Interior solutions of Einstein's equations with a non-zero cosmological constant are given for static and spherically symmetric configurations of uniform density. The metric tensor and pressure are determined for both positive and negative values of the cosmological constant. Limits on the outer radius of the interior solutions are established. It is shown that, contrary to the cases of the limits on the interior Schwarzschild and Reissner--Nordström solutions with a zero cosmological constant, these limits do not fully coincide with the conditions of embeddability of the optical reference geometry associated with the exterior (vacuum) Schwarzschild--de Sitter spacetime.
We derive matter collineations for some static spherically symmetric spacetimes and compare the results with Killing, Ricci and Curvature symmetries. We conclude that matter and Ricci collineations are not, in general, the same.
An analitical approximation of $<ϕ^2>$ for a massive scalar field in a zero temperature vacuum state in static spherically symmetric spacetimes is obtained. The calculations are based on the method for computing vacuum expectations values for scalar fields in general static spherically symmetric spacetimes derived by Anderson, Hiscock and Samuel [Phys. Rev. D {\bf 51}, 4337 (1995)]. The analitical approximation is used to compute $<ϕ^2>$ in Schwarzschild and wormhole spacetimes.
A complete classification of locally spherically symmetric four-dimensional Lorentzian spacetimes is given in terms of their local conformal symmetries. The general solution is given in terms of canonical metric types and the associated conformal Lie algebras. The analysis is based upon the local conformal decomposition into 2+2 reducible spacetimes and the Petrov type. A variety of physically meaningful example spacetimes are discussed.
Self-similar spacetimes are of importance to cosmology and to gravitational collapse problems. We show that self-similarity or the existence of a homothetic Killing vector field for spherically symmetric spacetimes implies the separability of the spacetime metric in terms of the co-moving coordinates and that the metric is, uniquely, the one recently reported in [cqg1]. The spacetime, in general, has non-vanishing energy-flux and shear. The spacetime admits matter with any equation of state.
In this paper, we find all the Conformal Killing Vectors (CKVs) and their Lie Algebra for the recently reported [cqg1] spherically symmetric, shear-free separable metric spacetimes with non-vanishing energy or heat flux. We also solve the geodesic equatios of motion for the spacetime under consideration.
Sonic point/photon sphere (SP/PS) correspondence is a theoretical phenomenon which appears in fluid dynamics on curved spacetime and its existence has been recently proved in quite wide situations as theorems. The theorems state that a sonic point (SP) of radiation fluid flow must be on an unstable photon sphere (PS) when the fluid flows radially or rotationally on an equatorial plane in spherically symmetric spacetime of arbitrary dimensions. In this paper, we investigate SP/PS correspondence in spherically, planarly and hyperbolically symmetric spacetime. As the corresponding objects of phot…
It is known that spherically symmetric spacetimes admit flat spacelike foliations. We point out a simple method of seeing this result via the Hamiltonian constraints of general relativity. The method yields explicit formulas for the extrinsic curvatures of the slicings.
We expound in detail a method frequently used to reduce the Dirac equation in D-dimensional (D >= 4) spherically symmetric spacetimes to a pair of coupled partial differential equations in two variables. As a simple application of these results we exactly calculate the quasinormal frequencies of the uncharged Dirac field propagating in the D-dimensional Nariai spacetime.
