Fully consistent axially-symmetric-deformed Quasi-particle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA) calculations have been performed, in which the same Gogny D1S effective force has been used for both the Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov mean field and the QRPA approaches. Giant resonances calculated in deformed $^{26-28}$Si and $^{22-24}$Mg nuclei as well as in the spherical $^{30}$Si and $^{28}$Mg isotopes are presented. Theoretical results for isovector-dipole and isoscalar monopole, quadrupole, and octupole responses are presented and the impact of the intrinsic nuclear deformation is discussed.
Low-energy dipole excitations in neon isotopes and N=16 isotones are calculated with a fully consistent axially-symmetric-deformed quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) approach based on Hartree-Fock-Bogolyubov (HFB) states. The same Gogny D1S effective force has been used both in HFB and QRPA calculations. The microscopical structure of these low-lying resonances, as well as the behavior of proton and neutron transition densities, are investigated in order to determine the isoscalar or isovector nature of the excitations. It is found that the N=16 isotones 24O, 26Ne, 28Mg, and 30Si …
Valuable theoretical predictions of nuclear dipole excitations in the whole chart are of great interest for different nuclear applications, including in particular nuclear astrophysics. Here we present large-scale calculations of the $E1$ $γ$-ray strength function obtained in the framework of the axially-symmetric deformed QRPA based on the finite-range Gogny force. This approach is applied to even-even nuclei, the strength function for odd nuclei being derived by interpolation. The convergence with respect to the adopted number of harmonic oscillator shells and the cut-off energy introduced i…
Theoretical results for giant resonances in the three doubly magic exotic nuclei $^{78}$Ni, $^{100}$Sn and $^{132}$Sn are obtained from Hartree-Fock (HF) plus Random Phase Approximation (RPA) calculations using the D1S parametrization of the Gogny two-body effective interaction. Special attention is paid to full consistency between the HF field and the RPA particle-hole residual interaction. The results for the exotic nuclei, on average, appear similar to those of stable ones, especially for quadrupole and octupole states. More exotic systems have to be studied in order to confirm such a trend…
Background: The quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA), within the framework of the nuclear density functional theory (DFT), has been a standard tool to access the collective excitations of the atomic nuclei. Recently, finite amplitude method (FAM) has been developed, in order to perform the QRPA calculations efficiently without any truncation on the two-quasiparticle model space. Purpose: We discuss the nuclear giant dipole resonance (GDR) in heavy rare-earth isotopes, for which the conventional matrix diagonalization of the QRPA is numerically demanding. A role of the Thomas-Reiche-…
We formulate a quasi-particle random phase approximation (QRPA) in the coordinate space representation. This model is a natural extension of the RPA model of Shlomo and Bertsch to open-shell nuclei in order to take into account pairing correlations together with the coupling to the continuum. We apply it to the $^{120}$Sn nucleus and show that low-lying excitation modes are significantly influenced by the pairing effects although the effects are marginal in the giant resonance region. The dependence of the pairing effect on the parity of low-lying collective mode is also discussed.
The $2νββ$-decay running sums for $^{76}$Ge and $^{150}$Nd nuclei are calculated within a QRPA approach with account for deformation. A realistic nucleon-nucleon residual interaction based on the Brueckner G matrix (for the Bonn CD force) is used. The influence of different model parameters on the functional behavior of the running sums is studied. It is found that the parameter $g_{pp}$ renormalizing the G matrix in the QRPA particle-particle channel is responsible for a qualitative change in behavior of the running sums at higher excitation energies. For realistic values of $g_{pp}$ a signif…
Valuable theoretical predictions of nuclear dipole excitations in the whole nuclear chart are of great interest for different applications, including in particular nuclear astrophysics. We present here the systematic study of the electric dipole (E1) photon strength functions (PSFs) combining the microscopic Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov plus Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (HFB+QRPA) model and the parametrizations constrained by the available experimental giant dipole resonance (GDR) data. For about 10000 nuclei with 8<Z<124 lying between the proton and the neutron drip-lines on nuclear ch…
We investigate the effects of the pairing in spherical nuclei. We use the same finite-range interaction of Gogny type in the three steps of our approach, Hartree-Fock, Bardeen, Cooper and Schrieffer, and quasi-particle random phase approximation calculations. We study electric and magnetic dipole, quadrupole and octuple excitations in oxygen and calcium isotopes and also in isotopes with 20 neutrons. We investigate the pairing effects on single particle energies and occupation probabilities, on the excitation energies, $B$-values and collectivity of low-lying states including the isoscalar ele…
Collisional damping widths of giant dipole excitations are calculated in Thomas-Fermi approximation by employing the microscopic in-medium cross-sections of Li and Machleidt and the phenomenological Gogny force. The results obtained in both calculations compare well, but account for about 25-35% of the observed widths in $^{120}Sn$ and $^{208}Pb$ at finite temperatures.
