Recolliding electrons are responsible for many of the interesting phenomena observed in the interaction of strong laser fields with atoms and molecules. We show that in multielectron targets such as C60 a new important recollision pathway opens up: the returning electron may excite collective modes even if the laser frequency is far off-resonant. We formulate a simple analytical theory which predicts that the recollision-induced excitation of collective modes should dominate over the "usual" harmonic generation yield at 800nm wavelength. In this case the tomographic imaging of complex multielectron systems may be obscured. We employ a time-dependent density functional model of C60 and show that with increasing laser wavelength the dynamics becomes more and more single active electron-like, suggesting that long wavelengths are to be preferred for imaging purposes.
We investigate the dynamics of electron-electron recollisions in the double ionization of atoms in strong laser fields. The statistics of recollisions can be reformulated in terms of an area-preserving map from the observation that the outer electron is driven by the laser field to kick the remaining core electrons periodically. The phase portraits of this map reveals the dynamics of these recollisions in terms of their probability and efficiency.
Nonsequential multiple ionization of atoms in intense laser fields is initiated by a recollision between an electron, freed by tunneling, and its parent ion. Following recollision, the initial electron shares its energy with several bound electrons. We use a classical model based on rapid electron thermalization to interpret recent experiments. For neon, good agreement with the available data is obtained with an upper bound of 460 attoseconds for the thermalization time.
Increasing ellipticity usually suppresses the recollision probability drastically. In contrast, we report on a recollision channel with large return energy and a substantial probability, regardless of the ellipticity. The laser envelope plays a dominant role in the energy gained by the electron, and in the conditions under which the electron comes back to the core. We show that this recollision channel eciently triggers multiple ionization with an elliptically polarized pulse.
We examine correlated electron and doubly charged ion momentum spectra from strong field double ionization of Neon employing intense elliptically polarized laser pulses. An ellipticity-dependent asymmetry of correlated electron and ion momentum distributions has been observed. Using a 3D semiclassical model, we demonstrate that our observations reflect the sub-cycle dynamics of the recollision process. Our work reveals a general physical picture for recollision-impact double ionization with elliptical polarization, and demonstrates the possibility of ultrafast control of the recollision dynami…
We examine the nature and statistical properties of electron-electron collisions in the recollision process in a strong laser field. The separation of the double ionization yield into sequential and nonsequential components leads to a bell-shaped curve for the nonsequential probability and a monotonically rising one for the sequential process. We identify key features of the nonsequential process and connect our findings in a simplified model which reproduces the knee shape for the probability of double ionization with laser intensity and associated trends.
Laser-induced nuclear recollisions following $α$ decay in the presence of an intense laser field are investigated theoretically. We show that while an intense optical laser does not influence notably the tunneling rate in $α$ decay, it can completely change the $α$ particle spectrum. For intensities of $10^{22}-10^{23}$ W/cm$^{2}$, the field is strong enough to induce recollisions between the emitted $α$ particle and the daughter nucleus. The energy gained by the $α$ particle in the field can reach 20 MeV and suffice to trigger several types of nuclear reactions on a femtosecond time scale. Si…
We theoretically investigate correlated electron dynamics in high-harmonic generation (HHG), using all-electron \emph{ab initio} simulations for three-dimensional real alkali-metal atoms. The resulting harmonic spectra exhibit a plateau extended beyond the usual cutoff and a prominent resonance peak above the plateau. These remarkable features arise from the cation response dramatically enhanced by laser-induced electron recollision, which is a key process of attosecond science. This demonstrates that high-harmonic spectroscopy provides new possibilities to explore dynamical electron correlati…
We introduce soft recollisions in laser-matter interaction. They are characterized by the electron missing the ion upon recollision in contrast to the well-known head-on collisions responsible for high-harmonic generation or above-threshold ionization. We demonstrate analytically that soft recollisions can cause a bunching of photo-electron energies through which a series of low-energy peaks emerges in the electron yield along the laser polarization axis. This peak sequence is universal, it does not depend on the binding potential, and is found below an excess energy of one fifth of the ponder…
