We propose a new quantifier elimination algorithm for the theory of linear real arithmetic. This algorithm uses as subroutine satisfiability modulo this theory, a problem for which there are several implementations available. The quantifier elimination algorithm presented in the paper is compared, on examples arising from program analysis problems, to several other implementations, all of which cannot solve some of the examples that our algorithm solves easily.
In this paper a constructive formalization of quantifier elimination is presented, based on a classical formalization by Tobias Nipkow. The formalization is implemented and verified in the programming language/proof assistant Agda. It is shown that, as in the classical case, the ability to eliminate a single existential quantifier may be generalized to full quantifier elimination and consequently a decision procedure. The latter is shown to have strong properties under a constructive metatheory, such as the generation of witnesses and counterexamples. Finally, this is demonstrated on a minimal…
We give a quantifier elimination procedures for the extension of Presburger arithmetic with a unary threshold counting quantifier $\exists^{\ge c} y$ that determines whether the number of different $y$ satisfying some formula is at least $c \in \mathbb N$, where $c$ is given in binary. Using a standard quantifier elimination procedure for Presburger arithmetic, the resulting theory is easily seen to be decidable in 4ExpTime. Our main contribution is to develop a novel quantifier-elimination procedure for a more general counting quantifier that decides this theory in 3ExpTime, meaning that it i…
Running verification tasks in database driven systems requires solving quantifier elimination problems of a new kind. These quantifier elimination problems are related to the notion of a cover introduced in ESOP 2008 by Gulwani and Musuvathi. In this paper, we show how covers are strictly related to model completions, a well-known topic in model theory. We also investigate the computation of covers within the Superposition Calculus, by adopting a constrained version of the calculus, equipped with appropriate settings and reduction strategies. In addition, we show that cover computations are co…
The satisfiability problem in real closed fields is decidable. In the context of satisfiability modulo theories, the problem restricted to conjunctive sets of literals, that is, sets of polynomial constraints, is of particular importance. One of the central problems is the computation of good explanations of the unsatisfiability of such sets, i.e.\ obtaining a small subset of the input constraints whose conjunction is already unsatisfiable. We adapt two commonly used real quantifier elimination methods, cylindrical algebraic decomposition and virtual substitution, to provide such conflict sets…
We consider the problem of Partial Quantifier Elimination (PQE). Given formula exists(X)[F(X,Y) & G(X,Y)], where F, G are in conjunctive normal form, the PQE problem is to find a formula F*(Y) such that F* & exists(X)[G] is logically equivalent to exists(X)[F & G]. We solve the PQE problem by generating and adding to F clauses over the free variables that make the clauses of F with quantified variables redundant. The traditional Quantifier Elimination problem (QE) is a special case of PQE where G is empty so all clauses of the input formula with quantified variables need to be made redundant. …
Traditionally, transfer functions have been designed manually for each operation in a program, instruction by instruction. In such a setting, a transfer function describes the semantics of a single instruction, detailing how a given abstract input state is mapped to an abstract output state. The net effect of a sequence of instructions, a basic block, can then be calculated by composing the transfer functions of the constituent instructions. However, precision can be improved by applying a single transfer function that captures the semantics of the block as a whole. Since blocks are program-de…
We consider the problem of existential quantifier elimination for Boolean formulas in Conjunctive Normal Form (CNF). We present a new method for solving this problem called Derivation of Dependency-Sequents (DDS). A Dependency-sequent (D-sequent) is used to record that a set of quantified variables is redundant under a partial assignment. We introduce a resolution-like operation called join that produces a new D-sequent from two existing D-sequents. We also show that DDS is compositional, i.e. if our input formula is a conjunction of independent formulas, DDS automatically recognizes and explo…
We give an algebraic quantifier elimination algorithm for the first-order theory over any given finite field using Gröbner basis methods. The algorithm relies on the strong Nullstellensatz and properties of elimination ideals over finite fields. We analyze the theoretical complexity of the algorithm and show its application in the formal analysis of a biological controller model.
We consider the Quantifier Elimination (QE) problem for propositional CNF formulas with existential quantifiers. QE plays a key role in formal verification. Earlier, we presented an approach based on the following observation. To perform QE, one just needs to add a set of clauses depending on free variables that makes the quantified clauses (i.e. clauses with quantified variables) redundant. To implement this approach, we introduced a branching algorithm making quantified clauses redundant in subspaces and merging the results of branches. To implement this algorithm we developed the machinery …
We formalize a multivariate quantifier elimination (QE) algorithm in the theorem prover Isabelle/HOL. Our algorithm is complete, in that it is able to reduce any quantified formula in the first-order logic of real arithmetic to a logically equivalent quantifier-free formula. The algorithm we formalize is a hybrid mixture of Tarski's original QE algorithm and the Ben-Or, Kozen, and Reif algorithm, and it is the first complete multivariate QE algorithm formalized in Isabelle/HOL.
