It has been suggested by Diosi and Penrose that the occurrence of quantum state reduction in macroscopic objects is related to a manifestation of gravitational effects in quantum mechanics. Although within Penrose's framework the dynamics of the quantum state reduction is not prescribed, it was suggested that the so called Schrodinger-Newton equation can be used to at least identify the resulting classical end states. Here we analyze the extent to which the Schrodinger-Newton equation can be used as a model to generate a full, time dependent description of the quantum state reduction process. We find that when supplied with an imaginary gravitational potential, the Schrodinger-Newton equation offers a rationalisation for some of the hitherto unexplained characteristics of quantum state reduction. The description remains incomplete however, because it is unclear how to fully recover Born's rule.
Replacing the Newtonian coupling G by -iG, the Schrodinger-Newton equation becomes ``frictional''. Instead of the reversible Schrodinger-Newton equation, we advocate its frictional version to generate the set of pointer states for macroscopic quantum bodies.
In the reversible Schrodinger-Newton equation a complex Newton coupling G*exp(-i*alpha) is proposed in place of G. The equation becomes irreversible and all initial one-body states are expected to converge to solitonic stationary states. This feature is verified numerically. For two-body solutions we point out that an effective Newtonian interaction is induced by the imaginary mean-fields as if they were real. The effective strength of such induced gravity depends on the local wave functions of the participating distant bodies.
In the paper the Schrodinger equation (SE) with gravity term is developed and discussed. It is shown that the modified SE is valid for particles with mass m<M_P, M_P is the Planck mass, and contains the part which, we argue describes the pilot wave. For m \to M_P the modified SE has the solution with oscillatory term, i.e. strings. Key words: Schrodinger-Newton equation; Planck time; pilot wave.
The Eherenfest theorem states that Schrodinger representation of quantum mechanics (wave mechanics) reproduces Newton laws of motion in terms of expectation values. Remarkably, the contrary is considered elusive and, indeed, many authors have tried to obtain wave mechanics starting from other alternative frameworks of classical mechanics (for instance, Hamilton-Jacobi theory). Despite this common opinion, we present here a simple method to make Newtonian dynamics develop naturally into Schrodinger representation. The proof is based on the assumption of matter waves and is laid out in three fun…
We show that the Schrödinger-Newton equation, which describes the nonlinear time evolution of self-gravitating quantum matter, can be made compatible with the no-signaling requirement by elevating it to a stochastic differential equation. In the deterministic form of the equation, as studied so far, the nonlinearity would lead to diverging energy corrections for localized wave packets and would create observable correlations admitting faster-than-light communication. By regularizing the divergencies and adding specific random jumps or a specific Brownian noise process, the effect of the nonlin…
The scope of this paper is twofold. First, we derive rigorously a low-velocity and Galilei-covariant limit of the gravitoelectromagnetic (GEM) equations. Subsequently, these reduced GEM equations are coupled to the Schrödinger equation with gravitoelectric and gravitomagnetic potentials. The resulting extended Schrödinger-Newton equations constitute a minimal model where the three fundamental constants of nature ($G$, $\hbar$, and $c$) appear naturally. We show that the relativistic correction coming from the gravitomagnetic potential scales as the ratio of the mass of the system to the Planck…
In this paper we show that the Schrödinger-Newton equation for spherically symmetric gravitational fields can be derived in a WKB-like expansion in 1/c from the Einstein-Klein-Gordon and Einstein-Dirac system.
The Schrödinger-Newton equation has been proposed as an experimentally testable alternative to quantum gravity, accessible at low energies. It contains self-gravitational terms, which slightly modify the quantum dynamics. Here we show that it distorts the spectrum of a harmonic system. Based on this effect, we propose an optomechanical experiment with a trapped microdisc to test the Schrödinger-Newton equation, and we show that it can be realized with existing technology.
We propose a stochastic modification of the Schrödinger-Newton equation which takes into account the effect of extrinsic spacetime fluctuations. We use this equation to demonstrate gravitationally induced decoherence of two gaussian wave-packets, and obtain a decoherence criterion similar to those obtained in the earlier literature in the context of effects of gravity on the Schrödinger equation.
