x dependences of Tc in YBa2Cu3O6+x and Y1-b(Ca)bBa2Cu3O6+x (b=0.1 and b=0.2) have been calculated assuming that the net doping of CuO2 layers is a sum of contributions from CuO chains and from substitution of Y3+ by Ca2+. We applied the concept of minimal (critical) chain length lcr needed to trigger charge transfer from chains to planes. The model proposed assumes that only a certain part, say kappa, of those chain-holes that are created beyond the first lcr-2 holes in chains of length l>lcr, are able to attract electrons from CuO2 bilayer. Our analysis points to the conclusion that parameter lcr should be equal to 4 (four oxygen atoms in a chain), or very close to it (3, or 5). Calculated x dependences of doping, p(x), at constant (room) temperature and for three different substitution levels b=0, 0.1, and 0.2, are found to be in excellent agreement with available experimental data. These p(x) dependences are combined with universal (parabolic) phase relation Tc(p) to obtain three Tc(x) dependences that also remarkably correlate with those reported in experiments. The results obtained indicate that in long chains (x=1) the probability for a chain-hole to capture an electron (expressing hole ability to become transferred) decreases with the concentration of 3d Cu electrons in CuO2 layers, ranking from kappa=40%(42%) in YBa2Cu3O6+x, over kappa=36% in Y0.9(Ca)0.1Ba2Cu3O6+x to kappa=33% in Y0.8(Ca)0.2Ba2Cu3O6+x. We estimate that in these three systems the wavelength of charge corrugations in long chains (at x=1) should be ranking around lambda=1.38nm, lambda=1.25nm, lambda=1.20nm, respectively.
We examine the effects of the CuO chains on the density of states in the vortex phase in YBa_2Cu_3O_7, via a calculation based on the tight-binding proximity model. In this model, chain superconductivity results from single-electron hopping between the intrinsically-normal chains and intrinsically-superconducting CuO_2 planes. The calculations are based on self-consistent solutions of the Bogolyubov-de Gennes equations for a bilayer consisting of a single CuO_2 layer and a single CuO chain layer. We find that, in addition to the dispersing resonances found in single-layer models, the chains in…
We use microprobe Angle-Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (muARPES) to separately investigate the electronic properties of CuO2 planes and CuO chains in the high temperature superconductor, YBa2Cu4O8. In the CuO2 planes, a two dimensional (2D) electronic structure with nearly momentum independent bilayer splitting is observed. The splitting energy is 150 meV at (pi,0), almost 50% larger than in Bi2Sr2CaCu2O(8+d) and the electron scattering at the Fermi level in the bonding band is about 1.5 times stronger than in the antibonding band. The CuO chains have a quasi one dimensional (1D) electron…
The Hall coefficient is measured in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ untwinned single crystals for a wide range of doping. We show that the Hall conductivity and the Hall angle of the {\it CuO$_2$ planes} in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ can be extracted from measurable transport properties regardless of the conduction of the Cu-O chains nor the in-plane anisotropy of the CuO$_2$ planes. The present analysis allows us to discuss the genuine Hall effect in the CuO$_2$ planes alone in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ without any complications due to the Cu-O chains.
We have investigated the electronic states in quasi one dimensional (1D) CuO chains by microprobe Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy. We find that the quasiparticle Fermi surface consists of six disconnected segments, consistent with recent theoretical calculations that predict the formation of narrow, elongated Fermi surface pockets for coupled CuO chains. In addition, we find a strong renormalization effect with a significant kink structure in the band dispersion. The properties of this latter effect [energy scale (~40 meV), temperature dependence and behavior with Zn-doping] are iden…
The temperatuer dependence of the magnetic penetration depth of grain aligned YBa2Cu4O8 has been measured along the ab plane and c-axis. Both $λ_ab$ and $λ_c$ vary as \sqrt{T} up to 0.4Tc implying a square root density of states at low energy. The results are discussed in terms of a proximity model of alternating stacked superconducting and normal layers
The dimensionality of a correlated many-body system has a large impact on its electronic properties. When electrons are confined to one-dimensional chains of atoms their behavior is very different than in higher dimensional systems because they become strongly correlated, even in the case of vanishingly small interactions. The chains consisting of copper and oxygen atoms are particularly interesting, because the CuO orbitals are constituents of all known high temperature superconductors. Most of previous spectroscopic studies of CuO chain systems indicated insulating behavior[23-25]. Here we r…
The electron dynamics in the CuO chains has been elusive in Y-Ba-Cu-O cuprate systems by means of standard angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES); cleaved sample exhibits areas terminated by both CuO-chain or BaO layers, and the size of a typical beam results in ARPES signals that are superposed from both terminations. Here, we employ spatially-resolved ARPES with submicrometric beam (nano-ARPES) to reveal the surface-termination-dependent electronic structures of the double CuO chains in YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$. We present the first observation of sharp metallic dispersions and Fermi su…
The Bogoliubov-deGennes equations are solved for a proximity model for YBa_2Cu_3O_{7-δ} in a magnetic field. The model explicitly includes the effects of the one-dimensional CuO chains, whose influence on the vortex core structure is studied. The rapid vortex core contraction as a function of field which is seen experimentally at low magnetic fields is naturally explained by the presence of the chains.
