Large nebulae (>50 kpc) emitting strongly in Lya (also known as Lya ``blobs'') are likely signposts of ongoing massive galaxy formation. The relative rarity of these sources and their discovery in well-studied galaxy overdensities suggest that they may be associated with regions of high galaxy density. One of the largest Lya nebulae, discovered at a redshift of z~2.7 via its strong mid-infrared emission, provides an unbiased test of this association. We have carried out a deep intermediate-band imaging survey for Lya-emitting galaxies (LAEs) within a 30'x26' field of view around this Lya nebula. This is the first study of the environment of a Lya nebula found without a priori knowledge of its surroundings. We find that the nebula is located in an overdense region, at least 20x50 1/h_70 comoving Mpc in size, showing a factor of ~3 LAE number density enhancement relative to the edge of the field. Given the predicted number of such overdensities, we rule out the possibility of a chance coincidence at the <1% level. This study, in conjunction with previous work, provides strong confirmation of the association between the largest Lya nebulae and overdense regions of the Universe.
We report the first observation of Ly$α$ pumped molecular hydrogen emission lines in planetary nebulae. The H$_{2}$ emission observed in the ultraviolet spectra of NGC 6853 and NGC 3132 can be explained by excitation of vibrationally hot H$_{2}$ by Ly$α$ photons. Constraints are placed on the nebular Ly$α$ emission profile, as well as the molecular hydrogen temperature, column density and turbulent motion. These parameters are similar for the two nebulae, pointing to similar physical conditions in these objects. The ro-vibrational cascade following Ly$α$ pumping is predicted to have low surfac…
Using Spitzer Space Telescope IRAC (3.6-8um) and MIPS (24um) imaging, as well as Hubble Space Telescope optical observations, we identify the IRAC counterparts of the luminous power sources residing within the two largest and brightest Lyman-alpha emitting nebulae (LABs) in the SA22 protocluster at z=3.09 (LAB1 and LAB2). These sources are also both submillimeter galaxies (SMGs). From their rest-frame optical/near-infrared colors, we conclude that the SMG in LAB1 is likely to be starburst dominated and heavily obscured (Av~3). In contrast, LAB2 has excess rest-frame ~2um emission (over that ex…
We present an investigation into the possible relationship between side-to-side asymmetries of powerful radio galaxies at high redshift, with the goal of understanding the geometry, orientation and gas dynamics of these sources. Our sample consists of 11 radio galaxies at 2.3<z<3.6 previously known to have giant, kinematically quiescent nebulae. We identify several correlated asymmetries: on the side of the brightest radio jet and hotspot (i) the redshift of the kinematically quiescent nebula is highest, (ii) Ly-alpha is brighter relative to the other lines and continuum, (iii) the radio spect…
Recently, we conducted a Very Large Telescope (VLT) large program to search for forming clusters by looking for overdensities of Ly-alpha emitters around high redshift radio galaxies. In total seven proto-clusters were discovered, including a proto-cluster around the radio galaxy MRC 0316--257 at z ~ 3.13. This structure has an excess of Ly-alpha emitters by a factor of 3 as compared to the field, and the derived mass is 2-5 x 10^14 M_sun. The Ly-alpha emitters in the proto-cluster are on average bluer than Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs). Also, the galaxies are faint (sub L_*) and small (half lig…
We have identified an obvious and strong large scale structure at redshift z=5.75 in a wide (31 by 33 arcminute) field, narrowband survey of the Chandra Deep Field South region. This structure is traced by 17 candidate Lyman alpha emitters, among which 12 are found in an 823nm filter (corresponding to Lyman alpha at z=5.77 +- 0.03) and 5 in an 815nm image (z=5.70 +- 0.03). The Lyman alpha emitters in both redshift bins are concentrated in one quadrant of the field. The Hubble Ultra Deep Field, Chandra Deep Field South, and GOODS-South fields all lie near the edge of this overdense region. Our …
