We present reduced and calibrated high resolution Lyman-alpha (Lya) images for a sample of 6 local star forming galaxies. Targets were selected to represent a range in luminosity and metallicity and to include both known Lya emitters and non-emitters. Far ultraviolet imaging was carried out with the Solar Blind Channel of the ACS on HST in the F122M (Lya on-line) and F140LP (continuum) filters. The resulting Lya images are the product of careful modeling of both the stellar and nebular continua, facilitated by supporting HST imaging in Ha and 5 continuum bands, combined with Starburst99 evolutionary synthesis models, and prescriptions for dust extinction on the continuum. In all, the resulting morphologies in Lya, Ha, and UV-continuum are qualitatively very different and we show that the bulk of Lya emerges in a diffuse component resulting from resonant scattering events. Lya escape fractions, computed from integrated Ha luminosities and recombination theory, are found never to exceed 14%. Internal dust extinction is estimated in each pixel and used to correct Lya fluxes. However, the extinction corrections are far too small (factors from 2.6 to infinity) to reconcile the global Lya luminosities with recombination theory. Surprisingly, when comparing the global equivalent widths of Lya and Ha, the two quantities appear anti-correlated, which may be due to the evolution of mechanical feedback. This calls for caution in the interpretation of Lya observations. The images presented have a physical resolution 3 orders of magnitude better than attainable at high-z from the ground with current instrumentation and our images may therefore serve as useful templates for comparing with observations and modeling of primeval galaxy formation. We therefore provide the reduced Lya, Ha, and continuum images to the community.
We review the imaging and spectroscopic properties of the Lyman alpha emission in starburst galaxies. The Lyman alpha photons escape is largely driven by kinematical and orientation effects related to the presence of large scale expanding shells of neutral hydrogen. The various Lyman alpha profiles can be linked to the evolutionary state of the starburst. Our recent Lyman alpha imaging study using the HST-ACS is presented here: it highlights the presence of diffuse extended emission of low intensity leaking out the diffuse HI components. The similarities with the line profiles observed on high…
HST imaging and slitless spectroscopy are used to examine where the strong Lyman alpha emission escapes from the interstellar medium in the starburst galaxy Mkn 357. An H-alpha image shows that the ionized gas is mostly in a global wind, rather than associated with the individual star-forming regions seen in the optical and UV continuum. The Lyman alpha emission comes predominantly from the northwest side of the wind structure spatially, and shows a significant redshift relative to the optical lines. Both of these properties are signatures of seeing the line photons backscattered from the far …
We review the history and the current status of the understanding of the processes that regulate Lyman alpha emission from star-forming galaxies. We present some of the most recent results of our study to image local starburst galaxies in the Lyman alpha emission line using the Advanced Camera for Surveys on the Hubble Space Telescope. Particular attention is dedicated to our study of the low-metallicity, dust-poor Blue Compact Galaxy ESO338-IG04. We discuss some of our local observational results with reference to the interpretation of results of high-redshift Lyman alpha surveys and recent s…
We present new VLA C-configuration HI imaging of the Lyman Alpha-emitting starburst galaxies Tol 1924-416 and IRAS 08339+6517. The effective resolution probes neutral gas structures larger than 4.7 kpc in Tol 1924-416, and larger than 8.1 kpc in IRAS 08339+6517. Both systems are revealed to be tidally interacting: Tol 1924-416 with ESO 338-IG04B (6.6 arcminutes = 72 kpc minimum separation), and IRAS 08339+6517 with 2MASX J08380769+6508579 (2.4 arcminutes = 56 kpc minimum separation). The HI emission is extended in these systems, with tidal tails and debris between the target galaxies and their…
The dominating reionization source in the young universe has yet to be identified. Possible candidates include metal poor starburst dwarf galaxies of which the Blue Compact Galaxy Haro 11 may represent a local counterpart. Using the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer (FUSE) we obtained spectra of Haro 11 to search for leaking ionizing radiation. A weak signal shortwards of the Lyman break is identified as Lyman continuum (LyC) emission escaping from the ongoing starburst. From profile fitting to weak metal lines we derive column densities of the low ionization species. Adopting a metallici…