The anisotropy in the microwave conductivity of the ortho-II YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.50}$ is studied within the kinetic energy driven superconducting mechanism. The ortho-II YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.50}$ is characterized by a periodic alternative of filled and empty $\hat{b}$-axis CuO chains. By considering the CuO chain induced extended anisotropy impurity scattering, the main features of the anisotropy in the microwave conductivity of the ortho-II YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.50}$ are reproduced based on the nodal approximation of the quasiparticle excitations and scattering processes, including the intensity an…
Superconductivity has recently been discovered in Pr$_{2}$Ba$_{4}$Cu$_{7}$O$_{15-δ}$ with a maximum $T_c$ of about 15K. Since the CuO planes in this material are believed to be insulating, it has been proposed that the superconductivity occurs in the double (or zigzag) CuO chain layer. On phenomenological grounds, we propose a theoretical interpretation of the experimental results in terms of a new phase for the zigzag chain, labelled by C$_1$S$_{3/2}$. This phase has a gap for some of the relative spin and charge modes but no total spin gap, and can have a divergent superconducting susceptibi…
Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements of CuO chains of detwinned Ortho-II YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.5}$ (YBCO6.5) single crystals reveal unusual and remarkable properties. The chain Cu resonance broadens significantly, but gradually, on cooling from room temperature. The lineshape and its temperature dependence are substantially different from that of a conventional spin/charge density wave (S/CDW) phase transition. Instead, the line broadening is attributed to small amplitude static spin and charge density oscillations with spatially varying amplitudes connected with the ends of the finite l…
We report on magnetisation measurements of Sr14-xCaxCu24O41, with 0 <= x <= 12, in magnetic fields up to 16 T. The low temperature magnetic response of the CuO2 spin chains changes strongly upon doping. For x = 0, the ground state with nearly independent dimers is confirmed. Reduction of the number of holes in the chains through Ca-doping leads to an additional contribution to the magnetisation, which depends linearly on the magnetic field. Remarkably, the slope of this linear contribution increases with the Ca content. We argue that antiferromagnetic spin chains do not account for this behavi…
An intact CuO$_2$ plane is widely believed to be a prerequisite for the high-$T_c$ superconductivity in cuprate superconductors. However, an exception may exist in the superconducting Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$ materials where CuO chains play a more important role. From first-principles density functional theory calculations, we have studied the electronic and magnetic structures of Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$. The stoichiometric Ba$_2$CuO$_3$ and Ba$_2$CuO$_4$ contain quasi-one-dimensional CuO chains and intact two-dimensional CuO$_2$ planes, respectively. In comparison with the nonmagnetic metal Ba$_2$CuO$_4$,…
We use a mapping of the multiband Hubbard model for $CuO_{3}$ chains in $RBa_{2}Cu_{3}0_{6+x}$ (R=Y or a rare earth) onto a $t-J$ model and the description of the charge dynamics of the latter in terms pf s spinless model, to study the electronic structure of the chains. We briefly review results for the optical conductivity and we calculate the quantum phase diagram of quarter filled chains including Coulomb repulsion up to that between next-nearest-neighbor $Cu$ atoms $V_{2}$, using the resulting effective Hamiltonian, mapped onto an XXZ chain, and the method of crossing of excitation spectr…
The metallic state of the underdoped high-Tc cuprates has remained an enigma: How may seemingly disconnected Fermi surface segments, observed in zero magnetic field as a result of the opening of a partial gap (the pseudogap), possess conventional quasiparticle properties? How do the small Fermi-surface pockets evidenced by the observation of quantum oscillations (QO) emerge as superconductivity is suppressed in high magnetic fields? Such QO, discovered in underdoped YBa2Cu3O6.5 (Y123) and YBa2Cu4O8 (Y124), signify the existence of a conventional Fermi surface (FS). However, due to the complexi…
The crystal structure and electrical resistivity of YBa$_2$Cu$_4$O$_8$ (Y124) were studied under high pressure up to 18 GPa using diamond-anvil cells, respectively, in order to clarify its conduction mechanism. Y124 causes the first-order phase-transition into the orthorhombic Immm at pressure around 11 GPa. The high-pressure phase (HPP) also shows the superconductivity, while the manner of temperature dependence of electrical resistance and the pressure dependence of transition temperature, Tc, drastically change above 11 GPa. The CuO$_2$ plane persists in HPP but the CuO double chains collap…
