In dense hot star winds, the infrared and radio continua are dominated by free-free opacity and recombination emission line spectra. In the case of a spherically symmetric outflow that is isothermal and expanding at constant radial speed, the radiative transfer for the continuum emission from a dense wind is analytic. Even the emission profile shape for a recombination line can be derived. Key to these derivations is that the opacity scales with only the square of the density. These results are well-known. Here an extension of the derivation is developed that also allows for line blends and the inclusion of an additional power-law dependence beyond just the density dependence. The additional power-law is promoted as a representation of a radius dependent clumping factor. It is shown that differences in the line widths and equivalent widths of the emission lines depend on the steepness of the clumping power-law. Assuming relative level populations in LTE in the upper levels of He {\sc ii}, an illustrative application of the model to {\em Spitzer}/IRS spectral data of the carbon-rich star WR 90 is given.
We report measurements of He I 5876 emission from the ionized gas outside the HII regions in three Magellanic irregular galaxies. The mean reddening-corrected He I / H-alpha intensity ratio is 0.041 independent of spatial location within each galaxy. This value is much higher than that measured in the warm ionized medium of the Milky Way and implies the DIG is ionized by radiation harder than that from a 40,000 K star.
Radio recombination lines (RRL) at 8 GHz and 15 GHz detected from four starburst galaxies are shown to arise in compact high density HII regions, which are undetectable below ~4 GHz. Detection of an RRL at 1.4 GHz towards one galaxy and upper limits in the other three are consistent with the presence of an equal amount of low density diffuse gas. Continuum flux density measurements using the GMRT will be important in constraining the properties of the diffuse gas.
Radio recombination lines at a wavelength of 20 cm reveals the presence of an extended component of ionized gas of lower density in the Sgr A complex. This component extends well beyond the thermal `mini-spiral' SgrA-West, which seem to be embedded in it. The low-density component is present over the entire extent of SgrA East and possibly beyond and it is responsible for the turnover in the spectrum of SgrA East and the halo observed by Pedlar et al (1989) at 90 cm. The radial velocity of the extended ionized gas range from +50 km/s to -200 km/s with minima of emission near -50 and -150 km/s.…
One of the most dramatic signatures of the reionization era may be the enormous ionized bubbles around luminous quasars (with radii reaching ~40 comoving Mpc), which may survive as "fossil'' ionized regions long after their source shuts off. Here we study how the inhomogeneous intergalactic medium (IGM) evolves inside such fossils. The average recombination rate declines rapidly with time, and the brief quasar episode significantly increases the mean free path inside the fossil bubbles. As a result, even a weak ionizing background generated by galaxies inside the fossil can maintain it in a re…
Primordial tangled cosmological Magnetic Fields source rotational velocity perturbations of the baryon fluid, even in the post-recombination universe. These vortical modes inturn leave a characteristic imprint on the temperature anisotropy of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB), if the CMB photons can be re-scatterred after recombination. Observations from WMAP indicate that the Universe underwent a relatively early re-ionization ($z_{ri} \sim 15$), which does indeed lead to a significant optical depth for re-scattering of CMB photons after the re-ionization epoch. We compute the resulting a…
We have detected the H92alpha radio recombination line from two dwarf starburst galaxies, NGC 5253 and He 2-10, using the Very Large Array. Both the line data as well as the radio continuum data are used to model the properties of the ionized gas in the centers of these galaxies. We consider a multi-density model for radio recombination lines and show why previous models, which were based on the assumption of gas at a single density, are valid in many situations. The models show that the ionized gas has a density of ~10^4 /cc in both galaxies, with an effective size of 2-10 pc and a total mass…
We have analysed the infrared hydrogen recombination lines of a sample of well studied hot massive stars observed with the Infrared Space Observatory. Our sample contains stars from several classes of objects, whose circumstellar environment is believed to be dominated by an ionized stellar wind (the Luminous Blue Variables) or by a dense disk-like geometry (Be stars and B[e] stars). We show that hydrogen infrared recombination lines can be used as a diagnostic tool to constrain the geometry of the ionized circumstellar material. The line strengths are sensitive to the density of the emitting …
