Neutrinos emitted from a supernova may undergo flavor conversions almost immediately above the core, with possible consequences for supernova dynamics and nucleosynthesis. However, the precise conditions for such fast conversions can be difficult to compute and require knowledge of the full angular distribution of the flavor-dependent neutrino fluxes, that is not available in typical supernova simulations. In this paper, we show that the overall flavor evolution is qualitatively similar to the growth of a so-called `zero mode', determined by the background matter and neutrino densities, which can be reliably predicted using only the second angular moments of the electron lepton number distribution, i.e., the difference in the angular distributions of $ν_e$ and $\barν_e$ fluxes. We propose that this zero mode, which neither requires computing the full Green's function nor a detailed knowledge of the angular distributions, may be useful for a preliminary diagnosis of possible fast flavor conversions in supernova simulations with modestly resolved angular distributions
Neutrino flux streaming from a supernova can undergo rapid flavor conversions almost immediately above the core. Focusing on this region, we study these fast conversions using a linear stability analysis. We find that, for realistic angular distributions of neutrinos, fast conversions can occur within a few nanoseconds in regions just above the neutrinosphere. Our results also show that neutrinos travelling towards the core make fast conversions more rapid. These conversions, if they exist, can have significant implications for supernova explosion mechanism and nucleosynthesis.
It has been recently pointed out that neutrino fluxes from a supernova can show substantial flavor conversions almost immediately above the core. Using linear stability analyses and numerical solutions of the fully nonlinear equations of motion, we perform a detailed study of these fast conversions, focussing on the region just above the supernova core. We carefully specify the instabilities for evolution in space or time, andfind that neutrinos travelling towards the core make fast conversions more generic, i.e., possible for a wider range of flux ratios and angular asymmetries that produce a…
Neutrinos in a core-collapse supernova can undergo fast flavor conversions with a possible impact on the explosion mechanism and nucleosynthesis. We perform the first non-linear simulations of fast conversions in the presence of three neutrino flavors. The recent supernova simulations with muon production call for such an analysis, as they relax the standard $ν_{μ,τ}=\barν_{μ,τ}$ (two-flavor) assumption. Our results show the significance of muon and tau lepton number angular distributions, together with the traditional electron lepton number ones. Indeed, our three-flavor results are potential…
We show that a self-interacting neutrino gas can spontaneously acquire a non-stationary pulsating component in its flavor content, with a frequency that can exactly cancel the "multi-angle" refractive effects of dense matter. This can then enable homogeneous and inhomogeneous flavor conversion instabilities to exist even at large neutrino and matter densities, where the system would have been stable if the evolution were strictly stationary. Large flavor conversions, especially close to a supernova core, are possible via this novel mechanism. This may have important consequences for the explos…
Electron number densities in stars and the Earth are inhomogeneous because of atomic electrons. The large inhomogeneities on atomic-scale tend to form at tops of respective layers of stars, and 1s electrons of O locally produce weak potentials higher than that of the high MSW resonance. Then, supernova neutrinos experience vast numbers of non-adiabatic transitions. This inhomogeneous electron potential generates finite amplitudes of all three propagation eigenstates, and wave packets effectively separate. Then, spectral differences between three flavors significantly diminishes after propagati…
Fast flavor conversions of supernova neutrinos, possible near the neutrinosphere, depends on an interesting interplay of collisions and neutrino oscillations. Contrary to naive expectations, the rate of self-induced neutrino oscillations, due to neutrino-neutrino forward scattering, comfortably exceeds the rate of collisions even deep inside the supernova core. Consistently accounting for collisions and oscillations, we present the first calculations to show that collisions can create the conditions for fast flavor conversions of neutrinos, but oscillations can continue without significant dam…
Neutrino-neutrino interactions can lead to collective flavor conversion in the dense parts of a core collapse supernova. Growing instabilities that lead to collective conversions have been studied intensely in the limit of two-neutrino species and occur for inverted mass ordering in the case of a perfectly spherical supernova. We examine two simple models of colliding and intersecting neutrino beams and show, that for three neutrino species instabilities exist also for normal mass ordering even in the case of a fully symmetric system. Whereas the instability for inverted mass ordering is assoc…
The supernova neutrino flavor evolution in the presence of the non-trivial neutrino magnetic moment and strong magnetic field is numerically derived using the two-flavor and single-angle approximation. The novel properties of collective neutrino oscillations are studied and distinct patterns of flavor and spin-flavor spectral splits are presented. Finally we also discuss how the neutrino magnetic moment affects the observable supernova neutrino energy spectra.