Recently, Matsukawa et al. have discovered a new superconductor Pr_2Ba_4Cu_7O_15-delta in which metallic CuO double chains are responsible for the superconductivity. To investigate the superconductivity, we employ the d-p double chain model where the tight-binding parameters are determined so as to fit the LDA band structure. On the basis of the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory, we obtain the phase diagram including the superconducting phase in the weak coupling limit. We also calculate the Luttinger liquid parameter K_rho as a function of the electron density $n$ by using the Hartree-Fock app…
Using the numerical diagonalization method, we examine the one-dimensional t_1-t_2-J_1-J_2 model (zigzag chain t-J model) which represents an effective model for metallic CuO double chain in the superconductor Pr_2Ba_4Cu_7O_15-δ. Based on the Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid theory, we calculate the Luttinger-liquid parameter K_ρas a function of electron density n. It is found that superconductivity is realized in parameter region corresponding to the experimental result. We show phase diagram of spin gap on the t_2/|t_1|-n plane by analyzing the expectation value of twist-operator Z_σin the spin sec…
Using Monte Carlo techniques, we show that the two--dimensional anisotropic Heisenberg model reproducing nicely inelastic neutron scattering measurements on La_5 Ca_9 Cu_24 O_41 (Matsuda et al. [Phys. Rev. B 68, 060406(R) (2003)]) seems to be insufficient to describe correctly measurements on thermodynamic quantities like the magnetization or the susceptibility. Possible reasons for the discrepancy are suggested.
The microwave conductivity of an ultra-pure single crystal of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6.50}$ has been measured deep in the superconducting state as a continuous function of frequency from $0.5\to20$ GHz. Conductivity spectra were first measured at four temperatures below 10 K after having prepared the crystal in the so called ortho-II phase in which the CuO chain oxygen are ordered into alternating full and empty chains. These spectra exhibit features expected for quasiparticle scattering from dilute weak impurities (small scattering phaseshift) in an otherwise clean d-wave superconductor. The measur…
We present a joint experimental and theoretical study of the electronic structure of the cuprate chain systems A_(1-x)CuO_2 (A=Ca,Sr,Ba), as measured using O-K and Cu-L_3 x-ray absorption spectroscopy. The doping-dependent behaviour in these systems is radically different to that in conventional 2D cuprate networks formed from corner sharing CuO_4 plaquettes, and follows from the strongly suppressed inter-plaquette hybridisation resulting from the 90 degree Cu-O-Cu interaction pathway in the chain systems. Spectroscopically, this results in (a) a classical mixed-valent scenario whereby the dif…
The mechanism of field-effect doping in the "123" high critical temperature superconductors (HTS) has been investigated by x-ray absorption spectroscopy in the presence of an electric field. We demonstrate that holes are created at the CuO chains of the charge reservoir and that field-effect doping of the CuO2 planes occurs by charge transfer, from the chains to the planes, of a fraction of the overall induced holes. The electronic properties of the charge reservoir and of the dielectric/HTS interface determine the electric field doping of the CuO2 planes
We compare the Tcs found in different families of optimally-doped High-Tc cuprates and find, contrary generally accepted lore, that pairing is not exclusively in the CuO2 layers. Evidence for additional pairing interactions, that take place outside the CuO2 layers, is found in two different classes of cuprates, namely the charge reservoir and the chain layer cuprates. The additional pairing in these layers suppresses fluctuations and hence enhances Tc. Tcs higher than 100K, are found in the cuprates containing charge reservoir layers with cations of Tl, Bi, or Hg that are known to be negative-…
Samples of YBa2-xSrxCu3O7-d (x = 0.0, 0.50, 1.0) series were synthesized by solid-state reaction and first annealed in flowing O2 gas. All samples crystallized in orthorhombic structure, where orthorhombic distortion was found to decrease with an increase in x. Four probe resistivity measurements showed that superconducting transition temperature (Tc) decreases monotonically with x at a rate of dTc/dx = 1.3 K/at%. The sample with x=0 had a Tc = 91 K. The samples were further annealed in flowing N2 gas at 450 0C. The Tc of all samples decreased by nitrogen annealing. Interestingly, the decrease…
