We study the relativistic BCS-BEC crossover within a class of Nambu-Jona-Lasinio type models, including arbitrary Lorentz-scalar pairing channels. Using the mean-field approximation we investigate spectral properties of the collective bosonic excitations in the superfluid phase, with particular attention to the Nambu--Goldstone bosons of the broken symmetry. This is a first step towards a systematic improvement of the mean-field approximation by including the fluctuation effects. The general results are illustrated on pairing in dense two-flavor quark matter - the two-flavor color superconductor.
We investigate the equation of state (EoS) along the BCS-BEC crossover for a quark system described by a Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model with multi-fermion interactions. Together with attractive channels for particle-antiparticle ($\Gs$) and particle-particle ($\Gd$) interactions, a multi-fermion channel with coupling $λ$ that accounts for the diquark-diquark repulsion is also considered. The chiral and diquark condensates are found in the mean-field approximation for different values of the coupling constants. The parameter values where the BCS-BEC crossover can take place are found, and the EoS is …
We study the evolution of dynamic properties of the BCS/BEC (Bose-Einstein Condensate) crossover in a relativistic superfluid as well as its thermodynamics. We put particular focus on the change in the soft mode dynamics throughout the crossover, and find that three different effective theories describe it; these are, the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau (TDGL) theory in the BCS regime, the Gross-Pitaevskii (GP) theory in the BEC regime, and the relativistic Gross-Pitaevskii (RGP) equation in the relativistic BEC (RBEC) regime. Based on these effective theories, we discuss how the physical natur…
We discuss a possibility of transition from color superconductivity of the standard BCS type at high density, to Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) of Cooper pairs at lower density. Examining two-flavor QCD over a wide range of baryon density, we found the size of a Cooper pair becomes small enough to be comparable to the averaged quark-quark distance at lower density. We also consider the same problem in two-color QCD.
We study the QCD phase structure in the three-flavor Nambu-Jona-Lasinio model, incorporating the interplay between the chiral and diquark condensates induced by the axial anomaly. We demonstrate that for an appropriate range of parameters of the model, the interplay leads to the low temperature critical point in the phase structure predicted by a previous Ginzburg-Landau analysis. We also show that a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of diquark molecules emerges in the intermediate density region, and as a result, a BEC-BCS crossover is realized with increasing quark chemical potential.
The BEC-BCS crossover in QCD at finite baryon and isospin chemical potentials is investigated in the Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model. The diquark condensation in two color QCD and the pion condensation in real QCD would undergo a BEC-BCS crossover when the corresponding chemical potential increases. We determined the crossover chemical potential as well as the BEC and BCS regions. The crossover is not triggered by increasing the strength of attractive interaction among quarks but driven by changing the charge density. The chiral symmetry restoration at finite temperature and density plays an importa…
The non-relativistic $G_0 G$ formalism of BCS-BEC crossover at finite temperature is extended to relativistic fermion systems. The uncondensed pairs contribute a pseudogap to the fermion excitations. The theory recovers the BCS mean field approximation at zero temperature and the non-relativistic results in a proper limit. For massive fermions, when the coupling strength increases, there exist two crossovers from the weak coupling BCS superfluid to the non-relativistic BEC state and then to the relativistic BEC state. For color superconductivity at moderate baryon density, the matter is in the…
The character change of a superfluid state due to the variation of the attractive force is investigated in the relativistic framework with a massive fermion. Two crossovers are found. One is a crossover from the usual BCS state to the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of bound fermion pairs. The other is from the BEC to the relativistic Bose-Einstein condensation (RBEC) of nearly massless bound pairs where antiparticles as well as particles dominate the thermodynamics. Possible realization of the BEC and RBEC states in the quark matter is also pointed out.
We study the crossover from BEC to BCS pairing for dilute systems but with a realistic finite-range interaction. We exhibit the changes in the excitation spectrum that provide a clean qualitative distinction between the two limits. We also study how the dilute system converges to the results from a zero-range pseudo-potential derived by Leggett.
The possibility of the crossover from the BCS pairing to the Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) of diquarks with going down in density is discussed in the framework of in the Nambu Jona-Lasinio (NJL) model. We find that the quark matter at moderate density may be close to the intermediate of the crossover, the precursory regime to the BEC phase.