This work deals with intersection points: conjugate points and cut points, of timelike geodesics emanating from a common initial point in special spacetimes. The paper contains three results. First, it is shown that radial timelike geodesics in static spherically symmetric spacetimes are globally maximal (have no cut points) in adequate domains. Second, in one of ultrastatic spherically symmetric spacetimes, Morris--Thorne wormhole, it is found which geodesics have cut points (and these must coincide with conjugate points) and which ones are globally maximal on their entire segments. This resu…
A definition of quantum singularity for the case of static spacetimes has recently been extended to conformally static spacetimes. Here the theory behind quantum singularities in conformally static spacetimes is reviewed, and then applied to a class of spherically symmetric, conformally static spacetimes, including as special cases those studied by Roberts, by Fonarev, and by Husain, Martinez, and Núñez. We use solutions of the generally coupled, massless Klein-Gordon equation as test fields. In this way we find the ranges of metric parameters and coupling coefficients for which classical time…
The closed-universe recollapse conjecture is studied for a class of closed spherically symmetric spacetimes which includes those having as a matter source: (1) a massless scalar field; (2) a perfect fluid obeying the equation of state $ρ= P$; and (3) null dust. It is proven that all timelike curves in any such spacetime must have length less than $6 \max_Σ(2m)$, where $m$ is the mass associated with the spheres of symmetry and $Σ$ is any Cauchy surface for the spacetime. The simplicity of this result leads us to conjecture that a similar bound can be established for the more general sphericall…
We summarize the consequences of the twin assumptions of (discrete) self-similarity and spherical symmetry for the global structure of a spacetime. All such spacetimes can be constructed from two building blocks, the "fan" and "splash". Each building block contains one radial null geodesic that is invariant under the self-similarity (self-similarity horizon).
It is known that spherically symmetric static spacetimes admit a foliation by °at hypersurfaces. Such foliations have explicitly been constructed for some spacetimes, using different approaches, but none of them have proved or even discussed the uniqueness of these foliations. The issue of uniqueness becomes more important due to suitability of °at foliations for studying black hole physics. Here °at spherically symmetric spacelike hy- persurfaces are obtained by a direct method. It is found that spherically symmetric static spacetimes admit °at spherically symmetric hypersurfaces, and that th…
This paper investigates the global properties of a class of spherically symmetric spacetimes. The class contains the maximal development of asymptotically flat spherically symmetric initial data for a wide variety of coupled Einstein-matter systems. For this class, it is proven here that the existence of a single trapped surface or marginally trapped surface implies the completeness of future null infinity and the formation of an event horizon whose area radius is bounded by twice the final Bondi mass.
In this paper, Killing vectors of spherically spacetimes have been evaluated in the context of teleparallel theory of gravitation. Further, we investigate the Killing vectors of the Friedmann metrics. It is found that for static spherically spacetimes the number of Killing vectors turn out to be \emph{seven} while for the Friedmann models, we obtain \emph{six} teleparallel Killing vectors. The results are then compared with those of General Relativity. We conclude that both of these descriptions of gravity do not provide the consistent results in general. However, these results may coincide un…
In this talk we show that any spherically symmetric spacetime admits locally a maximal spacelike slicing. The above condition is reduced to solve a decoupled system of first order quasi-linear partial differential equations. The solution may be accomplished analytical or numerically. We provide a general procedure to construct such maximal slicings.
We give the necessary and sufficient (local) conditions for a metric tensor to be a non conformally flat spherically symmetric solution. These conditions exclusively involve explicit concomitants of the Riemann tensor. As a direct application we obtain the {\em ideal} labeling of the Schwarzschild, Reissner-Nordström and Lemaître-Tolman-Bondi solutions.
We construct conformastat spherically symmetric spacetimes representing anisotropic fluid matter distributions from given solutions of the Poisson's equation of Newtonian gravity and its corresponding circular speed profile. As simple examples, we present three families of spherically symmetric spacetimes which we apply in constructing new models of relativistic anisotropic thick spherical shells, and of relativistic galaxy models composite by a central spherical bulge, the thick disk and the dark matter halo, writing in this case the metric in cylindrical coordinates. Moreover, the geodesic m…
We apply the Dirac-Bergmann algorithm for the analysis of constraints to gauge theories defined on spherically symmetric black hole backgrounds. We find that the constraints for a given theory are modified on such spacetimes through the presence of additional contributions from the horizon. As a concrete example, we consider the Maxwell field on a black hole background, and determine the role of the horizon contributions on the dynamics of the theory.