Context. Fast-moving knots (FMK) in the Galactic supernova remnant Cassiopeia A consist mainly of metals and allow to study element production in supernovae and shock physics in great detail. Aims. We work out theoretically and suggest to observe previously unexplored class of spectral lines -- metal recombination lines in optical and near-infrared bands -- emitted by the cold ionized and cooling plasma in the fast-moving knots. Methods. By tracing ion radiative and dielectronic recombination, collisional $l$-redistribution and radiative cascade processes, we compute resulting oxygen, silicon …
We have carried out VLA D-array observations of the C91alpha carbon recombination line as well as Effelsberg 100-m observations of the C65alpha line in a 5 arcmin square region centered between the Bar and the Trapezium stars in the Orion Nebula with spatial resolutions of 10 arcsec and 40 arcsec, respectively. The results show the ionized carbon in the PDR associated with the Orion Bar to be in a thin, clumpy layer sandwiched between the ionization front and the molecular gas. From the observed line widths we get an upper limit on the temperature in the C+ layer of 1500 K and from the line in…
Velocity shifts and differential broadening of radio recombination lines are used to estimate the densities and velocities of the ionized gas in several hypercompact and ultracompact HII regions. These small HII regions are thought to be at their earliest evolutionary phase and associated with the youngest massive stars. The observations suggest that these HII regions are characterized by high densities, supersonic flows and steep density gradients, consistent with accretion and outflows that would be associated with the formation of massive stars.
We have observed seven ultracompact HII regions in hydrogen recombination lines in the millimeter band. Toward four of these regions, there is a high velocity (full width to half maximum 60-80 km/s) component in the line profiles. The high velocity gas accounts for 35-70% of the emission measure within the beam. We compare these objects to an additional seven similar sources we have found in the literature. The broad recombination line objects (BRLOs) make up about 30% of all sources in complexes containing ultracompact HII regions. Comparison of spectral line and continuum data implies that t…
High resolution 7 mm observations of the W49N massive star forming region have detected recombination line emission from the individual ultracompact (UC) HII regions on 50 milliarcsecond (600 AU) scales. These line observations, combined with multifrequency, high-resolution continuum imaging of the region at 7 mm (VLA) and at 3 mm and 1 mm (BIMA), indicate that five to seven of the eighteen ultracompact sources in W49N are broad recombination line objects (BRLOs) as described by Jaffe & Martin-Pintado (1999). BRLOs have both broad radio recombination lines ($Δ$V$>$60 \kms) and rising spectra (…
Aims. We are trying to probe conditions in the youngest super star clusters, those still embedded in dense obscuring clouds. Methods. The hydrogen recombination lines in the radio and infrared can be observed through the obscuration, as the optical and UV lines cannot, and give us the kinematics of the ionized gas. Results. The line profiles of the clusters resemble superpositions of the lines of many very young ultra-compact or hyper-compact HII regions. This can be explained if each OB star is individually embedded in dense material which it is accreting, even as it ionizes. Conclusions. We …
We present high resolution H41a hydrogen recombination line observations of the 1.2' (3 pc) region surrounding Sgr A* at 92 GHz using the OVRO Millimeter Array with an angular resolution of 7" x 3" and velocity resolution of 13 km/s. New observations of H31a, H35a, H41a, and H44a lines were obtained using the NRAO 12-m telescope, and their relative line strengths are interpreted in terms of various emission mechanisms. These are the most extensive and most sensitive observations of recombination line to date. Observations of HCO+ (1 - 0) transition at 89 GHz are also obtained simultaneously wi…
We present observations of radio recombination lines from the starburst galaxy Arp 220 at 1.4, 8.1, 84, 96 and 207 GHz (sensitive upper limit for the 1.4 GHz line and firm detections at the other frequencies), and the radio continuum spectrum between 330 MHz and 207 GHz. We show that a model with three components of ionized gas with different densities and area covering factors can consistently explain both RRL and continuum data. The total mass of ionized gas in the three components is 3 x 10^7 M_sun requiring 3 x 10^5 O5 stars with a total Lyman continuum production rate (NLyc) of 1.3 x 10^{…
A search for radio recombination lines near 20 cm at z=0.193 and z=0.886 towards the gravitational lens system PKS 1830-211 has yielded upper limits on the line optical depth of 5 x 10^{-5} and 5 x10^{-4} at the two redshifts respectively. Based on the non-detections, we derive upper limits to the emission measure of the ionized gas in the absorbing systems. We also present continuum flux density measurements over the frequency range 0.3-45 GHz made at a single epoch.
