Optically-trapped two-component Fermi gases near a broad Feshbach resonance exhibit universal thermodynamics, where the properties of the gas are independent of the details of the two-body scattering interactions. We present a global proof that such a universal gas obeys the virial theorem for {\it any} trapping potential $U$ and any spin mixture, without assuming either the local density approximation or harmonic confinement. The total energy of the gas is given in scale invariant form by $E=<ε\partial U/\partialε>$, where $ε$ is an {\it arbitrary} energy scale in terms of which all length and energy scales that appear in the confining potential are written. This result enables model-independent energy measurement in traps that are anharmonic as well as anisotropic by observing only the cloud profile, and provides a consistency check for many-body calculations in the universal regime.
It is shown that the interaction potentials for argon, krypton, xenon, carbon dioxide, ammonia, water, n-pentane, n-octane, 1-propanol, suggested in [1] cannot describe experimental second density virial coefficient data within their uncertainty over a wide temperature range.
We derive path-integral expressions for the second and third virial coefficients of monatomic quantum gases. Unlike previous work that considered only Boltzmann statistics, we include exchange effects (Bose-Einstein or Fermi-Dirac statistics). We use state-of-the-art pair and three-body potentials to calculate the third virial coefficient of 3He and 4He in the temperature range 2.6-24.5561 K. We obtain uncertainties smaller than those of the limited experimental data. Inclusion of exchange effects is necessary to obtain accurate results below about 7 K.
The virial expansion of ideal quantum gases reveals some interesting and amusing properties when considered as a function of dimensionality $d$. In particular, the convergence radius $ρ_c(d)$ of the expansion is particulary large at {\em exactly\/} $d=3$ dimensions, $ρ_c(3) = 7.1068\ldots \times \lim_{d\to3} ρ_c(d)$. The same phenomenon occurs in a few other special (non-integer) dimensions. We explain the origin of these facts, and discuss more generally the structure of singularities governing the asymptotic behavior of the ideal gas virial expansion.
In this paper, we generally expressed the virial expansion of ideal quantum gases by the heat kernel coefficients for the corresponding Laplace type operator. As examples, we give the virial coefficients for quantum gases in $d$-dimensional confined space and spheres, respectively. Our results show that, the relative correction from the boundary to the second virial coefficient is independent of the dimension and it always enhances the quantum exchange interaction. In $d$-dimensional spheres, however, the influence of the curvature enhances the quantum exchange interaction in two dimensions, b…
Confinement of atoms inside impenetrable (hard) and penetrable (soft) cavities has been studied for nearly eight decades. However, a unified virial theorem for such systems has not yet been found. Here we provide a general virial-like equation in terms of mean square and expectation values of potential and kinetic energy operators. It appears to be applicable in both free and confined situations. Apart from that, we have derived an equation using the time-independent Schrödinger equation, which can be treated as a sufficient condition for a given stationary quantum state. A change of boundary …
The virial expansion of a gas is a correction to the ideal gas law that is usually discussed in advanced courses in statistical mechanics. In this note we outline this derivation in a manner suitable for advanced undergraduate and introductory graduate classroom presentations. We introduce a physically meaningful interpretation of the virial expansion that has heretofore escaped attention, by showing that the virial series is actually an expansion in a parameter that is the ratio of the effective volume of a molecule to its mean volume. Using this interpretation we show why under normal condit…
We present the first framework for fully quantum calculation of the third dielectric virial coefficient $C_\varepsilon(T)$ of noble gases, including exchange effects. The quantum effects are taken into account with the path-integral Monte Carlo method. Calculations employing state-of-the-art pair and three-body potentials and pair polarizabilities yield results generally consistent with the few scattered experimental data available for helium, neon, and argon, but rigorous calculations with well-described uncertainties will require the development of surfaces for the three-body nonadditive pol…
We report a formula for the dry adiabatic lapse rate that depends on the compressibility factor and the adiabatic curves. Then, to take into account the non-ideal behavior of the gases, we consider molecules that can move, rotate, and vibrate and the information of molecular interactions through the virial coefficients. We deduce the compressibility factor in its virial expansion form and the adiabatic curves within the virial expansion up to any order. With this information and to illustrate the mentioned formula, we write the lapse rate for the ideal gas, and the virial expansion up to the s…
This work is devoted to analyze the relation between the thermodynamic properties of a confined fluid and the shape of its confining vessel. Recently, new insights in this topic were found through the study of cluster integrals for inhomogeneous fluids, that revealed the dependence on the vessel shape of the low density behavior of the system. Here, the statistical mechanics and thermodynamics of fluids confined in wedges or by edges is revisited, focusing on their cluster integrals. In particular, the well known hard sphere fluid, which was not studied in this framework so far, is analyzed un…
In this paper, the effects of boundary and connectivity on ideal gases in two-dimensional confined space and three-dimensional tubes are discussed in detail based on the analytical result. The implication of such effects on the mesoscopic system is also revealed.
