The incidence of topology on the band structure and physical properties of layered compounds has been extensively studied in semimetals. How those evolve in presence of electronic correlations has been less investigated so far. In the sodium cobaltates NaxCoO2 considered here, unexpected magnetic properties associated with correlations on the Co sites have been disclosed about 15 years ago. The distinct Na orders of the stable phases of these cobaltates have been shown to induce specific Co charge disproportionation with large size unit cells in the CoO2 planes, linked with the diverse magnetic behaviors. This provides an original playground in the studies of interplays between topology and correlations in these layered materials. We present here transport measurements on a series of single crystals and demonstrate that we do synthetize pure phases with quite reproducible transport properties. We show that above room T those display a similar behavior whatever the Na content. On the contrary we provide evidence for a great diversity in Hall effect low temperature dependences which underlines the specificities of the Fermi Surface reconstructions induced by the Na order. We study in some detail the difference between two metallic phases, one (x = 0.77) antiferromagnetic below TN = 22 K and the second (x = 2/3) paramagnetic down to T = 0. Both show a sign change in the Hall effect with decreasing T. We demonstrate that this can be attributed to quite distinct physical effects. For the x = 0.77 phase the negative Hall effect occurs in similar conditions to the anomalous Hall effect found in various magnetic metals. In the x = 2/3 phase have to be assigned to specificities of its Fermi surface. In both cases the anomalies detected in the Hall effect are certainly associated with the topology of their Co electronic bands.
Temperature- and field-dependent measurements of the Hall effect of pure and 4 % Rh-doped URu$_{2}$Si$_{2}$ reveal low density (0.03 hole/U) high mobility carriers to be unique to the `hidden order' phase and consistent with an itinerant density-wave order parameter. The Fermi surface undergoes a series of abrupt changes as the magnetic field is increased. When combined with existing de Haas-van Alphen data, the Hall data expose a strong interplay between the stability of the `hidden order,' the degree of polarization of the Fermi liquid and the Fermi surface topology.
Here we conjecture on a topological model based on the Möbius strip derived from the current distribution at the plateaus of the Quantum Hall Effect (QHE). It can account for the fractional values of the QHE in an easy way.
Collective charge-density wave (CDW) transport was measured under a high magnetic field in NbSe$_3$ microbridges which have been cut transversely and at an angle to the chains' direction. We give evidences that the CDW sliding is driven by the Hall voltage generated by the inter-chain current of normal carriers. We have discovered a re-entrance effect of the Hall-driven sliding above a crossover temperature at which the Hall constant has been known to change sign. For the narrow channel, cut at 45$^\circ$ relative to the chain axis, we observed an evolution from the Hall-driven sliding at low …
Study of symmetry, topology and geometric phase can reveal many new and interesting results on the topological states of matter. Here we present a completely new and interesting result of symmetry, topology and quantization of geometric phase along with the physical explanation for two different symmetry classes. We present a detailed study of the auxiliary space for two different symmetry classes of Hamiltonians. We show explicitly that the origin of the auxiliary space inside the curve is only a necessary condition but it is not a sufficient condition for the topological state. One of the mo…
A formula for the Hall response of interacting multi-band systems with arbitrary band topology and spin-orbit coupling is derived. The formula is valid at finite frequency, which is relevant for Faraday rotation, and it takes into account all particle-hole vertex corrections. The formula includes both three-leg (triangular) and four-leg (rectangular) diagrams. The latter diagrams are absent in the single band case. We show that the rectangular diagrams are necessary to recover the semiclassical formula for the Hall effect from the Kubo formula in the DC limit. They also give the linear respons…
The hallmark of a skyrmion crystal (SkX) is the topological Hall effect (THE). In this Article, we predict and explain an unconventional behavior of the topological Hall conductivity in SkXs. In simple terms, the spin texture of the skyrmions causes an inhomogeneous emergent magnetic field whose associated Lorentz force acts on the electrons. By making the emergent field homogeneous, the THE is mapped onto the quantum Hall effect (QHE). Consequently, each electronic band of the SkX is assigned to a Landau level. This correspondence of THE and QHE allows to explain the unconventional behavior o…
