The crystal structure and numerous normal and superconducting state properties of layered tetragonal (P4/nmm) LaFeAsO, with F-doping of 11 %, are reported. Resistivity measurements give an onset transition temperature Tc = 28.2 K, and low field magnetic susceptibility data indicate bulk superconductivity. In applied magnetic field, analysis of the resistive transition results in a critical field Hc2 = 30 T and a coherence length 35 A. An upper limit for the electron carrier concentration of 1 x 10^21 cm-3 is inferred from Hall data just above Tc. Strong electron-electron correlations are suggested from temperature-dependent resistivity, Seebeck coefficient, and thermal conductivity data. Anomalies near Tc are observed in both Seebeck coefficient and thermal conductivity data.
In this contribution we review recent ARPES results on the dressing of the charge carriers in high-temperature superconductors. After an introduction into the cuprates and their electronic structure, ARPES, the spectral function and the self-energy function in the normal state and in the superconducting state is discussed.. Finally results on the dressing of the charge carriers in the system Bi2Sr2caCu2O7 at the nodal and the antinodal point are presented.
In this paper we report a direct evidence of the suppression of critical current due to pair-breaking in a superconducting micro-bridge when the measurement is carried out by injecting spin polarised carriers instead of normal electrons. A thin layer of La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 was used as the source of spin polarised carriers. The micro-bridge was formed on the DyBa2Cu3O7-d thin film by photo-lithographic techniques. The design of our spin-injection device allowed us to inject spin-polarised carriers from the La0.7Ca0.3MnO3 layer directly to the DyBa2Cu3O7- d micro-bridge (without any insulating buffer…
We evaluate the doping dependence of the quasiparticle current and low temperature superfluid density in two slave-particle theories of the tt't''J model -- the slave-boson theory and doped-carrier theory. In the slave-boson theory, the nodal quasiparticle current renormalization factor $α$ vanishes proportionally to the zero temperature superfluid density $ρ_S(0)$; however, we find that away from the $ρ_S(0) \to 0$ limit $α$ displays a much weaker doping dependence than $ρ_S(0)$. A similar conclusion applies to the doped-carrier theory, which differentiates the nodal and antinodal regions of …
We study the variation of the electronic properties at the surface of a high temperature superconductor as a function of vacuum conditions in angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) experiments. Normally, under less than ideal vacuum conditions the carrier concentration of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O{8+x} (Bi2212) increases with time due to the absorption of oxygen from CO2 and CO molecules that are prime contaminants present in ultra high vacuum (UHV) systems. We find that in a high quality vacuum environment at low temperatures, the surface of Bi2212 is quite stable (the carrier concentration rem…
Carrier injection performed in oxygen-deficient YBa2Cu3O7(YBCO) hetero-structure junctions exhibited tunable resistance that was entirely different with behaviors of semiconductor devices. Tunable superconductivity in YBCO junctions, increasing over 20 K in transition temperature, has achieved by using electric processes. To our knowledge, this is the first observation that intrinsic property of high TC superconductors superconductivity can be adjusted as tunable functional parameters of devices. The fantastic phenomenon caused by carrier injection was discussed based on a proposed charge carr…
A pseudogap (PG) was introduced by Mott to describe a state of matter which has a minimum in the density of states at the Fermi level, deep enough for states to become localized. It can arise either from Coulomb repulsion between electrons, or due to an incipient charge or spin order, or a combination of the two. These states are rapidly fluctuating in time with random phase, so they are hard to observe experimentally. Here we present the first coherent quench measurements of the dynamical transition to the pseudogap state in the prototype high temperature superconductor Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_…
We discuss the evolution from BCS to Bose superconductivity versus carrier density in gated two-dimensional s-wave superconductors. We show that the transition from the normal to the superconducting state is controlled by the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless vortex-antivortex pairing mechanism, and that the evolution from high carrier density (BCS pairing) to low carrier density (Bose pairing) is just a crossover in s-wave systems. We compare our results to recent experiments on the superconductor LixZrNCl, a lithium intercalated layered nitride, and obtain very good quantitative agreement at l…