The oxygen deficient CuO_x planes of the high-Tc superconductors REBa_2Cu_3O_{6+x} (RE denotes a rare-earth atom or yttrium) are studied. Starting from the Emery model for the Cu-O chain fragments, an extended ASYNNNI model is proposed to describe the statistical mechanics of the CuO_x planes. The model is analysed by using Monte Carlo techniques, computing especially the charge transfer to the CuO$_2$ planes regulating the high-Tc superconductivity, and the concentration of differently coordinated Cu ions. Results are compared to experimental data for various RE cases.
The interplay between the quasi 1-dimensional CuO-chains and the 2-dimensional CuO2 planes of YBa2Cu3O6+x (YBCO) has been in focus for a long time. Although the CuO-chains are known to be important as charge reservoirs that enable superconductivity for a range of oxygen doping levels in YBCO, the understanding of the dynamics of its temperature-driven metal-superconductor transition (MST) remains a challenge. We present a combined study using x-ray absorption spectroscopy and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) revealing how a reconstruction of the apical O(4)-derived interplanar orbita…
We have succeeded in growing large-size single-crystals of Ca$_{2+x}$Y$_{2-x}$Cu$_5$O$_{10}$ with $0 \le x \le 1.67$ and measured the magnetic susceptibility, specific heat and magnetization curve, in order to study the magnetic ground state in the edge-sharing CuO$_2$ chain as a function of hole concentration and magnetic field. In $0 \le x \le 1.3$, it has been found that an antiferromagnetically ordered phase with the magnetic easy axis along the b-axis is stabilized and that a spin-flop transition occurs by the application of magnetic fields parallel to the b-axis. The antiferromagnetic tr…
We present an angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy study of YBa2Cu3O7-delta films in situ grown by pulsed laser deposition. We have successfully produced underdoped surfaces with ordered oxygen vacancies within the CuO chains resulting in a clear ortho-II band folding of the Fermi surface. This indicates that order within the CuO chains affects the electronic properties of the CuO2 planes. Our results highlight the importance of having not only the correct surface carrier concentration, but also a very well ordered and clean surface in order that photoemission data on this compound be rep…
We present magneto-transport calculations for YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{7-δ}$ (YBCO) materials to show that the electron-like metallic chain state gives both the negative Hall effect and in-plane anisotropic large Nernst signal. We show that the inevitable presence of the metallic 1D CuO chain layer lying between the CuO2 bilayers in YBCO renders an electron-like Fermi surface in the doping range as wide as p=0.05 to overdoping. With underdoping, a pseudogap opening in the CuO2 state reduces its hole-carrier contribution, and therefore the net electron-like quasiparticles dominate the transport propert…
We have studied the penetration depth for a model of $YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{7}$ involving pairing both in the $CuO_{2}$ planes and in the CuO chains. In this model pairing in the planes is due to an attractive interaction, while Coulomb repulsion induces in the chains an order parameter with opposite sign. Due to the anticrossing produced by hybridization between planes and chains, one obtains a d-wave like order parameter which changes sign on a single sheet of the Fermi surface and has nodes in the gap. We find that our model accounts quite well for the anisotropy of the penetration depth and for …
The spectral properties of a one-dimensional (1D) single-chain Mott insulator Sr$_2$CuO$_{3}$ have been studied in angle-resolved photoemission and optical spectroscopy, at half filling and with small concentrations of extra charge doped into the chains via high oxygen pressure growth. The single- particle gap is reduced with oxygen doping, but the metallic state is not reached. The bandwidth of the charge-transfer band increases with doping, while the state becomes narrower, allowing unambiguous observation of separated spinon and holon branches in the doped system. The optical gap is not cha…
We report direct evidence of charge/orbital ordering of low energy electronic states of $Cu$ in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ ortho-II phase in both the $CuO_3$ chain and the CuO$_2$ plane. Huge enhancement of the $({1/2},0,0)$ superstructure Bragg peak is observed when photon energy is tuned to the $Cu L_{2,3}$ absorption edge with large polarization dependence. The ordering in the $CuO_2$ plane discovered here sheds new light on how the one dimensional $Cu-O$ chains affect the $CuO_2$ plane, and why many normal and superconducting state properties of this system exhibit strong anisotropy.
