We present our photometric study of the stellar association NGC 602 in the wing of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The data were taken in the filters F555W and F814W using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on-board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Photometry was performed using the ACS module of the stellar photometry package DOLPHOT. We detected more than 5,500 stars with a magnitude range of 14 \lsim m_{555} \lsim 28 mag. Three prominent stellar concentrations are identified with star counts in the observed field, the association NGC 602 itself, and two clusters, one of them not being currently in any known catalog. The Color-Magnitude Diagrams (CMDs) of both clusters show features typical for young open clusters, while that of the association reveals bright main sequence (MS) and faint pre-main sequence (PMS) stars as the members of the system. We construct the initial mass spectrum (IMS) of the association by applying an age-independent method of counting the PMS stars within evolutionary tracks, while for the bright MS stars we transform their magnitudes to masses with the use of mass-luminosity relations. The IMS of NGC 602 is found to be well represented by a single-power law, corresponding to an Initial Mass Function (IMF) of slope Γ\approx -1.2 for 1 \lsim M/M{\solar} \lsim 45. This indicates that the shape of the IMF of a star forming system in the SMC for stars with masses higher than 1 M{\solar} seems to be quite similar to the field IMF in the solar neighborhood.
Photometry with HST's ACS reveals that the subgiant branch (SGB) of the globular cluster NGC 1851 splits into two well-defined branches. If the split is due only to an age effect, the two SGBs would imply two star formation episodes separated by $\sim$ 1 Gyr. We discuss other anomalies in NGC 1851 which could be interpreted in terms of a double stellar population. Finally, we compare the case of NGC 1851 with the other two globulars known to host multiple stellar populations, and show that all three clusters differ in several important respects.
We present a photometric study of the star-forming region NGC 346 and its surrounding field in the Small Magellanic Cloud, using data taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The data set contains both short and long exposures for increased dynamic range, and photometry was performed using the ACS module of the stellar photometry package DOLPHOT. We detected almost 100,000 stars over a magnitude range of V ~ 11 to V ~ 28 mag, including all stellar types from the most massive young stars to faint lower main sequence and pre-main sequence stars.…
We report the discovery of a rich population of low mass stars in the young, massive star forming region N66/NGC346 in the Small Magellanic Cloud, from deep V, I and H alpha images taken with the HST/ACS. These stars have likely formed together with the NGC346 cluster, ~3-5 Myr ago. Their magnitude and colors are those of pre-main sequence stars in the mass range 0.6-3 Mo, mostly concentrated in the main cluster, but with secondary subclusters spread over a region across ~45 pc. These subclusters appear to be spatially coincident with previously known knots of molecular gas identified in groun…
We report the first results from an imaging program with the ACS camera on HST designed to measure the structural characteristics of a wide range of globular clusters in NGC 5128, the nearest giant elliptical galaxy. From 12 ACS/WFC fields, we have measured a total of 62 previously known globular clusters and have discovered 69 new high-probability cluster candidates not found in any previous work. We present magnitudes and color indices for all of these, along with rough measurements of their effective diameters and ellipticities. The luminosity distribution of this nearly-uncontaminated samp…
As an ongoing study of Magellanic Cloud PNe we have obtained UV spectra of 9 PNe in the SMC to measure their carbon abundances. The spectra have been acquired with ACS HRC/PR200L and SBC/PR130L. The ACS prisms give a reasonable resolution in the range of 1200 -- 2500 A to detect the C IV, C III], and C II] nebular emission, essential for chemical studies of the PNe. The carbon abundances of SMC PNe, together with those of the LMC previously determined with STIS spectroscopy, will allow a comparative study of nebular enrichment and provide the basis for comparison with stellar evolution models …
We have used the Advanced Camera for Surveys on board the Hubble Space Telescope to obtain deep photometry of the NGC 300 spiral galaxy in the Sculptor group. The results have been used to derive an accurate distance determination based on the Tip of the Red Giant Branch distance estimator. Both edge-detection and maximum likelihood methods have been applied, to derive a distance modulus (m-M)_0=26.30 +/- 0.03 +/- 0.12 for edge-detection, and (m-M)_0=26.36 +/- 0.02 +/- 0.12 for maximum likelihood. These results are fully consistent with the recent distance estimate derived from near-IR photome…
