We pursue the development and application of the recently-introduced linear optimization method for determining the optimal linear and nonlinear parameters of Jastrow-Slater wave functions in a variational Monte Carlo framework. In this approach, the optimal parameters are found iteratively by diagonalizing the Hamiltonian matrix in the space spanned by the wave function and its first-order derivatives, making use of a strong zero-variance principle. We extend the method to optimize the exponents of the basis functions, simultaneously with all the other parameters, namely the Jastrow, configuration state function and orbital parameters. We show that the linear optimization method can be thought of as a so-called augmented Hessian approach, which helps explain the robustness of the method and permits us to extend it to minimize a linear combination of the energy and the energy variance. We apply the linear optimization method to obtain the complete ground-state potential energy curve of the C_2 molecule up to the dissociation limit, and discuss size consistency and broken spin-symmetry issues in quantum Monte Carlo calculations. We perform calculations of the first-row atoms and homonuclear diatomic molecules with fully optimized Jastrow-Slater wave functions, and we demonstrate that molecular well depths can be obtained with near chemical accuracy quite systematically at the diffusion Monte Carlo level for these systems.
Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) methods such as variational Monte Carlo and fixed node diffusion Monte Carlo depend heavily on the quality of the trial wave function. Although Slater-Jastrow wave functions are the most commonly used variational ansatz in electronic structure, more sophisticated wave-functions are critical to ascertaining new physics. One such wave function is the multiSlater-Jastrow wave function which consists of a Jastrow function multiplied by the sum of Slater determinants. In this paper we describe a method for working with these wavefunctions in QMC codes that is easy to imple…
We employ quantum Monte Carlo to obtain chemically accurate vertical and adiabatic excitation energies, and equilibrium excited-state structures for the small, yet challenging, formaldehyde and thioformaldehyde molecules. A key ingredient is a robust protocol to obtain balanced ground- and excited-state Jastrow-Slater wave functions at a given geometry, and to maintain such a balanced description as we relax the structure in the excited state. We use determinantal components generated via a selected configuration interaction scheme which targets the same second-order perturbation energy correc…
We explore the use in quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) of trial wave functions consisting of a Jastrow factor multiplied by a truncated configuration-interaction (CI) expansion in Slater determinants obtained from a CI perturbatively selected iteratively (CIPSI) calculation. In the CIPSI algorithm, the CI expansion is iteratively enlarged by selecting the best determinants using perturbation theory, which provides an optimal and automatic way of constructing truncated CI expansions approaching the full CI limit. We perform a systematic study of variational Monte Carlo (VMC) and fixed-node diffusion M…

Variational quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) is an ab-initio method for solving the electronic Schrödinger equation that is exact in principle, but limited by the flexibility of the available ansatzes in practice. The recently introduced deep QMC approach, specifically two deep-neural-network ansatzes PauliNet and FermiNet, allows variational QMC to reach the accuracy of diffusion QMC, but little is understood about the convergence behavior of such ansatzes. Here, we analyze how deep variational QMC approaches the fixed-node limit with increasing network size. First, we demonstrate that a deep neural…
We present the extension of variational Monte Carlo (VMC) to the calculation of electronic excitation energies and oscillator strengths using time-dependent linear-response theory. By exploiting the analogy existing between the linear method for wave-function optimisation and the generalised eigenvalue equation of linear-response theory, we formulate the equations of linear-response VMC (LR-VMC). This LR-VMC approach involves the first-and second-order derivatives of the wave function with respect to the parameters. We perform first tests of the LR-VMC method within the Tamm-Dancoff approximat…
TurboRVB is a computational package for {\it ab initio} Quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations of both molecular and bulk electronic systems. The code implements two types of well established QMC algorithms: Variational Monte Carlo (VMC), and Diffusion Monte Carlo in its robust and efficient lattice regularized variant. A key feature of the code is the possibility of using strongly correlated many-body wave functions. The electronic wave function (WF) is obtained by applying a Jastrow factor, which takes into account dynamical correlations, to the most general mean-field ground state, written e…
We investigate how the fixed-node diffusion Monte Carlo energy of solids depends on single-particle orbitals used in Slater--Jastrow wave functions. We demonstrate that the dependence can be significant, in particular in the case of 3d transition-metal compounds, which we adopt as examples. We illustrate how exchange-correlation functionals with variable exact-exchange component can be exploited to reduce the fixed-node errors. On the basis of these results we argue that the fixed-node quantum Monte Carlo provides a variational approach for optimization of effective hamiltonians with parameter…
The parameter derivative of the expectation value of the energy, $\partial E/\partial p$, is a key ingredient in variational quantum Monte Carlo (VMC) wave function optimization methods. In some cases, a naïve Monte Carlo estimate of this derivative suffers from an infinite variance which inhibits the efficiency of optimization methods that rely on a stable estimate of the derivative. In this work, we derive a simple regularization of the naïve estimator which is trivial to implement in existing VMC codes, has finite variance, and a negligible bias which can be extrapolated to zero bias with n…
We present and motivate an efficient way to include orbital dependent many--body correlations in trial wave function of real--space Quantum Monte Carlo methods for use in electronic structure calculations. We apply our new orbital--dependent backflow wave function to calculate ground state energies of the first row atoms using variational and diffusion Monte Carlo methods. The systematic overall gain of correlation energy with respect to single determinant Jastrow-Slater wave functions is competitive with the best single determinant trial wave functions currently available. The computational c…
Computation of ionic forces using quantum Monte Carlo methods has long been a challenge. We introduce a simple procedure, based on known properties of physical electronic densities, to make the variance of the Hellmann-Feynman estimator finite. We obtain very accurate geometries for the molecules H$_2$, LiH, CH$_4$, NH$_3$, H$_2$O and HF, with a Slater-Jastrow trial wave function. Harmonic frequencies for diatomics are also in good agreement with experiment. An antithetical sampling method is also discussed for additional reduction of the variance.
