We point out that the Meissner effect, the process by which a superconductor expels magnetic field from its interior, represents an unsolved puzzle within the London-BCS theoretical framework used to describe the physics of conventional superconductors, because it appears to give rise to non-conservation of angular momentum. Possible ways to avoid this inconsistency within the conventional theory of superconductivity are argued to be farfetched. Consequently, we argue that unless/until a consistent explanation is put forth, the existence of the Meissner effect represents an anomaly that casts doubt on the validity of the conventional framework. Instead, we point out that two elements of the unconventional theory of hole superconductivity, namely that the charge distribution in superconductors is macroscopically inhomogeneous, and the fact that spin-orbit coupling plays an essential role, allow for a consistent explanation of the Meissner effect.
Assuming that the order parameter corresponds to an equal spin triplet pairing state, we calculate the angular dependence of the upper critical field in triplet quasi-one-dimensional superconductors at high magnetic fields applied alongthe yz plane
FeSe is argued as a superconductor in the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer Bose-Einstein-condensation crossover regime where the superconducting-gap size and the superconducting transition temperature Tc are comparable to the Fermi energy. In this regime, vortex bound states should be well quantized and the preformed pairs above Tc may yield a pseudogap in the quasiparticle-excitation spectrum. We performed spectroscopic-imaging scanning tunneling microscopy to search for these features. We found Friedel-like oscillations near the vortex, which manifest the quantized levels, whereas the pseudogap was…
The evolution of Ca$_{2-x}$Na$_{x}$CuO$_{2}$Cl$_{2}$ from Mott insulator to superconductor was studied using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy. By measuring both the excitations near the Fermi energy as well as non-bonding states, we tracked the doping dependence of the electronic structure and the chemical potential with unprecedented precision. Our work reveals failures in the conventional quasiparticle theory, including the broad lineshapes of the insulator and the apparently paradoxical shift of the chemical potential within the Mott gap. To resolve this, we develop a model where t…
We examine the depairing field $H_{c2}(T)$ of non-centrosymmetric superconductors with a spin-orbit coupling larger than the Zeeman energy at $H_{c2}(0)$ by taking account of the mixing of spin-singlet and triplet pairing states due to the missing parity. When the singlet and triplet pairing components are mixed with an equal weight in a cubic non-centrosymmetric system, the paramagnetic depairing effect is significantly suppressed so that $H_{c2}(T)$ approaches its orbital-limited value. A similar event also occurs in a quasi two-dimensional Rashba non-centrosymmetric system. The present resu…
Superconducting excitations -- Bogoliubov quasiparticles -- are the quantum mechanical mixture of negatively charged electron (-e) and positively charged hole (+e). We propose a new observable for Angular Resolved Photoemission Spectroscopy (ARPES) studies that is the manifestation of the particle-hole entanglement of the superconducting quasiparticles. We call this observable a {\em Bogoliubov angle}. This angle measures the relative weight of particle and hole amplitude in the superconducting (Bogoliubov) quasiparticle. We show how this quantity can be measured by comparing the ratio of spec…
The thermal conductivity of the heavy-fermion superconductor CeCoIn_5 has been studied in a magnetic field rotating within the 2D planes. A clear fourfold symmetry of the thermal conductivity which is characteristic of a superconducting gap with nodes along the (+-pi,+-pi)-directions is resolved. The thermal conductivity measurement also reveals a first order transition at H_c2, indicating a Pauli limited superconducting state. These results indicate that the symmetry most likely belongs to d_{x^2-y^2}, implying that the anisotropic antiferromagnetic fluctuation is relevant to the superconduct…
We investigate the bulk orbital angular momentum in a two-dimensional time-reversal broken topological superconductor with the Rashba spin-orbit interaction, the Zeeman interaction, and the $s$-wave pairing potential. Prior to the topological phase transition, we find the crossover from $s$ wave to $p$ wave. For the large spin-orbit interaction, even in the topological phase, $L_z/N$ does not reach $-1/2$, which is the intrinsic value in chiral $p$-wave superconductors. Here $L_z$ and $N$ are the bulk orbital angular momentum and the total number of electrons at zero temperature, respectively.…
Unique properties of the optical activity in noncentrosymmetric superconductors: sum rule, missing area, and relation with the superconducting Edelstein effect
We have derived the so-called gap equation, which determines the upper critical magnetic field, perpendicular to conducting chains of a quasi-one-dimensional superconductor. By analyzing this equation at low temperatures, we have found that the calculated angular dependence of the upper critical magnetic field is qualitatively different than that in the so-called effective mass model. In particular, our theory predicts a non-analytical angular dependence of the upper critical magnetic field, $H_{c2}(0) - H_{c2}(α) \sim α^{3/2}$, when magnetic field is close to some special crystallographic axi…
A significant anisotropy of the magnetic-field driven superconductor-insulator transition is observed in thin films of amorphous indium-oxide. The anisotropy is largest for more disordered films which have a lower transition field. At higher magnetic field the anisotropy reduces and even changes sign beyond a sample specific and temperature independent magnetic field value. The data are consistent with the existence of more that one mechanism affecting transport at high magnetic fields.
