The paper describes conditions for transformation from the Dirac representation to the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation. The necessary condition is the block-diagonal transformation of Hamiltonian relative to the upper and lower components of the wave function. The sufficient condition is the wave function transformation law described by relation (6). It has been demonstrated that the unitary transformations offered by the authors of the papers [14], [15], [16], [17] do not satisfy the sufficiency condition (6) and, hence, they are not the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformations. In applications, the matrix elements of any operator in the FW representation can be calculated, according to (6), using the normalized two-component wave functions in the Dirac representation known for the given problem.
General properties of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation which is widely used in quantum mechanics and quantum chemistry are considered. Merits and demerits of the original Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation method are analyzed. While this method does not satisfy the Eriksen condition of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, it can be corrected with the use of the Baker-Campbell-Hausdorff formula. We show a possibility of such a correction and propose an appropriate algorithm of calculations. An applicability of the corrected Foldy-Wouthuysen method is restricted by the condition of convergence o…
A method of Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for relativistic spin-1/2 particles in external fields is proposed. It permits determination of the Hamilton operator in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation with any accuracy. Interactions between a particle having an anomalous magnetic moment and nonstationary electromagnetic and electroweak fields are investigated.
The exact exponential Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation operator applicable for a particle with an arbitrary spin is derived. It can be successfully utilized for verifying any Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation method based on the exponential operator. When a verified method is relativistic, the relativistic exponential operator should be expanded in the semirelativistic power series. The use of the obtained exponential operator for a derivation of the Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian makes it possible to check the validity of any other method of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation, while this possibil…
The block-diagonalization of the Hamiltonian is not sufficient for the transformation to the Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) representation. The conditions enabling the transition from the Dirac representation to the FW one are formulated and proved. The connection between wave functions in the two representations is derived. The results obtained allows calculating expectation values of operators corresponding to main classical quantities.
The consideration of the Fermi - Bose duality of the Dirac equation with arbitrary mass has been continued. The bosonic solutions of this equation in the Foldy - Wouthuysen representation are found. The Bargman - Wigner analysis of additional solutions and comparison with standard fermionic solutions are carried out. The evident demonstration of additional bosonic features of the Foldy - Wouthuysen and Dirac equation is presented.
It is shown that, under the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation conditions, using the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation allows the problem of finding a classical limit of relativistic quantum mechanical equations to be reduced to the replacement of operators in the Hamiltonian and quantum mechanical equations of motion by the respective classical quantities.
We derive the exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation for Dirac fermions in a time independent external electromagnetic field in the basis of the Ritus eigenfunctions, namely the eigenfunctions of the operator $(γ\cdot Π)^2$, with $Π^μ= p^μ- e A^μ$. In this basis, the transformation acquires a free form involving the dynamical quantum numbers induced by the field.
The connection between wave functions in the Dirac and Foldy-Wouthuysen representations is found. When the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation is exact, upper spinors in two representations differ only by constant factors, and lower spinors in the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation are equal to zero.
Relativistic methods for the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation of the ``step-by-step'' type already at the first step give an expression for the Hamilton operator not coinciding with the exact result determined by the Eriksen method. The methods agree for the zeroth and first orders in the Planck constant terms but do not agree for the second and higher-order terms. We analyze the benefits and drawbacks of various methods and establish their applicability boundaries.
A general method of the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation is developed. This method is applicable to relativistic particles with any spin in arbitrarily strong external fields. It can be used when the de Broglie wavelength is much smaller than the characteristic distance. Contrary to previously developed relativistic methods, the present method satisfies the condition of the exact Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation and is well substantiated. The derived relativistic Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonian is expanded in powers of the Planck constant. In this expansion, terms proportional to the zero and first…
The Eriksen method is proven to yield a correct and exact result when a sufficient condition of exact transformation to the Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) representation is satisfied. Therefore, the Eriksen method is confirmed as valid. This makes it possible to establish the limits within which the approximate "step-by-step" methods are applicable. The latter is done by comparing the relativistic formulas for a Hamiltonian operator in the FW representation (obtained using those methods) and the known expression for the first terms of a series, which defines the expansion of this operator in powers of …
By following the Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) transformation of the Dirac equation, we work out the exact analytic expressions up to the $1/M^4$ order for the general cases in the covariant density functional theory. These results are further compared with the corresponding ones derived from another novel non-relativistic expansion method, the similarity renormalization group (SRG). Based on that, the origin of the difference between the results obtained by the FW transformation and SRG method is explored.
