Extensive Monte Carlo simulations are performed to analyze a recent neutron diffraction experiment on a distorted triangular lattice compound RbCoBr$_3$. We consider a spin-lattice model, where both spin and lattice are Ising variables. This model explains well successive magnetic and dielectric transitions observed in the experiment. The exchange interaction parameters and the spin-lattice coupling are estimated. It is found that the spin-lattice coupling is important to explain the slow growth of a ferrimagnetic order. The present simulations were made possible by developing a new Monte Carlo algorithm, which accelerates slow Monte Carlo dynamics of quasi-one-dimensional frustrated systems.
We have modeled magneto-dielectric phase transitions in ABX$_3$-type layered triangular lattice compounds. The model consists of a spin system (magnetic transition) and a lattice system (dielectric transition). Magnetic exchange interactions are supposed to change with a relative positionbetween two spins. This assumption produces an effective coupling between the lattice and the spin. Applying the nonequilibrium relaxation method, we have found that a simultaneous magneto-dielectric phase transition occurs when energy scales of the spin part and the lattice part coincide. An intermediate phas…
The electric and thermo-magneto-electric transport of the prototypical ferromagnetic transition-metal alloy system fcc-Co$_x$Pd$_{1-x}$ has been investigated on the basis of Kubo's linear response formalism. The results for the full electric conductivity tensor allow to discuss the spin-orbit induced anisotropic magneto-resistance (AMR) and the anomalous Hall effect (AHE). These are complemented by results for the corresponding thermo-magneto-electric transport properties anisotropy of the Seebeck effect (ASE) and anomalous Nernst effect (ANE). The relation between the respective response coef…
We demonstrate that by combining permanent electric and magnetic moments in particles, it is possible to realize a new type of medium that allows for a cross-correlation between electric and magnetic properties of matter, known as magnetoelectric coupling. Magnetoelectric materials have so far been restricted to systems that exhibit long-range order in their electric and magnetic moments. Here, we show that a room-temperature, switchable magnetoelectric can be realized that is naturally disordered. The building blocks are Tellegen particles that orient in either an electric or a magnetic field…
Axion field induced topological magneto-electric response has attracted lots of attentions since it was first proposed by Qi et al. in 2008. Here we find a new type of anti-commutative magneto-electric response β^ξ(ω), which can induce a dynamical magneto-electric current driven by a time-varying magnetic field. Unlike the Chern-Simons Axion term, this magneto-electric response term is gauge-independent and non-quantized, and manifests in the systems breaking the symmetries of the time-reversal, inversion and mirror. In particular, we propose the antiferromagnetic material Mn_{2}Bi_{2}Te_{5} a…
We propose a model of magneto-electric effect in doped magnetic ferroelectrics. This magneto-electric effect does not involve the spin-orbit coupling and is based purely on the Coulomb interaction. We calculate magnetic phase diagram of doped magnetic ferroelectrics. We show that magneto-electric coupling is pronounced only for ferroelectrics with low dielectric constant. We find that magneto-electric coupling leads to modification of magnetization temperature dependence in the vicinity of ferroelectric phase transition. A peak of magnetization appears. We find that magnetization of doped magn…
The magneto-electrocaloric effect which can be defined as the coupling between magnetocaloric and electrocaloric effects attracts currently considerable attention due to the advantages provided by the caloric effect in designing solid-state refrigeration technologies. The magneto-electrocaloric effect of a multiferroic antiferromagnetic spin system with the Dzyaloshinskii Moriya (DM) interaction is investigated in this paper. The DM interaction is assimilated to a coupling between an external site-dependent electric field and a local electric polarization. The external magnetic is also conside…
A magneto electric (ME) effect was reported [1] for the insulator material of helimagnetic hexaferrite of Sr1.5Ba0.5Zn2Fe12O22. In this study we are interested in investigating this materials ferromagnetic resonance to define its internal anisotropy fields. By using a vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and ferromagnetic resonance (FMR) analysis we realized that this helical hexaferrite has about -0.5 kOe exchange anisotropy field of HE. Also, by using an alternative free energy model we derived this materials Polder tensor and its ferromagnetic resonance condition. Meanwhile, we were able to …