The hole-doped cuprate high temperature superconductors enter the pseudogap regime as their superconducting critical temperature, $T_c$, falls with decreasing hole density. Experiments have probed this regime for over two decades, but we argue that decisive new information has emerged from recent X-ray scattering experiments (arXiv:1207.0915, arXiv:1206.4333, arXiv:1207.3667). The experiments observe incommensurate charge density wave fluctuations whose strength rises gradually over a wide temperature range above $T_c$, but then decreases as the temperature is lowered below $T_c$. We propose a…
Fil {\it et al.} has proposed an interesting experimental method to investigate vortex dynamics. Some preliminary results have been obtained. In this comment I discuss a few missing but strongly related theoretical models and experiments on Hall anomaly and Magnus force. I conclude that those missing literature can enhance the value of novel experimental method proposed in the commented 2006 Europhysics Letters by Fil {\it et al.}.
When a magnetic field is turned on, a superconducting body acquires an angular momentum in direction opposite to the applied field. This gyromagnetic effect has been established experimentally and is understood theoretically. However, the corresponding situation when a superconductor is cooled in a pre-existent field has not been examined. We argue that the conventional theory of superconductivity does not provide a prediction for the outcome of that experiment that does not violate fundamental laws of physics, either Lenz's law or conservation of angular momentum. The theory of hole supercond…
The pseudogap state of high temperature superconductors is a profound mystery. It has tantalizing evidence of a number of broken symmetry states, not necessarily conventional charge and spin density waves. Here we explore a class of more exotic density wave states characterized by topological properties observed in recently discovered topological insulators. We suggest that these rich topological density wave states deserve closer attention in not only high temperature superconductors but in other correlated electron states, as in heavy fermions.
Recent angular-resolved photoemission experiments on high-temperature superconductors are consistent with a phenomenological description of the normal state of these materials as Marginal Fermi Liquids. The experiments also provide constraints on microscopic theories
A key question in high temperature iron-based superconductivity is the mechanism by which the paired electrons minimize their strong mutual Coulomb repulsion. While electronically paired superconductors generally avoid the Coulomb interaction through the formation of nodal, higher angular momentum pairs, iron based superconductors appear to form singlet s-wave (s$^{\pm}$) pairs. By taking the orbital degrees of freedom of the iron atoms into account, here we argue that the s$^{\pm}$ state in these materials possesses internal d-wave structure, in which a relative d-wave ($L=2$) motion of the p…
The local quasiparticle spectra around the vortex core of a d-wave superconductor in the mixed state is studied by solving the lattice Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations self-consistently. It is shown that in addition to the zero-energy states, there also exist core states of high angular momentum. A nonmagnetic unitary impurity sitting at the core center is nondestructive to these core states and the zero-energy resonant state induced by itself is still visible in the local quasiparticle spectrum. The calculated imaging shows a fourfold ``star'' shape of the local density of states whose orientat…
The superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, of a ferromagnet (F) - superconductor (S) - ferromagnet trilayer depends on the mutual orientation of the magnetic moments of the F layers. This effect has been previously observed in F/S/F systems as a $T_c$ difference between parallel and antiparallel configurations of the F layers. Here we report measurements of $T_c$ in CuNi/Nb/CuNi trilayers as a function of the angle between the magnetic moments of the CuNi ferromagnets. The observed angular dependence of $T_c$ is in qualitative agreement with a F/S proximity theory that accounts for the…
Here we consider the universal heat conduction and the angular dependent thermal conductivity in the vortex state for a few nodal superconductors. We present the thermal conductivity as a function of impurity concentration and the angular dependent thermal conductivity in a few nodal superconductors. This provides further insight in the gap symmetry of superconductivity in Sr$_2$RuO$_4$ and UPd$_2$Al$_3$.
