In this paper we present a decision procedure for computing pFq hypergeometric solutions for third order linear ODEs, that is, solutions for the classes of hypergeometric equations constructed from the 3F2, 2F2, 1F2 and 0F2 standard equations using transformations of the form {x -> F(x), y -> P(x) y}, where F(x) is rational in x and P(x) is arbitrary. A computer algebra implementation of this work is present in Maple 12.
We compute the characteristic Cartan connection associated with a system of third order ODEs. Our connection is different from Tanaka normal one, but still is uniquely associated with the system of third order ODEs. This allows us to find all fundamental invariants of a system of third order ODEs and, in particular, determine when a system of third order ODEs is trivializable. As application differential invariants of equations on circles in ${\mathbb R}^n$ are computed.
We develop a $D-$module approach to various kinds of solutions to several classes of important differential equations by long divisions of different differential operators. The zeros of remainder maps of such long divisions are handled by an analogue of Hensel's lemma established recently from valuation theory. In particular, this explains the common origin of some classically known special function series solutions of Heun equations and usual Frobenius series solutions. Moreover, these remainder maps also generate eigenvalue problems that lead to non-trivial factorizations of certain generali…
Meleshko presented a new method for reducing third order autonomous ordinary differential equations (ODEs) to Lie linearizable second order ODEs. We extended his work by reducing fourth order autonomous ODEs to second and third order linearizable ODEs and then applying the Ibragimov and Meleshko linearization test for the obtained ODEs. The application of the algorithm to several ODEs is also presented.
Whereas Lie had linearized scalar second order ordinary differential equations (ODEs) by point transformations and later Chern had extended to the third order by using contact transformation, till recently no work had been done for higher order or systems of ODEs. Lie had found a unique class defined by the number of infinitesimal symmetry generators but the more general ODEs were not so classified. Recently classifications of higher order and systems of ODEs were provided. In this paper we relate contact symmetries of scalar ODEs with point symmetries of reduced systems. We define new type of…
Using geometric methods for linearizing systems of second order cubically semi-linear ordinary differential equations, we extend to the third order by differentiating the second order equation. This yields criteria for linearizability of a class of third order semi-linear ordinary differential equations, which is distinct from the classes available in the literature. Some examples are given and discussed.
The Cartan equivalence method is utilized to deduce an invariant characterization of the scalar third-order ordinary differential equation $u'"=f(x,u,u',u")$ which admits the maximal seven-dimensional point symmetry Lie algebra. The method provides auxiliary functions which can be used to efficiently obtain the point transformation that does the reduction to the simplest linear equation $\bar{u}'"=0$. Moreover, examples are given to illustrate the method.
The classical problem of computing a complete system of Stokes multipliers of a linear system of ODEs of rank one in terms of some connection coefficients of an associated hypergeometric system of ODEs, is solved with no genericness assumptions on the residue matrix at zero, by an extension of the method of [3].
The Cartan equivalence method is applied to provide an invariant characterization of the third-order ordinary differential equation $u'''=f(x,u,u',u'')$ which admits a five-dimensional point symmetry Lie algebra. The invariant characterization is given in terms of the function $f$ in a compact form. A simple procedure to construct the equivalent canonical form by use of an obtained constant invariant is also presented. We also show how one obtains the point transformation that does the reduction to linear form. Moreover, some applications are provided.
We provide linearizability criteria for a class of systems of third-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs) that is cubically semi-linear in the first derivative, by differentiating a system of second-order quadratically semi-linear ODEs and using the original system to replace the second derivative. The procedure developed splits into two cases, those where the coefficients are constant and those where they are variables. Both cases are discussed and examples given.
We prove a duality relation for generalized basic hypergeometric functions. It forms a $q$-extension of a recent result of the second and the third named authors and generalizes both a $q$-hypergeometric identity due to the third named author (jointly with Feng and Yang) and a recent identity for the Heine's ${}_2ϕ_{1}$ function due to Suzuki. We further explore various consequences of our identity leading to several presumably new multi-term relations for both terminating and non-terminating generalized basic hypergeometric series. Moreover, we give confluent versions of our results and furni…
We take a third-order approach to the fourth Painlevé equation and indicate the value of such an approach to other second-order ODEs in the Painlevé-Gambier list of 50.