We consider active-sterile neutrino conversions in a supernova in the presence of random magnetic field domains. For large enough fields the magnetization of the medium may enhance the active to sterile neutrino conversion rates. Neglecting neutrino transition magnetic moments we show that for KeV neutrino mass squared differences these limits may overcome those that would apply in the isotropic case.
Self-induced flavor conversion of supernova (SN) neutrinos is a generic feature of neutrino-neutrino dispersion. The corresponding run-away modes in flavor space can spontaneously break the original symmetries of the neutrino flux and in particular can spontaneously produce small-scale features as shown in recent schematic studies. However, the unavoidable "multi-angle matter effect" shifts these small-scale instabilities into regions of matter and neutrino density which are not encountered on the way out from a SN. The traditional modes which are uniform on the largest scales are most prone f…
During the accretion phase of a core-collapse supernova (SN), the deleptonization flux has recently been found to develop a global dipole pattern (LESA---Lepton Emission Self-sustained Asymmetry). The $ν_e$ minus $\barν_e$ flux essentially vanishes in one direction, potentially facilitating self-induced flavor conversion. On the other hand, below the stalled shock wave, self-induced flavor conversion is typically suppressed by multi-angle matter effects, preventing any impact of flavor conversion on SN explosion dynamics. In a schematic model of SN neutrino fluxes, we study the impact of modif…
The active-sterile neutrino conversion is studied for neutrino propagating in the axial potential generated by magnetised electron plasma in the supernova medium. We consider the effect of random magnetic field $B_{rms}$ on the average neutrino conversion probability. We obtained the constraint on $Δm^2$ and $\sin^2 2θ$ for different strength of the random magnetic fields, by considering the positive definiteness of the average neutrino conversion probability inside the supernova core. Our calculation shows that, $B_{rms}\le 0.63\times 10^{14}$ Gauss is preferable so that small values of $Δm^2…
Neutrinos propagating in dense neutrino media such as core-collapse supernovae and neutron star merger remnants can experience the so-called fast flavor conversions on scales much shorter than those expected in vacuum. A very generic class of fast flavor instabilities is the ones which are produced by the backward scattering of neutrinos off the nuclei at relatively large distances from the supernova core. In this study we demonstrate that despite their ubiquity, such fast instabilities are unlikely to cause significant flavor conversions if the population of neutrinos in the backward directio…
Self-induced flavor conversions of supernova (SN) neutrinos can strongly modify the flavor dependent fluxes. We perform a linearized flavor stability analysis with accretion-phase matter profiles of a 15 M_sun spherically symmetric model and corresponding neutrino fluxes. We use realistic energy and angle distributions, the latter deviating strongly from quasi-isotropic emission, thus accounting for both multi-angle and multi-energy effects. For our matter and neutrino density profile we always find stable conditions: flavor conversions are limited to the usual MSW effect. In this case one may…
Neutrinos streaming from a supernova (SN) core occasionally scatter in the envelope, producing a small "neutrino halo" with a much broader angle distribution than the primary flux originating directly from the core. Cherry et al. (2012) have recently pointed out that, during the accretion phase, the halo actually dominates neutrino-neutrino refraction at distances exceeding some 100 km. However, the multiangle matter effect (which increases if the angle distribution is broader) still appears to suppress self-induced flavor conversion during the accretion phase.
