It is established by numerical means that the continuum large N principal chiral model in two dimensions has a phase transition in a smoothed two point function at a critical distance of the order of the correlation length.
In this paper, which is the second one in a series of two papers, we shall present two more solutions, non-minimal ones, for the Z_{3} parafermionic chiral algebra with Delta_{psi}=Delta_{psi^{+}}=8/3, psi(z), psi^{+}(z) being the principal parafermionic fields.
We define a two-parameter family of integrable deformations of the principal chiral model on an arbitrary compact group. The Yang-Baxter sigma-model and the principal chiral model with a Wess-Zumino term both correspond to limits in which one of the two parameters vanishes.
Motivated by our previous study of the Twisted Eguchi-Kawai model for non minimal twists, we re-examined the behaviour of the reduced version of the two dimensional principal chiral model. We show that this single matrix model reproduces the same features as the standard lattice model. In particular, scaling towards the continuum limit, the correct value of the internal energy, the magnetic susceptibility and the mass gap. Given our capacity to reach larger values of $N$, we use the reduced model to study the nature and properties of its large $N$ phase transition existing at intermediate coup…
We study the sigma model with $SU(N)\times SU(N)$ symmetry in 1+1 dimensions. The two- and four-particle form factors of the Noether current operators are found, by combining the integrable-bootstrap method with the large-$N$ expansion.
Using the Poisson current algebra of the supersymmetric principal chiral model, we develop the algebraic canonical structure of the model by evaluating the fundamental Poisson bracket of the Lax matrices that fits into the rs matrix formalism of non-ultralocal integrable models. The fundamental Poisson bracket has been used to compute the Poisson bracket algebra of the monodromy matrix that gives the conserved quantities in involution.
We explain the physical role of non-perturbative saddle points of path integrals in theories without instantons, using the example of the asymptotically free two-dimensional principal chiral model (PCM). Standard topological arguments based on homotopy considerations suggest no role for non-perturbative saddles in such theories. However, resurgence theory, which unifies perturbative and non-perturbative physics, predicts the existence of several types of non-perturbative saddles associated with features of the large-order structure of perturbation theory. These points are illustrated in the PC…
If the space of minima of the effective potential of a weakly coupled 2d quantum field theory is not connected, then a mass gap will be nonpertubatively generated. As examples, we consider two sigma models compactified on a small circle with twisted boundary conditions. In the compactified SO(3) model the vacuum manifold consists of two points and the mass gap is nonperturbative. In the case of the compactified SU(2) principal chiral model the vacuum manifold is a single circle and the mass gap is perturbative.
A large class of integrable deformations of the Principal Chiral Model, known as the Yang-Baxter deformations, are governed by skew-symmetric R-matrices solving the (modified) classical Yang-Baxter equation. We carry out a systematic investigation of these deformations in the presence of the Wess-Zumino term for simple Lie groups, working in a framework that treats both inhomogeneous and homogeneous deformations on the same footing. After analysing the cohomological conditions under which such a deformation is admissible, we consider an action for the general Yang-Baxter deformation of the Pri…
Typically, the exact ground state energy of integrable models at finite volume can be computed using two main methods: the thermodynamic Bethe ansatz approach and the lattice discretization technique. For quantum sigma models (with non-ultra local Poisson structures) the bridge between these two approaches has only been done through numerical methods. We briefly review these two techniques on the example of the SU(2) principal chiral field model and derive a single integral equation based on the Faddeev-Reshetikhin discretization of the model. We show that this integral equation is equivalent …
We analyze, and prove, the associativity of the new Z_{3} parafermionic chiral algebra which has been announced some time ago, with principal parafermionic fields having the conformal dimension Δ_ψ=8/3. In doing so we have developed a new method for analyzing the associativity of a given chiral algebra of parafermionic type, the method which might be of a more general significance than a particular conformal field theory studied in detail in this paper. Still, even in the context of our particular chiral algebra, of Z_{3} parafermions with Δ_ψ=8/3, the new method allowed us to give a proof of …
We study $η$-deformations of principal chiral model (PCM) from the viewpoint of a 4D Chern-Simons (CS) theory. The $η$-deformed PCM has originally been derived from the 4D CS theory by Delduc, Lacroix, Magro and Vicedo [arXiv:1909.13824]. The derivation is based on a twist function in the rational description. On the other hand, we start with a twist function in the trigonometric description and discuss possible boundary conditions. We show that a certain boundary condition reproduces the usual $η$-deformed PCM and another one leads to a new kind of Yang-Baxter deformation.