We argue that the results of recent scanning tunneling microscopy, angle-resolved photoemission and infrared spectroscopy experiments on the CuO chains of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$ are consistently explained within a proximity model by the interplay of a coherent chain-plane and an incoherent interchain coupling. We show that the CuO$_2$ planes act as an ohmic heat bath for the electronic degrees of freedom in the chains which induces a substantial quantum dissipation. Below the planar $T_c$, charge excitations in the chains acquire a universal superconducting gap whose phase and magnitude are mo…
In this paper, an attempt is made to elucidate some aspects of the charge transport in a single CuO_2 plane. During the doping process, the simultaneously introduced oxygen holes as well as the electrons create two components plasma. Whereas the oxygen holes generate a crystal lattice controlled by the repulsive Coulomb force, the conduction electrons having significant momentum components in diagonal directions of the CuO_2 plane are locked in an "electron wave guide" which is the consequence of multiple magnetic scattering on diagonally running chains of Cu atoms with mutually opposite spins…
We report a study of the basal-plane anisotropy of the superfluid density in underdoped YBa$_{2}$Cu$_{4}$O$_{8}$ (Y124), showing the effects of both the CuO$_{2}$ planes and the fully occupied CuO chains. From small-angle neutron scattering measurements of the vortex lattice, we can infer the superconducting (SC) properties for a temperature ($T$) range $T=$ 1.5 K to $T_{\rm c}$ and magnetic induction $B$ from 0.1 to 6 T. We find that the superfluid density along \textbf{a} has a simple $d$-wave T-dependence. However, along \textbf{b} (the chain direction) the superfluid density falls much mor…
We report the magnetotransport and $dc$ magnetic susceptibility of the polycrystalline samples of Pr$_{2}$Ba$_{4}$Cu$_{7}$O$_{15-δ}$, to examine the effect of magnetic field on the superconducting phase of the metallic CuO double chain. The resistive critical magnetic field is estimated to be about 21 T at low temperatures from the resistive transition data. On the other hand, the corresponding critical field determined from the magnetization measurements gives rise to a very low value of $\sim 0.3$T at 2 K. These discrepancies in the magnetic response between the resistivity and magnetization…
A model of charge transfer mechanism from CuO chains to CuO2 planes has been proposed to account for doping of the planes, assuming that only chains containing more than three oxygen atoms can contribute to hole transfer. Only chains with length l greater than 4 are assumed to have transferred a certain fraction, approximately 40%, of the holes created by oxygen atoms added to the chain beyond the first three oxygen atoms. Using the so obtained x dependence of doping, p(x), at constant (room) temperature and utilizing empirical parabolic phase relation Tc(p) (Tc(p)=Tc,max[1-82.6(p(x)-0.16)2], …
First principles investigations of the high temperature superconducting system Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$, recently discovered at $δ\approx0.2$ at $T_c=70$ K, are applied to demonstrate the effects of oxygen ordering on the electronic and magnetic properties. The observed `highly over-doped' superconducting phase displays stretched Cu-planar oxygen O$_{\rm P}$ distances and anomalously shortened Cu-apical O$_{\rm A}$ separations compared with other cuprates. The stoichiometric system $δ=0$, with its strongly one-dimensional (1D) Cu-O$_{\rm P}$ chain structure, when nonmagnetic shows 1D Fermi surfaces t…