Electric susceptibility of antiferromagnetic multiferroics with cycloidal spin order at magnetoelectric effect associated with collinear component of spins
Magneto-electric multipoles, which are odd under both space-inversion $\cal I$ and time-reversal $\cal T$ symmetries, are fundamental in understanding and characterizing magneto-electric materials. However, the detection of these magneto-electric multipoles is often not straightforward as they remain "hidden" in conventional experiments in part since many magneto-electrics exhibit combined $\cal IT$ symmetry. In the present work, we show that the anti-symmetric Compton profile is a unique signature for all the magneto-electric multipoles, since the asymmetric magnetization density of the magne…
We have investigated the coupling of lattice with spin via strain interactions in the CoFe2O4/PMN-PT composite system. X-ray diffraction and Raman spectroscopic studies illustrate a remarkable modification in CoFe2O4lattice across Curie temperature (450 K) of PMN-PT. Subsequently, CoFe2O4/PMN-PT composite reveals a sudden drop in magnetic moment across Tc of PMN-PT (450 K). However, theindependent CoFe2O4phasedisplaystypical ferromagnetic behaviour across this temperature. These findings establish spin-lattice coupling owing to th interfacial strain transfer between CoFe2O4 and PMN-PT in compos…
Interest in first-principles calculations within the multiferroic community has been rapidly on the rise over the last decade. Initially considered as a powerful support to explain experimentally observed behaviours, the trend has evolved and, nowadays, density functional theory calculations has become also an essential predicting tool for identifying original rules to achieve multiferroism and design new magneto-electric compounds. This chapter aims to highlight the key advances in the field of multiferroics for which first-principles methods have contributed significantly. The essential theo…
We report observation of magneto-electric and magneto-dielectric couplings in ceramic Co3TeO6. Temperature dependent DC magnetization and dielectric constant measurements together indicate coupling between magnetic order and electronic polarization. Strong anomaly in dielectric constant at ~ 18K in zero magnetic field indicates presence of spontaneous polarization. Observations like weak ferromagnetic order at lower temperature, field and temperature dependences of the ferroelectric transition provide experimental verification of the recent theoretical proposal by P. Toledano et al., Phys. Rev…
We present a study of the control of electric field induced strain on the magnetic and electrical transport properties in a magneto-elastically coupled artificial multiferroic Fe3O4/BaTiO3 heterostructure. In this Fe3O4/BaTiO3 heterostructure, the Fe3O4 thin film is epitaxially grown in the form of bilateral domains, analogous to a-c stripe domains of the underlying BaTiO3(001) substrate. By in-situ electric field dependent magnetization measurements, we demonstrate the extrinsic control of the magnetic anisotropy and the characteristic Verwey metal-insulator transition of the epitaxial Fe3O4 …
Magnetoelectric coupling between magnetic and electric dipoles is one of the cornerstones of modern physics towards developing the most energy-efficient magnetic data storage. Conventionally, magnetoelectric coupling is achieved in single-phase multiferroics or in magnetoelectric composite nanostructures consisting of ferromagnetic and ferroelectric/piezoelectric materials. Here, we demonstrate an electric-field-induced strain-mediated magnetoelectric effect in ultrathin CoFeB/MgO magnetic tunnel junction employing non-piezoelectric material, which is a vitally important structure for spintron…
We report the observation of electric polarization in the magnetically ordered state of the Haldane chain compound, Gd$_2$BaNiO$_5$, with strongly correlated magnetic and dielectric properties. The results of dc magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements indicate two magnetic transitions, one corresponding to the anti-ferromagnetic order at T$_N$ around 55 K and the other to spin-reorientation transition at T$_{SR}$ around 24 K. The dielectric permittivity ($ε'$) and loss (tan$δ$) also exhibit anomalies in the vicinity of T$_{SR}$ and T$_N$ respectively. Below the spin-reorientation…
Recent data reported on the magneto-electric coupling,α, of hexaferrite materials is very high, and they have the potential to impact future technologies in a major way. The fundamental question addressed in this paper is what does α depend on and, therefore, to what extent can α increase in future experiments. Mathematical formulation of a microscopic theory would be rather complex, especially for a complex crystal structure as the Z-type hexaferrite, for example. We have opted for a thermodynamic argument in which a functional relationship between α and material parameters was derived. We fi…