Angle-resolved photoemission measurements on the electron-doped cuprate Sm(1.85)Ce(0.15)CuO(4) evidence anisotropic dressing of charge-carriers due to many-body interactions. Most significantly, the scattering rate along the zone boundary saturates for binding energies larger than ~200 meV, while along the diagonal direction it increases nearly linearly with the binding energy in the energy range ~150-500 meV. These results indicate that many-body interactions along the diagonal direction are strong down to the bottom of the band, while along the zone-bounday they become very weak at energies …
The unusual slow carrier relaxation dynamics - observed in femtosecond pump-probe experiments on high-temperature superconductors and recently also in a charge-density-wave system - is analyzed in terms of a model for relaxation of carriers in intra-gap states. The data on YBa_2Cu_3O_7-delta near optimum doping and K_0.3$MoO_3 are found to be described very well with the model using a BCS-like gap which closes at T_c. From the analysis of the data we conclude that a significant intra-gap density of localized states exists in these materials, which can be clearly distinguished from quasiparticl…
In order to understand the origin of superconductivity, it is crucial to ascertain the nature and origin of the primary carriers available to participate in pairing. Recent quantum oscillation experiments on high Tc cuprate superconductors have revealed the existence of a Fermi surface akin to normal metals, comprising fermionic carriers that undergo orbital quantization. However, the unexpectedly small size of the observed carrier pocket leaves open a variety of possibilities as to the existence or form of any underlying magnetic order, and its relation to d-wave superconductivity. Here we pr…
The pseudogap is a central puzzle of cuprate superconductors. Its connection to the Mott insulator at low doping $p$ remains ambiguous and its relation to the charge order that reconstructs the Fermi surface at intermediate $p$ is still unclear. Here we use measurements of the Hall coefficient in magnetic fields up to 88 T to show that Fermi-surface reconstruction by charge order in YBa$_2$Cu$_3$O$_y$ ends sharply at a critical doping $p = 0.16$, distinctly lower than the pseudogap critical point at $p^* = 0.19$. This shows that pseudogap and charge order are separate phenomena. We then find t…
We have measured temperature dependence of thermoelectric power (TEP) on MgB$_2$ superconductor under hydrostatic pressure. The sign and temperature dependence of TEP shows metallic hole carriers are dominant with activation type contribution at higher temperature. TEP increases with pressure while $T_c$ decrease with ratio -0.136 K/kbar. The data are discussed in consideration of carriers from different bands and anisotropy of compressibility.
In contrast to bulk FeSe superconductor, heavily electron-doped FeSe-derived superconductors show relatively high Tc without hole Fermi surfaces and nodal superconducting gap structure, which pose great challenges on pairing theories in the iron-based superconductors. In the heavily electron-doped FeSe-based superconductors, the dominant factors and the exact working mechanism that is responsible for the high Tc need to be clarified. In particular, a clean control of carrier concentration remains to be a challenge for revealing how superconductivity and Fermi surface topology evolves with carr…
In this report we review recent experimental results on photoexcited carrier relaxation dynamics on high temperature superconductors (HTSC) probed by a femtosecond time-resolved optical spectroscopy, and compare the results with the data obtained on quasi two dimensional charge density waves. In these experiments, a femtosecond laser pump pulse excites electron-hole pairs via an inter-band transition in the material. These hot carriers rapidly release their energy via electron-electron and electron-phonon collisions reaching states near the Fermi energy within ~100 fs. If an energy gap is pres…
When the Fermi level is near the top of a band the carriers (holes) are maximally dressed by electron-ion and electron-electron interactions. The theory of hole superconductivity predicts that only in that case can superconductivity occur, and that it is driven by $undressing$ of the carriers at the Fermi energy upon pairing. Indeed, experiments show that dressed hole carriers in the normal state become undressed electron carriers in the superconducting state. This leads to a description of superconductors as giant atoms, where undressed time-reversed electrons are paired and propagate freely …
The effects of low carrier density and carrier compensation on mixed-state thermal transport are investigated beyond the quasiclassical approximation. It is shown that, contrary to the usual observations, the interplay of the two effects leads to an {\it increase} in the thermal conductivity immediately below the upper critical field $H_{c2}$. Our result can account for the anomalous behavior of the mixed-state thermal conductivity near $H_{c2}$ recently observed in URu$_2$Si$_2$.