Overdoped high-temperature cuprate superconductors have been widely believed to be described by the physics of d-wave BCS-like superconductivity. However, recent measurements indicate that as the doping is increased, the superfluid density decreases smoothly to zero rather than increasing as expected by BCS theory in the absence of disorder. Here, we combine time-domain THz spectroscopy with kHz range mutual inductance measurements on the same overdoped La$_{2-x}$Sr$_{x}$CuO$_{4}$ films to determine both the superfluid and the uncondensed carrier density as a function of doping. A significant …
We consider the variation of the field-induced component of the specific heat $C({\bf H})$ with the direction of the applied field in $Fe-$pnictides within quasi-classical Doppler-shift approximation, with special emphasis to recent experiments on FeSe$_{0.4}$Te$_{0.6}$ [Zheng et al., arXiv:1004.2236]. We show that for extended $s-$wave gap with no nodes, $C({\bf H})$ has $\cos 4 ϕ$ component, where $ϕ$ is the angle between ${\bf H}$ and the direction between hole and electron Fermi surfaces. The maxima of $C({\bf H})$ are at $π/4$, $3π/4$, etc. if the applied field is smaller than $H_0 \leq 1…
We investigate the bulk orbital angular momentum (AM) in a two-dimensional hole-doped topological superconductor (SC) which is composed of a hole-doped semiconductor thin film, a magnetic insulator, and an $s$-wave SC and is characterized by the Chern number $C = -3$. In the topological phase, $L_z/N$ is strongly reduced from the intrinsic value by the non-particle-hole-symmetric edge states as in the corresponding chiral $f$-wave SCs when the spin-orbit interactions (SOIs) are small, while this reduction of $L_z/N$ does not work for the large SOIs. Here $L_z$ and $N$ are the bulk orbital AM a…
We report measurements of the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, in CoO/Co/Cu/Co/Nb multilayers as a function of the angle $α$ between the magnetic moments of the Co layers. Our measurements reveal that $T_c(α)$ is a nonmonotonic function, with a minimum near $α=π/{2}$. Numerical self-consistent solutions of the Bogoliubov - de Gennes equations quantitatively and accurately describe the behavior of $T_c$ as a function of $α$ and layer thicknesses in these superconductor / spin-valve heterostructures. We show that experimental data and theoretical evidence agree in relating $T_c(α)$…
We have investigated the electrical resistivity of the heavy fermion superconductor PrOs$_{4}$Sb$_{12}$ in the mixed state. We found unusual double minima in the flux-flow resistivity as a function of magnetic field below the upper critical field for the first time, indicating double peaks in the pinning force density ($F_{\rm P}$). Estimated $F_{\rm P}$ at the peak exhibits apparent dependence on applied field direction; composed of two-fold and four-fold symmetries mimicking the reported angular dependence of thermal conductivity ($κ$). The result is discussed in correlation with the double …
Anisotropy effects on flux pinning and flux flow are strongly effective in cuprate as well as iron-based superconductors due to their intrinsically layered crystallographic structure. However $\textrm{Fe(Se,Te)}$ thin films grown on $\textrm{CaF}_2$ substrate result less anisotropic with respect to all the other iron based superconductors. We present the first study on the angular dependence of the flux flow instability, which occurs in the flux flow regime as a current driven transition to the normal state at the instability point ($I^*$,$V^*$) in the current-voltage characteristics. The volt…
The Josephson effect between triplet and singlet superconductors is studied. Josephson current can flow between triplet and singlet superconductors due to the spin-orbit coupling in the spin-triplet superconductor but it is finite only when triplet superconductor has $L_z=-S_z=\pm 1$, where $L_z$ and $S_z$ are the perpendicular components of orbital angular momentum and spin angular momentum of the triplet Cooper pairs, respectively. The recently observed temperature and orientational dependence of the critical current through a Josephson junction between UPt$_3$ and Nb is investigated by cons…