Inspired by the reconstituted similarity renormalization group method, the reconstituted Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) transformation is proposed. Applied to the Dirac equation in the covariant density functional theory, the reconstituted FW transformation shows a fast convergence of the spectrum of the single-particle energy. The single-particle densities and the single-particle scalar densities obtained by this new method are also investigated. In particular, the relativistic corrections to the densities from the picture-change error between the Schrödinger and Dirac pictures are discussed in detail…
Employing the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation it is demonstrated straightforwardly that the first and second Chern numbers are equal to the coefficients of the 2+1 and 4+1 dimensional Chern-Simons actions which are generated by the massive Dirac fermions coupled to the Abelian gauge fields. A topological insulator model in 2+1 dimensions is discussed and by means of a dimensional reduction approach the 1+1 dimensional descendant of the 2+1 dimensional Chern-Simons theory is presented. Field strength of the Berry gauge field corresponding to the 4+1 dimensional Dirac theory is explicitly derive…
Relativistic quantum mechanics of a Proca (spin-1) particle in Riemannian spacetimes is constructed. Covariant equations defining electromagnetic interactions of a Proca particle with the anomalous magnetic moment and the electric dipole moment in Riemannian spacetimes are formulated. The relativistic Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation with allowance for terms proportional to the zero power of the Planck constant is performed. The Hamiltonian obtained agrees with the corresponding Foldy-Wouthuysen Hamiltonians derived for scalar and Dirac particles and with their classical counterpart. The unific…
The detailed consideration of the relativistic canonical quantum-mechanical model of an arbitrary spin-multiplet is given. The group-theoretical analysis of the algebra of experimentally observables physical quantities for the spin 1/2 doublet is presented. It is shown that both the Foldy-Wouthuysen equation for the fermionic spin 1/2 doublet and the Dirac equation in its local representation are the consequences of the relativistic canonical quantum mechanics of the corresponding doublet. The mathematically well-defined consideration on the level of modern axiomatic approaches to the field th…
We investigate the nonrelativistic limit of the gravitationally coupled Dirac Equation via a Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation. The relativistic correction terms have immediate and obvious physical interpretations in terms of a gravitational zitterbewegung, and a gravitational spin-orbit coupling. We find no direct coupling of the spin vector to the gravitational force, which would otherwise violate parity. The particle-antiparticle symmetry described recently by one of us in [Phys.Rev.A 87 (2013) 032101] is verified on the level of the perturbative corrections accessed by the Foldy-Wouthuysen t…
We show that the origin of the nonequivalence of Hamiltonians in different representations is a change of the form of the time-derivative operator at a time-dependent unitary transformation. This nonequivalence does not lead to an ambiguity of the energy expectation values of a particle in nonstationary fields but assigns the basic representation. It has been explicitly or implicitly supposed in previous investigations that this representation is the Dirac one. We prove the alternative assertion about the basic role of the Foldy-Wouthuysen representation. We also derive the general equation fo…
We successively apply the generalized Case-Foldy-Feshbach-Villars (CFFV) and the Foldy-Wouthuysen (FW) transformation to derive the Hamiltonian for relativistic scalar particles in an electromagnetic field. In contrast to the original transformation, the generalized CFFV transformation contains an arbitrary parameter and can be performed for massless particles, which allows solving the problem of massless particles in an electromagnetic field. We show that the form of the Hamiltonian in the FW representation is independent of the arbitrarily chosen parameter. Compared with the classical Hamilt…
We use the Foldy--Wouthuysen (unitary) transformation to give an alternative characterization of the eigenvalues and eigenfunctions for the Brown-Ravenhall operator (the projected Dirac operator) in the case of a one-electron atom. In particular we transform the eigenvalues problem into an elliptic problem in the 4-dim half space $\mathbb{R}^4_{+}$ with Neumann boundary condition.
In weakly inhomogeneous media, Maxwell equations assume a Dirac-like form that is particularly apt for the study of paraxial propagation. Using this form, and via the Foldy-Wouthuysen transformation technique of the Dirac equation, we study the spin transport of paraxial light beams in weakly inhomogeneous media. We derive the Berry effect terms and establish the spin Hall effect and the Rytov rotation law for polarized paraxial beam transport.
The dynamics of wave packets in a relativistic Dirac oscillator is compared to that of the Jaynes-Cummings model. The strong spin-orbit coupling of the Dirac oscillator produces the entanglement of the spin with the orbital motion similar to what is observed in the model of quantum optics. The collapses and revivals of the spin which result extend to a relativistic theory our previous findings on nonrelativistic oscillator where they were known under the name of `spin-orbit pendulum'. There are important relativistic effects (lack of periodicity, zitterbewegung, negative energy states). Many o…