Two oppositely charged particles created within a microscopic space-time region can be separated, accelerated over a much larger distance, and brought to a recollision by a laser field. Consequently, new reactions become feasible, where the energy absorbed by the particles is efficiently released. By investigating the laser-dressed polarization operator, we identify a new contribution describing high-energy recollisions experienced by an electron-positron pair generated by pure light when a gamma photon impinges on an intense, linearly polarized laser pulse. The energy absorbed in the recollis…
Measuring the delay for an electron to emerge from different states is one of the major achievements of attosecond science. This delay can have two origins - the electron wave packet is reshaped during departure by the electrostatic field of the ionizing medium or it is modified by dynamic interaction with the remaining electrons. Most experiments have observed the former, but confirmation requires a complex calculation. A direct measurement of multielectron dynamics is needed. Photo-recombination - the inverse of photoionization - occurs naturally during electron recollision and can be measur…
The tomographic imaging of arbitrary molecular orbitals via high-order harmonic generation requires that electrons recollide from one direction only. Within a semi-classical model, we show that extremely short phase-stabilized laser pulses offer control over the momentum distribution of the returning electrons. By adjusting the carrier-envelope phase, recollisions can be forced to occur from mainly one side, while retaining a broad energy spectrum. The signatures of the semi-classical distributions are observed in harmonic spectra obtained by numerical solution of the time-dependent Schrödinge…
We theoretically investigate high-harmonic generation in hexagonal boron nitride with linearly polarized laser pulses. We show that imperfect recollisions between electron-hole pairs in the crystal give rise to an electron-hole-pair polarization energy that leads to a double-peak structure in the subcycle emission profiles. An extended recollision model (ERM) is developed that allows for such imperfect recollisions, as well as effects related to Berry connections, Berry curvatures, and transition-dipole phases. The ERM illuminates the distinct spectrotemporal characteristics of harmonics emitt…
We use classical electron ensembles and the aligned-electron approximation to examine the effect of laser pulse duration on the dynamics of strong-field double ionization. We cover the range of intensities $10^{14}-10^{16} W/cm^2$ for the laser wavelength 780 nm. The classical scenario suggests that the highest rate of recollision occurs early in the pulse and promotes double ionization production in few-cycle pulses. In addition, the purely classical ensemble calculation predicts an exponentially decreasing recollision rate with each subsequent half cycle. We confirm the exponential behavior …
Consensus has been reached that recollision, as the most important post-tunneling process, is responsible for nonsequential double ionization process in intense infrared laser field, however, its effect has been restricted to interaction between the first ionized electron and the residual univalent ion so far. Here we identify the key role of recollision between the second ionized electron and the divalent ion in the below-threshold nonsequential double ionization process by introducing a Coulomb-corrected quantum-trajectories method, which enables us to well reproduce the experimentally obser…
Extreme ultraviolet (XUV) attosecond pulses, generated by a process known as laser-induced electron recollision, are a key ingredient for attosecond metrology, providing a tool to precisely initiate and probe sub-femtosecond dynamics in the microcosms of atoms, molecules and solids[1]. However, with the current technology, extending attosecond metrology to scrutinize the dynamics of the inner-shell electrons is a challenge, that is because of the lower efficiency in generating the required soft x-ray \hbarω>300 eV attosecond bursts and the lower absorption cross-sections in this spectral range…
Previously we proposed a new approach of exciting the $^{229}$Th nucleus using laser-driven electron recollision [W. Wang et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 127, 052501 (2021)]. The current article is aimed to elaborate the method by explaining further theoretical details and presenting extended new results. The method has also been improved by adopting the electronic excitation cross sections calculated recently by Tkalya [E. V. Tkalya, Phys. Rev. Lett. 124, 242501 (2020)]. The new cross sections are obtained from Dirac distorted-wave calculations instead of from Dirac plane-wave calculations as we use…