In this paper, we investigate the behaviour of the number of Lyman continuum ionizing photons as compared to the actual number of hydrogen recombinations in HII galaxies. We evaluate the number of ionizing photons from the population synthesis of spectra observed in the visible, extrapolating the spectra to the extreme ultraviolet (EUV), beyond the Lyman limit. We check for possible systematic deviations of the predicted ionizing spectra in the EUV by comparing the ratio of the predicted number of ionizing photons to the number of recombinations, as measured in H$β$, ${\rm Δ\log Q(H^0)}$, with…
We present results from integral field spectroscopy with the Potsdam multi-Aperture Spectrograph of the head of the Herbig-Haro object HH 202 with a spatial sampling of 1"x1". We have obtained maps of different emission lines, physical conditions --such as electron temperature and density-- and ionic abundances from recombination and collisionally excited lines. We present the first map of the Balmer temperature and of the temperature fluctuation parameter, t^2. We have calculated the t^2 in the plane of the sky, which is substantially smaller than that determined along the line of sight. We h…
We present XMM-Newton RGS observations of the soft X-ray spectrum of NGC 4051, and explore their implications for the inner accretion disk and ionized outflow in the active galactic nucleus. We fit the soft X-ray excess with a relativistically broadened O VIII recombination spectrum, including the entire line series and recombination continuum. This plus an underlying power law continuum provides a much better fit to the soft X-ray spectrum than a single temperature or disk blackbody plus power law. The emission line profiles, computed for a Kerr metric around a maximally rotating black hole, …
We present a first analysis of a high resolution X-ray spectrum of the ionized stellar wind of Vela X-1 during eclipse. The data were obtained with the High Energy Transmission Grating Spectrometer onboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory. The spectrum is resolved into emission lines with fluxes between 0.02 and 1.04x10^4 ph/cm^2/s. We identify lines from a variety of charge states, including fluorescence lines from cold material, a warm photoionized wind. We can exclude signatures from collisionally ionized plasmas. For the first time we identify fluorescence lines from L-shell ions from lower Z…
We present an atlas of three-dimensional (position-position-velocity) spectra of the Orion Nebula in optical emission lines from a variety of different ionization stages: [O I] 6300, [S II] 6716,6731, [N II] 6584, [S III] 6312, H alpha 6563, and [O III] 5007. These transitions provide point to point information about the physical structure and kinematics of the nebula at an effective resolution of 3'' x 2'' x 10 km/s, clearly showing the large scale behavior of the ionized gas and the presence of localized phenomena such as Herbig-Haro outflows. As an example application of the atlas, we prese…
We have calculated partial final-state resolved radiative recombination (RR) rate coefficients from the initial ground and metastable levels of all elements up to and including Zn, plus Kr, Mo, and Xe, for all isoelectronic sequences up to Na-like forming Mg-like. The data are archived according to the Atomic Data and Analysis Structure (ADAS) data class adf48, which spans a temperature range of z^2(10^1 - 10^7)K, where z is the initial ion charge. Fits to total rate coefficients have been determined, for both the ground and metastable levels, and those for the ground are presented here. Compa…
A renewed attempt to detect radio recombination lines from external galaxies has resulted in the measurement of lines from several bright starburst galaxies. The lines are produced by hydrogen ionized by young, high-mass stars and are diagnostic of the conditions and gas dynamics in the starburst regions without problems of dust obscuration. We present here detections of the lines H91alpha and H92alpha near 8.6 GHz from the starburst nuclei in NGC 3256, NGC 4945, and the Circinus galaxy using the ATCA and VLA. Modelling the line emitting region as a collection of H II regions, we derive the re…
