We discuss the flavor conversion of neutrinos from core collapse supernovae that have oxygen-neon-magnesium (ONeMg) cores. Using the numerically calculated evolution of the star up to 650 ms post bounce, we find that, for the normal mass hierarchy, the electron neutrino flux in a detector shows signatures of two typical features of an ONeMg-core supernova: a sharp step in the density profile at the base of the He shell and a faster shock wave propagation compared to iron core supernovae. Before the shock hits the density step (t ~ 150 ms), the survival probability of electron neutrinos is about 0.68, in contrast to values of 0.32 or less for an iron core supernova. The passage of the shock through the step and its subsequent propagation cause a decrease of the survival probability and a decrease of the amplitude of oscillations in the Earth, reflecting the transition to a more adiabatic propagation inside the star. These changes affect the lower energy neutrinos first; they are faster and more sizable for larger theta_13. They are unique of ONeMg-core supernovae, and give the possibility to test the speed of the shock wave. The time modulation of the Earth effect and its negative sign at the neutronization peak are the most robust signatures in a detector.
We explore the adiabatic pulsational properties of massive white dwarf stars with hydrogen-rich envelopes and oxygen/neon and carbon/oxygen cores. To this end, we compute the cooling of massive white dwarf models for both core compositions taking into account the evolutionary history of the progenitor stars and the chemical evolution caused by time-dependent element diffusion. In particular, for the oxygen/neon models, we adopt the chemical profile resulting from repeated carbon-burning shell flashes expected in very massive white dwarf progenitors. For carbon/oxygen white dwarfs we consider t…
A thorough critical literature survey has been carried out for reliable measurements of oxygen and neon abundances of planetary nebulae (PNe) and HII regions. By contrasting the results of PNe and of HII regions, we aim to address the issues of the evolution of oxygen and neon in the interstellar medium (ISM) and in the late evolutionary phases of low- and intermediate-mass stars (LIMS), as well as the currently hotly disputed solar Ne/O abundance ratio. Through the comparisons, we find that neon abundance and Ne/O ratio increase with increasing oxygen abundance in both types of nebulae, with …
The interpretation of microlensing results towards the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) still remains controversial. White dwarfs have been proposed to explain these results and, hence, to contribute significantly to the mass budget of our Galaxy. However, several constraints on the role played by regular carbon-oxygen white dwarfs exist. Massivewhite dwarfs are thought to be made of a mixture of oxygen and neon. Correspondingly, their cooling rate is larger than those of typical carbon-oxygen white dwarfs and they fade to invisibility in short timescales. Consequently, they constitute a good cand…
Wavelengths and transition rates are given for E1 transitions between singlet S, P, D, and F states, between triplet S, P, and D states, and between triplet P and singlet S states in ions of astrophysical interest: helium-like carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, neon, silicon, and argon. All possible E1 transitions between states with J < 4 and n < 7 are considered. Energy levels and wave functions used in calculations of the transition rates are obtained from relativistic configuration-interaction calculations that include both Coulomb and Breit interactions.
Transition wavelengths and rates are given for E1, E2, M1, and M2 transitions between singlet and triplet S, P, D, and F states in heliumlike ions of astrophysical interest: carbon, nitrogen, oxygen, neon, silicon, and argon. All possible transitions between states with n <= 6 are considered. Wave functions and energies are calculated using the relativistic configuration-interaction (CI) method including both Coulomb and Breit interactions. For transitions to the ground state, the present theoretical wavelengths agree to five digits with precise measurements.
We report on first results of computing synthetic spectra from H/He-poor accretion disks in ultracompact LMXBs. We aim at the determination of the chemical composition of the very low-mass donor star, which is the core of a former C/O white dwarf. The abundance analysis allows to draw conclusions on gravitational settling in WDs which is an important process affecting cooling times and pulsational g-mode periods.
