It is known that if neutrino is a Dirac fermion with magnetic moment, then ν_L -> ν_R -> ν_L transition of supernova neutrinos may occur. The first stage of such transition is due to the neutrino spin flip inside the hot dense supernova core, while the second one - due to the neutrino spin precession in the galactic magnetic field on the way from the supernova to terrestrial detectors. This can result in the detection of 60-200 MeV neutrinos simultaneously with the "normal" supernova neutrino signal, which would be a smoking gun for the Dirac neutrino magnetic moment, μ. We argue that in case of a nearby supernova explosion (~10 kpc away from the Earth) one may observe such high-energy events in Super-Kamiokande if μ\gtrsim 10^{-13} μ_B, and in a Mt-scale detector if μ\gtrsim 0.5*10^{-13} μ_B. Such an observation by itself, however, may be not sufficient to determine the value of the magnetic moment, because of the ignorance of the interstellar magnetic field. We point out that if in addition a deficit of the neutronization burst neutrinos is established, it would be possible to extract the value of the magnetic moment from observations. We also briefly discuss a possible Majorana magnetic moment signature due to ν_e -> \barν_{μ,τ} flip inside the supernova core.
The signatures of sterile neutrinos in the supernova neutrino signal in megaton water Cerenkov detectors are studied. Time dependent modulation of the neutrino signal emerging from the sharp changes in the oscillation probability due to shock waves is shown to be a smoking gun for the existence of sterile neutrinos. These modulations and indeed the entire neutrino oscillation signal is found to be different for the case with just three active neutrinos and the cases where there are additional sterile species mixed with the active neutrinos. The effect of turbulence is taken into account and it…
The undetermined neutrino mass hierarchy may leave an observable imprint on the neutrino fluxes from a core-collapse supernova (SN). The interpretation of the observables, however, is subject to the uncertain SN models and the flavor conversion mechanism of neutrinos in a SN. We attempt to propose a qualitative interpretation of the expected neutrino events at terrestrial detectors, focusing on the accretion phase of the neutrino burst. The flavor conversions due to neutrino self-interaction, the MSW effect, and the Earth regeneration effect are incorporated in the calculation. It leads to sev…
We calculate the TeV-PeV neutrino fluxes of gamma-ray bursts associated with supernovae, based on the observed association between GRB 030329 and supernova SN 2003dh. The neutrino spectral flux distributions can test for possible delays between the supernova and the gamma-ray burst events down to much shorter timescales than what can be resolved with photons. As an illustrative example, we calculate the probability of neutrino induced muon and electron cascade events in a km scale under-ice detector at the South Pole, from the GRB 030329. Our calculations demonstrate that km scale neutrino tel…
Nearby supernova explosions may cause geological isotope anomalies via the direct deposition of debris or by cosmic-ray spallation in the earth's atmosphere. We estimate the mass of material deposited terrestrially by these two mechanisms, showing the dependence on the supernova distance. A number of radioactive isotopes are identified as possible diagnostic tools, such as Be-10, Al-26, Cl-36, Mn-53, Fe-60, and Ni-59, as well as the longer-lived I-129, Sm-146, and Pu-244. We discuss whether the 35 and 60 kyr-old Be-10 anomalies observed in the Vostok antarctic ice cores could be due to superno…
We consider the mixing of muon and tau neutrinos with sterile fermion fields propagating in extra dimensions in the context of core collapse supernova physics, extending the analysis of the electron neutrino case done in a previous work. We show that the potentially dramatic modifications to the supernova evolution are prevented by a mechanism of feedback, so that no severe bounds on the parameters of the extra dimensions need to be imposed. Nevertheless, the supernova core evolution is significantly modified. We discuss the consequences on the delayed explosion mechanism and the compatibility…
Signatures of neutrino and antineutrino signals from stellar collapse in heavy water detectors are contrasted with those in water detectors. The effects of mixing, especially due to the highly dense matter in the supernova core, are studied. The mixing parameters used are those sets allowed by current understanding of available neutrino data: from solar, atmospheric and laboratory neutrino experiments. Signals at a heavy water detector, especially the dominant charged current reactions on deuteron, are very sensitive to some of these sets of allowed mixing parameters. Theoretical uncertainties…
Impulsive supernova feedback and non-standard dark matter models, such as self-interacting dark matter (SIDM), are the two main contenders for the role of the dominant core formation mechanism at the dwarf galaxy scale. Here we show that the impulsive supernova cycles that follow episodes of bursty star formation leave distinct features in the distribution function of stars: groups of stars with similar ages and metallicities develop overdense shells in phase space. If cores are formed through supernova feedback, we predict the presence of such features in star-forming dwarf galaxies with core…
The neutrino burst from a galactic supernova can help determine the neutrino mass hierarchy and $θ_{13}$, and provide crucial information about supernova astrophysics. Here we review our current understanding of the neutrino burst, flavor conversions of these neutrinos, and model independent signatures of various neutrino mixing scenarios.
