We report experimental and theoretical investigations of the Hall effect in YbRh2Si2 and its reference compounds LuRh2Si2 and YbIr2Si2. Based on band-structure calculations we identify two bands dominating the Hall coefficient in all these compounds. For the case of LuRh2Si2 - the non-magnetic reference compound of YbRh2Si2 - the temperature dependence of the Hall coefficient is described quantitatively to arise from two hole-like bands. For YbIr2Si2 and YbRh2Si2, renormalized band calculations yield two bands of opposite character. In YbRh2Si2 these two bands almost compensate each other. We present strong indications that the sample dependences of the low-temperature Hall coefficient observed for YbRh2Si2 arise from slight variations of the relative scattering rates of the two bands. Minute changes of the composition appear to be the origin.
We probe the relationship between magnetism and "non-metallic" transport in the magnetically frustrated metal FeCrAs using the low-field Hall effect. We find that the low-field Hall coefficient is dependent on crystal orientation, and exhibits two temperature-induced sign reversals when the current is within the $ab$-plane. We suggest that these observations are due to scattering from magnetic fluctuations that become momentum-dependent near the onset of long-range magnetic order. It seems, however, that this additional spin-fluctuation scattering rides on top of the non-metallic resistivity, …
The incidence of topology on the band structure and physical properties of layered compounds has been extensively studied in semimetals. How those evolve in presence of electronic correlations has been less investigated so far. In the sodium cobaltates NaxCoO2 considered here, unexpected magnetic properties associated with correlations on the Co sites have been disclosed about 15 years ago. The distinct Na orders of the stable phases of these cobaltates have been shown to induce specific Co charge disproportionation with large size unit cells in the CoO2 planes, linked with the diverse magneti…
Recent angular-resolved photoemission experiments on LaNiO$_3$ reported a renormalization of the Fermi velocity of $e_g$ quasiparticles, a kink in their dispersion at $ -0.2$ eV and a large broadening and weakened dispersion of the occupied $t_{2g}$ states. We show here that all these features result from electronic correlations and are quantitatively reproduced by calculations combining density-functional theory and dynamical mean-field theory. The importance and general relevance of correlation effects in filled bands coupled by inter-orbital interactions to a partially-filled band are point…
This work reports a study of the nonlinear Hall Effect (HE) in the semimetallic ferromagnet EuB6. A distinct switch in its Hall resistivity slope is observed in the paramagnetic phase, which occurs at a single critical magnetization over a wide temperature range. The observation is interpreted as the point of percolation for entities of a more conducting and magnetically ordered phase in a less ordered background. With an increasing applied magnetic field, the conducting regions either increase in number or expand beyond the percolation limit, hence increasing the global conductivity and effec…
Two-dimensional interacting electron systems become strongly correlated if the electrons are subject to a perpendicular high magnetic field. After introducing the physics of the quantum Hall regime the incompressible many- particle ground state and its excitations are studied in detail at fractional filling factors for spin-polarized electrons. The spin degree of freedom whose importance was shown in recent experiments is considered by studying the thermodynamics at filling factor one and near one.
The Kane-Mele (KM) model is proposed to describe the quantum spin Hall effect of electrons on the two-dimensional honeycomb lattice. Here, we will show that, in a certain parameter region, the London equation is obtained from the effective field theory of the layered KM model with an electronic correlation.
We investigate an experimental toy-model system of a pseudospin-half square-lattice Hubbard Hamiltonian in [(SrIrO3)1/(CaTiO3)1] to include both nontrivial complex hopping and moderate electronic correlation. While the former induces electronic Berry phases as anticipated from the weak-coupling limit, the later stabilizes an antiferromagnetic (AFM) Mott insulator ground state in analogous to the strong-coupling limit. Their combined results in the real system are found to be an anomalous Hall effect with a non-monotonic temperature dependence due to the self-competition of the electron-hole pa…
Systematic transport measurements have been performed on a series of La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO) thin films with varying degrees of anisotropic strain. The strain is induced via epitaxial growth on NdGaO3(001) substrates and varied by controlling the thermal annealing time. An antiferromagnetic insulating (AFI) state, possibly associated with charge ordering, emerges upon thermal annealing. The Hall effect in these materials exhibits features that are indicative of a percolative phase transition and correlate closely with the emergence of the AFI state. In the paramagnetic phase, the Hall resistiv…
We consider the effect of Coulomb interactions in the propagation of electrons, prepared in arbitrary spin states, on chiral edge channels in the integer quantum Hall regime. Electrons are injected and detected at the same energy at different locations of the Hall bar, which is modeled as a chiral Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid. The current is computed perturbatively in the tunneling amplitudes, within a non-crossing approximation using exact solutions of the interacting Green's functions. In the case of different channel velocities, the spin precession effect is evaluated, and the role of interact…
Although the Hall coefficient R_H is an informative transport property of metals and semiconductors, its meaning in the cuprate superconductors has been ambiguous because of its unusual characteristics. Here we show that a systematic study of R_H in La_{2-x}Sr_{x}CuO_{4} single crystals over a wide doping range establishes a qualitative understanding of its peculiar evolution, which turns out to reflect a two-component nature of the electronic structure caused by an unusual development of the Fermi surface recently uncovered by photoemission experiments.