Using a variational approach based on a Lagrangian formulation and Gaussian trial functions, we derive a simple dynamical system that captures the main features of the time-dependent Schrödinger-Newton equations. With little analytical or numerical effort, the model furnishes information on the ground state density and energy eigenvalue, the linear frequencies, as well as the nonlinear long-time behaviour. Our results are in good agreement with those obtained through analytical estimates or numerical simulations of the full Schrödinger-Newton equations.
We derive the classical equations of hydrodynamic type (Euler equation and the continuity equation) from which the Schrodinger equation follows as a limit case. It is shown that the statistical ensemble corresponding to quantum system and described by the Schrodinger equation, can be considered as an inviscid gas obeying the ideal gas law with quickly oscillating sign-alternating temperature. This statistical ensemble performs the complex movements consisting of smooth average movement and fast oscillations. It is shown that average movements of statistical ensemble are described by Schrodinge…
The necessity of quantising the gravitational field is still subject to an open debate. In this paper we compare the approach of quantum gravity, with that of a fundamentally semi-classical theory of gravity, in the weak-field non-relativistic limit. We show that, while in the former case the Schrödinger equation stays linear, in the latter case one ends up with the so-called Schrödinger-Newton equation, which involves a nonlinear, non-local gravitational contribution. We further discuss that the Schrödinger-Newton equation does not describe the collapse of the wave-function, although it was i…
The inception of a universal gravity-related irreversibility took place originally in quantum cosmology. The ultimate reason of universal irreversibility is thought to come from black holes close to the Planck scale. Completely different instances of irreversibilities are quantum state reductions unrelated to gravity or relativity but related to measurement devices. However, an intricate relationship between Newton gravity and quantized matter might result in fundamental and spontaneous quantum state reduction --- in the non-relativistic Schrödinger-Newton context. The above two concepts of fu…
It is explicitly shown that a one-family parameter model reproducing the nonlinear Newton-Schrödinger equation as the parameter goes to infinity is free from any causality violation problem for any finite value of it. This circumstance arises from the intrinsic mechanism of spontaneous state reduction of the model, absent in the Newton-Schrödinger limit. A specific ideal EPR experiment involving a superposition of two distinct CM's position states of a massive lump is analyzed, showing recovered compatibility with QM. Besides, the new framework suggests a soft version of the Many Worlds Interp…
In this note we show that Newton-Schrödinger Equations (NSEs) [arXiv:1210.0457 and references therein] do not follow from general relativity (GR) and quantum field theory (QFT) by way of two considerations: 1) Taking the nonrelativistic limit of the semiclassical Einstein equation, the central equation of relativistic semiclassical gravity, a fully covariant theory based on GR+QFT with self-consistent backreaction of quantum matter on the spacetime dynamics; 2) Working out a model [see C. Anastopoulos and B. L. Hu, Class. Quant. Grav. 30, 165007 (2013), arXiv:1305.5231] with a matter scalar fi…
In this article, we investigate Bohm's view of quantum theory, especially Bohm's quantum potential, from a new perspective. We develop a quasi-Newtonian approach to Bohmian mechanics. We show that to arrive at Bohmian formulation of quantum mechanics, there is no necessity to start from the Schrödinger equation. We also obtain an equation that restricts the possible forms of quantum potential and determines the functional form of it without appealing to the wave function and the Schrödinger equation. Finally, we discuss about the significance of quantum potential in the conceptual structure of…
