We present evidence that the star-forming region NGC 346/N66 in the Small Magellanic Cloud is the product of hierarchical star formation, probably from more than one star formation event. We investigate the spatial distribution and clustering behavior of the pre-main sequence (PMS) stellar population in the region, using data obtained with Hubble Space Telescope's Advanced Camera for Surveys. By applying the nearest neighbor and minimum spanning tree methods on the rich sample of PMS stars previously discovered in the region we identify ten individual PMS clusters in the area and quantify their structures. The clusters show a wide range of morphologies from hierarchical multi-peak configurations to centrally condensed clusters. However, only about 40 per cent of the PMS stars belong to the identified clusters. The central association NGC 346 is identified as the largest stellar concentration, which cannot be resolved into subclusters. Several PMS clusters are aligned along filaments of higher stellar density pointing away from the central part of the region. The PMS density peaks in the association coincide with the peaks of [OIII] and 8 micron emission. While more massive stars seem to be concentrated in the central association when considering the entire area, we find no evidence for mass segregation within the system itself.
Hubble Space Telescope V,I photometry of stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud Cluster NGC 1866 shows a well defined cluster main sequence down to V=25 mag, with little contamination from field or foreground stars. We use the main sequence fitting procedure to link the distance of NGC 1866 to the Hipparcos determination of the distance for the Hyades MS stars, making use of evolutionary prescriptions to allow for differences in the chemical composition. On this basis we find a true distance modulus for NGC 1866 of 18.35 +/- 0.05 mag. If the cluster is assumed to lie in the LMC plane then the LMC…
We have carried out Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 F160BW, F555W and F656N imaging of four young populous clusters: NGC 330 in the Small Magellanic Cloud and NGC 1818, NGC 2004 and NGC 2100 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. We report photometric results for these four clusters, including identification using photometric colours of the cluster Be star population. We present theoretical WFPC2 and broad band colours and bolometric corrections for LMC and SMC metallicities. The use of the far-UV F160BW filter enables accurate determination of the effective temperatures for stars in the vicinity of the…
We present colour-magnitude diagrams for two rich (~10^4 Msun) Large Magellanic Cloud star clusters with ages ~10^7 years, constructed from optical and near-infrared data obtained with the Hubble Space Telescope. These data are part of an HST project to study LMC clusters with a range of ages. In this paper we investigate the massive star content of the young clusters, and determine the cluster ages and metallicities, paying particular attention to Be star and blue straggler populations and evidence of age spreads. We compare our data to detailed stellar population simulations to investigate t…
Asymmetry is a common trait in spiral galaxies and is particularly frequent among Magellanic spirals. To explore how morphological and kinematic asymmetry are affected by companion galaxies, we analyze neutral hydrogen observations of the interacting Magellanic spirals NGC 4618 and 4625. The analysis of the H I distribution revealed that about 10% of the total H I mass of NGC 4618 resides in a looping tidal structure that appears to wrap all the way around the galaxy. Through calculations based on derived H I profiles, we show that NGC 4618 and 4625 are no more asymmetric than non-interacting …
Multi-fibre emission-line spectrophotometry of 33 H II regions and 3 diffuse interstellar medium positions are presented for the barred Magellanic galaxy NGC 1313. The H II regions show a fairly narrow range of thermal conditions characteristic of high excitation nebular gas. Electron temperature was directly determined in four of the H II regions. The global O/H abundance distribution appears very flat across the disk at 12 + log O/H = 8.4 +/- 0.1, with possibly the bar regions having abundances higher by 0.2 dex than the outer disc. NGC 1313 is the highest mass barred galaxy known not to hav…
We present observations for three star clusters, Kron 11, Kron 63 and NGC 121, in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We have studied their structure and derived their fundamental parameters by means of their luminosity functions, their color magnitude diagrams and the Padova suite of isochrones. NGC 121 is a well studied object, for which we confirm previous evidence about its old age and low metal content, and have found that it is undergoing mass segregation. Kron 11 and Kron 63 are poorly populated clusters which had never been studied so far. Kron 11 is several gigayears younger than NGC 121, whi…