We present full stellar evolution and parametric models of the surface abundance evolution of O16, Ne22, Na23 and the magnesium isotopes in an extremely metal-poor intermediate mass star M_ZAMS=5M_sun, Z=0.0001. O16 and Ne22 are injected into the envelope by the third dredge-up following thermal pulses on the asymptotic giant branch. These species and the initially present Mg24 are depleted by hot bottom burning (HBB) during the interpulse phase. As a result, Na23, Mg25 and Mg26 are enhanced. If the HBB temperatures are sufficiently high for this process to deplete oxygen efficiently, Na23 is …
The disagreement between helioseismology and a recent downward revision of solar abundances has resulted in a controversy about the true neon abundance of the Sun and other stars. We investigated XMM-Newton and Chandra high-resolution X-ray spectra of weakly and moderately active stars (log L_x/L_bol = -5...-7) and determined their coronal Ne/O abundance ratio by using two linear combinations of strong emission lines as well as a global-fitting method. The sample stars show a correlation between their Ne/O ratio and stellar activity in the sense that stars with a higher activity level show a h…
We find resolved interstellar O K, Ne K, and Fe L absorption spectra in the Chandra Low Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer spectrum of the low mass X-ray binary X0614+091. We measure the column densities in O and Ne, and find direct spectroscopic constraints on the chemical state of the interstellar O. These measurements probably probe a low-density line of sight through the Galaxy and we discuss the results in the context of our knowledge of the properties of interstellar matter in regions between the spiral arms.
We present a comprehensive investigation of the two broad absorption features observed in the X-ray spectrum of the neutron star 1E1207.4-5209 based on a recent analysis of the 260 ksec XMM-Newton data by Mori et al. 2005. Expanding on our earlier work (Hailey & Mori 2002) we have examined all previously proposed atmospheric models for 1E1207.4-5209. Using our atomic code, which rapidly solves Schrodinger's equation for arbitrary ion in strong magnetic field (Mori & Hailey 2002), we have systematically constructed atmospheric models by calculating polarization-dependent LTE opacities and addre…
The evolution of a star of initial mass 10 $M_{\odot}$, and metallicity $Z = 0.02$ in a Close Binary System (CBS) is followed from its main sequence until an ONe degenerate remnant forms. Restrictions have been made on the characteristics of the companion as well as on the initial orbital parameters in order to avoid the occurrence of reversal mass transfer before carbon is ignited in the core. The system undergoes three mass loss episodes. The first and second ones are a consequence of a case B Roche lobe overflow. During the third mass loss episode stellar winds may play a role comparable to…
We report the results of a non-LTE Fe, O and Mg abundance analysis of the carbon-nitrogen-rich ultra-metal-poor giants CS29498--043 and CS22949--037. The abundance of oxygen has been derived from measurements of the oxygen triplet at 7771-5 A in high resolution spectra obtained with KeckI/HIRES and the forbidden line [OI] 6300 A detected in the TNG/SARG spectra of CS29498-043. Detailed non-LTE analysis of Fe lines has provided reliable stellar parameters which, however, do not resolve the oxygen abundance conflict as derived from the OI 7771-5 A triplet and the [OI] 6300 A forbidden lines. We …
The 21Na(p,gamma)22Mg reaction is expected to play an important role in the nucleosynthesis of 22Na in Oxygen-Neon novae. The decay of 22Na leads to the emission of a characteristic 1.275 MeV gamma-ray line. This report provides the first direct measurement of the rate of this reaction using a radioactive 21Na beam, and discusses its astrophysical implications. The energy of the important state was measured to be E$_{c.m.}$= 205.7 $\pm$ 0.5 keV with a resonance strength $ωγ= 1.03\pm0.16_{stat}\pm0.14_{sys}$ meV.
