Aims. We are trying to probe conditions in the youngest super star clusters, those still embedded in dense obscuring clouds. Methods. The hydrogen recombination lines in the radio and infrared can be observed through the obscuration, as the optical and UV lines cannot, and give us the kinematics of the ionized gas. Results. The line profiles of the clusters resemble superpositions of the lines of many very young ultra-compact or hyper-compact HII regions. This can be explained if each OB star is individually embedded in dense material which it is accreting, even as it ionizes. Conclusions. We speculate on what this implies for the status and evolutionary state of cluster stars.
We have analysed the infrared hydrogen recombination lines of a sample of well studied hot massive stars observed with the Infrared Space Observatory. Our sample contains stars from several classes of objects, whose circumstellar environment is believed to be dominated by an ionized stellar wind (the Luminous Blue Variables) or by a dense disk-like geometry (Be stars and B[e] stars). We show that hydrogen infrared recombination lines can be used as a diagnostic tool to constrain the geometry of the ionized circumstellar material. The line strengths are sensitive to the density of the emitting …
Radio recombination lines at a wavelength of 20 cm reveals the presence of an extended component of ionized gas of lower density in the Sgr A complex. This component extends well beyond the thermal `mini-spiral' SgrA-West, which seem to be embedded in it. The low-density component is present over the entire extent of SgrA East and possibly beyond and it is responsible for the turnover in the spectrum of SgrA East and the halo observed by Pedlar et al (1989) at 90 cm. The radial velocity of the extended ionized gas range from +50 km/s to -200 km/s with minima of emission near -50 and -150 km/s.…
Stellar clusters are born embedded within giant molecular clouds (GMCs) and during their formation and early evolution are often only visible at infrared wavelengths, being heavily obscured by dust. Over the last 15 years advances in infrared detection capabilities have enabled the first systematic studies of embedded clusters in galactic molecular clouds. In this article we review the current state of empirical knowledge concerning these extremely young protocluster systems. From a survey of the literature we compile the first extensive catalog of galactic embedded cluster properties. We use …
Despite valiant efforts over nearly five decades, attempts to determine the IMF over a complete mass range for galactic field stars and in open clusters have proved difficult. Infrared imaging observations of extremely young embedded clusters coupled with Monte Carlo modeling of their luminosity functions are improving this situation and providing important new contributions to our fundamental knowledge of the IMF and its universality in both space and time.
We study both analytically and numerically the disruptive effect of instantaneous gas removal from an embedded cluster. We setup a calculation based on the stellar velocity distribution function, to compute the fraction of stars that remain bound once the cluster has ejected the gas and is out of equilibrium. We find tracks of bound mass-fraction vs star formation efficiency similar to those obtained with N-body calculations. We use these to argue that embedded clusters must develop high-binding energy cores if they are to survive as bound clusters despite a star formation rate as low as 20 pe…
We present near-infrared $J$, $H$, and $K$ images of four embedded stellar clusters in the Galaxy. We find a significant fraction of pre-main-sequence stars present in at least one of the clusters. For the clusters dominated by main-sequence stars, we determine the initial mass function (IMF) both by using the $K$ luminosity function and a global extinction correction and by deriving individual extinction corrections for each star based on their placement in the $K$ vs. $H-K$ color-magnitude diagram. Based on our IMFs we find a significant discrepancy between the mean IMF derived via the diffe…
We present deep near-infrared (J, H, Ks) images toward an embedded cluster which lies in a C18O clump in the cloud C of the Vela Molecular Ridge. This cluster has at least ~ 350 members and a radius of ~ 0.5 pc. The stellar surface number density is approximately 3000 stars pc^-2 in the central 0.1 pc x 0.1 pc region of the cluster. This is much higher than most of the young clusters within 1 kpc of the Sun. From the comparison of the luminosity function and near-infrared excess fraction with those of other embedded clusters, we estimate that the age of this cluster is approximately 2-3 Myr. T…