A gamma-ray burst of 28 August 1997 was localized by the All-Sky Monitor on the Rossi XTE satellite and its coordinates were promptly disseminated. An ASCA followup started 1.17 days after the burst as a Target of Opportunity Observation and detected an X-ray afterglow. The spectral data displayed a hump around ~5 keV and an absorption column of 7.1 x 10^21 cm^{-2}. This hump structure is likely a recombination edge of iron in the vicinity of the source, taking account of the redshift z = 0.9578 found for the likely host galaxy of the associated radio flare. Radiative Recombination edge and Co…
The Equivalent Widths (EW) of the He- and H-like iron lines produced in photoionized, circumnuclear matter of AGN are calculated with respect to both the reflected and the total continua. We found that the EWs with respect tothe total continuum may be as large as a few tens of eV, making them observable in bright Seyfert 1s by instruments on board Chandra and XMM-Newton. We apply our calculations to the XMM-Newton spectrum of NGC 5506 and found a good agreement with the data at the expense of a modest iron overabundance.
We report here on a survey of carbon recombination lines (RLs) near 8.5 GHz toward 17 ultra-compact \HII regions (\UCHII s). Carbon RLs are detected in 11 directions, indicating the presence of dense photodissociation regions (PDRs) associated with the \UCHII s. In this paper, we show that the carbon RLs provide important, complementary information on the kinematics and physical properties of the ambient medium near \UCHII s. Non-LTE models for the carbon line forming region are developed, assuming that the PDRs surround the \UCHII s, and we constrained the model parameters by multi-frequency …
By means of a Monte Carlo code that accounts for Compton scattering and photoabsorption followed by recombination, we have investigated the radiation transfer of Ly alpha, He alpha, and recombination continua photons of H- and He-like C, N, O, and Ne produced in the photoionized atmosphere of a relativistic black hole accretion disk. We find that photoelectric opacity causes significant attenuation of photons with energies above the O VIII K-edge; that the conversion efficiencies of these photons into lower-energy lines and recombination continua are high; and that accounting for this reproces…
We infer the gas kinematics, diagnostics and ionic radial profiles, distance and central star parameters, nebular photo- ionization model, spatial structure and evolutionary phase of the PN NGC 6741 by means of long-slit high-resolution spectra at nine position angles. NGC 6741 (distance ~2.0 kpc, age ~1400 yr, ionized mass Mion ~0.06 Mo) is a dense (electron density up to 12,000 cm^(-3)), high-excitation, almost- prolate ellipsoid, surrounded by a sharp low-excitation skin (the ionization front), and embedded into a spherical (radius ~ 0.080 pc), almost-neutral, high-density (n(HI) ~7 x 10^3 …
The VLA and the BIMA array were used to obtain high resolution (10-20") observations of C+, traced by the C91a recombination line at 8.6 GHz, and the dense molecular gas, traced by HCN and HCO+(1-0), of the photon dominated region (PDR) associated with the reflection nebula NGC 2023. Using the VLA, continuum emission is detected at 8.6 GHz from a faint HII region associated with HD 37903. The C91a emission originates from a 0.4 pc long filament, extending from the east to the south of the exciting star HD 37903. Within the filament three C91a clumps can be distinguished, each associated with f…
We have studied the differences between the diffuse ionized gas (DIG) and the HII regions along a slit position in the local dwarf irregular galaxy NGC 6822. The slit position passes through the two most prominent HII regions: Hubble V and Hubble X. Important differences have been found in the excitation, ionization, and [NII]6584/Ha and [SII]6717/Ha line ratios between the DIG and the HII locations. Moreover, the values of all the line ratios are not similar to those in the DIG locations of spiral galaxies but are very similar to the values in other irregular galaxies, such as IC 10. We also …
Unusual patterns of recombination emission from gas ionized by metal-free stars may distinguish early star-forming galaxies from their present-day counterparts. This pattern arises from the harder ionizing spectrum expected from metal-free stars, which strongly enhances the strength of He II recombination lines. Our calculations indicate that line fluxes of He II 1640 and 4686 are sufficiently large to be detected by narrowband and spectroscopic searches for high-redshift emission-line sources at redshift z ~ 5 using current instruments. An unknown fraction of Lya emitters may harbor low-metal…