We discuss the possibility to detect O/Ne white dwarfs by evidence for Ne overabundances. The hottest known WD, H1504+65, could be the only single WD for which we might be able to proof its O/Ne nature directly. Apart from this, strong Ne abundances are known or suspected only from binary systems, namely from a few novae, and from a handful of LMXBs. We try to verify the hypothesis that the latter might host strongly ablated O/Ne WD donors, by abundance analyses of the accretion disks in these systems. In any case, to conclude on O/Ne WDs just by strong Ne overabundances is problematic, becaus…
We present new spectroscopic observations of 13 H II regions in the Local Group spiral galaxy M33. The regions observed range from 1 to 7 kpc in distance from the nucleus. Of the 13 H II regions observed, the [O III] 4363 Angstrom line was detected in six regions. Electron temperatures were thus able to be determined directly from the spectra using the [O III] 4959,5007 A/4363 A line ratio. Based on these temperature measurements, oxygen and neon abundances and their radial gradients were calculated. For neon, a gradient of -0.016 +/- 0.017 dex/kpc was computed, which agrees with the Ne/H grad…
X-ray absorption spectroscopy provides a potentially powerful tool in determining the metal abundances in various phases of the interstellar medium (ISM). We present a case study of the sight line toward 4U 1820-303 (Galactic coordinates l, b=2.79, -7.91 and distance = 7.6 kpc), based on Chandra Grating observations. The detection of OI, OII, OIII, OVII, OVIII, and NeIX Kalpha absorption lines allows us to measure the atomic column densities of the neutral, warm ionized, and hot phases of the ISM through much of the Galactic disk. By comparing these measurements with the 21 cm hydrogen emissio…
We present a new determination of the metallicity gradient in M33, based on Keck/LRIS measurements of oxygen abundances using the temperature-sensitive emission line [OIII] 4363 A in 61 HII regions. These data approximately triple the sample of direct oxygen abundances in M33. We find a central abundance of 12 + log(O/H) = 8.36+/-0.04 and a slope of -0.027+/-0.012 dex/kpc, in agreement with infrared measurements of the neon abundance gradient but much shallower than most previous oxygen gradient measurements. There is substantial intrinsic scatter of 0.11 dex in the metallicity at any given ra…
We show that the Galactic bulge and disk share a similar, strong, decline in [O/Mg] ratio with [Mg/H]. The similarity of the [O/Mg] trend in these two, markedly different, populations suggests a metallicity-dependent modulation of the stellar yields from massive stars, by mass loss from winds, and related to the Wolf-Rayet phenomenon, as proposed by McWilliam & Rich (2004). We have modified existing models for the chemical evolution of the Galactic bulge and the solar neighborhood with the inclusion of metallicity-dependent oxygen yields from theoretical predictions for massive stars that incl…
We examine r-process nucleosynthesis in a "prompt supernova explosion" from an 8-10 Msun progenitor star, as an alternative scenario to the "neutrino wind" mechanism. In the present model, the progenitor star has formed an oxygen-neon-magnesium core at its center. The core-collapse simulations are performed with a one-dimension, Newtonian hydrodynamic code. We obtain a very weak prompt explosion, in which no r-processing occurs. We further simulate energetic prompt explosions by enhancement of the shock-heating energy, in order to investigate conditions necessary for the production of r-proces…
Non-LTE abundances of magnesium, aluminum and sulfur are derived for a sample of 23 low-v \sin i stars belonging to six northern OB associations of the Galactic disk within 1 kpc of the Sun. The abundances are obtained from the fitting of synthetic line profiles to high resolution spectra. A comparison of our results with HII region abundances indicates good agreement for sulfur while the cepheid abundances are higher. The derived abundances of Mg show good overlap with the cepheid results. The aluminum abundances for OB stars are significantly below the cepheid values. But, the OB star result…