The Schrödinger-Newton [SN] equation describes the effect of self-gravity on the evolution of a quantum system, and it has been proposed that gravitationally induced decoherence drives the system to one of the stationary solutions of the SN equation. However, the equation by itself lacks a decoherence mechanism, because it does not possess any stochastic feature. In the present work we derive a stochastic modification of the Schrödinger-Newton equation, starting from the Einstein-Langevin equation in the theory of stochastic semiclassical gravity. We specialize this equation to the case of a s…
The Schrödinger-Newton model is a nonlinear system obtained by coupling the linear Schrödinger equation of canonical quantum mechanics with the Poisson equation of Newtonian mechanics. In this paper we investigate the effects of dark energy on the time-dependent Schrödinger-Newton equations by including a new source term with energy density $ρ_Λ = Λc^2/(8πG)$, where $Λ$ is the cosmological constant, in addition to the particle-mass source term $ρ_m = m|ψ|^2$. The resulting Schrödinger-Newton-$Λ$ (S-N-$Λ$) system cannot be solved exactly, in closed form, and one must resort to either numerical …
The Schrödinger-Newton equation has gained attention in the recent past as a nonlinear modification of the Schrödinger equation due to a gravitational self-interaction. Such a modification is expected from a fundamentally semi-classical theory of gravity, and can therefore be considered a test case for the necessity of the quantisation of the gravitational field. Here we provide a thorough study of the effects of the Schrödinger-Newton equation for a micron-sized sphere trapped in a harmonic oscillator potential. We discuss both the effect on the energy eigenstates and the dynamical behaviour …
We modify the time dependent Schrödinger-Newton equation by using a potential for a solid sphere suggested by Jääskeläinen (Jääskeläinen 2012 Phys. Rev. A 86 052105) as well as a hollow-sphere potential. Compared to our recent paper (Giulini and Großardt 2011 Class. Quantum Grav. 28 195026) where a single point-particle, i.e. a Coulomb potential, was considered this has been suggested to be a more realistic model for a molecule. Surprisingly, compared to our previous results, inhibitions of dispersion of a Gaussian wave packet occur at even smaller masses for the solid-sphere potential, given …
We re-consider the time dependent Schrödinger-Newton equation as a model for the self-gravitational interaction of a quantum system. We numerically locate the onset of gravitationally induced inhibitions of dispersion of Gaussian wave packets and find them to occur at mass values more than 6 orders of magnitude higher than reported by Salzman and Carlip (2006, 2008), namely at about $10^{10}\,\mathrm{u}$. This fits much better to simple analytical estimates but unfortunately also questions the experimental realisability of the proposed laboratory test of quantum gravity in the foreseeable futu…
We examine the origin of the Newton-Schrödinger equations (NSEs) that play an important role in alternative quantum theories (AQT), macroscopic quantum mechanics and gravity-induced decoherence. We show that NSEs for individual particles do not follow from general relativity (GR) plus quantum field theory (QFT). Contrary to what is commonly assumed, the NSEs are not the weak-field (WF), non-relativistic (NR) limit of the semi-classical Einstein equation (SCE) (this nomenclature is preferred over the `M\/oller-Rosenfeld equation') based on GR+QFT. The wave-function in the NSEs makes sense only …
In this paper we extend the WKB-like `non-relativistic' expansion of the minimally coupled Klein--Gordon equation after Kiefer and Singh [1], Lämmerzahl [2] and Giulini and Großardt [3] to arbitrary order in $c^{-1}$, leading to Schrödinger equations describing a quantum particle in a general gravitational field, and compare the results with canonical quantisation of a free particle in curved spacetime, following Wajima et al. [4]. Furthermore, using a more operator-algebraic approach, the Klein--Gordon equation and the canonical quantisation method are shown to lead to the same results for so…
It has been suggested that the nonlinear Schrödinger-Newton equation might approximate the coupling of quantum mechanics with gravitation, particularly in the context of the Møller-Rosenfeld semiclassical theory. Numerical results for the spherically symmetric, time-dependent, single-particle case are presented, clarifying and extending previous work on the subject. It is found that, for a particle mass greater than $\sim 1.14(\hbar^2/(Gσ))^{1/3}$, a wave packet of width $σ$ partially "collapses" to a groundstate solution found by Moroz, Penrose, and Tod, with excess probability dispersing awa…