We report state-of-the-art quantum Monte Carlo calculations of the singlet $n \to π^*$ (CO) vertical excitation energy in the acrolein molecule, extending the recent study of Bouabça {\it et al.} [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 130}, 114107 (2009)]. We investigate the effect of using a Slater basis set instead of a Gaussian basis set, and of using state-average versus state-specific complete-active-space (CAS) wave functions, with or without reoptimization of the coefficients of the configuration state functions (CSFs) and of the orbitals in variational Monte Carlo (VMC). It is found that, with the Slate…
We construct improved quantum Monte Carlo estimators for the spherically- and system-averaged electron pair density (i.e. the probability density of finding two electrons separated by a relative distance u), also known as the spherically-averaged electron position intracule density I(u), using the general zero-variance zero-bias principle for observables, introduced by Assaraf and Caffarel. The calculation of I(u) is made vastly more efficient by replacing the average of the local delta-function operator by the average of a smooth non-local operator that has several orders of magnitude smaller…
We propose to compute physical properties by Monte Carlo calculations using conditional expectation values. The latter are obtained on top of the usual Monte Carlo sampling by partitioning the physical space in several subspaces or fragments, and subsampling each fragment (i.e., performing side walks) while freezing the environment. No bias is introduced and a zero-variance principle holds in the limit of separability, i.e. when the fragments are independent. In practice, the usual bottleneck of Monte Carlo calculations -- the scaling of the statistical fluctuations as a function of the number…
We computed the Compton profile of solid and liquid lithium using quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) and compared with recent experimental measurements obtaining good agreement. Importantly, we find it crucial to account for proper core-valence orthogonalization and to address density differences when comparing with experiment. To account for disorder effects, we sampled finite-temperature configurations using molecular dynamics (MD), then performed diffusion Monte Carlo (DMC) simulations on each configuration. We used Slater-Jastrow wavefunctions and grand-canonical twist-averaged boundary conditions.…

We revisit here the lowest vertical excitations of cyanine dyes using quantum Monte Carlo and leverage on recent developments to systematically improve on previous results. In particular, we employ a protocol for the construction of compact and accurate multi-determinant Jastrow-Slater wave functions for multiple states, which we have recently validated on the excited-state properties of several small prototypical molecules. Here, we obtain quantum Monte Carlo excitation energies in excellent agreement with high-level coupled cluster for all the cyanines where the coupled cluster method is app…
Layered material $α$-RuCl$_3$ has caught wide attention due to its possible realization of Kitaev's spin liquid and its electronic structure that involves the interplay of electron-electron correlations and spin-orbit effects. Several DFT$+U$ studies have suggested that both electron-electron correlations and spin-orbit effects are crucial for accurately describing the band gap. This work studies the importance of these two effects using fixed-node and fixed-phase diffusion Monte Carlo calculations both in spin-averaged and explicit spin-orbit formalisms. In the latter, the Slater-Jastrow tria…
Heteronuclear dimers are of significant interest to experiments seeking to exploit ultracold polar molecules in a number of novel ways including precision measurement, quantum computing, and quantum simulation. We calculate highly accurate Born-Oppenheimer total energies and electric dipole moments as a function of internuclear separation for two such dimers, LiSr and KRb. We apply fully-correlated, high-accuracy quantum Monte Carlo methods for evaluating these molecular properties in a many-body framework. We use small-core effective potentials combined with multi-reference Slater-Jastrow tri…
We propose a general framework for finding the ground state of many-body fermionic systems by using feed-forward neural networks. The anticommutation relation for fermions is usually implemented to a variational wave function by the Slater determinant (or Pfaffian), which is a computational bottleneck because of the numerical cost of $O(N^3)$ for $N$ particles. We bypass this bottleneck by explicitly calculating the sign changes associated with particle exchanges in real space and using fully connected neural networks for optimizing the rest parts of the wave function. This reduces the computa…
In this work, we present the first implementation of the transcorrelated electronic Hamiltonian in an optimization procedure for matrix product states by the density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) algorithm. In the transcorrelation ansatz, the electronic Hamiltonian is similarity-transformed with a Jastrow factor to describe the cusp in the wave function at electron-electron coalescence. As a result, the wave function is easier to approximate accurately with the conventional expansion in terms of one-particle basis functions and Slater determinants. The transcorrelated Hamiltonian in firs…