We have calculated the strength distributions of the giant monopole resonance in the even-A tin isotopes (A = 112-124) which were recently measured in inelastic $α$-scattering. The calculations were performed within two microscopic models: the quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) and the quasiparticle time blocking approximation which is an extension of the QRPA including quasiparticle-phonon coupling. We used a self-consistent calculational scheme based on the HF+BCS approximation. The single-particle continuum was exactly included on the RPA level. The self-consistent mean field a…

Collisional damping widths of giant monopole and quadrupole excitations for $^{120}$Sn and $^{208}$Pb at zero and finite temperatures are calculated within Thomas-Fermi approximation by employing the microscopic in-medium cross-sections of Li and Machleidt and the phenomenological Skyrme and Gogny forces, and are compared with each other. The results for the collisional widths of giant monopole and quadrupole vibrations at zero temperature as a function of the mass number show that the collisional damping of giant monopole vibrations accounts for about 30-40% of the observed widths at zero tem…
The strong deformation splitting of the isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR), recently observed in ($α,α'$) reaction in prolate $^{24}$Mg, is analyzed in the framework of the Skyrme quasiparticle random-phase-approximation (QRPA) approach with the Skyrme forces SkM*, SVbas and SkP$^δ$. The calculations with these forces give close results and confirm that the low-energy E0-peak is caused by the deformation-induced coupling of ISGMR with the K=0 branch of the isoscalar giant quadrupole resonance.
"Why is the EoS for tin so soft?" is a longstanding question, which prevents us from determining the nuclear incompressibility $K_\infty$ accurately. To solve this puzzle, a fully self-consistent quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) plus quasiparticle-vibration coupling (QPVC) approach based on Skyrme-Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov is developed. We show that the many-body correlations introduced by QPVC, which shift the ISGMR energy in Sn isotopes by about 0.4 MeV more than the energy in $^{208}$Pb, play a crucial role in providing a unified description of the ISGMR in Sn and Pb isotopes. …
We compare the results obtained in the framework of the quasiparticle random phase approximation (QRPA) on top of a Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov (HFB) with the most recent experiments on giant monopole resonances in Pb, Sn, Zr, Sm, Mo and Cd. Our calculations are fully self consistent and the density dependence of pairing interactions is, for the first time in this framework, properly taken into account. In the particle-hole (ph) channel we employ different Skyrme functionals (SLy5, SkM* and Skxs20) while in the particle-particle (pp) channel we make use of density dependent contact interactions. W…
The pygmy dipole resonance (PDR) is studied in various medium-heavy nuclei by using a Gogny interaction in a self-consistent Hartree-Fock plus Random Phase Approximation method. We compare the details of the PDR structure with those of the giant dipole resonance (GDR). In the PDR protons and neutrons vibrate in phase, and the main contributions are given by particle-hole excitations involving the neutrons in excess. On the contrary, in the GDR protons and neutrons vibrate out of phase, and all the nucleons are involved in the excitation. The values of the parameters we used to define the colle…
The deformation-induced splitting of isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) is systematically analyzed in a wide range of masses covering medium, rare-earth, actinide, and superheavy axial deformed nuclei. The study is performed within the fully self-consistent quasiparticle random-phase-approximation (QRPA) method based on the Skyrme functional. Two Skyrme forces, one with a large (SV-bas) and one with a small (SkP) nuclear incompressibility, are considered. The calculations confirm earlier results that, due to the deformation-induced E0-E2 coupling, the isoscalar E0 resonance attains a d…
The isoscalar giant monopole resonance (ISGMR) in Cd, Sn and Pb isotopes has been studied within the self-consistent Skyrme Hartree-Fock+BCS and quasi-particle random phase approximation (QRPA). Three Skyrme parameter sets are used in the calculations, i.e., SLy5, SkM* and SkP, since they are characterized by different values of the compression modulus in symmetric nuclear matter, namely K=230, 217, and 202 MeV, respectively. We also investigate the effect of different types of pairing forces on the ISGMR in Cd, Sn and Pb isotopes. The calculated peak energies and the strength distributions of…
The recent RCNP $(α, α')$ data on the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) and Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance (ISGQR) in $^{92,94,96,98,100}$Mo are analyzed within a fully self-consistent Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA) approach with Skyrme interactions, in which pairing correlations and possible axial deformations are taken into account. The Skyrme sets SkM*, SLy6, SVbas and SkP$^δ$, that explore a diversity of nuclear matter properties, are used. We discuss the connection between the line shape of the monopole strength ISGMR and the deformation-induced coupling be…