The present paper proposes the direct calculation of the microscopic contributions to the magneto-electric coupling, using ab initio methods. The electrostrictive and the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya contributions were evaluated individually. For this purpose a specific method was designed, combining DFT calculations and embedded fragments, explicitely correlated, quantum chemical calculations. This method allowed us to calculate the evolution of the magnetic couplings as a function of an applied electric field. We found that in $\rm YMnO_3$ the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya contribution to the magneto-elect…
Some possible connection between spin and charge degrees of freedom in magneto-resistive manganites is investigated through a thorough experimental study of the magnetic (AC susceptibility and DC magnetization) and transport (resistivity and thermal conductivity) properties. Measurements are reported in the case of well characterized polycrystalline La_{0.8}Sr_{0.2}MnO_3 samples. The experimental results suggest rather strong field-induced polarization effects in our material, clearly indicating the presence of ordered FM regions inside the semiconducting phase. Using an analytical expression …
The electric and magnetic properties of (BaTiO$_3$)$_n$/(CaMnO$_3$)$_n$ short-period superlattices are studied by the first-principles calculations. The local electric polarizations in the CaMnO$_3$ layers are significant, comparable to that in the BaTiO$_3$ layers. Remarkably, the electric polarization is almost doubled when the spin configuration changes from antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic in the superlattices, indicating a giant magnetoelectric coupling. This enhancement of the magnetoelectric coupling is due to the suppression of the antiferrodistortive mode in the CaMnO$_3$ layers at …
We report on the temperature and electric field driven evolution of the magnetoresistance lineshape at an interface between Ni/AlO$_x$ and Nb-doped SrTiO$_3$. This is manifested as a superposition of the Lorentzian lineshape due to spin accumulation and a parabolic background related to tunneling anisotropic magnetoresistance (TAMR). The characteristic Lorentzian line shape of the spin voltage is retrieved only at low temperatures and large positive applied bias. This is caused by the reduction of electric field at large positive applied bias which results in a simultaneous reduction of the ba…
We incorporate single crystal Fe$_3$O$_4$ thin films into a gated device structure and demonstrate the ability to control the Verwey transition with static electric fields. The Verwey transition temperature ($T_V$) increases for both polarities of the electric field, indicating the effect is not driven by changes in carrier concentration. Energetics of induced electric polarization and/or strain within the Fe$_3$O$_4$ film provide a possible explanation for this behavior. Electric field control of the Verwey transition leads directly to a large magnetoelectric effect with coefficient of 585 pT…
We theoretically investigate a new kind of nonlinear magnetoresistance on the surface of three-dimensional topological insulators (TIs). At variance with the unidirectional magnetoresistance (UMR) effect in magnetic bilayers, this nonlinear magnetoresistance does not rely on a conducting ferromagnetic layer and scales linearly with both the applied electric and magnetic fields; for this reason, we name it bilinear magneto-electric resistance (BMER). We show that the sign and the magnitude of the BMER depends sensitively on the orientation of the current with respect to the magnetic field as we…
We extend the band theory of linear orbital magnetoelectric coupling to treat crystals under finite electric fields. Previous work established that the orbital magnetoelectric response of a generic insulator at zero field comprises three contributions that were denoted as local circulation, itinerant circulation, and Chern-Simons. We find that the expression for each of them is modified by the presence of a dc electric field. Remarkably, the sum of the three correction terms vanishes, so that the total coupling is still given by the same formula as at zero field. This conclusion is confirmed b…
Synthesis and extensive structural, pyroelectric, magnetic, dielectric and magneto-electric characterizations are reported for polycrystalline Co4Nb2O9 towards unraveling the multiferroic state especially in reference to the magnetic spin flop transition. Magnetic measurements confirm the Co4Nb2O9 becomes antiferromagnetic (AFM) at around 28 K but no clear evidence for spin-flop effect was found. Associated with the magnetic phase transition, a sharp peak in pyroelectric current indicates the appearance of the strong magneto-electric coupling below Neel temperature (TN) with a large coupling c…