We derive the bolometric to X-ray correlation for a local sample of normal and starburst galaxies and use it, in combination with several UV reddening schemes, to predict the 2--8 keV X-ray luminosity for a sample of 24 Lyman-break galaxies in the HDF/CDF-N. We find that the mean X-ray luminosity, as predicted from the Meurer UV reddening relation for starburst galaxies, agrees extremely well with the Brandt stacking analysis. This provides additional evidence that Lyman-break galaxies can be considered as scaled-up local starbursts and that the locally derived starburst UV reddening relation …
We have reevaluated the constraints on the Lyman continuum emission from four starburst galaxies observed with the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope (HUT) during the Astro-2 mission. Applying a detailed model of the absorption by interstellar gases in our Galaxy, and using the latest HUT data products, we find upper limits to the redshifted Lyman continuum that are less restrictive than those reported previously (Leitherer et al. 1995 ApJ, 454, L19). Well determined astrophysical and instrumental effects permit 2-sigma upper limits no tighter than 5.2%, 11%, 57%, and 3.2% to be set on the escape f…
We present the results of a high resolution UV 2-D spectroscopic survey of star forming galaxies observed with HST-STIS. Our main aim was to map the Lyman alpha profiles to learn about the gas kinematics and its relation with the escape of Lyman alpha photons and to detect extended Lyman alpha emission due to scattering in gaseous halos. We have combined our data with previously obtained UV spectroscopy on other three star-forming galaxies. We find that the P-Cygni profile is spatially extended, smooth and spans several kiloparsecs covering a region much larger than the starburst itself. We pr…
Using the IRAM Plateau de Bure Interferometer, we have searched for CO(3-2) emission from the dusty Lyman break galaxy Westphal-MD11 at z = 2.98. Our sensitive upper limit is surprisingly low relative to the system's 850 um flux density and implies a far-IR/CO luminosity ratio as elevated as those seen in local ultraluminous mergers. We conclude that the observed dust emission must originate in a compact structure radiating near its blackbody limit and that a relatively modest molecular gas reservoir must be fuelling an intense nuclear starburst (and/or deeply buried active nucleus) that may h…
We investigate a very luminous Lyman-alpha emitting galaxy, associated with a z=2.3 damped absorption system in the spectrum of the QSO PHL 957. The galaxy was observed with the HST WFPC2, through a narrow filter (F410M) corresponding to rest-frame Lyman -alpha, for 41.2 ksec, with shorter exposures in F555W and F814W. The galaxy is resolved into a close (0.35 arcsec) pair of two components, CFgA and CFgB. The profile of CFgA is consistent with an exponential disk, but CFgB is closer to a bulge galaxy. Fr om the observed colours we estimate rest-frame Lyman-alpha equivalent widths of 151 Angst…
We investigate the Lyman alpha line transfer in nearby and high redshift starbursting galaxies, where the effect of high optical depths and the role of dust in the scattering medium are expected to be conspicuous and should be treated in a very careful manner. We present our first results in dustless, static, and uniform HI media with moderate Lyman alpha line center optical depths τ_0=10^{3-6}. We assume that the temperatures of media to be T=10^{1-4}K, and use a Monte Carlo technique. We investigate the basic processes of the line transfer and confirm the criterion of aτ_0>10^3 for the valid…
In order to study the origin of the strong Lyman-alpha emission of high-redshift starburst galaxies we observed and modeled the emission of the z = 3.304 galaxy FDF-4691 (rest-frame EW = 103 Angstroem). The observations show that FDF-4691 is a young starburst galaxy with a (for this redshift) typical metallicity. The broad, double-peaked profile of the Lyman-alpha emission line can be explained assuming a highly turbulent emission region in the inner part of the starburst galaxy, and a surrounding extended shell of low-density neutral gas with a normal dust/gas ratio and with Galactic dust pro…
Nearby starburst galaxies have consistently shown anomalous Ly-alpha/H-beta ratios. By re-analysing the published IUE/optical observations, we show that most starbursts present a normal Ly-alpha emission, consistent with case B recombination theory, provided extinction laws appropriate to their metallicities are used. This implies that extinction is more important than multiple resonant scattering effects. The anomalous emission and absorption lines present in a few remaining galaxies are simply explained if they are observed in the post-burst phase, between about 10$^7$ and 10$^8$ yrs after t…
