We present results from integral field spectroscopy with the Potsdam multi-Aperture Spectrograph of the head of the Herbig-Haro object HH 202 with a spatial sampling of 1"x1". We have obtained maps of different emission lines, physical conditions --such as electron temperature and density-- and ionic abundances from recombination and collisionally excited lines. We present the first map of the Balmer temperature and of the temperature fluctuation parameter, t^2. We have calculated the t^2 in the plane of the sky, which is substantially smaller than that determined along the line of sight. We have mapped the abundance discrepancy factor of O^{2+}, ADF(O^{2+}), finding its maximum value at the HH 202-S position. We have explored the relations between the ADF(O^{2+}) and the electron density, the Balmer and [O III] temperatures, the ionization degree as well as the t^2 parameter. We do not find clear correlations between these properties and the results seem to support that the ADF and t^2 are independent phenomena. We have found a weak negative correlation between the O^{2+} abundance determined from recombination lines and the temperature, which is the expected behaviour in an ionized nebula, hence it seems that there is not evidence for the presence of super-metal rich droplets in H II regions.
We present observations of the Type Ia supernova SN 2002er during the brightening phase. The observations were performed with the Potsdam Multi Aperture Spectrophotometer (PMAS) integral field instrument. Due to the 8"*8", field of view of the spectrograph an accurate background subtraction was possible. Results from analyses of the evolution of absorption features in comparisons with other SNe show that SN 2002er is a fairly bright Type Ia supernova with a peak brightness of M_B=-19.6+-0.1.
We performed an integral field spectroscopic study for the HII galaxy IIZw70 in order to investigate the interplay between its ionized interstellar medium (ISM) and the massive star formation (SF). Observations were taken in the optical spectral range (3700-6800 A) with the Potsdam Multi-Aperture Spectrophotometer (PMAS) attached to the 3.5 m telescope at CAHA. We created and analysed maps of spatially distributed emission-lines, continuum emission and properties of the ionized ISM (e.g. physical-chemical conditions, dust extinction, kinematics). We investigated the relation of these propertie…
We present our Disk Mass project as the main science case for building a new fiber IFU-module for the PMAS spectrograph, currently mounted at the Cassegrain focus of the 3.5m telescope on Calar Alto. Compared to traditional long-slit observations, the large light collecting power of 2-dimensional Integral Field Units dramatically improves the prospects for performing spectroscopy on extended low surface brightness objects with high spectral resolution. This enables us to measure stellar velocity dispersions in the outer disk of normal spiral galaxies. We describe some results from a PMAS pilot…
We describe a project to study the state of the ISM in ~20 low redshift (z<0.3) QSO host galaxies observed with the PMAS integral field spectrograph. We describe method developement to access the stellar and gas component of the spectrum without the strong nuclear emission to access the host galaxy properties also in the central region. It shows that integral field spectroscopy promises to be very efficient to study the gas distribution and its velocity field, and also spatially resolved stellar population in the host galaxies also of luminous AGN.
We report on integral field spectrocopy observations, performed with the PPAK module of the PMAS spectrograph, covering a field-of-view of ~74''X64'' centered on the core of the galaxy cluster Abell 2218. A total of 43 objects were detected, 27 of them galaxies at the redshift of the cluster. We deblended and extracted the integrated spectra of each of the objects in the field using an adapted version of galfit for 3D spectroscopy (galfit3d). We use these spectra, in combination with morphological parameters derived from deep HST/ACS images, to study the stellar population and evolution of gal…
This paper describes the general characteristics of raw data from fiber-fed spectrographs in general and fiber-fed IFUs in particular. The different steps of the data reduction are presented, and the techniques used to address the unusual characteristics of these data are described in detail. These techniques have been implemented in a specialized software package, R3D, developed to reduce fiber-based integral field spectroscopy (IFS) data. The package comprises a set of command-line routines adapted for each of these steps, suitable for creating pipelines. The routines have been tested agains…
The kinematics of galactic rings were studied with a scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer mounted in the multi-mode focal reducer SCORPIO (Afanasiev & Moiseev 2005) at the SAO RAS 6-m telescope. The analysis of the ionized gas velocity fields allows us to understand the nature of the ring formation in several galaxies. The different types of the rings in the presented objects (resonanced, collisional, polar) were caused by the various sorts of interactions: merging, head-on collisions.