Quasars trace the most massive structures at high redshifts and their presence may influence the evolution of the massive host galaxies. We study the extended Lyman alpha emission line regions (EELRs) around seven bright, mostly radio-quiet quasars (QSOs) at 2.7<z<4.5, and compare luminosities with EELRs around radio-loud QSOs reported in the literature. Using integral field spectroscopy, we analyse the morphology and kinematics of the quiescent Lya EELRs around the QSOs. We find evidence for the presence of EELRs around four radio-quiet and one radio-loud QSO. All EELRs appear asymmetric and …
The rapid localization of GRB 021004 by the HETE-2 satellite allowed nearly continuous monitoring of its early optical afterglow decay, as well as high-quality optical spectra that determined a redshift of z=2.328 for its host, an active starburst galaxy with strong Lyman-alpha emission and several absorption lines. Spectral observations show multiple absorbers blueshifted by up to 3,155 km/s relative to the host galaxy Lyman-alpha emission. We argue that these correspond to a fragmented shell nebula, gradually enriched by a Wolf-Rayet wind over the lifetime of a massive progenitor bubble. In t…
We explore empirical relations between three different populations of high-redshift galaxies and their hosting dark halos employing the halo model approach. Specifically we consider Lyman-break galaxies at z\sim4 and at z\sim5, and Lyman-Alpha emitters at z\simeq 4.86. We adopt a halo occupation function prescription to parameterize the properties of their hosting halos and the efficiency of halo-dependent star formation. We find that the two LBG samples are well described by the halo model with an appropriate HOF. We obtain constraints on properties of their hosting halos. A typical mass of h…
The spatial distribution of Ly-alpha forest absorption systems towards ten QSOs has been analysed to search for large-scale structure over the redshift range 2.2 < z < 3.4. The QSOs form a closely spaced group on the sky and are concentrated within a 1 deg^2 field. We have employed a technique based on the first and second moments of the transmission probability density function which is capable of identifying and assessing the significance of regions of over- or underdense Ly-alpha absorption. We find evidence for large-scale structure in the distribution of Ly-alpha forest absorption at the …
To obtain an unbiased sample of bright LyA blobs [L(LyA) > 10^43 ergs/s], we have undertaken a blind, wide-field, narrow-band imaging survey in the NOAO Deep Wide Field Survey Bootes field with the Steward Bok-2.3m telescope. After searching over 4.82 sq. degrees at z=2.3, we discover four LyA blobs with L(LyA) = 1.6-5.3 x 10^43 ergs/s, isophotal areas of 28-57 sq. arcsec, and broad LyA line profiles (FWHM = 900-1250 km/s). In contrast with the extended Lyman alpha halos associated with high-z radio galaxies, none of our four blobs are radio-loud. The X-ray luminosities and optical spectra of …
[Abridged] We present the results of a large program conducted with the Very Large Telescope and Keck telescope to search for forming clusters of galaxies near powerful radio galaxies at 2.0 < z < 5.2. We obtained narrow- and broad-band images of nine radio galaxies and their surroundings. The imaging was used to select candidate Lyman alpha emitting galaxies in ~3x3 Mpc^2 areas near the radio galaxies. A total of 337 candidate emitters were found with a rest-frame Lyman alpha equivalent width of EW_0 > 15 A and Sigma = EW_0/Delta EW_0 > 3. Follow-up spectroscopy confirmed 168 Lyman alpha emit…
We calculate the impact of the intergalactic medium (IGM) on the observed Lyman alpha lines (hereafter Lya) emitted by galaxies in an ionised IGM at z>4. Our model accounts for gas clumping in the IGM and for the fact that high-redshift galaxies reside in overdense regions, which causes the velocity field of the IGM to depart from the Hubble flow. The observed shape of the Lya line varies widely, with dependence on the intrinsic width and systemic velocity of the line, a galaxies star formation rate and the local extra-galactic UV-background. For large star formation rates and levels of the UV…