A model for gas outflows is proposed which simultaneously explains the correlations between the (i) equivalent width of low ionization and Ly-alpha lines, (ii) outflow velocity, and (iii) star formation rate observed in Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs). Our interpretation implies that LBGs host short-lived (30 +/- 5 Myr) starburst episodes observed at different evolutionary phases. Initially, the starburst powers a hot wind bound by a denser cold shell, which after about 5 Myr becomes dynamically unstable and fragments; afterwards the fragment evolution is approximately ballistic while the hot bubb…
Do disk galaxies exist at redshifts much greater than unity, and how might they look different from local disks? How does the morphological mix of galaxies change with redshift? What can we learn from current observations about the properties of high redshift galactic disks? I present theoretical predictions based on semi-analytic hierarchical models, focussing on the role played by interactions, mergers, and starbursts in determining the observable properties of disk galaxies at high redshift, and discuss the interpretation of high redshift observations of possible proto-disks (damped Lyman-$…
ESO338-IG04 is a well known, local, luminous Blue Compact Galaxy. It has a complex morphology and contains a central young starburst with compact young star clusters. The galaxy was imaged using HST/ACS in the Lyman alpha line and continuum. Using the Starburst99 synthetic spectra and other imaging data from HST/WFPC2 we developed a technique that allows us to make the first photometrically valid continuum subtraction for the LYa line. Our results are in qualitative agreement with the models of LYa escape being regulated by kinematical properties of the interstellar medium. The line-only image…
I discuss the properties of gas-rich forming galaxies. I particularly emphasize the latest results on Lyman alpha emission that are relevant to the search of distant young galaxies. The interdependance of the Lyman alpha escape with the properties of the ISM in starburst galaxies is outlined. A new model from G. Tenorio-Tagle and his collaborators explaining Lyman alpha profiles in starburst galaxies from the hydrodynamics of superbubbles powered by massive stars is presented. I stress again that since Lyman alpha is primarely a diagnostic of the ISM, it is mandatory to understand how the ISM …
We report the first results from a deep Lya imaging program of local starburst galaxies with the Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) of the Hubble Space Telescope. The two observed galaxies ESO 350-IG038 and SBS 0335-052 have luminosities similar to those of the Magellanic Clouds but differ in their chemical composition. ESO 350-IG038 has an oxygen abundance of 1/8 solar, whereas SBS 0335-052 is known to have one of the lowest abundances among blue galaxies (~1/30). The ACS imaging reveals a complex Lya morphology, with sometimes strong offsets between the emission of Lya and the location of ste…
(Abridged) Lyman-alpha (Lya) is a dominant probe of the galaxy population at high-z. However, interpretation of data drawn from Lya alone hinges on the Lya escape fraction which, due to the complex radiative transport, may vary greatly. Here we map the Lya emission from local starburst Haro 11, a Lya emitter and the only known candidate for low-z Lyman continuum emission (LyC). To aid in the interpretation we perform a detailed multi-wavelength analysis and model the stellar population, dust distribution, ionising photon budget, and star-cluster population. We use archival X-ray observations t…
We have computed the evolving ultraviolet-millimeter spectral energy distribution (SED) produced by proto-galactic starbursts at high redshift, incorporating the chemical evolution of the interstellar medium in a consistent manner. Dust extinction is calculated in a novel way, that is not based on empirical calibrations of extinction curves, but rather on the lifetime of molecular clouds which delays the emergence of each successive generation of stars at ultraviolet wavelengths by typically 15 Myr. The predicted rest-frame far-infrared to millimeter-wave emission includes the calculation of m…