We investigate the crossover from Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) pairing to a Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) in a relativistic superfluid within a boson-fermion model. The model includes, besides the fermions, separate bosonic degrees of freedom, accounting for the bosonic nature of the Cooper pairs. The crossover is realized by tuning the difference between the boson mass and boson chemical potential as a free parameter. The model yields populations of condensed and uncondensed bosons as well as gapped and ungapped fermions throughout the crossover region for arbitrary temperatures. Moreover…
By adopting a $T$-matrix based method within $G_0G$ approximation for the pair susceptibility, we studied the effects of pairing fluctuation on the BCS-BEC crossover in symmetric nuclear matter. The pairing fluctuation induces a pseudogap in the excitation spectrum of nucleon in both superfluid and normal phases. The critical temperature of superfluid transition was calculated. It differs from the BCS result remarkably when density is low. We also computed the specific heat which shows a nearly ideal BEC type temperature dependence at low density but a BCS type behavior at high density. This q…
We investigate the BCS-BEC crossover at zero temperature in the frame of a relativistic model. The universality of the BCS-BEC crossover for non-relativistic systems breaks down in relativistic case and the crossover can be induced by changing the density. When the effective scattering length is much less than the fermion Compton wavelength, we recover the non-relativistic result if the gas is initially in non-relativistic state. At ultra-strong coupling where the scattering length is of the order of the Compton wavelength, a new BEC state appears. In this state the condensed bosons become nea…
We systematically study relativistic two-species fermions with tunable attractive interactions and number-density asymmetry at zero temperature. In general, a Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) - Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) - relativistic BEC (RBEC) crossover is observed. A generalized BCS ground state and its stability are analyzed. The homogeneous superfluid phase can become unstable and we consider phase separation in real space for neutral systems. In the nonrelativistic limit, our results are consistent with well-known results. In addition to a BCS-BEC crossover similar to that in the n…
We study the QCD phase structure in the three-flavor Nambu--Jona-Lasinio model, incorporating the chiral-diquark interplay due to the axial anomaly. We demonstrate that for a certain range of model parameters, the low temperature critical point predicted by a Ginzburg-Landau analysis appears in the phase diagram. In addition, we show that the axial anomaly presents a new scenario for a possible BEC-BCS crossover in the color-flavor locked phase of QCD.
The effect of an applied magnetic field in the crossover from Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) to Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) pairing regimes is investigated. We use a model of relativistic fermions and bosons inspired by those previously used in the context of cold fermionic atoms and in the magnetic-color-flavor-locking phase of color superconductivity. It turns out that as with cold atom systems, an applied magnetic field can also tune the BCS-BEC crossover in the relativistic case. We find that no matter what the initial state is at B=0, for large enough magnetic fields the system always…
We show that the spectral split of a neutrino ensemble which initially consists of electron type neutrinos, is analogous to the BCS-BEC crossover already observed in ultra cold atomic gas experiments. Such a neutrino ensemble mimics the deleptonization burst of a core collapse supernova. Although these two phenomena belong to very different domains of physics, the propagation of neutrinos from highly interacting inner regions of the supernova to the vacuum is reminiscent of the evolution of Cooper pairs between weak and strong interaction regimes during the crossover. The Hamiltonians and the …
We investigate here the BCS BEC crossover in relativistic systems using a variational construct for the ground state and the minimization of the thermodynamic potential. This is first studied in a four fermion point interaction model and with a BCS type ansatz for the ground state with fermion pairs. It is shown that the antiparticle degrees of freedom play an important role in the BCS BEC crossover physics, even when the ratio of fermi momentum to the mass of the fermion is small. We also consider the phase structure for the case of fermion pairing with imbalanced populations. Within the ansa…
The functional renormalisation group is used for the BCS-BEC crossover in gases of ultracold fermionic atoms. In a simple truncation, we see how universality and an effective theory with composite bosonic di-atom states emerge. We obtain a unified picture of the whole phase diagram. The flow reflects different effective physics at different scales. In the BEC limit as well as near the critical temperature, it describes an interacting bosonic theory.
We show that many hydrodynamical properties of the BEC/BCS crossover in the presence of a Feshbach resonance at T=0 can be derived easily from the derivative expansion of the (exact) fully renormalized one-loop effective action. In particular, we calculate the velocity of sound throughout the BCS and BEC regimes and derive the generalized superfluid continuity equations for the composite two-fluid system.
We derive the universal high momentum factorization of the fermion self-energy in the BCS-BEC crossover of ultracold atoms using nonperturbative quantum field theoretical methods. This property is then employed to compute the Tan contact as a function of interaction strength, temperature, chemical potential and Fermi momentum. We clarify the mechanism of the factorization from an analysis of the self-consistent Schwinger-Dyson equation for the fermion propagator, and compute the perturbative contact on the BCS and BEC sides within this framework. A Functional Renormalization Group approach is …
We discuss the quantum phase transition that separates a vacuum state with fully-gapped fermion spectrum from a vacuum state with topologically-protected Fermi points (gap nodes). In the context of condensed-matter physics, such a quantum phase transition with Fermi point splitting may occur for a system of ultracold fermionic atoms in the region of the BEC-BCS crossover, provided Cooper pairing occurs in the non-s-wave channel. For elementary particle physics, the splitting of Fermi points may lead to CPT violation, neutrino oscillations, and other phenomena.