We carried out a target survey for Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) and Lyman alpha emitters (LAEs) around QSO SDSS J0211-0009 at z=4.87. The deep and wide broadband and narrowband imaging simultaneously revealed the perspective structure of these two high-z populations. The LBGs without Ly-alpha emission form a filamentary structure including the QSO, while the LAEs are distributed around the QSO but avoid it within a distance of ~4.5Mpc. On the other hand, we serendipitously discovered a protocluster with a significant concentration of LBGs and LAEs where no strongly UV ionizing source such as a …
The spatial distribution of Ly-alpha forest absorption systems toward a group of 8, closely spaced QSOs has been analysed and evidence for large scale structure has been found at <z> = 2.8. Our technique is based on the first and second moments of the transmission probability density function which is capable of identifying and assessing the significance of regions of over- or underdense Ly-alpha absorption. The data has revealed at least two interesting features. 1. An overdense structure at z = 2.27 which extends at least over ~8 h^{-1} comoving Mpc (q_0 = 0.5) in the plane of the sky. Metal…
The detection and first identification of the deuterium Balmer emission lines, D-alpha and D-beta, in the core of the Orion Nebula is reported. Observations were conducted at the 3.6m Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, using the Echelle spectrograph Gecko. These lines are very narrow and have identical 11 km/s velocity shifts with respect to H-alpha and H-beta. They are probably excited by UV continuum fluorescence from the Lyman (DI) lines and arise from the interface between the HII region and the molecular cloud.
If gravitational clustering is a hierarchical process, the present large-scale structure of the galaxy distribution implies that structures on smaller scales must have formed at high redshift. We simulate the formation of small-scale structure (average cell mass: $Δ\bar m_b=10^{4.2}$M$_\odot$) and the evolution of photoionized gas, in the specific case of a CDM model with a cosmological constant. The photoionized gas has a natural minimal scale of collapse, the Jeans scale ($m_{b,J}\simeq 10^{9}$M$_\odot$). We find that low column density ($\nhi \le 10^{14}\cm^{-2}$) lines originate in regions…
Straightforward physical arguments are used to derive the properties of Lyman-alpha forest absorbers. It is shown that many aspects of the current physical picture of the forest, in particular the fact that the absorption arises in extended structures of moderate overdensities which contain a large fraction of the baryons in the universe, can be derived directly from the observations without making any specific assumptions about the presence and distribution of dark matter, the values of the cosmological parameters or the mechanism for structure formation. The key argument is that along any li…
The rapid localization of GRB 021004 by the HETE-2 satellite allowed nearly continuous monitoring of its early optical afterglow decay, as well as high-quality optical spectra that determined a redshift of z3=2.328 for its host galaxy, an active starburst galaxy with strong Lyman-alpha emission and several absorption lines. Spectral observations show multiple absorbers at z3A=2.323, z3B= 2.317, and z3C= 2.293 blueshifted by 450, 990, and 3,155 km/s respectively relative to the host galaxy Lyman-alpha emission. We argue that these correspond to a fragmented shell nebula that has been radiativel…
We use hydrodynamic simulations to predict correlations between Lya forest absorption and galaxies at redshift z~3. The probability distribution function (PDF) of Lya flux decrements shifts systematically towards higher values in the vicinity of galaxies, reflecting the overdense environments in which these galaxies reside. The predicted signal remains strong in spectra smoothed over 50-200 km/s, allowing tests with moderate resolution quasar spectra. The strong bias of high redshift galaxies towards high density regions imprints a clear signature on the flux PDF, but the predictions are not s…