Using our 3D Lya radiation transfer code, we compute the radiation transfer of Lya and UV continuum photons including dust. Observational constraints on the neutral gas (column density, kinematics, etc.) are taken from other analysis of this object. RESULTS: The observed Lya profile of MS 1512--cB58 is reproduced for the first time taking radiation transfer and all observational constraints into account. The observed absorption profile is found to result naturally from the observed amount of dust and the relatively high HI column density. Radiation transfer effects and suppresion by dust trans…
Heckman et al. (2005) used the Galaxy Evolution Explorer (GALEX) UV imaging survey to show that there exists a rare population of nearby compact UV-luminous galaxies (UVLGs) that closely resembles high redshift Lyman break galaxies (LBGs). We present HST images in the UV, optical, and Ha, and resimulate them at the depth and resolution of the GOODS/UDF fields to show that the morphologies of UVLGs are also similar to those of LBGs. Our sample of 8 LBG analogs thus provides detailed insight into the connection between star formation and LBG morphology. Faint tidal features or companions can be …
In this contribution I introduce some of the major issues that motivate the conference, with an emphasis on how starbursts fit into the ``big picture''. I begin by defining starbursts in several different ways, and discuss the merits and limitations of these definitions. I will argue that the most physically useful definition of a starburst is its ``intensity'' (star formation rate per unit area). This is the most natural parameter to compare local starbursts with physically similar galaxies at high redshift, and indeed I will argue that local starbursts are unique laboratories to study the pr…
Far-ultraviolet spectra obtained with $FUSE$ show that the strong $CIIλ$1036 interstellar absorption-line is essentially black in five of the UV-brightest local starburst galaxies. Since the opacity of the neutral ISM below the Lyman-edge will be significantly larger than in the $CII$ line, these data provide strong constraints on the escape of ionizing radiation from these starbursts. Interpreted as a a uniform absorbing slab, the implied optical depth at the Lyman edge is huge ($τ_0 \geq 10^2$). Alternatively, the areal covering factor of opaque material is typically $\geq$ 94%. Thus, the fr…
The Lya line transfer in an extremely thick medium of neutral hydrogen is investigated by adopting an accelerating scheme in our Monte Carlo code to skip a large number of core or resonant scatterings. This scheme reduces computing time significantly with no sacrifice in the accuracy of the results. We applied this numerical method to the Lya transfer in a static, uniform, dustless, and plane-parallel medium. Two types of photon sources have been considered, the midplane source and the uniformly distributed sources. The emergent profiles show double peaks and absorption trough at the line-cent…
Selection of starbursts through either deep narrow band imaging of redshifted Ly-alpha emitters, or localisation of host galaxies of gamma-ray bursts both give access to starburst galaxies that are significantly fainter than what is currently available from selection techniques based on the continuum (such as Lyman-break selection). We here present results from a survey for Ly-alpha emitters at z=3, conducted at the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope. Furthermore, we briefly describe the properties of host galaxies of gamma-ray bursts at z>2. The majority of both Ly-alpha and…
We present results from stacking analyses, using the 1 Ms Chandra Deep Field North data, that constrain the X-ray emission of Lyman break galaxies at z = 2-4. Stacking the counts from 24 individually undetected Lyman break galaxies located within the Hubble Deep Field North, we have obtained average detections of these objects in the resulting 0.5-8.0 keV and 0.5-2.0 keV images; these images have effective exposure times of 22.4 Ms (260 days). Monte Carlo testing empirically shows the detections to be highly significant. The average rest-frame 2-8 keV luminosity of a Lyman break galaxy is deri…
What type of objects are being detected as $z\sim 3$ "Lyman break galaxies"? Are they predominantly the most massive galaxies at that epoch, or are many of them smaller galaxies undergoing a short-lived burst of merger-induced star formation? We attempt to address this question using high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamic simulations including star formation and feedback. Our $Λ$CDM simulation, together with Bruzual-Charlot population synthesis models, reproduces the observed number density and luminosity function of Lyman break galaxies when dust is incorporated. The inclusion of dust is c…