Josephson effect in junctions between unconventional superconductors is studied theoretically within the model describing the effects of interface roughness. The particularly important issue of applicability of the frequently used Sigrist-Rice formula for Josephson current in d-wave superconductor / insulator / d-wave superconductor junctions is addressed. We show that although the SR formula is not applicable in the ballistic case, it works well for rough interfaces when the diffusive normal metal regions exist between the d-wave superconductor and the insulator. It is shown that the SR appro…
The intrinsic magnetic moment (IMM) and intrinsic angular momentum (IAM) of a chiral superconductor with $p$-wave symmetry on a two-dimensional square lattice are discussed on the basis of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equation. The the IMM and IAM are shown to be on the order of $μ_{\rm B}N$ and $\hbar N$, respectively, $N$ being the total number of particles, without an extra factor $(T_{\rm c}/T_{\rm F})^γ$ ($γ=1,2$), and parallel to the pair angular momentum. They arise from the current in the surface layer with a width on the order of the coherence length $ξ_{0}$, the size of Cooper pairs. How…
Superconductors have often been described as `giant atoms'. The simplest description of atoms that heralded their quantum understanding was proposed by Bohr in 1913. The Bohr atom starts from some simple assumptions and deduces that the angular momentum of the electron in Bohr orbits is quantized in integer units of $\hbar$. This remarkable result, which does not appear to be implicit in the assumptions of the model, can be interpreted as a `theoretical proof' of the model's validity to describe physical reality at some level. Similarly we point out here that from some simple assumptions it ca…
Impurity resonances observed by scanning tunneling spectroscopy in the superconducting state have been used to deduce properties of the underlying pure state. Here we study a longstanding puzzle associated with these measurements, the apparent extinction of these resonances for Ni and Zn impurities in large-gap regions of the inhomogeneous BSCCO superconductor. We calculate the effect of order parameter and hopping suppression near the impurity site, and find that these two effects are sufficient to explain the missing resonances in the case of Ni. There are several possible scenarios for the …
We calculate the temperature $T$ and angular $(θ,ϕ)$ dependence of the upper critical induction $B_{c2}(θ,ϕ,T)$ for parallel-spin superconductors with an axially symmetric $p$-wave pairing interaction pinned to the lattice and a dominant ellipsoidal Fermi surface (FS). For all FS anisotropies, the chiral Scharnberg-Klemm state $B_{c2}(θ,ϕ,T)$ exceeds that of the chiral Anderson-Brinkman-Morel state, and exhibits a kink at $θ=θ^{*}(T,ϕ)$, indicative of a first-order transition from its chiral, nodal-direction behavior to its non-chiral, antinodal-direction behavior. Applicability to Sr$_2$RuO$_…
We employ the Klemm-Clem transformations to map the equations of motion for the Green functions of a clean superconductor with a general ellipsoidal Fermi surface (FS) characterized by the effective masses $m_1, m_2$, and $m_3$ in the presence of an arbitrarily directed magnetic induction ${\bm B}=B(\sinθ\cosϕ,\sinθ\sinϕ,\cosθ)$ onto those of a spherical FS. We then obtain the transformed gap equation for a transformed pairing interaction $\tilde{V}(\hat{\tilde{\bm k}},\hat{\tilde{\bm k}}')$ appropriate for any orbital order parameter symmetry. We use these results to calculate the upper criti…
We investigate vortex structure and melting transition in very anisotropic layered superconductors at fields tilted with respect to the c-axis. We show that even a small in-plane field does not homogeneously tilt the vortex lattice but, instead, penetrates inside the superconductor in the form of Josephson vortices (JVs) similar to the Meissner state. At high c-axis magnetic field the phase field of the JV is built up from the phase perturbations created by displacements of pancake vortices. The crossing-lattices ground state leads to linear dependencies of the melting field and melting temper…