When studying boundary value problems for some partial differential equations arising in applied mathematics, we often have to study the solution of a system of partial differential equations satisfied by hypergeometric functions and find explicit linearly independent solutions for the system. In this study, we construct self-similar solutions of some model degenerate partial differential equations of the second, third, and fourth order. These self-similar solutions are expressed in terms of hypergeometric functions.
This is the third revision. We study bases of Pfaffian systems for $A$-hypergeometric system. Gröbner deformations give bases. These bases also give those for twisted cohomology groups. For hypergeometric system associated to a class of order polytopes, these bases have a combinatorial description. The size of the bases associated to a subclass of the order polytopes have the growth rate of the polynomial order. Bases associated to two chain posets and bouquets are studied.
We perform the analytic continuation of solutions to the hypergeometric differential equation of order $n$ to the third regular singularity, usually denoted $z=1$, with the help of recurrences of their Mellin--Barnes integral representations. In the resonant case, there are necessarily logarithmic solutions. We apply the result to Picard-Fuchs equations of certain one--parameter families of Calabi--Yau manifolds, known as the mirror quartic and the mirror quintic.
It is known for scalar ordinary differential equations, and for systems of ordinary differential equations of order not higher than the third, that their Lie point symmetry algebras is of maximal dimension if and only if they can be reduced by a point transformation to the trivial equation $\mathbf{y}^{(n)}$=0. For arbitrary systems of ordinary differential equations of order $n \geq 3$ reducible by point transformations to the trivial equation, we determine the complete structure of their Lie point symmetry algebras as well as that for their variational, and their divergence symmetry algebras…
We study four problems in the dynamics of a body moving about a fixed point, providing a non-complex, analytical solution for all of them. For the first two, we will work on the motion first integrals. For the symmetrical heavy body, that is the Lagrange-Poisson case, we compute the second and third Euler angles in explicit and real forms by means of multiple hypergeometric functions (Lauricella, functions). Releasing the weight load but adding the complication of the asymmetry, by means of elliptic integrals of third kind, we provide the precession angle completing some previous treatments of…
A characterization of the symmetry algebra of the $n$th order ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with maximal symmetry and all third order linearizable ODEs is given. This is used to show that such an algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ determines $-$ up to a point transformation $-$ only one linear equation whose symmetry algebra is $\mathfrak{g}$ and an algorithmic procedure is given to find the linearizing coordinates. The procedure is illustrated by several examples from literature.
A new set of multiple orthogonal polynomials of both type I and type II with respect to two weight functions involving Gauss' hypergeometric function on the interval $(0,1)$ is studied. This type of polynomials have direct applications in the investigation of singular values of products of Ginibre matrices, in the analysis of rational solutions to Painlevé equations and are connected with branched continued fractions and total positivity problems in combinatorics. The pair of orthogonality measures is shown to be a Nikishin system and to satisfy a matrix Pearson-type differential equation. The…
We introduce a general third order non-linear autonomous ODE which covers many ODEs coming from boundary layer problems, like the Falkner-Skan equation and the Cheng-Minkowycz equation. Using Wiman-Valiron theory and complex analytic methods recently developed, for the generic cases, it is shown that all their meromorphic solutions must be rational, or rational in one exponential, and then we find all of them explicitly. For a few non-generic cases, some solutions, which are meromorphic or singlevalued, are also obtained. Our results also explain why it is so difficult to obtain new closed-for…
Several expansions of the solutions of the double-confluent Heun equation in terms of the Kummer confluent hypergeometric functions are presented. Three different sets of these functions are examined. Discussing the expansions without a pre-factor, it is shown that two of these functions provide expansions the coefficients of which obey three-term recurrence relations, while for the third confluent hypergeometric function the corresponding recurrence relation generally involves five-terms. The latter relation is reduced to a three-term one only in the case when the double-confluent Heun equati…