We examine spectral properties of the ionising continua, the Lyman-break, and the Ly-a and HeII 1640 recombination lines in starbursts. The transition from primordial galaxies to currently observed metallicities, is examined. For the average properties of starbursts, the main findings are: 1) The Lyman continuum flux increases with decreasing metallicity. For a universal Salpeter IMF from 1-100 Msun the enhancement reaches typically a factor of ~3 between solar metallicity and Pop III objects. 2) While for metallicities Z >~ 1/50 Zsun the amplitude of the Lyman-break depends little on Z, a red…
The most remarkable class of high-redshift objects observed so far is extended Ly$α$ emission-line blobs found in an over-density region at redshift 3.1. They may be either a dust-enshrouded, extreme starburst galaxy with a large-scale galactic outflow (superwind) or cooling radiation from dark matter halos. Recently one of these Ly$α$ blobs has been detected at submillimeter wavelengths (450 and 850 $μ$m). Here we show that its rest-frame spectral energy distribution between optical and far-infrared is quite similar to that of Arp 220, which is a typical ultraluminous starburst/superwind gala…
We examine deep far-ultraviolet (1600 Angstrom) imaging of the Hubble Deep Field-North (HDFN) and the Hubble Ultra Deep Field (HUDF) to search for leaking Lyman continuum radiation from starburst galaxies at z~1.3. There are 21 (primarily sub-L*) galaxies with spectroscopic redshifts between 1.1<z<1.5 and none are detected in the far-UV. We fit stellar population templates to the galaxies' optical/near-infrared SEDs to determine the starburst age and level of dust attenuation, giving an accurate estimate of the intrinsic Lyman continuum ratio, f_1500/f_700, and allowing a conversion from f_700…
We present non-LTE diagnostics of the filament observed by SOHO/SUMER on May 27, 2005 in the whole Lyman series. The filament was situated close to the disk center. The Ly_alpha observations were carried out with normal voltage of detector A. The slit was placed at the central part of the detector -- outside the Ly_alpha attenuator. Therefore, the observed profiles of this line could be calibrated reliably.
Thomson scattering of the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) on moving electrons in the outflows of Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) at redshifts 2-8 contributes to the small-scale CMB anisotropies. The net effect produced by each outflow depends on its level of deviation from spherical symmetry, caused either by an anisotropic energy injection from the nuclear starburst or quasar activity, or by an inhomogeneous intergalactic environment. We find that for plausible outflow parameters consistent with spectroscopic observations of LBGs, the induced CMB anisotropies on arcminute scales reach up to $\s…
Using semi-analytic models of galaxy formation, we investigate the properties of $z\sim3$ galaxies and compare them with the observed population of Lyman-break galaxies (LBGs). In addition to the usual quiescent mode of star formation, we introduce a physical model for starbursts triggered by galaxy-galaxy interactions. We find that with the merger rate that arises naturally in the CDM-based merging hierarchy, a significant fraction of bright galaxies identified at high redshift ($z \ga 2$) are likely to be low-mass, bursting satellite galaxies. The abundance of LBGs as a function of redshift …
We refine a technique to measure the absorption corrected ultraviolet (UV) luminosity of starburst galaxies using rest frame UV quantities alone, and apply it to U-dropouts at z ~ 3 found in the Hubble Deep Field. The method is based on an observed correlation between the ratio of far infrared (FIR) to UV fluxes with spectral slope β(a UV color). A simple fit to this relation allows the UV flux absorbed by dust to be calculated, and hence the dust-free UV luminosity to be determined. IUE spectra and IRAS fluxes of local starbursts are used to calibrate the ratio in terms of 1600 Angstrom absor…
We present J band observations of a complete sample of 57 red galaxies selected to have K<20 and R-K>5.3. We use the Pozzetti and Mannucci (2000) prescriptions, based on the R-K and J-K colours, to separate the two dominant populations, old ellipticals and dusty starbursts. We find that both populations are present in the current sample and have similar abundances, and discuss the uncertainties in this result. Galactic stars comprise about 9% of the objects. The starburst galaxies of the present sample are found to give a contribution to the cosmic star formation density similar to the Lyman-b…
