[ABRIDGED] We are undertaking an imaging study of local star-forming galaxies in the Lyman-alpha (Lya) emission line using the Solar Blind Channel (SBC) of the ACS onboard the HST. Observations have been obtained in Lya and H-alpha (Ha) and 6 continuum filters between ~1500AA and the I-band. Previously (Hayes et al 2005) we demonstrated that the production of Lya line-only images in the SBC-only data-set is non-trivial and that supporting data is a requirement. We here develop various methods of continuum subtraction and assess their relative performance using a variety of spectral energy distributions (SED) as input. We conclude that simple assumptions about the behavior of the ultraviolet continuum consistently lead to results that are wildly erroneous, and determine that an SED fitting approach is essential. Moreover, a single component stellar or stellar+nebular spectrum is not always sufficient for realistic template SEDs and, in order to successfully recover the input observables, care must be taken to control contributions of nebular gas and underlying stellar populations. Independent measurements of the metallicity must first be obtained, but details of the initial mass function play only a small role. We identify the need to bin together pixels in our data to obtain signal-to-noise (S/N) of ~10 in each band before processing. At S/N=10 we can recover Lya fluxes accurate to ~30% for Lya lines with intrinsic equivalent width [W(Lya)] of 10AA. This accuracy improves to ~10% for W(Lya)=100AA. We describe the image processing applied to the observations presented in Östlin et al. (2009) and the associated data-release. We also present simulations for an observing strategy for an alternative low-redshift SBC Lya imaging campaign using adjacent combinations of long-pass filters at slightly higher redshift.
We review the imaging and spectroscopic properties of the Lyman alpha emission in starburst galaxies. The Lyman alpha photons escape is largely driven by kinematical and orientation effects related to the presence of large scale expanding shells of neutral hydrogen. The various Lyman alpha profiles can be linked to the evolutionary state of the starburst. Our recent Lyman alpha imaging study using the HST-ACS is presented here: it highlights the presence of diffuse extended emission of low intensity leaking out the diffuse HI components. The similarities with the line profiles observed on high…
We report the first results from a deep Lya imaging program of local starburst galaxies with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) of the Hubble Space Telescope. The two observed galaxies ESO 350-IG038 and SBS 0335-052 have luminosities similar to those of the Magellanic Clouds but differ in their chemical composition. ESO 350-IG038 has an oxygen abundance of 1/8 solar, whereas SBS 0335-052 is known to have one of the lowest abundances among blue galaxies (~1/30). The ACS imaging reveals a complex Lya morphology, with sometimes strong offsets between the emission of Lya and the location of ste…
ESO338-IG04 is a well known, local, luminous Blue Compact Galaxy. It has a complex morphology and contains a central young starburst with compact young star clusters. The galaxy was imaged using HST/ACS in the Lyman alpha line and continuum. Using the Starburst99 synthetic spectra and other imaging data from HST/WFPC2 we developed a technique that allows us to make the first photometrically valid continuum subtraction for the LYa line. Our results are in qualitative agreement with the models of LYa escape being regulated by kinematical properties of the interstellar medium. The line-only image…
We present results of the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys spectroscopic ground-based redshift survey in the field of A1689. We measure 98 redshifts, increasing the number of spectroscopically confirmed objects by sixfold. We present two spectra from this catalog of the Sextet Arcs, images which arise from a strongly-lensed Lyman Break Galaxy (LBG) at a redshift of z=3.038. Gravitational lensing by the cluster magnifies its flux by a factor of ~16 and produces six separate images with a total r-band magnitude of r_625=21.7. The two spectra, each of which represents emission from different regio…
We present deep Hubble Space Telescope ACS and NICMOS images of six bright Lyman-break galaxy candidates that were previously discovered in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey. We find that five of the objects are consistent with unresolved point sources. Although somewhat atypical of the class, they are most likely LoBAL quasars, perhaps FeLoBALs. The sixth object, J1147, has a faint companion galaxy located ~0.8 arcsec to the southwest. The companion contributes ~8% of the flux in the observed-frame optical and infrared. It is unknown whether this companion is located at the same redshift as J1147.