Using a three-dimensional quasiclassical technique we explore molecular double ionization by a linearly polarized, infrared (800 nm) and ultrashort (6 fs) laser pulse. We first focus on intensities corresponding to the tunneling regime and identify the main ionization mechanisms in this regime. We devise a selection of observables, such as, the correlated momenta and the sum of the momenta parallel to the laser field as a function of the inter-electronic angle of escape where all the main mechanisms have distinct traces. Secondly, we address intensities above but close to the over-the-barrier …
Photoelectron spectra obtained from the ab initio solution of the time-dependent Schrödinger equation can be in striking disagreement with predictions by the strong-field approximation (SFA) not only at low energy but also around twice the ponderomotive energy where the transition from the direct to the rescattered electrons is expected. In fact, the relative enhancement of the ionization probability compared to the SFA in this regime can be several orders of magnitude. We show for which laser and target parameters such an enhancement occurs and for which the SFA prediction is qualitatively go…
Fully accounting for non-dipole effects in the electron dynamics, double ionization is studied for He driven by a near-infrared laser field and for Xe driven by a mid-infrared laser field. Using a three-dimensional semiclassical model, the average sum of the electron momenta along the propagation direction of the laser field is computed. This sum is found to be an order of magnitude larger than twice the average electron momentum along the propagation direction of the laser field in single ionization. Moreover, the average sum of the electron momenta in double ionization is found to be maximum…
We investigate the physical processes in which an electron, upon return to its parent ion, promotes a second electron to an excited state, from which it subsequently tunnels. Employing the strong-field approximation and saddle-point methods, we perform a detailed analysis of the dynamics of the two electrons, in terms of quantum orbits, and delimit constraints for their momentum components parallel to the laser-field polarization. The kinetic energy of the first electron, upon return, exhibits a cutoff slightly lower than $10U_p$, where $U_p$ is the ponderomotive energy, as in rescattered abov…
We perform a detailed analysis of the recollision-excitation-tunneling (RESI) mechanism in laser-induced nonsequential double ionization (NSDI), in which the first electron, upon return, promotes a second electron to an excited state, from which it subsequently tunnels, based on the strong-field approximation. We show that the shapes of the electron momentum distributions carry information about the bound-state with which the first electron collides, the bound state to which the second electron is excited, and the type of electron-electron interaction. Furthermore, one may define a driving-fie…
We show that a family of key periodic orbits drive the recollision process in a strong circulary polarized laser field. These orbits, coined recolliding periodic orbits, exist for a wide range of parameters and their relative influence changes as the laser and atomic parameters are varied. We find the necessary conditions for recollision-driven nonsequential double ionization to occur. The outlined mechanism is universal in that it applies equally well beyond atoms: The internal structure of the target species plays a minor role in the recollision process.
We consider an electron in an atom driven by an infrared (IR) elliptically polarized laser field after its ionization by an ultrashort extreme ultraviolet (XUV) pulse. We find that, regardless of the atom species and the laser ellipticity, there exists XUV parameters for which the electron returns to its parent ion after ionizing, i.e., undergoes a recollision. This shows that XUV pulses trigger efficiently recollisions in atoms regardless of the ellipticity of the IR field. The XUV parameters for which the electron undergoes a recollision are obtained by studying the location of recolliding p…
Using a three-dimensional semiclassical model, we study double ionization for strongly-driven He fully accounting for magnetic field effects. For linearly and slightly elliptically polarized laser fields, we show that recollisions and the magnetic field combined act as a gate. This gate favors more transverse - with respect to the electric field - initial momenta of the tunneling electron that are opposite to the propagation direction of the laser field. In the absence of non-dipole effects, the transverse initial momentum is symmetric with respect to zero. We find that this asymmetry in the t…
The standard model of strong laser physics, the recollision scenario, omits the ionic core potential after tunneling. Strikingly, although the Coulomb interaction drives all stages of recollision, the maximum energy the electrons bring back to the core is found by ignoring it. We resolve this long-standing paradox by showing that this good agreement stems from a fortuitous cancellation at high intensities. Instead of the three step model, we find that the Coulomb interaction can be fully integrated into a purely classical scenario that explains recollisions without invoking tunneling.