We discuss the flavor conversion of neutrinos from core collapse supernovae that have oxygen-neon-magnesium (ONeMg) cores. Using the numerically calculated evolution of the star up to 650 ms post bounce, we find that, for the normal mass hierarchy, the electron neutrino flux in a detector shows signatures of two typical features of an ONeMg-core supernova: a sharp step in the density profile at the base of the He shell and a faster shock wave propagation compared to iron core supernovae. Before the shock hits the density step (t ~ 150 ms), the survival probability of electron neutrinos is abou…
Convection that develops behind the shock front during the first second of a core-collapse supernova explosion is believed to play a crucial role in the explosion mechanism. We demonstrate that the resulting turbulent density fluctuations may be directly observable in the neutrino signal starting at t>~ 3-4 s after the onset of the explosion. The effect comes from the modulation of the MSW flavor transformations by the turbulent density fluctuations. We derive a simple and general criterion for neutrino flavor depolarization in a Kolmogorov-type turbulence and apply it to the turbulence seen i…
The neutrino helicity-flip process under the conditions of the supernova core is reinvestigated. Instead of the uniform ball model for the SN core used in previous analyses, realistic models for radial distributions and time evolution of physical parameters in the SN core are considered. A new upper bound on the Dirac neutrino magnetic moment is obtained from the limit on the supernova core luminosity for nu_R emission.
The Earth matter effects on supernova (SN) neutrinos can be identified at a single detector through peaks in the Fourier transform of their ``inverse energy'' spectrum. The positions of these peaks are independent of the SN models and therefore the peaks can be used as a robust signature of the Earth matter effects, which in turn can distinguish between different neutrino mixing scenarios. Whereas only one genuine peak is observable when the neutrinos traverse only the Earth mantle, traversing also the core gives rise to multiple peaks. We calculate the strengths and positions of these peaks a…
The set of transition probabilities for a single neutrino emitted from a point source after passage through a turbulent supernova density profile have been found to be random variates drawn from parent distributions whose properties depend upon the stage of the explosion, the neutrino energy and mixing parameters, the observed channel, and the properties of the turbulence such as the amplitude C*. In this paper we examine the consequences of the recently measured mixing angle θ_13 upon the neutrino flavor transformation in supernova when passing through turbulence. We find the measurements of …

We demonstrate that the neutrino-driven outflows inside exploding core-collapse supernovae possess a special property of near-criticality, that is, they are on the edge of forming termination shocks. We derive a novel criterion for the formation of the shock, in terms of the fundamental parameters of the problem: the neutrino luminosity and energy as well as the properties of the protoneutron star. The criterion provides a unified description of the available numerical results and motivates future simulations. The property of near-criticality makes the neutrino signatures of the termination sh…
A suite of detectors around the world is poised to measure the flavor-energy-time evolution of the ten-second burst of neutrinos from a core-collapse supernova occurring in the Milky Way or nearby. Next-generation detectors to be built in the next decade will have enhanced flavor sensitivity and statistics. Not only will the observation of this burst allow us to peer inside the dense matter of the extreme event and learn about the collapse processes and the birth of the remnant, but the neutrinos will bring information about neutrino properties themselves. This review surveys some of the physi…
The neutrino chirality-flip process under the conditions of the supernova core is investigated in detail with the plasma polarization effects in the photon propagator taken into account, in a more consistent way than in earlier publications. It is shown in part that the contribution of the proton fraction of plasma is essential. New upper bounds on the neutrino magnetic moment are obtained: mu_nu < (0.5 - 1.1) 10^{-12} mu_B from the limit on the supernova core luminosity for nu_R emission, and mu_nu < (0.4 - 0.6) 10^{-12} mu_B from the limit on the averaged time of the neutrino spin-flip. The …
Heavy sterile neutrinos with masses ${\mathcal O}(100)$ MeV mixing with active neutrinos can be produced in the core of a collapsing supernova (SN). In order to avoid an excessive energy loss, shortening the observed duration of the SN 1987A neutrino burst, we show that the active-sterile neutrino mixing angle should satisfy $\sin^2 θ\lesssim 5 \times 10^{-7}$. For a mixing with tau flavour, this bound is much stronger than the ones from laboratory searches. Moreover, we show that in the viable parameter space the decay of such "heavy" sterile neutrinos in the SN envelope would lead to a very …