We present a finite set of equations for twisted PCF model. At the special twist in the root of unity we demonstrate that the vacuum energy is exactly zero at any size L. Also in SU(2) case we numerically calculate the energy of the single particle state with zero rapidity, as a function of L.
We obtain exact matrix elements of physical operators of the (1+1)-dimensional nonlinear sigma model of an SU(N)-valued bare field, in the 't Hooft limit N goes to infinity. Specifically, all the form factors of the Noether current and the stress-energy-momentum tensor are found with an integrable bootstrap method. These form factors are used to find vacuum expectation values of products of these operators.
Perturbative expansions in many physical systems yield 'only' asymptotic series which are not even Borel resummable. Interestingly, the corresponding ambiguities point to nonperturbative physics. We numerically verify this renormalon mechanism for the first time in two-dimensional sigma models, that, like four-dimensional gauge theories, are asymptotically free and generate a strong scale through dimensional transmutation. We perturbatively expand the energy through a numerical version of stochastic quantization. In contrast to the first energy coefficients, the high order coefficients are ind…
A multi-parameter integrable deformation of the principal chiral model is presented. The Yang-Baxter and bi-Yang-Baxter sigma-models, the principal chiral model plus a Wess-Zumino term and the TsT transformation of the principal chiral model are all recovered when the appropriate deformation parameters vanish. When the Lie group is SU(2), we show that this four-parameter integrable deformation of the SU(2) principal chiral model corresponds to the Lukyanov model.
It is commonly asserted that there is a \hat G\times G centreless Kac-Moody extension of the manifest G\times G global symmetry of the two-dimensional principal chiral model (PCM) for the group manifold G. Here, we show that the symmetry is in fact larger, namely \hat G\times \hat G, the full centreless Kac-Moody extension of the entire manifest G\times G global symmetry. Extending previous results in the literature, we also obtain an explicit realisation of the Virasoro-like symmetry of the PCM, generated by K_n=L_{n+1} - L_{n-1} for both positive and negative n. We show that these generators…
Recently, Kazakov, Gromov and Vieira applied the discrete Hirota dynamics to study the finite size spectra of integrable two dimensional quantum field theories. The method has been tested from large values of the size L down to moderate values using the SU(2) x SU(2) principal chiral model as a theoretical laboratory. We continue the numerical analysis of the proposed non-linear integral equations showing that the deep ultraviolet region L -> 0 is numerically accessible. To this aim, we introduce a relaxed iterative algorithm for the numerical computation of the low-lying part of the spectrum …
We discuss noncollinear magnetic phenomena whose local order parameter is characterized by more than one spin vector. By focusing on the simple cases of 2D triangular and 3D pyrochlore lattices, we demonstrate that their low-energy theories can be described by a one-parametric class of sigma models continuously interpolating between the classical Heisenberg model and the principal chiral model ${\rm Tr} \,\left( \partial_a U \partial_a U^\dagger\right)$ for all $U\in \text{SU}(2)$. The target space can be viewed as a U$(1)$ fibration over the $CP(1)$ space. The 3D version of our model is furth…
We initiate a systematic, non-perturbative study of the large-$N$ expansion in the two-dimensional $\text{SU}(N)\times \text{SU}(N)$ Principal Chiral Model (PCM). Starting with the known infinite-$N$ solution for the ground state at fixed chemical potential \cite{Fateev:1994dp,Fateev:1994ai}, we devise an iterative procedure to solve the Bethe ansatz equations order by order in $1/N$. The first few orders, which we explicitly compute, reveal a systematic enhancement pattern at strong coupling calling for the near-threshold resummation of the large-$N$ expansion. The resulting double-scaling li…
In this letter we explore different representations of the SU(2) principal chiral model on the lattice. We couple chemical potentials to two of the conserved charges to induce finite density. This leads to a complex action such that the conventional field representation cannot be used for a Monte Carlo simulation. Using the recently developed Abelian color flux approach we derive a new worldline representation where the partition sum has only real and positive weights, such that a Monte Carlo simulation is possible. In a second step we transform the model to new dual variables in the Kramers-W…
The properties of (N X N)-matrix-valued-field theories, in the limit N goes to infinity, are harder to obtain than those for isovector-valued field theories. This is because we know less about the sum of planar diagrams than the sum of bubble/linear diagrams. Combining the 1/N-expansion with the axioms for form factors, exact form factors can be found for the integrable field theory of an SU(N)-valued field in 1+1 dimensions. These form factors can be used to find the vacuum expectation value of the product of two field operators. We briefly mention how the results can be applied to 2+1 dimens…