First- and second-harmonic dielectric susceptibilities are maidenly studied on Samarium Orthoferrite of mesoscopic/500 nm and nanoscopic/55 nm grainsizes. Magneto-electrically coupled to the antiferromagnetic and spin-reorientation transitions, fundamental and harmonic dielectricity consistently reflect the global/local polarization effects of crystallite-size dependent electrical orderings. Bulk and incipient ferroelectricity respectively in nanoscopic and mesoscopic crystallites concur the higher-temperature antiferromagnetic ordering (T_N ~670 K). Upon the spin-reorientation transition at l…
Ferromagnet-ferroelectric-metal superlattices are proposed to realize the large room-temperature magnetoelectric effect. Spin dependent electron screening is the fundamental mechanism at the microscopic level. We also predict an electric control of magnetization in this structure. The naturally broken inversion symmetry in our tri-component structure introduces a magnetoelectric coupling energy of $P M^2$. Such a magnetoelectric coupling effect is general in ferromagnet-ferroelectric heterostructures, independent of particular chemical or physical bonding, and will play an important role in th…
We present a phenomenological scheme to study the size-dependent electric voltage-controlled magnetic anisotropy in ferromagnetic (FM)/ferroelectric (FE) heterostructures. The FM layers are either metallic Fe(001), Ni(001), Co(0001), or half-metallic (La, Sr)MnO3 films. Two magnetoelectric mechanisms, i.e., interface-charge and strain-mediated couplings, are considered. We show that the interface-charge mediated coupling is the main mechanism for the magnetoelectic coupling when the FM film thickness is below a certain transition thickness dtr while the strain-mediated coupling dominates above…
By combining neutron four-circle diffraction and polarized neutron diffraction techniques we have determined the complex spin structures of a multiferroic, YMn2O5, that exhibits two ferroelectric phases at low temperatures. The obtained magnetic structure has spiral components in both the low temperature ferroelectric phases that are magnetically commensurate and incommensurate, respectively. Among proposed microscopic theories for the magneto-electric coupling, our results are consistent with both the spin-current model that requires a magnetic transverse (cycloidal) spiral structure in order…
Our results describe an unprecedented example of change in the mechanism of magnetically-induced electric polarization from spin current to spin-dependent p-d hybridization model. We have followed the evolution of the magnetic structures of (ND4)2[FeCl5 D2O] compound using single crystal neutron diffraction under external magnetic field. The spin arrangements change from incommensurate cycloidal to commensurate distorted-cycloidal and finally to quasi-collinear. The determination of the magnetic structures allows us to explain the observed electric polarization in the different ferroelectric p…
A layered iron oxide \rfeo ($R$: rare-earth elements) is an exotic dielectric material with charge-order (CO) driven electric polarization and magnetoelectric effect caused by spin-charge coupling. In this paper, a theory of electronic structure and dielectric property in \rfeo is presented. Charge frustration in paired-triangular lattices allows a charge imbalance without inversion symmetry. Spin frustration induces reinforcement of this polar CO by a magnetic ordering. We also analyze an orbital model for the Fe ion which does not show a conventional long-range order.
We demonstrate an electric-field control of tunneling magnetoresistance (TMR) effect in a semiconductor quantum-dot (QD) spin-valve device. By using ferromagnetic Ni nano-gap electrodes, we observe the Coulomb blockade oscillations at a small bias voltage. In the vicinity of the Coulomb blockade peak, the TMR effect is significantly modulated and even its sign is switched by changing the gate voltage, where the sign of the TMR value changes at the resonant condition.
The magneto-optical spectra of ABC-stacked trilayer graphene are enriched by the electric field. A lot of prominent absorption peaks, which arise from the inter- Lnadau-level transitions, gradually change from the twin-peak structures into the double-peak ones with the increasing electric-field strength. This comes from the de- struction in mirror symmetry of xy-plane and the non-equivalence for two sublattices with the identical projections. Specially, a single threshold peak becomes a double- peak structure, owing to the Fermi-Dirac distribution. The absorption frequencies continuously grow …
We report remarkable multiferroic effects in polycrystalline Bi2Fe4O9. High-resolution X-ray diffraction shows that this compound has orthorhombic structure. Magnetic measurements confirm an antiferromagnetic transition around 260 K. A pronounced inverse S-shape anomaly in the loss tangent of dielectric measurement is observed near the Neel temperature. This feature shifts with the application of magnetic field. These anomalies are indicative of substantial coupling between the electric and magnetic orders in this compound.