We present a photometric analysis of the star clusters Lindsay 1, Kron 3, NGC339, NGC416, Lindsay 38, and NGC419 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), observed with the Hubble Space Telescope Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) in the F555W and F814W filters. Our color magnitude diagrams (CMDs) extend ~3.5 mag deeper than the main-sequence turnoff points, deeper than any previous data. Cluster ages were derived using three different isochrone models: Padova, Teramo, and Dartmouth, which are all available in the ACS photometric system. Fitting observed ridgelines for each cluster, we provide a hom…
Hubble Space Telescope V,I photometry of stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud Cluster NGC 1866 shows a well defined cluster main sequence down to V=25 mag, with little contamination from field or foreground stars. We use the main sequence fitting procedure to link the distance of NGC 1866 to the Hipparcos determination of the distance for the Hyades MS stars, making use of evolutionary prescriptions to allow for differences in the chemical composition. On this basis we find a true distance modulus for NGC 1866 of 18.35 +/- 0.05 mag. If the cluster is assumed to lie in the LMC plane then the LMC…
We report the discovery of an extraordinary number of pre-main sequence (PMS) stars in the vicinity of the stellar association LH 95 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Using the {\em Advanced Camera for Surveys} on-board the {\em Hubble} Space Telescope in wide-field mode we obtained deep high-resolution imaging of the main body of the association and of a nearby representative LMC background field. These observations allowed us to construct the color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the association in unprecedented detail, and to decontaminate the CMD for the average LMC stellar population. The m…
We present internal surface-brightness profiles, based on HST/ACS imaging in the F606W bandpass, for 131 globular cluster (GC) candidates with luminosities 10^4 - 3 x 10^6 solar, in the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 5128. Several structural models are fit to the profile of each cluster and combined with mass-to-light ratios from population-synthesis models, to derive a catalogue of fundamental structural and dynamical parameters parallel in form to the catalogues recently produced by McLaughlin & van der Marel and Barmby et al. for GCs and massive young star clusters in Local Group galaxies. As …
Recent observations of globular clusters (GCs) in intermediate-age (2-4 Gyr old), early-type merger remnants have provided the hitherto `missing link' between young merger remnants and `normal' elliptical galaxies in the form of a GC subsystem with colors and luminosities consistent with population synthesis model predictions for those ages and ~solar metallicity. Here we present new, deep observations of the GC system of the intermediate-age merger remnant NGC 1316, using the ACS camera aboard Hubble Space Telescope, which allowed us to create luminosity functions (LFs) as a function of galac…
We have carried out Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 F160BW, F555W and F656N imaging of four young populous clusters: NGC 330 in the Small Magellanic Cloud and NGC 1818, NGC 2004 and NGC 2100 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We report photometric results for these four clusters, including identification using photometric colours of the cluster Be star population. We present theoretical WFPC2 and broad band colours and bolometric corrections for LMC and SMC metallicities. The use of the far-UV F160BW filter enables accurate determination of the effective temperatures for stars in the vicinity of the…
We determine the age, metallicity and initial mass function of three clusters, namely NGC 265, K~29, NGC 290, located in the main body of the Small Magellanic Cloud. In addition, we derive the history of star formation in the companion fields. We make use of ACS/WFC HST archive data. For the clusters, the age and metallicity are derived fitting the integrated luminosity function with single synthetic stellar population by means of the $χ^2$ minimization. For the companion fields, the history of star formation is derived using the $χ^2$ minimization together with the downhill-simplex method. For…