In this paper, the gauge choices in general spherically symmetric spacetimes have been explored. We construct the gauge invariant variables and the master equations for both the Detweiler easy gauge and the Regge-Wheeler gauge, respectively. The particular cases for $l=0,1$ are also been investigated. Our results provide analytical calculations of metric perturbation in general spherically symmetric spacetimes, which can be applied to various cases, including the Effective-One-Body problem. A simple example is presented to show how the metric perturbation components are related to the source p…
We present a counter example to a theorem given by Amir {\em et al.} J. Math. Phys. {\bf 35}, 3005 (1994). We also comment on a misleading statements of the same reference.
In Schwarzschild spacetime the value $r=3m$ of the radius coordinate is characterized by three different properties: (a) there is a ``light sphere'', (b) there is ``centrifugal force reversal'', (c) it is the upper limiting radius for a non-transparent Schwarschild source to act as a gravitational lens that produces infinitely many images. In this paper we prove a theorem to the effect that these three properties are intimately related in {\em any} spherically symmetric static spacetime. We illustrate the general results with some examples including black-hole spacetimes and Morris-Thorne worm…
We use Moeller's energy-momentum complex in order to explicitly compute the energy and momentum density distributions for an exact solution of Einstein's field equations with a negative cosmological constant minimally coupled to a static massless scalar field in a static, spherically symmetric background in (2+1)-dimensions.
We describe a method to analyze causal geodesics in static and spherically symmetric spacetimes of Kerr-Schild form which, in particular, allows for a detailed study of the geodesics in the vicinity of the central singularity by means of a regularization procedure based on a generalization of the McGehee regularization for the motion of Newtonian point particles moving in a power-law potential. The McGehee regularization was used by Belbruno and Pretorius to perform a dynamical system regularization of the central singularity of the motion of massless test particles in the Schwarzschild spacet…
In this paper we derive the inverse spatial Laplacian for static, spherically symmetric backgrounds by solving Poisson's equation for a point source. This is different from the electrostatic Green function, which is defined on the four dimensional static spacetime, while the equation we consider is defined on the spatial hypersurface of such spacetimes. This Green function is relevant in the Hamiltonian dynamics of theories defined on spherically symmetric backgrounds, and closed form expressions for the solutions we find are absent in the literature. We derive an expression in terms of elemen…
We prove that all spherically symmetric static spacetimes which are both regular at r=0 and satisfying the single energy condition rho + p_r + p_t >= 0 cannot contain any black hole region (equivalently, they must satisfy 2m/r <= 1 everywhere). This result holds even when the spacetime is allowed to contain a finite number of matching hypersurfaces. This theorem generalizes a result by Baumgarte and Rendall when the matter contents of the space-time is a perfect fluid and also complements their results in the general non-isotropic case.
The conformal field equations are used to discuss the local existence of spherically symmetric solutions to the Einstein-Yang-Mills system which behave asymptotically like the anti-de Sitter spacetime. By using a gauge based on conformally privileged curves we obtain a formulation of the problem in terms of an initial boundary value problem on which a general class of maximally dissipative boundary conditions can be discussed. The relation between these boundary conditions and the notion of mass on asymptotically anti-de Sitter spacetimes is analysed.
We examine potential deformations of inner black hole and cosmological horizons in Reissner-Nordström de-Sitter spacetimes. While the rigidity of the outer black hole horizon is guaranteed by theorem, that theorem applies to neither the inner black hole nor past cosmological horizon. Further for pure deSitter spacetime it is clear that the cosmological horizon can be deformed (by translation). For specific parameter choices, it is shown that both inner black hole and cosmological horizons can be infinitesimally deformed. However these do not extend to finite deformations. The corresponding res…
We investigate the proper projective collineation in non-static spherically symmetric space-times using direct integration and algebraic techniques. Studying projective collineation in the above space-times, it is shown that the space-times which admit proper projective collineations turn out to be very special classes of static spherically symmetric space-times.
A new class of solution describing an anisotropic stellar configuration satisfying Karmarkar's condition i.e. spherically symmetric metric of embedding class 1, is reported. It has been shown that the compact star model is physically well-behaved and meet all the physical requirements for a stable configuration in hydrostatic equilibrium. Our model describes compact stars like Vela X-1 and 4U1608-52 to a very good approximation.