We present new observations of 470 stars using the Fibre Large Array Multi-Element Spectrograph (FLAMES) instrument in fields centered on the clusters NGC 330 and NGC 346 in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), and NGC 2004 and the N11 region in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). A further 14 stars were observed in the N11 and NGC 330 fields using the Ultraviolet and Visual Echelle Spectrograph (UVES) for a separate programme. Spectral classifications and stellar radial velocities are given for each target, with careful attention to checks for binarity. In particular we have investigated previousl…
The color-magnitude diagram (CMD) of the intermediate-age Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) star cluster NGC 2154 and its adjacent field, has been analyzed using Padova stellar models to determine the cluster's fundamental parameters and its Star Formation History (SFH). Deep $BR$ CCD photometry, together with synthetic CMDs and Integrated Luminosity Functions (ILFs), has allowed us to infer that the cluster experienced an extended star formation period of about 1.2 Gyrs, which began approximately 2.3 Gyr and ended 1.1 Gyr ago. The physical reality of such a prolonged period of star formation is ho…
We present broad-band infrared photometry for 52 late-type supergiants in the young Magellanic Clouds clusters NGC 330, NGC 1818, NGC 2004 and NGC 2100. Standard models are seen to differ in the temperature they predict for the red supergiant population on the order of 300K. It appears that these differences most probably due to the calibration of the mixing-length parameter, $α_{P}$, in the outermost layers of the stellar envelope. Due to the apparent model dependent nature of $α_{P}$ we do not quantitatively compare $α_{P}$ between models. Qualitatively, we find that $α_{P}$ decreases with i…
We present CCD photometric and mass function study of 9 young Large Magellanic Cloud star clusters namely NGC 1767, NGC 1994, NGC 2002, NGC 2003, NGC 2006, SL 538, NGC 2011, NGC 2098 and NGC 2136. The BVRI data reaching down to V ~ 21 mag, are collected from 3.5-meter NTT/EFOSC2 in sub-arcsec seeing conditions. For NGC 1767, NGC 1994, NGC 2002, NGC 2003, NGC 2011 and NGC 2136, broad band photometric CCD data are presented for the first time. Seven of the 9 clusters have ages between 16 to 25 Myr while remaining two clusters have ages $32\pm4$ Myr (NGC 2098) and $90\pm10$ Myr (NGC 2136). For 7 …
We present the results of our investigation on the phenomenon of mass segregation in young star clusters in the Magellanic Clouds. HST/WFPC2 observations on NGC 1818, NGC 2004 & NGC 2100 in the Large Magellanic Cloud and NGC 330 in the Small Magellanic Cloud have been used for the application of diagnostic tools for mass segregation: i) the radial density profiles of the clusters for various mass groups and ii) their mass functions (MFs) at various radii around their centres. All four clusters are found to be mass segregated, but each one in a different manner. Specifically not all the cluster…
We present {\it Hubble Space Telescope} {\it V,I} photometry of the central region of the LMC cluster NGC 1866, reaching magnitudes as faint as V=27 mag. We find evidence that the cluster luminosity function shows a strong dependence on the distance from the cluster center, with a clear deficiency of low luminosity stars in the inner region. We discuss a {\it global} cluster luminosity function as obtained from stars in all the investigated region, which appears in impressive agreement with the prediction from a Salpeter mass distribution. We also revisit the use of NGC 1866 as a probe for det…
Johnson {\it BV} CCD observations have been made of the young Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC~2214 and a nearby field using the Anglo-Australian Telescope. It has been suggested in the literature that this elliptical cluster is actually two clusters in the process of merging. No evidence is found from profile fitting or the colour--magnitude diagrams to support this contention. Completeness factors are estimated for the CCD frames. These values are used in conjunction with luminosity functions to estimate the initial mass function (IMF) for NGC~2214. A power law is assumed for the IMF, with…
We present our analysis of archival Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 (WFPC2) observations in F450W (~B) and F555W (~V) of the intermediate- age populous star clusters NGC 121, NGC 339, NGC 361, NGC 416, and Kron 3 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. We use published photometry of two other SMC populous star clusters, Lindsay 1 and Lindsay 113, to investigate the age sequence of these seven populous star clusters in order to improve our understanding of the formation chronology of the SMC. We analyzed the V vs (B-V) and M_V vs (B-V)_0 color-magnitude diagrams of these populous Sm…