We consider a class of {\em quantum Hall topological insulators}: topologically nontrivial states with zero Chern number at finite magnetic field, in which the counter-propagating edge states are protected by a symmetry (spatial or spin) other than time-reversal. HgTe-type heterostructures and graphene are among the relevant systems. We study the effect of electron interactions on the topological properties of the system. We particularly focus on the vicinity of the topological phase transition, marked by the crossing of two Landau levels, where the system is a strongly interacting quantum Hal…
We study by a consistent mean-field scheme the role on the single- and two-particle properties of a local electron-electron repulsion in the Bernevig, Hughes and Zhang model of a quantum spin Hall insulator. We find that the interaction fosters the intrusion between the topological and non-topological insulators of a new insulating and magnetoelectric phase that breaks spontaneously inversion and time reversal symmetries, but not their product. The approach to this phase from both topological and non-topological sides is signalled by the softening of two exciton branches, i.e., whose binding e…
We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the spinful extended Haldane-Hubbard model on the honeycomb lattice using an exact-diagonalization, mean-field variational approach, and further complement it with the infinite density matrix renormalization group, applied to an infinite honeycomb cylinder. This model, governed by both on-site and nearest-neighbor interactions, can result in two types of insulators with finite local order parameters, either with spin or charge ordering. Moreover, a third one, a topologically nontrivial insulator with nonlocal order, is also manifest. We test exp…
Electronic topology in metallic kagome compounds is under intense scrutiny. We present transport experiments in Na2/3CoO2 in which the Na order differentiates a Co kagome sub-lattice in the triangular CoO2 layers. Hall and magnetoresistance (MR) data under high fields give evidence for the coexistence of light and heavy carriers. At low temperatures, the dominant light carrier conductivity at zero field is suppressed by a B-linear MR suggesting Dirac like quasiparticles. Lifshitz transitions induced at large B and T unveil the lower mobility carriers. They display a negative B^2 MR due to scat…
We consider domain walls in nematic quantum Hall ferromagnets predicted to form in multivalley semiconductors, recently probed by scanning tunnelling microscopy experiments on Bi(111) surfaces. We show that the domain wall properties depend sensitively on the filling factor $ν$ of the underlying (integer) quantum Hall states. For $ν=1$ and in the absence of impurity scattering we argue that the wall hosts a single-channel Luttinger liquid whose gaplessness is a consequence of valley and charge conservation. For $ν=2$, it supports a two-channel Luttinger liquid, which for sufficiently strong in…
Our measurements of the Hall coefficient in rare-earth tritelluride compounds reveal a strong hysteresis between cooling and warming in the low temperature range where a second unidirectional charge density wave (CDW) occurs. We show that this effect results from the interplay between two instabilities: band crossing of the Te $p_{x}$ and $p_{y}$ orbitals at the Fermi level and CDW, which have a close energy gain and compete. Calculation of the electron susceptibility at the CDW wave vector with and without band anticrossing reconstruction of the electron spectrum yields a satisfactory estimat…
The magnon dispersion of ferromagnetic SrRuO$_3$ was studied by inelastic neutron scattering experiments on single crystals as function of temperature. Even at low temperature the magnon modes exhibit substantial broadening pointing to strong interaction with charge carriers. We find an anomalous temperature dependence of both the magnon gap and the magnon stiffness, which soften upon cooling in the ferromagnetic phase. Both effects trace the temperature dependence of the anomalous Hall effect. We argue that these results show that Weyl points and the anomalous Hall effect can directly influen…
We study quantization conditions of the Hall conductivity for a two dimensional system described by a double exchange Hamiltonian with and without an external magnetic field. This is obtained by an extension of the topological arguments familiar from the theory of the integer quantum Hall effect. The quantization conditions are related to spontaneous breaking of spin O(3), time-reversal, and spin chiral symmetries. Extension to systems with higher dimensions is briefly discussed.