The paper presents a simplified formula to determine an electron temperature, Te(He I), for planetary nebulae (PNe) using the He I 7281/6678 line flux ratio. In our previous studies of Te(He I) (Zhang et al. 2005), we used the He I line emission coefficients given by Benjamin et al. (1999). Here we examine the results of using more recent atomic data presented by Porter et al. (2005). A good agreement is shown, suggesting that the effect of uncertainties of atomic data on the resultant Te(He I) is negligible. We also present an analytical formula to derive electron temperature using the He I d…
Electron temperatures derived from the \ion{He}{1} recombination line ratios, designated $T_{\rm e}$(\ion{He}{1}), are presented for 48 planetary nebulae (PNe). We study the effect that temperature fluctuations inside nebulae have on the $T_{\rm e}$(\ion{He}{1}) value. We show that a comparison between $T_{\rm e}$(\ion{He}{1}) and the electron temperature derived from the Balmer jump of the \ion{H}{1} recombination spectrum, designated $T_{\rm e}$(\ion{H}{1}), provides an opportunity to discriminate between the paradigms of a chemically homogeneous plasma with temperature and density variation…
The young stellar population data of the Perseus, Ophiuchus and Serpens molecular clouds are obtained from the Spitzer c2d legacy survey in order to investigate the spatial structure of embedded clusters using the nearest neighbour and minimum spanning tree method. We identify the embedded clusters in these clouds as density enhancements and analyse the clustering parameter Q with respect to source luminosity and evolutionary stage. This analysis shows that the older Class 2/3 objects are more centrally condensed than the younger Class 0/1 protostars, indicating that clusters evolve from an in…
A large fraction of stars form within young embedded clusters, and these environments produce a substantial ultraviolet (UV) background radiation field, which can provide feedback on the star formation process. To assess the possible effects of young stellar clusters on the formation of their constituent stars and planets, this paper constructs the expected radiation fields produced by these clusters. We include both the observed distribution of cluster sizes $N$ in the solar neighborhood and an extended distribution that includes clusters with larger $N$. The paper presents distributions of t…
In the course of a mid-infrared imaging campaign of close-by active galaxies, we discovered the mid-infrared counterparts of bright compact radio sources in the central star-forming region of NGC1808. We aim at confirming that these sources are deeply embedded, young star clusters and at deriving some of their intrinsic properties. To complement the mid-infrared data, we have collected a set of near-infrared data with ISAAC at the VLT: J, Ks, and L' images, as well as low-resolution, long-slit spectra for three of the sources. Surprisingly, the new images unveil a near-infrared counterpart for…
An investigation based on data from the spatially complete 2MASS Survey reveals that a remarkable burst of clustered star formation is taking place throughout the south-east quadrant of the Rosette Molecular Cloud. Compact clusters are forming in a multi-seeded mode, in parallel and at various places. In addition, sparse aggregates of embedded young stars are extensively distributed. In this study, we report the primary results and implications for high-mass and clustered star formation in giant molecular clouds. In particular, we incorporate for the first time the birth of medium to low-mass …
We summarize the main results of a mid-IR photometric survey with ISO for a few nearby embedded clusters. The sensitivity and spatial resolution of ISOCAM provided a wonderful tool for studies of the youngest stellar clusters, which are still deeply embedded in their parent molecular clouds. Mid-IR photometry is found to be extremely efficient in finding all the young stellar objects (YSOs) with IR excesses, i.e. mainly T Tauri stars surrounded by circumstellar disks and also some Class I sources. The spatial distribution of these sources is highly clustered and even sub-clustered, with a tend…
We compiled a catalogue of infrared star clusters in the Galaxy, which are most of them embedded. It condenses the growing literature information. We also include in the sample infrared stellar groups which are less dense than star clusters, such as those embedded in the dark clouds Taurus-Auriga and Chamaleon I. We provide galactic and equatorial coordinates, angular dimensions, different designations and related objects such as nebulae. A total of 189 infrared clusters and 87 embedded stellar groups are included. A fraction of 25 % of the embedded clusters are projected close to each other i…
While conducting a near-infrared (NIR) survey of ``Digel Clouds'', which are thought to be located in the extreme outer Galaxy (EOG), Kobayashi & Tokunaga found star formation activity in ``Cloud 2'', a giant molecular cloud at the Galactic radius of ~ 20 kpc. Additional infrared imaging showed two embedded young clusters at the densest regions of the molecular cloud. Because the molecular cloud is located in the vicinity of a supernova remnant (SNR) HI shell, GSH 138-01-94, it was suggested that the star formation activity in Cloud 2 was triggered by this expanding HI shell. We obtained deep …