Context. Gas ionized by starburst activity radiates radio recombination lines (RRLs), from which one can derive the plasma conditions and the number of massive stars formed in the burst, free of dust obscuration effects. Aims. We aimed to find RRL emission from additional starburst systems and to use the line properties to estimate the properties of the ionized gas. Methods. We conducted a search for RRLs in the nearby extragalactic starburst or Seyfert galaxies NGC 1808, the Circinus galaxy, NGC 4038/9, II Zw 40, NGC 6221, NGC 7552, IRAS 18325-5926, IC 5063, and VV 114. We used the VLA and th…
We have obtained deep optical, long-slit spectrophotometry of the Galactic HII regions M 17, NGC 3576 and of the Magellanic Cloud HII regions 30 Doradus, LMC N11B and SMC N66, recording the optical recombination lines (ORLs) of CII, NII and OII. Temperature-insensitive ORL C2+/O2+ and N2+/O2 ratios are obtained for all nebulae except SMC N66. The ORL C2+/O2+ ratios show remarkable agreement within each galactic system, while also being in agreement with the corresponding CEL ratios. For all five nebulae, the O2+/H+ abundance derived from multiple OII ORLs is found to be higher than the corresp…
The history of the transition from a neutral intergalactic medium to one that is almost fully ionized can reveal the character of cosmological ionizing sources. In this talk I will discuss the implications for rival reionization scenarios of the rapid decline observed in the space density of quasars and star-forming galaxies at redshifts z>3. The hydrogen component in a highly inhomogeneous universe is completely reionized when the number of ionizing photons emitted in one recombination time equals the mean number of hydrogen atoms. At z=5, the local character of the UV metagalactic flux allow…
He II Ly-alpha 304/H-alpha 1640 emission lines are mainly produced by recombination, and their canonical ratio of about 10 may be a sensitive reddening indicator. We obtain the high S/N optical spectra of two quasars and combine them with the far-UV spectra that show the He II 304 emission. For HS 1700+64, the He II 1640 emission is not detected, and an upper limit to it sets the ratio greater than 20. For Q0302-003, the ratio is very low, on the order of unity. The most plausible cause for such a low ratio is extinction in the EUV band by very fine grains of dust. Q0302-003 has a prominent na…
The radio source 3C84, in NGC1275, has a two sided structure on parsec scales. The northern feature, presumed to be associated with a jet moving away from the Earth, shows strong evidence for free-free absorption. The ionized gas responsible for that absorption would be a source of detectable stimulated recombination line emission for a wide range of physical conditions. The VLBA has been used to search for the H65$α$ hydrogen recombination line. The line is only expected to be seen against the northern feature which contains a small fraction of the total radio flux density. This spatial discr…
Motivated by recent observations of high-velocity, highly ionized winds in several QSOs, models of purely continuum-driven winds launched from approximately 200 GM_{BH}/c^2 are presented. Launching conditions are investigated, as well as the observational signatures for a variety of initial conditions and illuminating continua. While we verify that continuum-driven, highly-ionized outflows reach the observed velocities for L/L_{Edd} >~ 1, independent of the incident spectral shape, such winds are too highly ionized to exhibit the observed absorption features when launched with an AGN continuum…
Since the last IAU symposium on planetary nebulae (PNe), several deep spectroscopic surveys of the relatively faint optical recombination lines (ORLs) emitted by heavy element ions in PNe and H II regions have been completed. New diagnostic tools have been developed thanks to progress in the calculations of basic atomic data. Together, they have led to a better understanding of the physical conditions under which the various types of emission lines arise. The studies have strengthened the previous conjecture that nebulae contain another component of cold, high metallicity gas, which is too coo…