When intense laser pulses release correlated electrons, the time delay between the ionizations may last more than one laser cycle. We show that this "Recollision-Excitation with Subsequent Ionization" pathway originates from the inner electron being promoted to a sticky region by a recollision where it is trapped for a long time before ionizing. We identify the mechanism which regulates this region, and predict oscillations in the double ionization yield with laser intensity.
Soft recollisions are laser-driven distant collisions of an electron with its parent ion. Such collisions may cause an energy bunching, since electrons with different initial drift momenta can acquire impacts, which exactly counterbalance these differences. The bunching generates a series of peaks in the photo-electron spectrum. We will show that this series could be uncovered peak-by-peak experimentally by means of phase-stabilized few-cycle pulses with increasing duration.
Double ionization processes triggered by intense linearly polarized laser fields have revealed the paramount role of electron-electron collisions. It has been shown that the correlated dynamics of such electronic collisions can be modeled by a two dimensional symplectic map which captures the bare essentials of the energy exchange processes occurring during a recollision between the two electrons. We investigate linear and nonlinear properties of this map and connect them to the dynamical organization of phase space and related statistical data
We present the results of the detailed experimental study of multiple ionization of Ne and Ar by 25 and 7 fs laser pulses. For Ne the highly correlated "instantaneous" emission of up to four electrons is triggered by a recollisional electron impact, whereas in multiple ionization of Ar different mechanisms, involving field ionization steps and recollision-induced excitations, play a major role. Using few-cycle pulses we are able to suppress those processes that occur on time scales longer than one laser cycle.
We present theoretical predictions of high-order harmonic generation (HHG) resulting from the interaction of short femtosecond laser pulses with metal nanotips. It has been demonstrated that high energy electrons can be generated using nanotips as sources; furthermore the recollision mechanism has been proven to be the physical mechanism behind this photoemission. If recollision exists, it should be possible to convert the laser-gained energy by the electron in the continuum in a high energy photon. Consequently the emission of harmonic radiation appears to be viable, although it has not been …
The role of nucleus in strong-field nonsequential double ionization of Ar atoms is investigated using three-dimensional classical ensembles. By adjusting the nuclear Coulomb potential, we can excellently reproduce the experimental correlated electron and ion momentum spectra with laser intensities above the recollision threshold [Phys. Rev. Lett. 93, 263001 (2004)] and below the recollision threshold [Phys. Rev. Lett. 101, 053001 (2008)] quantitatively. Analysis reveals the detailed electronic dynamics when the nuclear Coulomb attraction plays a key role in the recollision process of nonsequen…
By performing a joint theoretical and experimental investigation on the high-order above-threshold ionization (HATI) spectrum, the dominant role of the 3rd-return-recollision trajectories in the region near the cutoff due to the ionic Coulomb field is identified. This invalidates the key assumption adopted in the conventional laser-induced electron diffraction (LIED) approach that the 1st-returnrecollision trajectories dominate the spectrum according to strong field approximation (SFA). Our results show that the incident (return) electron beams produced by the 1st and 3rd returns possess disti…
With the classical three-dimensional ensemble model, we have investigated the microscopic recollision dynamics in nonsequential double ionization of helium by 800 nm laser pulses at 2.0 PW/cm^2. We demonstrate that the asymmetric energy sharing between the two electrons at recollision plays a decisive role in forming the experimentally observed V-shaped structure in the correlated longitudinal electron momentum spectrum at the high laser intensity [Phys. Rev. Lett. 99, 263003 (2007)]. This asymmetric energy sharing recollision leaves footprints on the transverse electron momentum spectra, whic…
We consider the motion of an electron in an atom subjected to a strong linearly polarized laser field. We identify the invariant structures organizing a very specific subset of trajectories, namely recollisions. Recollisions are trajectories which first escape the ionic core (i.e., ionize) and later return to this ionic core, for instance, to transfer the energy gained during the large excursion away from the core to bound electrons. We consider the role played by the directions transverse to the polarization direction in the recollision process. We compute the family of two-dimensional invari…