In recent years, Gödel's ontological proof and variations of it were formalized and analyzed with automated tools in various ways. We supplement these analyses with a modeling in an automated environment based on first-order logic extended by predicate quantification. Formula macros are used to structure complex formulas and tasks. The analysis is presented as a generated type-set document where informal explanations are interspersed with pretty-printed formulas and outputs of reasoners for first-order theorem proving and second-order quantifier elimination. Previously unnoticed or obscured as…
For relational monadic formulas (the Löwenheim class) second-order quantifier elimination, which is closely related to computation of uniform interpolants, projection and forgetting - operations that currently receive much attention in knowledge processing - always succeeds. The decidability proof for this class by Heinrich Behmann from 1922 explicitly proceeds by elimination with equivalence preserving formula rewriting. Here we reconstruct the results from Behmann's publication in detail and discuss related issues that are relevant in the context of modern approaches to second-order quantifi…
This paper describes a formalization of discrete real closed fields in the Coq proof assistant. This abstract structure captures for instance the theory of real algebraic numbers, a decidable subset of real numbers with good algorithmic properties. The theory of real algebraic numbers and more generally of semi-algebraic varieties is at the core of a number of effective methods in real analysis, including decision procedures for non linear arithmetic or optimization methods for real valued functions. After defining an abstract structure of discrete real closed field and the elementary theory o…

Recent improvement on Tarski's procedure for quantifier elimination in the first order theory of real numbers makes it feasible to solve small instances of the following problems completely automatically: 1. listing all equality and inequality constraints implied by a graphical model with hidden variables. 2. Comparing graphyical models with hidden variables (i.e., model equivalence, inclusion, and overlap). 3. Answering questions about the identification of a model or portion of a model, and about bounds on quantities derived from a model. 4. Determing whether a given set of independence asse…
We consider a modification of the Quantifier Elimination (QE) problem called Partial QE (PQE). In PQE, only a small part of the formula is taken out of the scope of quantifiers. The appeal of PQE is that many verification problems, e.g. equivalence checking and model checking, reduce to PQE and the latter is much easier than complete QE. Earlier, we introduced a PQE algorithm based on the machinery of D-sequents. A D-sequent is a record stating that a clause is redundant in a quantified CNF formula in a specified subspace. To make this algorithm efficient, it is important to reuse learned D-se…
We study an expressive model of timed pushdown automata extended with modular and fractional clock constraints. We show that the binary reachability relation is effectively expressible in hybrid linear arithmetic with a rational and an integer sort. This subsumes analogous expressibility results previously known for finite and pushdown timed automata with untimed stack. As key technical tools, we use quantifier elimination for a fragment of hybrid linear arithmetic and for cyclic order atoms, and a reduction to register pushdown automata over cyclic order atoms.
We discuss the topic of unsatisfiability proofs in SMT, particularly with reference to quantifier free non-linear real arithmetic. We outline how the methods here do not admit trivial proofs and how past formalisation attempts are not sufficient. We note that the new breed of local search based algorithms for this domain may offer an easier path forward.
Craig interpolation has emerged as an effective means of generating candidate program invariants. We present interpolation procedures for the theories of Presburger arithmetic combined with (i) uninterpreted predicates (QPA+UP), (ii) uninterpreted functions (QPA+UF) and (iii) extensional arrays (QPA+AR). We prove that none of these combinations can be effectively interpolated without the use of quantifiers, even if the input formulae are quantifier-free. We go on to identify fragments of QPA+UP and QPA+UF with restricted forms of guarded quantification that are closed under interpolation. Form…
We consider the problem of elimination of existential quantifiers from a Boolean CNF formula. Our approach is based on the following observation. One can get rid of dependency on a set of variables of a quantified CNF formula F by adding resolvent clauses of F eliminating boundary points. This approach is similar to the method of quantifier elimination described in [9]. The difference of the method described in the present paper is twofold: {\bullet} branching is performed only on quantified variables, {\bullet} an explicit search for boundary points is performed by calls to a SAT-solver Altho…
We model the algorithmic task of geometric elimination (e.g., quantifier elimination in the elementary field theories of real and complex numbers) by means of certain constraint database queries, called geometric queries. As a particular case of such a geometric elimination task, we consider sample point queries. We show exponential lower complexity bounds for evaluating geometric queries in the general and in the particular case of sample point queries. Although this paper is of theoretical nature, its aim is to explore the possibilities and (complexity-)limits of computer implemented query e…
Quite often, verification tasks for distributed systems are accomplished via counter abstractions. Such abstractions can sometimes be justified via simulations and bisimulations. In this work, we supply logical foundations to this practice, by a specifically designed technique for second order quantifier elimination. Our method, once applied to specifications of verification problems for parameterized distributed systems, produces integer variables systems that are ready to be model-checked by current SMT-based tools. We demonstrate the feasibility of the approach with a prototype implementati…
Quantifier elimination of positive semidefinite cyclic ternary quartic forms is studied in this paper. We solve the problem by the theory of complete discrimination systems, function \RealTriangularize in Maple15 and the so-called Criterions on Equality of Symmetric Inequalities method. The equivalent simple quantifier-free formula is proposed and is difficult to obtain automatically by previous methods or quantifier elimination tools.
