Let K be a variety of (commutative, integral) residuated lattices. The substructural logic usually associated with K is an algebraizable logic that has K as its equivalent algebraic semantics, and is a logic that preserves truth, i.e., 1 is the only truth value preserved by the inferences of the logic. In this paper we introduce another logic associated with K, namely the logic that preserves degrees of truth, in the sense that it preserves lower bounds of truth values in inferences. We study this second logic mainly from the point of view of abstract algebraic logic. We determine its algebraic models and we classify it in the Leibniz and the Frege hierarchies: we show that it is always fully selfextensional, that for most varieties K it is non-protoalgebraic, and that it is algebraizable if and only K is a variety of generalized Heyting algebras, in which case it coincides with the logic that preserves truth. We also characterize the new logic in three ways: by a Hilbert style axiomatic system, by a Gentzen style sequent calculus, and by a set of conditions on its closure operator. Concerning the relation between the two logics, we prove that the truth preserving logic is the purely inferential extension of the one that preserves degrees of truth with either the rule of Modus Ponens or the rule of Adjunction for the fusion connective.
In 2004 Anna Maria Radzikowska et al \cite{RK2004} investigated the fuzzy rough sets where the set of truth values is an arbitrary residuated lattice. In this paper, we extend their work by considering a residuated multilattice $M$ as the set of truth values. $M$-fuzzy rough sets are defined using the residuation operators provided by residuated multilattice $M$. Depending on classes of binary fuzzy relations, we define several classes of $M$-fuzzy rough sets and investigate some properties of these classes.
It is proved that epimorphisms are surjective in a range of varieties of residuated structures, including all varieties of Heyting or Brouwerian algebras of finite depth, and all varieties consisting of Goedel algebras, relative Stone algebras, Sugihara monoids or positive Sugihara monoids. This establishes the infinite deductive Beth definability property for a corresponding range of substructural logics. On the other hand, it is shown that epimorphisms need not be surjective in a locally finite variety of Heyting or Brouwerian algebras of width 2. It follows that the infinite Beth property i…
In this paper we study projective algebras in varieties of (bounded) commutative integral residuated lattices from an algebraic (as opposed to categorical) point of view. In particular we use a well-established construction in residuated lattices: the ordinal sum. Its interaction with divisibility makes our results have a better scope in varieties of divisibile commutative integral residuated lattices, and it allows us to show that many such varieties have the property that every finitely presented algebra is projective. In particular, we obtain results on (Stonean) Heyting algebras, certain v…
A commutative residuated lattice A is said to be subidempotent if the lower bounds of its neutral element e are idempotent (in which case they naturally constitute a Brouwerian algebra A*). It is proved here that epimorphisms are surjective in a variety K of such algebras A (with or without involution), provided that each finitely subdirectly irreducible algebra B in K has two properties: (1) B is generated by lower bounds of e, and (2) the poset of prime filters of B* has finite depth. Neither (1) nor (2) may be dropped. The proof adapts to the presence of bounds. The result generalizes some …
We study (strictly) join irreducible varieties in the lattice of subvarieties of residuated lattices. We explore the connections with well-connected algebras and suitable generalizations, focusing in particular on representable varieties. Moreover we find weakened notions of Hallden completeness that characterize join irreducibility. We characterize strictly join irreducible varieties of basic hoops, and use the generalized rotation construction to find strictly join irreducible varieties in subvarieties of MTL-algebras. We also obtain some general results about linear varieties of residuated …
A residuated lattice is defined to be integrally closed if it satisfies the equations x\x = e and x/x = e. Every integral, cancellative, or divisible residuated lattice is integrally closed, and, conversely, every bounded integrally closed residuated lattice is integral. It is proved that the mapping a -> (a\e)\e on any integrally closed residuated lattice is a homomorphism onto a lattice-ordered group. A Glivenko-style property is then established for varieties of integrally closed residuated lattices with respect to varieties of lattice-ordered groups, showing in particular that integrally c…
In this paper we continue to study varieties of K-lattices, focusing on their bounded versions. These (bounded) commutative residuated lattices arise from a specific kind of construction: the {\em twist-product} of a lattice. Twist-products were first considered by Kalman in 1958 to deal with order involutions on plain lattices, but the extension of this concept to residuated lattices has attracted some attention lately.
In this paper we study structural properties of residuated lattices that are idempotent as monoids. We provide descriptions of the totally ordered members of this class and obtain counting theorems for the number of finite algebras in various subclasses. We also establish the finite embeddability property for certain varieties generated by classes of residuated lattices that are conservative in the sense that monoid multiplication always yields one of its arguments. We then make use of a more symmetric version of Raftery's characterization theorem for totally ordered commutative idempotent res…
We prove that every integral rig in Sets is (functorially) the rig of global sections of a sheaf of really local integral rigs. We also show that this representation result may be lifted to residuated integral rigs and then restricted to varieties of these. In particular, as a corollary, we obtain a representation theorem for pre-linear residuated join-semilattices in terms of totally ordered fibers. The restriction of this result to the level of MV-algebras coincides with the Dubuc-Poveda representation theorem.
Necessary and sufficient conditions are presented for the (first-order) theory of a universal class of algebraic structures (algebras) to admit a model completion, extending a characterization provided by Wheeler. For varieties of algebras that have equationally definable principal congruences and the compact intersection property, these conditions yield a more elegant characterization obtained (in a slightly more restricted setting) by Ghilardi and Zawadowski. Moreover, it is shown that under certain further assumptions on congruence lattices, the existence of a model completion implies that …
The aim of this paper is to propose a many-valued modal framework to formalize reasoning with both graded preferences and propositions, in the style of van Benthem et al.'s classical modal logics for preferences. To do so, we start from Bou et al.'s minimal modal logic over a finite and linearly ordered residuated lattice. We then define appropriate extensions on a multi-modal language with graded modalities, both for weak and strict preferences, and with truth-constants. Actually, the presence of truth-constants in the language allows us to show that the modal operators Box and Diamond of the…
Besides the better-known Nelson's Logic and Paraconsistent Nelson's Logic, in "Negation and separation of concepts in constructive systems" (1959), David Nelson introduced a logic called S with the aim of analyzing the constructive content of provable negation statements in mathematics. Motivated by results from Kleene, in "On the Interpretation of Intuitionistic Number Theory" (1945), Nelson investigated a more symmetric recursive definition of truth, according to which a formula could be either primitively verified or refuted. The logic S was defined by means of a calculus lacking the contra…