Spectrophotometry in the 3400-7400 range is presented for 13 areas of the brightest H II region in the SMC: NGC 346. The observations were obtained at CTIO with the 4-m telescope. Based on these observations its chemical composition is derived. The helium and oxygen abundances by mass are given by: Y(SMC)=0.2405+-0.0018 and O(SMC)=0.00171+-0.00025. From models and observations of irregular and blue compact galaxies it is found that dY/dO=3.5+-0.9 and consequently that the primordial helium abundance by mass is given by: Yp=0.2345+-0.0026 (1-sigma). This result is compared with values derived f…
We present spectroscopic abundance analyses of three main-sequence B stars in the young Large Magellanic Cloud cluster NGC 2004. All three targets have projected rotational velocities around 130 km/s. Techniques are presented that allow the derivation of stellar parameters and chemical abundances in spite of these high v sin i values. Together with previous analyses of stars in this cluster, we find no evidence among the main-sequence stars for effects due to rotational mixing up to v sin i around 130 km/s. Unless the equatorial rotational velocities are significantly larger than the v sin i v…
We use high-resolution {\sl Hubble Space Telescope} imaging observations of the young ($\sim 15-25$ Myr-old) star cluster NGC 1818 in the Large Magellanic Cloud to derive an estimate for the binary fraction of F stars ($1.3 < M_\star/M_\odot < 1.6$). This study provides the strongest constraints yet on the binary fraction in a young star cluster in a low-metallicity environment (${[Fe/H]} \sim -0.4$ dex). Employing artificial-star tests, we develop a simple method that can efficiently measure the probabilities of stellar blends and superpositions from the observed stellar catalog. We create sy…
We present the results of a search for Be stars in six fields centered on the young clusters NGC 330 and NGC 346 in the SMC, and NGC 1818, NGC 1948, NGC 2004 and NGC 2100 in the LMC. Be stars were identified by differencing R band and narrow-band H$α$ CCD images. Our comparatively large images provide substantial Be star populations both within the clusters and in their surrounding fields. Magnitudes, positions and finding charts are given for the 224 Be stars found. The fraction of Be stars to normal B stars within each cluster is found to vary significantly although the average ratio is simi…
The presence of an anomalously large population of Be stars in the young cluster NGC 330 in the SMC has been noted by Feast (1972), Bessell & Wood (1993), Grebel (1996) and most recently Keller et al. (1998). We present results from follow-up medium resolution spectra of the bright Be stars identified in Keller et al. (1998) and in the spectroscopic study of Mazzali et al. (1996). We find that the study of Mazzali et al. has overestimated the number of Be stars within NGC 330. Many of the bright B type stars identified by Mazzali et al. as Be stars show no signs of emission after correction fo…
We report the serendipitous discovery of a peculiar main sequence in archived Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 observations of the young star cluster NGC 2011 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The bright part of this main sequence exhibits a prominent double, fork-like feature, as if it consists of twin main sequences, one of them being redder. The color-magnitude diagram, constructed from the stars found in the only available WFPC2 field of the cluster, is used to distinguish the stars according to their membership to each of these sequences and to study their spatial distribution. We find that ther…
We have used deep high-resolution Hubble Space Telescope ACS observations to image the cluster NGC 1978 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This high-quality photometric data set allowed us to confirm the high ellipticity (~0.30+-0.02) of this stellar system. The derived Color Magnitude Diagram allowed a detailed study of the main evolutionary sequences: in particular we have detected the so called Bump along the Red Giant Branch (at V_{555}=19.10+-0.10). This is the first detection of this feature in an intermediate-age cluster. Moreover the morphology of the evolutionary sequence and their popula…
We present Hubble Space Telescope ACS deep photometry of the intermediate-age globular cluster NGC 1783 in the Large Magellanic Cloud. By using this photometric dataset, we have determined the degree of ellipticity of the cluster ($ε$=0.14$\pm$0.03) and the radial density profile. This profile is well reproduced by a standard King model with an extended core (r_c=24.5'') and a low concentration (c=1.16), indicating that the cluster has not experienced the collapse of the core. We also derived the cluster age, by using the Pisa Evolutionary Library (PEL) isochrones, with three different amount …