Theoretical analysis of the origin of the double-well band dispersion in the CuO double chains of Pr$_2$Ba$_4$Cu$_7$O$_{15-δ}$ and its impact on superconductivity
The electron hole concentration p in the CuO2 planes of YBa2Cu3O6+x (YBCO) has been evaluated using the unit cell length in the c-direction together with a simple estimation for p in the chain oxygen ordered phases. The empirical relationship between p and c obtained allows calculation of p from the c-axis lattice parameter for the entire doping range of YBCO. It is also suggested that the empirical parabola describing the relationship between Tc and p in La2-dSrdCuO4 is reasonably correct for YBCO except for the region around p =1/8, where the Tc of YBCO is suppressed by as much as 17 K. A co…
We study the superconductivity in the three-dimensional multiband d-p model, in which a Cu$_2$O$_3$-ladder layer and a CuO$_2$-chain layer are alternately stacked, as a model of the superconducting spin-chain ladder cuprate. $p_z$-Wave-like triplet superconductivity is found to be the most stable, and its dependence on interlayer coupling can explain the superconducting transition temperature dependence on pressure in real superconducting spin-chain ladder cuprates. The superconductivity may be enhanced if hole transfer from the chain layer to the ladder layer can be promoted beyond the typica…
As established by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) cleaved surfaces of the high temperature superconductor YBa$_2$Cu$_2$O$_{7-δ}$ develop charge density wave (CDW) modulations in the one-dimensional (1D) CuO chains. At the same time, no signatures of the CDW have been reported in the spectral function of the chain band previously studied by photoemission. We use soft X-ray angle resolved photoemission (SX-ARPES) to detect a chain-derived surface band that had not been detected in previous work. The $2k_\textup{F}$ for the new surface band is found to be 0.55\,Å$^{-1}$, which matches the wav…
We investigate the nature of the electronic ground state and electron-lattice couplings for doped chains of CuO_4 plaquettes or CuO_6 octahedra. The undoped configuration implies here Cu 3d^9 and O 2p^6 formal valence states. The results of multiconfiguration calculations on 4-plaquette (or 4-octahedra) linear clusters indicate strong electron-lattice interactions and polaronic behavior of the doped particles, for both electron and hole doping. For certain phases of the oxygen-ion half-breathing distortions a multi-well energy landscape is predicted. Since each well is associated to carriers l…
A model for charge transfer mechanism in YBa2Cu3O6+x high-Tc cuprate based on critical chain length concept is proposed to account for 60K and 90K plateaus in Tc(x) dependence. It has been shown, when the statistics of CuO chain formation was described in terms of two dimensional asymmetric next-to-nearest neighbor Ising (ASYNNNI) model, that at any constant temperature below the top of OII phase there exists a uniquely defined value of critical chain length lcr(T) that yields a constant doping p(x)=const over the regime of OII phase (related to 60K plateau of Tc(x)), while 90K plateau coincid…
We report a study of the pressure effect (PE) on the in-plane magnetic field penetration depth lambda_{ab} in YBa_2Cu_4O_8 by means of Meissner fraction measurements. A pronounced PE on lambda_{ab}^{-2}(0) was observed with a maximum relative shift of Δλ^{-2}_{ab}/λ^{-2}_{ab}= 44(3)% at a pressure of 10.2 kbar. It arises from the pressure dependence of the effective in-plane charge carrier mass and pressure induced charge carrier transfer from the CuO chains to the superconducting CuO_2 planes. The present results imply that the charge carriers in YBa_2Cu_4O_8 are coupled to the lattice.