We have studied the properties of the static, spherically symmetric solution of Jordan, Brans-Dicke theory. An exact interior solution for standard space-time line element in the Schwarzschild form is obtained.
We present a method to compute exact expressions for optical observables for static spherically symmetric spacetimes in the framework of the bilocal geodesic operator formalism. The expressions are obtained by solving the linear geodesic deviation equations for null geodesics, using the spacetime symmetries and the associated conserved quantities. We solve the equations in two different ways: by varying the geodesics with respect to their initial data and by directly integrating the equation for the geodesic deviation. The results are very general and can be applied to a variety of spacetime m…
In computational relativity, critical behaviour near the black hole threshold has been studied numerically for several models in the last decade. In this paper we present a spatial Galerkin method, suitable for finding numerical solutions of the Einstein-Dirac equations in spherically symmetric spacetime (in polar/areal coordinates). The method features exact conservation of the total electric charge and allows for a spatial mesh adaption based on physical arclength. Numerical experiments confirm excellent robustness and convergence properties of our approach. Hence, this new algorithm is well…
We show that it is possible to embed the 1+1 dimensional reduction of certain spherically symmetric black hole spacetimes into 2+1 Minkowski space. The spacetimes of interest (Schwarzschild de-Sitter, Schwarzschild anti de-Sitter, and Reissner-Nordstrom near the outer horizon) represent a class of metrics whose geometries allow for such embeddings. The embedding diagrams have a dynamic character which allows one to represent the motion of test particles. We also analyze various features of the embedding construction, deriving the general conditions under which our procedure provides a smooth e…
We categorize the global structure of spherically symmetric static solutions of Einstein SU(2) Yang Mills equations with positive cosmological constant that are smooth at the center of spherical symmetry.
The choice of the area operator in loop quantum gravity is by no means unique. In addition to the area operator commonly used in loop quantum gravity there is also an area operator introduced by Krasnov in 1998, which gives uniformly spaced area spectra for the horizons of spacetime. Using Krasnov's area operator we consider the thermodynamics of spherically symmetric spacetimes equipped with horizons in loop quantum gravity. Among other things, our approach implies, in a pretty simple manner, that every horizon of spacetime emits thermal radiation and possesses emtropy which, in the natural u…
After some introductory discussion of the definition of Finsler spacetimes and their symmetries, we consider a class of spherically symmetric and static Finsler spacetimes which are small perturbations of the Schwarzschild spacetime. The deviations from the Schwarzschild spacetime are encoded in three perturbation functions $ϕ_0(r)$, $ϕ_1(r)$ and $ϕ_2(r)$ which have the following interpretations: $ϕ_0$ perturbs the time function, $ϕ_1$ perturbs the radial length measurement and $ϕ_2$ introduces a spatial anisotropy which is a genuine Finsler feature. We work out the equations of motion for fre…
Gravitational lensing by the light sphere of compact objects like black holes and wormholes will give us information on the compact objects. In this paper, we provide an improved strong deflection limit analysis in a general asymptotically flat, static, spherically symmetric spacetime. The strong deflection limit analysis also works in ultrastatic spacetimes. As an example of an ultrastatic spacetime, we reexamine the deflection angle in the strong deflection limit in an Ellis wormhole spacetime. Using the strong deflection limit, we obtain the deflection angle analytically for the Reissner-No…
We calculate the total energy of an exact spherically symmetric solutions, i.e., Schwarzschild and Reissner Nordstr$\ddot{o}$m, using the gravitational energy-momentum 3-form within the tetrad formulation of general relativity. We explain how the effect of the inertial makes the total energy unphysical! Therefore, we use the covariant teleparallel approach which makes the energy always physical one. We also show that the inertial has no effect on the calculation of momentum.