We present the UDF05 project, a HST Large Program of deep ACS (F606W, F775W, F850LP) and NICMOS (F110W, F160W) imaging of three fields, two of which coincide with the NICP1-4 NICMOS parallel observations of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF). In this first paper we use the ACS data for the NICP12 field, as well as the original HUDF ACS data, to measure the UV Luminosity Function (LF) of z~5 Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) down to very faint levels. Specifically, based on a V-i, i-z selection criterion, we identify a sample of 101 and 133 candidate z~5 galaxies down to z_{850}=28.5 and 29.25 magnit…
We study the possible contribution of optical galaxies detected with the {\it Hubble} ACS instrument to the near-IR cosmic infrared (CIB) fluctuations in deep {\it Spitzer} images. The {\it Spitzer} data used in this analysis are obtained in the course of the GOODS project from which we select four independent $10^\prime\times10^\prime$ regions observed at both 3.6 and 4.5 \um. ACS source catalogs for all of these areas are used to construct maps containing only their emissions in the ACS $B, V, i, z$-bands. We find that deep Spitzer data exhibit CIB fluctuations remaining after removal of for…
We measure the surface density of i'-band dropout galaxies at z~6 through wide field HST/ACS imaging and ultra-deep Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopy. Using deep HST/ACS SDSS-i' (F775W) and SDSS-z' (F850LP) imaging from GOODS-N (200 arcmin^2), we identify 9 i'-drops satisfying an (i'-z')_AB>1.5 selection criterion to a depth of z'_AB=25.6 (corresponding to L*_UV at z~3-4). We use HK' imaging data to improve the fidelity of our sample, discriminating against lower redshift red galaxies and cool Galactic stars. Three i'-drops are consistent with M/L/T dwarf stars. We present ultra-deep Keck/DEIMOS spectr…
We have measured the rest--frame lambda~1500 Ang comoving specific luminosity density of star--forming galaxies at redshift 3.5<z<6.5 from deep images taken with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST)and the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS), obtained as part of the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS). We used color selection criteria to construct samples of star--forming galaxies at redshifts z~4, 5 and 6, identified by the signature of the 912 Ang Lyman continuum discontinuity and Lyman-alpha forest blanketing in their rest--frame UV colors (Lyman--break galaxies). The ACS samples cove…
We present the faintest spectroscopically confirmed sample of redshift four and five Lyman break galaxies to date. The sample is based on slitless grism spectra of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field region from the GRAPES (Grism ACS Program for Extragalactic Science) and PEARS (Probing Evolution and Reionization Spectroscopically) projects, using the G800L grism on the HST Advanced Camera for Surveys. We report here confirmations of 39 galaxies, pre-selected as candidate Lyman break galaxies using photometric selection criteria. We compare a "traditional" V-dropout selection to a more liberal one (wi…
From UV spectra of the bright quasar PHL 1811 recorded by FUSE and the E140M configuration on STIS, we have determined the abundances of various atomic species in a Lyman limit system at z = 0.0809 with log N(H I) = 17.98. Considerably more hydrogen may be in ionized form, since the abundances of C II, Si II, S II and Fe II are very large compared to that of O I, when compared to their respective solar abundance ratios. Our determination [O/H] = -0.19 in the H I-bearing gas indicates that the chemical enrichment of the gas is unusually high for an extragalactic QSO absorption system. However, …
We report on the discovery of a z = 3.16 Lyman-alpha emitting blob in the GOODS South field. The blob has a total Ly-alpha luminosity of ~ 10^(43) erg s^(-1) and a diameter larger than 60 kpc. The available multi-wavelength data in the GOODS field consists of 13 bands from X-rays (Chandra) to infrared (Spitzer). Unlike other discovered Ly-alpha blobs, this blob shows no obvious continuum counter-part in any of the broad-bands. In particular, no optical counter-parts are found in the deep HST/ACS imaging available. For previously published blobs, AGN (Active Galactic Nuclei) or 'superwind' mode…
We have discovered an extended Lyman alpha plume associated with a compact source at redshift 5.4 in slitless spectroscopic data from the Grism ACS Program for Extragalactic Science (GRAPES) project. The spatial extent of the emission is about 6 x 1.5 kpc (1 x 0.25 arcsec). Combining our grism data and the broadband images from the Hubble UltraDeep Field (UDF) images, we find a Lyman alpha line flux of 2e-17 erg/cm2/s and surface brightness 7e-17 erg/cm2/s/arcsec2. The UDF images show diffuse continuum emission associated with the Lyman alpha plume (hereafter UDF 5225), with three embedded kno…
We report the discovery of a luminous z=5.78 star-forming galaxy in the Chandra Deep Field South. This galaxy was selected as an `i-drop' from the GOODS public survey imaging with HST/ACS (object 3 in Stanway, Bunker & McMahon 2003, astro-ph/0302212). The large colour of (i'-z')_AB=1.6 indicated a spectral break consistent with the Lyman-alpha forest absorption short-ward of Lyman-alpha at z~6. The galaxy is very compact (marginally resolved with ACS with a half-light radius of 0.08arcsec, so r_hl<0.5kpc/h_70). We have obtained a deep (5.5-hour) spectrum of this z'(AB)=24.7 galaxy with the DEI…