We exploit the analogy with the quantum Hall (QH) effect for electrons to study the possible atomic QH states of a rapidly-rotating Bose-Einstein condensate. Actually, there is a nearly perfect map of the present problem in the QH regime to the QH physics for electrons. The profound map enables one to give a physically appealing definitions of the filling fraction and the "atomic Hall conductance" that is quantized for atomic Laughlin states. This quantization might imply an exotic fractionalization of atomic mass. We also briefly discuss an effective Chern-Simons theory for describing the ato…
The heavy fermion systems present a unique platform in which strong electronic correlations give rise to a host of novel, and often competing, electronic and magnetic ground states. Amongst a number of potential experimental tools at our disposal, measurements of the Hall effect have emerged as a particularly important one in discerning the nature and evolution of the Fermi surfaces of these enigmatic metals. In this article, we present a comprehensive review of Hall effect measurements in the heavy-fermion materials, and examine the success it has had in contributing to our current understand…
We derive a Kubo-like formula for the thermal Hall conductance of a 2d lattice systems which is free from ambiguities associated with the definition of energy magnetization. We use it to define a relative topological invariant of gapped 2d lattice systems at zero temperature. Up to a numerical factor, it can be identified with the difference of chiral central charges for the corresponding edge modes. This establishes the bulk-boundary correspondence for the chiral central charge. We also show that for any Local Commuting Projector Hamiltonian the relative chiral central charge vanishes, while …
The electronic nematic phase occurs when the point-group symmetry of the lattice structure is broken, due to electron-electron interactions. We study a model for the nematic phase on a square lattice with emphasis on the phase transition between isotropic and nematic phases within mean field theory. We find the transition to be first order, with dramatic changes in the Fermi surface topology accompanying the transition. Furthermore, we study the conductivity tensor and Hall constant as probes of the nematic phase and its transition. The relevance of our findings to Hall resistivity experiments…
It was recently pointed out that Halperin's 113 topological order explains the transport experiments in the quantum Hall liquid at filling factor $ν=5/2$. The 113 order, however, cannot be easily distinguished from other likely topological orders at $ν=5/2$ such as the non-Abelian Pfaffian and anti-Pfaffian states and the Abelian Halperin 331 state in Fabry-Perot interferometry. We show that an electronic Mach-Zehnder interferometer provides a clear identification of these candidate $ν=5/2$ states. Specifically, the $I$-$V$ curve for the tunneling current through the interferometer is more asy…
The antiferromagnetic ground state and the metamagnetic transition to the ferromagnetic state of CsCl-ordered FeRh epilayers have been characterized using Hall and magnetoresistance measure- ments. On cooling into the ground state, the metamagnetic transition is found to coincide with a suppression in carrier density of at least an order of magnitude below the typical metallic level shown by the ferromagnetic state. The data reveal that this sub-metallic density of electron-like majority carriers in the antiferromagnetic phase are attributable to intrinsic doping from Fe/Rh substitution defect…
Measurements of DC magnetization, AC susceptibility and Hall effect of $Pr_{0.7}Sr_{0.3}MnO_3$ single crystal are reported. The various features are discussed in terms of competing electronic and spin ordering phase transitions, in particular concerning the $e_g$ and $t_{2g}$ competition and its effect on spin ordering.