We calculate the expected galactic supernova neutrino signal at large next-generation underground detectors. At different epochs after the explosion, the primary fluxes can be quite different. For these primary neutrino fluxes, spectral splits induced by collective neutrino flavor transformations can arise for either mass hierarchy in both neutrino and antineutrino channels. We classify flux models according to the nature and number of these splits, and calculate the observable electron-neutrino and electron-antineutrino spectra at Earth, taking into account subsequent matter effects. We find …
Using moment equations we analyze collective flavor transformation of supernova neutrinos. We study the convergence of moment equations and find that numerical results using a few moment converge quite fast. We study effects of emission angle distribution of neutrinos on neutrino sphere. We study scaling law of the amplitude of neutrino self-interaction Hamiltonian and find that it depends on model of emission angle distribution of neutrinos. Dependence of neutrino oscillation on different models of emission angle distribution is studied.
The neutrino chirality-flip process under the conditions of the supernova core is investigated in detail with the plasma polarization effects in the photon propagator taken into account in a more complete form than in earlier publications. It is shown in part that the contribution of the proton fraction of plasma is essential. New upper bounds on the neutrino magnetic moment are obtained: mu_nu < (0.5 - 1.1) 10^{-12} mu_B from the limit on the supernova core luminosity for nu_R emission, and mu_nu < (0.4 - 0.6) 10^{-12} mu_B from the limit on the averaged time of the left-handed neutrino washi…
We consider axions coupled to nucleons and photons only through the nucleon electric-dipole moment (EDM) portal. This coupling is a model-independent feature of QCD axions, which solve the strong CP problem, and might arise as well in more general axion-like particle setups. We revise the supernova (SN) axion emission induced by the nucleon EDM coupling and refine accordingly the SN 1987A bound. Furthermore, we calculate the axion flux from a future Galactic SN and show that it might produce a peculiar and potentially detectable gamma-ray signal in a large underground neutrino detector such as…
A few seconds after bounce in a core-collapse supernova, the shock wave passes the density region corresponding to resonant neutrino oscillations with the ``atmospheric'' neutrino mass difference. The transient violation of the adiabaticity condition manifests itself in an observable modulation of the neutrino signal from a future galactic supernova. In addition to the shock wave propagation effects that were previously studied, a reverse shock forms when the supersonically expanding neutrino-driven wind collides with the slower earlier supernova ejecta. This implies that for some period the n…
Core-collapse supernovae emit of order $10^{58}$ neutrinos and antineutrinos of all flavors over several seconds, with average energies of 10--25 MeV. In the Sudbury Neutrino Observatory (SNO), which begins operations this year, neutrinos and antineutrinos of all flavors can be detected by reactions which break up the deuteron. For a future Galactic supernova at a distance of 10 kpc, several hundred events will be observed in SNO. The $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$ neutrinos and antineutrinos are of particular interest, as a test of the supernova mechanism. In addition, it is possible to measure or limit the…
We calculate the response of a lead-based detector, such as the Helium and Lead Observatory (HALO) or its planned upgrade HALO-1kt to a galactic core-collapse supernova. We pay particular attention to the time dependence of the reaction rates. All reaction rates decrease as the neutrino luminosity exponentially drops during the cooling period but the ratio of one-neutron (1n) to two-neutron (2n) event rates in HALO is independent of this overall decrease. Nevertheless, we find that this ratio still changes with time due to the changing character of neutrino flavor transformations with the evol…
The $ν_μ$ and $ν_τ$ neutrinos (and their antiparticles) from a Galactic core-collapse supernova can be observed in a water-Čerenkov detector by the neutral-current excitation of $^{16}$O. The number of events expected is several times greater than from neutral-current scattering on electrons. The observation of this signal would be a strong test that these neutrinos are produced in core-collapse supernovae, and with the right characteristics. In this paper, this signal is used as the basis for a technique of neutrino mass determination from a future Galactic supernova. The masses of the $ν_μ$ …