We investigate the currently debated issue concerning whether transition metal substitutions dope carriers in iron based superconductors. From first-principles calculations of the configuration-averaged spectral function of BaFe$_2$As$_2$ with disordered Co/Zn substitutions of Fe, important doping effects are found beyond merely changing the carrier density. While the chemical potential shifts suggest doping of a large amount of carriers, a reduction of the coherent carrier density is found due to the loss of spectral weight. Therefore, none of the change in the Fermi surface, density of state…
It is generally believed that superconductivity can occur in materials irrespective of whether the charge carriers in the material are electrons or holes. Here we point out that Josephson tunneling would not occur between superconductors with charge carriers of opposite sign. Consequently, observation of Josephson tunneling between two superconductors implies that their charge carriers have the same sign. We propose that this has profound implications for the understanding of superconductivity and in particular is consistent with the theory of hole superconductivity.
An unresolved issue concerning cuprate superconductors is whether the distribution of carriers in the CuO(2) plane is uniform or inhomogeneous. Because the carriers comprise a small fraction of the total charge density and may be rapidly fluctuating, modulations are difficult to detect directly. Here we demonstrate that in anomalous x-ray scattering at the oxygen K edge of the cuprates, the contribution of carriers to the scattering amplitude is selectively magnified 82 times. This enhances diffraction from the doped holes by more than 10^3, permitting direct structural analysis of the superco…
Nature of extrinsic and intrinsic self-trapping (ST) of charge carriers in cuprates have been studied theoretically. The binding energies and radii of the extrinsic and intrinsic large polarons and bipolarons in cuprates are calculated variationally using the continuum model and adiabatic approximation. We have shown that the extrinsic and intrinsic three-dimensional (3D) large bipolarons exist in underdoped cuprates at $η=\varepsilon_{\infty}/\varepsilon_0<0.127$ and $η<0.138$, respectively [where $\varepsilon_{\infty}$ ($\varepsilon_0$) is the optic (static) dielectric constant].
Density functional studies of 26K superconducting LaFeAs(O,F) are reported. We find a low carrier density, high density of states, $N(E_F)$ and modest phonon frequencies relative to $T_c$. The high $N(E_F)$ leads to proximity to itinerant magnetism, with competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic fluctuations and the balance between these controlled by doping level. Thus LaFeAs(O,F) is in a unique class of high $T_c$ superconductors: high $N(E_F)$ ionic metals near magnetism.
We propose a dynamical explanation of the Meissner effect in superconductors and predict the existence of a spin Meissner effect: that a macroscopic spin current flows within a London penetration depth $λ_L$ of the surface of superconductors in the absence of applied external fields, with carrier density = the superfluid density and carrier speed $v=\hbar/(4m_eλ_L$) ($m_e=$bare electron mass). The two members of a Cooper pair circulate in orbits of radius $2λ_L$ in opposite direction and the spin current in a Cooper pair has orbital angular momentum $\hbar$. Our description also provides a 'ge…
Through far-infrared studies of La2-xSrxCuO4 single crystals for x = 0.063, 0.07, 0.09, and 0.11, we found that only ~ 0.2 % of the total holes participated in the nearly dissipationless normal state charge transport and superconductivity. We have also observed characteristic collective modes at w ~ 18 cm-1 and 22 cm-1 due to the bound carriers in an electronic lattice (EL) state and the free carriers are massively screened by the EL. Our findings lead us to propose a composite picture of the charge system where the free carriers are coupled to and riding on the EL. This unique composite syste…
Characteristic normal-state charge transport is found in the oxygen-deficient iron-arsenides LnFeAsO1-y (Ln: La and Nd) with the highest Tc's among known Fe-based superconductors. The effect of "doping" in this system is mainly on the carrier scattering, quite distinct from that in high-Tc cuprates. In the superconducting regime of the La system with maximum Tc = 28 K, the low-temperature resistivity is dominated by a T^2 term. On the other hand, in the Nd system with Tc higher than 40 K, the carriers are subject to stronger scattering showing T-linear resistivity and small magnetoresistance. …