We present our analysis of archival Hubble Space Telescope Wide Field Planetary Camera 2 observations in F555W (~V) and F450W (~B) of the intermediate-age populous star cluster NGC 416 in the Small Magellanic Cloud galaxy. We use published photometry of two other SMC populous star clusters, Lindsay 1 and Lindsay 113, to investigate the age sequence of these three star clusters. We estimate that these clusters have age ratios of age_NGC416/age_L1 ~= 0.73 +- 0.05 and age_L113/age_L1 ~= 0.52 +- 0.09, using an extrapolation of the d_(B-V) method (which uses the color difference between the red hor…
We present both low and high-dispersion abundance analyses of giants drawn from the zero proper motion sample near NGC 121. For the sample of 35 stars, the mean metallicity of the SMC field near NGC 121 is [Fe/H]=-1.3 with a real dispersion of 0.4 dex. The most metal-rich stars are at -0.5 dex and the most metal-poor stars at -2.1 dex. The velocity dispersion of the sample is 25 km/s. The dispersion of various kinematic samples in the SMC is independent of age. The RGB colors are consistent with Galactic globular clusters of similar metallicity. The field population, however, does not have an …
The discovery of multiple MSs in NGC2808 and Omega Centauri, and multiple SGBs in NGC1851 and NGC6388 has challenged the long-held paradigm that GCs consist of simple stellar populations. This picture has been further complicated by recent studies of the LMC intermediate-age clusters, where the MSTO was found to be bimodal or broadened. We have undertaken a study of archival HST images of LMC and SMC clusters with the aim of measuring the frequency of clusters with evidence of multiple or prolonged star formation events and determining their main properties. In this paper, we analyse the CMD o…
We present an analysis of the X-ray properties of the Magellanic-type galaxy NGC 55 based on two contiguous XMM-Newton observations. We detect a total of 137 X-ray sources in the field of view, 42 of which are located within the optical confines of the galaxy. On the basis of X-ray colour classification and after correcting for background objects, we conclude that our source sample includes ~ 20 X-ray binaries, 5 supernova remnants and 7 very soft sources (including 2 good candidate supersoft sources) associated with NGC 55. Detailed spectral and timing analysis was carried out on 4 of the bri…
Spectroscopic observations of hot stars belonging to the young cluster LMC-NGC 2004 and its surrounding region were carried out with the VLT-GIRAFFE facilities in MEDUSA mode. We determine fundamental parameters (Teff, logg, vsini, and radial velocity), for all B and Be stars in the sample thanks to a code developed in our group. The effect of fast rotation (stellar flattening and gravitational darkening) are taken into account in this study. We also determine the age of observed clusters. We compare the mean vsini obtained for field and cluster B and Be stars in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LM…
We present chemical abundances for four main sequence B stars in the young cluster NGC 2004 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Apart from H II regions, unevolved OB-type stars are currently the only accessible source of present-day CNO abundances for the MCs not altered by stellar evolution. Using UVES on the VLT, we obtained spectra of sufficient resolution (R = 20 000) and signal-to-noise (S/N > 100) to derive abundances for a variety of elements (He, C, N, O, Mg and Si) with NLTE line formation. This study doubles the number of main sequence B stars in the LMC with detailed chemical abund…
In the third part of our photometric study of the star-forming region NGC 346/N~66 and its surrounding field in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), we focus on the large number of low-mass pre-main sequence (PMS) stars revealed by the Hubble Space Telescope Observations with the Advanced Camera for Surveys. We investigate the origin of the observed broadening of the pre-main sequence population in the $V-I$, $V$ CMD. The most likely explanations are either the presence of differential reddening or an age spread among the young stars. Assuming the latter, simulations indicate that we cannot exclu…
We present the results of mid-resolution spectroscopy in the LiI 6708 AA spectral region of Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) stars belonging to young open clusters of the Large Magellanic Cloud. Most stars belong to the clusters NGC 1866 and NGC 2031, which have an age of ~ 150 Myr. Lithium lines of different strength are detected in the spectra of stars evolving along the AGB, not always in agreement with theoretical predictions. We also analyze the infrared luminosities (ISOCAM data) of these stars, to discuss if their evolutionary phase precedes or follows the lithium production stage.