The first full-scale three-dimensional (3D) core-collapse supernova (SN) simulations with sophisticated neutrino transport show pronounced effects of the standing accretion shock instability (SASI) for two high-mass progenitors (20 and 27 M_sun). In a low-mass progenitor (11.2 M_sun), large-scale convection is the dominant nonradial hydrodynamic instability in the postshock accretion layer. The SASI-associated modulation of the neutrino signal (80 Hz in our two examples) will be clearly detectable in IceCube or the future Hyper-Kamiokande detector, depending on progenitor properties, distance,…
In order to investigate the impact of collective neutrino oscillations (CNO) on the neutrino signal from a nearby supernova, we perform 3-flavor neutrino oscillation simulations employing the multiangle effect. The background hydrodynamic model is based on the neutrino hydrodynamic simulation of a 8.8 \Msun progenitor star. We find that CNO commences after some 100 ms post bounce. Before this, CNO is suppressed by matter-induced decoherence. In the inverted mass hierarchy, the spectrum of $\barν_e$ becomes softer after the onset of CNO. To evaluate the detectability of this modification, we de…
We derive a series of moment equations describing the motion and flavor transformation of neutrinos in supernova. We find a particular series of moments of neutrino density matrix in supernova. The emission angle distribution of neutrinos is described by this series of moments. We expand the equation of neutrinos using these moments and obtain moment equations. We find that these moments have very good property of convergence and the infinite series of equations can be truncated to equations with a small set of moments. Using a small set of moment equations the required computational power is …
We study the effect of Majorana transition magnetic moments on the flavor evolution of neutrinos and antineutrinos inside the core of Type-II supernova explosions. We find non-trivial collective oscillation effects relating neutrinos and antineutrinos of different flavors, even if one restricts the discussion to Majorana transition electromagnetic moment values that are not much larger than those expected from standard model interactions and nonzero neutrino Majorana masses. This appears to be, to the best of our knowledge, the only potentially observable phenomenon sensitive to such small val…
We perform general relativistic one-dimensional supernova (SN) simulations to identify observable signatures of enhanced axion emission from the pion-induced reaction $π^- + p \rightarrow n + a$ inside a newly born protoneutron star (PNS).We focus on the early evolution after the onset of the supernova explosion to predict the temporal and spectral features of the neutrino and axion emission during the first 10 s. Pions are included as explicit new degrees of freedom in hot and dense matter. Their thermal population and their role in axion production are both determined consistently to include…
The double conversion of the neutrino helicity $ν_L \to ν_R \to ν_L$ has been analyzed for supernova conditions, where the first stage is due to the interaction of the neutrino magnetic moment with plasma electrons and protons in the supernova core, and the second stage, due to the resonance spin flip of the neutrino in the magnetic field of the supernova envelope. It is shown that, in the presence of the neutrino magnetic moment in the range $10^{-13} μ_{\rm B} < μ_ν< 10^{-12} μ_{\rm B}$ and a magnetic field of $\sim 10^{13}$ G between the neutrinosphere and the shock-stagnation region, an ad…
We study electron-neutrino and electron-antineutrino signals from a supernova with strong magnetic field detected by a 100 kton liquid Ar detector. The change of neutrino flavors by resonant spin-flavor conversions, matter effects, and neutrino self-interactions are taken into account. Different neutrino signals, characterized by neutronization burst event and the total event numbers of electron-neutrinos and electron-antineutrinos, are expected with different neutrino oscillation parameters and neutrino magnetic moment. Observations of supernova neutrino signals by a 100 kton liquid Ar detect…
Predictions of the thermodynamic conditions for phase transitions at high baryon densities and large chemical potentials are currently uncertain and largely phenomenological. Neutrino observations of core-collapse supernovae can be used to constrain the situation. Recent simulations of stellar core collapse that include a description of quark matter predict a sharp burst of anti ν_e several hundred milliseconds after the prompt ν_e neutronization burst. We study the observational signatures of that anti ν_e burst at current neutrino detectors - IceCube and Super-Kamiokande. For a Galactic core…
The resonant transition effects MSW and NSFP for three flavour Majorana neutrinos in a supernova are considered, where the transition magnetic moments are likely to play a relevant role in neutrino physics. In this scenario, the deformed thermal neutrino distributions are obtained for different choices of the electron-tau mixing angle. Detailed predictions for the future large neutrino detectors are also given in terms of the ratio between the spectra of recoil electrons for deformed and undeformed spectra.