We present colour-magnitude diagrams for two rich (~10^4 Msun) Large Magellanic Cloud star clusters with ages ~10^7 years, constructed from optical and near-infrared data obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. These data are part of an HST project to study LMC clusters with a range of ages. In this paper we investigate the massive star content of the young clusters, and determine the cluster ages and metallicities, paying particular attention to Be star and blue straggler populations and evidence of age spreads. We compare our data to detailed stellar population simulations to investigate t…
Asymmetry is a common trait in spiral galaxies and is particularly frequent among Magellanic spirals. To explore how morphological and kinematic asymmetry are affected by companion galaxies, we analyze neutral hydrogen observations of the interacting Magellanic spirals NGC 4618 and 4625. The analysis of the H I distribution revealed that about 10% of the total H I mass of NGC 4618 resides in a looping tidal structure that appears to wrap all the way around the galaxy. Through calculations based on derived H I profiles, we show that NGC 4618 and 4625 are no more asymmetric than non-interacting …
Multi-fibre emission-line spectrophotometry of 33 H II regions and 3 diffuse interstellar medium positions are presented for the barred Magellanic galaxy NGC 1313. The H II regions show a fairly narrow range of thermal conditions characteristic of high excitation nebular gas. Electron temperature was directly determined in four of the H II regions. The global O/H abundance distribution appears very flat across the disk at 12 + log O/H = 8.4 +/- 0.1, with possibly the bar regions having abundances higher by 0.2 dex than the outer disc. NGC 1313 is the highest mass barred galaxy known not to hav…
We present observations for three star clusters, Kron 11, Kron 63 and NGC 121, in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We have studied their structure and derived their fundamental parameters by means of their luminosity functions, their color magnitude diagrams and the Padova suite of isochrones. NGC 121 is a well studied object, for which we confirm previous evidence about its old age and low metal content, and have found that it is undergoing mass segregation. Kron 11 and Kron 63 are poorly populated clusters which had never been studied so far. Kron 11 is several gigayears younger than NGC 121, whi…
We present the results of our investigation of the intermediate-age star cluster BS 90, located in the vicinity of the HII region N 66 in the SMC, observed with HST/ACS. The high-resolution data provide a unique opportunity for a very detailed photometric study performed on one of the rare intermediate-age rich SMC clusters. The complete set of observations is centered on the association NGC 346 and contains almost 100,000 stars down to V ~28 mag. In this study we focus on the northern part of the region, which covers almost the whole stellar content of BS 90. We construct its stellar surface …
We present new observations of 470 stars using the Fibre Large Array Multi-Element Spectrograph (FLAMES) instrument in fields centered on the clusters NGC 330 and NGC 346 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), and NGC 2004 and the N11 region in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). A further 14 stars were observed in the N11 and NGC 330 fields using the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) for a separate programme. Spectral classifications and stellar radial velocities are given for each target, with careful attention to checks for binarity. In particular we have investigated previousl…
The color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the intermediate-age Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) star cluster NGC 2154 and its adjacent field, has been analyzed using Padova stellar models to determine the cluster's fundamental parameters and its Star Formation History (SFH). Deep $BR$ CCD photometry, together with synthetic CMDs and Integrated Luminosity Functions (ILFs), has allowed us to infer that the cluster experienced an extended star formation period of about 1.2 Gyrs, which began approximately 2.3 Gyr and ended 1.1 Gyr ago. The physical reality of such a prolonged period of star formation is ho…
We present broad-band infrared photometry for 52 late-type supergiants in the young Magellanic Clouds clusters NGC 330, NGC 1818, NGC 2004 and NGC 2100. Standard models are seen to differ in the temperature they predict for the red supergiant population on the order of 300K. It appears that these differences most probably due to the calibration of the mixing-length parameter, $α_{P}$, in the outermost layers of the stellar envelope. Due to the apparent model dependent nature of $α_{P}$ we do not quantitatively compare $α_{P}$ between models. Qualitatively, we find that $α_{P}$ decreases with i…
