, concentrating here on the regular case. We generalise here cases in the literature which considered purely magnetic spherically symmetric solutions for a general gauge group and topological dyonic solutions for $\mathfrak{su}(N)$. We are able to establish the global existence of non-trivial solutions to all such systems, both near existing …
It is well known that in two spatial dimensions the fractional quantum Hall effect (FQHE) deals with point-like anyons that carry fractional electric charge and statistics. Moreover, in presence of a SO(3) order parameter, point-like skyrmions emerge and play a central role in the corresponding quantum Hall ferromagnetic phase. In this work, we show that in six spatial dimensions, the FQHE for extended objects shares very similar features with its two-dimensional counterpart. In the higher-dimensional case, the electromagnetic and hydrodynamical one-form gauge fields are replaced by three-form…