We study the effects of non-standard self-interactions (NSSI) of neutrinos streaming out of a core-collapse supernova. We show that with NSSI, the standard linear stability analysis gives rise to linearly as well as exponentially growing solutions. For a two-box spectrum, we demonstrate analytically that flavor-preserving NSSI lead to a suppression of bipolar collective oscillations. In the intersecting four-beam model, we show that flavor-violating NSSI can lead to fast oscillations even when the angle between the neutrino and antineutrino beams is obtuse, which is forbidden in the Standard M…
{Large enough random magnetic fields may affect in an important way neutrino conversion rates, even in the case where neutrinos have zero transition magnetic moments. We consider their effect in the case of active to sterile \neu conversions in a supernova and show that for KeV neutrino masses these limits may overcome those derived for the case of zero magnetic field.}

We examine active-sterile neutrino conversion in the late time post-core-bounce supernova environment. By including the effect of feedback on the Mikheyev-Smirnov-Wolfenstein (MSW) conversion potential, we obtain a large range of neutrino mixing parameters which produce a favorable environment for the r-process. We look at the signature of this effect in the current generation of neutrino detectors now coming on line. We also investigate the impact of the neutrino-neutrino forward scattering-induced potential on the MSW conversion.
In environments with high dense neutrino gases, such as in core-collapse supernovae, the neutrinos can experience collective neutrino oscillation due to their self-interactions. In particular, fast flavor conversion driven by the crossings in the neutrino angular distribution can affect explosion mechanism, nucleosynthesis, and neutrino observation. We perform the numerical computation of nonlinear flavor evolution on the neutrino angular distribution with tiny crossings expected to be generated in the preshock region. We demonstrate that the fast instability is triggered and a cascade develop…
Neutrino-neutrino refraction causes self-induced flavor conversion in dense neutrino fluxes. For the first time, we include the azimuth angle of neutrino propagation as an explicit variable and find a new generic multi-azimuth-angle (MAA) instability which, for simple spectra, occurs in the normal neutrino mass hierarchy. Matter suppression of this instability in supernovae requires larger densities than the traditional bimodal case. The new instability shows explicitly that solutions of the equations for collective flavor oscillations need not inherit the symmetries of initial or boundary con…
It has been noted for a long time that, in some circumstances, {\sl massless} neutrinos may be {\sl mixed} in the leptonic charged current. Conventional neutrino oscillation searches in vacuum are insensitive to this mixing. We discuss the effects of resonant massless-neutrino conversions in the dense medium of a supernova. In particular, we show how the detected $\barν_e$ energy spectra from SN1987a and the supernova $r$-process nucleosynthesis may be used to provide very stringent constraints on the mixing of {\sl massless} neutrinos.
Collective pair conversion $ν_e\barν_e\leftrightarrow ν_{x}\barν_{x}$ by forward scattering, where $x=μ$ or $τ$, may be generic for supernova neutrino transport. Depending on the local angular intensity of the electron lepton number carried by neutrinos, the conversion rate is "fast," i.e., of the order of $\sqrt{2}G_{\rm{F}}(n_{ν_e}{-}\,n_{\barν_e})\ggΔm^2_{\rm atm}/2E$. We present a novel approach to understand these phenomena: A dispersion relation for the frequency and wave number $(Ω,\bf{K})$ of disturbances in the mean field of $ν_eν_x$ flavor coherence. Run-away solutions occur in "disp…
We investigate resonant spin-flavor (RSF) conversions of supernova neutrinos which are induced by the interaction of neutrino magnetic moment and supernova magnetic fields. From the formulation which includes all three-flavor neutrinos and anti-neutrinos, we give a new crossing diagram that includes not only ordinary MSW resonance but also magnetically-induced RSF effect. With the diagram, it is found that four conversions occur in supernova, two are induced by the RSF effect and two by the pure MSW. We also numerically calculate neutrino conversions in supernova matter, using neutrino mixing …
Self induced neutrino flavor conversions in the dense regions of stellar core collapse are almost exclusively studied in the standard two flavor scenario. Linear stability analysis has been successfully used to understand these flavor conversions. This is the first linearized study of $\textit{three flavor}$ fast instabilities. The `fast' conversions are fascinating distinctions of the dense neutrino systems. In the fast modes the collective oscillation dynamics are independent of the neutrino mass, growing at the scale of the large neutrino-neutrino interaction strength ($10^5$ km$^{-1}$) of …