Even-parity interorbital spin-triplet pairing emerges as an intriguing candidate in multiorbital superconductors with significant Hund's and spin-orbit coupling. Within such a state, the pairing is dominated by the intraband pseudospin-singlet component via the spin-orbit coupling, distinguishing it from a pure spin triplet and motivating the name, shadowed triplet. With atomic spin-orbit coupling, it was shown that this pairing exhibits an anisotropic $s$-wave character, while higher angular momentum pairing symmetries such as $d$- or $g$-wave have been proposed based on phenomenological anal…
We establish the Berry-phase formulas for the angular momentum (AM) and the Hall viscosity (HV) to investigate chiral superconductors (SCs) in two and three dimensions. The AM is defined by the temporal integral of the anti-symmetric momentum current induced by an adiabatic deformation, while the HV is defined by the symmetric momentum current induced by the symmetric torsional electric field. Without suffering from the system size or geometry, we obtain the macroscopic AM $L_z = \hbar m N_0/2$ at zero temperature in full-gap chiral SCs, where $m$ is the magnetic quantum number and $N_0$ is th…
We show that recent measurements of the magnetic field dependence of the magnetization, specific heat and resistivity of overdoped $T_c \sim 17K$ $Tl_{2}Ba_{2}CuO_{6+δ}$ in the vicinity of the superconducting $H_{c2}$ imply that the vortex viscosity is anomalously small and that the material studied is inhomogeneous with small, a few hundred $Å$, regions in which the local $T_{c}$ is much higher than the bulk $T_{c}$. The anomalously small vortex viscosity can be derived from a microscopic model in which the quasiparticle lifetime varies dramatically around the Fermi surface, being small every…
We examine the Meissner state nonlinear electrodynamic effects on the field and angular dependence of the low temperature penetration depth, $λ$, of superconductors in several kinds of unconventional pairing states, with nodes or deep minima (``quasinodes'') in the energy gap. Our calculations are prompted by the fact that, for typical unconventional superconducting material parameters, the predicted size of these effects for $λ$ exceeds the available experimental precision for this quantity by a much larger factor than for others. We obtain expressions for the nonlinear component of the penet…
We show that the Josephson effect between triplet superconductors is sensitive to the relative orientation of the d-vectors across the junction. In addition, we point out that the temperature and angular dependence of the Josephson effect can help distinguish between different order parameter symmetries. We discuss coherent and incoherent tunneling processes, and the role of surface bound states within the framework of non-local lattice Bogoliubov-deGennes equations.
To determine the superconducting gap function of YNi2B2C, we calculate the local density of states (LDOS) around a single vortex core with the use of Eilenberger theory and the band structure calculated by local density approximation assuming various gap structures with point-nodes at different positions. We also calculate the angular-dependent heat capacity in the vortex state on the basis of the Doppler-Shift method. Comparing our results with the STM/STS experiment, the angular-dependent heat capacity and thermal conductivity, we propose the gap-structure of YNi2B2C, which has the point-nod…
The electronic structure of a vortex pinned by an insulating columnar inclusion in a type-II chiral $p_x \pm i p_y$ superconductor is studied within the Bogolubov-de Gennes theory. The structure of the anomalous spectral branch is shown to be strongly affected by the mutual orientations of the angular momenta of the center of mass and the relative motion of the two electrons in the Cooper pair. Being only slightly perturbed by the scattering at the defect for the zero sum of these angular momenta the anomalous spectral branch appears to change dramatically in the absence of such compensation. …
We propose a dynamical explanation of the Meissner effect in superconductors and predict the existence of a spin Meissner effect: that a macroscopic spin current flows within a London penetration depth $λ_L$ of the surface of superconductors in the absence of applied external fields, with carrier density = the superfluid density and carrier speed $v=\hbar/(4m_eλ_L$) ($m_e=$bare electron mass). The two members of a Cooper pair circulate in orbits of radius $2λ_L$ in opposite direction and the spin current in a Cooper pair has orbital angular momentum $\hbar$. Our description also provides a 'ge…
