We associate a geometric space to an arbitrary convex polytope. Our construction parallels the construction by D. Cox of a toric variety as a GIT quotient. The spaces that we obtain are endowed with a natural stratification and perfectly mimic the features of toric varieties associated to rational convex polytopes.
The purpose of this note is to give a generalization of the statement that the anticanonical class of a (smooth) projective toric variety is the sum of invariant prime divisors, corresponding to the rays in its fan (or facets in its polytope), to some other classes of varieties with algebraic group actions. To this end, we suggest an analogue of the notion of anticanonical class (of a compact complex manifold) for linear families of convex polytopes. This is inspired by the Serre duality for smooth projective varieties as well as the Ehrhart-Macdonald reciprocity for rational polytopes. The ma…
The paper presents a proof of the Hodge Riemann relations for the combinatorial intersection cohomology of a polytope, as fist given by K.Karu, in terms of geometric operations on polytopes.
Computing mixed volume of convex polytopes is an important problem in computational algebraic geometry. This paper establishes sufficient conditions under which the mixed volume of several convex polytopes exactly equals the normalized volume of the convex hull of their union. Under these conditions the problem of computing mixed volume of several polytopes can be transformed into a volume computation problem for a single polytope in the same dimension. We demonstrate through problems from real world applications that substantial reduction in computational costs can be achieved via this transf…
A classical result of Schubert calculus is an inductive description of Schubert cycles using divided difference (or push-pull) operators in Chow rings. We define convex geometric analogs of push-pull operators and describe their applications to the theory of Newton-Okounkov convex bodies. Convex geometric push-pull operators yield an inductive construction of Newton-Okounkov polytopes of Bott-Samelson varieties. In particular, we construct a Minkowski sum of Feigin-Fourier-Littelmann-Vinberg polytopes using convex geometric push-pull operators in type A.
We compute the Betti numbers of the geometric spaces associated to nonrational simple convex polytopes and find that they depend on the combinatorial type of the polytope exactly as in the rational case. This shows that the combinatorial features of the starting polytope are encoded in these generalized toric spaces as they are in their rational counterparts.
This note provides a simple proof for the equality between the normalized volume of a convex polytope with $m$ vertices and the mixed volume of $m$ simplices and thus shows the seemingly restrictive problem of computing mixed volume of simplices is still at least as hard as computing volumes of convex polytopes.
We provide a complete classification up to isomorphism of all smooth convex lattice 3-polytopes with at most 16 lattice points. There exist in total 103 different polytopes meeting these criteria. Of these, 99 are strict Cayley polytopes and the remaining 4 are obtained as inverse stellar subdivisions of such polytopes. We derive a classification, up to isomorphism, of all smooth embeddings of toric threefolds in $\mathbb{P}^N$ where $N\le 15$. Again we have in total 103 such embeddings. Of these, 99 are projective bundles embedded in $\mathbb{P}^N$ and the remaining 4 are blow-ups of such tor…
This paper defines, for each convex polytope $Δ$, a family $H_wΔ$ of vector spaces. The definition uses a combination of linear algebra and combinatorics. When what is called exact calculation holds, the dimension $h_wΔ$ of $H_wΔ$ is a linear function of the flag vector $fΔ$. It is expected that the $H_wΔ$ are examples, for toric varieties, of the new topological invariants introduced by the author in "Local-global intersection homolog" (preprint alg-geom/9709011).