This paper presents deep spectra of 14 planetary nebulae (PNs) at a variety of angular distances from the center of the flattened elliptical galaxy NGC 4697. Both near the center and among the most outlying PNs we have found several examples of very strong [O III] 5007, about 20 times brighter than Hbeta. This, together with strong [Ne III] lines, implies a lower limit for O and Ne abundances near solar at the center and also at more than two effective radii from the center of NGC 4697. Thus we have found, for the first time from individual stars, direct evidence of the existence of a metal-ri…
We report on a 39 ks observation of the 7.7-s low-mass X-ray binary pulsar 4U1626-67 with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer (HETGS) on the Chandra X-Ray Observatory. This ultracompact system consists of a disk-accreting magnetic neutron star and a very low mass, hydrogen-depleted companion in a 42-min binary. We have resolved the previously reported Ne/O emission line complex near 1 keV into Doppler pairs of broadened (2500 km/s FWHM) lines from highly ionized Ne and O. In most cases, the blue and red line components are of comparable strength, with blueshifts of 1550-2610 km/s…
We present magnesium abundances derived from high resolution spectra using several Mg I and two high excitation Mg II lines for 19 metal-poor stars with [Fe/H] values between -1.1 and +0.2. The main goal is to search for systematic differences in the derived abundances between the two ionisation state lines. Our analysis shows that the one-dimensional LTE and N-LTE study finds a very good agreement between these features. The [Mg/Fe] vs. [Fe/H] relationship derived, despite the small sample of stars, is also in agreement with the classical figure of increasing [Mg/Fe] with decreasing metallici…
The High Energy Transmission Grating (HETG) Spectrometer aboard the Chandra X-Ray Observatory was used to observe E0102-72, a ~1000 year old, oxygen rich supernova in the Small Magellanic Cloud. The HETG disperses the image of the remnant into a spectrum of images in the light of individual X-ray emission lines. Doppler shifts in the strongest lines of oxygen and neon reveal bulk motions of up to 2000 km/sec with a complex morphology. Comparison of progressive ionization stages of magnesium, neon, oxygen and silicon provide new insights into the mechanism of the `reverse shock' that heats the …
This paper investigates the peculiar behaviour of the light even (alpha-elements) and odd atomic number elements in red giants in the galactic bulge, both in terms of the chemical evolution of the bulge, and in terms of possible deep-mixing mechanisms in these evolved stars. Using UVES on VLT, we measure the abundances of the four light elements O, Na, Mg and Al in 13 red clump and 40 red giant branch stars in four fields spanning the bulge from b=-3 to -12°. We show that the resulting abundance patterns point towards a chemical enrichment dominated by massive stars at all metallicities. O, Mg…
We study the formation of neon-enriched donor stars in ultracompact X-ray binaries (orbital periods P<80 min) and show that their progenitors have to be low-mass (0.3 - 0.4 solar mass) ``hybrid'' white dwarfs (with CO cores and thick helium mantles). Stable mass transfer is possible if in the initial stages of mass exchange mass is lost from the system, taking away the specific orbital angular momentum of the accretor (``isotropic re-emission''). The excess of neon in the transferred matter is due to chemical fractionation of the white dwarf which has to occur prior to the Roche lobe overflow …
Carbon-oxygen white dwarfs contain neon-22 formed from alpha-captures onto nitrogen during core He burning in the progenitor star. In a white dwarf (type Ia) supernova, the neon-22 abundance determines, in part, the neutron-to-proton ratio and hence the abundance of radioactive nickel-56 that powers the lightcurve. The neon-22 abundance also changes the burning rate and hence the laminar flame speed. We tabulate the flame speedup for different initial carbon and neon-22 abundances and for a range of densities. This increase in the laminar flame speed--about 30% for a neon-22 mass fraction of 6…
The details of ignition of Type Ia supernovae remain fuzzy, despite the importance of this input for any large-scale model of the final explosion. Here, we begin a process of understanding the ignition of these hotspots by examining the burning of one zone of material, and then investigate the ignition of a detonation due to rapid heating at single point. We numerically measure the ignition delay time for onset of burning in mixtures of degenerate material and provide fitting formula for conditions of relevance in the Type Ia problem. Using the neon abundance as a proxy for the white dwarf met…