Anisotropic Fe K-edge and As K-edge X-ray absorption near edge spectrum (XANES) measurements on superconducting (T_c = 52 K) (Sm_{0.95}La_{0.05})FeAs(O_{0.85}F_{0.15}) field-aligned microcrystalline powder are presented. The angular dependence of Fe pre-edge peak (dipole transition of Fe-1s electrons to Fe-3d/As-4p hybrid bands) relative to the tetragonal ab-plane of aligned powder indicates larger density of state (DOS) along the c-axis, and is consistent with the LDA band structure calculation. The anisotropic Fe K-edge spectra exhibit a chemical shift to lower energy compared to FeO which a…
We employ the Schr{ö}dinger-Dirac method generalized to an ellipsoidal effective mass anisotropy in order to treat the spin and orbital effective mass anisotropies self consistently, which is important when Pauli-limiting effects on the upper critical field characteristic of singlet superconductivity are present. By employing the Klemm-Clem transformations to map the equations of motion into isotropic form, we then calculate the upper critical magnetic induction $B_{c2}(θ, ϕ, T)$ at arbitrary directions and temperatures $T$ for isotropic $s$-wave and for anisotropic $d_{x^2-y^2}$-wave supercon…
We consider tunnel microrefrigerators at low temperature. There is a number of experimental studies performed on microrefrigeration in tunneling superconductor--normal metal (SN) structures. Related to these experiments, only the electron subsystem has been considered theoretically. Independently, the phonon deficit effect has been studied a while ago in superconductor-superconductor tunnel junctions. It can be regarded as a possible prototype scheme for superconducting microrefrigerators. We try to provide the missing link between experiments on the SN tunnel junction refrigerators and the th…
We explore in detail the angular dependent vortex dynamics in type II superconductors with aligned columnar defects introduced by irradiation with very energetic heavy-ions. We use dc magnetization measurements deep in the vortex solid phase, and ac susceptibility near the solid-liquid transition. We show that aligned columnar defects are an excellent tool to test models for vortex dynamics, particularly if they are tilted with respect to the crystallographic axes, so their effects can be easily distinguished from those arising from mass anisotropy, sample geometry, twin boundaries and intrins…
We present studies of the dc magnetization of thin platelike samples of the isotropic type II superconductor PbTl(10%), as a function of the angle between the normal to the sample and the applied magnetic field ${\bf H}$. We determine the magnetization vector ${\bf M}$ by measuring the components both parallel and normal to ${\bf H}$ in a SQUID magnetometer, and we further decompose it in its reversible and irreversible contributions. The behavior of the reversible magnetization is well understood in terms of minimization of the free energy taking into account geometrical effects. In the mixed…
Supposing the spin-triplet superconducting state of Sr$_2$RuO$_4$, the spin-orbit (SO) coupling associated with relative motion in Cooper pairs is calculated by extending the method for the dipole-dipole coupling given by Leggett in the superfluid $^{3}$He. It is shown that the SO coupling works only in the equal-spin pairing (ESP) state to make the pair angular momentum $\hbar{\vec L}$ and the pair spin angular momentum ${\rm i}{\vec d}\times{\vec d}^{*}$ parallel with each other. The SO coupling gives rise to the internal Josephson effect in a chiral ESP state as in superfluid A-phase of $^3…
Quasiparticle states around a single vortex in a $p_x\pm i p_y$-wave superconductor are studied on the basis of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes (BdG) theory, where both charge and current screenings are taken into account. Due to the violation of time reversal symmetry, there are two types of vortices which are distinguished by their winding orientations relative to the angular momentum of the chiral Cooper pair. The BdG solution shows that the charges of the two types of vortices are quite different, reflecting the rotating Cooper pair of the $p_x\pm i p_y$-wave paring state.