Future detection of a supernova neutrino burst by large underground detectors would give important information for the explosion mechanism of collapse-driven supernovae. We studied the statistical analysis for the future detection of a nearby supernova by using a numerical supernova model and realistic Monte-Carlo simulations of detection by the Super-Kamiokande detector. We mainly discuss the detectability of the signatures of the delayed explosion mechanism in the time evolution of the $\anue$ luminosity and spectrum. For a supernova at 10 kpc away from the Earth, we find that not only the s…
We show that the supernova neutrino signal in terrestrial detectors could give characteristic signatures as the shock propagates through the regions where matter-enhanced neutrino flavor transformation takes place. This effect could allow existing and proposed supernova neutrino detectors to provide new insights into the problem of shock re-generation and propagation. Alternatively, such observations could allow unique insights into the neutrino mass and mixing matrix.
The hypothetical massive dark photon ($γ'$) which has kinetic mixing with the SM photon can decay electromagnetically to $e^+e^-$ pairs if its mass $m$ exceeds $2m_e$ and otherwise into three SM photons. These decays yield cosmological and supernovae associated signatures. We briefly discuss these signatures, particularly in connection with the supernova SN1987A and delineate the extra constraints that may then arise on the mass and mixing parameter of the dark photon. In particular, we find that for dark photon mass $m_{γ'}$ in the 5-20 MeV range, arguments based on supernova 1987A observatio…
For neutrinos with a magnetic moment, we show that the collisions in a hot and dense plasma act as an efficient mechanism for the conversion of $ν_L$ into $ν_R$. The production rate for right-handed neutrinos is computed in terms of a resummed photon propagator which consistently incorporates the background effects. Assuming that the entire energy in a supernova collapse is not carried away by the $ν_R$, our results can be used to place an upper limit on the neutrino magnetic moment $μ_ν< (0.1-0.4)\times 10^{-11}μ_B$
The present solar and atmospheric neutrino data together with the LSND results and the presence of hot dark matter (HDM) suggest the existence of a sterile neutrino at the eV scale. We have reanalysed the effect of resonant {\sl sterile} neutrino conversions induced by neutrino magnetic moments in a type-II supernova. We analyse the implications of $ν_e-ν_s$ and $\barν_e-\barν_s$ ($ν_s$ denotes sterile neutrino) conversions for the supernova shock re-heating, the detected $\barν_e$ signal from SN1987A and the $r$-process nucleosynthesis hypothesis. Using reasonable magnetic field profiles we d…
We investigate resonant spin-flavor (RSF) conversions of supernova neutrinos which are induced by the interaction of neutrino magnetic moment and supernova magnetic fields. From the formulation which includes all three-flavor neutrinos and anti-neutrinos, we give a new crossing diagram that includes not only ordinary MSW resonance but also magnetically-induced RSF effect. With the diagram, it is found that four conversions occur in supernova, two are induced by the RSF effect and two by the pure MSW. We also numerically calculate neutrino conversions in supernova matter, using neutrino mixing …
We analyze the influence of neutrino helicity conversion, $ν_L \to ν_R$, on the neutrino flux from a supernova caused by the interaction of the Dirac neutrino magnetic moment with a magnetic field. We show that if the neutrino has a magnetic moment in the interval $10^{-13} \, μ_{\rm B} < μ_ν< 10^{-12} \, μ_{\rm B}$ and provided that a magnetic field of $\sim 10^{13} - 10^{14}$ G exists in the supernova envelope, a peculiar kind of time evolution of the neutrino signal from the supernova caused by the resonance transition $ν_L \to ν_R$ in the magnetic field of the envelope can appear. If a mag…
It is shown that the combined action of spin-flavor conversions of supernova neutrinos due to the interactions of their Majorana-type transition magnetic moments with the supernova magnetic fields and flavor conversions due to the mass mixing can lead to the transformation of ν_e born in the neutronization process into their antiparticles \barν_e. Such an effect would have a clear experimental signature and its observation would be a smoking gun evidence for the neutrino transition magnetic moments. It would also signify the leptonic mixing parameter |U_{e3}| in excess of 10^{-2}.