HH 110 and HH 262 are two Herbig-Haro jets with rather peculiar, chaotic morphology. In the two cases, no source suitable to power the jet has been detected along the outflow, at optical or radio wavelengths. Both, previous data and theoretical models, suggest that these objects are tracing an early stage of an HH jet/dense cloud interaction. We present the first results of the integral field spectroscopy observations made with the PMAS spectrophotometer (with the PPAK configuration) of these two turbulent jets. New data of the kinematics in several characteristic HH emission lines are shown. …
Spectroscopic measurements of emission line ratios and velocities are presented for ionized gas across the central plane of NGC 55, a late-type galaxy in the Sculptor group. The low metallicity in NGC 55 leads to relatively low line ratios of [S II]/H$α$ and [N II]/H$α$ for H II regions as well as the diffuse ionized gas. These are the first spectroscopical measurements of line ratios in ionized gas exterior to the stellar disc of NGC 55. Analysis of the line ratios and the relative velocities of different features suggests that photoionization is a plausible explanation for the ionization of …
The magnetic flare avalanches model of Poutanen & Fabian for X-ray variability of accreting black holes is combined with computations of vertical structure of illuminated accretion discs in hydrostatic equilibrium. The latter predict the existence of a hot ionized skin, due to the thermal instability of X-ray illuminated plasma. The presence of such ionized skin, with properties dependent on disc radius, introduces a dependence of the emitted X-ray spectrum on the position on the disc. If the position is related to the time scale of the flares, the X-ray energy spectra (both the primary contin…
We present the 0.1-200 keV BeppoSAX spectrum of MR 2251-178 observed at two epochs in 1998 separated by 5 months. Both epochs show identical spectral shape and X-ray flux. Analysis of the combined spectra allow us to confirm the presence of the ionized Fe K-alpha line detected by ASCA and to test the presence of reflection from ionized material. The best self-consistent spectral fit is obtained when including a contribution from a mildly ionized reflector (Xi(0.01-100) ~ 1625 erg cm s-1, i.e. U(0.1-10) ~ 0.14) with a reflection fraction R_ion ~ 0.11. An exponential cut-off to the direct power-…
We have investigated the structure, kinematics, and emission spectrum of the ionized gas in the synchrotron superbubble in the irregular galaxy IC 10 based on observations with the 6-m Special Astrophysical Observatory telescope with the SCORPIO focal reducer in three modes: direct imaging in the [SII](6717+6731)A lines, long-slit spectroscopy, and spectroscopy with a scanning Fabry--Perot interferometer. We have identified a bright (in the [SII] lines) filamentary optical shell and determined its expansion velocity, mass, and kinetic energy. The nature of the object is discussed.