Motived by time-reversal symmetry breaking and giant anomalous Hall effect in kagome superconductor \textit{A}V$_3$Sb$_5$ (\textit{A} = Cs, K, Rb), we carried out the thermal transport measurements on CsV$_3$Sb$_5$. In addition to the anomalous Hall effect, the anomalous Nernst effect and the anomalous thermal Hall effect emerge. Interestingly, the longitudinal thermal conductivity $κ_{xx}$ largely deviates from the electronic contribution obtained from the longitudinal conductivity $σ_{xx}$ by the Wiedemann-Franz law. In contrast, the thermal Hall conductivity $κ_{xy}$ is roughly consistent w…
The fractional quantum Hall effect is a very particular manifestation of electronic correlations in two-dimensional systems in a strong perpendicular magnetic field. It arises as a consequence of a strong Coulomb repulsion between electrons in the same Landau level that conspires with a particular chirality of the electronic states. This chirality is inherited from the classical cyclotron motion, i.e. a particular sense of electronic rotation due to the orientation of the magnetic field. The specificity of the FQHE in graphene consists of a four-fold spin-valley degeneracy inherited from the e…
We treat elementary excitations, the spin-liquid state, and the anomalous Hall effect (including the quantum one in purely 2D situation) in layered highly correlated systems. The mechanisms of the formation of a topological state associated with bare flat energy bands, correlations, and spin-orbit interactions, including the appearance of correlated Chern bands, are analyzed. A two-band picture of the spectrum in metallic kagome lattices is proposed, which involves a transition from the ferromagnetic state, a flat strongly correlated band, and a band of light Dirac electrons. In this case, the…
In this work we studied the properties of a two-dimensional electronic gas subjected to a strong magnetic field and cooled at a low temperature. We reported exact analytical results of energies at the ground state. The results are for systems up to $N_{e}=10$ electrons calculated in the integer quantum Hall effect (IQHE) regime at the filling factor $\upsilon=1$. To accomplish the calculation we used the complex polar coordinates method. Note that the system of electrons in the quantum Hall regime relied heavily on the disk geometry for finite systems of electrons with arbitrary values of $N_{…
Because electrons and ions form a coupled system, it is a priori clear that the dynamics of the lattice should reflect symmetry breaking within the electronic degrees of freedom. This has been recently clearly evidenced for the case of time-reversal and mirror symmetry breakings by observations of a large phononic thermal Hall effect in many strongly correlated electronic materials. The mechanism by which time-reversal breaking and chirality is communicated to the lattice is, however, far from evident. In this paper we discuss how this occurs via many-body scattering of phonons by collective m…

We theoretically investigate the mechanism to generate large intrinsic spin Hall effect in iridates or more broadly in 5d transition metal oxides with strong spin-orbit coupling. We demonstrate such a possibility by taking the example of orthorhombic perovskite iridate with nonsymmorphic lattice symmetry, SrIrO$_3$, which is a three-dimensional semimetal with nodal line spectrum. It is shown that large intrinsic spin Hall effect arises in this system via the spin-Berry curvature originating from the nearly degenerate electronic spectra surrounding the nodal line. This effect exists even when t…
The kagome lattice, consisting of interconnected triangles and hexagons uniquely, is an excellent model system for study frustrated magnetism, electronic correlation and topological electronic structure. After an intensive investigation on frustrated magnetism in insulating magnetic kagome lattices, the interplay between charge and spin degrees of freedom via spin-orbital coupling in metallic systems (kagome metals) has become an attractive topic recently. Here, we study centrosymmetric YMn6Sn6 with Mn kagome lattice. We discover that it exhibits giant topological Hall effect near room tempera…
The thermal Hall conductivity $κ_{xy}$ and Hall conductivity $σ_{xy}$ in CeCoIn$_5$ are used to determine the Lorenz number ${\cal L}_H$ at low temperature $T$. This enables the separation of the observed thermal conductivity into its electronic and non-electronic parts. We uncover evidence for a charge-neutral, field-dependent thermal conductivity, which we identify with spin excitations. At low $T$, these excitations dominate the scattering of charge carriers. We show that suppression of the spin excitations in high fields leads to a steep enhancement of the electron mean-free-path, which le…
We have investigated magnetotransport properties and the topological electronic structure of the half-Heusler compound TbPtBi. Our experiments reveal an exceptionally large anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in the canted antiferromagnetic state of TbPtBi with the anomalous Hall angle (AHA) reaching ~0.68-0.76, which is a few times larger than the previously reported record in GdPtBi. First-principles electronic structure and the associated anomalous Hall conductivity were computed in order to interpret the experimental results. Our analysis shows that the AHE in TbPtBi does not originate from the We…
By combining scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy and first-principles calculations, we systematically study the local electronic states of magnetic dopants V and Cr in the topological insulator (TI) Sb2Te3. Spectroscopic imaging shows diverse local defect states between Cr and V, which agree with our first-principle calculations. The unique spectroscopic features of V and Cr dopants provide electronic fingerprints for the co-doped magnetic TI samples with the enhanced quantum anomalous Hall effect. Our results also facilitate the exploration of the underlying mechanism of the enhanced q…