The Schrödinger-Newton model describes self-gravitating quantum particles, and it is often cited to explain the gravitational collapse of the wave function and the localization of macroscopic objects. However, this model is completely nonrelativistic. Thus, in order to study whether the relativistic effects may spoil the properties of this system, we derive a modification of the Schrödinger-Newton equation by considering certain relativistic corrections up to the first post-Newtonian order. The construction of the model begins by considering the Hamiltonian of a relativistic particle propagati…
We discuss aspects of gravitational modifications of Schrodinger dynamics proposed by Diosi and Penrose. We consider first the Diosi-Penrose criterion for gravitationally induced state vector reduction, and compute the reduction time expected for a superposition of a uniform density cubical solid in two positions displaced by a small fraction of the cube side. We show that the predicted effect is much smaller than would be observable in the proposed Marshall et al. mirror experiment. We then consider the ``Schrodinger -Newton'' equation for an N-particle system. We show that in the independent…
We study the correction of the energy spectrum of a gravitational quantum well due to the combined effect of the braneworld model with infinite extra dimensions and generalized uncertainty principle. The correction terms arise from a natural deformation of a semiclassical theory of quantum gravity governed by the Schrödinger-Newton equation based on a minimal length framework. The two fold correction in the energy yields new values of the spectrum, which are closer to the values obtained in the GRANIT experiment. This raises the possibility that the combined theory of the semiclassical quantum…
The asymptotics of the ground state $u(r)$ of the Schrödinger--Newton equation in $\mathbb{R}^3$ was determined by V. Moroz and J. van Schaftingen to be $u(r) \sim A e^{-r}/ r^{1 - \|u\|_2^2/8π}$ for some $A>0$, in units that fix the exponential rate to unity. They left open the value of $\|u\|_2^2$, the squared $L^2$ norm of $u$. Here it is rigorously shown that $2^{1/3}3π^2\leq \|u\|_2^2\leq 2^{3}π^{3/2}$. It is reported that numerically $\|u\|_2^2\approx 14.03π$, revealing that the monomial prefactor of $e^{-r}$ increases with $r$ in a concave manner. Asymptotic results are proposed for the…
No experimental evidence exists, to date, whether or not the gravitational field must be quantised. Theoretical arguments in favour of quantisation are inconclusive. The most straightforward alternative to quantum gravity, a coupling between classical gravity and quantum matter according to the semi-classical Einstein equations, yields a nonlinear modification of the Schrödinger equation. Here, effects of this so-called Schrödinger-Newton equation are discussed, which allow for technologically feasible experimental tests.
Nonlocal quantum fluids emerge as dark-matter models and tools for quantum simulations and technologies. However, strongly nonlinear regimes, like those involving multi-dimensional self-localized solitary waves, are marginally explored for what concerns quantum features. We study the dynamics of 3D+1 solitons in the second-quantized nonlocal nonlinear Schroedinger-Newton equation. We theoretically investigate the quantum diffusion of the soliton center of mass and other parameters, varying the interaction length. 3D+1 simulations of the Ito partial differential equations arising from the posit…
For Dirac equation, operator-invariants containing explicit time-dependence in parallel to known time-dependent invariants of nonrelativistic Schrödinger equation are introduced and discussed. As an example, a free Dirac particle is considered and new invariants are constructed for it. The integral of motion, which is initial Newton-Wigner position operator, is obtained explicitly for a free Dirac particle. For such particle with kick modeled by delta-function of time, the time-depending integral, which has physical meaning of initial momentum, is found.