As part of a large spectroscopic survey of z>5 Lyman break galaxies (LBGs), we have identified a single source which is clearly hosting an AGN. Out of a sample of more than fifty spectroscopically-confirmed R-band dropout galaxies at z~5 and above, only J104048.6-115550.2 at z=5.44 shows evidence for a high ionisation-potential emission-line indicating the presence of a hard ionising continuum from an AGN. Like most objects in our sample the rest-frame-UV spectrum shows the UV continuum breaking across a Ly_alpha line. Uniquely within this sample of LBGs, emission from NV is also detected, a c…
We detect 1.2mm continuum emission from dust in the gravitationally lensed Lyman break galaxy MS 1512+36-cB58. Our detected flux is surprisingly low: relative to local starburst galaxies, cB58 appears to produce somewhat less far-IR emission than its UV reddening predicts. After comparing several different estimates of the source's dust content, we conclude that the apparent discrepancy is most likely related to uncertainty in its UV spectral slope. Alternate scenarios to account for a far-IR "deficit" which rely on a high dust temperature or differential magnification are less satisfactory. O…
We investigate expected sub-mm emission and dust properties of the Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs) in the Hubble Deep Field (HDF). The SCUBA Deep Survey (Hughes et al., 1998) provides an upper limit of the 850 micron flux densities of the LBGs. With this constraint, we argue that a typical ultra-violet to far-infrared spectral shape of the high-redshift LBGs is rather close to a template spectrum of low-reddening starburst galaxies in the local universe but different from that of heavily dust-enshrouded ultra-luminous far-infrared galaxies like Arp220. We also evaluate the lower-limit temperature …
Motivated by the observed discrepancy between the strong spatial correlations of Lyman break galaxies (LBGs) and their velocity dispersions, we consider a theoretical model in which these starbursting galaxies are associated with dark matter halos that experience appreciable infall of material. We show using numerical simulation that selecting halos that substantially increase in mass within a fixed time interval introduces a ``temporal bias'' which boosts their clustering above that of the underlying population. If time intervals consistent with the observed LBGs star formation rates of 50 so…
We identify a concordant model for the intergalactic medium (IGM) at redshift z=1.9 that uses popular values for cosmological and astrophysical parameters and accounts for all baryons with an uncertainty of 6%. We have measured the amount of absorption, DA, in the Ly-alpha forest at redshift 1.9 in spectra of 77 QSO from the Kast spectrograph. We calibrated the continuum fits with realistic artificial spectra, and we found that averaged over all 77 QSOs the mean continuum level is within 1-2% of the correct value. Absorption from all lines in the Ly-alpha forest at z=1.9 removes DA=15.1 +/- 0.…
The properties of starbursts in ultraluminous infrared galaxies are discussed, with particular emphasis on the fueling, the amount of extinction and the intrinsic properties of the nuclear starbursts. It is shown by the example of NGC6240 that the H_2 vibrational lines can be used to measure the rate of gas inflow into the potential well, which is sufficient to fuel a nuclear starburst of the intensity required to account for the far-infrared emission. It is shown that in Arp220 the faintness of all tracers of ionized gas can be accounted for by Lyman continuum absorption by dust within the io…
The nature of the starburst phenomenon in galaxies is investigated using a narrow band color system designed to study color evolution in distant clusters. Work on zero redshift, luminous far-IR galaxies, calibrated by starburst models, demonstrates the usefulness of this color system in isolating starburst from normal star-forming colors, and also demonstrates a strong correlation with far-IR colors despite reddening effects. The same color system applied to distant clusters finds that a majority of the faint blue cluster population are starburst dwarf galaxies, probably the progenitor of the …
By means of detailed chemical evolution models for galaxies of different morphological types (i.e. spirals, irregular/starburst galaxies and ellipticals) we study the nature of Damped Lyman-Alpha systems. Our concern is to infer which systems represent likely candidates for the DLA population and which do not. By focusing on individual systems, we can derive some constraints on both the nature of the associated galaxy and its age. Our results indicate that, owing to their high metallicities and [alpha/Fe] ratios, big spheroids represent unlikely DLA candidates whereas spirals (observed at diff…