Integral field optical spectroscopy with the INTEGRAL system has been used to investigate for the first time the two-dimensional kinematic and ionization properties of the extended, warm ionized gas in Arp 220 over an area of 28 kpc by 15 kpc. The structure of the ionized gas is divided into well identified regions associated with the X-ray emitting plumes and extended lobes. Changes in the ionization state of the gas along the major axis of the plumes are detected, in particular in the outer regions of the northwestern plume where the transition between the main stellar body of the galaxy and…
We present recent results from spectroscopic data and modeling of the biconical ionized gas in the Seyfert-2 galaxy NGC 4388. A field of ~2.6 x 2.4 kpc centered on the nucleus has been observed by means of the modern technique of integral field spectroscopy. The analysis of more than two hundred spectra allowed to study the physical characteristics of the gas in the surroundings of the active nucleus. The South-West ionization cone, revealed by the [O III]5007/H-beta excitation map, shows high emission line ratios not completely supported by simple photoionization. Composite models which accou…
Two long-slit spectra of the diffuse ionized gas in NGC 891 are presented. The first reveals variations parallel to the major axis in emission line ratios in the halo gas at z=700 pc. It is found that filaments of Halpha emission show lower values of [NII]/Halpha, [SII]/Halpha and [OI]/Halpha. Although this result is expected if the filaments represent the walls of evacuated chimneys, it merely reflects a more general correlation of these ratios with Halpha surface brightness along the slit, and may simply arise from radiation dilution effects. Much more interesting information on the nature o…
VLT on-axis optical spectroscopy of the z=0.144 radio-loud quasar HE 1434-1600 is presented. The spatially resolved spectra of the host galaxy are deconvolved and separated from those of the central quasar in order to study the dynamics of the stars and gas as well as the physical conditions of the ISM. We find that the host of HE 1434-1600 is an elliptical galaxy that resides in a group of at least 5 member galaxies, and that most likely experienced a recent collision with its nearest companion. Compared with other quasar host galaxies, HE 1434-1600 has a highly ionized ISM. The ionization st…
We have obtained sensitive long-slit spectra of Diffuse Ionized Gas (DIG) in the Andromeda Galaxy, M31, covering the wavelength range of 3550-6850 Angs. By co-adding extracted DIG spectra, we reached a 1 sigma uncertainty of 9.3E-19 ergs/s/cm^{2}/arcsec^{2} corresponding to .46 pc/cm^{6} in Emission Measure. We present average spectra of DIG at four brightness levels with Emission Measures ranging from 9 to 59 pc/cm^{6}. We present the first measurements of [OII]\lambda3727 and [OIII]\lambda5007 of the truly diffuse ionized medium in the disk of an external spiral galaxy. We find that I_[OII]/…
The central stars of planetary nebulae (PNe) are natural targets for FUSE due to their UV brightness. The FUSE spectra of many PNe show absorption features due to circumstellar material in species ranging from H_2 and neutrals in the photodissociation region (PDR) to ions resident in the H II region. We report results from a program designed to search for nebular components in the H_2 Lyman and Werner resonance lines that are responsible for the fluorescent excitation of H_2 in strong FUV radiation fields. Our failure to detect H_2 in absorption in several PNe with strong near-infrared H_2 emi…
In order to examine the excitation and ionization mechanism of extraplanar diffuse ionized gas (DIG) we have obtained optical longslit spectra of seven edge-on spiral galaxies. In four objects the brightest emission lines can be traced out to distances of typically 1.5 kpc above the disk. For NGC1963 and NGC3044 line ratios such as [NII]6583/Ha or [SII]6717/Ha as well as [OIII]5007/Hb could be measured for the halo DIG. This allows us to discuss the DIG in the halo of these objects in the framework of diagnostic diagrams. For these two objects, the line ratios of [OIII]5007/Hb decrease with in…
We present integral field spectroscopy of a small sample of radio-loud quasars at intermediate redshift (0.26<z<0.60), most of which are associated with large radio sources. All have oxygen line emission extended over tens of kiloparcsecs, and these nebulae display a diverse range in both morphology and kinematic behaviour. Two quasars show 'plumes' of extended line emission, two show a clumpy structure and a further one shows a smooth distribution. There is no clear pattern with regard to the distribution of the ionized gas in relation to the radio source axis; the extended emission-line regi…