In this research announcement we associate to each convex polytope, possibly nonrational and nonsimple, a family of compact spaces that are stratified by quasifolds, i.e. the strata are locally modelled by $\R^k$ modulo the action of a discrete, possibly infinite, group. Each stratified space is endowed with a symplectic structure and a moment mapping having the property that its image gives the original polytope back. These spaces may be viewed as a natural generalization of symplectic toric varieties to the nonrational setting. We provide here the explicit construction of these spaces, and a…
A simple convex lattice polytope $\Box$ defines a torus-equivariant line bundle $\LB$ over a toric variety $\XB.$ Atiyah and Bott's Lefschetz fixed-point theorem is applied to the torus action on the $d''$-complex of $\LB$ and information is obtained about the lattice points of $\Box$. In particular an explicit formula is derived, computing the number of lattice points and the volume of $\Box$ in terms of geometric data at its extreme points. We show this to be equivalent the results of Brion \cite{brion} and give an elementary convex geometric interpretation by performing Laurent expansions s…
In 2012 Gubeladze (Adv.\ Math.\ 2012) introduced the notion of k-convex-normal polytopes to show that integral polytopes all of whose edges are longer than 4d(d+1) have the integer decomposition property. In the first part of this paper we show that for lattice polytopes there is no difference between k- and (k+1)-convex-normality (for k >= 3) and improve the bound to 2d(d+1). In the second part we extend the definition to pairs of polytopes and show that for rational polytopes P and Q, where the normal fan of P is a refinement of the normal fan of Q, if every edge e_P of P is at least d times…
In this paper, we give an algebro-geometric characterization of Cayley polytopes. As a special case, we also characterize lattice polytopes with lattice width one by using Seshadri constants.
We classify projective toric manifolds whose dual variety is not a hypersurface in the dual projective space. Under the standard dictionary between toric geometry and convex geometry, they correspond to certain convex Delzant integer polytopes, P, which we call defect polytopes. Using the geometrical classification we give a detailed description of defect polytopes and prove that they are characterized by the vanishing of a combinatorial invariant, denoted by c(P). We further prove that a related invariant, c*(P), is nonnegative, for any simple convex integral polytope.
We construct, for each convex polytope, possibly nonrational and nonsimple, a family of compact spaces that are stratified by quasifolds, i.e. each of these spaces is a collection of quasifolds glued together in an suitable way. A quasifold is a space locally modelled on $\R^k$ modulo the action of a discrete, possibly infinite, group. The way strata are glued to each other also involves the action of an (infinite) discrete group. Each stratified space is endowed with a symplectic structure and a moment mapping having the property that its image gives the original polytope back. These spaces m…
A Newton-Okounkov convex body is a convex body constructed from a projective variety with a valuation on its homogeneous coordinate ring; this generalizes a Newton polytope for a toric variety. This convex body has various kinds of information about the original projective variety; for instance, Kaveh showed that the string polytopes from representation theory are examples of Newton-Okounkov bodies for Schubert varieties. In this paper, we extend the notion of string polytopes for Demazure modules to generalized Demazure modules, and prove that the resulting generalized string polytopes are id…
The main object in this paper is a certain rational convex polytope whose lattice points give a polyhedral realization of a highest weight crystal basis. This is also identical to a Newton-Okounkov body of a flag variety, and it gives a toric degeneration. In this paper, we prove that a specific class of this polytope is given by Kiritchenko's Demazure operators on polytopes. This implies that polytopes in this class are all lattice polytopes. As an application, we give a sufficient condition for the corresponding toric variety to be Gorenstein Fano.
Let $P_1,\dots, P_n$ and $Q_1,\dots, Q_n$ be convex polytopes in $\mathbb{R}^n$ such that $P_i\subset Q_i$. It is well-known that the mixed volume has the monotonicity property: $V(P_1,\dots,P_n)\leq V(Q_1,\dots,Q_n)$. We give two criteria for when this inequality is strict in terms of essential collections of faces as well as mixed polyhedral subdivisions. This geometric result allows us to characterize sparse polynomial systems with Newton polytopes $P_1,\dots,P_n$ whose number of isolated solutions equals the normalized volume of the convex hull of $P_1\cup\dots\cup P_n$. In addition, we ob…
We call complex quasifold of dimension k a space that is locally isomorphic to the quotient of an open subset of the space C^k by the holomorphic action of a discrete group; the analogue of a complex torus in this setting is called a complex quasitorus. We associate to each simple polytope, rational or not, a family of complex quasifolds having same dimension as the polytope, each containing a dense open orbit for the action of a suitable complex quasitorus. We show that each of these spaces M is diffeomorphic to one of the symplectic quasifolds defined in http://arXiv.org/abs/math:SG/9904179,…