The momentum dependence of the nematic order parameter is an important ingredient in the microscopic description of iron-based high-temperature superconductors. While recent reports on FeSe indicate that the nematic order parameter changes sign between electron and hole bands, detailed knowledge is still missing for other compounds. Combining angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) with uniaxial strain tuning, we measure the nematic band splitting in both FeSe and BaFe$_2$As$_2$ without interference from either twinning or magnetic order. We find that the nematic order parameter exhi…
The magnetization vector \vec M was measured in the reversible region of the mixed state of a high quality Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 single crystal as a function of temperature and for different magnetic field amplitudes and orientations. These measurements allowed to study the \vec M components perpendicular and parallel to the CuO2 layers (Mperp and Mpara, respectively) under arbitrary values for the corresponding components of the applied magnetic field, Hperp and Hpara. For temperatures close to Tc (in the critical fluctuation region) we observed Mperp(Hperp,Hpara) Mperp(Hperp,0) and Mpara(Hperp,Hpa…
We have analysed the effect of intrinsic doping inhomogeneity and the presence of stripes in high-T_c superconductors on coupling λby using a simple analytically solvable model with an angular dependent λ(ϕ) represented by a square-well form. We have found that the introduction of the Coulomb repulsion λ_C, increasing the ''contrast'' | λ| + | λ_C |, or the depth of the angular modulation of λ(ϕ), leads to a remarkable enhancement of T_c. This effect can be optimized by combining attractive (λ<0) and repulsive (λ>0) interactions along stripes and perpendicular to them.
Recently it was discovered that the ground state orbital angular momentum in two-dimensional chiral superfluids with pairing symmetry $(p_x+ip_y)^ν$ depends on the winding number $ν$ in a striking manner. The ground state value for the $ν=1$ case is $L_z=\hbar N/2$ as expected by counting the Cooper pairs, while a dramatic cancellation takes place for $ν>1$. The origin of the cancellation is associated with the topological edge states that appear in a finite geometry and give rise to a spectral asymmetry. Here we study the reduction of orbital angular momentum for different potential profiles …
The origin of spontaneous electronic nematic ordering provides important information for understanding iron-based superconductors. Here, we analyze a scenario where the $d_{xy}$ orbital strongly contributes to nematic ordering in FeSe. We show that the addition of $d_{xy}$ nematicity to a pure $d_{xz}/d_{yz}$ order provides a natural explanation for the unusual Fermi surface and correctly reproduces the strongly anisotropic momentum dependence of the superconducting gap. We predict a Lifshitz transition of an electron pocket mediated by temperature and sulphur doping, whose signatures we discu…
Magnetic impurity chains on top of conventional superconductors are promising platforms to realize Majorana modes. Iron-based high-temperature superconductors are known in the vicinity of magnetic states due to the strong Hund's coupling in iron atoms. Here we propose that the line defects with missing Te/Se anions in Fe(Se,Te) superconductors provide the realization of intrinsic antiferromagnetic(AFM) chains with Rashba spin-orbit coupling. Against conventional wisdom, Majorana zero modes (MZMs) can be robustly generated at these AFM chain ends. These results can consistently explain the rece…
The temperature and angular dependencies of the resistive upper critical magnetic field $B_{c2}$ reveal a dimensional crossover of the superconducting state in the highly anisotropic misfit-layer single crystal of (LaSe)$_{1.14}$(NbSe$_2$) with the critical temperature $T_c$ of 1.23 K. The temperature dependence of the upper critical field $B_{c2\parallel ab}(T)$ for a field orientation along the conducting $(ab)$-planes displays a characteristic upturn at 1.1 K and below this temperature the angular dependence of $B_{c2}$ has a cusp around the parallel field orientation. Both these typical fe…
Antiferromagnetic (AFM) order and a spatial order peculiar to Fulde-Ferrell-Larkin-Ovchinnikov (FFLO) states, previously indicated in the quasi two-dimensional d-wave superconductors CeCoIn_5 with strong paramagnetic pair breaking (PPB) in a magnetic-field parallel to the basal plane, are considered in the field configurations tilted from the basal plane within an approach assuming that the wavelength of the FFLO modulation is relatively long. It is demonstrated that, with increasing the tilt angle, both the AFM and FFLO orders are gradually suppressed, and that disappearance of the AFM order …
It is generally believed that the laws of thermodynamics govern superconductivity as an equilibrium state of matter. Here we point out that within the conventional BCS-London description of the normal-superconductor transition in the presence of a magnetic field, the transition cannot be reversible, in contradiction with the thermodynamic description and with experiments. This indicates that the conventional theory of superconductivity is internally inconsistent. We argue that to describe a reversible transition it is necessary to assume that charge transfer occurs across the normal-supercondu…