We present Spitzer/IRAC photometry on the star-forming HII region N 90, related to the young stellar association NGC 602 in the Small Magellanic Cloud. Our photometry revealed bright mid-infrared sources, which we classify with the use of a scheme based on templates and models of red sources in the Milky Way, and criteria recently developed from the Spitzer Survey of the SMC for the selection of candidate Young Stellar Objects (YSOs). We detected 57 sources in all four IRAC channels in a 6.2' x 4.8' field-of-view centered on N 90; 22 of these sources are classified as candidate YSOs. We compar…
We show the results of deep V and I HST photometry of 6 rich star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud with different ages and metallicities. The number of stars with measured magnitudes in each cluster varies from about 3000 to 10000. We build stellar density and surface brightness profiles for the clusters and extract half-light radii and other structural parameters for each. We also obtain luminosity functions, Phi (Mv), down to Mv ~ 6 (m/msun > 0.6), and investigate their dependence with distance from the cluster centre well beyond their half-light radius. In all clusters we find a syste…
We report on HST/ACS photometry of the rich intermediate-age star cluster NGC 1846 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, which clearly reveals the presence of a double main sequence turn-off in this object. Despite this, the main sequence, sub-giant branch, and red giant branch are all narrow and well-defined, and the red clump is compact. We examine the spatial distribution of turn-off stars and demonstrate that all belong to NGC 1846 rather than to any field star population. In addition, the spatial distributions of the two sets of turn-off stars may exhibit different central concentrations and som…
We review the complications involved in the conversion of stellar luminosities into masses and apply a range of mass-to-luminosity relations to our Hubble Space Telescope observations of the young LMC star clusters NGC 1805 and NGC 1818. Both the radial dependence of the mass function (MF) and the dependence of the cluster core radii on mass indicate clear mass segregation in both clusters at radii r <= 20-30'', for masses in excess of ~1.6-2.5 Msun. This result does not depend on the mass range used to fit the slopes or the metallicity assumed. It is clear that the cluster MFs, at any radius,…
H2 column densities towards CO clouds in the LMC and SMC are estimated from their far-infrared surface brightness and HI column density. N(H2)/I(CO) conversion factors are X(LMC) = 1.3 and X(SMC) = 12 (unit: 10**21 mol cm**-2 (K km/s)**-1). LMC and SMC contain total (warm) H2 masses of 1.0 and 0.75 x 10**8 M(sun) respectively. Similar local H2/HI mass ratios are found in the magellanic irregulars NGC 1569 (X = 16), NGC 55, 4214 and 6822 (X = 3--6) and in NGC 4449 as well as the extragalactic HII regions NGC 604, 595 and 5461 in M 33 and M 101 (X = 1--2). The CO--H2 conversion factor X depends …
We present a photometric study of the star-forming region NGC 346 and its surrounding field in the Small Magellanic Cloud, using data taken with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The data set contains both short and long exposures for increased dynamic range, and photometry was performed using the ACS module of the stellar photometry package DOLPHOT. We detected almost 100,000 stars over a magnitude range of V ~ 11 to V ~ 28 mag, including all stellar types from the most massive young stars to faint lower main sequence and pre-main sequence stars.…