We present CCD photometric and mass function study of 9 young Large Magellanic Cloud star clusters namely NGC 1767, NGC 1994, NGC 2002, NGC 2003, NGC 2006, SL 538, NGC 2011, NGC 2098 and NGC 2136. The BVRI data reaching down to V ~ 21 mag, are collected from 3.5-meter NTT/EFOSC2 in sub-arcsec seeing conditions. For NGC 1767, NGC 1994, NGC 2002, NGC 2003, NGC 2011 and NGC 2136, broad band photometric CCD data are presented for the first time. Seven of the 9 clusters have ages between 16 to 25 Myr while remaining two clusters have ages $32\pm4$ Myr (NGC 2098) and $90\pm10$ Myr (NGC 2136). For 7 …
We present the results of our investigation on the phenomenon of mass segregation in young star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. HST/WFPC2 observations on NGC 1818, NGC 2004 & NGC 2100 in the Large Magellanic Cloud and NGC 330 in the Small Magellanic Cloud have been used for the application of diagnostic tools for mass segregation: i) the radial density profiles of the clusters for various mass groups and ii) their mass functions (MFs) at various radii around their centres. All four clusters are found to be mass segregated, but each one in a different manner. Specifically not all the cluster…
As first Paper of a series devoted to study the old stellar population in clusters and fields in the Small Magellanic Cloud, we present deep observations of NGC121 in the F555W and F814W filters, obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. The resulting color-magnitude diagram reaches ~3.5 mag below the main-sequence turn-off; deeper than any previous data. We derive the age of NGC121 using both absolute and relative age-dating methods. Fitting isochrones in the ACS photometric system to the observed ridge line of NGC121, gives ages of 11.8 +- 0.5 Gyr (Teramo),…
We present {\it Hubble Space Telescope} {\it V,I} photometry of the central region of the LMC cluster NGC 1866, reaching magnitudes as faint as V=27 mag. We find evidence that the cluster luminosity function shows a strong dependence on the distance from the cluster center, with a clear deficiency of low luminosity stars in the inner region. We discuss a {\it global} cluster luminosity function as obtained from stars in all the investigated region, which appears in impressive agreement with the prediction from a Salpeter mass distribution. We also revisit the use of NGC 1866 as a probe for det…
Johnson {\it BV} CCD observations have been made of the young Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC~2214 and a nearby field using the Anglo-Australian Telescope. It has been suggested in the literature that this elliptical cluster is actually two clusters in the process of merging. No evidence is found from profile fitting or the colour--magnitude diagrams to support this contention. Completeness factors are estimated for the CCD frames. These values are used in conjunction with luminosity functions to estimate the initial mass function (IMF) for NGC~2214. A power law is assumed for the IMF, with…
We present our analysis of archival Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) observations in F450W (~B) and F555W (~V) of the intermediate- age populous star clusters NGC 121, NGC 339, NGC 361, NGC 416, and Kron 3 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We use published photometry of two other SMC populous star clusters, Lindsay 1 and Lindsay 113, to investigate the age sequence of these seven populous star clusters in order to improve our understanding of the formation chronology of the SMC. We analyzed the V vs (B-V) and M_V vs (B-V)_0 color-magnitude diagrams of these populous Sm…
We discuss the young population of stars and clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. We present the discovery of pre-main sequence candidates in the nebula N~11 in the Large Magellanic Clouds using HST ACS photometry. The comparison of the Colour-Magnitude diagram with pre-main sequence tracks and the presence of Spitzer objects YSO I and II suggest that the star formation has been active for a long period in the region, from a few $10^5$ yrs to several Myr ago
We present photometry with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) of stars in the Magellanic starburst galaxy NGC 4449. The galaxy has been imaged in the F435W (B), F555W (V) and F814W (I) broad-band filters, and in the F658N (Halpha) narrow-band filter. Our photometry includes ~300,000 objects in the (B, V) color-magnitude diagram (CMD) down to V < 28, and ~400,000 objects in the (V, I) CMD, down to I < 27 . A subsample of ~200,000 stars has been photometrized in all the three bands simultaneously. The features observed in the CMDs imply a variety of stellar…