Superconductor-based light-emitting diode (superconductor-based LED) in strong light-confinement regime are characterized as a superconductor-based three-terminal device, and its transport properties are quantitatively investigated. In the gate-controlled region, we confirm the realization of new-type Josephson field effect transistor (JoFET) performance, where the channel cross-sectional area of the junction is directly modulated by the gate voltage. In the current-injected region, the superconducting critical current of $μ$A order in the Josephson junction is found to be modulated by the ste…
The London moment is the magnetic moment acquired by a rotating superconductor. We propose that the London moment reveals the following fundamental properties of the superconducting state: (i) superconductors (unlike normal metals) know the $sign$ of the charge carriers, (ii) the superconducting charge carriers are $free$ electrons, (iii) electrons are expelled from the interior to the surface in the transition to the superconducting state, (iv) superfluid electrons occupy orbits of radius $2λ_L$ ($λ_L=$London penetration depth), and (v) a spin current exists in the ground state of superconduc…
We study how manifestations of strong electron-phonon interaction (EPI) depend on the carrier concentration by solving the two-dimensional Holstein model for the spin-polarized fermions using an approximation free bold-line diagrammatic Monte Carlo (BDMC) method. We show that the strong EPI, obviously present at very small Fermion concentration, is masked by the Fermi blockade effects and Migdal's theorem to the extent that it manifests itself as moderate one at large carriers densities. Suppression of strong EPI fingerprints is in agreement with experimental observations in doped high tempera…
Superconductivity mostly appears in high carrier density systems and sometimes exhibits common phase diagrams in which the critical temperature Tc continuously develops with carrier density. Superconductivity enhanced in lightly doped regime has seldom been reported, although it is an ideal direction towards the crossover between Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) and Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) limits, where the behavior of Cooper pairs changes dramatically. Here we report transport properties and superconducting gaps in single-crystalline lithium-intercalated layered nitrides (LixHfNCl and L…
The recently discovered universal scaling relation between the superconducting density and the transition temperature in high-temperature superconductors appears to indicate that those normal state carriers that are undergoing a superconducting transition at T = Tc, are experiencing critical dissipation and acting as preformed pairs.
We point out in this short communique, that be it a s-wave or d-wave superconductor, in a non equalibrium situation(i.e. in presence of excess unpolarised/polarised quasi-particles maintained by an injection current) the superconducting gap suppresion by the presence of same amount excess quasi-particles, can at best differ by a factor of 2, for a conventional BCS superconductor. For the high $T_c$ superconductors on the other hand, there is a huge difference in gap suppresion between upolarised/polarised quasiparticle injection, as observed in the experiments\cite{gold}. We argue that this th…
An SDW antiferromagnetic (SDW-AF) low temperature phase transition is generally observe and the AF spin fluctuations are considered to play an important role for the superconductivity paring mechanism in FeAs superconductors. However, a similar magnetic phase transition is not observed in FeSe superconductors, which has caused considerable discussion. We report on the intrinsic electronic states of FeSe as elucidated by transport measurements under magnetic fields using a high quality single crystal. A mobility spectrum analysis, an ab initio method that does not make assumptions on the transp…
We, basing on the quantum critical point (QCP)($p = 0.19 $), propose a phenomenological description on high-$T_c$ superconductivity in the cuprate superconductors, and suggest it divides the whole doping region into two parts: the underdoped region ($p < 0.19 $) and the overdoped region ($ p> 0.19 $). The electrons in the former are localized and form the localized Fermi liquid, a kind of the non-Fermi liquid, where the carriers are the holes; the electrons in the latter are itinerant and form the Fermi liquid, where the carriers are the electrons. We further argue that localization is a prere…
We have investigated the effect of Fe nonstoichiometry on properties of the Fe1+y(Te, Se) superconductor system by means of resistivity, Hall coefficient, magnetic susceptibility, and specific heat measurements. We find that the excess Fe at interstitial sites of the (Te, Se) layers not only suppresses superconductivity, but also results in a weakly localized electronic state. We argue that these effects originate from the magnetic coupling between the excess Fe and the adjacent Fe square planar sheets, which favors a short-range magnetic order.