(Abridged) We present the results of photometric measurements from images of the LMC globular clusters NGC 1928, 1939 and Reticulum taken with ACS on HST. F555W and F814W exposures result in high accuracy CMDs for these three clusters. This is the first time that CMDs for NGC 1928 and 1939 have been published. All three clusters possess CMDs with features indicating them to be >10 Gyr old, including main sequence turn-offs at V~23 and well populated HBs. We use the CMDs to obtain metallicity and reddening estimates for each cluster. NGC 1939 is a metal poor cluster, with [Fe/H] = -2.10 +/- 0.1…
We present our photometric study of the stellar association NGC 602 in the wing of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The data were taken in the filters F555W and F814W using the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) on-board the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). Photometry was performed using the ACS module of the stellar photometry package DOLPHOT. We detected more than 5,500 stars with a magnitude range of 14 \lsim m_{555} \lsim 28 mag. Three prominent stellar concentrations are identified with star counts in the observed field, the association NGC 602 itself, and two clusters, one of them not being…
We present an analysis of high resolution VLT-FLAMES spectra of 61 B-type stars with relatively narrow-lined spectra located in 4 fields centered on the Milky Way clusters; NGC3293 & NGC4755 and the Large and Small Magellanic cloud clusters; NGC2004 and NGC330. For each object a quantitative analysis was carried out using the non-LTE model atmosphere code TLUSTY; resulting in the determination of their atmospheric parameters and photospheric abundances of the dominant metal species (C, N, O, Mg, Si, Fe). The results are discussed in relation to our earlier work on 3 younger clusters in these g…
Hubble Space Telescope STIS observations of the B III resonance line at 2066A have been obtained and analyzed for two Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) B-type stars. While boron is not detected in either star, upper limits to the boron abundance are set, with 12+log(B/H) le 1.6 for both AV 304 and NGC 346-637. The upper limits are consistent with the relationship between boron and oxygen previously reported for Galactic disk stars. The SMC upper limits are discussed in light of that galaxy's star formation history, present oxygen abundance, and its present cosmic ray flux. The UV spectrum has also …
We present new optical spectroscopic and archival Spitzer IRAC photometric observations of a B-type star in the SMC cluster NGC 346, NGC 346:KWBBe 200. We detect numerous Fe II, [O I], and [Fe II] lines, as well as strong P-Cygni profile H I emission lines in its optical spectrum. The star's near-IR color and optical to IR SED clearly indicate the presence of an infrared excess, consistent with the presence of gas and warm, T ~800 K, circumstellar dust. Based on a crude estimate of the star's luminosity and the observed spectroscopic line profile morphologies, we find that the star is likely t…
Results obtained in the Magellanic Clouds using the latest near-IR DENIS survey are briefly revised. This sets the base to a similar study of AGB stars in other galaxies of the Local Group and in particular in NGC6822.