We present the first spatially resolved spectroscopic observations of the recently discovered quadruple QSO and gravitational lens HE0435-1223. Using the Potsdam Multi-Aperture Spectrophotometer (PMAS), we show that all four QSO components have very similar but not identical spectra. In particular, the spectral slopes of components A, B, and D are indistinguishable, implying that extinction due to dust plays no major role in the lensing galaxy. While also the emission line profiles are identical within the error bars, as expected from lensing, the equivalent widths show significant differences…
We have determined the radial velocities of the [O III] emitting gas in the inner narrow-line region (NLR) of the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 1068, along a slit at position angle of 202 degrees, from STIS observations at a spatial resolution of 0.1 arcsec and a spectral resolving power of approximately 1000. We use these data to investigate the kinematics of the NLR within 6 arcsec (430 pc) of the nucleus. The emission-line knots show evidence for radial acceleration, to a projected angular distance of 1.7 arcsec in most cases, followed by deceleration that approaches the systemic velocity at a proje…
We present infrared spectroscopy from the Spitzer Space Telescope at one disk position and two positions at a height of 1 kpc from the disk in the edge-on spiral NGC 891, with the primary goal of studying halo ionization. Our main result is that the [Ne III]/[Ne II] ratio, which provides a measure of the hardness of the ionizing spectrum free from the major problems plaguing optical line ratios, is enhanced in the extraplanar pointings relative to the disk pointing. Using a 2D Monte Carlo-based photo-ionization code which accounts for the effects of radiation field hardening, we find that this…
We observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 4593 with the Chandra high energy transmission gratings and present a detailed analysis of the soft X-ray spectrum. We measure strong absorption lines from He-like O, Ne, Mg, Si, H-like N, O, Ne, Mg, Si and highly ionized Fe XIX-XXV. Only the NLya, OLya and MgLya lines appear to be marginally resolved. We identify a spectral feature at $\sim 0.707$ keV with a neutral Fe L edge, which might suggest that there is dust along the line-of-sight to \ngc. Neutral Si absorption, which might also be expected from absorption due to dust is present (though not signifi…
This paper presents observations of an extended Lyman-alpha emission nebula surrounding the galaxy responsible for the Damped Lyman-alpha Absorption (DLA) line in the spectrum of the quasar Q2233+131. With the Potsdam Multi Aperture Spectrophotometer (PMAS) we measure the properties of the extended Ly-alpha emission in an area of 3"* 5" having a total line flux of (2.8+/-0.3)*10^{-16} erg cm-2 s-1, which at redshift z=3.15 corresponds to a luminosity of (2.4 -0.2/+0.3)*10^{43} erg s-1 and a size of 23 times 38 kpc. The location of the emission is spatially coincident with the previously detect…
We report here the results of deep optical spectroscopy of the very extended emission-line region (VEELR) found serendipitously around the Seyfert 2 galaxy NGC 4388 in the Virgo cluster using the Subaru Telescope. The H-alpha recession velocities of most of the filaments of the region observed are highly blue-shifted with respect to the systemic velocity of the galaxy. The velocity field is complicated, and from the kinematic and morphological points of view, there seem to be several streams of filaments: low velocity (v = -100 km/s) filaments, high velocity (v = -300 km/s) filaments, and a ve…
Integral field optical spectroscopy with the INTEGRAL fiber-based systemis used to map the extended ionized regions and gas flows in Mrk 273, one of the closest Ultraluminous Infrared galaxies (ULIRGs). The Hbeta and [OIII]5007 maps show the presence of two distinct regions separated by 4'' (3.1 kpc) along position angle (PA) 240. The northeastern region coincides with the optical nucleus of the galaxy and shows the spectral characteristics of LINERs. The southwestern region is dominated by [OIII] emission and is classified as a Seyfert 2. Therefore, in the optical, Mrk 273 is an ultraluminous…
We have collected one-dimensional raster-scan observations of the active star-forming region Sharpless 171 (S171), a typical HII region-molecular cloud complex, with the three spectrometers (LWS, SWS, and PHT-S) on board ISO. We have detected 8 far-infrared fine-structure lines, [OIII] 52um, [NIII] 57um, [OI] 63um, [OIII] 88um, [NII] 122um, [OI] 146um, [CII] 158um, and [SiII] 35um together with the far-infrared continuum and the H2 pure rotation transition (J=5-3) line at 9.66um. The physical properties of each of the three phases detected, highly-ionized, lowly-ionized and neutral, are invest…