We uncover topological features of neutral particle-hole pair excitations of correlated quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) insulators whose approximately flat conduction and valence bands have equal and opposite non-zero Chern number. Using an exactly solvable model we show that the underlying band topology affects both the center-of-mass and relative motion of particle-hole bound states. This leads to the formation of topological exciton bands whose features are robust to nonuniformity of both the dispersion and the Berry curvature. We apply these ideas to recently-reported broken-symmetry spontane…
We develop a first quantization description of fractional Chern insulators that is the dual of the conventional fractional quantum Hall (FQH) problem, with the roles of position and momentum interchanged. In this picture, FQH states are described by anisotropic FQH liquids forming in momentum-space Landau levels in a fluctuating magnetic field. The fundamental quantum geometry of the problem emerges from the interplay of single-body and interaction metrics, both of which act as momentum-space duals of the geometrical picture of the anisotropic FQH effect. We then present a novel broad class of…
We investigate the ground-state phase diagram of the spinless Haldane-Hubbard model in the presence of quenched disorder, contrasting results obtained from both exact diagonalization as well as density matrix renormalization group, applied to a honeycomb cylinder. The interplay of disorder, interactions and topology gives rise to a rich phase diagram, and in particular highlights the possibility of a disorder-driven trivial-to-topological transition in the presence of finite interactions. That is, the topological Anderson insulator, demonstrated in non-interacting settings, is shown to be stab…
Exploration of exotic transport behavior for quantum materials is of great interest and importance for revealing exotic orders to bring new physics. In this Letter, we report the observation of exotic prominent planar Hall effect (PHE) and planar anisotropic magnetoresistivity (PAMR) in strange kagome metal KV$_3$Sb$_5$. The PHE and PAMR, which are driven by an in-plane magnetic field and display sharp difference from other Hall effects driven by an out-of-plane magnetic field or magnetization, exhibit exotic higher-order oscillations in sharp contrast to those following empirical rule only al…
We show experimental and theoretical evidence that BiTeI hosts a novel disordered metallic state named diffusive helical Fermi liquid (DHFL), characterized by a pair of concentric spin-chiral Fermi surfaces with negligible inter-valley scattering. Key experimental observations are extreme disparity of the mobility between inner and outer helical Fermi surfaces near the Weyl point and existence of the so called universal scaling behavior for the Hall resistivity. Although the extreme enhancement of the inner-Fermi-surface mobility near the Weyl point is quantitatively explained within the self-…
The nature of the state at low Landau-level filling factors has been a longstanding puzzle in the field of the fractional quantum Hall effect. While theoretical calculations suggest that a crystal is favored at filling factors $ν\lesssim 1/6$, experiments show, at somewhat elevated temperatures, minima in the longitudinal resistance that are associated with fractional quantum Hall effect at $ν=$ 1/7, 2/11, 2/13, 3/17, 3/19, 1/9, 2/15 and 2/17, which belong to the standard sequences $ν=n/(6n\pm 1)$ and $ν=n/(8n\pm 1)$. To address this paradox, we investigate the nature of some of the low-$ν$ st…
We investigate two-dimensional frustrated Heisenberg magnets using non-perturbative renormalization group techniques. These magnets allow for point-like topological defects which are believed to unbind and drive either a crossover or a phase transition which separates a low temperature, spin-wave dominated regime from a high temperature regime where defects are abundant. Our approach can account for the crossover qualitatively and both the temperature dependence of the correlation length as well as a broad but well defined peak in the specific heat are reproduced. We find no signatures of a fi…
Two-dimensional lattice models subjected to an external effective magnetic field can form nontrivial band topologies characterized by nonzero integer band Chern numbers. In this Letter, we investigate such a lattice model originating from the Hofstadter model and demonstrate that the band topology transitions can be realized by simply introducing tunable longer-range hopping. The rich phase diagram of band Chern numbers is obtained for the simple rational flux density and a classification of phases is presented. In the presence of interactions, the existence of fractional quantum Hall states i…
Magnetotransport measurements on the centrosymetric square-net Eu(Ga$_{1-x}$Al$_x$)$_4$ compounds reveal evidence for both reciprocal- and real-space topology. For compositions $0.50 \leq x \leq 0.90$, several intermediate field phases are found by magnetization measurements when $H \parallel c$, where a maximum in the topological Hall effect (THE) is observed, pointing to the existence of topological (real-space topology) or non-coplanar spin textures. For $0.25 \leq x \leq 0.39$, magnetization measurements reveal an intermediate field state, but no transition is visible in the Hall measureme…
We elucidate the general rule governing the response of dislocation lines in three-dimensional topological band insulators. According to this ${\bf K}\text{-}{\bf b}\text{-}{\bf t}$ rule, the lattice topology, represented by dislocation lines oriented in direction ${\bf t}$ with Burgers vector ${\bf b}$, combines with the electronic-band topology, characterized by the band-inversion momentum ${\bf K}_{\rm inv}$, to produce gapless propagating modes when the plane orthogonal to the dislocation line features a band inversion with a nontrivial ensuing flux $Φ={\bf K}_{\rm inv}\cdot {\bf b}\,\, ({…