In this work we present the first spectroscopic results obtained with the Southern African Large Telescope (SALT) telescope during its perfomance-verification phase. We find that the Sagittarius dwarf spheroidal galaxy (Sgr) Sgr contains a youngest stellar population with [O/H] -0.2 and age t>1 Gyr, and an oldest population with [O/H]=-2.0. The values are based on spectra of two planetary nebulae (PNe), using empirical abundance determinations. We calculated abundances for O, N, Ne, Ar, S, Cl, Fe, C and He. We confirm the high abundances of PN StWr2-21 with 12+log(O/H) = 8.57+/-0.02 dex. The o…
The interior structure of the Sun can be studied with great accuracy using observations of its oscillations, similar to seismology of the Earth. Precise agreement between helioseismological measurements and predictions of theoretical solar models has been a triumph of modern astrophysics (Bahcall et al. 2005). However, a recent downward revision by 25-35% of the solar abundances of light elements such as C, N, O and Ne (Asplund et al. 2004) has broken this accordance: models adopting the new abundances incorrectly predict the depth of the convection zone, the depth profiles of sound speed and …
Atomic nuclei are transformed into each other in the cosmos by nuclear reactions inside stars: -- the process of nucleosynthesis. The basic concepts of determining nuclear reaction rates inside stars and how they manage to burn their fuel so slowly most of the time are discussed. Thermonuclear reactions involving protons in the hydrostatic burning of hydrogen in stars are discussed first. This is followed by triple alpha reactions in the helium burning stage and the issues of survival of carbon and oxygen in red giant stars connected with nuclear structure of oxygen and neon. Advanced stages o…
We compute and analyze the evolution of primordial stars of masses at the ZAMS between 5 M_sun and 10 M_sun, with and without overshooting. Our main goals are to determine the nature of the remnants of massive intermediate-mass primordial stars and to check the influence of overshooting in their evolution. Our calculations cover stellar evolution from the main sequence phase until the formation of the degenerate cores and the thermally pulsing phase. We have obtained the values for the limiting masses of Population III progenitor stars leading to carbon-oxygen and oxygen-neon compact cores. Mo…
The young oxygen-rich supernova remnant E0102-72 in the Small Magellanic Cloud has been observed with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer of Chandra. The high resolution X-ray spectrum reveals images of the remnant in the light of individual emission lines of oxygen, neon, magnesium and silicon. The peak emission region for hydrogen-like ions lies at larger radial distance from the SNR center than the corresponding helium-like ions, suggesting passage of the ejecta through the "reverse shock". We examine models which test this interpretation, and we discuss the implications.
Neon abundances are derived in four Galactic WC stars -- gamma Vel (WR11, WC8+O7.5III), HD156385 (WR90, WC7), HD192103 (WR135, WC8), and WR146 (WC5+O8) - using mid-infrared fine structure lines obtained with ISO/SWS. Stellar parameters for each star are derived using a non-LTE model atmospheric code (Hillier & Miller 1998) together with ultraviolet (IUE), optical (INT, AAT) and infrared (UKIRT, ISO) spectroscopy. In the case of gamma Vel, we adopt results from De Marco et al. (2000), who followed an identical approach. ISO/SWS datasets reveal the [NeIII] 15.5um line in each of our targets, whi…
H1504+65 is an extremely hot hydrogen-deficient white dwarf with an effective temperature close to 200,000 K. We present new FUV and soft X-ray spectra obtained with FUSE and Chandra, which confirm that H1504+65 has an atmosphere primarily composed of carbon and oxygen. The Chandra LETG spectrum (60-160 Angstroem) shows a wealth of photospheric absorption lines from highly ionized oxygen, neon, and - for the first time identified in this star - magnesium and suggests relatively high Ne and Mg abundances. This corroborates an earlier suggestion that H1504+65 represents a naked C/O stellar core …