Spectrophotometry in the 3400-7400 range is presented for 13 areas of the brightest H II region in the SMC: NGC 346. The observations were obtained at CTIO with the 4-m telescope. Based on these observations its chemical composition is derived. The helium and oxygen abundances by mass are given by: Y(SMC)=0.2405+-0.0018 and O(SMC)=0.00171+-0.00025. From models and observations of irregular and blue compact galaxies it is found that dY/dO=3.5+-0.9 and consequently that the primordial helium abundance by mass is given by: Yp=0.2345+-0.0026 (1-sigma). This result is compared with values derived f…
We present spectroscopic abundance analyses of three main-sequence B stars in the young Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC 2004. All three targets have projected rotational velocities around 130 km/s. Techniques are presented that allow the derivation of stellar parameters and chemical abundances in spite of these high v sin i values. Together with previous analyses of stars in this cluster, we find no evidence among the main-sequence stars for effects due to rotational mixing up to v sin i around 130 km/s. Unless the equatorial rotational velocities are significantly larger than the v sin i v…
We use high-resolution {\sl Hubble Space Telescope} imaging observations of the young ($\sim 15-25$ Myr-old) star cluster NGC 1818 in the Large Magellanic Cloud to derive an estimate for the binary fraction of F stars ($1.3 < M_\star/M_\odot < 1.6$). This study provides the strongest constraints yet on the binary fraction in a young star cluster in a low-metallicity environment (${[Fe/H]} \sim -0.4$ dex). Employing artificial-star tests, we develop a simple method that can efficiently measure the probabilities of stellar blends and superpositions from the observed stellar catalog. We create sy…
Using the HST Wide Field Camera of the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), we have obtained deep (V,I) photometry of an outer-halo field in NGC 5128, to a limiting magnitude of I~29. Our photometry directly reveals the core helium-burning stellar population (the ``red clump'' or horizontal branch) in a giant E/S0 galaxy for the first time. The color-magnitude diagram displays a very wide red giant branch (RGB), an asymptotic giant branch (AGB) bump, and the red clump; no noticeable population of blue HB stars is present, confirming previous suggestions that old, very metal-poor population is no…
We present the results of a search for Be stars in six fields centered on the young clusters NGC 330 and NGC 346 in the SMC, and NGC 1818, NGC 1948, NGC 2004 and NGC 2100 in the LMC. Be stars were identified by differencing R band and narrow-band H$α$ CCD images. Our comparatively large images provide substantial Be star populations both within the clusters and in their surrounding fields. Magnitudes, positions and finding charts are given for the 224 Be stars found. The fraction of Be stars to normal B stars within each cluster is found to vary significantly although the average ratio is simi…
The presence of an anomalously large population of Be stars in the young cluster NGC 330 in the SMC has been noted by Feast (1972), Bessell & Wood (1993), Grebel (1996) and most recently Keller et al. (1998). We present results from follow-up medium resolution spectra of the bright Be stars identified in Keller et al. (1998) and in the spectroscopic study of Mazzali et al. (1996). We find that the study of Mazzali et al. has overestimated the number of Be stars within NGC 330. Many of the bright B type stars identified by Mazzali et al. as Be stars show no signs of emission after correction fo…
We report the serendipitous discovery of a peculiar main sequence in archived Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 observations of the young star cluster NGC 2011 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The bright part of this main sequence exhibits a prominent double, fork-like feature, as if it consists of twin main sequences, one of them being redder. The color-magnitude diagram, constructed from the stars found in the only available WFPC2 field of the cluster, is used to distinguish the stars according to their membership to each of these sequences and to study their spatial distribution. We find that ther…
In HST Cycles 11 and 13 we obtained two epochs of ACS/HRC data for fields in the Magellanic Clouds centered on background quasars. We used these data to determine the proper motions of the LMC and SMC to better than 5% and 15% respectively. The results had a number of unexpected implications for the Milky Way-LMC-SMC system. The implied three-dimensional velocities were larger than previously believed and close to the escape velocity in a standard 10^12 solar mass Milky Way dark halo, implying that the Clouds may be on their first passage. Also, the relative velocity between the LMC and SMC wa…