Algebra of quantum mechanics via classical phonons. I: The Schrodinger equation as the Newtonian equation of motion and quantum observables as classical averages
In the one-dimensional stationary case, we construct a mechanical Lagrangian describing the quantum motion of a non-relativistic spinless system. This Lagrangian is written as a difference between a function $T$, which represents the quantum generalization of the kinetic energy and which depends on the coordinate $x$ and the temporal derivatives of $x$ up the third order, and the classical potential $V(x)$. The Hamiltonian is then constructed and the corresponding canonical equations are deduced. The function $T$ is first assumed arbitrary. The development of $T$ in a power series together wit…
We consider the model of the self-gravity driven spontaneous wavefunction reduction proposed by L. Diosi, R. Penrose et al. and based on a self-consistent system of the Schrodinger and Poisson equations. An analogous system of coupled Dirac and Maxwell-like equations is proposed as a relativization. Regular solutions to the latter form a discrete spectrum in which all the "active" gravitational masses are always positive, and approximately equal to inertial masses and to the mass $m$ of the quanta of Dirac field up to the corrections of order $α^2$. Here $α=(m/M_{pl})^2$ is the gravitational a…
Both the additional non-linear term in the Schrödinger equation and the additional non-Hamiltonian term in the von Neumann equation, proposed to ensure localisation and decoherence of macro-objects, resp., contain the same Newtonian interaction potential formally. We discuss certain aspects that are common for both equations. In particular, we calculate the enhancement of the proposed localisation and/or decoherence effects, which would take place if one could lower the conventional length-cutoff and resolve the mass density on the interatomic scale.
In this paper, the classical Schrödinger equation, which allows the study of classical dynamics in terms of wave functions, is analyzed theoretically and numerically. First, departing from classical (Newtonian) mechanics, and assuming an additional single-valued condition for the Hamilton's principal function, the classical Schrödinger equation is obtained. This additional assumption implies inherent non-classical features on the description of the dynamics obtained from the classical Schrödinger equation: the trajectories do not cross in the configuration space. Second, departing from Bohmian…
Newtonian and Schrodinger dynamics can be formulated in a physically meaningful way within the same Hilbert space framework. This fact was recently used to discover an unexpected relation between classical and quantum motions that goes beyond the results provided by the Ehrenfest theorem. The Newtonian dynamics was shown to be the Schrodinger dynamics of states constrained to a submanifold of the space of states, identified with the classical phase space of the system. Quantum observables are identified with vector fields on the space of states. The commutators of observables are expressed thr…

This paper addresses issues surrounding the concept of fractional quantum mechanics, related to lights propagation in inhomogeneous nonlinear media, specifically restricted to a so called gravitational optics. Besides Schrödinger Newton equation, we have also concerned with linear and nonlinear Airy beam accelerations in flat and curved spaces and fractal photonics, related to nonlinear Schrödinger equation, where impact of the fractional Laplacian is discussed. Another important feature of the gravitational optics' implementation is its geometry with the paraxial approximation, when quantum m…
We derive the Schrödinger-Newton equation as the non-relativistic limit of the Einstein-Dirac equations. Our analysis relaxes the assumption of spherical symmetry, made in earlier work in the literature, while deriving this limit. Since the spin of the Dirac field couples naturally to torsion, we generalize our analysis to the Einstein Cartan-Dirac (ECD) equations, again recovering the Schrödinger-Newton equation.
Within Newton-Schrödinger quantum mechanics which allows gravitational self-interaction, it is shown that a no-split no-collapse measurement scenario is possible. A macroscopic pointer moves at low acceleration, controlled by the Ehrenfest-averaged force acting on it. That makes classicality self-sustaining, resolves Everett's paradox, and outlines a way to spontaneous emergence of quantum randomness. Numerical estimates indicate that enhanced short-range gravitational forces are needed for the scenario to work. The scheme fails to explain quantum nonlocality, including two-detector anticorrel…
In this reply, we hope to bring clarifications about the reservations expressed by Floyd in his comments, give further explanations about the choice of the approach and show that our fundamental result can be reproduced by other ways. We also establish that Floyd's trajectories manifest some ambiguities related to the mathematical choice of the couple of solutions of Schrödinger's equation.
The Schrodinger-Newton equation has frequently been studied as a nonlinear modification of the Schrodinger equation incorporating gravitational self-interaction. However, there is no evidence yet as to whether nature actually behaves this way. This work investigates a possible way to experimentally test gravitational self-interaction. The effect of self-gravity on interference of massive particles is studied by numerically solving the Schrodinger-Newton equation for a particle passing through a double-slit. The results show that the presence of gravitational self-interaction has an effect on t…