A method is proposed to approximate the unlimited subcritical set of Mayer`s reducible cluster integrals (i.e., the power coefficients of the known virial expansions for pressure and density in powers of activity) on the basis of information about several irreducible integrals (virial coefficients) and the saturation activity. For the Lennard-Jones fluid, the first four irreducible integrals are actually sufficient to reproduce gas isotherms (including the flat phase-transition region) with high accuracy at temperatures between the triple and critical points. At low temperatures, even the usag…
Strongly correlated Fermi system plays a fundamental role in very different areas of physics, from neutron stars, quark-gluon plasmas, to high temperature superconductors. Despite the broad applicability, it is notoriously difficult to be understood theoretically because of the absence of a small interaction parameter. Recent achievements of ultracold trapped Fermi atoms near a Feshbach resonance have ushered in enormous changes. The unprecedented control of interaction, geometry and purity in these novel systems has led to many exciting experimental results, which are to be urgently understoo…
We propose a new method for the evaluation of the particle density and kinetic pressure profiles in inhomogeneous one-dimensional systems of non-interacting fermions, and apply it to harmonically confined systems of up to N=1000 fermions. The method invokes a Green's function operator in coordinate space, which is handled by techniques originally developed for the calculation of the density of single-particle states from Green's functions in the energy domain. In contrast to the Thomas-Fermi (local density) approximation, the exact profiles under harmonic confinement show negative local pressu…
In this paper we calculate some exact solutions of the grand partition functions for quantum gases in confined space, such as ideal gases in two- and three-dimensional boxes, in tubes, in annular containers, on the lateral surface of cylinders, and photon gases in three-dimensional boxes. Based on these exact solutions, which, of course, contain the complete information about the system, we discuss the geometry effect which is neglected in the calculation with the thermodynamic limit $V\to \infty $, and analyze the validity of the quantum statistical method which can be used to calculate the g…
The hydrodynamic equation governing the homogeneous time evolution of the temperature in a model of confined granular gas is studied by means of the Enskog equation. The existence of a normal solution of the kinetic equation is assumed as a condition for hydrodynamics. Dimensional analysis implies a scaling of the distribution function that is used to determine it in the first Sonine approximation, with a coefficient that evolves in time through its dependence on the temperature. The theoretical predictions are compared with numerical results obtained by the direct simulation Monte Carlo metho…
We present a systematic computation of the heat conductivity of the Markov jump process modeling the energy exchanges in an array of locally confined hard spheres at the conduction threshold. Based on a variational formula [Sasada M. 2016, {\it Thermal conductivity for stochastic energy exchange models}, arXiv:1611.08866], explicit upper bounds on the conductivity are derived, which exhibit a rapid power-law convergence towards an asymptotic value. We thereby conclude that the ratio of the heat conductivity to the energy exchange frequency deviates from its static contribution by a small negat…
We study the superfluid properties of (quasi) one-dimensional bosonic atom gases/liquids in traps with finite geometries in the presence of strong quantum fluctuations. Driving the condensate with a moving defect we find the nucleation rate for phase slips using instanton techniques. While phase slips are quenched in a ring resulting in a superfluid response, they proliferate in a tube geometry where we find Bloch oscillations in the chemical potential. These Bloch oscillations describe the individual tunneling of atoms through the defect and thus are a consequence of particle quantization.
