It is known for scalar ordinary differential equations, and for systems of ordinary differential equations of order not higher than the third, that their Lie point symmetry algebras is of maximal dimension if and only if they can be reduced by a point transformation to the trivial equation $\mathbf{y}^{(n)}$=0. For arbitrary systems of ordinary differential equations of order $n \geq 3$ reducible by point transformations to the trivial equation, we determine the complete structure of their Lie point symmetry algebras as well as that for their variational, and their divergence symmetry algebras. As a corollary, we obtain the maximal dimension of the Lie point symmetry algebra for any system of linear or nonlinear ordinary differential equations.
Variational and divergence symmetries are studied in this paper for linear equations of maximal symmetry in canonical form, and the associated first integrals are given in explicit form. All the main results obtained are formulated as theorems or conjectures for equations of a general order. Some of these results apply to linear equations of a general form and of arbitrary orders or having a symmetry algebra of arbitrary dimension.
The Cartan equivalence method is utilized to deduce an invariant characterization of the scalar third-order ordinary differential equation $u'"=f(x,u,u',u")$ which admits the maximal seven-dimensional point symmetry Lie algebra. The method provides auxiliary functions which can be used to efficiently obtain the point transformation that does the reduction to the simplest linear equation $\bar{u}'"=0$. Moreover, examples are given to illustrate the method.
In this paper, we study the growth, in terms of the Nevanlinna characteristic function, of meromorphic solutions of three types of second order nonlinear algebraic ordinary differential equations. We give all their meromorphic solutions explicitly, and hence show that all of these ODEs satisfy the {\it classical conjecture} proposed by Hayman in 1996.
Here, we study the genesis and evolution of geometric ideas and techniques in investigations of movable singularities of algebraic ordinary differential equations. This leads us to the work of Mihailo Petrovic on algebraic differential equations and in particular his geometric ideas captured in his polygon method from the last years of the XIXth century, which have been left completely unnoticed by the experts. This concept, also developed in a bit a different direction and independently by Henry Fine, generalizes the famous Newton-Puiseux polygonal method and applies to algebraic ODEs rather …
A generalization of the reduction technique for ODEs recently introduced by Gao and Liu is given. It is shown that the use of algebraic methods allows the extension of the procedure to much more general flows, as well as the derivation of simple criteria for the identification of reducible systems.
We show that the local equivalence problem for second-order ordinary differential equations under point transformations is completely characterized by differential invariants of order at most 10 and that this upper bound is sharp. We also show that, modulo Cartan duality and point transformations, the Painlevé-I equation can be characterized as the simplest second-order ODE belonging to the class of equations requiring 10th order jets for their classification.
It is sometimes desirable to produce for a nonlinear system of ODEs a new representation of simpler structural form, but it is well known that this goal may imply an increase in the dimension of the system. This is what happens if in this new representation the vector field has a lower degree of nonlinearity or a smaller number of nonlinear contributions. Until now both issues have been treated separately, rather unsystematically and, in some cases, at the expense of an excessive increase in the number of dimensions. We unify here the treatment of both issues in a common algebraic framework. T…
We study the set of T-periodic solutions of a class of T-periodically perturbed Differential-Algebraic Equations with separated variables. Under suitable hypotheses, these equations are equivalent to separated variables ODEs on a manifold. By combining known results on Differential-Algebraic Equations, with an argument about ODEs on manifolds, we obtain a global continuation result for the T-periodic solutions to the considered equations. As an application of our method, a multiplicity result is provided.
In this paper, we provide a systematic methodology for calculating multi-order asymptotic expansion of blow-up solutions near blow-up for autonomous ordinary differential equations (ODEs). Under the specific form of the principal term of blow-up solutions for a class of vector fields, we extract algebraic objects determining all possible orders in the asymptotic expansions. Examples for calculating concrete multi-order asymptotic expansions of blow-up solutions are finally collected.
We apply topological methods to obtain global continuation results for harmonic solutions of some periodically perturbed ordinary differential equations on a $k$-dimensional differentiable manifold $M \subseteq \mathbb{R}^m$. We assume that $M$ is globally defined as the zero set of a smooth map and, as a first step, we determine a formula which reduces the computation of the degree of a tangent vector field on $M$ to the Brouwer degree of a suitable map in $\mathbb{R}^m$. As further applications, we study the set of harmonic solutions to periodic semi-esplicit differential-algebraic equations…
We propose a sufficient condition of the convergence of a Dulac series formally satisfying an algebraic ordinary differential equation (ODE). Such formal solutions of algebraic ODEs appear rather often, in particular, the third, fifth, and sixth Painlevé equations possess formal Dulac series solutions, whose convergence follows from the proposed sufficient condition.
A characterization of the symmetry algebra of the $n$th order ordinary differential equations (ODEs) with maximal symmetry and all third order linearizable ODEs is given. This is used to show that such an algebra $\mathfrak{g}$ determines $-$ up to a point transformation $-$ only one linear equation whose symmetry algebra is $\mathfrak{g}$ and an algorithmic procedure is given to find the linearizing coordinates. The procedure is illustrated by several examples from literature.
Quaternion-valued differential equations (QDEs) is a new kind of differential equations which have many applications in physics and life sciences. The largest difference between QDEs and ODEs is the algebraic structure. On the non-commutativity of the quaternion algebra, the algebraic structure of the solutions to the QDEs is completely different from ODEs. It is actually a left- or right- free module, not a linear vector space. This paper establishes a systematic frame work for the theory of linear QDEs, which can be applied to quantum mechanics, fluid mechanics, Frenet frame in differential …
In 1997, Thomas Wolff proved sharp $L^3$ bounds for his circular maximal function, and in 1999, Kolasa and Wolff proved certain non-sharp $L^p$ inequalities for a broader class of maximal functions arising from curves of the form $\{Φ(x,\cdot)=r\}$, where $Φ(x,y)$ satisfied Sogge's cinematic curvature condition. Under the additional hypothesis that $Φ$ is algebraic, we obtain a sharp $L^3$ bound on the corresponding maximal function. Since the function $Φ(x,y)=|x-y|$ is algebraic and satisfies the cinematic curvature condition, our result generalizes Wolff's $L^3$ bound. The algebraicity condi…
The article is based on the differential properties of the inner generators (singularities) that occur while handling SP series (sum product series), power series whose Taylor coefficients can be written as sum-product combinations. It is an elaboration with numerical details and some explicit calculations of the chapter 6 of the joint article with Ecalle on these series. For all polynomial inputs $f$ and all monomial inputs $F$, the inner generators corresponding to them verify ordinary differential equations of linear homogeneous type with polynomial coefficients. Numerical results strongly …
It is known, due to Mordukhai-Boltovski, Ritt, Prelle, Singer, Christopher and others, that if a given rational ODE has a Liouvillian first integral then the corresponding integrating factor of the ODE must be of a very special form of a product of powers and exponents of irreducible polynomials. These results lead to a partial algorithm for finding Liouvillian first integrals. However, there are two main complications on the way to obtaining polynomials in the integrating factor form. First of all, one has to find an upper bound for the degrees of the polynomials in the product above, an unso…
The Noether-like operators that play an essential role in writing down the invariants for systems of two ordinary differential equations (ODEs) are constructed. The classification of such operators is carried out with the help of analytic continuation of the Lagrangians on the line. Cases in which the Noether-like operators are also Noether symmetries for the systems of ODEs are briefly mentioned. In particular, the 8-dimensional maximal Noether subalgebra is remarkabely obtained for the simplest system of the free particle equations in two dimensions from the 5-dimensional complex Noether alg…