We search for OVI absorption in a Keck HIRES spectrum of the z=3.62 quasar Q1422+231. Comparison of CIV measurements to cosmological simulations shows that \lya forest absorbers with N_HI > 10^{14.5} have [C/H]~=-2.5, for the UV background spectrum of Haardt & Madau (HM). Lower column density absorption arises in lower density gas, where OVI is the most sensitive metal tracer. Since OVI lines lie at wavelengths contaminated by Lyman series absorption, we interpret our Q1422 results by comparing to artificial spectra drawn from an SPH simulation of a Lambda-dominated CDM model. A search for dee…
We present the results of mapping the planetary nebula NGC6369 using multiple long slit spectra taken with the CTIO 1.5m telescope. We create two dimensional emission line images from our spectra, and use these to derive fluxes for 17 lines, the Halpha/Hbeta extinction map, the [SII] line ratio density map, and the [NII] temperature map of the nebula. We use our photoionization code constrained by these data to determine the distance, the ionizing star characteristics, and show that a clumpy hour-glass shape is the most likely three-dimensional structure for NGC6369. Note that our knowledge of…
This study presents Keck optical and infrared spectroscopy of the rest-frame ultraviolet and optical emission lines in two Lyman alpha emitting galaxies at z>2. These data provide insight on the evolution of fundamental galaxy scaling relations at early epochs, especially the luminosity-velocity and luminosity-metallicity relations. Lynx 2-9691 exhibits extended [O III] emission over a diameter of >28 kpc, reminiscent of the Lyman alpha nebulae discovered near Lyman-drop galaxies [Steidel et al 2000]. The ratios of strong nebular emission lines indicate sub-solar oxygen abundances in the range…
Spatially extended Ly-alpha sources which are faint and compact in coninuum are candidates for extremely young galaxies (age of ~<10e+7 yrs) at high redshifts. We carried out a systematic survey for extended Ly-alpha sources, using deep intermediate-band imaging data taken with the Suprime-Cam on the Subaru Telescope. Our survey covers a field of view of 33' * 25' and a redshift range of 3.24<z<4.95, down to a Ly-alpha flux of ~1e-17 ergs/cm^2/s. We identified 41 extended Ly-alpha sources. The redshift distribution of these sources shows that this kind of objects are common in the early univer…
[abridged] Using stacked Sloan Digital Sky Survey spectra, we present the detection of [OII]3727,3730 nebular emission from galaxies hosting CaII and MgII absorption line systems. Both samples of absorbers, 345 CaII systems and 3461 MgII systems, span the redshift interval 0.4 < z < 1.3; all of the former and half the latter sample are expected to be bona-fide damped Lyman-alpha (DLA) absorbers. The measured star formation rate (SFR) per absorber from light falling within the SDSS fibre apertures (corresponding to physical radii of 6-9 h^-1 kpc) is 0.11-0.14 Msol/yr for the MgII-selected DLAs …
[ABRIDGED] We are undertaking an imaging study of local star-forming galaxies in the Lyman-alpha (Lya) emission line using the Solar Blind Channel (SBC) of the ACS onboard the HST. Observations have been obtained in Lya and H-alpha (Ha) and 6 continuum filters between ~1500AA and the I-band. Previously (Hayes et al 2005) we demonstrated that the production of Lya line-only images in the SBC-only data-set is non-trivial and that supporting data is a requirement. We here develop various methods of continuum subtraction and assess their relative performance using a variety of spectral energy dist…
We model the $\lya$ forest in a spatially flat, CDM model with $Ω=0.4$, with an Eulerian hydrodynamic simulation, and find that the intergalactic, photoionized gas collapses into sheet-like and filamentary structures which produce absorption lines like those observed in the $\lya$ forest. A typical filament is $\sim 1 h^{-1} \mpc$ long with thickness $\sim 50-100 h^{-1} \kpc$ (in proper units), and baryonic mass $\sim 10^{10} h^{-1} \msun$. The gas temperature increases with time as structures with larger velocities collapse gravitationally. The predicted distributions of column densities and …