We analyze the effective Hamiltonian arising from a suitable power series expansion of the overlap integrals of Wannier functions for confined bosonic atoms in a 1d optical lattice. For certain constraints between the coupling constants, we construct an explicit relation between such an effective bosonic Hamiltonian and the integrable spin-$S$ anisotropic Heisenberg model. Therefore the former results to be integrable by construction. The field theory is governed by an anisotropic non linear $σ$-model with singlet and triplet massive excitations; such a result holds also in the generic non-int…
The van-der-Waals version of the second virial coefficient is not far from being exact if the model parameters are appropriately chosen. It is shown how the van-der-Waals resemblance originates from the interplay of thermal averaging and superposition of scattering phase shift contributions. The derivation of the two parameters from the quantum virial coefficient reveals a fermion-boson symmetry in non-ideal quantum gases. Numerical details are worked out for the Helium quantum gases.
We present the full thermodynamics of a fluid confined by an arbitrary external potential based on the virial expansion of the grand potential. The fluid may be classical or quantum and it is assumed that interatomic interactions are pairwise additive. We indicate how the appropriate "generalized" volume and pressure variables, that replace the usual volume and hydrostatic pressure, emerge for a given confining potential in the thermodynamic limit. A discussion of the physical meaning and of the measurement of these variables is presented. We emphasize that this treatment yields the correct eq…
We present a Green's function method for the evaluation of the particle density profile and of the higher moments of the one-body density matrix in a mesoscopic system of N Fermi particles moving independently in a linear potential. The usefulness of the method is illustrated by applications to a Fermi gas confined in a harmonic potential well, for which we evaluate the momentum flux and kinetic energy densities as well as their quantal mean-square fluctuations. We also study some properties of the kinetic energy functional E_{kin}[n(x)] in the same system. Whereas a local approximation to the…
We propose a general formalism to study the static properties of a system composed of particles with nearest neighbor interactions that are located on the sites of a one-dimensional lattice confined by walls (``confined Takahashi lattice gas''). Linear recursion relations for generalized partition functions are derived, from which thermodynamic quantities, as well as density distributions and correlation functions of arbitrary order can be determined in the presence of an external potential. Explicit results for density profiles and pair correlations near a wall are presented for various situa…
In terms of the s-wave phase shift of the two-body scattering at thermal wavelength, a systematic perturbative expansion of the virial coefficients is developed for a two-dimensional dilute system of bosons in its gaseous phase at low temperature. The thermodynamic functions are calculated to the second order of the expansion parameter. The observability of the universal low energy limit of the two-dimensional phase shift with a quasi-two dimensional atomic gas in an anisotropic trap is discussed.
The departure from ideal gas behavior is described by several known equations of state (EoS), developed from a combination of theoretical considerations and experimental correlations. In this work a different approach is proposed, in which from a pairwise potential of the Lennard-Jones type, interaction between molecules is accounted for by means of a self-consistent force field. An EoS is thus derived and compared to the Virial and to the van der Waals EoS.
We investigate the fluctuations of the condensate in the ideal and weakly interacting Bose gases confined in a box of volume V within canonical ensemble. Canonical ensemble is developed to describe the behavior of the fluctuations when different methods of approximation to the weakly interacting Bose gases are used. Research shows that the fluctuations of the condensate exhibit anomalous behavior for the interacting Bose gas confined in a box.