Observations indicate that present-day star formation in the Milky Way disk takes place in stellar ensembles or clusters rather than in isolation. Bound, long lived stellar groups are known as open clusters. They gradually lose stars and in their final evolutionary stages they are severely disrupted leaving an open cluster remnant made of a few stars. In this paper, we study in detail the stellar content and kinematics of the poorly populated star cluster NGC1901. This object appears projected against the Large Magellanic Cloud. The aim of the present work is to derive the current evolutionary…
The stellar content of the Im galaxy NGC 2366 is discussed on the basis of CCD BVR photometry. The three brightest blue and red stars have been used to estimate its distance, obtaining a balue of 2.9 Mpc. The spatial distribution of the young stellar population is discussed in the light of the integrated color indices and the color-magnitude diagrams of different zones of the galaxy. A generalized star formation burst seems to have taken place about 50 Myr ago. The youngest stars are preferentially formed in the South-West part of the bar, where the giant HII complex NGC 2363 is located, being…
We perform a detailed analysis of Cepheids in NGC 4258, Magellanic Clouds and Milky Way in order to verify the reliability of the theoretical scenario based on a large set of nonlinear convective pulsation models. We derive Wesenheit functions from the synthetic BVI magnitudes of the pulsators and we show that the sign and the extent of the metallicity effect on the predicted Period-Wesenheit (P-W) relations change according to the adopted passbands. These P-W relations are applied to measured BVI magnitudes of NGC 4258, Magellanic and Galactic Cepheids available in the literature. We find tha…
As first Paper of a series devoted to study the old stellar population in clusters and fields in the Small Magellanic Cloud, we present deep observations of NGC121 in the F555W and F814W filters, obtained with the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. The resulting color-magnitude diagram reaches ~3.5 mag below the main-sequence turn-off; deeper than any previous data. We derive the age of NGC121 using both absolute and relative age-dating methods. Fitting isochrones in the ACS photometric system to the observed ridge line of NGC121, gives ages of 11.8 +- 0.5 Gyr (Teramo),…
We present a new deep (down to V ~ 24) photometry of a wide region (6'x 6') around the LMC globular cluster NGC1866: our sample is complete, down to 3 mag below the brightest MS star. Detailed comparisons with various theoretical scenarios using models computed with the evolutionary code FRANEC have been done reaching the following conclusions: both standard models (i.e. computed by adopting the Schwarzschild criterion to fix the border of the convective core) and models with an enlarged convective core (overshooting) lead to a fair fit of the MS but are not able to reproduce the luminosity an…
Stellar feedback, expanding HII regions, wind-blown bubbles, and supernovae are thought to be important triggering mechanisms of star formation. Stellar associations, being hosts of significant numbers of early-type stars, are the loci where these mechanisms act. In this part of our photometric study of the star-forming region NGC346/N66 in the Small Magellanic Cloud, we present evidence based on previous and recent detailed studies, that it hosts at least two different events of triggered star formation and we reveal the complexity of its recent star formation history. In our earlier studies …
We search for effects of metallicity on B and Be stars in the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds (SMC and LMC) and in the Milky Way (MW). We extend our previous analysis of B and Be stars populations in the LMC to the SMC. The rotational velocities of massive stars and the evolutionary status of Be stars are examined with respect to their environments. Spectroscopic observations of hot stars belonging to the young cluster SMC-NGC 330 and its surrounding region have been obtained with the VLT-GIRAFFE facilities in MEDUSA mode. We determine fundamental parameters for B and Be stars with the GIRFI…
We have undertaken a detailed analysis of HST/WFPC2 and STIS imaging observations, and of supplementary wide-field ground-based observations obtained with the NTT of two young ~10-25 Myr) compact star clusters in the LMC, NGC 1805 and NGC 1818. The ultimate goal of our work is to improve our understanding of the degree of primordial mass segregation in star clusters. This is crucial for the interpretation of observational luminosity functions (LFs) in terms of the initial mass function (IMF), and for constraining the universality of the IMF. We present evidence for strong luminosity segregatio…
We present deep colour-magnitude diagrams for three rich intermediate-age star clusters in the Large Magellanic Cloud, constructed from archival ACS F435W and F814W imaging. All three clusters exhibit clear evidence for peculiar main-sequence turn-offs. NGC 1846 and 1806 each possess two distinct turn-off branches, while the turn-off for NGC 1783 shows a much larger spread in colour than can be explained by the photometric uncertainties. We demonstrate that although all three clusters contain significant populations of unresolved binary stars, these cannot be the underlying cause of the observ…
We have identified a candidate 1-2 x 10^5 year old luminous white dwarf in NGC 1818, a young star cluster in the Large Magellanic Cloud. This discovery strongly constrains the boundary mass M_c at which stars stop forming neutron stars and start forming white dwarfs, to M_c > 7.6 Msun.