We present sub-arcsecond (0.35"-0.9"), near-infrared J,H,K band photometric observations of six fields along the W51 Giant Molecular Cloud (W51 GMC). Our observations reveal four new, embedded clusters and provide a new high-resolution (0.35") view of the W51IRS2 (G49.5-0.4) region. The cluster associated with G48.9-0.3 is found to be a double cluster enclosed in a nest of near-infrared nebulosity. We construct stellar surface density maps for four major clusters in the W51 GMC. These unveil the underlying hierarchical structure. Color-color and color-magnitude diagrams for each of these clust…
We analyze the embedded stellar content in the vicinity of the W3/W4/W5 HII regions using the FCRAO Outer Galaxy 12CO(J=1-0) Survey, the IRAS Point Source Catalog, published radio continuum surveys, and new near-infrared and molecular line observations. Thirty-four IRAS Point Sources are identified that have far-infrared colors characteristic of embedded star forming regions, and we have obtained K' mosaics and 13CO(J=1-0) maps for 32 of them. Ten of the IRAS sources are associated with an OB star and 19 with a stellar cluster, although three OB stars are not identified with a cluster. Half of…
We study the nature of the globular cluster (GC) candidates FSR 1603 and FSR 1755 selected from the catalogue of \citet{FSRcat}. Their properties are investigated with 2MASS field-star decontaminated photometry, which is used to build colour-magnitude diagrams (CMDs), and stellar radial density profiles (RDPs). FSR 1603 has the open cluster (OC) Ruprecht 101 as optical counterpart, and we show it to be a massive intermediate age cluster (IAC). Relevant parameters of FSR 1603 are the age $\approx1$ Gyr, distance from the Sun $\ds\approx2.7$ kpc, Galactocentric distance $\dgc\approx6.4$ kpc, cor…
Embedded clusters usually contain young stellar objects in different evolutionary stages. We investigate number ratios of objects in these classes in the star-forming regions rho Ophiuchi, Serpens, Taurus, Chamaeleon I, NGC 7129, IC 1396A, and IC 348. They are compared to the temporal evolution of young stars in numerical simulations of gravoturbulent fragmentation in order to constrain the models and to possibly determine the evolutionary stage of the clusters. It turns out that Serpens is the youngest, and IC 348 the most evolved cluster, although the time when the observations are best repr…
This is the first of a series of three papers on clustered star formation in the Rosette Molecular Complex. Here we investigate star formation in the interfacing layers between the expanding Rosette Nebula and its surrounding cloud, based on an analysis of the spatially complete and unbiased 2MASS data. Two medium-mass infrared clusters with ages of around 1 Myr are identified in the south and south-east arcs of the fragmented shell. The majority of the candidate cluster members in these radiation and pressure-confined regions are found to be almost uniformly distributed, roughly following the…
We report on the discovery of several compact regions of mid-infrared emission in the starforming circum nuclear disk of the starburst/Seyfert2 galaxy NGC7582. The compact sources do not have counterparts in the optical and near-infrared, suggesting that they are deeply embedded in dust. We use the [NeII]12.8 micron line emission to estimate the emission measure of the ionized gas, which in turn is used to assess the number of ionizing photons. Two of the brighter sources are found to have ionizing fluxes of ~2.5x10^52, whereas the fainter ones have ~1x10^52 photons/s. Comparing with a one Myr…
We report the discovery of a nearby, embedded cluster of young stellar objects, associated filamentary infrared dark cloud, and 4.5 micron shock emission knots from outflows detected in Spitzer/IRAC mid-infrared imaging of the Serpens-Aquila Rift obtained as part of the Spitzer Gould Belt Legacy Survey. We also present radial velocity measurements of the region from molecular line observations obtained with the Submillimeter Array (SMA) that suggest the cluster is co-moving with the Serpens Main embedded cluster 3 degrees to the north. We therefore assign it the same distance, 260 pc. The core…
A young open cluster is a 2-phase system: an ensemble of stars move in a gaseous medium (the mother molecular cloud). The dynamics and thermodynamics of the system, and so its evolution and final fate (is it stable or unstable?), strongly depends on the mutual feedback between gas and stars. We present an approach which consists in a (simplified) model where stars (N-bodies) move within a gaseous spherical molecular cloud. The two components influence each other through gravity and mass loss. Among other results (role of IMF, SFE, stellar background, etc.), we find that a significant fraction …