It is observed experimentally that the sign of the Hall resistance can be flipped by a dc electric current in the twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) at 3/4 filling of the four-fold degenerate conduction flat bands. The experiment implies a switching of the valley polarization (VP) and topology in TBG. Here we present a theory on the current-induced switching of VP and topology. The presence of current in the bulk causes {the} redistribution of {electron occupation} in bands near the Fermi energy, which then deforms and shifts the band dispersion due to the Coulomb interaction. Above a critical cur…
We investigate the role of disorder in a two-dimensional semi-Dirac material characterized by a linear dispersion in one, and a parabolic dispersion in the orthogonal, direction. Using the self-consistent Born approximation, we show that disorder can drive a topological Lifshitz transition from an insulator to a semi-metal, as it generates a momentum independent off-diagonal contribution to the self-energy. Breaking time-reversal symmetry enriches the topological phase diagram with three distinct regimes-- single-node trivial, two-node trivial and two-node Chern. We find that disorder can driv…
Usually the quantum spin Hall states are expected to possess gapless, helical edge modes. Are there clean, non-interacting, quantum spin Hall states without gapless, edge modes? We show the generic, $n$-fold-symmetric, momentum planes of three-dimensional, stable Dirac semi-metals, which are orthogonal to the direction of nodal separation are examples of such generalized quantum spin Hall systems. We demonstrate that the planes lying between two Dirac points and the celebrated Bernevig-Zhang-Hughes model support identical quantized, non-Abelian Berry flux of magnitude $2 π$. Consequently, both…
Electron correlation and topology are two central threads of modern condensed matter physics. Semiconductor moiré materials provide a highly tunable platform for studies of electron correlation. Correlation-driven phenomena, including the Mott insulator, generalized Wigner crystals, stripe phases and continuous Mott transition, have been demonstrated. However, nontrivial band topology has remained elusive. Here we report the observation of a quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect in AB-stacked MoTe2/WSe2 moiré heterobilayers. Unlike in the AA-stacked structures, an out-of-plane electric field con…
Fathoming interplay between symmetry and topology of many-electron wave-functions has deepened understanding of quantum many body systems, especially after the discovery of topological insulators. Topology of electron wave-functions enforces and protects emergent gapless excitations, and symmetry is intrinsically tied to the topological protection in a certain class. Namely, unless the symmetry is broken, the topological nature is intact. We show novel interplay phenomena between symmetry and topology in topological phase transitions associated with line-nodal superconductors. The interplay ma…
The Hall coefficient is related to the effective carrier density and Fermi surface topology in noninteracting and weakly interacting systems. In strongly correlated systems, the relation between the Hall coefficient and single-particle properties is less clear. Clarifying this relation would give insight into the nature of transport in strongly correlated materials that lack well-formed quasiparticles. In this work, we investigate the DC Hall coefficient of the Hubbard model using determinant quantum Monte Carlo in conjunction with a recently developed expansion of magneto-transport coefficien…
We study for the first time the effects of strong short-range electron-electron interactions in generic Rarita--Schwinger--Weyl semimetals hosting spin-3/2 electrons with linear dispersion at a four-fold band crossing point. The emergence of this novel quasiparticle, which is absent in high-energy physics, has recently been confirmed experimentally in the solid state. We combine symmetry considerations and a perturbative renormalization group analysis to discern three interacting phases that are prone to emerge in the strongly correlated regime: The chiral topological semimetal breaks a $\math…
The study of topology of energy bands in solid has always been interesting and fruitful. Historically, Thouless et al proposed the TKNN number or Chern number of the energy bands to explain the quantization of Hall conductance in the integer quantum Hall effect. Recently, Z2 topological insulators have been intensively studied and similarly topological crystalline insulators are proposed. These materials exhibit nontrivial charge or spin transport properties that is due to the existence of metallic edge states. The edge states are protect by the topology of the energy bands of the bulk material…
Ideal Chern insulating phases arise in two-dimensional systems with broken time-reversal symmetry. They are characterized by having nearly-flat bands, and a uniform quantum geometry -- which combines the Berry curvature and quantum metric -- and by being incompressible. In this work, we analyze the role of the quantum geometry in ideal Chern insulators aiming to describe transport in presence of external out-of-plane magnetic and electric fields. We firstly show that in the absence of external perturbations, novel Berry connections appear in ideal Chern insulating phases. Secondly, we provide …
It is widely believed that integer quantum Hall systems do not have fractional excitations. Here we show the converse to be true for a class of systems where integer quantum Hall effect emerges spontaneously due to the interplay of itinerant electrons and noncoplanar magnetic ordering. We show that magnetic $Z_2$ vortices in such systems, whose topological stability is guaranteed by the structure of the order parameter, indeed carry fractional charge.