We study magnetic state and electron transport properties of composite multiferroic system consisting of a granular ferromagnetic thin film placed above the ferroelectric substrate. Ferroelectricity and magnetism in this case are coupled by the long-range Coulomb interaction. We show that magnetic state and magneto-transport strongly depend on temperature, external electric field, and electric polarization of the substrate. Ferromagnetic order exists at finite temperature range around ferroelectric Curie point. Outside the region the film is in the superparamagnetic state. We demonstrate that …
Topological insulators (TIs) exhibit many exotic properties. In particular, a topological magneto-electric (TME) effect, quantized in units of the fine structure constant, exists in TIs. In this Letter, we study theoretically the scattering properties of electromagnetic waves by TI circular cylinders particularly in the Rayleigh scattering limit. Compared with ordinary dielectric cylinders, the scattering by TI cylinders shows many unusual features due to the TME effect. Two proposals are suggested to determine the TME effect of TIs simply based on measuring the electric-field components of sc…
We study coupling between the ferroelectric polarization and magnetization of granular ferromagnetic film using a phenomenological model of combined multiferroic system consisting of granular ferromagnetic film placed above the ferroelectric (FE) layer. The coupling is due to screening of Coulomb interaction in the granular film by the FE layer. Below the FE Curie temperature the magnetization has hysteresis as a function of electric field. Below the magnetic ordering temperature the polarization has hysteresis as a function of magnetic field. We study the magneto-electric coupling for weak an…
We have determined the terahertz spectrum of the chiral langasite Ba$_3$NbFe$_3$Si$_2$O$_{14}$ by means of synchrotron-radiation measurements. Two excitations are revealed that are shown to have a different nature. The first one, purely magnetic, is observed at low temperature in the magnetically ordered phase and is assigned to a magnon. The second one persits far into the paramagnetic phase and exhibits both an electric and a magnetic activity at slightly different energies. This magnetoelectric excitation is interpreted in terms of atomic rotations and requires a helical electric polarizati…
Low energy excitations in the multiferroic material TbMnO3 have been investigated by Raman spectroscopy. Our observations reveal the existence of two peaks at 30 cm-1 and 60 cm-1. They are observed in the cycloidal phase below the Curie temperature but not in the sinusoidal phase, suggesting their magnetoelectric origin. While the peak energies coincide with the frequencies of electromagnons measured previously by transmission spectroscopy, they show surprisingly different selection rules, with the 30 cm-1 excitation enhanced by the electric field of light along the spontaneous polarization. T…
Magneto-dielectric spectra of La0.95Ca0.05CoO3 covering the crossover of spin states reveals strong coupling of its spin and dipolar degrees of freedom. Signature of spin-state transition at 30K clearly manifests in magnetization, supported by Co L_3,2-edge XAS data on the doped-specimen as consistent with its suppressed T_SST vs. ~150K for pure LaCoO3. Dispersive activation-step Δε'(T_ω)~O(10^2) and relaxation-peak ε"(T_ω) reflect the allied influence of coexistent spin-states on the dielectric character. Dipolar relaxation in the LS regime below T_SST is partly segmental (VFT kinetics) featu…
We consider a disordered two-dimensional electron gas with spin-orbit coupling placed in a perpendicular magnetic field and calculate the magnitude and direction of the electric-field-induced spin polarization. We find that in strong magnetic fields the polarization becomes an oscillatory function of the magnetic field and that the amplitude of these oscillations is parametrically larger than the polarization at zero magnetic field. We show that the enhanced amplitude of the polarization is a consequence of strong electron-hole asymmetry in a quantizing magnetic field.
We have measured the dielectric constant and the pyroelectric current of orthorhombic (space group $Pbam$) NdCrTiO$_5$ polycrystalline samples. The dielectric constant and the pyroelectric current show features associated with ferroelectric transitions at the antiferromagnetic transition temperature ($T_{\text{N}}$ = 21 K). The effect of magnetic fields is to enhance the features almost linearly up to the maximum measured field (7 T) with a spontaneous polarization value of $\sim 3.5 μ$C/m$^2$. Two possible scenarios, the linear magnetoelectric effect and multiferroicity (antiferromagnetism + …

In this paper, magnetoelectric effects of Sr Z-type hexaferrite, Sr3Fe24Co2O41, at room temperature is measured. The change in remanence magnetization was measured by applying a DC voltage or electric field across a slab of hexaferrite. Changes of ~ 18% in remanence was observed in an electric field of 10,000V/cm implying a similar change in the microwave permeability at frequencies below 3GHz. Also, a change in dielectric constant at 1 GHz of ~16% in a magnetic field of only 320 Oe was measured. In these types of measurements high resistivity is critical in order to reduce current flow in the…

With a combined ab initio density functional and model Hamiltonian approach we establish that in the recently discovered multiferroic phase of the manganite Sr$_{1/2}$Ba$_{1/2}$MnO$_{3}$ the polar distortion of Mn and O ions is stabilized via enhanced in-plane Mn-O hybridizations. The magnetic superexchange interaction is very sensitive to the polar bond-bending distortion, and we find that this dependence directly causes a strong magnetoelectric coupling. This novel mechanism for multiferroicity is consistent with the experimentally observed reduced ferroelectric polarization upon the onset o…