A spectral evolution model of galaxies that includes both stellar and dust effects is newly built. xApplying the model to 22 nearby starburst galaxies, we have shown that far infrared luminosity of galaxies helps to break the age-dustiness degeneracy. We have derived a unique solution of age and the dustiness for each starburst galaxy. The resulting starburst ages and optical depths are in the range $10 \le t (Myr) \le 500$ and $0.5 \le τ_{V} \le 5.0$, respectively. The result is robust and is almost independent of model assumptions such as dust distributions, extinction curves, and burst stre…
We present the results of an intermediate resolution (~2 angstrom) spectroscopy of a sample of 37 candidate Lyman alpha blobs and emitters at redshift z=3.1 using the DEIMOS spectrograph on the 10 m Keck telescope. The emission lines are detected for all the 37 objects and have variety in their line profiles. The Lyman alpha velocity widths (FWHM) of the 28 objects with higher quality spectra, measured by fitting a single Gaussian profile, are in the range of 150 - 1700 km/s and correlate with the Lyman alpha spatial extents. All the 12 Lyman alpha blobs (>16 arcsec^2) have large velocity widt…
We have analyzed FUSE, XMM, and Chandra observations of VV 114, a local galaxy merger with strong similarities to typical high-redshift Lyman Break Galaxies (LBGs). Diffuse thermal X-ray emission encompassing VV114 has been observed by Chandra and XMM. This region of hot (kT~0.59 keV) gas has an enhanced alpha to iron element ratio relative to solar abundances and follows the same relation as typical starbursts between its properties (luminosity, size, and temperature) and those of the starburst galaxy (star formation rate, dust temperature, galaxy mass). These results are consistent with the …
We report on the discovery of a bright Lyman alpha blob associated with the z=3 quasar SDSSJ124020.91+145535.6 which is also coincident with strong damped Lyman alpha absorption from a foreground galaxy (a so-called proximate damped Lyman alpha system; PDLA). The one dimensional spectrum acquired by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) shows a broad Lyman alpha emission line with a FWHM ~ 500 km/s and a luminosity of L_{Lya} = 3.9e43 erg/s superposed on the trough of the PDLA. Mechanisms for powering this large Lyman alpha luminosity are discussed. We argue against emission from HII regions in …
We study the nature of Damped Lyman -Alpha systems (DLAs) by means of a comparison between observed abundances and models of chemical evolution of galaxies of different morphological type. In particular, we compare for the first time the abundance ratios as functions of metallicity and redshift with dust-corrected data. We have developed detailed models following the evolution of several chemical elements (H, D, He, C, N, O, Ne, Mg, Si, S, Fe, Ni and Zn) for elliptical, spiral and irregular galaxies. Each of the models is calibrated to reproduce the main features of a massive elliptical, the M…
Star formation rates in galaxies are frequently estimated using the Balmer line fluxes. However, these can be systematically underestimated because dust competes for the absorption of Lyman continuum photons in the ionized gas. Here we present theoretical correction factors in a simple analytic form. T These factors scale as the product of the ionization parameter, ${\cal U}$, and the nebular O/H abundance ratio, both of which can now be derived from the observation of bright nebular line ratios. The correction factors are only somewhat dependent upon the photoelectron production by grains, bu…
To make direct comparisons in the rest-far-ultraviolet between LBGs at z~3 and more local star-forming galaxies, we use HST/STIS to image a set of 12 nearby (z<0.05) HII galaxies in the FUV and a set of 14 luminous compact blue galaxies (LCBGs) at moderate redshift (z~0.5) in the NUV, corresponding to the rest-FUV. We then subject both sets of galaxy images and those of LBGs at z~3 to the same morphological and structural analysis. We find many qualitative and quantitative similarities between the rest-FUV characteristics of distant LBGs and of the more nearby starburst samples, including gene…
We report the results of a systematic study of the vacuum-ultraviolet spectra of 45 starburst and related galaxies observed with the IUE satellite. These span broad ranges in metallicity, bolometric luminosity, and galaxy properties. The projected size of the IUE spectroscopic aperture is typically one to several kpc and therefore usually encompasses the entire starburst and is similar to the aperture-sizes used for spectroscopy of high-redshift galaxies. Our principal conclusion is that local starbursts occupy a very small fractional volume in the multi-dimensional manifold defined by such fu…