We investigate the neutrino helicity-flip process under supernova core conditions, where the left-handed neutrinos being produced can be converted into right-handed neutrinos sterile with respect to the weak interaction due to the interaction of magnetic moments with plasma electrons and protons. Instead of the uniform ball model for the SN core used in previous analyses, realistic models for radial distributions and time evolution of physical parameters in the supernova core are considered. We have obtained new upper limits on the Dirac neutrino magnetic moment averaged over flavours and time…
The neutrino chirality-flip process under the conditions of the supernova core is investigated in detail with the plasma polarization effects in the photon propagator taken into account. It is shown that the contribution of the proton fraction of plasma is essential. The best astrophysical upper bound on the neutrino magnetic moment …
Neutrino with magnetic moment can experience a chirality flip while scattering off charged particles. This effect may lead to important consequences for the dynamics and the neutrino signal of the core-collapse supernova. It is known that if neutrino is a Dirac fermion, then nu_L->nu_R transition induced by the chirality flip leads to the emission of sterile right-handed neutrinos. The typical energies of these neutrinos are rather high, E ~ (100-200)MeV. Neutrino spin precession in the magnetic field either inside the collapsing star or in the interstellar space may lead to the backward trans…
We study type II supernova signatures of neutrino mass generation via symmetry breaking at a scale in the range from keV to MeV. The scalar responsible for symmetry breaking can be thermalized in the supernova core and restore the symmetry. The neutrinos from scalar decays have about half the average energy of thermal neutrinos and are Bose-Einstein distributed. We find that, even without a detailed knowledge of the supernova parameters, a discovery is well within reach at Super-Kamiokande.
Recent theoretical work indicates that the neutrino radiation in core-collapse supernovae may be susceptible to flavor instabilities that set in far behind the shock, grow extremely rapidly, and have the potential to profoundly affect supernova dynamics and composition. Here we analyze the nonlinear collective oscillations that are prefigured by these instabilities. We demonstrate that a zero-crossing in $n_{ν_e} - n_{\barν_e}$ as a function of propagation angle is not sufficient to generate instability. Our analysis accounts for this fact and allows us to formulate complementary criteria. Usi…
The process of the two-step conversion of the neutrino helicity, $ν_L \to ν_R \to ν_L$, is analysed in the supernova conditions, where the first stage is realized due to the interaction of the neutrino magnetic moment with the plasma electrons and protons in the supernova core. The second stage is caused by the neutrino resonant spin-flip in a magnetic field of the supernova envelope. Given the neutrino magnetic moment within the interval $10^{-13} μ_{\rm B} < μ_ν< 10^{-12} μ_{\rm B}$, and with the existence of the magnetic field at the scale $\sim 10^{13}$ G between the neutrinosphere and the…
The high energy neutrino signature from proton-proton and photo-meson interactions in a supernova remnant shell ejected prior to a gamma-ray burst provides a test for the precursor supernova, or supranova, model of gamma-ray bursts. Protons in the supernova remnant shell, and photons entrapped from a supernova explosion or a pulsar wind from a fast-rotating neutron star remnant provide ample targets for protons escaping the internal shocks of the gamma-ray burst to interact and produce high energy neutrinos. We calculate the expected neutrino fluxes, which can be detected by current and future…
The supernova neutrino flavor evolution in the presence of the non-trivial neutrino magnetic moment and strong magnetic field is numerically derived using the two-flavor and single-angle approximation. The novel properties of collective neutrino oscillations are studied and distinct patterns of flavor and spin-flavor spectral splits are presented. Finally we also discuss how the neutrino magnetic moment affects the observable supernova neutrino energy spectra.

Neutrinos emitted from a supernova may undergo flavor conversions almost immediately above the core, with possible consequences for supernova dynamics and nucleosynthesis. However, the precise conditions for such fast conversions can be difficult to compute and require knowledge of the full angular distribution of the flavor-dependent neutrino fluxes, that is not available in typical supernova simulations. In this paper, we show that the overall flavor evolution is qualitatively similar to the growth of a so-called `zero mode', determined by the background matter and neutrino densities, which …