We present initial results from our ongoing campaign of spectroscopic identifications of Lyman--break galaxies (LBGs) at z ~ 4, 5 and 6 with FORS2 at the ESO VLT. The sample of LBGs is selected from the HST/ACS images in the GOODS southern field (CDF--S), and here we discuss the spectroscopic properties of 103 LBGs that we have cofirmed in the redshift interval 3.5 < z < 6.3, of which 34 at z>5 and 27 between 5.5 and 6.3. As for LBGs at lower redshifts, we find that LBGs with LyA in emission are characterized by weaker intestellar absorption lines and bluer UV continua than galaxies whose LyA …
We have obtained very deep near-infrared images in the fields of 10 QSOs whose spectra contain damped Lyman-alpha absorption (DLA) systems with 1.7<z_abs <2.5. The main aim of our investigation is to provide new constraints on the properties of distant galaxies responsible for the DLA absorption. After subtracting the point spread function associated with the QSO light, we have detected galaxies very close to the QSO line of sight (projected distance 1.2-1.3arcsec) in two fields. These sources therefore represent promising candidate galaxies responsible for the DLA absorption. Placed at the ab…
We present a study of three Lyman-alpha emitting galaxies (LAEs), selected via a narrow-band survey in the GOODS northern field, and spectroscopically confirmed to have redshifts of z ~ 5.65. Using HST ACS and Spitzer IRAC data, we constrain the rest-frame UV-to-optical spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of the galaxies. Fitting stellar population synthesis models to the observed SEDs, we find best-fit stellar populations with masses between ~ 10^9 - 10^10 M_sun and ages between ~ 5 - 100 Myr, assuming a simple starburst star formation history. However, stellar populations as old as 700 Myr …
We present reduced and calibrated high resolution Lyman-alpha (Lya) images for a sample of 6 local star forming galaxies. Targets were selected to represent a range in luminosity and metallicity and to include both known Lya emitters and non-emitters. Far ultraviolet imaging was carried out with the Solar Blind Channel of the ACS on HST in the F122M (Lya on-line) and F140LP (continuum) filters. The resulting Lya images are the product of careful modeling of both the stellar and nebular continua, facilitated by supporting HST imaging in Ha and 5 continuum bands, combined with Starburst99 evolut…
Lyman-alpha is now widely used to investigate the galaxy formation and evolution in the high redshift universe. However, without a rigorous understanding of the processes which regulate the Lya escape fraction, physical interpretations of high-z observations remain questionable. We examine six nearby star-forming galaxies to disentangle the role of the dust from other parameters such as gas kinematics, geometry and ISM morphology in the obscuration of Ly-alpha. Thereby we aim to understand the Ly-a escape physics and infer the implications for high-redshift studies. We use HST/ACS to produce c…
The integrated colors of distant galaxies provide a means for interpreting the properties of their stellar content. Here, we use rest-frame UV-to-optical colors to constrain the spectral-energy distributions and stellar populations of color-selected, B-dropout galaxies at z ~ 4 in the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey. We combine the ACS data with ground-based near-infrared images, which extend the coverage of galaxies at z ~ 4 to the rest-frame B-band. We observe a color-magnitude trend in the rest-frame m(UV) - B versus B diagram for the z ~ 4 galaxies that has a fairly well-defined "b…
We describe an instrument concept that will provide simultaneous spectra for a million spatial samples on the sky. With the proposed field of view and spectral resolution, it will be able to measure redshifts and line strengths for around 2-4000 z~3-7 galaxies in a 16 night campaign. The main science driver is to obtain a complete census of the star formation properties of galaxies with 2.5<z<6.7 as a function of luminosity, environment, morphology and redshift. This survey will also allow us to study the evolution of the 3 dimensional power spectrum and test the connection between these early…
We present deep HST/ACS observations in g,r,i,z towards the z=4.1 radio galaxy TN J1338-1942 and its overdensity of >30 spectroscopically confirmed Lya emitters (LAEs). We select 66 g-band dropouts to z=27, 6 of which are also a LAE. Although our color-color selection results in a relatively broad redshift range centered on z=4.1, the field of TN J1338-1942 is richer than the average field at the >5 sigma significance, based on a comparison with GOODS. The angular distribution is filamentary with about half of the objects clustered near the radio galaxy, and a small, excess signal (2 sigma) in…
We present redshifts for 115 emission line objects in the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) identified through the GRism ACS Program for Extragalactic Science (GRAPES) project using the slitless grism spectroscopy mode of the ACS Camera on the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). The sample was selected by an emission line search on all extracted 1-dimensional GRAPES spectra. We identify the emission lines using line wavelength ratios where multiple lines are detected in the grism wavelength range (5800A < lambda < 9600A), and using photometric redshift information where multiple lines are unavailable. …