We have used deep high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope ACS observations to image the cluster NGC 1978 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This high-quality photometric data set allowed us to confirm the high ellipticity (~0.30+-0.02) of this stellar system. The derived Color Magnitude Diagram allowed a detailed study of the main evolutionary sequences: in particular we have detected the so called Bump along the Red Giant Branch (at V_{555}=19.10+-0.10). This is the first detection of this feature in an intermediate-age cluster. Moreover the morphology of the evolutionary sequence and their popula…
We present evidence that the star-forming region NGC 346/N66 in the Small Magellanic Cloud is the product of hierarchical star formation, probably from more than one star formation event. We investigate the spatial distribution and clustering behavior of the pre-main sequence (PMS) stellar population in the region, using data obtained with Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys. By applying the nearest neighbor and minimum spanning tree methods on the rich sample of PMS stars previously discovered in the region we identify ten individual PMS clusters in the area and quantify thei…
We present Hubble Space Telescope ACS deep photometry of the intermediate-age globular cluster NGC 1783 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. By using this photometric dataset, we have determined the degree of ellipticity of the cluster ($ε$=0.14$\pm$0.03) and the radial density profile. This profile is well reproduced by a standard King model with an extended core (r_c=24.5'') and a low concentration (c=1.16), indicating that the cluster has not experienced the collapse of the core. We also derived the cluster age, by using the Pisa Evolutionary Library (PEL) isochrones, with three different amount …
We present our analysis of archival Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 observations in F555W (~V) and F450W (~B) of the intermediate-age populous star cluster NGC 416 in the Small Magellanic Cloud galaxy. We use published photometry of two other SMC populous star clusters, Lindsay 1 and Lindsay 113, to investigate the age sequence of these three star clusters. We estimate that these clusters have age ratios of age_NGC416/age_L1 ~= 0.73 +- 0.05 and age_L113/age_L1 ~= 0.52 +- 0.09, using an extrapolation of the d_(B-V) method (which uses the color difference between the red hor…
We present both low and high-dispersion abundance analyses of giants drawn from the zero proper motion sample near NGC 121. For the sample of 35 stars, the mean metallicity of the SMC field near NGC 121 is [Fe/H]=-1.3 with a real dispersion of 0.4 dex. The most metal-rich stars are at -0.5 dex and the most metal-poor stars at -2.1 dex. The velocity dispersion of the sample is 25 km/s. The dispersion of various kinematic samples in the SMC is independent of age. The RGB colors are consistent with Galactic globular clusters of similar metallicity. The field population, however, does not have an …
We present the CMD from deep HST imaging in the globular cluster NGC 6397. The ACS was used for 126 orbits to image a single field in two colors (F814W, F606W) 5 arcmin SE of the cluster center. The field observed overlaps that of archival WFPC2 data from 1994 and 1997 which were used to proper motion (PM) clean the data. Applying the PM corrections produces a remarkably clean CMD which reveals a number of features never seen before in a globular cluster CMD. In our field, the main sequence stars appeared to terminate close to the location in the CMD of the hydrogen-burning limit predicted by …
(ABRIDGED) The ACS camera on board the Hubble Space Telescope has been used to obtain deep images of the giant elliptical galaxy NGC 3610, a well-established dissipative galaxy merger remnant. These observations supersede previous WFPC2 images which revealed the presence of a population of metal-rich globular clusters (GCs) of intermediate age (~1.5-4 Gyr). We detect a total of 580 GC candidates, 46% more than from the previous WFPC2 images. The new photometry strengthens the significance of the previously found bimodality of the color distribution of GCs. Peak colors in V-I are 0.93 +/-0.01 a…
The discovery of multiple MSs in NGC2808 and Omega Centauri, and multiple SGBs in NGC1851 and NGC6388 has challenged the long-held paradigm that GCs consist of simple stellar populations. This picture has been further complicated by recent studies of the LMC intermediate-age clusters, where the MSTO was found to be bimodal or broadened. We have undertaken a study of archival HST images of LMC and SMC clusters with the aim of measuring the frequency of clusters with evidence of multiple or prolonged star formation events and determining their main properties. In this paper, we analyse the CMD o…