The recently discovered cuprate superconductor Ba$_2$CuO$_{3+δ}$ exhibits a high $T_c\simeq73$K at $δ\simeq0.2$. The polycrystal grown under high pressure has a structure similar to La$_2$CuO$_4$, but with dramatically different lattice parameters due to the CuO$_6$ octahedron compression. The crystal field in the compressed Ba$_2$CuO$_4$ leads to an inverted Cu $3d$ $e_g$ complex with the $d_{x^2-y^2}$ orbital sitting below the $d_{3z^2-r^2}$ and an electronic structure highly unusual compared to the conventional cuprates. We construct a two-orbital Hubbard model for the Cu $d^9$ state at hol…
The organization of dopants in high temperature superconductors provides complex topological geometries that controls superconducting properties. This makes the study of dopants spatial distribution of fundamental importance. The mobile oxygen ions, y, in the CuO2 plane of YBa2Cu3O6+y (0.33<y<0.67) form ordered chains which greatly affect the transport properties of the material. Here we visualize and characterize the 2D spatial organization of these oxygen chains using scanning micro X-ray diffraction measurements in transmission mode on a thin single crystal slab with y=0.33 (Tc=7 K) near th…
High resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy data along the (0,0)-($π$,$π$) nodal direction with significantly improved statistics reveal fine structure in the electron self-energy of the underdoped (La$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$)CuO$_4$ samples in the normal state. Fine structure at energies of (40$\sim$46) meV and (58$\sim$63)meV, and possible fine structure at energies of (23$\sim$29)meV and (75$\sim$85)meV, have been identified. These observations indicate that, in LSCO, more than one bosonic modes are involved in the coupling with electrons.
An NQR experiment revealed superconductivity of Pr$_2$Ba$_4$Cu$_7$O$_{15-δ}$ (Pr247) to be realized on CuO double chain layers and suggests possibility of novel one-dimensional(1D) superconductivity. To clarify the nature of the 1D superconductivity, we calculate the band dispersions of Pr247 by using the generalized gradient approximation(GGA). It indicates that Fermi surface of CuO double chains is well described to the electronic structure of a quasi-1D system. Assuming the zigzag Hubbard chain model to be an effective model of the system, we derive tight binding parameters of the model fro…
Here we study the effect of Ca doping on charge transfer mechanism of polycrystalline YBa2Cu3O7-δ compound. The samples of composition Y1-xCaxBa2Cu3O7-δ (x = 0.00, 0.05, 0.10, 0.20 and 0.30) are synthesized through standard solid state reaction route. Carrier doping is controlled by annealing of samples in oxygen and subsequently in reducing atmosphere. Samples are investigated using resistivity, dc magnetization (M-T) and magnetization with field (M-H) measurements. With increase of Ca the transition temperature (Tc) decreases in oxygenated samples, whereas the same increases in reduced sampl…
The lattice parameters and Tc of Y1-yCayBa2Cu3Ox have been determined under pressure up to 10 GPa using a diamond anvil cell. The results are used to test the extended charge transfer model that connects the pressure effect on Tc to an intrinsic dTc,max/dp and a pressure induced hole doping dnh/dp, the latter being caused by charge transfer from the CuO chains to the CuO2 planes. dnh/dp and dTc,max/dp are usually assumed to be constant with respect to pressure p. However, our experiments show that the usage of this model gives a poor description of the experimental Tc(p) values. We connected t…
One of the prime manifestations of an anisotropic electronic state in underdoped cuprates is the in-plane resistivity anisotropy $Δρ\equiv(ρ_{a}-ρ_{b})/ρ_{b}$. Here we use a Boltzmann-equation approach to compute the contribution to $Δρ$ arising from scattering by anisotropic charge and spin fluctuations, which have been recently observed experimentally. While the anisotropy in the charge fluctuations is manifested in the correlation length, the anisotropy in the spin fluctuations emerges only in the structure factor. As a result, we find that spin fluctuations favor $Δρ>0$, whereas charge flu…
The importance of charge reservoir layers for supplying holes to the CuO$_2$ planes of cuprate superconductors has long been recognized. Less attention has been paid to the screening of the charge transfer by the intervening ionic layers. We address this issue in the case of YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_{6+x}$, where CuO chains supply the holes for the planes. We present a simple dielectric-screening model that gives a linear correlation between the relative displacements of ions along the $c$ axis, determined by neutron powder diffraction, and the hole density of the planes. Applying this model to the tem…
The cuprates exhibit a prominent charge-density-wave (CDW) instability with wavevector along [100], i.e., the Cu-O bond direction. Whereas CDW order is most prominent at moderate doping and low temperature, there exists increasing evidence for dynamic charge correlations throughout a large portion of the temperature-doping phase diagram. In particular, signatures of incipient charge order have been observed as phonon softening and/or broadening near the CDW wavevector approximately half-way through the Brillouin zone. Most of this work has focused on moderately-doped cuprates, for which the CD…