Star clusters are formed in molecular clouds which are believed to be the birth places of most stars. From recent observational data, Lada & Lada 2003 estimated that only 4% to 7% of the clusters embedded inside molecular clouds have survived. An important mechanism for the disruption of embedded (bound)-clusters is the dispersion of the parent cloud by UV radiation, stellar winds and/or supernova explosions. In this work we study the effect of this mechanism by N-body simulations. We find that most embedded-clusters survive for more than 30 Myr even when different initial conditions of the cl…
The Rosette Molecular Complex contains embedded clusters with diverse properties and origins. We have previously explored the shell mode of formation in the north (Regions A & B) and the massive concentrations in the ridge (Region C). Here, we explore star formation towards the south of the complex, Region D, based on data from the spatially complete 2 Micron All Sky Survey. We find that stars are forming prolifically throughout this region in a highly structured mode with both clusters and loose aggregates detected. The most prominent cluster (Region D1) lies in the north-center. This cluster…
We have detected the H92alpha radio recombination line from two dwarf starburst galaxies, NGC 5253 and He 2-10, using the Very Large Array. Both the line data as well as the radio continuum data are used to model the properties of the ionized gas in the centers of these galaxies. We consider a multi-density model for radio recombination lines and show why previous models, which were based on the assumption of gas at a single density, are valid in many situations. The models show that the ionized gas has a density of ~10^4 /cc in both galaxies, with an effective size of 2-10 pc and a total mass…
We present the results of a deep near-infrared imaging survey of the Rosette Complex. We studied the distribution of young embedded sources using a variation of the Nearest Neighbor Method applied to a carefully selected sample of near-infrared excess (NIRX) stars which trace the latest episode of star formation in the complex. Our analysis confirmed the existence of seven clusters previously detected in the molecular cloud, and identified four more clusters across the complex. We determined that 60% of the young stars in the complex and 86% of the stars within the molecular cloud are containe…
Deep I-band imaging to approximately I = 26.5 of the soft gamma-ray repeater SGR 1900+14 region has revealed a compact cluster of massive stars located only a few arcseconds from the fading radio source thought to be the location of the SGR (Frail, Kulkarni, & Bloom 1999). This cluster was previously hidden in the glare of the pair of M5 supergiant stars (whose light was removed by PSF subtraction) proposed by Vrba et al. (1996) as likely associated with the SGR 1900+14. The cluster has at least 13 members within a cluster radius of approximately 0.6 pc, based on an estimated distance of 12-15…
We report the discovery of a new young stellar cluster and molecular cloud located in the far outer Galaxy, seen towards IRAS 06361-0142, and we characterise their properties. Near-infrared images were obtained with VLT/ISAAC through JHKs filters, millimetre line observations of CO(1-0) were obtained with SEST, and VLA 6 cm continuum maps obtained from archive data. The cloud and cluster are located at a distance of 7 kpc and a Galactocentric distance of 15 kpc, well in the far outer Galaxy. Morphologically, IRAS 06361-0142 appears as a cluster of several tens of stars surrounded by a nearly s…
We present first results of XMM-Newton X-ray observations of the infrared cluster lying near the NGC 2071 reflection nebula in the Orion B region. This cluster is of interest because it is one of the closest regions known to harbor embedded high-mass stars. We report the discovery of hard X-ray emission from the dense central NGC 2071-IR subgroup which contains at least three high-mass young stellar objects (NGC 2071 IRS-1, IRS-2, and IRS-3). A prominent X-ray source is detected within 1 arcsecond of the infrared source IRS-1, which is thought to drive a powerful bipolar molecular outflow. The…
An analysis of the candidate embedded stellar systems in the reflection nebulae vdBH-RN26, vdBH-RN38, vdBH-RN53a, GGD20, ESO95-RN18 and NGC6595 is presented. Optical spectroscopic data from CASLEO (Argentina) in conjunction with near infrared photometry from the 2MASS Point Source Catalogue were employed. The analysis is based on source surface density, colour-colour and colour-magnitude diagrams together with theoretical pre-main sequence isochrones. We take into account the field population affecting the analysis by carrying out a statistical subtraction. The fundamental parameters for the s…