We observed the bright phase of the 2003 outburst of the Galactic black hole candidate H 1743-322 in X-rays simultaneously with Chandra and RXTE on four occasions. The Chandra/HETGS spectra reveal narrow, variable (He-like) Fe XXV and (H-like) Fe XXVI resonance absorption lines. In the first observation, the Fe XXVI line has a FWHM of 1800 +/- 400 km/s and a blue-shift of 700 +/- 200 km/s, suggesting that the highly ionized medium is an outflow. Moreover, the Fe XXV line is observed to vary significantly on a timescale of a few hundred seconds in the first observation, which corresponds to the…
We present Gemini Multiobject Spectrograph integral field spectroscopy of the extended emission-line region associated with quasar 3C 249.1. The kinematics of the ionized gas measured from the [O III] $λ$5007 line is rather complex and cannot be explained globally by a simple dynamical model, but some clouds can be modeled individually as having locally linear velocity gradients. The temperatures of the ionized gas appear uniform (varying from ~12000 to 15000 K), while the densities vary from a few tens to a few hundreds cm^{-3}. The emission mechanism of all of the emission clouds, as indicat…
We present imaging Fabry-Perot observations of Halpha emission in the nearly edge-on spiral galaxy NGC 5775. We have derived a rotation curve and a radial density profile along the major axis by examining position-velocity (PV) diagrams from the Fabry-Perot data cube as well as a CO 2-1 data cube from the literature. PV diagrams constructed parallel to the major axis are used to examine changes in azimuthal velocity as a function of height above the midplane. The results of this analysis reveal the presence of a vertical gradient in azimuthal velocity. The magnitude of this gradient is approxi…
We observed the Seyfert 1 galaxy Mrk 509 simultaneously with Chandra/HETG, HST/STIS and RXTE. We measure strong absorption lines from He-like Ne and Mg, and from H-like N, O, and Ne. The lines are unresolved except for Ne Lya and Ne IX(r). The absorption-line profiles are blueshifted by ~200 km/s with respect to the systemic velocity of Mrk 509, and there is a hint of another component near systemic. The soft X-ray spectrum can be described in remarkable detail with a simple, single-zone photoionized absorber with a column density of 2.06 (+0.39,-0.45) x 10^21 cm^-2 and an ionization parameter…
Long-slit 8-13 um spectroscopy of the nebula around NGC 1333 SVS reveals spatial variations in the strength and shape of emission features which are probably produced by polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs). Close to SVS 3, the 11.2 um feature develops an excess at ~10.8-11.0 um, and a feature appears at ~10 um. These features disappear with increasing distance from the central source, and they show striking similarities to recent laboratory data of PAH cations, providing the first identification of emission features arising specifically from ionized PAHs in the interstellar medium.
In this work we investigate the stellar population, metallicity distribution and ionized gas in the elliptical galaxy NGC 5044, using long-slit spectroscopy and a stellar population synthesis method. We found differences in the slope of metal-line profiles along the galaxy which suggests an enhancement of alpha elements, particularly towards the central region. The presence of a non-thermal ionization source, such as a low-luminosity AGN and/or shock ionization, is implied by the large values of the ratio (N II])Ha observed in all sampled regions. However, the emission lines observed in the ex…
We report on the filament of ionized gas found at the NE periphery of M87, the second brightest elliptical galaxy in the Virgo cluster. The object lies at 3.16 arcmin (15.7 kpc) projected distance of the nucleus of M87, and it coincides in position with the Eastern radio lobe of M87. Long slit spectroscopy confirmed the gaseus nature of this object, showing Hbeta, [OIII], [OI], [NII], Halpha and [SII] lines, without any underlying continuum. The redshift of the object, V = 1170+-25 km/s, agrees with the velocity of M87 itself (V = 1280 km/s), and with the bulk of the ionized material found nea…
We introduce crowded field integral field (3D) spectrophotometry as a useful technique for the study of resolved stellar populations in nearby galaxies. As a methodological test, we present a pilot study with selected extragalactic planetary nebulae (XPN) in the bulge of M31, demonstrating how 3D spectroscopy is able to improve the limited accuracy of background subtraction which one would normally obtain with classical slit spectroscopy. It is shown that due to the absence of slit effects, 3D is a most suitable technique for spectrophometry. We present spectra and line intensities for 5 XPN i…