Bagderina \cite{Bagderina2008} solved the equivalence problem for scalar third-order ordinary differential equations (ODEs), quadratic in the second-order derivative, via point transformations. However, the question is open for the general class $y'''=f(x,y,y',y'')$ which is not quadratic in the second-order derivative. We utilize Lie's infinitesimal method to study the differential invariants of this general class under pseudo-group of fiber preserving equivalence transformations $\bar{x}=ϕ(x), \bar{y}=ψ(x,y)$. As a result, all third-order differential invariants of this group and the invaria…
We study second order and third order linear differential equations with analytic coefficients under the viewpoint of finding formal solutions and studying their convergence. We address some untouched aspects of Frobenius methods for second order as the convergence of formal solutions and the existence of Liouvillian solutions. A characterization of regular singularities is given in terms of the space of solutions. An analytic classification of such linear homogeneous ODEs is obtained. This is done by associating to such an ODE a Riccati differential equation and therefore a global holonomy gr…
The linearization problem by use of the Cartan equivalence method for scalar third-order ODEs via point transformations was solved partially in [1,2]. In order to solve this problem completely, the Cartan equivalence method is applied to provide an invariant characterization of the linearizable third-order ordinary differential equation u'''=f(x,u,u',u'') which admits a four-dimensional point symmetry Lie algebra. The invariant characterization is given in terms of the function f in a compact form. A simple procedure to construct the equivalent canonical form by use of an obtained invariant is…
We consider a family of genus 2 hyperelliptic curves of even order and obtain explicitly the system of 5 linear ODEs for periods of the corresponding Abelian integrals of first, second, and third kind, as functions of the parameters of the curves. The system is an extention of the well studied Picard--Fuchs equations for periods of complete integrals of first and second kind on odd hyperelliptic curves. The periods we consider are linear combinations of the action variables of several integrable systems, in particular the generalized Neumann system with polynomial separable potentials. Thus th…
By means of classical fixed point index, we prove new results on the existence, non-existence, localization and multiplicity of nontrivial solutions for systems of Hammerstein integral equations where the nonlinearities are allowed to depend on the first derivative. As a byproduct of our theory we discuss the existence of positive solutions of a system of third order ODEs subject to nonlocal boundary conditions. Some examples are provided in order to illustrate the applicability of the theoretical results.
This article is the third in a series the aim of which is to use Lie group theory to obtain exact analytic solutions of Delay Ordinary Differential Systems (DODSs). Such a system consists of two equations involving one independent variable $x$ and one dependent variable $y$. As opposed to ODEs the variable $x$ figures in more than one point (we consider the case of two points, $x$ and $x_-$). The dependent variable $y$ and its derivatives figure in both $x$ and $x_-$. Two previous articles were devoted to {\it first}-order DODSs, here we concentrate on a large class of {\it second}-order ones.…
In this paper we shall use the algebraic method known as supersymmetric quantum mechanics (SUSY QM) to obtain solutions to the Painlevé V (PV) equation, a second-order non-linear ordinary differential equation. For this purpose, we will apply first the SUSY QM treatment to the radial oscillator. In addition, we will revisit the polynomial Heisenberg algebras (PHAs) and we will study the general systems ruled by them: for first-order PHAs we obtain the radial oscillator, while for third-order PHAs the potential will be determined by solutions to the PV equation. This connection allows us to int…
The squared singular values of the product of $M$ complex Ginibre matrices form a biorthogonal ensemble, and thus their distribution is fully determined by a correlation kernel. The kernel permits a hard edge scaling to a form specified in terms of certain Meijer G-functions, or equivalently hypergeometric functions ${}_0 F_M$, also referred to as hyper-Bessel functions. In the case $M=1$ it is well known that the corresponding gap probability for no squared singular values in $(0,s)$ can be evaluated in terms of a solution of a particular sigma form of the Painlevé III' system. One approach t…
For a given polynomial $P$ with simple zeros, and a given semiclassical weight $w$, we present a construction that yields a linear second-order differential equation (ODE), and in consequence, an electrostatic model for zeros of $P$. The coefficients of this ODE are written in terms of a dual polynomial that we call the electrostatic partner of $P$. This construction is absolutely general and can be carried out for any polynomial with simple zeros and any semiclassical weight on the complex plane. An additional assumption of quasi-orthogonality of $P$ with respect to $w$ allows us to give more…