We present new evidence for mature stellar populations with ages >100Myr in massive galaxies (M_stellar>10^10M_sun) seen at a time when the Universe was less than 1Gyr old. We analyse the prominent detections of two z~6 star-forming galaxies (SBM03#1 & #3) made at wavelengths corresponding to the rest-frame optical using the IRAC camera onboard the Spitzer Space Telescope. We had previously identified these galaxies in HST/ACS GOODS images of Chandra Deep Field South through the "i-drop" Lyman break technique, and subsequently confirmed spectroscopically with the Keck telescope. The new Spitze…
In this paper we present near infrared (NIR) imaging data of the host galaxy of the broad absorption line quasar (BALQ) at z=2.169, serendipitously found close to 3C48. The data were obtained with the ESO-VLT camera ISAAC during period 67. We find extended, rest-frame optical emission around the BALQ after subtracting a scaled stellar point spread function from the quasar nucleus in J, H, and Ks. The extended rest-frame optical emission can be interpreted as an approximately 2 Gyr old stellar population composing the host galaxy of the BALQ or a stellar population of similar age associated wit…
We determine the abundance of i'-band drop-outs in the HST/ACS GOODS surveys and the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (UDF). The majority of these sources are likely to be z~6 galaxies whose flux decrement arises from Lyman-alpha absorption. We have shown with Keck/DEIMOS spectroscopy that this technique does indeed select high redshift galaxies, and we discovered Lyman-alpha emission for about a third of the galaxies with z'_AB<25.6 The increased depth of UDF enables us to reach a ~10sigma limiting magnitude of z'_AB=28.5 (equivalent to 1.5M_sun/yr at z=6.1, or 0.1L*_UV for the z~3 U-drop population).…
We include gaseous continuum and line emission into our GALEV models for the spectral and photometric evolution of Simple Stellar Populations (SSPs) for various metallicities in the range 0.02 <= Z/Zsun <= 2.5. This allows to extend them to significantly younger ages than before. They now cover the age range from 4 Myr all through 14 Gyr. We point out the very important contributions of gaseous emission to broad band fluxes and their strong metallicity dependence during very early evolutionary stages of star clusters, galaxies or subgalactic fragments with vigorous ongoing star formation. Emis…
We report results from our $z\simeq 5.5$--7 galaxy search in the HST Ultra Deep Field (UDF). Using the 400-orbit of ACS data, we found 108 plausible $5.5\leq z\leq 6.5$ (or $z\simeq 6$ for short) candidates to $m_{AB}(z_{850})=30.0$ mag. The contamination to the sample, either due to image artifacts or known types of astronomical objects, is likely negligible. The inferred surface densities of $z\simeq 6$ galaxies are consistent with our earlier predictions from $m_{AB}(z_{850})=26.5$ to 28.5 mag. After correcting for detection incompleteness, the counts of $z\simeq 6$ candidates to $m_{AB}(z_…
We combine data from the extremely deep Hubble Space Telescope $U$ (F300W) image obtained using WFPC2 as part of the parallel observations of the Hubble Ultra Deep Field campaign, with $BVi$ images from the Great Observatories Origins Deep Survey (GOODS) to identify a sample of Lyman break galaxies in the redshift range $2.0 \lesssim z \lesssim 3.5$. We use recent stellar population synthesis models with a wide variety of ages, metallicities, redshifts, and dust content, and a detailed representation of the \HI cosmic opacity as a function of redshift to model the colors of galaxies in our com…
The star-formation rates and the stellar masses of the host galaxies of AGNs at high-redshifts are keys to understanding the evolution of the relation between the mass of the spheroidal component of a galaxy and the mass of its central black hole. We investigate the host galaxies of 31 AGNs with spectroscopic redshifts between 2 and 4 found in the deep Chandra surveys of the GOODS fields with the ACS images. The sample can be divided into 17 ``extended'' AGNs and 14 ``compact'' AGNs based on the concentration parameter defined as the difference between the aperture magnitudes with 0.07" and 0.…
We are engaged in a programme of imaging with the STIS and NICMOS (NIC2) instruments aboard the Hubble Space Telescope (HST), to search for the galaxy counterparts of 18 high-redshift z>1.75 damped Lya absorption lines and 5 Lyman-limit systems seen in the spectra of 16 target quasars. This paper presents the results of the imaging campaign with the NIC2 camera. We describe the steps followed in reducing the data and combining in mosaics, and the methods used for subtracting the image of the quasar in each field, and for constructing error frames that include the systematic errors associated w…
We have performed HST imaging of a sample of 23 high-redshift (1.8<z<2.75) AGN, drawn from the COMBO-17 survey. The sample contains moderately luminous quasars (M_B ~ -23). The data are part of the GEMS imaging survey that provides high resolution optical images obtained with ACS in two bands (F606W and F850LP), sampling the rest-frame UV flux of the targets. To deblend the AGN images into nuclear and resolved (host galaxy) components we use a PSF subtraction technique that is strictly conservative with respect to the flux of the host galaxy. We resolve the host galaxies in both filter bands i…