Strong mass loss off stars at the tip of the asymptotic giant branch (AGB) profoundly affects properties of these stars and their surroundings, including the subsequent planetary nebula (PN) stage. With this study we wanted to determine physical properties of mass loss by studying weakly emitting halos, focusing on objects in the galactic disk. Halos surround the, up to several thousand times, brighter central regions of PNe. Young halos, specifically, still contain information of the preceeding final mass loss stage on the AGB. In the observations we used the method of integral field spectros…
The presence of non-circular and off-plane gas motions is frequently observed in the inner regions of disk galaxies. We have measured with integral-field spectroscopy the surface-brightness distribution and kinematics of the ionized gas in NGC 2855 and NGC 7049. These two early-type spiral galaxies were selected to possibly host a kinematically-decoupled gaseous component in orthogonal rotation with respect to the galaxy disk. We have modeled the ionized-gas kinematics and distribution of both galaxies assuming that the gaseous component is distributed either on two orthogonally-rotating disks…
We use long-slit spectroscopy along the major axis of a sample of 23 nearby disk galaxies to study the kinematic properties of the ionized-gas component in their inner regions. For each galaxy, we derive the position-velocity diagram of the ionized gas from its emission lines. We discuss the variety of shapes observed in such position-velocity diagrams by comparing the gas velocity gradient, velocity dispersion and integrated flux measured in the inner (r +/-1'') and outer regions (r +/-4''). This kind of analysis allows the identification of galaxies which are good candidates to host a circum…
X-ray absorption spectroscopy provides a potentially powerful tool in determining the metal abundances in various phases of the interstellar medium (ISM). We present a case study of the sight line toward 4U 1820-303 (Galactic coordinates l, b=2.79, -7.91 and distance = 7.6 kpc), based on Chandra Grating observations. The detection of OI, OII, OIII, OVII, OVIII, and NeIX Kalpha absorption lines allows us to measure the atomic column densities of the neutral, warm ionized, and hot phases of the ISM through much of the Galactic disk. By comparing these measurements with the 21 cm hydrogen emissio…
In this article we study the morphology, kinematics and ionization properties of the giant ionized gas nebulae surrounding two high redshift radio galaxies, 4C40.36 (z=2.27) and 4C48.48 (z=2.34).}{Integral Field Spectroscopy observations were taken using the PPAK bundle of the PMAS spectrograph, mounted on the 3.5m on the Calar Alto Observatory, in order to cover a field-of-view of 64" X 72" centered in each radio galaxy. The observations spanned over 5 nights, using two different spectral resolutions (with FWHM~4 AA and ~8 AA respectively), covering the optical wavelength range from ~3700 AA …
We present new imaging and spectroscopy of the post-red supergiant binary AFGL 4106. Coronographic imaging in H-alpha reveals the shape and extent of the ionized region in the circumstellar envelope (CSE). Echelle spectroscopy with the slit covering almost the entire extent of the CSE is used to derive the physical conditions in the ionized region and the optical depth of the dust contained within the CSE. The dust shell around AFGL 4106 is clumpy and mixed with ionized gas. H-alpha and [N II] emission is brightest from a thin bow-shaped layer just outside of the detached dust shell. On-going …
We describe the results of our spectroscopy for a sample of barred galaxies whose inner regions exhibit an isophotal twist commonly called a secondary bar. The line-of-sight velocity fields of the ionized gas and stars and the light-of-sight velocity dispersion fields of the stars were constructed from two-dimensional spectroscopy with the 6m Special Astrophysical Observatory telescope. We detected various types of non-circular motions of ionized gas: radial flows within large-scale bars, counter-rotation of the gas and stars at the center of NGC 3945, a polar gaseous disk in NGC 5850, etc. Ou…
We obtained a wide-band spectrum of the Compton-thick Seyfert 2 galaxy Mrk 3 with Suzaku. The observed spectrum was clearly resolved into weak, soft power-law emission, a heavily absorbed power-law component, cold reflection, and many emission lines. The heavily absorbed component, absorbed by gas with a column density of 1.1x10^24 cm^-2, has an intrinsic 2--10 keV luminosity of ~1.6x10^43 erg s^-1, and is considered to be direct emission from the Mrk 3 nucleus. The reflection component was interpreted as reflection of the direct light off cold, thick material; the reflection fraction $R$ was …