We studied the recollision dynamics between the electrons and D$_2^+$ ions following the tunneling ionization of D$_2$ molecules in an intense short pulse laser field. The returning electron collisionally excites the D$_2^+$ ion to excited electronic states from there D$_2^+$ can dissociate or be further ionized by the laser field, resulting in D$^+$ + D or D$^+$ + D$^+$, respectively. We modeled the fragmentation dynamics and calculated the resulting kinetic energy spectrum of D$^+$ to compare with recent experiments. Since the recollision time is locked to the tunneling ionization time which…
We examine the attosecond electron recollision dissociation of D2+ recently demonstrated experimentally [H. Niikura et al., Nature (London) 421, 826 (2003)] from a coherent control perspective. In this process, a strong laser field incident on D2 ionizes an electron, accelerates the electron in the laser field to eV energies, and then drives the electron to recollide with the parent ion, causing D2+ dissociation. A number of results are demonstrated. First, a full dimensional Strong Field Approximation (SFA) model is constructed and shown to be in agreement with the original experiment. This i…
We show that electrons recolliding with the ionic core upon tunnel ionization of noble gas atoms driven by a strong circularly polarized laser field in combination with a counter-rotating second harmonic are spin polarized and that their degree of polarization depends strongly on the recollision time. Spin polarization arises as a consequence of (1) entanglement between the recolliding electron and the ion, and (2) sensitivity of ionization to the sense of electron rotation in the initial state. We demonstrate that one can engineer the degree of spin polarization as a function of time by tunin…
The interaction of intense mid-infrared laser fields with atoms and molecules leads to a range of new opportunities, from the production of bright, coherent radiation in the soft x-ray range to imaging molecular structures and dynamics with attosecond temporal and sub-angstrom spatial resolution. However, all these effects, which rely on laser-driven recollision of an electron removed by the strong laser field and the parent ion, suffer from the rapidly increasing role of the magnetic field component of the driving pulse: the associated Lorentz force pushes the electrons off course in their ex…
A new pathway of strong laser field induced ionization of an atom is identified which is based on recollisions under the tunneling barrier. With an amended strong field approximation, the interference of the direct and the under-the-barrier recolliding quantum orbits are shown to induce a measurable shift of the peak of the photoelectron momentum distribution. The scaling of the momentum shift is derived relating the momentum shift to the tunneling delay time according to the Wigner concept. This allows to extend the Wigner concept for the quasistatic tunneling time delay into the nonadiabatic…
The probability of multiple ionization of krypton by 50 femtosecond circularly polarized laser pulses, independent of the optical focal geometry, has been obtained for the first time. The excellent agreement over the intensity range 10 TWcm-2 to 10 PWcm-2 with the recent predictions of A. S. Kornev et al [Phys. Rev. A v.68, art.043414 (2003)] provides the first experimental confirmation that non-recollisional electronic excitation can occur in strong field ionization. This is particularly true for higher stages of ionization, when the laser intensity exceeds 1 PWcm-2 as the energetic departure…
Accessing precisely to the phase variation of electronic wave-packet (EWP) provides unprecedented spatiotemporal information of microworld. A radial interference pattern at near-zero energy has been widely observed in experiments of strong-field photoionization. However, the underlying physical picture of this interference pattern is still under debate. Here we report an experimental and theoretical investigation of this low-energy interference structure (LEIS) in mid-infrared laser fields. We clarify that the LEIS arises due to the soft-recollision mechanism, which was previously found to pla…
We study the double ionization of atoms subjected to circularly polarized (CP) laser pulses. We analyze two fundamental ionization processes: the sequential (SDI) and non-sequential (NSDI) double ionization in the light of the rotating frame (RF) which naturally embeds nonadiabatic effects in CP pulses. We use and compare two adiabatic approximations: The adiabatic approximation in the laboratory frame (LF) and the adiabatic approximation in the RF. The adiabatic approximation in the RF encapsulates the energy variations of the electrons on subcycle timescales happening in the LF and this, by …
It was already experimentally demonstrated that high-energy electrons can be generated using metal nanotips as active media. In addition, it has been theoretically proven that the high-energy tail of the photoemitted electrons is intrinsically linked to the recollision phenomenon. Through this recollision process it is also possible to convert the energy gained by the laser-emitted electron in the continuum in a coherent XUV photon. It means the emission of harmonic radiation appears to be feasible, although it has not been experimentally demonstrated hitherto till now. In this paper, we emplo…