We investigate the multi-azimuthal angle (MAA) effect on collective neutrino oscillation by considering the three-dimensional neutrino momentum distribution in a realistic electron-capture supernova model with an $8.8 M_{\odot}$ progenitor. We find that the MAA effect induces collective flavor conversions at epochs when it is completely suppressed under the axial-symmetric approximation. This novel activity is switched on/off by the growth of the MAA instability and imprints additional time evolution in the expected neutrino event rate. We validate our results by extending the linear stability…

In the dense supernova environment, neutrinos can undergo fast flavor conversions which depend on the large neutrino-neutrino interaction strength. It has been recently shown that both their presence and outcome can be affected when passing from the commonly used three neutrino species approach to the more general one with six species. Here, we build up on a previous work performed on this topic and perform a numerical simulation of flavor evolution in both space and time, assuming six neutrino species. We find that the results presented in our previous work remain qualitatively the same even …
If $ν_μ$ or $ν_τ$ mix with $ν_e$, neutrino oscillations and collisions in a supernova (SN) core allow these flavors effectively to participate in $β$ equilibrium and thus to obtain a large chemical potential. If a sterile species mixes with $ν_e$, these effects lead to an anomalous loss of energy and lepton number. We study flavor conversion in a SN core on the basis of a new kinetic equation which rigorously includes neutrino interference and degeneneracy effects. Our discussion serves as an example and illustration of the properties of this ``non-abelian Boltzmann equation''.
A light pseudoscalar coupled to two photons would be copiously emitted by the core of a supernova and part of this flux would be converted to gamma-rays by the galactic magnetic field. Measurements on the SN1987A gamma-ray flux by the Gamma-Ray Spectrometer on the Solar Maximum Mission satellite imply stringents bounds on such process. The improved generation of satellite-borne detectors, like EGRET or the projegeneration of satellite-borne detectors, like EGRET or the project GLAST, could be able to detect a pseudoscalar-to-photon signal from a nearby supernova.
Axionlike-particles (ALPs) are one promising type of dark matter candidate particle that may generate detectable effects on $γ$-ray spectra other than the canonical weakly interacting massive particles. In this work we search for such oscillation effects in the spectra of supernova remnants caused by the photon-ALP conversion, using the Fermi Large Area Telescope data. Three bright supernova remnants, IC443, W44, and W51C, are analyzed. The inclusion of photon-ALP oscillations yields an improved fit to the $γ$-ray spectrum of IC443, which gives a statistical significance of $4.2σ$ in favor of …
We study the resonant spin-flavor (RSF) conversion of supernova neutrinos, which is induced by the interaction between the nonzero neutrino magnetic moment and the supernova magnetic fields, and its dependence on presupernova models. As the presupernova models, we adopt the latest ones by Woosley, Heger, and Weaver, and, further, models with both solar and zero metallicity are investigated. Since the $(1-2Y_e)$ profile of the new presupernova models, which is responsible for the RSF conversion, suddenly drops at the resonance region, the completely adiabatic RSF conversion is not realized, eve…
The unknown neutrino parameters may leave detectable signatures in the supernova (SN) neutrino flux. However, even the contribution from the MSW flavor transition alone could cause ambiguity in the interpretation to the neutrino signals because of the uncertain local density profile of the SN matter and the model-dependent SN neutrino spectral parameters. A specific parametrization to the unknown local density profile is proposed in this work, and the contribution from the standard MSW effect is investigated through a multi-detector analysis of the SN neutrinos. In establishing the model-indep…
We discuss the effects of resonant $ν_e \to ν_s$ and $\barν_e \to \barν_s$ ($ν_s$ is a sterile neutrino) conversions in the dense medium of a supernova. In particular, we assume the sterile neutrino $ν_s$ to be in the hot dark matter few eV mass range. The implications of such a scenario for the supernova shock re-heating, the detected $\barν_e$ signal from SN1987A and for the r-process nucleosynthesis hypothesis are analysed in some detail. The resulting constraints on mixing and mass difference for the $ν_e-ν_s$ system are derived. There is also an allowed region in the neutrino parameter sp…