I review the results obtained using the GHRS on low redshift Lyman alpha absorbers. Until the advent of HST and the GHRS, the existence of such absorbers was doubted. The confirmation of their existence, in one of the first GHRS GTO team results to be published, must rank as one of the HSTs most interesting results. The GHRS resolution allows us to probe equivalent widths well below those detectable with the FOS, and has led to a number of interesting new questions. One example is the apparent disagreement between the GHRS result that there are many Lyman alpha absorbers which are not associat…
We present the results from a submm survey of a sample of 23 giant Lya emitting nebulae in the overdensity at z=3.09 in the SA22 field. These objects, which have become known as Lya Blobs (LABs) have a diverse range of morphology and surface brightness, but the nature of their power source is unclear - with cooling flows and/or AGN/starburst ionised winds being possibilities. Using the SCUBA submm camera we measure the 850um flux of a sample of LABs, detecting four LABs at >3.5sigma individually, and a modest statistical detection of the full sample at about 3mJy. These fluxes correspond to bo…
A significant fraction of the high-redshift galaxies show strong Lyman emission lines. For redshifts z>5, most known galaxies belong to this class. However, so far not much is known about the physical structure and nature of these objects. Our aim is to analyse the Lyman alpha emission in a sample of high-redshift UV-continuum selected galaxies and to derive the physical conditions that determine the Lyman alpha profile and the line strength. VLT/FORS spectra with a resolution of R ~ 2000 of 16 galaxies in the redshift range of z = 2.7 to 5 are presented. The observed Lyman alpha profiles are …
We present new ISO-SWS data for a sample of 27 starburst galaxies, and with these data examine the issues of formation and evolution of the most massive stars in starburst galaxies. Using starburst models which incorporate time evolution, new stellar atmosphere models for massive stars, and a starburst model geometry derived from observations of the prototypical starburst M82, we model the integrated mid-infrared line ratio [NeIII](15.6 microns)/[NeII](12.8 microns). This line ratio is sensitive to the hardness of the stellar energy distribution and therefore to the most massive stars present.…
Previous modelling has demonstrated that it is difficult to reproduce the SCUBA source counts within the framework of standard hierarchical structure formation models if the sources are assumed to be the high-redshift counterparts of local ultra-luminous infrared galaxies with dust temperatures in the range 40-60 K. Here, we show that the counts are more easily reproduced in a model in which the bulk of the sub-millimetre emission comes from extended, cool (20-25 K) dust in objects with star formation rates of 50-100 solar masses per year. The low temperatures imply typical sizes of about 1 (S…
We have obtained a Hubble Space Telescope ultraviolet image and spectrum of the nearby Wolf-Rayet galaxy NGC 1741. The spatial morphology from the Faint Object Camera image is dominated by two main starburst centers, each being about 100 times as luminous as 30 Doradus. Both starburst centers are composed of several intense knots of recent star formation. A Goddard High Resolution Spectrograph spectrum of a portion of the southern starburst center is consistent with a population of young stars following a Salpeter IMF for masses above approx 15 Msun (lower mass stars may also be present), and …
Star-formation and the Starburst phenomenon are presented with respect to a number of nearby star-forming galaxies where our understanding of the process can be calibrated. Methods of estimating star-formation rates are discussed together with the role played in the investigation of the process by multi-wavelength studies of a few selected starburst galaxies (especially the well studied galaxy M82). Our understanding of nearby systems allows us to study the star-formation history of the Universe by observing high-redshift starburst galaxies. These begin to dominate the radio source populations…
We present high spatial resolution (2.3"x1.9" or 43 pc x 36 pc at D = 3.9 Mpc) 100 GHz millimeter-wave continuum emission observations with the Nobeyama Millimeter Array toward an expanding molecular superbubble in the central region of M82. The 100 GHz continuum image, which is dominated by free-free emission, revealed that the four strongest peaks are concentrated at the inner edge of the superbubble along the galactic disk. The production rates of Lyman continuum photons calculated from 100 GHz continuum flux at these peaks are an order of magnitude higher than those from the most massive s…