The status of the theoretical research on the compressional modes of finite nuclei and the incompressibility $K_\infty$ of nuclear matter, is reviewed. It is argued that the recent experimental data on the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) allow extracting the value of $K_\infty$ with an uncertainity of about $\pm$ 12 MeV. Non-relativistic (Skyrme, Gogny) and relativistic mean field models predict for $K_\infty$ values which are significantly different from one another, namely $\approx$ 220-235 and $\approx$ 250-270 MeV respectively. It is shown that the solution of this puzzle requir…
The isoscalar giant monopole resonances (ISGMR) and giant dipole resonances (ISGDR) in medium-heavy nuclei are investigated in the framework of HF+RPA and HF-BCS+QRPA with Skyrme effective interactions. It is found that pairing has little effect on these modes. It is also found that the coupling of the RPA states to 2p-2h configurations results in about (or less than) 1 MeV shifts of the resonance energies and at the same time gives the correct total widths. For the ISGMR, comparison with recent data leads to a value of nuclear matter compression modulus close to 215 MeV. However, a discrepanc…
We investigate effects of pairing and of quadrupole deformation on two sorts of nuclear excitations,$γ$-vibrational $K^π=2^+$ states and dipole resonances (isovector dipole, pygmy, compression, toroidal). The analysis is performed within the quasiparticle random-phase approximation (QRPA) based on the Skyrme energy functional using the Skyrme parametrization SLy6. Particular attention is paid to i) the role of the particle-particle (pp) channel in the residual interaction of QRPA, ii) comparison of volume pairing (VP) and surface pairing (SP), iii) peculiarities of deformation splitting in the…
We propose a self-consistent quasi-particle random phase approximation (QRPA) plus quasi-particle-vibration coupling (QPVC) model with Skyrme interactions to describe the width and the line shape of giant resonances in open-shell nuclei, in which the effect of superfluidity should be taken into account in both the ground state and the excited states. We apply the new model to the Gamow-Teller resonance in the superfluid nucleus $^{120}$Sn, including both the isoscalar spin-triplet and the isovector spin-singlet pairing interactions. The strength distribution in $^{120}$Sn is well reproduced an…
In order to explore the nature of collective modes in weakly bound nuclei, we have investigated deformation effects and surface flow patterns of isovector dipole modes in a shape-coexisting nucleus $^{40}$Mg. The calculations were done in a fully self-consistent continuum finite-amplitude Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA) in a large deformed spatial mesh. An unexpected result of pygmy and giant dipole modes having disproportionate deformation splittings in strength functions was obtained. Furthermore, the transition current densities demonstrate that the long-sought core-halo osc…
Background : Several recent experiments report significant low-energy isoscalar monopole strength, below the giant resonance, in various nuclei. In light $α$-conjugate nuclei, these low-energy resonances were recently interpreted as cluster vibration modes. However, the nature of these excitations in neutron-rich nuclei remain elusive. Purpose : The present work provides a systematic analysis of the low-energy monopole strength in isotopic chains, from Neon to Germanium, in order to monitor and understand its nature and conditions of emergence. Methods : We perform covariant quasiparticle rand…
A low-energy magnetic dipole $(M1)$ spin-scissors resonance (SSR) located just below the ordinary orbital scissors resonance (OSR) was recently predicted in deformed nuclei within the Wigner Function Moments (WFM) approach. We analyze this prediction using fully self-consistent Skyrme Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA) method. Skyrme forces SkM*, SVbas and SG2 are implemented to explore SSR and OSR in $^{160,162,164}$Dy and $^{232}$Th. Accuracy of the method is justified by a good description of M1 spin-flip giant resonance. The calculations show that isotopes $^{160,162,164}$Dy i…
Background: In highly deformed nuclei, there is a noticeable coupling of the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) and the $K = 0$ component of the Isoscalar Giant Quadrupole Resonance (ISGQR), which results in a double peak structure of the isoscalar monopole (IS0) strength (a narrow low-energy deformation-induced peak and a main broad ISGMR part). The energy of the narrow low-lying IS0 peak is sensitive to both the incompressibility modulus $K_\infty$ and the coupling between IS0 and isoscalar quadrupole (IS2) strength. Objective: This study aims to investigate the two-peaked structure …
The nuclear incompressibility $K_\infty$ is deduced from measurements of the Isoscalar Giant Monopole Resonance (ISGMR) in medium-heavy nuclei, and the resulting value turns out to be model dependent. Since the considered nuclei have neutron excess, it has been suggested that the model dependence is due to the different behaviour of the symmetry energy in different models. To clarify this issue, we make a systematic and careful analysis based on new Skyrme forces which span a wide range of values for $K_\infty$, for the value of the symmetry energy at saturation and for its density dependence.…