Real-space picture of electron recollision with the parent ion guides our understanding of the highly nonlinear response of atoms and molecules to intense low-frequency laser fields. It is also among several leading contestants for the dominant mechanism of high harmonic generation (HHG) in solids, where it is typically viewed in the momentum space, as the recombination of the conduction band electron with the valence band hole, competing with another HHG mechanism, the strong-field driven Bloch oscillations. In this work, we use numerical simulations to directly test and confirm the real-spac…
We present a theoretical study of the wave packet dynamics of the H$_2^+$ molecular ion in plasmon-enhanced laser fields. Such fields may be produced, for instance, when metallic nano-structures are illuminated by a laser pulse of moderated intensity. Their main property is that they vary in space on nanometer scales. We demonstrate that the spatial inhomogeneous character of these plasmonic fields leads to an enhancement of electron localization, an instrumental phenomenon that controls molecular fragmentation. We suggest that the charge-imbalance induced by the surface-plasmon resonance near…
Modern intense ultrafast pulsed lasers generate an electric field of sufficient strength to permit tunnel ionization of the valence electrons in atoms. This process is usually treated as a rapid succession of isolated events, in which the states of the remaining electrons are neglected. Such electronic interactions are predicted to be weak, the exception being recollision excitation and ionization caused by linearly-polarized radiation. In contrast, it has recently been suggested that intense field ionization may be accompanied by a two-stage `shake-up' reaction. Here we report a unique combin…
Brunel harmonics appear in the optical response of an atom in process of laser-induced ionization, when the electron leaves the atom and is accelerated in the strong optical field. In contrast to recollision-based harmonics, the Brunel mechanism does not require the electron returning to the core. Here we show that in the presence of a strong ionizing terahertz (THz) field, even a weak driving field at the optical frequencies allow for generating Brunel harmonics effectively. The strong ionizing THz pump suppresses recollisions, making Brunel dominant in a wide spectral range. High-order Brune…
High Harmonic Generation (HHG) creates coherent high frequency radiation via the process of strong field ionization followed by recombination. Recently, a complementary approach based on Frustrated Tunnel Ionization (FTI) was demonstrated (Nature Photonics 12, 620 (2018)). It uses spectrally separated peaks created by lower quantum number Rydberg states to produce coherent extreme ultraviolet (EUV) light. While much is understood about enhancing emission from HHG by controlling recombining electron trajectories, relatively little is known about controlling the quantum number distribution of Ry…
We report a novel experimental technique for the comparison of ionization processes in ultrafast laser pulses irrespective of pulse ellipticity. Multiple ionization of xenon by 50 fs 790 nm, linearly and circularly polarized laser pulses is observed over the intensity range 10 TW/cm^2 to 10 PW/cm^2 using Effective Intensity Matching (EIM), which is coupled with Intensity Selective Scanning (ISS) to recover the geometry-independent probability of ionization. Such measurements, made possible by quantifying diffraction effects in the laser focus, are compared directly to theoretical predictions o…
Using a three-dimensional semiclassical method, we theoretically investigate frustrated double ionization (FDI) of Ar atoms subjected to strong laser fields. The double-hump photoelectron momentum distribution generated from FDI observed in a recent experiment [S. Larimian et al., Phys. Rev. Research 2, 013021 (2020)] is reproduced by our simulation. We confirm that the observed spectrum is due to recollision. The laser intensity dependence of FDI is investigated. We reveal that the doubly excited states of Ar atoms and excited states of Ar+ are the dominant pathways for producing FDI at relat…
We theoretically investigate high-order harmonic generation (HHG) in Rydberg atoms driven by spatially inhomogeneous laser fields, induced, for instance, by plasmonic enhancement. It is well known that the laser intensity should to exceed certain threshold in order to generate HHG, when noble gas atoms in their ground state are used as an active medium. One way to enhance the coherent light coming from a conventional laser oscillator is to take advantage of the amplification obtained by the so-called surface plasmon polaritons, created when a low intensity laser field is focused onto a metalli…
Small parts of the electronic wavepacket of a multiple charged ion may still tunnel through the high Coulomb barrier for a sufficiently intense laser field of $10^{15}W/cm^2$ and higher. Solving numerically the corresponding Schrödinger equation we find that the periodic recollisions of such a wavepacket in the oscillating high power laser field will give rise to coherent X-ray radiation in the multiple keV regime, i.e. substantially higher than predicted or observed before.