The central stars of planetary nebulae (PNe) are natural targets for FUSE due to their UV brightness. The FUSE spectra of many PNe show absorption features due to circumstellar material in species ranging from H_2 and neutrals in the photodissociation region (PDR) to ions resident in the H II region. We report results from a program designed to search for nebular components in the H_2 Lyman and Werner resonance lines that are responsible for the fluorescent excitation of H_2 in strong FUV radiation fields. Our failure to detect H_2 in absorption in several PNe with strong near-infrared H_2 emi…
We discuss the origin and physical nature of the Lya forest absorption systems as found in hydrodynamical simulations of the Intergalactic Medium in a standard Cold Dark Matter cosmology (Omega=1, H0=50 km/s/Mpc, sigma_8=0.7). The structures of the systems that give rise to the Lya forest span a wide range in morphologies, depending on the density contrast. The absorption properties of the forest clouds correlate strongly with those of the underlying physical systems from which they arise. The highest column density systems (log N_HI > 15), correspond to highly overdense spheroidal structures,…
This paper presents observations of an extended Lyman-alpha emission nebula surrounding the galaxy responsible for the Damped Lyman-alpha Absorption (DLA) line in the spectrum of the quasar Q2233+131. With the Potsdam Multi Aperture Spectrophotometer (PMAS) we measure the properties of the extended Ly-alpha emission in an area of 3"* 5" having a total line flux of (2.8+/-0.3)*10^{-16} erg cm-2 s-1, which at redshift z=3.15 corresponds to a luminosity of (2.4 -0.2/+0.3)*10^{43} erg s-1 and a size of 23 times 38 kpc. The location of the emission is spatially coincident with the previously detect…
We have observed three quasars, PKS 1127-145, Q 1331+171 and Q0054+144, with the ACIS-S aboard the Chandra X-ray Observatory, in order to measure soft X-ray absorption associated with intervening 21-cm and damped Ly$α$ absorbers. For PKS 1127-145, we detect absorption which, if associated with an intervening z_{abs}=0.312 absorber, implies a metallicity of 23% solar. If the absorption is not at z_{abs}=0.312, then the metallicity is still constrained to be less than 23% solar. The advantage of the X-ray measurement is that the derived metallicity is insensitive to ionization, inclusion of an a…
We investigate the sky distribution of z ~ 6 Lyman break galaxies selected as i'-dropouts having i' - z' > 1.45 down to z' < 26.5 in the Subaru Deep Field (SDF). We discover 37 i'-dropouts clustered in a projected comoving 21.6 x 21.6 Mpc^2 region at z = 6, showing a local density excess. Carrying out follow-up spectroscopy, we identify four of them as Lyman-alpha emitters at z = 5.92, 6.01, 6.03 and 6.03 (spread over a distance of 46.6 Mpc). The number density of the cluster itself in SDF is ~ 2.2 x 10^{-7} Mpc^{-3}, smaller than those of protoclusters (i.e., forming galaxy clusters) at z ~ 2…
We report on HST/STIS spectra of the Lyman-alpha emission in the central dominant galaxies in three rich clusters of galaxies. We find evidence for a population of clouds in the intracluster medium. We detect 10 Ly-alpha absorption systems towards the nucleus of NGC1275 with columns of N(HI) 1E12-1E14 cm-2. The detected absorption features are most consistent with associated nuclear absorption systems. There is very little nuclear absorption at the systemic velocity in NGC1275. This implies that the large columns detected in the 21 cm line towards the parsec scale radio source avoid the line of…
We report the discovery of a large-scale coherent filamentary structure of Lyman alpha emitters in a redshift space at z=3.1. We carried out spectroscopic observations to map the three dimensional structure of the belt-like feature of the Lyman alpha emitters discovered by our previous narrow-band imaging observations centered on the protocluster at z=3.1. The feature was found to consist of at least three physical filaments connecting with each other. The result is in qualitative agreement with the prediction of the 'biased' galaxy-formation theories that galaxies preferentially formed in lar…