We review the theoretical basis and understanding of electronic interactions in graphene Landau levels, in the limit of strong correlations. This limit occurs when inter-Landau-level excitations may be omitted because they belong to a high-energy sector, whereas the low-energy excitations only involve the same level, such that the kinetic energy (of the Landau level) is an unimportant constant. Two prominent effects emerge in this limit of strong electronic correlations: generalised quantum Hall ferromagnetic states that profit from the approximate four-fold spin-valley degeneracy of graphene'…
Gapless electronic systems containing topologically nontrivial Fermi points are sources of various topological insulators. Whereas most of these special band-crossing points are built in the electronic structure of the non-interacting lattice models, we show that a quadratic Fermi point characterized by a non-zero winding number emerges with a collinear triple-Q spin-density-wave state that arises from a perfectly nested but topologically trivial Fermi surface. We obtain a universal low-energy Hamiltonian for the quadratic Fermi point and show that such collinear orderings are unstable against…
The interaction between electrons in graphene under high magnetic fields drives the formation of a rich set of quantum Hall ferromagnetic phases (QHFM), with broken spin or valley symmetry. Visualizing atomic scale electronic wavefunctions with scanning tunneling spectroscopy (STS), we resolve microscopic signatures of valley ordering in QHFM and fractional quantum Hall phases of graphene. At charge neutrality, we observe a field-tuned continuous quantum phase transition from a valley polarized state to an intervalley coherent state, with a Kekule distortion of its electronic density. Mapping …
Low-energy electronic states in monolayer and bilayer graphenes present chiral charge carriers with unique and unusual properties of interest for electronic applications. Here, we report the magnetotransport measurements in the ABC-stacked trilayer graphene as a function of charge carrier density, magnetic field, and temperature, which show clear evidence of l = 3 chiral quasiparticles with cubic dispersion, existing in a large, 20x60 sq. microns device. Shubnikov-deHaas oscillations (SdHO) reveal the Berry's phase 3π, and the marked increase of cyclotron mass near charge neutrality, consisten…
We have performed the first high-pressure magnetotransport and x-ray diffraction measurements on ferromagnetic LaCo5, confirming the theoretically predicted electronic topological transition driving the magneto-elastic collapse seen in the related compound YCo5. Our x-ray diffraction results show an anisotropic lattice collapse of the c-axis near 10 GPa that is also commensurate with a change in the majority charge carriers evident from high-pressure Hall effect measurements. The coupling of the electronic, magnetic and lattice degrees of freedom is further substantiated by the evolution of th…
Hydrodynamic and viscous effects in electronic liquids are at the focus of much current research. Most intriguing is perhaps the non-dissipative Hall viscosity, which, due to its symmetry-protected topological nature, can help identify complex topological orders. In this work we study the effects of viscosity in general, and Hall viscosity in particular, on the dispersion relation of edge magnetoplasmons in 2D electronic systems. Using an extension of the standard Wiener-Hopf technique we derive a general solution to the problem, accounting for the long-range Coulomb potential. Among other fea…
The origin of anomalous Hall effect (AHE) in magnetic materials is one of the most intriguing aspect in condensed matter physics and has been controversial for a long time. Recent studies indicate that the intrinsic AHE is closely related to the Berry curvature of occupied electronic states. In a magnetic Weyl semimetal with broken time-reversal symmetry, there are significant contributions on Berry curvature around Weyl nodes, which would lead to a large intrinsic AHE. Here, we report the large intrinsic AHE in the half-metallic ferromagnet Co3Sn2S2 single crystal. By systematically mapping o…
We study the nature of the ν=5/2 quantum Hall state in wide quantum wells under the mixing of electronic subbands and Landau levels. We introduce a general method to analyze the Moore-Read Pfaffian state and its particle-hole conjugate, the anti-Pfaffian, under periodic boundary conditions in a "quartered" Brillouin zone scheme containing both even and odd numbers of electrons. We examine the rotational quantum numbers on the torus, and show spontaneous breaking of the particle-hole symmetry can be observed in finite-size systems. In the presence of electronic-subband and Landau-level mixing t…
We investigate the effects of a transverse magnetic field on the transport properties of carbon nanotubes, making use of a long-wavelength description in terms of Dirac fermion fields. For values of the magnetic length smaller than the nanotube radius, we observe that the electronic states organize into incipient Landau subbands, with a highly degenerate level at zero energy. We show that only the states in dispersive branches, localized at the flanks of the nanotube, are able to transport current in the longitudinal direction. This is at the origin of the quantization of the Hall conductivity…
The recently introduced classification of two-dimensional insulators in terms of topological crystalline invariants has been applied so far to "obstructed" atomic insulators characterized by a mismatch between the centers of the electronic Wannier functions and the ionic positions. We extend this notion to quantum spin Hall insulators in which the ground state cannot be described in terms of time-reversal symmetric localized Wannier functions. A system equivalent to graphene in all its relevant electronic and topological properties except for a real-space obstruction is identified and studied …
Kane and Mele predicted that in presence of spin-orbit interaction graphene realizes the quantum spin Hall state. However, exceptionally weak intrinsic spin-orbit splitting in graphene ($\approx 10^{-5}$ eV) inhibits experimental observation of this topological insulating phase. To circumvent this problem, we propose a novel approach towards controlling spin-orbit interactions in graphene by means of covalent functionalization of graphene edges with functional groups containing heavy elements. Proof-of-concept first-principles calculations show that very strong spin-orbit coupling can be induc…