Real thermal motion of gas molecules, free electrons, etc., at long time intervals (much greater than mean free-flight time) possesses, contrary to its popular mathematical models, essentially non-Gaussian statistics. A simple proof of this statement is suggested basing on only the determinism and reversibility of microscopic dynamics and besides incidentally derived virial expansion of a path probability distribution of molecular Brownian particle.
The probability amplitude for $N$ particles in a quantum gas with negligible range of interparticle interaction potentials to come to a small region of size $r$ scales like $r^γ$. It is shown that $γ$ is quantitatively related to the ground state energy of these $N$ fermions in the unitarity limit, confined by an isotropic harmonic potential. For large $N$, the short range density distribution of these $N$ particles is predominantly the same as the Thomas-Fermi profile of the gas in the unitarity limit confined by such a harmonic potential. These results may shed light on strongly interacting …
Particle motion and correlations in fluids within confined domains promise to provide challenges and opportunities for experimental and theoretical studies. We report molecular dynamics simulations of a Lennard-Jones gas mimicking argon under partial confinement for a wide range of densities at a temperature of 300 K. The isotropic behavior of velocity autocorrelation function (VACF) and mean squared displacement (MSD), seen in the bulk, breaks down due to partial confinement. A distinct trend emerges in the VACF-perpendicular and MSD-perpendicular, corresponding to the confined direction, whi…
Using a high temperature virial expansion, we present a controllable study of the thermodynamics of strongly correlated Fermi gases near the BEC-BCS crossover region. We propose a practical way to determine the expansion coefficients for both harmonically trapped and homogeneous cases, and calculate the third order coefficient $b_{3}(T)$ at finite temperatures $T$. At resonance, a $T$-independent coefficient $b_{3,\infty}^{\hom}\approx-0.29095295$ is determined in free space. These results are compared with a recent thermodynamic measurement of $^{6}$Li atoms, at temperatures below the degener…
We propose an analytical model for the accurate calculation of size and density dependent quantum oscillations in thermodynamic and transport properties of confined and degenerate non-interacting Fermi gases. We provide a universal, material independent, recipe that explicitly separates oscillatory quantum regime from stationary classical regime. Our model quite accurately estimates quantum oscillations depending on confinement and degeneracy. We construct a phase diagram representing stationary and oscillatory regimes on degeneracy-confinement space. Analytical expressions of phase transition…
We solve the three-body problem of an ultracold Fermi gas with parabolic confinement length $a_\perp$ and 3D scattering length $a$. On the two-body level, there is a Feshbach-type resonance at $a_\perp/a\approx 1.46$, and a dimer state for arbitrary $a_\perp/a$. The three-body problem is shown to be universal, an d described by the atom-dimer scattering length $a_{ad}$ and a range parameter $b_{ad}$. In the dimer limit $a_\perp/a\gg 1$, we find a repulsive zero-range atom-dimer interaction. For $a_\perp/a\ll -1$, however, the potential has long range, with $a_{ad}>0$ and $b_{ad}\gg a_{ad}$. Th…
The linear hydrodynamic stability of a model for confined quasi-two-dimensional granular gases is analyzed. The system exhibits homogeneous hydrodynamics, i.e. there are macroscopic evolution equations for homogeneous states. The stability analysis is carried out around all these states and not only the homogeneous steady state reached eventually by the system. It is shown that in some cases the linear analysis is not enough to reach a definite conclusion on the stability, and molecular dynamics simulation results are presented to elucidate these cases. The analysis shows the relevance of nonl…
We evaluate analytically some ground state properties of two-dimensional harmonically confined Fermi vapors with isotropy and for an arbitrary number of closed shells. We first derive a differential form of the virial theorem and an expression for the kinetic energy density in terms of the fermion particle density and its low-order derivatives. These results allow an explicit differential equation to be obtained for the particle density. The equation is third-order, linear and homogeneous. We also obtain a relation between the turning points of kinetic energy and particle densities, and an exp…