We report on two simultaneous XMM-Newton and INTEGRAL observations of the microquasar GRO J1655-40 during the 2005 outburst when the source was in its high-soft state. The 0.3-200 keV spectra are complex with an overall continuum which may be modeled using an absorbed blackbody together with a weak, steep, power-law component. In addition, there is evidence for the presence of both a relativistically broadened Fe K line and a highly photo-ionized absorber. The photo-ionized absorber is responsible for strong K absorption lines of Fe XXV and Fe XXVI in the EPIC pn spectra and blue-shifted (v = …
The calculations of the ratios of the Helium-like ion X-ray lines from C V to Si XIII are revisited in order to apply the results to density, temperature and ionization process diagnostics of data from high-resolution spectroscopy of the new generation of X-ray satellites: Chandra and XMM-Newton. Comparing to earlier computations, Porquet & Dubau (2000), the best experimental values are used for radiative transition probabilities. The influence of an external radiation field (photo-excitation), the contribution from unresolved dielectronic satellite lines and the optical depth are taken into a…
We detect a fast outflow of neutral and ionized gas with velocities up to about 1000 km/s from the central region of radio galaxy 3C 293. With optical spectroscopy we locate the bulk of the ionized gas outflow at the position of a bright radio hot-spot in the inner radio jet, about 1 kpc east of the nucleus. Given the presence of large amounts of cold gas and the distorted morphology of the radio jet in this region, we argue that the ISM is pushed out by a severe interaction with the radio plasma. The similarity of the outflow of HI with the ionized gas outflow that we see at the position of t…
The long and relatively faint gamma-ray burst GRB 060605 detected by \emph{Swift}/BAT lasted about 20 sec. Its afterglow could be observed with \emph{Swift}/XRT for nearly 1 day, while \emph{Swift}/UVOT could detect the afterglow during the first 6 hours after the event. Here, we report on integral field spectroscopy of its afterglow performed with PMAS/PPak mounted at the Calar Alto 3.5 m telescope. In addition, we report on a detailed analysis of XRT and UVOT data and on the results of deep late-time VLT observations that reveal the GRB host galaxy. We find that the burst occurred at a redsh…
We have considered some results concerning gas and stars kinematics of nearby galaxies recently obtained on the SAO RAS 6m telescope using the panoramic spectroscopy methods. The circumnuclear regions of the galaxies were observed with integral-field spectrograph MPFS. The large-scale ionized gas kinematics was studied with the scanning Fabry-Perot interferometer (FPI) in the multi-mode focal reducer SCORPIO. The main attention is given for kinematically decoupled regions in the galaxies: bars, spirals, polar disks and rings.
We present results of Fabry-Perot and long-slit spectroscopy of the peculiar galaxy Arp 10. The ionized gas velocity field shows evidence for significant radial motions in both outer and inner galactic rings. Long-slit spectroscopy reveals gradients of age and metallicity of stellar population in agreement with the propagating nature of star formation in the galaxy. We present strong evidence that a small ``knot'' at 5 arcsec from the center of Arp 10 is its dwarf elliptic satellite, the most probable ``intruder'' responsible for triggering the expanding rings in Arp 10.
This paper presents results from spectral observations of Ton S180 using Chandra and ASCA. The data confirm the presence of the soft excess but the Chandra LETG spectrum reveals it to be broad and smooth, rather than resolved into individual emission lines. This excess may represent either a primary or reprocessed continuum component or a blend of broad lines from an ionized accretion disk. The occurrence of a similar feature in five other NLSy1s leads us to conclude that this soft X-ray component may be a characteristic of sources accreting at a very high rate. The X-ray spectrum shows no evi…
The Warm Ionized Medium (WIM), also referred to as Diffuse Ionized Gas, contains most of the mass of interstellar medium in ionized form, contributing as much as 30% of the total atomic gas mass in the solar neighborhood. The advent of CCDs has enabled unprecedented study of this medium in external galaxies, probing a variety of environments. In particular, we can derive the morphology of the WIM, its distribution across disks, and the correlation with other Population I material. Spectroscopy of the WIM makes it possible to test various ionization models. I will review here our current unders…
We present our ongoing work on integral field spectroscopy of three prototypical HII galaxies: IIZw70, IIZw71 and IZw18. The data are mainly used to study the ionized gas and stellar clusters. Our main goal is to investigate the presence of spatial variations in ionization structure indicators, physical conditions and gaseous metal abundances, in these galaxies. Maps of the relevant emission lines and a preliminary analysis of the ionization structure are presented for IIZw70.