We investigate the elimination of quantifiers in first-order formulas via Hilbert's epsilon-operator (or -binder), following Bernays' explicit definitions of the existential and the universal quantifier symbol by means of epsilon-terms. This elimination has its first explicit occurrence in the proof of the first epsilon-theorem in Hilbert-Bernays in 1939. We think that there is a lacuna in this proof w.r.t. this elimination, related to the erroneous assumption that explicit definitions always terminate. Surprisingly, to the best of our knowledge, nobody ever proved confluence or termination fo…

Consistent answers to a query from a possibly inconsistent database are answers that are simultaneously retrieved from every possible repair of the database. Repairs are consistent instances that minimally differ from the original inconsistent instance. It has been shown before that database repairs can be specified as the stable models of a disjunctive logic program. In this paper we show how to use the repair programs to transform the problem of consistent query answering into a problem of reasoning w.r.t. a theory written in second-order predicate logic. It also investigated how a first-ord…
The paper presents our research on quantifier elimination (QE) for compositional reasoning and verification. For compositional reasoning, QE provides the foundation of our approach, serving as the calculus for composition to derive the strongest system-property in a single step, from the given component atomic-properties and their interconnection relation. We first developed this framework for time-independent properties, and later extended it to time-dependent property composition. The extension requires, in addition, shifting the given properties along time to span the time horizon of intere…
We present a new syntactical proof that first-order Peano Arithmetic with Skolem axioms is conservative over Peano Arithmetic alone for arithmetical formulas. This result - which shows that the Excluded Middle principle can be used to eliminate Skolem functions - has been previously proved by other techniques, among them the epsilon substitution method and forcing. In our proof, we employ Interactive Realizability, a computational semantics for Peano Arithmetic which extends Kreisel's modified realizability to the classical case.
We study the logic obtained by endowing the language of first-order arithmetic with second-order measure quantifiers. This new kind of quantification allows us to express that the argument formula is true in a certain portion of all possible interpretations of the quantified variable. We show that first-order arithmetic with measure quantifiers is capable of formalizing simple results from probability theory and, most importantly, of representing every recursive random function. Moreover, we introduce a realizability interpretation of this logic in which programs have access to an oracle from …
This paper explores the proof theory necessary for recommending an expressive but decidable first-order system, named MAV1, featuring a de Morgan dual pair of nominal quantifiers. These nominal quantifiers called `new' and `wen' are distinct from the self-dual Gabbay-Pitts and Miller-Tiu nominal quantifiers. The novelty of these nominal quantifiers is they are polarised in the sense that `new' distributes over positive operators while `wen' distributes over negative operators. This greater control of bookkeeping enables private names to be modelled in processes embedded as formulae in MAV1. Th…
Propositional canonical Gentzen-type systems, introduced in 2001 by Avron and Lev, are systems which in addition to the standard axioms and structural rules have only logical rules in which exactly one occurrence of a connective is introduced and no other connective is mentioned. A constructive coherence criterion for the non-triviality of such systems was defined and it was shown that a system of this kind admits cut-elimination iff it is coherent. The semantics of such systems is provided using two-valued non-deterministic matrices (2Nmatrices). In 2005 Zamansky and Avron extended these resu…
During the last decades, a lot of effort was put into identifying decidable fragments of first-order logic. Such efforts gave birth, among the others, to the two-variable fragment and the guarded fragment, depending on the type of restriction imposed on formulae from the language. Despite the success of the mentioned logics in areas like formal verification and knowledge representation, such first-order fragments are too weak to express even the simplest statistical constraints, required for modelling of influence networks or in statistical reasoning. In this work we investigate the extensions…
Craig interpolation has become a versatile algorithmic tool for improving software verification. Interpolants can, for instance, accelerate the convergence of fixpoint computations for infinite-state systems. They also help improve the refinement of iteratively computed lazy abstractions. Efficient interpolation procedures have been presented only for a few theories. In this paper, we introduce a complete interpolation method for the full range of quantifier-free Presburger arithmetic formulas. We propose a novel convex variable projection for integer inequalities and a technique to combine th…
We propose a realizability interpretation of a system for quantifier free arithmetic which is equivalent to the fragment of classical arithmetic without "nested" quantifiers, called here EM1-arithmetic. We interpret classical proofs as interactive learning strategies, namely as processes going through several stages of knowledge and learning by interacting with the "environment" and with each other. We give a categorical presentation of the interpretation through the construction of two suitable monads.
Advances in the field of Machine Learning and Deep Neural Networks (DNNs) has enabled rapid development of sophisticated and autonomous systems. However, the inherent complexity to rigorously assure the safe operation of such systems hinders their real-world adoption in safety-critical domains such as aerospace and medical devices. Hence, there is a surge in interest to explore the use of advanced mathematical techniques such as formal methods to address this challenge. In fact, the initial results of such efforts are promising. Along these lines, we propose the use of quantifier elimination (…