Thermodynamic properties of a fermionic system close to the unitarity limit, where the 2-body scattering length |a| approaches infinity is studied at high temperature Boltzmann regime. For dilute systems the virial expansion coefficients in the Boltzmann regime are expected, from general arguments, to be universal. A model independent finite temperature T calculation of the third virial coefficient b3(T) is presented. At the unitarity limit, b3(T) = -0.48 is an universal number. The energy density up to the third virial expansion is derived. These results are relevant for dilute neutron matter…
We investigate the width of the Ginzburg critical region and experimental signatures of critical behavior in strongly interacting trapped Fermi gases close to unitarity, where the s-wave scattering length diverges. Despite the fact that the width of the critical region is of the order unity, evidence of critical behavior in the bulk thermodynamics of trapped gases is strongly suppressed by their inhomogeneity. The specific heat of a harmonically confined gas, for instance, is \textit{linear} in the reduced temperature $t = (T-T_{\mathrm{c}})/T_{\mathrm{c}}$ above $T_{\mathrm{c}}$. We also disc…
The equation of state for a two-dimensional hard-sphere gas is difficult to calculate by usual methods. In this paper we develop an approach for calculating the equation of state of hard-sphere gases, both for two- and three-dimensional cases. By regarding a hard-sphere gas as an ideal gas confined in a container with a multi-core (excluded sphere) boundary, we treat the hard-sphere interaction in an interacting gas as the boundary effect on an ideal quantum gas; this enables us to treat an interacting gas as an ideal one. We calculate the equation of state for a three-dimensional hard-sphere …
We consider a gas of quasi-free quantum particles confined to a finite box, subjected to singular magnetic and electric fields. We prove in great generality that the finite volume grand-canonical pressure is jointly analytic in the chemical potential ant the intensity of the external magnetic field. We also discuss the thermodynamic limit.
After a brief historical introduction to Bose-Einstein condensation and Fermi degeneracy, we discuss theoretical results we have recentely obtained for trapped degenerate quantum gases by means of a thermal field theory approach. In particular, by using Gross-Pitaevskii and Bogoliubov-Popov equations, we consider thermodynamical properties of two Bosonic systems: a gas of Lithium atoms and a gas of Hydrogen atoms. Finally, we investigate finite-temperature density profiles of a dilute Fermi gas of Potassium atoms confined in a harmonic potential.
Fluctuation-induced forces are investigated for ideal and imperfect Bose gases confined to $d$-dimensional films of size $\infty^{d-1}\times D$ under periodic (P), antiperiodic (A), Dirichlet-Dirichlet (DD), Neumann-Neumann (NN), and Robin (R) boundary conditions (BCs). The full scaling functions $Υ^{\text{BC}}_d(x_λ=D/λ_{th},{x_ξ=D/ξ})$ of the residual reduced grand potential per area, $φ_{\text{res},d}^{\text{BC}}(T,μ,D)=D^{-(d-1)}Υ_d^{\text{BC}}(x_λ,x_ξ)$, are determined for the ideal gas case with these BCs, where $λ_{th}$ and $ξ$ are the thermal de-Broglie wavelength and the bulk correlat…
We introduce a systematic framework to calculate the bipartite entanglement entropy of a spatial subsystem in a one-dimensional quantum gas which can be mapped into a noninteracting fermion system. To show the wide range of applicability of the proposed formalism, we use it for the calculation of the entanglement in the eigenstates of periodic systems, in a gas confined by boundaries or external potentials, in junctions of quantum wires and in a time-dependent parabolic potential.
This article aims to study the Coulomb gas model over the $d$-dimensional $p$-adic space. We establish the existence of equilibria measures and the $Γ$-limit for the Coulomb energy functional when the number of configurations tends to infinity. For a cloud of charged particles confined into the unit ball, we compute the equilibrium measure and the minimum of its Coulomb energy functional. In the $p$-adic setting the Coulomb energy is the continuum limit of the minus a hierarchical Hamiltonian attached to a spin glass model with a $p$-adic coupling.