Observations of the H66a recombination line from the ionized gas in the cluster of newly formed massive stars, G10.6-0.4, show that most of the continuum emission derives from the dense gas in an ionized accretion flow that forms an ionized disk or torus around a group of stars in the center of the cluster. The inward motion observed in the accretion flow suggests that despite the equivalent luminosity and ionizing radiation of several O stars, neither radiation pressure nor thermal pressure has reversed the accretion flow. The observations indicate why the radiation pressure of the stars and …
We present high quality optical spectroscopic observations of the planetary nebula (PN) Hf 2-2. The spectrum exhibits many prominent optical recombination lines (ORLs) from heavy element ions. Analysis of the H {\sc i} and He {\sc i} recombination spectrum yields an electron temperature of $\sim 900$ K, a factor of ten lower than given by the collisionally excited [O {\sc iii}] forbidden lines. The ionic abundances of heavy elements relative to hydrogen derived from ORLs are about a factor of 70 higher than those deduced from collisionally excited lines (CELs) from the same ions, the largest a…
Using the Very Large Array (VLA) the C76$α$ and C53$α$ recombination lines (RLs) have been detected toward the ultra-compact \HII\ region (UCHII region) G35.20$-$1.74. We also obtained upper limits to the carbon RLs at 6 cm (C110$α$ & C111$α$) and 3.6 cm (C92$α$) wavelengths with the VLA. In addition, continuum images of the W48A complex (which includes G35.20$-$1.74) are made with angular resolutions in the range 14\arcsec to 2\arcsec. Modeling the multi-wavelength line and continuum data has provided the physical properties of the UCHII region and the photodissociation region (PDR) responsib…
We present results from observations of H110alpha recombination-line emission at 4.874 GHz and the related 4.8-GHz continuum emission towards the Carina Nebula using the Australia Telescope Compact Array. These data provide information on the velocity, morphology and excitation parameters of the ionized gas associated with the two bright HII regions within the nebula, Car I and Car II. They are consistent with both Car I and Car II being expanding ionization fronts arising from the massive star clusters Trumpler 14 and Trumpler 16, respectively. The overall continuum emission distribution at 4…
Over a timescale of a few years, an observed change in the optically thick radio continuum flux can indicate whether an unresolved H II region around a newly formed massive star is changing in size. In this Letter we report on a study of archival VLA observations of the hypercompact H II region G24.78+0.08 A1 that shows a decrease of ~ 45 % in the 6-cm flux over a five year period. Such a decrease indicates a contraction of ~ 25 % in the ionized radius and could be caused by an increase in the ionized gas density if the size of the H II region is determined by a balance between photoionization…
We have carried out 21 cm radio continuum observations of 16 UC HII regions using the VLA (D-array) in search of associated extended emission. We have also observed H76$_α$ recombination line towards all the sources and He76$_α$ line at the positions with strong H76$_α$ line emission. The UC HII regions have simple morphologies and large (>10) ratios of single-dish to VLA fluxes. Extended emission was detected towards all the sources. The extended emission consists of one to several compact components and a diffuse extended envelope. All the UC HII regions but two are located in the compact co…
[Abridged] Deep optical observations of the spectra of 12 Galactic planetary nebulae (PNe) and 3 Magellanic Cloud PNe were presented in Paper I by Tsamis et al. (2003b), who carried out an abundance analysis using the collisionally excited forbidden lines. Here, the relative intensities of faint optical recombination lines (ORLs) from ions of carbon, nitrogen and oxygen are analysed in order to derive the abundances of these ions relative to hydrogen. We define an abundance discrepancy factor (ADF) as the ratio of the abundance derived for a heavy element ion from its recombination lines to th…