We investigate the scalar Green function for spherically symmetric spacetimes expressed as a coordinate series expansion in the separation of the points. We calculate the series expansion of the function $V(x,x')$ appearing in the Hadamard parametrix of the scalar Green function to very high order. This expansion is then used to investigate the convergence properties of the series and to estimate its radius of convergence. Using the method of Pade approximants, we show that the series can be extended beyond its radius of convergence to within a short distance of the normal neighborhood boundar…
We utilize a recent formulation of a spherically symmetric spacetime endowed with a general decomposition of the energy momentum tensor [Phys. Rev. D, 75, 024031 (2007)] to derive equations governing spherically symmetric distributions of electromagnetic matter. We show the system reduces to the Reissner-Nordstrom spacetime in general, spherically symmetric coordinates in the vacuum limit. Furthermore, we show reduction to the charged Vaidya spacetime in non-null coordinates when certain equations of states are chosen. A model of gravitational collapse is discussed whereby a charged fluid resi…
We classify all spherically symmetric and homothetic spacetimes that are allowed kinematically by constructing them from a small number of building blocks. We then restrict attention to a particular dynamics, namely perfect fluid matter with the scale-free barotropic equation of state p = alpha mu where 0<alpha<1 is a constant. We assign conformal diagrams to all solutions in the complete classification of Carr and Coley, and so establish which of the kinematic possibilities are realized for these dynamics. We pay particular attention to those solutions which arise as critical solutions during…
We investigate solutions of Einstein field equations for the non-static spherically symmetric perfect fluid case using different equations of state. The properties of an exact spherically symmetric perfect fluid solutions are obtained which contain shear. We obtain three different solutions out of these one turns out to be an incoherent dust solution and the other two are stiff matter solutions.
The Johannsen-Psaltis spacetime explicitly violates the no hair theorem. It describes rotating black holes with scalar hair in the form of parametric deviations from the Kerr metric. In principle, black hole solutions in any modified theory of gravity could be written in terms of the Johannsen-Psaltis metric. We study the accretion of gas onto a static limit of this spacetime. We utilise a recently proposed pseudo-Newtonian formulation of the dynamics around arbitrary static, spherically symmetric spacetimes. We obtain a potential that generalises the Paczyński-Wiita potential to the static Jo…
The thermodynamic properties of a shell of bosons with the inner surface locating at Planck length away from the horizon of Schwarzschild black holes by using statistical mechanics are studied. The covariant partition function of bosons is obtained, from which the Bose-Einstein condensation of bosons is found at a non-zero temperature in the curved spacetimes. As a special case of bosons, we analyze the entropy of photon gas near the horizon of the Schwarzschild black hole, which shows an area dependence similar to the Bekenstein-Hawking entropy. The results may offer new perspectives on the s…
We complete the intrinsic characterization of spherically symmetric solutions partially accomplished in a previous paper [Class.Quant.Grav. (2010) 27 205024]. In this approach we consider every compatible algebraic type of the Ricci tensor, and we analyze specifically the conformally flat case for perfect fluid and Einstein-Maxwell solutions. As a direct application we obtain the {\em ideal} labeling (exclusively involving explicit concomitants of the metric tensor) of the Schwarzschild interior metric and the Vaidya solution. The Stephani universes and some significative subfamilies are also …
In geometric inequalities ADM mass plays more fundamental role than the concept of quasi-local mass. This paper is to demonstrate that using the quasi-local mass some new insights can be acquired. In spherically symmetric spacetimes the Misner-Sharp mass and the concept of the Kodama vector field provides an ideal setting to the investigations of geometric inequalities. We applying the proposed new techniques to investigate the spacetimes containing black hole or cosmological horizons but we shall also apply them in context of normal bodies. Most of the previous investigations applied only the…
We consider the problem of determination of a volume of some bounded space-like hypersurfaces in the case of spherically symmetric spacetimes. In the case when the hypersurfaces is cut or bounded by a light-like hypersurface the problem may not be well defined. In order to define properly the volume we introduce the volume forms related to the given foliation (observer) of the considered spacetime. In the case of the constant curvature slice the volume of the hypersurface cut by the horizon (light-like surface) becomes composed of the two parts, outer and inner, treated differently. We compute…
A canonical formalism for spherical symmetry, originally developed by Kuchař to describe vacuum Schwarzschild black holes, is extended to include a spherically symmetric, massless, scalar field source. By introducing the ADM mass as a canonical coordinate on phase space, one finds that the super-Hamiltonian and supermomentum constraints for the coupled system simplify considerably. Yet, despite this simplification, it is difficult to find a functional time formalism for the theory. First, the configuration variable that played the role of time for the vacuum theory is no longer a spacetime sca…
There was obtained a numerical external solution for the exact system of the RTG equations with some natural boundary conditions in the static spherically symmetric case. The properties of the solution are discussed.