The electron paramagnetic resonance study for an organic superconductor $β''$-(BEDT-TTF)$_{4}$[(H$_3$O)Ga(C$_2$O$_4$)$_3$]$\cdot$C$_6$H$_5$NO$_2$ reveals that superconductivity coexists uniformly with the charge ordered state in one material. In the charge ordered state, the interplane spin exchange is gapped, while the in-plane conductivity is not significantly modified. This anisotropic behavior is explained by the exotic charge ordered state, in which molecular-site selective carrier localization coexists with conducting carriers on other molecules. Relationship between superconductivity an…
Fermi-Dirac statistics has been utilized by introducing the average ionization energy ($E_I$) as an additional anomalous energy gap in order to derive the two-dimensional concentration of charge carriers and the phenomenological resistivity model for the superconducting polycrystalline materials. The best fitted values of $E_I$ and the charge carriers' concentration ranges in the vicinity of 4 to 9 meV and 10$^{16}$ m$^{-2}$ respectively for the superconducting single crystal samples and polycrystalline compounds synthesized with various compositions via solid-state reactions. The phenomenolog…
Angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) is used to study the scattering rates of charge carriers from the hole pockets near Gamma in the iron-based high-Tc hole doped superconductors KxBa1-xFe2As2 x=0.4 and KxEu1-xFe2As2 x=0.55$ and the electron doped compound Ba(Fe1-xCox)2As2 x=0.075. The scattering rate for any given band is found to depend linearly on energy, indicating a non-Fermi liquid regime. The scattering rates in the hole-doped compound are considerably larger than those in the electron-doped compounds. In the hole-doped systems the scattering rate of the charge carriers of…
Magnetic penetration depth, $λ_{m}$, was measured as a function of temperature and magnetic field in single crystals of low carrier density superconductor YPtBi by using a tunnel-diode oscillator technique. Measurements in zero DC magnetic field yield London penetration depth, $λ_{L}\left(T\right)$, but in the applied field the signal includes the Campbell penetration depth, $λ_{C}\left(T\right)$, which is the characteristic length of the attenuation of small excitation field, $H_{ac}$, into the Abrikosov vortex lattice due to its elasticity. Whereas the magnetic field dependent $λ_C$ exhibit …
The evolution with carrier concentration of the electrical properties of amorphous indium oxide (InO) thin films has been studied using electronic double layer transistor configurations. Carrier variations of up to 7 X 10^(14) carriers/cm^2 were achieved using an ionic liquid as a gate dielectric. The superconductor-insulator transition was traversed and the magnitude and position of the large magnetoresistance peak found in the insulating regime were modified. The systematic variation of the magnetoresistance peak with charge concentration was found to be qualitatively consistent with a simul…
Starting from a spin-fermion model for the cuprate superconductors, we obtain an effective interaction for the charge carriers by integrating out the spin degrees of freedom. Our model predicts a quantum critical point for the superconducting interaction coupling, which sets up a threshold for the onset of superconductivity in the system. We show that the physical value of this coupling is below this threshold, thus explaining why there is no superconducting phase for the undoped system. Then, by including doping, we find a dome-shaped dependence of the critical temperature as charge carriers …
The Fermi energy, Ef of newly discovered high-Tc superconductor MgB2 and cuprates is estimated from the measured London penetration depth using a parameter-free expression. Ef of MgB2 and more than 30 lanthanum, yttrium and mercury-based cuprates appears to be about or below 100 meV, depending on doping. There is every evidence that the remarkable low value of Ef and the strong coupling of carriers with high-frequency phonons is the cause of high Tc in all newly discovered superconductors. Taking into account that the carriers mainly reside on oxygen in cuprates, on boron in magnesium diborade…
A general feature of unconventional superconductors is the existence of a superconducting dome in the phase diagram as a function of carrier concentration. For the simplest iron-based superconductor FeSe (with transition temperature Tc ~ 8 K), its Tc can be greatly enhanced by doping electrons via many routes, even up to 65 K in monolayer FeSe/SiTiO3. However, a clear phase diagram with carrier concentration for FeSe-derived superconductors is still lacking. Here, we report the observation of a series of discrete superconducting phases in FeSe thin flakes by continuously tuning carrier concent…
The conventional theory of superconductivity says that charge carriers in a metal that becomes superconducting can be either electrons or holes. I argue that this is incorrect. In order to satisfy conservation of mechanical momentum and of entropy of the universe in the superconductor to normal transition in the presence of a magnetic field it is necessary that the normal state charge carriers are holes. I will also review the empirical evidence in favor of the hypothesis that all superconductors are hole superconductors, and discuss the implications of this for the search for higher $T_c$ sup…