A dense gas of neutrinos and antineutrinos can undergo fast pairwise conversions near the decoupling regions of core-collapse supernovae and in compact binary neutron star mergers. The flavor dependent neutrino heating can play a role in sustaining convection inside the hot and dense matter. In this paper, we study the unexplored effect of the bulk velocity of matter on fast pairwise conversions and demonstrate that depending on the direction and the magnitude of the bulk velocity, neutrino flavor conversions could be significantly enhanced or suppressed. The bulk velocity of matter, which is …
There is mounting evidence that neutrinos undergo fast flavor conversion (FFC) in core-collapse supernova (CCSN). In this letter, we investigate the roles of stellar rotation on the occurrence of FFC by carrying out axisymmetric CCSN simulations with full Boltzmann neutrino transport. Our result suggests that electron neutrino lepton number (ELN) angular crossings, which are the necessary and sufficient condition to trigger FFC, preferably occur in the equatorial region for rotating CCSNe. By scrutinizing the neutrino--matter interaction and neutrino radiation field, we find some pieces of evi…
In very dense environments, neutrinos can undergo fast flavor conversions on scales as short as a few centimeters provided that the angular distribution of the neutrino lepton number crosses zero. This work presents the first attempt to establish whether the non-negligible abundance of muons and their interactions with neutrinos in the core of supernovae can affect the occurrence of such crossings. For this purpose we employ state-of-the-art one-dimensional core-collapse supernova simulations, considering models that include muon-neutrino interactions as well as models without these reactions.…
Axion-photon conversion induced by intergalactic magnetic fields has been proposed as an explanation for the dimming of distant supernovae of type Ia SNe Ia) without cosmic acceleration. The effect depends on the intergalactic electron density $n_e$ as well as the $B$-field strength and domain size. We show that for $n_e\alt 10^{-9} {\rm cm}^{-3}$ the same mechanism would cause excessive spectral distortion of the cosmic microwave background (CMB). This small-$n_e$ parameter region had been left open by the most restrictive previous constraints based on the dispersion of quasar (QSO) spectra. …
The neutrino spin-flavor conversion of \barν_e and ν_μwhich is induced by the interaction of the Majorana neutrino magnetic moment and magnetic fields in the collapse-driven supernova is investigated in detail. We calculate the conversion probability by using the latest precollapse models of Woosley and Weaver (1995), and also those of Nomono and Hashimoto (1988), changing the stellar mass and metallicity in order to estimate the effect of the astrophysical uncertainties. Contour maps of the conversion probability are given for all the models as a function of neutrino mass squared difference a…
We summarize our current understanding of the neutrino flavor conversions inside a core collapse supernova, clarifying the important role played by the "collective effects" in determining flavor conversion probabilities. The potentially observable $ν_e$ and $\barν_e$ spectra may help us identify the neutrino mixing scenario, distinguish between primary flux models, and learn more about the supernova explosion.

Fast-pairwise collective neutrino oscillation represents a key uncertainty in the theory of core-collapse supernova (CCSN). Despite the potentially significant impact on CCSN dynamics, it is usually neglected in numerical models of CCSN because of the formidable technical difficulties of self-consistently incorporating this physics. In this paper, we investigate the prospects for the occurrence of fast flavor conversion by diagnosing electron neutrino lepton number (ELN) crossing in more than a dozen state-of-the-art three-dimensional CCSN models. ELN crossings is a necessary condition for tri…
The large neutrino fluxes emitted with a distinct flavor hierarchy from core-collapse supernovae (SNe) during the post-bounce accretion phase, offer the best opportunity to detect effects from neutrino flavor oscillations. We perform a dedicated study of the SN neutrino flavor evolution during the accretion phase, using results from recent neutrino radiation hydrodynamics simulations. In contrast to what expected in the presence of only neutrino-neutrino interactions, we find that the multi-angle effects associated with the dense ordinary matter suppress collective oscillations. This is relate…
Recently Csaki, Kaloper and Terning (hep-ph/0111311) suggested that the observed dimming of distant type Ia supernovae may be a consequence of mixing of the photons with very light axions. We point out that the effect of the plasma, in which the photons are propagating, must be taken into account. This effect changes the oscillation probability and renders the dimming frequency-dependent, contrary to observations. One may hope to accommodate the data by averaging the oscillations over many different coherence domains. We estimate the effect of coherence loss, either due to the inhomogeneities …