We present an analysis of the X-ray properties of the Magellanic-type galaxy NGC 55 based on two contiguous XMM-Newton observations. We detect a total of 137 X-ray sources in the field of view, 42 of which are located within the optical confines of the galaxy. On the basis of X-ray colour classification and after correcting for background objects, we conclude that our source sample includes ~ 20 X-ray binaries, 5 supernova remnants and 7 very soft sources (including 2 good candidate supersoft sources) associated with NGC 55. Detailed spectral and timing analysis was carried out on 4 of the bri…
Spectroscopic observations of hot stars belonging to the young cluster LMC-NGC 2004 and its surrounding region were carried out with the VLT-GIRAFFE facilities in MEDUSA mode. We determine fundamental parameters (Teff, logg, vsini, and radial velocity), for all B and Be stars in the sample thanks to a code developed in our group. The effect of fast rotation (stellar flattening and gravitational darkening) are taken into account in this study. We also determine the age of observed clusters. We compare the mean vsini obtained for field and cluster B and Be stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LM…
We present chemical abundances for four main sequence B stars in the young cluster NGC 2004 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Apart from H II regions, unevolved OB-type stars are currently the only accessible source of present-day CNO abundances for the MCs not altered by stellar evolution. Using UVES on the VLT, we obtained spectra of sufficient resolution (R = 20 000) and signal-to-noise (S/N > 100) to derive abundances for a variety of elements (He, C, N, O, Mg and Si) with NLTE line formation. This study doubles the number of main sequence B stars in the LMC with detailed chemical abund…
We have used a combination of high resolution (HST ACS-HRC, ACS-WFC, and WFPC2) and wide-field (ESO-WFI) observations of the galactic globular cluster NGC 6388 to derive its center of gravity, projected density profile, and central surface brightness profile. While the overall projected profiles are well fit by a King model with intermediate concentration (c=1.8) and sizable core radius (rc=7"), a significant power law (with slope α=-0.2) deviation from a flat core behavior has been detected within the inner 1 arcsecond. These properties suggest the presence of a central intermediate mass blac…
In the third part of our photometric study of the star-forming region NGC 346/N~66 and its surrounding field in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), we focus on the large number of low-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) stars revealed by the Hubble Space Telescope Observations with the Advanced Camera for Surveys. We investigate the origin of the observed broadening of the pre-main sequence population in the $V-I$, $V$ CMD. The most likely explanations are either the presence of differential reddening or an age spread among the young stars. Assuming the latter, simulations indicate that we cannot exclu…
We present N-body models to complement deep imaging of the metal-poor core-collapsed cluster NGC6397 obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. All simulations include stellar and binary evolution in-step with the stellar dynamics and account for the tidal field of the Galaxy. We focus on the results of a simulation that began with 100000 objects (stars and binaries), 5% primordial binaries and Population II metallicity. After 16 Gyr of evolution the model cluster has about 20% of the stars remaining and has reached core-collapse. We compare the color-magnitude diagrams of the model at this age…
We present the first results of a large ACS Survey of Galactic globular clusters. This Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Treasury project is designed to obtain photometry with S/N > ~10 for main sequence stars with masses > ~0.2Msun in a sample of globulars using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) Wide Field Channel. Here we focus on clusters without previous HST imaging data. These include NGC 5466, 6779, 5053, 6144, Palomar 2, E 3, Lynga 7, Palomar 1, and NGC 6366. Our CMDs extend reliably from the horizontal branch to as much as seven magnitudes fainter than the main sequence turnoff and repr…
We present the results of mid-resolution spectroscopy in the LiI 6708 AA spectral region of Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars belonging to young open clusters of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Most stars belong to the clusters NGC 1866 and NGC 2031, which have an age of ~ 150 Myr. Lithium lines of different strength are detected in the spectra of stars evolving along the AGB, not always in agreement with theoretical predictions. We also analyze the infrared luminosities (ISOCAM data) of these stars, to discuss if their evolutionary phase precedes or follows the lithium production stage.