We report on the magnetic penetration depth, lambda, in a type II superconductor NbB_{2+x} determined by muon spin rotation method. We show in the sample with x=0.1 that lambda at 2.0 K is independent of an applied magnetic field. This suggests that the superconducting order parameter in NbB_{2+x} is isotropic, as expected for conventional BCS superconductors. Meanwhile, the superconducting carrier density (proportional to lambda^{-2}) exhibits an interesting tendency of increase with increasing T_c (where T_c varies with x). Possible origin of such behavior is discussed in comparison with the…
In conventional superconductors, the most direct evidence of the mechanism responsible for superconductivity comes from tunneling experiments in which a clear image of the electron-phonon interaction is revealed. The observed structure in the current voltage characteristics at the phonon energies can be used to measure, through inversion of the Eliashberg equations, the electron phonon spectral density α^2F(ω). The coherence length in conventional materials is long and the tunneling process probes several atomic layers into the bulk of the superconductor. On the contrary, in the high-T_c oxide…
The parent compounds of the copper oxide high-Tc superconductors are unusual insulators. Superconductivity arises when they are properly doped away from stoichiometry1. In Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+x, superconductivity results from doping with excess oxygen atoms, which introduce positive charge carriers (holes) into the CuO2 planes, where superconductivity is believed to originate. The role of these oxygen dopants is not well understood, other than the fact that they provide charge carriers. However, it is not even clear how these charges distribute in the CuO2 planes. Accordingly, many models of high-Tc…
We investigate the influence of itinerant carriers on dynamics and fluctuation of local moments in Fe-based superconductors, via linear spin-wave analysis of a spin-fermion model containing both itinerant and local degrees of freedom. Surprisingly against the common lore, instead of enhancing the ($π$,0) order, itinerant carriers with well nested Fermi surfaces is found to induce significant amount of \textit{spatial} and temporal quantum fluctuation that leads to the observed small ordered moment. Interestingly, the underlying mechanism is shown to be intra-pocket nesting-associated long-rang…
We report the pressure effect in Bi2Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+δ (Bi-2223) single crystal with a small amount of intergrowth of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8+δ (Bi-2212). Their superconducting transition temperatures Tcs showed a domelike shape as a function of pressure, which showed a good agreement with the general relation between the carrier concentration and Tc. Our experimental results indicate that high pressure can induce effective carrier doping into the multilayered high-Tc cuprate superconductor
In the framework of a two-band model, we study the phase separation regime of different kinds of strongly correlated charge carriers as a function of the energy splitting between the two sets of bands. The narrow (wide) band simulates the more localized (more delocalized) type of charge carriers. By assuming that the internal chemical pressure on the CuO$_2$ layer due to interlayer mismatch controls the energy splitting between the two sets of states, the theoretical predictions are able to reproduce the regime of phase separation at doping higher than 1/8 in the experimental pressure-doping-$…
We present a combined experimental and theoretical study of the evolution of the Fermi surface of the anomalous superconductor Pb$_{1-x}$Tl$_x$Te as a function of thallium concentration, drawing on a combination of magnetotransport measurements (Shubnikov de Haas oscillations and Hall coefficient), Angle Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES), and density functional theory (DFT) calculations of the electronic structure. Our results indicate that for Tl concentrations beyond a critical value the Fermi energy coincides with resonant impurity states in Pb$_{1-x}$Tl$_x$Te, and we rule out the…
The flux pinning mechanism of NdO0.82F0.18FeAs superconductor made under high pressure, with a critical temperature, Tc, of 51 K, has been investigated in detail in this work. The field dependence of the magnetization and the temperature dependence of the magnetoresistivity were measured in fields up to 13 T. The field dependence of the critical current density, Jc(B), was analyzed within the collective pinning model. A crossover field, Bsb, from the single vortex to the small vortex bundle pinning regime was observed. The temperature dependence of Bsb(T) is in good agreement with the delta-l …
There exists a connection between the creation of toroidal moments (TM) and the breaking of the one-cell relativistic crystalline symmetry (RCS) associated to any given crystal into which non-trivial magnetoelectric coupling effects (ME) exist. Indeed, in this kind of crystals, any interaction between a charge carrier and an elementary magnetic cell can breaks the RCS of this previous given cell by varying, in the simplest case, the continuous defining parameters of the initial RCS. This breaking can be associated to a change of the initial Galilean proper frame of any given carrier to an "eff…