We present high-quality J, H and K photometry of four Small Magellanic Cloud stellar clusters with intermediate ages in the 1-7 Gyr range (namely NGC 339, 361, 416 and 419) . We obtained deep Color-Magnitude Diagrams to study the evolved sequences and providing a detailed census of the Red Giant Branch (RGB), Asymptotic Giant Branch (AGB) and Carbon star populations in each cluster and their contribution to the total cluster light. We find that in the 5-7 Gyr old clusters AGB stars account for ~6 % of the total light in K-band, Carbon stars are lacking and RGB stars account for ~45 % of the to…
The detection of magnetic chemically peculiar (CP2) stars in open clusters of extragalactic systems can give observational answers to many unsolved questions. The mean percentage of CP2 stars in the Milky Way is of the order of 5% for the spectral range from early B- to F-type, luminosity class V objects. The origin of the CP2 phenomenon seems to be closely connected to the overall metallicity and global magnetic field environment. The theoretical models are still only tested by observations in the Milky Way. It is therefore essential to provide high quality observations in rather different gl…
The Ks magnitude distribution of asymptotic giant branch stars provides important constraints on the spatial variation of metallicity and mean-age of the stellar population of galaxies. Here, I present results of the investigation of these parameters across the Magellanic Clouds, M33, NGC 6822 and SagDIG and I discuss the tremendous improvement that new wide-field near-infrared instruments (i.e. VISTA) will provide on our understanding of the global intrinsic as well as dynamical history of these systems.
We present the results of our investigation of the intermediate-age star cluster BS 90, located in the vicinity of the HII region N 66 in the SMC, observed with HST/ACS. The high-resolution data provide a unique opportunity for a very detailed photometric study performed on one of the rare intermediate-age rich SMC clusters. The complete set of observations is centered on the association NGC 346 and contains almost 100,000 stars down to V ~28 mag. In this study we focus on the northern part of the region, which covers almost the whole stellar content of BS 90. We construct its stellar surface …
We present a catalog containing 290 LMC and 590 SMC Cepheids which have been obtained using the two 4k $\times$ 8k CCD cameras of the EROS~2 microlensing survey. The Cepheids were selected from 1,134,000 and 504,000 stars in the central regions of the LMC and SMC respectively, that were monitored over 150 nights between October 1996 and February 1997, at a rate of one measurement every night. For each Cepheid the light curves, period, magnitudes in the EROS~2 filter system, Fourier coefficients, J2000 coordinates and cross-identifications with objects referenced in the CDS Simbad database are …
We introduce our VLT-FLAMES survey of massive stars in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds, giving details of the observations in our younger fields in the LMC and SMC. In particular we highlight a new O2.5-type star discovered in N11, and Be-type stars in NGC 346 with permitted Fe II emission lines in their spectra. We give an overview of the distribution of spectral types in these fields and summarize the observed binary fraction.
We introduce a new survey of massive stars in the Galaxy and the Magellanic Clouds using the Fibre Large Array Multi-Element Spectrograph (FLAMES) instrument at the Very Large Telescope (VLT). Here we present observations of 269 Galactic stars with the FLAMES-Giraffe Spectrograph (R ~ 25,000), in fields centered on the open clusters NGC 3293, NGC 4755 and NGC 6611. These data are supplemented by a further 50 targets observed with the Fibre-Fed Extended Range Optical Spectrograph (FEROS, R = 48,000). Following a description of our scientific motivations and target selection criteria, the data r…
The autocorrelation function provides an objective test for the existence of special scales in the hierarchical clustering of young stars. We apply this measure to single-star photometry for the brightest main sequence stars in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC), the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), M33, and M31, using data from the Magellanic Clouds Photometric Survey and the Massey Local Group Survey. Our primary result is the identification of a transition to a higher correlation dimension (weaker clustering) at one kpc in the LMC and M31, and at 300 pc in M33. We suggest that this transition ma…