Physical mechanisms of electron emission from fibre optic nanotips, namely, tunnelling, multi-photon, and thermionic emission, either prevent fast switching or require intense laser fields. Time-resolved electron emission from nano-sized sources finds applications ranging from material characterisation to fundamental studies of quantum coherence. We present a nano-sized electron source capable of fast-switching (<1 ns) that can be driven with low-power femtosecond lasers. The physical mechanism that can explain emission at low laser power is surface plasmon enhanced above-threshold photoemissi…
We perform a detailed analysis of the importance of causality within the strong-field approximation and the steepest descent framework for the recollision-excitation with subsequent tunneling ionization (RESI) pathway in laser-induced nonsequential double ionization (NSDI). In this time-delayed pathway, an electron returns to its parent ion, and, by recolliding with the core, gives part of its kinetic energy to excite a second electron at a time $t^{\prime}$. The second electron then reaches the continuum at a later time $t$ by tunneling ionization. We show that, if $t^{\prime}$ and $t$ are co…
We find that Coulomb focusing persists even when the Coulomb field is barely noticeable compared with the laser field. Delayed recollisions proliferate in this regime and bring back energy slightly above the 3.17 U_p high-harmonic cutoff, in stark contradiction with the Strong Field Approximation. We investigate the nonlinear-dynamical phase space structures which underlie this dynamics. It is found that the energetic delayed recollisions are organized by a reduced number of periodic orbits and their invariant manifolds.
The collision-ionization mechanism of nonsequential double ionization (NSDI) process in IR+XUV two-color laser fields [\PRA \textbf{93}, 043417 (2016)] has been investigated by us recently. Here we extend this work to study the collision-excitation-ionization (CEI) mechanism of NSDI processes in the two-color laser fields with different laser conditions. It is found that the CEI mechanism makes a dominant contribution to the NSDI as the XUV photon energy is smaller than the ionization threshold of the He$^+$ ion, and the momentum spectrum shows complex interference patterns and symmetrical str…
We theoretically study frustrated double ionization (FDI) of atoms subjected to intense circularly polarized laser pulses using a three-dimensional classical model. We find a novel "knee" structure of FDI probability as a function of intensity, which is similar to the intensity dependence of nonsequential double ionization probability. The observation of FDI is more favourable when using targets with low ionization potentials and short driving laser wavelengths. This is attributed to the crucial role of recollision therein, which can be experimentally inferred from the photoelectron momentum d…
The terahertz (THz) generation in a dual-color field was investigated experimentally by precisely controlling the relative time delay $τ$ and polarization $θ$ of dual-color lasers, where the accompanying third-harmonic generation (THG) is employed to determine $τ$ up to the sub-wavelength accuracy. An anticorrelation of the yields between THz and THG with $τ$ was displayed. Compared with the theoretical simulations, the experimental results reveal that the continuum-continuum transitions of the released electron after single-atom ionization are the dominating mechanism for THz generation, whic…