The luminous infrared galaxy Arp299 (IC694+NGC3690) is studied using optical integral field spectroscopy obtained with the INTEGRAL system, together with archival Hubble Space Telescope WFPC2 and NICMOS images. The stellar and ionized gas morphology shows lambda-dependent variations due to the combined effects of the dust internal extinction, and the nature and spatial distribution of the different ionizing sources. The two-dimensional ionization maps have revealed an off-nuclear conical structure of about 4 kpc in length, characterized by high excitation conditions and a radial gradient in th…
The determination of chemical abundances in ionized gas nebulae is based on the detection of auroral emission lines, from which it is possible to deduce the line temperatures of several ions. These lines are weak in low excitation objects, so its measurement is only possible in great aperture telescopes. The GTC would allow to plan a comprehenssive study of chemical abundances in such objects from mid-high resolution spectra, what would give more accurate observational restrictions to models of chemical evolution.
The stellar population, metallicity distribution and ionized gas in the elliptical galaxies NGC 6868 and NGC 5903 are investigated in this paper by means of long-slit spectroscopy and stellar population synthesis. Lick indices in both galaxies present a negative gradient indicating an overabundance of Fe, Mg, Na and TiO in the central parts with respect to the external regions. Concerning the emitting gas conspicuously detected in NGC 6868, we test three hypotheses as ionizing source: an H II region, post-AGB stars and an Active Galactic Nucleus (AGN). Diagnostic diagrams involving the ratios …
A detailed analysis on the physical conditions of the Interstellar Medium in the main body of the Local Group dwarf irregular galaxy IC 10 is carried out using long-slit spectroscopy. Maps of the excitation, the H$α$ flux, [NII]/H$α$ and [SII]/H$α$ are presented. The Diffuse Ionized Gas inside the galaxy is studied. We found that the spectral characteristics are not similar to those for spiral galaxies: the values of the ratios [NII]/H$α$ and [SII]/H$α$ are not as large as in spiral galaxies but the excitation is much larger. These values, especially the large excitation, can be explained by p…
We analyze a 137 ks exposure X-ray spectrum of the Seyfert 1 galaxy NGC 5548 obtained with the XMM-Newton Reflection Grating Spectrometer. Due to the long exposure time, the spectrum is of higher statistical quality than the previous observations of this AGN. Therefore, we detect for the first time in NGC 5548 inner-shell transitions from O III to O VI ions, and the Unresolved Transition Array of M-shell iron. The warm absorber found from this X-ray observation spans three orders of magnitude in ionization parameter. We detect O III, which is as lowly ionized as the warm absorber detected in t…
Integral field optical spectroscopy with the INTEGRAL fiber-fed system and HST optical imaging are used to map the complex stellar and warm ionized gas structure in the ultraluminous infrared galaxy IRAS 12112+0305. Images reconstructed from wavelength-delimited extractions of the integral field spectra reveal that the observed ionized gas distribution is decoupled from the stellar main body of the galaxy, with the dominant continuum and emission-line regions separated by projected distances of up to 7.5 kpc. The two optical nuclei are detected as apparently faint emission-line regions, and th…
High-resolution UV spectroscopy of low-z QSOs with the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph and the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer has indicated that O VI absorption-line systems provide a valuable probe of the low-z intergalactic medium. These observations and their implications are briefly reviewed. Though still uncertain due to the small sample, the number of O VI absorbers per unit redshift is quite high, and these absorbers appear to trace an important baryon reservoir. The O VI systems are intervening; they are highly displaced from the background QSO redshifts and are correlated…