Upon doping with Tl the narrow band-gap semiconductor PbTe exhibits anomalously high temperature superconductivity despite a very low carrier density as well as signatures of the Kondo effect despite an absence of magnetic moments. These phenomena have been explained by invoking 2$e$ fluctuations of the valence of the Tl dopants but a direct measurement of the mixed-valency implied by such a mechanism has not been reported to date. In this work we present the unambiguous observation of multiple valences of Tl in Tl-doped PbTe via photo emission spectroscopy measurements. It is shown via our qu…
The field and temperature dependencies of the longitudinal and Hall resistivity have been measured for FeSe${}_{1-x}$S${}_{x}$ (x=0.04, 0.09 and 0.19) single crystals. The sample FeSe${}_{0.81}$S${}_{0.19}$ does not show a transition to an orthorhombic phase and exhibits at low temperatures the transport properties quite different from those of orthorhombic samples. The behavior of FeSe${}_{0.81}$S${}_{0.19}$ is well described by the simple two band model with comparable values of hole and electron mobility. In particular, at low temperatures the transverse resistance shows a linear field depe…
Superconductivity originates from the coupling between charge carriers and bosonic excitations of either phononic or electronic origin. Identifying the most relevant pairing glue is a key step towards a clear understanding of the unconventional superconductivity. Here, by applying the ultrafast optical spectroscopy on the electron-doped cuprates La$_{1.9}$Ce$_{0.1}$CuO$_{4\pmδ}$, we discern a bosonic mode of electronic origin that has the strongest coupling with the charge carriers near $T_c$. We argue that this mode is associated with the two-dimensional antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations, a…
Alfven waves are transverse magneto-hydrodynamic waves resulting from motion of a conducting fluid in direction perpendicular to an applied magnetic field, that propagate along the magnetic field direction. I propose that Alfven-like waves can propagate along normal-superconductor phase boundaries in the presence of a magnetic field. This requires charge flow and backflow across the normal-superconductor phase boundary when the boundary moves, which is predicted by the theory of hole superconductivity but not by the conventional theory of superconductivity. The magnetic field and the domain wa…
The field and temperature dependencies of the longitudinal and Hall resistivity have been studied for high-quality FeSe${}_{1-x}$S${}_{x}$ (x up to 0.14) single crystals. Quasiclassical analysis of the obtained data indicates a strong variation of the electron and hole concentrations under the studied isovalent substitution and proximity of FeSe to the point of the majority carrier-type inversion. On this basis, we propose a `doped semimetal' scheme for the superconducting phase diagram of the FeSe family, which can be applied to other iron-based superconductors. In this scheme, the two local …
In conventional BCS superconductors, the electronic kinetic energy increases upon superfluid condensation (the change DEkin is positive). Here we show that in the high critical temperature superconductor Bi-2212, DEkin crosses over from a fully compatible conventional BCS behavior (DEkin>0) to an unconventional behavior (DEkin<0) as the free carrier density decreases. If a single mechanism is responsible for superconductivity across the whole phase diagram of high critical temperature superconductors, this mechanism should allow for a smooth transition between such two regimes around optimal d…
We have investigated the bulk and microscopic properties of the rhombohedral intermediate valence superconductor CeIr$_3$ by employing magnetization, heat capacity, and muon spin rotation and relaxation ($μ$SR) measurements. The magnetic susceptibility indicates bulk superconductivity below $T_\mathrm{C} = 3.1$~K. Heat capacity data also reveal a bulk superconducting transition at $T_\mathrm{C} = 3.1$~K with a second weak anomaly near 1.6~K. At $T_{\mathrm{C}}$, the jump in heat capacity $ΔC$/$γT_{\mathrm{C}} \sim 1.39(1)$, is slightly less than the BCS weak coupling limit of 1.43. Transverse-…
Transport properties of high transition temperature (high-Tc) superconductors have been shown to have two distinct relaxation rates. We argue that this apparent inconsistence can be resolved with an effective carrier density n linear in temperature T. Experimental evidences both for and against this explanation are analyzed and we conclude that this offers a simple yet promising scenario. Above the pseudogap temperature T* the normal state of high-Tc cuprates is close to a Fermi liquid. It however assumes non-Fermi- liquid behaviors below T*.
The attempt to describe the bell-shape dependence of the critical temperature of high-$T_{c}$ superconductors on charge carriers density is made. Its linear increase in the region of small densities (underdoped regime) is proposed to explain by the role of the order parameter phase 2D fluctuations which become less at this density growth. The critical temperature suppression in the region of large carrier densities (overdoped regime) is connected with the appearance (because of doping) of the essential damping of long-wave bosons which in the frame of the model proposed define the mechanism of…
