We derive the most general junction conditions for the fourth-order brane gravity constructed of arbitrary functions of curvature invariants. We reduce these fourth-order theories to second order theories at the expense of introducing new scalar and tensor fields - the scalaron and the tensoron. In order to obtain junction conditions we apply the method of generalized Gibbons-Hawking boundary terms which are appended to the appropriate actions. After assuming the continuity of the scalaron and the tensoron on the brane, we recover junction conditions for such general brane universe models previously obtained by different methods. The derived junction conditions can serve studying the cosmological implications of the higher-order brane gravity models.
We study the quantum particle creation in a toy model of spherically symmetric gravitational collapse whose final product is not a black hole but a gravastar. Precedent studies revealed that even in the case of the gravitational collapse to form a horizonless ultra-compact object, thermal radiation named transient Hawking radiation is generated at the late stage of the gravitational collapse, and a sudden stop of collapsing motion to form a horizonless ultra-compact object causes one or two bursts of quantum particle creation. The very different behavior of the model studied in this paper from…
We construct four-center bubbled BPS solutions with a Gibbons-Hawking base space. We give a systematic procedure to build scaling solutions: starting from three-supertube configurations and using generalized spectral flows and gauge transformations to extend to solutions with four Gibbons-Hawking centers. This allows us to construct very large families of smooth horizonless solutions that have the same charges and angular momentum as supersymmetric black holes with a macroscopically large horizon area. Our construction reveals that all scaling solutions with four Gibbons Hawking centers have a…
We discuss the quantization of linearized gravity in the background de Sitter spacetime using a gauge-invariant formalism to write the perturbed gravitational field in the static patch. This field is quantized after fixing the gauge completely. The response rate of this field to monochromatic multipole sources is then computed in the thermal equilibrium state with the well known Gibbons-Hawking temperature. We compare this response rate with the one obtained in the Bunch-Davies-like vacuum state defined in the Poincaré patch. These response rates are found to be the same as expected. This agre…
We describe a quaternionic-based Ansatz generalizing the Gibbons-Hawking Ansatz to a class of hyperkähler metrics with hidden symmetries. We then apply it to obtain explicit expressions for gravitational instanton metrics of type $D_k$.
Recent work on non proper-gauge degrees of freedom in the context of the Casimir effect is reviewed. In his original paper, Casimir starts by pointing out that, when the electromagnetic field is confined between two perfectly conducting parallel plates, there is an additional physical polarization of the electromagnetic field at zero value for the discretized longitudinal momentum besides the standard two transverse polarizations at non-zero values. In this review, the dynamics of these additional modes is obtained from first principles. At finite temperature, their contribution to the entropy…
We model the back-reaction of a static observer in four-dimensional de Sitter spacetime by means of a singular $\mathbb Z_q$ quotient. The set of fixed points of the $\mathbb Z_q$ action consists of a pair of codimension two minimal surfaces given by 2-spheres in the Euclidean geometry. The introduction of an orbifold parameter $q>1$ permits the construction of an effective action for the bulk gravity theory with support on each of these minimal surfaces. The effective action corresponds to that of Liouville field theory on a 2-sphere with a finite vacuum expectation value of the Liouville fie…
We review the geometry of K3 surfaces and then describe this geometry from the point of view of an approximate metric of Gibbons-Hawking form. This metric arises from the M-theory lift of the tree-level supergravity description of type IIA string theory on the T^3/Z_2 orientifold, the D6/O6 orientifold T-dual to type I on T^3. At large base, it provides a good approximation to the exact K3 metric everywhere except in regions that can be made arbitrarily small. The metric is hyperkähler, and we give explicit expressions for the hyperkähler forms as well as harmonic representatives of all cohomo…
The scale invariant scalar and tensor perturbations, which are predicted from inflation, are eigenmodes in the conformal coordinates. The 'out' observer in the de Sitter space observes a thermal spectrum with a Gibbons-Hawking temperature $H/2π$ of these 'Bunch-Davies' particles. The tensor power spectrum observed in experiments can have an imprint of the Gibbons-Hawking thermal distribution due to the mode mixing between 'in' state conformal coordinates and the coordinate frame of the observer. We find that the the Bunch-Davies modes appear as thermal modes to the asymptotic Minkowski observe…
We show that the geometry of $4n$-dimensional quaternionic Kähler spaces with a locally free $\mathbb{R}^{n+1}$-action admits a Gibbons-Hawking-like description based on the Galicki-Lawson notion of quaternionic Kähler moment map. This generalizes to higher dimensions a four-dimensional construction, due to Calderbank and Pedersen, of self-dual Einstein manifolds with two linearly independent commuting Killing vector fields. As an application, we use this new Ansatz to give an explicit equivariant completion of the twistor space construction of the local c-map proposed by Roček, Vafa and Vando…
We study an $\mathcal{N}=2$, pure $U(1)$ SYM theory on a Gibbons-Hawking space $Ω$-deformed using the $U(1)$ isometry. The resultant 3D theory, after an appropriate "Nekrasov-Witten" change of variables, is asymptotically equivalent to the undeformed theory at spatial infinity but differs from it as one approaches the NUT centers which are fixed points under the $U(1)$ action. The 3D theory may be recast in the form of a generalized hyperkähler sigma model introduced in \cite{Dey:2014lja} where the target space is a one-parameter family of hyperkähler spaces. The hyperkähler fibers have a pref…
We show how to write any Kaehler metric of complex dimension 2 admitting a holomorphic isometry as a simple 1-real-function deformation of a Gibbons-Hawking metric. Hyper-Kaehler metrics with a tri-holomorphic isometry (Gibbons-Hawking metrics) or with a mono-holomorphic isometry are recovered for particular values of the additional function. The new general metric can be used as an Ansatz in several interesting physical problems.
We study holographic renormalization of 3D minimal massive gravity using the Chern-Simons-like formulation of the model. We explicitly present Gibbons- Hawking term as well as all counterterms needed to make the action finite in terms of dreibein and spin-connection. This can be used to find correlation functions of stress tensor of holographic dual field theory.
Virial (aka scaling) identities are integral identities that are useful for a variety of purposes in non-linear field theories, including establishing no-go theorems for solitonic and black hole solutions, as well as for checking the accuracy of numerical solutions. In this paper, we provide a pedagogical rationale for the derivation of such integral identities, starting from the standard variational treatment of particle mechanics. In the framework of one-dimensional (1D) effective actions, the treatment presented here yields a set of useful formulas for computing virial identities in any fie…
The effective action of string theory on a spacetime manifold with boundary has both bulk and boundary terms. We propose that both bulk and boundary actions, may be found by imposing the effective action to be invariant under the gauge transformations and under the string dualities. Using this proposal at the leading order of $α'$, the standard Gibbons-Hawking-York boundary term is reproduced.
We compute the vacuum energy of three-dimensional asymptotically flat space based on a Chern-Simons formulation for the Poincare group. The equivalent action is nothing but the Einstein-Hilbert term in the bulk plus half of the Gibbons-Hawking term at the boundary. The derivation is based on the evaluation of the Noether charges in the vacuum. We obtain that the vacuum energy of this space has the same value as the one of the asymptotically flat limit of three-dimensional anti-de Sitter space.