The spherically symmetric static spacetimes are classified according to their matter collineations. These are studied when the energy-momentum tensor is degenerate and also when it is non-degenerate. We have found a case where the energy-momentum tensor is degenerate but the group of matter collineations is finite. For the non-degenerate case, we obtain either {\it four}, {\it five}, {\it six} or {\it ten} independent matter collineations in which four are isometries and the rest are proper. We conclude that the matter collineations coincide with the Ricci collineations but the constraint equa…
We have found some new exact static spherically symmetric interior solutions of metric $f(R)$ gravitational theories describing the equilibrium configuration of a star. Then the solution is matched to the exterior solution and thus gives a complete description of a star in $R^{1-n/2}$ theory.
The gravitational collapse of a spherical distribution, in a class of f(R) theories of gravity, where f(R) is power function of R, is discussed. The spacetime is assumed to admit a homothetic Killing vector. In the collapsing modes, some of the situations indeed hit a singularity, but they are all covered with an apparent horizon. Some peculiar cases are observed where the collapsing body settles to a constant radius at a given value of the radial coordinate.
Lorentz violation is motivated by quantum gravity and it is generically described by nondynamical tensors. In this work a Lorentz violating extension of general relativity is studied where a nondynamical tensor couples to the Weyl tensor. A family of static and spherically symmetric solutions in vacuum is found, confirming that there are consistent solutions with explicit Lorentz violation in dynamical spacetimes. These solutions produce an unconventional dependence of the gravitational redshift, which, in turn, leads to the first bounds on such nondynamical tensor that do not rely on the phys…
Using tunnelling approach, Hawking radiation is derived for a general class of non-static spherically symmetric space time. The standard tunnelling rate formula is obtained using the unified first law of thermodynamics on the trapping horizon and Hawking temperature is measured by an Kodama observer inside the horizon.
The Riemann, Ricci and Einstein tensors for N-dimensional spherically symmetric spacetimes in various systems of coordinates are studied, and the general metric for conformally flat spacetimes is given. As an application, all the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker-like solutions for a perfect fluid with an equation of state $p = k ρ$ are found. Then, these solutions are used to model the gravitational collapse of a compact ball, by first cutting them along a timelike hypersurface and then joining them with asymptotically flat Vaidya solutions. It is found that when the collapse has continuous self-sim…
It is well known that static spherically symmetric spacetimes can admit foliations by flat spacelike hypersurfaces, which are best described in terms of the Painlevè--Gullstrand coordinates. The uniqueness and existence of such foliations were addressed earlier. In this paper, we prove, purely geometrically, that any possible foliation of a static spherically symmetric spacetime by an arbitrary codimension-one spherical spacelike geometry, up to time translation and rotation, is unique, and we find the algebraic condition under which it exists. This leads us to what can be considered as the mo…
We study the dominant late-time behaviors of massive scalar fields in static and spherically symmetric spacetimes. Considering the field evolution in the far zone where the gravitational field is weak, we show under which conditions the massive field oscillates with an amplitude that decays slowly as $t^{-5/6}$ at very late times, as previously found in (say) the Schwarzschild case. Our conclusion is that this long-lived oscillating tail is generally observed at timelike infinity in black hole spacetimes, while it may not be able to survive if the central object is a normal star. We also discu…