We present Spitzer/IRAC photometry on the star-forming HII region N 90, related to the young stellar association NGC 602 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Our photometry revealed bright mid-infrared sources, which we classify with the use of a scheme based on templates and models of red sources in the Milky Way, and criteria recently developed from the Spitzer Survey of the SMC for the selection of candidate Young Stellar Objects (YSOs). We detected 57 sources in all four IRAC channels in a 6.2' x 4.8' field-of-view centered on N 90; 22 of these sources are classified as candidate YSOs. We compar…
We show the results of deep V and I HST photometry of 6 rich star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud with different ages and metallicities. The number of stars with measured magnitudes in each cluster varies from about 3000 to 10000. We build stellar density and surface brightness profiles for the clusters and extract half-light radii and other structural parameters for each. We also obtain luminosity functions, Phi (Mv), down to Mv ~ 6 (m/msun > 0.6), and investigate their dependence with distance from the cluster centre well beyond their half-light radius. In all clusters we find a syste…
We report on HST/ACS photometry of the rich intermediate-age star cluster NGC 1846 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, which clearly reveals the presence of a double main sequence turn-off in this object. Despite this, the main sequence, sub-giant branch, and red giant branch are all narrow and well-defined, and the red clump is compact. We examine the spatial distribution of turn-off stars and demonstrate that all belong to NGC 1846 rather than to any field star population. In addition, the spatial distributions of the two sets of turn-off stars may exhibit different central concentrations and som…
We review the complications involved in the conversion of stellar luminosities into masses and apply a range of mass-to-luminosity relations to our Hubble Space Telescope observations of the young LMC star clusters NGC 1805 and NGC 1818. Both the radial dependence of the mass function (MF) and the dependence of the cluster core radii on mass indicate clear mass segregation in both clusters at radii r <= 20-30'', for masses in excess of ~1.6-2.5 Msun. This result does not depend on the mass range used to fit the slopes or the metallicity assumed. It is clear that the cluster MFs, at any radius,…
Using Hubble Space Telescope (HST) observations of the globular cluster NGC6397, we constrain the cluster's binary fraction. The observations consist of two fields: the primary science field, a single ACS pointing centered approximately 5' from the cluster center; and the parallel field, a single WFPC2 field centered on the cluster center. Using the exquisite photometric precision of these observations, we determine the binary fraction in these regions of the cluster by examining stars lying off the main sequence. The binary fraction is constrained to be 0.012 +/- 0.004 in the ACS field, and t…
H2 column densities towards CO clouds in the LMC and SMC are estimated from their far-infrared surface brightness and HI column density. N(H2)/I(CO) conversion factors are X(LMC) = 1.3 and X(SMC) = 12 (unit: 10**21 mol cm**-2 (K km/s)**-1). LMC and SMC contain total (warm) H2 masses of 1.0 and 0.75 x 10**8 M(sun) respectively. Similar local H2/HI mass ratios are found in the magellanic irregulars NGC 1569 (X = 16), NGC 55, 4214 and 6822 (X = 3--6) and in NGC 4449 as well as the extragalactic HII regions NGC 604, 595 and 5461 in M 33 and M 101 (X = 1--2). The CO--H2 conversion factor X depends …
(Abridged) We present the results of photometric measurements from images of the LMC globular clusters NGC 1928, 1939 and Reticulum taken with ACS on HST. F555W and F814W exposures result in high accuracy CMDs for these three clusters. This is the first time that CMDs for NGC 1928 and 1939 have been published. All three clusters possess CMDs with features indicating them to be >10 Gyr old, including main sequence turn-offs at V~23 and well populated HBs. We use the CMDs to obtain metallicity and reddening estimates for each cluster. NGC 1939 is a metal poor cluster, with [Fe/H] = -2.10 +/- 0.1…
